Publisher’s Prattle No matter how much we love the internet, websites, and blogs for women, there is still nothing that can compare to a “good ole” magazine. magazine is the perfect magazine… no photoshopping... no ridiculous sex tips… just good local interests.
This spring issue of was already going to be amazing, but there is something very Lana Hendricks, Publisher compelling about seeing how different someone can look. Once again, the TANGLEZ HAIR STUDIO team joined forces to create their annual makeover. I’m a huge fan of before and after pics, whether it’s in decorating or in fashion and beauty.

Cover Design by Joyce Lawhorn Joyce Lawhorn is a writer and artist, originally from Monroe County, KY, who now lives in Bowling Green. She accepts commission art assignments full time now, creating many portraits of people, animals, and scenery. Since she was a girl at Tompkinsville High School, her first love was art and writing poetry and short stories. This passion had to be put on the back burner when her children came along; then when they all left home, she picked up where she left off and hasn’t stopped. She posts her art online at “fineartamerica” and has several pieces hanging in homes across the U.S. and Europe.
Dear Gabby, The Kentucky Derby is just around the corner. I have a new hat but my husband says it looks stupid and cheap. I really want to look good. Should I take it back? — Signed, Mad Hatter Dear Mad Hatter, Well, you could try, but I don’t think the Goodwill accepts returns . — Gabby Dear Gabby, Last year for Father’s Day, I served my husband breakfast in bed. Don’t you think it would be nice if he remembered that and did something nice for me on Mother’s Day? — Signed, Mommy Dearest Dear Mommy Dearest, Oh, yes. I’m sure he won’t soon forget that Pop Tart you served him in bed. Maybe he’ll do the same for you. Maybe he will even make it a frosted one. — Gabby Dear Gabby, Mother’s Day is coming up and I need to get my mom something really special. Do you have any ideas? —Signed, Dutiful Daughter Dear DD, Why don’t you get her a picture of her favorite child? You know - a big portrait of your sister. She will love it. — Gabby Dear Gabby, I am planning my wedding and I think it would be fun to get married on a holiday and have a themed wedding. Do you have any suggestions? —Signed, Bridezilla Dear Bridezilla, I think April Fool’s Day is the most appropriate choice for getting married. — Gabby 4 • Flair • 2017 • April/May/June
Essence of... Kristin Harper MY BEST CHILDHOOD MEMORY IS...
Going to the happiest place on the planet, Disney, with my parents when I was 6. Still to this day I’m obsessed with the thought of Disney - I get tears!
COMPLETE THIS SENTENCE... Keep calm and let’s go have a drink!
THE MOST RANDOM THING IN MY PURSE RIGHT NOW IS... The note pad that I keep my “handwritten” never ending todo list written on.
WHEN YOU SAY, “HONEY, THEY’RE PLAYING OUR SONG” - WHAT’S PLAYING? Wow! I don’t know about “our song”, but I can pretty much belt out to any song ranging from Johnny Cash to NWA.
MY MOTHER ALWAYS SAID...
“Work hard. Never have to count on anyone else for anything.”
WHAT GIVES YOU THE MOST JOY?
Taking adventures! I love seeing new places and experiencing new things around the people I love.
Michelle Harper MY BEST CHILDHOOD MEMORY IS...
Spending my spring and summer break at my grandparents’ house in the country. No air conditioning windows open, the smell of fresh tilled dirt in the tobacco patch, and the smell of Grannie’s cooking wafting into the yard.
COMPLETE THIS SENTENCE...
Keep calm and get a massage!
THE MOST RANDOM THING IN MY PURSE RIGHT NOW IS...
Real Indian trade beads and an arrowhead to make a customer a custom necklace (I make jewelry for a hobby).
WHEN YOU SAY, “HONEY, THEY’RE PLAYING OUR SONG” WHAT’S PLAYING?
I’m a old-school rock’n roll fan. My favorite would be “Shook Me All Night Long” by AC/DC, but I’m all over the place with music.
MY MOTHER ALWAYS SAID... “Wear a clean pair of panties, you never know what might happen.”
WHAT GIVES YOU THE MOST JOY? Making people feel better!

Mother’s Day is one of the most popular holidays celebrated. Everyone runs around to pick up flowers or cards or prepares to take mom to dinner. On Father’s Day, the scurrying of people in stores and restaurants is not the same. Why is this? Fathers should be celebrated, too! If you are out of ideas (or low on money), there are several ways that will not cost you a dime that will make your dad feel good. If you don’t do anything else for your dad on Father’s Day, cut him some slack with the remote. Dads will love you for not complaining about the station or the remote; however, if your father wouldn’t necessarily appreciate a few hours in control of the TV viewing, think about catering to him instead.
Most any father will likely enjoy being served breakfast in bed, so fix his favorite breakfast and carry it to him on a tray. A copy of his favorite magazine or newspaper would add a nice touch, or a handwritten note saying “I Appreciate You” will surely bring a smile to his face. Fix dad dinner on his special day. The time spent preparing the meal can be perfect to enjoy family time. Once the dinner is prepared, fix his plate for him. After he has cleaned his
plate, clear the table and allow him to relax; however, if you can’t cook, try this next idea instead. Give your dad the gift of your time by clearing your schedule. If your father is a man who enjoys do-it-yourself projects, let him know that you will be available to help. For that father who doesn’t want to move a bone, perhaps watching a classic movie would be just the right thing to do. If the thought of watching movies bores you, put your most heartfelt feeling on paper.
Take a few minutes to think about what your father means to you and write him a letter. He can keep the letter forever, particularly if he is the heartfelt, sentimental type. It is sure to be something he will treasure. If writing a letter seems to be a difficult task, put together a short poem or card to express your personal feelings. No matter if you serve dad breakfast in bed or dinner hot off the grill, pick something to do that will make him feel special. If cooking isn’t your forte, make him the king of the remote for a day or help your father with a do-it-yourself project. If relaxing is the better way to spend the day, watch a great movie or present dad with a thoughtful letter to express your feelings.
COMING SOON....
Every piece is important.®

Lilah Howell is your average eight-year-old: she loves playing outside, riding horses, and spending time with her brothers and sisters. However, there’s one thing that separates Lilah from other second graders: she runs her own business, Lilah’s Lunch Boxes. Lilah’s Lunch Boxes consists of Lilah (with the help of her siblings) creating ready-made healthy lunches and selling them at the Bowling Green Farmers’ Market. Lilah got the idea by wanting to make lunches for the people who help on her parents’ farm and who work in the kitchen. “Lilah has always been interested in helping people and growing food,” says Lilah’s mom, Michelle, with pride. It’s clear that Lilah has a rock solid support system through her parents and her siblings, although the “My favorite part is adults have little to do with the business. making them,” says “They do it all, really,” says Michelle with a smile. “They harvest the Lilah. The boxes are vegetables, set up the boxes, keep track of the money, and even set made up of healthy, up and clean up their booths on homegrown foods, their own.” The pride that Lilah has in herself is which is something clear, and she obviously enjoys the work that was extremely involved in the business. “My favorite part is making them,” important to Lilah. says Lilah. The boxes are made up of healthy, homegrown foods, which is something that was extremely important to Lilah. “Lilah has a lot of dietary restrictions, so the boxes also include the type of food that she’s always been able to eat,” says Michelle. While Lilah has a successful business in the local scene, she’s not sure if she wants to expand past Bowling Green and Scottsville. “Some days I just want to play and not work,” says Lilah when asked about growing her business. “I don’t want to not have time to have fun.” Having fun is importatnt to not only Lilah but her parents, also. “We want her to be eight, and she’s really good about knowing her boundaries,” says Michelle. Despite the level of maturity shown by Lilah in our interview (complete with a handshake from both her and her older sister Elizabeth) the childlike excitement was clear in her eyes. Even when asked about her future plans, Lilah wanted to stay away from seriousness. “I want to be a horse farmer when I’m older,” says Lilah smiling. “But not showing (horses). I don’t want it to be serious.” Although she stays away from the serious, Lilah is the happy owner of a growing business of which she and her family are very proud.

5 Affordable Ways to Celebrate
— By Karen Cordaway Mother’s Day is almost here, and that means it’s time to start planning how to celebrate. Whether you’re looking for a unique gift for mom or hoping to do something special for her, here are five affordable ideas that can fit any budget.
1. Capture memories and let mom express herself.
Journaling can be a way for mom to reflect, recall funny moments, or just express herself. Bookstores carry blank journals, as well as those with a theme or prompts to jump start mom’s writing. Author Donna Freedman suggests mom should put down more than just the cute things her kids said that day or describe the last-minute work project that had her pulling 60-hour weeks. She should write about what’s happening in the world at large and how she feels or fears it might affect her family.
2. Make brunch at home.
If food is more alluring than writing, brunch might be an option. However, eating out on Mother’s Day can be pricey and not necessarily easy with kids. Instead of going out, consider making mom a meal at home by putting the family to work while mom kicks her feet up.
3. Focus on dessert.
Whether dessert is the main event or a way to finish off the day, frozen yogurt is very popular. However, it can get expensive quickly. To keep costs down while satisfying the family’s sweet tooth, implement some
rules (except for mom, of course). Maybe everyone gets one topping instead of two. Also, remind over zealous kids to be cognizant of how high to fill up their cup since cost is often based on weight.
4. Make mom over.
For mom, priorities often shift, and getting the latest mascara, eye shadow, or lipstick may no longer be at the top of her shopping list. Purchase a gift card to mom’s favorite place to buy makeup. If possible, schedule a makeover. Many department stores and makeup shops will do it for free. However, it’s etiquette to purchase something afterwards. Call around to schedule an appointment.
5. Splurge at the grocery store.
Maybe mom has skipped over a fancy cheese or a costly cut of tenderloin during her regular grocery store trips. Mother’s Day is the perfect opportunity to splurge at the grocery store on these types of items. On some level, it will still be cheaper than a restaurant. You’ll have an impressive spread, and mom will be appreciate the effort and creativity you put together.
When it comes to celebrating a special day for mom, we can fall into a trap of thinking the more we spend, the better the experience will be. However, it doesn’t have to be that way. As you get ready to celebrate Mother’s Day, no matter what you decide to do, be sure to check out affordable options like these so you can make mom feel special without having a big bill to pay afterwards.

Before

Everyone has a story, and it’s always the people who don’t know how special they are who are the most special. It was the nomination by some of Teresa Stokes’ church family that caught the attention of TANGLEZ HAIR STUDIO for their yearly makeover. Teresa somehow manages to juggle being a single mother of a teenage son, while also working a full-time job.

Her full-time job involves working with seniors and getting them the training they need to get back in the work force. Teresa and I met at TANGLEZ HAIR STUDIO, where hairstylist Olivia Eaton excitedly welcomed us both. The first thing Olivia did was take time to get to know Teresa before deciding what to do with her hair. Teresa’s only request was that it be a style that she could wear with little maintenance and keep her ponytail. Teresa stepped out of her comfort zone and entrusted her hair, and its style, to Olivia’s expert hands. Olivia brightened her color and put several highlights through the front and Teresa and son Nathan are ready sides. She took a few inches off the back and added layers to soften up Teresa’s features. to go out and celebrate after her After Olivia finished her hair, Morgan Smith put her in the makeup chair and applied a light covering of makeover. foundation and added blush to reveal a beautiful jawline. Morgan went with a natural palette for the eye shadow, a little eyeliner, and a sweep of mascara, and Teresa was well on her way to that fresh start. Morgan applied a dark lip and light gloss. Finally, she handed Teresa a hand mirror. We al clapped with delighted admiration as Teresa exclaimed: “WOW! Is that me?” Teresa’s lovely face was now completely FABULOUS! My favorite thing about covering a makeover is getting to hear people’s stories, so I asked Teresa about her life. Her life revolves around her son, Nathan, and her faith in God. Teresa told me the story of when her eyes first met Nathan’s and the love she felt for him. Nathan, whom she adopted in Guatemala, was a 9-month-old baby with “the most beautiful eyes!” As the evening ended, Cynthia Southerland, nail technician, pampered Teresa’s hands with diligent care. This loving mother’s nails were beautified and her hands revitalized. Teresa was ecstatic with her new look and had plans for dinner with the love of her life, her son Nathan. Teresa is one of those women who just makes life a little more fun than it was before you met her. Naturally sweet with just a touch of sass, Teresa is the true definition of “life of the party.” When a day ends that’s both fun and rewarding for everyone, that’s really a beautiful day!

for the The Kentucky Derby is unique in sports events in that it showcases the finest in spring fashions. Attendees pull out all of the stops when selecting their Kentucky Derby apparel. There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to Derby dressing. In the reserved seating areas, ladies typically wear spring dresses, pastel-colored suits, or bold separates that coordinate with their Derby headwear and accessories.
Dress
When selecting your dress for the Kentucky Derby, the recommended practice is to keep it simple so it doesn’t take away from your hat. You can also let the color and excitement of spring inspire you and select a dress full of color or floral or equine patterns. Remember to dress in layers: the Kentucky Derby is an outdoor event, and the weather can be hard to predict.
Shoes No Kentucky Derby outfit is complete without the spring heel or sandal, but remember: Churchill Downs’ historic grounds can be tricky to maneuver and the day is long, so pack a backup pair of flats.
Jewelry Since the hat is the focus of Derby fashion, there’s not much need for large, statement jewelry. Keep the jewelry simple. You can also celebrate the day with Kentucky Derby-themed jewelry.
Bags
The Kentucky Derby is a long day with a lot of walking, so pack accessories accordingly. We recommend a large bag (within the size limit) to carry anything you might need during the day. In that bag, pack a smaller clutch for your cash, wagers, phone, and other essentials.
Hats
Part Southern tradition and part spectacle, the Kentucky Derby hat parade is one of the greatest peoplewatching events in the world. There are no rules or limits when it comes to choosing your Derby hat. Within the seated sections of Churchill Downs, you will find hats of elegance and style, generally “Southern Belle” inspired hats decorated with flowers, feathers, bows, and ribbons. In the Churchill Downs Infield, hats are a bit more eccentric, all shapes and sizes, some exuding humorous themes. 14 • Flair • 2017 • April/May/June
Dressing for the Derby... Her Derby Style The Kentucky Derby is a chance for every woman to express her inner Southern Belle. A myriad of fashions can be found at any Derby party – from cool sundresses to simple cocktail dresses. But all these styles have one thing in common... A big Derby hat!
His Derby Style
The Kentucky Derby provides a splendid excuse for men to get just as dressed up and decked out as the ladies! But remember, gentlemen: The secret to looking great is confidence. Whatever you wear, wear it proudly!

Shining a Light on the Birthing Experience
— By Carly Mathews
••
Mary Duke is a warrior for women. As the leader of the My Sunshine Birth Network — along with being a trained Doula, a certified Lamaze Instructor, and a certified Placenta Encapsulation Specialist — Mary is working one step at a time to make the birthing experience better for women in Southern Kentucky. Mary is a birth specialist who has lived in Southern Kentucky all her life. Working in the birthing world wasn’t always her plan, but after experiencing a miscarriage with her first pregnancy and a traumatic transfer to the hospital after her home birth, Mary realized that something had to change in regard to how births and labors were viewed. “I realized after my miscarriage — when no one was talking to me about options or what happens next, just putting me through the motions — that I wanted to be more informed and prepared than the education available to me then allowed,” says Mary about her decision to educate herself about birthing. She began going to classes and helping midwives, trying to learn and become familiar with the birthing process, especially births that occur at home. “These experiences were beautiful, and they were what was allowed to happen once fear and anxiety were taken out of the experience,” says Mary passionately about the births she has witnessed. Now, Mary leads a group of women who provide resources to help others have successful birthing experiences. The group is involved in the community and even has “Meet the Doulas” gatherings at Spencer’s Coffee House. As a woman who has gone through both kinds of experiences — with her miscarriage and traumatic transfer, while also having a beautiful home birth — Mary’s main goal is to help women have the best experience possible, wherever they may choose to give birth. “I want to make giving birth better for women in the future and have no one go through the types of things that I went through,” says Mary. Through her work as a warrior for women and for alternative birthing choices, she is well on her way to seeing change become a reality for the women of Southern Kentucky. 16 • Flair • 2017 • April/May/June

DID YOU KNOW?
You’re likely already using olive oil on your salads and in your cooking - but did you know that it also has health benefits that could lead to a longer life? Olive oil helps in the prevention of heart disease, stroke and dementia, as well as cancers of the breast, respiratory tract and upper digestive tract. A BRINGS brisk walk outdoors INTERESTING SURPRISES FROM NATURE! –— Yvonne The Plant Lady
As long as I can remember, the idea that bad weather meant I had to stay inside — it just wasn’t on my mind. Plowing through the snow with the help of the St. Bernard puppies or making the wet soil under the swing set into mud slippers was all part of being a kid and the development of a future nature lover. Hearing my mother yell “Ca-Ca, get out of that nasty water” was very common and that was the time to come in. It’s still more enjoyable being outdoors than anywhere else. On one March day, while everyone cozied up to the woodstove, a friend and I took a brisk walk to the creek. The chilly water was abundant with minnows and the sunshine was filtering through the leafless trees, warming up the soil and encouraging out of dormancy the Woodland Ferns, Trilliums and oh...the fragrant Bottlebrush. This was more interesting than anything going on indoors. It was quiet that day and once you got past the silence, you could hear the trickling of the shallow creek. About ten young doe passed through and the chattering wrens broke the silence. That was pure joy and the openness of the It was on of the March early spring woods exposed the moss covered hillside and some of the most days when the sun shines beautiful textures and colors. The largest on the creeks edge, the majestic Sycamore trees are displaying a hot and the wind blows puzzle patterned bark of white and grey. They were popping out of the woods cold: when it is summer and the tallest of the trees to reach the blue sky. The wild deciduous Holly, once in the winter in the light covered in dark bold leaves, was now showing off their vibrant red berries and soon to be a Mockingbird’s lunch. There is a fallen Cherry tree, its crimson smooth of the shade. trunk now being filled with perfectly-lined holes by the Yellow Bellied Sapsucker – Charles Dickens hunting for the insects that were the trees demise. As a garden designer, I see bark, foliage colors and the shapes of plants as an abstract form of art in the landscape. Distinctive ridges, deep furrowed to horizontal stripes, peeling bark, smooth bark, twisting and weeping branches — these qualities help a nurseryman identify a plant — I used them for design. Though your yard may never be filled with woodland plants like Sycamores and Walking Ferns, you can choose plants that best fit your suburban lifestyle: Crepe Myrtles for bark interest, Beautyberry for berries, Coralbells for foliage and a Snowball Bush for fragrance. This year plan on installing plants with interesting bark, colorful foliage and berries for your garden and I believe you too will find more interest and more enjoyment being outdoors.

Something Old, Something New! Why Choose a Vintage Wedding Dress? A bride wants to feel beautiful, unique, and special on her wedding day. What better way to ensure that than by wearing a vintage gown? With so many decades of designs from which to choose, a bride can easily find a style and shape that suits her, and she’ll know that an army of other brides won’t be wearing her dress. Vintage gowns have many advantages over conventional wedding dresses: better quality construction; more styles from which to choose; overall uniqueness; and price (sometimes). While many vintage wedding dresses are on the small end, they can be found in all sizes, and certain dress shapes are more forgiving than others. There are so many places to look for vintage wedding dresses. It is smart to visit a vintage shop to try on dresses to determine the shape and era that suits you best. Then you can open up your search online. The name of the game is to know your measurements. The next step is to check for “deal-breakers” – what can’t be fixed or remedied without a lot of time and money. These include stained, dry rotted, torn, and faded fabric. If the dress needs alterations, is it worth it? This depends on the price of the dress, what the seamstress will charge, and how much you love the dress. If you fall in love with a one-of-a-kind dress and it just needs a few alterations, then it’s probably worth it. If you love wearing vintage clothes, a few tweaks shouldn’t prevent you from walking down the aisle in a gown you really love on your wedding day.
