Ask the Guys Dear Classified Guys, I consider myself to be fairly intelligent. I read the newspaper and the classifieds every day. As the colder months are approaching, I've started to notice more advertising for furnaces and fireplaces in the newspaper. The one ad I saw last week was kind of confusing. I've heard of heating your home with fuel oil, natural gas, wood stoves or even pellet stoves, but one contractor was offering to install a corn furnace. I've never heard of such a thing. At first I thought it was a misprint. I mean, I eat popcorn, canned corn, even corn on the cob, but never thought of using it to heat my home. Is this ad a hoax or are there really corn furnaces?

Cash: The ad is no hoax. In fact,

it's quite a-maiz-ing! There really are furnaces to heat your home that use corn as a fuel source. Carry: Corn stoves or furnaces have been used in certain parts of the country for years, especially where corn is prevelent. In recent years as other fuel prices have dramatically risen, corn stoves have gained in popularity. Cash: Using corn as fuel makes

sense. You may have heard news reports about using ethanol fuel to run in your car. Well, ethanol is a form of alcohol that is derived from corn. This same energy source that could power your car is also what makes corn a good alternative for heating your home. It generally burns clean and is readily available. Carry: A corn furnace operates similarly to any other furnace, except for the fuel. It doesn't burn the stalks, left over cobs or popcorn. Instead, it burns dried kernels of shelled corn, the same yellow kind cows eat. Cash: Some of the furnaces are designed to burn all sorts of alternative fuels, including wood chips, sawdust, walnut shells or even cherry pits.

Carry: Although, I wonder how you get enough cherry pits to heat a home. Cash: While these types of heating systems are a great alternative, they do require a little more work. The hopper of a corn furnace needs to be reloaded with corn, usually about once a day. Also, you'll need a clean dry place to store the 50pound bags of corn. Carry: Unlike popcorn, the corn furnace won't make your house smell like a night at the movies and the kernels don't snap, crackle or pop as they burn. The process is silent. Cash: Although, it would be handy if future models came equipped with an option to make movie popcorn as well.

Students recognized for donating more than 10 hours to service projects: Alyssa Fleschner, Anna Suggs, Brooklyn Goodrich, Caden Trevor, Caleb Bruce, Chase Bailey, Dalton Waggoner, Ella Crowe, Emma Grace Young, Griffin Kupchella, John David Hunt, Lauren Garner, Lukas Cisco, Maiah Cisco, Olivia Moore, Paige Hines, and Paul Smith. Dragon Battalion Earns Honors Eleven members of the Warren Central High Junior ROTC Dragon Battalion, led by instructors Keith Murphy and John Hurley, competed in the Junior Cadet Leadership Challenge (JCLC) held May 31-June 4 in Greenville, and Warren Central’s Kevin Sims came away with the top Leadership Award from among 120 cadets at the event. While at JCLC, the Dragon Battalion members completed training in Cadet Challenge Physical Fitness, Water Survival, Field Leadership Reaction Course, Rafting, Confidence Course, Rappelling, and One-Rope Bridge. The cadets are evaluated on leadership while holding positions such as squad leader, platoon sergeant, platoon leader, company 1SG, and company commander.

Champions Cap Perfect Season Greenwood’s Fast-Pitch Softball Team defeated Owensboro Catholic 8-0 June 8 to win the State Tournament and cap a perfect season. The Lady Gators finished the season with a record of 44-0, becoming the first softball team in state history to go undefeated. Greenwood advanced to the championship game of the State Tournament by beating Louisville Mercy 5-3 Saturday morning in the final winners’ bracket game. Greenwood defeated South Laurel 7-1 Thursday evening, with Elizabeth Moss striking out 15. The Lady Gators then improved their record to 41-0, tying the state record for victories, by beating Notre Dame 13-0 in the 2nd round Friday morning. Greenwood, which won its 3rd State Championship and its 1st since 2008, then defeated Lone Oak 9-0 Friday night. Saturday’s victory over Mercy gave the Lady Gators a 43-0 record. They are ranked among the top teams in the nation.

South Kentucky Performing Arts Center (SKyPAC)... The Southern Kentucky Performing Arts Center (SKyPAC) is committed to building a successful Youth Theater Program. SKyPAC produces a variety of performances, showcased at the Capitol Arts Center and in SKyPAC’s facilities, to entertain and educate the area’s talented young actors, dancers, musicians, and technicians. Programs will be designed for children from 6 years old through college students, whether they are experienced or joining a theater program for the 1st time. Performances will be led by talented guest directors, area theater professionals and SKyPAC staff.

STEP Scholoarship Tianna Poole, a senior at Warren Central, was awarded a $500 scholarship to Western Kentucky University during the STEP (Students Turning Education into Potential) program graduation held April 15 at the National Corvette Museum. Poole was one of 31 graduates from the program for highachieving high school juniors and seniors in Bowling Green and Warren County. She was selected as the scholarship winner based on her essay explaining why the program was beneficial to her. The STEP program is administered by the Leadership Bowling Green Alumni Association and gives these students an opportunity to learn leadership skills while learning about the Bowling Green community.

South Warren... Middle School students Brandon Wilson and Nick Ownbey were recognized at the March Warren Co. Board of Education’s meeting for winning honors in the recent MathCounts Competition. Wilson took 1st place in the Individual Competition, winning a 4-year tuition scholarship to WKU. Ownbey finished 3rd in the Individual Competition, and won a 4-year $500 WKU scholarship. They are pictured with Connie Choate, who coached the Math-Counts team, and SWMS Principal Eddy Bushelman.

Student Artwork Displayed Twenty-eight students from seven different schools in the Warren County Public Schools had their artwork displayed at the Southern Kentucky Performing Arts Center (SKyPAC) in February, and 6 of those earned the prestigious Gold Award. The Gold Award winners: Skye Hood - Warren Central High School; Jessica Agro and Nathan Powers - Greenwood High School; Jordan Galloway, Serina Roberts, and Brianna Stoots - Henry F. Moss Middle School. SKyPAC was the host this year for the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, and the winning artists were featured in an exhibit in the Children’s Gallery of the Renshaw Education Center at SKyPAC.
