Ask the Guys Dear Classified Guys, My husband has always been the type of guy who buys things that need repair just to save a few bucks. The first house he bought was nearly condemned before we spent three years rebuilding it into a spacious cape. While the end result is beautiful, it came at a cost. My husband's klutziness landed him a broken arm and multiple trips to the emergency room. He swore off remodeling after that, until we started looking for a new house. In our hunt for more space, we found two houses. One is almost new, in a decent neighborhood, at an okay price. The other is much larger, great yard, great price, but you guessed it, needs some TLC. My husband is thinking of doing it all over again. I don't know if I can watch him fall off the second story deck AGAIN! Do you think we're better off buying the fixer-upper or just spending a little more for a finished home?

PETS OF THE WEEK NADIA is a fiveyear-old Alaskan Husky. Nadia has a heartbreaking past. She came to the Shelter after police seized her from her owner, who had kept her on a chain with a collar that was so small it had grown right through her flesh! She survived the infection and found a new home with some heroes. Unfortunately, she hasn’t really recovered from her early abuse. Nadia is very nervous around children, strangers, and hyper dogs. She’s not a good candidate for a family or for the dog park--but with all that Husky energy, she needs a home that will keep her exercised and work on some socialization, but that will also provide her with a safe place to get her confused doggie brain back in order. With a very experienced dog owner and a lot of patience, she can still live a full, wonderful life! ROCKO is a oneyear-old domestic longhair who was taken into the Shelter on October 18, 2013.

ENERGY SAVING TIPS Save Energy Dollars Each Month and Make Your Home More Comfortable • Weatherization. Caulk and weather strip doors and windows, or install seasonal plastic window kits to seal out cold drafts. • Heating System. Set your thermostat to the lowest comfortable setting and leave it. For each degree over 70 degrees, your heating costs will increase three percent. Clean or replace filters once a month or as needed to help the system work more efficiently. • At Home. Dress in layers of warm clothing, including socks and shoes. • Cooking. Preheat oven only when the recipe calls for it. Avoid opening the oven door during baking; use oven timer and light. • Water Heating. Set the thermostat on your hot water heater to supply 120ºF water. Measure the water temperature at the hot water tap to assure it is 120ºF. Repair or replace leaky faucets. One drip per second results in the loss of 700 gallons of water per year, plus the energy for heating it. • Refrigerator. Vacuum condenser coils at least once a year. Make sure to unplug the refrigerator first.
