Country Peddler Publisher BG OnStage will begin its production of “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast” this week, so if you have kids (or are still a kid at heart) “be their guest” at one of the six upcoming performances. The play will open on July 28 with a perfomance at 6:30pm and continue on July 29 at 6:30pm and July 30 at 3:00pm. Three other performances follow on August 4 & 5 at 6:30pm and August 6 at 3:00pm. The play will be presented at WKU’s Van Meter Theatre. Tickets are $15/ages 14 & up; $10 ages 7-13; and $6 ages 6 & under. Tickets may be purchased at bgonstage.eventbrite.com. This community summer production features talented local actors (teens, WKU students, and adults) gracing the stage at beautiful, recently-renovated Van Meter Theatre. The production is directed by Elise Charney, with musical direction by Trish Beresford and Molly Nance. Chelsea Payne, an actress from Owensboro who is attending Kentucky Wesleyan College, stars as Belle; Derek Duvall as Maurice; Sam Tuggle as The Beast; Caitlin Belcher as Mrs. Potts; Matt Propst as Lefou; and Steven Charny at Gaston. Starting the new school year can be a time of great excitement… and anxiety. Help calm your child’s fears (and your own) with these teacher-approved tips. MEET THE NEW TEACHER For kids, one of the biggest back-to-school fears is “Will I like my new teacher?” Breaking the ice early on is one of the best ways to calm everyone’s fears. Take advantage of your school’s open house or back-to-school night. Some teachers welcome phone calls or e-mails. TOUR THE SCHOOL If your school hosts an open house, be sure to go. Familiarizing your child with her environment will help her avoid a nervous stomach on the first day. Together you can meet her teacher, find her desk, or explore the playground. CONNECT WITH FRIENDS A familiar friend can make all the difference when heading back to school. You might try calling parents from last year’s class and finding out which children are in your child’s class this year. Refresh these relationships before school starts by scheduling a play date or a school carpool. TOOL UP Obtain the class supply list and take a special shopping trip with your child. Having the right tools will help him feel prepared. School supply lists also provide great insight into the schoolwork ahead. Let him practice using supplies that he’s not used before — such as colored pencils or a protractor. EASE INTO THE ROUTINE Switching from a summer to a school schedule can be stressful to everyone in the household. Avoid first-day-of-school mayhem by practicing your routine a few days in advance. Routines help children feel comfortable, and establishing a solid school routine will make the first day of school go much smoother.

Study Tips for Your Student
TIP #1: Develop organizational systems that will work for YOU. Not all organizational systems will work for all students. You should choose the ones that will work best with your schedule and needs. TIP #2: Avoid distractions in your study space. If your study space includes a TV and radio, it’s probably not the best place for you to study. Your study space should be used for studying and working only. TIP #3: Reward yourself! Positive reinforcement is an amazing thing. When you have completed tasks, reward yourself in small ways. This can be anything from allowing yourself to take a 10 minute break to treating yourself to a movie. TIP #4: Schedule time to complete your assignments based on anticipated time on task and urgency. Once you know all the assignments that you need to complete, determine their deadlines and estimate how long it will take to finish each one. You can then prioritize your tasks and set a clear schedule for completing them! TIP #5: Use an academic planner to keep track of your assignments, deadlines, and appointments. By having all this information in one place, you’ll know exactly where to look to find out what you need to do. TIP #6: Use shorter, less grammatically correct sentences. Since you are the only one who will be reviewing your notes, you need not write grammatically correct sentences. You should do your best to shorten your sentences as much as possible. This will enable you to take notes at a faster speed. TIP #7: Divide your study time into blocks separated by quick breaks. It is most effective to study in 30-45 minute blocks of time, allowing yourself quick 3-5 minute breaks in between study blocks. TIP #8: Learn how to effectively communicate with your teachers. Your teachers are there to provide guidance and support. You’ll find that most of your teachers are more than happy to provide additional instruction and extra help.
