Open Letter to the Citizens and Friends of Bowling Green
DRA Corporate Office - 601 State Street The District (DRA - Downtown Redevelopment Authority) is happy to bring to Downtown Bowling Green, free of charge for the enjoyment of all our citizens and visitors, the 34th Annual BB&T title sponsored Concerts in the Parks series. We are both pleased and honored to have BB&T as our title sponsor for the 13th consecutive year. As I am in my second year as Executive Director of The District (DRA), I am happy to report that it has been a busy, interesting learning curve and a rewarding experience. Being a native of Bowling Green, it is very gratifying to be part of all that is happening in and around the downtown area and within our defined district.
Ron Murphy DRA Executive Director
The District (DRA) is a 501 C3 non-profit corporation established out of an original retail and business development association for Downtown Bowling Green that has been of service for a combined 30 plus years. The District (DRA) derived its purpose and identity from the commissioned District Revitalization Strategy of 2002 adopted by the City in cooperation with The District (DRA) as the plan and revitalization study that is still implemented today. The District (DRA) was heavily instrumental in the early stages of securing grants for the purchase of blighted property, allowing for all the new improvements implemented by the TIF District you see around us today. The District (DRA) is comprised of approximately 80 blocks in the downtown area commonly referred to as that area bounded from the river to the hill and from the railroad to the By-Pass. We, the District (DRA), are fortunate indeed to be located in the heart of Downtown at our corporate-owned facility at 601 State Street in the historic Galloway Building (originally Galloway Bro.’s Ford Motor Co.). What is even more exciting is that the recommitted renovation of our facility is within sight of completion. Additionally, as of the first of this year, we have completed the merger with the Fountain Square Business Owners Association in order to consolidate all efforts to better serve all business interests within the DRA district. There are many to thank for this progress that has been so long in becoming a reality. First and foremost is my Board of Directors. Certainly two notable retail facilities who believed in us last year and relocated their establishments here are Lynn O’Keefe, owner of Gallery 916 (art), and Roiann Ridley, owner of MacKenzie’s Floral. We are also proud to have an open membership roster allowing members from business, both large and small, and individuals interested in the work that we do. We are fully committed to the support and progress of both business and individual residents within The District. Watch us grow and expand! The renovation of our 9,000 sq. ft. warehouse space will bring exciting new business to Downtown and The District. Watch for other announcements to come very soon. Follow us on our website: http://downtownbg.org and like us on Facebook: Downtown_BG. Contact us for additional information at mainstreet@downtownbg.org. Thank you and enjoy the concert series this year. Sincerely, Ron Murphy, Executive Director 2

Salvage Town Back in 2004, mutual friends in Lexington, KY introduced lead vocalist Kyle Beard and lead guitarist Easton Bryant, both natives of south-central Kentucky. They played a makeshift gig in a friend’s basement for a back-to-school party on the night they met...and that was the start. They hit it off and started to believe someday there could be more than musty basements and underage college parties. The following year found Bryant Alabama-bound and Beard headed to Bowling Green, KY. Through the years to come, both promised they’d have a band if ever in the same town again and that’s exactly what happened when Bryant relocated to Bowling Green in late 2009. Beard had been prearranging the formation while playing acoustic gigs around town with drummer Martin Ballou and bassist Aaron Waters, two additional Bowling Green transplants from rural Kentucky. The foursome quickly meshed and the common love of foot-stompin’, soulful music with attitude landed them immediate popularity in the area. Salvage Town, who take their name from the lyrics of fellow Kentuckian Chris Knight, have repossessed various aspects of American roots music and pieced them together to form a sound that’s gritty, unique, bold and more than a bit dangerous. Knight, along with others such as The Band and Creedence Clearwater Revival, are instrumental influences of the group’s emerging style. Currently the band is playing shows all around the region and promoting their debut album, “So Glad You Came” (released May 2011), produced, mixed and mastered by Darren Doyle at Studio DD in Smiths Grove, KY. Salvage Town performs Friday, July 5 at 5:30PM at Fountain Square Park. The Guide To Concerts In The Parks 2013

Joey Hayes and the Stepbrothers Band Joey Hayes is a Bowling Green native and has many musical interests. He is a singer/songwriter with his main musical instrument being the guitar. Joey has worked at the craft of songwriting for over 30 years and has had many songs published and a few recorded by other artists. He continues to work at the craft and enjoys the creative process in creating original music. Joey has also been a member of a four-piece Celtic music worship consort by the name of Ceol na Tiarna. Along with the founding member, Skip Cleavinger, and members Frances Cunningham and Bill Verdier, they have traveled from Canada to Florida playing their special type of worship music. In recent years, Joey has taken up the craft of guitar building. With his friend and mentor, Keith Hughes, Joey has built two guitars and has a third in the planning stages. Taking raw wood and shaping it into a beautiful instrument is a very satisfying endeavor. Joey looks forward to increasing his skills as a luthier in the coming years. The Stepbrothers Band consists of Joey on acoustic guitar along with Bowling Green residents John McCracken on acoustic and electric guitars and Alan Simpson on drums. All three share in the vocal offerings. They play an enjoyable eclectic range of cover material from Eric Clapton, Dan Fogelberg and James Taylor to Don Williams, John Mayer, and Keb Mo. Their music and style is energetic, yet laid back and very entertaining. Enjoy the music of Joey Hayes and the Stepbrothers Band Wednesday, June 12 at 11:30 at Fountain Square Park.

Mt Victor Revue The Mt. Victor Revue has been together as a band for about two years. The group consists of Ernie Small on mandolin and vocals, Chris Durbin on banjo and vocals, Eddie Mills on electric and upright-acoustic bass, Bob Bridges on fiddle and vocals, and Bruce Kessler on guitar and vocals, with honorary member Jane Pearl joining them on ukulele, banjo-lele, and vocals when she is in town. While their instruments are typical of bluegrass bands, the Revue has a sound that can not accurately be described as bluegrass. Their repertoire includes personalized versions of songs from Bob Dylan, The Byrds, and Buffalo Springfield, to Billy Joel and Sister Hazel, to Alice in Chains and The Black Keys, along with a number of original songs written by members of the band. Whatever it is called – popgrass? – the common theme is fun, fueled by the diversity and camaraderie of the band members and their love of performing. Until their wives convince them to get GPS chips installed behind their ears, you can track the location of the Mt. Victor Revue by following them on Facebook, at http:// www.facebook.com/MtVictorRevue. Mt Victor Revue performs Wednesday, June 5 at 11:30 at Fountain Square Park.

Mudd River Union Acoustic “Mudd River Union Acoustic” is considered the first heartbeat of MRU. These five friends began singing and playing together around a kerosene heater in 2007 and realized immediately they had something very special. Since that day they have done their best to share this gift with as many music lovers as possible. Their vocalists’ four-part harmonies blend effortlessly together and have become the foundation of their signature sound. The chemistry they have together can be seen and heard — a rare quality only found in the most close-knit musicians. Three talented lead singers are capable of singing a broad spectrum of styles. From blues to rock to new and old country alike, each member brings to the table their spin on favorites from all decades. But don’t let the acoustic setting fool you. Their energy and vocals will still captivate; with just four voices and two guitars and an array of percussion instruments, they have grabbed the attention of audiences numbering in the thousands. As acoustic artists, they have opened for many radio artists in concerts and festivals in the tri-state, and have sung their stirring arrangement of the National Anthem at numerous sporting and concert events. Sing along to your favorite songs with an “MRU reinvented” unplugged style. Bring your friends, bring your dancing shoes. This is no coffee shop gig! Can’t wait to see you at the show!
Enjoy Mudd River Union Acoustic Friday, August 16 at 5:30 at Fountain Square Park.

Bueler’s Day Off “Let’s go have fun” is the mantra of these guys. Comprised of some of the best musicians Bowling Green has to offer, Bueler’s Day Off became a reality for the band’s namesake “B.” Alan Simpson a few years ago. Everyone in the band has played for many years in any number of bands. Craig Mc Allister and Alan front the band, taking turns at the drums and singing. Their set lists include Country, Jazz, Classic Rock and Funk. This wouldn’t be possible without great musicians. On guitar, John Mc Cracken and Todd Coop show the finesse of studio musicians. The bands best kept secret may be Josh Sturdivant. His soaring vocals and mastery of the keyboard is captivating. Bueler’s bass guitarist, Randy Thomas, a true professional, holds it all together with style and precision. Clay Terry, Ryan Stiles bring the horn section to life on the saxophone, aided by the Master Blaster Kevin Goodnight on trumpet. If you like music and like to have fun, you’ll love Bueler’s Day Off.
Have fun with Bueler’s Day Off Friday, August 16 at 8PM in Circus Square Park!

Matchdaddy Matchdaddy is a group of four guys who were tired of life on the run and the “Fugitive” lifestyle. The term Matchdaddy is derived from the nickname of lead singer Steve Wilson in high school. At the time, he was thin and had a mop of red hair that resembled a match on fire. Thus the nickname of “match” that morphed over the years to “Matchdaddy”. Nowadays he no longer resembles a match; the hair is gone and what was a stick looks more like a stump, but the fire to play music still remains. So, why the name Matchdaddy? The answer is why not, plus the name ZZ Top was already taken! Matchdaddy is Steve Wilson (lead vocals/rhythm guitar), Tim “Doc” Hulsey (lead guitar), Mike Hildreth (bass guitar) and Jim DeCesare (drums), good friends who’ve been playing music together for over 10 years with a popular large band. They decided they wanted to do something smaller with different types of music everyone knows and loves. Their goal is to entertain you and have a large time whenever they perform. Matchdaddy performs Friday, July 12 at 5:30PM at Fountain Square Park.

Brandon Ray Texas-native, Brandon Ray, started playing guitar at age 13. He fronted his own pop/rock/alternative band ‘Crimson Soul’. Ray decided to leave the rock group in 2008 and make a move that had always been a dream. His love for songwriting led him to Nashville, TN. After arriving in Nashville, he worked endlessly, co-writing, playing writer’s nights, networking, singing demos, whatever it took to be heard. It worked! Brandon signed his first publishing deal in November of 2009. Shortly after, he was hired on to play lead guitar for recording country artist “Trailer Choir”. He spent 2010 touring the country and playing alongside acts like Toby Keith, Tim McGraw, Sugarland, ZZ Top, George Strait, Lady Antebellum, Miranda Lambert, and the list goes on. That same year, Ray scored a Billboard top 30 radio rock hit, ‘Gettin Even’ by ‘Seasons After’, which he wrote with Cody Hanson from ‘Hinder’. All of this at the age of 22. Enjoy Brandon in concert July 26 at 8pm at Circus Square Park.

Skip Bond and the Fugitives Skip Bond and the Fugitives continue to play the R&B/Motown/Classic Rock songs that have made them a big regional favorite band since their genesis at a BG Rotary Club party back in 2001. SB&F have also added new current songs and updated their songlist. SB&F is still led by manager and original keyboardist Tommy Holderfield. Musical director Bobby Baldwin, on lead guitar and vocals, brings his years of experience to the band. He has played in the past with the likes of Carlos Santana, Eric Clapton and Delaney & Bonnie, just to name a few. Front man and lead vocalist Jon Crosby brings great vocal stylings to his songs. Jon has performed the last few years with Orchestra KY’s Rewinders in their Beatles, Motown and disco shows. Along with Jon, SB&F has added a new female vocalist, Dorthea Brumsie. She is fairly new on the BG music scene. She is highlighted on their new songs by Aretha Franklin, Adele and Tina Turner. The horn section is headed by the other original SB&F member Dave Gottfried on trombone, Randy Certain on trumpet, flugel horn and piccolo trumpet and Clay Terry on saxophone. The newest members to SB&F are John Givens on drums and vocals and Russ Allen on bass guitar. Both have played with numerous bands in the area for the last few years. SB&F will continue to offer their usual high energy, party band shows that they have been known by since their start in 2001. Enjoy the sounds of SB&F Friday, August 30 at 8PM at Circus Square Park.
