LOCAL COUNTRY SINGER RYE DAVIS IN CONCERT Local singer/songwriter and ABC Rising Star contestant Rye Davis will perform a live concert on Saturday, November 1, at 7pm at the ECHS Auditorium, featuring the 4 Alarm Band. The concert is sponsored by the Edmonson County Lions Club, The Edmonson Voice.com, Howdy 103.7FM, and Sam 100.7FM. Proceeds will benefit the Edmonson County chapter of Feeding America Backpack Program. The program sends backpacks of non-perishable food items home with our local students who are in need. Rye Davis, a former ECHS, WKU, and pro baseball standout, is now making his mark in the Nashville music scene with his performing and songwriting abilities. Performing with Davis is another popular local act, Brian Alexander and the 4 Alarm Band. The southern rock and country group performs original and cover tunes. Hometown Heroes

Thanks to the students’ desire to give to those less fortunate, a 4th grade class at Plano Elementary School is receiving WBKO TV’s Hometown Hero Award. Tara Tinsley’s class at Plano was selected for the award after the students elected to forego their own reward to help children at the Family Enrichment Center in Bowling Green. The students won the schoolwide “Buckets of Hope” campaign, collecting the most cleaning supplies, diapers and other items to be donated to the Wee Care nursery at the Family Enrichment Center. Their reward was coupons for free meals at Wendy’s, but the students decided on their own to donate those coupons back to the children at Wee Care. They visited Wee Care delivering the coupons in person. For their act of philanthropy, the students were selected for the Hometown Hero Award and were featured on WBKO.

The 3rd grade classes have been incorporating the 7 Habits in their classrooms. They focused on Synergizingtogether is better. They learned about famous artists and composers. They completed flipbooks, writing pieces and art projects to show what they had learned.

Briarwood ESL Family Night There are more than 55 languages spoken in Warren County Public Schools, and many are represented at Briarwood Elementary. In an effort to continue education beyond the classroom, staff members at the school hosted ESL Family Night for English Language Learners. The event gave attendees a sneak peak into an average school day as parents experienced first hand what and how students are learning. Outside agencies educated families about additional community resources, while interpreters assisted with communication. Additionally, the students’ families were served pizza and had the chance to visit classrooms.

Nearly an entire city block was shut down as hundreds of students, families, and community members attended the Annual Fall Festival held on the front lawn of North Warren Elementary. The event is the school’s largest fundraiser of the year and always sure to attract a large crowd with favorites like the Cake Walk, Toilet Paper Toss, Bake Sale, and Dinosaur to name only a few. A food trailer was also on site to help feed families and raise even more money for the school as dozens of students flocked to bouncy houses and the ever-popular face-painting booth. Inside, a King and Queen were named for each classroom as friends and families voted for their favorite contestants.

Moss Seventh Grader Wins Technology Award

Seventh grader Ngoc Nguyen has been awarded the Student Technology Award from the Kentucky Association of School Librarians. She was nominated for the award by Moss librarian Renee Hale and earned the award for her activities during the 2013-14 school year while a student at Warren Elementary. Ngoc was the creative lead for Warren Elementary’s 6th grade showcase project called “Express Yourself with Technology”. She was also a Student Technology Leadership Program mentor who helped Warren Elementary 5th graders design a website about mobile applications. Ngoc has written three technical writing pieces. One of them, “How to Use Twitter”, won 1st place in the April 2014 STLP state competition.

Lighthouse Academy Student Gives Back

Haylie Wells hasn’t yet graduated from high school, but she is already showing a maturity and a giving spirit that would be the envy of any adult. Wells, a student at the Lighthouse Academy alternative high school, has volunteered to donate bone marrow during the Warren County Public Schools fall break. She has undergone the tests needed to see if she is eligible to donate, and she will undergo the surgical procedure at Nashville’s Skyline Medical Center. Her bone marrow will be used to help an ailing infant. “I want to bring change to the world,” says Wells, who turned 18 in August. “I’m trying to be that change. I figure this is a good way to kick off my adulthood while also helping someone who needs my help.” “For a high school student to make such a sacrifice is impressive,” says Lighthouse Principal Eric Wilson who is pictured with Haylie.
