With high school graduation celebrations just around the corner, it’s vital that parents talk with their teens about the dangers of distracted or impaired driving, both as a driver and as a passenger. While the rate of teen driver-involved crashes has declined significantly over the last decade, teen drivers are still 1.6 times more like to be involved in a crash than adults. Understanding and eliminating known risk factors could prevent many of these tragedies and ensure teens make in home from graduation parties safely. Parents should discuss and regularly reinforce the following safety practices with their teens. •Buckle up every time; while seat belts do not prevent crashes, they reduce the risk of fatal injury to front seat car occupants by 45%; •Never drive after consuming any amount of drugs or alcohol or ride with a driver who has done so; almost 1 out of 5 of young drivers involved in fatal crashes had been drinking; •Fatal crashes are more likely to occur at night, but the risk is much higher for teens; •Stow all cell phones and electronic devices to limit driver distraction; •Get plenty of sleep and never take the wheel when tired or ride with a drowsy driver; the difference between weekday and weekend sleep schedules can result in a phenomenon know as “social jet lag,” the equivalent of flying from New York to Denver and back every weekend; •Observe the posted speed limit and obey the rules of the road; don’t give in to peer pressure to engage in risky behavior and speak up if a driver or passenger is doing something unsafe; reach an understanding with parents to provide a safe ride home with no questions asked.
