This will be the last News Around Town that I will write. After 42 years of peddlin’ advertising, I am retiring at the end of this month. It has been quite a journey. I began working at Country Peddler in October, 1974. I was the only sales rep; our office was an enclosed breezeway in one of the owner’s homes, and there were no contract customers. We began every week with a blank slate. I LOVED my job! I loved meeting with the customers, getting to know them and their business, creating ads for them, and then putting it all together to take to the printer. The Country Peddler publication, office, and staff have had many changes and growth through my 42 years. I continued to love my job, the people I worked with, and all the details involved in publishing a weekly shopper and its offspring magazines, such as Flair, Focus 50, Summer Guide, 10K Souvenir program, and Health & Physical Activity Guide. Lana Hendricks will assume my position as Publisher. Lana has been with Country Peddler for 24 years. She started part-time in the Classified Department and has literally worked in every department. She has been Sales Manager since 2006. I leave Country Peddler knowing that it is in very good hands with Lana and the very capable staff. I look forward to the next chapter in my life, and with a heart and head full of memories, I say goodbye.

On Sunday, April 24, at 2pm, Meredith Thessen and Amy Disparte will be presenting “Aside to Astride: The Victorian Equestrienne” at Riverview. The slide presentation and lecture will discuss that legacy and review the history of the equestrienne. It will detail the female rider from Victorian times until the 1950’s--what they wore, the fact that they always rode side saddle, and then they rode astride after the turn of the century. A close look at the 19th century woman will reveal the challenges she faced riding sidesaddle in heavy layered clothing and conclude with the first generation of women to ride astride: the suffragettes. Along the way, they will discuss several Victorian women who rode against these odds and achieved excellence. Meredith Thessen is the Director of Marketing at Riverview, and Amy Disparte is a Docent.
