Floyd Collins Week July 17-23 Cave City, Kentucky Mammoth Cave is the longest known cave in the world, and it also has the distinction of being the oldest tour cave. Formal guided tours began in 1816, and early celebrity guests included historic personages like Jenny Lind, Edwin Booth, Charles Dickens, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and many more. Mammoth Cave was not the only commercialized cave, but it was by far the best known. Caver Floyd Collins believed the area’s many caves were connected to Mammoth Cave, and he lost his life in 1925 while exploring Sand Cave searching for a cave entrance. The 17-day effort to resuce him became an international media cirucs as a result of new technology--the radio.
