Jody Richards Elementary School 6th graders Tyler Earnhart and Parker Stobaugh were selected to make a presentation at the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) National Conference in Atlanta. Their presentation, Kid-Tested Technologies from 2 Kid Techies, was included in the regional TeachMeet Conference. The pair also made the presentation at the regional Student Technology Leadership Program Showcase held at Western Kentucky University.

New School Opens Bowling Green City Schools opened a new Dishman McGinnis Elementary on August 6. Located at 375 Glen Lily Road, the school is on the former LC Curry Elementary site and replaced the former Dishman McGinnis on Old Morgantown Road. The 62,000 sq. ft. 2-story school is built to accommodate as many as 500 students (preschool-5th grade). The building features solargenerated hot water and electricity.

Scholarships Awarded to Deserving Students Twelve Cumberland Trace 5th and 6th grade students earned $1,000 college scholarships last December when the annual Matt Rzepka Scholarships were awarded. The scholarships are named in honor of a former Cumberland Trace student and Greenwood High graduate who was killed in an accident in 2002. Helped by funding from a benefit golf tournament each summer, the Rzepkas have now awarded $64,000 in scholarships to CTES students. Students applying for scholarships are judged on essays. The twelve winners are Jocelyn Santamaria, Evan Hardin, Maggie Goodnight, Noah Jacobs, Kamrin Green, Elizabeth Belcher, William Sanders, Aubin Jefferson, Connor Nichols, Evan Brittenham, Andrew McCubbins, and Anne Logan Perkins.

Amanda Jones, Bristow School cafeteria manager, has started a Cooking Club for students in grades 1-3, and it is growing in popularity. Weekly meetings have grown, and now approximately a dozen students have signed up to learn how to make tasty treats in the school’s kitchen. Students have made pizza, fruit kabobs, and other healthy snacks.

Janessa Unseld, a 5th grader at Natcher, is one of 6 students to win $1,500 college savings accounts through the KY Education Savings Plan Trust (KESPT) Dream Out Loud Challenge. The Challenge invited students, grades K-6, to submit an original poem, drawing, video or essay answering the question How will I change the world after college? Each winner’s school receives $500 as well. Janessa won in the video category.
Rockfield kindergarten student Gabe Reynolds and his mother, Ashley Reynolds, received a better-than-expected surprise on Gabe’s 6th birthday last November. Kindergarten teacher Rebecca Johnson started a campaign to raise funds to help Gabe, who faced two brain surgeries in January, and his family with expenses. The result was better than Johnson could have imagined. “We were hoping to raise 500 dollars,” she says. “With help from the entire Rockfield community, we raised more than $2,500. It has been a blessing to watch the kids give and care so much for our friend.” The service project conducted by Johnson’s class was called Buckets of Love for Gabe. Ashley Reynolds explains that Gabe is battling a form of epilepsy and requires two different surgeries. She says the fundraiser is a blessing to her family.

Art Awards
South Warren MS Volleyball Teams (7th and 8th grade) both won Southern Kentucky Middle School Athletic Conference Tournament Championships last October and the 8th grade team finished an undefeated season. In the 8th grade tournament, SWMS defeated Bowling Green 25-16, 25-15 in the championship match. The victory was the 22nd this season for the Spartans against no losses. In the 7th grade tournament, SWMS defeated Drakes Creek Middle School 25-23, 25-16 in the championship match. South Warren finished the season with a record of 20-2.
South Warren FFA Wins Trap Shoot South Warren High School FFA Trap Shooting Team won the Barren River Region Trap Shoot held in Cave City recently. SWHS competed against 11 other teams. Team members are Austin Day, Clay Scudder, Josh Alexander, Christian Chandler and Seth Hoffman. Alexander also won the high individual score in the region by shooting a perfect 100/100 and winning by one clay pigeon.

WCHS Students Take Horsemanship Awards WCHS’s FFA Horsemanship Team finished in a 4th place tie at the State Competition held last November in Murray. Team members Morgan Askins and Charity Payne placed 1st in their classes; and Bailey Rigdon placed 3rd in her class.

The Kids On The Block
The 2nd Annual Scotty’s Pound the Pavement benefiting Kids on the Block was a huge success. The free kids run held on August 23 had over 300 participants ranging in ages 214. Three distances were offered for the children: a 1/2K, a 2K, and a 3K. The fundraiser raised $40,000, allowing the puppet troupe to continue presenting unlimited free educational programs in all schools and daycares within Warren County. KOB promotes healthy habits throughout the year with a Combating Childhood Obesity program, presented to grades K-6th. In 2014 Hot Yoga Bowling Green began doing exercises with the children following the puppet program.

The NAS program was initiated in 1964 to recognize academically promising black students throughout the nation and to provide scholarships to the most outstanding program participants. Hayes is the 4th BGHS student to be recognized recently by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
