Publisher’s Prattle Growing up, birthdays were never a big deal. I always got a birthday present and when I was young, I am sure that included a cake. Actually, I don’t recall going to any birthday parties for my friends. Maybe, back then, it was that way in many families. I have no clue, but for me it was not normal to make such a fuss over someone turning another year older. It’s interesting how social customs change through the years. By the time my children were born, we made a very big deal of birthdays. There was always a cake, a small party with their friends, or a special activity. Of course, nothing as lavish and “themed” as childrens’ birthdays are now! So, why all the talk about birthdays? No, it’s not about me – it’s about FLAIR. That’s right, FLAIR is 4 years old this April. She first appeared on the scene April 2010. FLAIR has embraced many cover artists, local short story and book authors, featured fascinating women in all walks of life and one very cool guy in each issue, and shared tidbits of life to entertain you. Thank you for your complimentary remarks and for reading FLAIR. This issue continues our mission to inspire and entertain you featuring your friends, neighbors, and much more. Enjoy! — Belinda Saltzman

Ever since she was a little girl, she has loved to paint and even created a mini-art museum in the corner of her fifth grade class, which no one appreciated as much as she thought they should! Budget weddings don’t have to mean cheesy tackiness. Sometimes, all you really need is to look closely at your expenses and look for the 3 Cs: things you can change, compromise, or--wait for it-- completely do without. 1. SAVE-THE-DATES. Skip the printed postcards announcing your wedding date and use e-vites, Facebook, email, and the old-fashioned phone to spread the word to out-of-town guests. 2. RELATIVES TWICE REMOVED. The more you can trim your guest list, the more money you’ll save overall. Keep the invite list to the must-haves; then send out a wedding announcement (perhaps with your photo) to the masses when all is said and done. 3. LARGE BRIDAL PARTY. While it may look impressive in wedding photos, a large bridal party is going to cause more headache and strain on the wallet than you need. Ask your closest friends and family who are willing to help you pull off your big day and assign other tasks to those you feel just need to be involved somehow. 4. MATCHY-MATCHY DRESSES. Don’t even pretend you’re going to find a magical dress that looks good on all the girls that they’ll treasure forever. Ain’t gonna happen. Choose a theme or color and allow the girls to find their own dresses that fit them (and their wallet). Provide accessories as your gift instead. 5. PROFESSIONAL HAIR & MAKEUP. For some, this is a non-negotiable, and, if it is, don’t feel guilty spending money on it. But, if you have a friend who’s great at hair and/or makeup, enlist his or her services and splurge by buying new makeup and hair products that you’ll have for the honeymoon and months to come (and don’t forget to tip the person who ends up doing the job). 6. TUXES. Weddings aren’t the formal affairs they used to be. If you’re wanting a more laid-back and personality-infused wedding, allow your guys to relax and wear suits (ties, bow-ties, suspenders, or not...) They’ll love you for it. 7. FORMAL WEDDING REGISTRY. Brides and grooms are getting married later in their 20s, and the need for a formal or traditional wedding registry is waning. 8. DINNER. No one’s coming to the wedding for the Cornish game hen, folks. Let’s skip the formal dinner and do something fun and themed instead: perhaps a self-serve brunch for an 11:00 a.m. wedding or a dessert buffet for a 2:00 p.m. one. You’ll save a bundle, and it’ll be more fun for you and your guests. 9. A “WEDDING” CAKE. When ordering the cake for your wedding, don’t mention that it’s for a wedding. It will automatically double the price. Order a birthday cake, in whatever style you want (three-tiered, etc.). The difference is that bakers make wedding cakes with four layers of cake and three layers of filling. Birthday cakes have two layers of cake and one layer of filling. We seriously doubt your guests will notice. 10. PARTY FAVORS. Unless you can pull this off for cheap and in a non-tacky way, I wouldn’t sweat the wedding favors. Instead, sprinkle your tables with Hershey’s Kisses or provide little treat bags to fill at a candy station on the way out. A votive candle with your wedding date on it is not going to last long in anyone’s house, except for your mother-in-law’s. And even that’s questionable.

The Wine-0-1-1

The 411 on Wine brought to You by Shenanigans Wine & Spirits

Biutiful Wines By Casandra Spears The last few months I have seen snow, ice, snow, ice, snow, muddy pit in my yard, and more snow. I am through with Winter, and from what I see on Facebook, so are all my friends out there. Well now that the snow and ice have finally hightailed it out of here, we can officially jump up and down and do a little dance and give a warm welcome to Spring! It’s time to break out the warmer weather gear, grab some sparkling wine and go sit in the sunshine. Yes, the sunshine, you do remember what it looks like right? Ok, just checking. I recently was introduced to an awesome new wine called Biutiful. Biutiful is a Cava and is very similar to Champagne, but is not considered Champagne because it hails from Spain, not France. Cava is produced in specific regions in Spain using a traditional method similar to how Champagne is produced in France. Cava is made with varieties of grapes indigenous, or local, to the country of Spain. Biutiful is available as a Cava Brut, which is 80% Macabeo and 20% Chardonnay, and a Cava Brut Rose, which is 100% Garnacha. The Brut is a little sweet and white in color. The Brut Rose is sweeter than the Brut and pink in color. While both are great, I really enjoyed the Brut Rose and have chosen it as my Spring time go to wine. Cava wines are not only great tasting, but they are a celebration tradition in Spain. I say we all get a bottle of Biutiful and toast to the arrival of Spring! After all, it has been one really long Winter. Salud!

Here are some notes from the company Grapes of Spain (www.grapesofspain.com)

The Biutiful Cavas are produced at a winery created in 2007 utilizing the latest technology for the production of Cava. The vineyards are based in Requena; a region with a grape growing history dating back to the 7th century BCE. The region lies about 70km west of the Mediterranean Sea and combines Mediterranean and Continental climatic influences. The winters are long and cold, getting down to near 0F. The summers are quite short punctuated by long, hot days with a cooling easterly wind in the afternoons and evenings. The elevation of the vineyards is between 700 and 900 meters and they grow Macabeo, Chardonnay and Garnacha.

Cava Brut This Cava is produced from some of their best grapes sourced from the Western portion of Requena from vineyards with a Northern orientation. Base wines are selected for aromatic expression not neutrality. Production follows traditional methods with secondary fermentation in bottle followed by 15 months aging on the lees.

Cava Brut Rose The grapes for this wine were harvested from the Western portion of Requena, from vineyards with Southeastern exposure which helps to maintain floral aromas. Grapes were destemmed and saw a few hours of skin contact prior to pressing. The wine was aged on lees for a minimum of 15 months without exposure to light or movement to incorporate great complexity, a round mouthfeel and fine bubbles.

Casandra Spears, owner of Shenanigans Wine & Spirits, has a marketing degree from Western Kentucky University and is very educated in drinking wine with seven years of experience doing so. Casandra is also available at both Shenanigans locations in Bowling Green and Lexington, KY. If you have any questions about this article, please feel free to contact her at 270-780-9420.

Sir-PRIZE... Clinton Mills

by Belinda Saltzman

Where does Clinton see himself in 10 years?

ON TOP OF THE WORLD!

CWM

2020

Clinton Mills and his twin brother, Chris, have created a world-renowned company, Hitcents, and they are only 31 years old! Watch out Bill Gates: the Mills are moving on fast! A native of Arlington, Texas, Clinton moved to Bowling Green with his family in 1995 when his Dad transferred here with the Corvette plant. During his years at Bowling Green High School, Clinton appeared to be a typical teenager, working at Steak & Shake, Houchens, and Roses, but typical he was NOT! Clinton was an avid technology student and became very proficient with computer programming. At age 15, Clinton and Chris founded a two-person internet advertising venture called Hitcents. The business model featured the concept in which clients were paid on a cents per hit basis, thus the appropriate name. Their success with the company led Dr. Gary A. Ransdell, President of Western Kentucky University, to offer the brothers a “full-ride” scholarship at WKU and office space in the new Western Kentucky Research and Development Center. Thank you, Dr. Ransdell, for being instrumental in keeping these talented young men in Bowling Green! Hitcents’ headquarters is in the new Hitcents Plaza in the heart of downtown Bowling Green. Hitcents evolved into a company that designs websites, creates groundbreaking custom software, develops innovative apps, and provides creative graphic and marketing solutions for its clients. October, 2012, saw the release of the wildly successful DRAWaSTICKMAN.com website and DRAW A STICKMAN EPIC mobile app. The fun and creative adventure game won five Webby Awards and has been downloaded over three million times! In August, 2013, Chris moved his family across the world and opened the Hitcents’ office in Shanghai, China, to introduce and sell its products and services to the emerging Chinese market. On a personal note, when asked what he is passionate about, Clinton answered, “Family, business, knowledge, and downtown Bowling Green.” His goals for the future include “opening five restaurants in the Hitcents Plaza and making downtown Bowling Green a destination.” For fun in his spare time, Clinton enjoys recreational sports, puzzles, travel, and listening to books. With his vision and entrepreneurial spirit, Clinton Mills will surely enjoy a very bright future. When asked where he sees himself in 10 years, his answer was “growing Hitcents in a global way in emerging international markets.” In other words, Clinton Mills plans to be with Hitcents ON TOP OF THE WORLD! There is no doubt that he is capable of doing just that!

Makeover

The

By Allison Sawyers

February 28th was a rare winter day, one that was filled with sunshine and a hint of the spring to come. I could feel it in the air that this day was the day for something special to happen. Something special DID happen for one lucky deserving lady, Deborah Gibson. Deborah was chosen by Tanglez Hair Studio as the winner of the MAKEOVER contest sponsored by Tanglez and Flair magazine. Deborah was treated to a 6-hour day of lavish pampering that included a facial, haircut, color and style, and make-up. Her coworkers at Experience Works in Bowling Green, Mary Jo Simms and Teresa Stokes, nominated Deborah for the makeover. These women nominated Deborah due to her strong will to never give up while facing hardship. Deborah even admitted that she is somewhat of a workaholic and never takes the time to think of herself. Through the day of pampering, Deborah spoke about the company and people she works with. Experience Works focuses on finding jobs for people of age 55 or older. Deborah has found this work extremely rewarding. Unfortunately, her position with the company will come to an end this summer. She is currently searching for a new job. As Deborah revealed her new self at the end of the day, I couldn’t help but compare the beautiful day outside to the beautiful woman now standing in front of me.

Talk DERBY to Me Hats, horses and a whole lotta fun - the Kentucky Derby has it all! Anyone who has been to the Derby can tell you there is nothing like it. The sound of thunder and the earth moving under your feet as they race by explains why it is known as the greatest two minutes in sports, and the game of kings. Along with those two breath-taking minutes comes a lot of Southern traditions and attitude that are a must have for the day. Those traditions can sometimes be overwhelming when you don’t know what it all means or exactly what to say, but it is nothing a little lesson in the history and the vocab of Derby can’t take care of. First things first, taming your thirst. There is no drink more iconic than the Mint Julep, and it is as old a tradition as the Derby itself. So iconic, in fact, that some say it becomes the national drink for a few hours on the 1st Saturday of every May. The julep is the official toast to the winning horse, but true fans start toasting with them long before the end of the race. While the recipe remains the same, the controversy rages on over chipped or shaved ice, crystalline or boiled sugar, but everyone agrees it must be served in a chilled silver julep glass with a fresh sprig of mint. On the slight chance that the mint elixir just isnít for you, there are always the other Kentucky libations to wet your whistle known as the Kentucky Cousin, and the 3-Step Southern Comfort Cooler. Serving these drinks at your party will set you a furlong ahead of the pack! Once you have your drink in hand, its time to race over and bet on the ponies. Long before lotteries and casinos, horse racing was the only legal form of gambling. It is steeped in rich tradition and superstition. Betting however, can be very intimidating if you arenít familiar with the terms and orders of a bet. So to start, the old KISS method is the the best: Keep It Simple Stupid. First rule of hand, bet with a live teller. They can guide you and help you through the process. As as former teller myself, believe me when I say, it is better to start out asking questions than it is to start betting without knowing what you are doing. Just give yourself plenty of time before the race starts to get that bet in. The teller and the expert gamblers anxiously standing behind you will be more patient with you if they know there is plenty of time before post. Calling the bet in the proper order helps you sound a little more in the know as well. The order goes: Race track and race number. Amount of your bet. Type of bet you are placing. Horse program number (not name) ex: Churchill downs, race 5, $2 on #3 to win.

By Liz Bradley

Whether you are betting on Wildcat Red, Uncle Sigh, or Honor Code this year, don’t forget to set a budget. Otherwise your wallet will be pouring out bills as fast as the bartender is pouring out juleps. And what Derby party would be complete without some stimulating conversation? So here is a little brush-up on the the two races after the derby that make up the coveted triple crown. After the bed of Roses is placed on the winner of the Kentucky Derby’s back there are still two more races to win to be crowned the ultimate race horse, and to go down in racing history. They are the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes. Only eleven horses have ever won the triple crown in the history of racing, adding to the allure of the crown. The beginning of these races is The Kentucky Derby run at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, and is held on the first Saturday in May. The Preakness Stakes which is run at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland is held the third weekend in May. And last, but not least, The Belmont Stakes is run at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York the third Saturday following Preakness. These three races are open to both colts and fillies, and run on a dirt track. However, only the Kentucky Derby has ran non stop every year since 1875, helping to make it the most prestigious race for horses in the world. So, as you head to or host a derby party this year be sure to be armed with the perfect julep, some know-how on placing those winning tickets, and enough derby talk to impress even the most elite in millionaire’s row. The Derby for me is a reminder every year of why I am so proud to be born and raised in this great state, and may the sun forever shine on My Old Kentucky Home! In Memory of Mama-— By J.D. Gee

A ‘troublesome son’ relates the story of his mother’s first love

My sainted Mama, Ella, drew her first breath on a crisp October morning in Adair County in the year of our Lord 1910, very nearly within whispering distance of the Russell County line. She attended and was awarded an eighth grade diploma from the nearby (for the times) Blair Schoolhouse, and around 1920, Mother professed faith in her Savior and became a member of Providence Church at the Stapp Springs. In 1926, she met and fell in love with Carl Helm, a handsome young Russell Countian who lived on the outskirts of Montpelier. (Most likely, they first encountered each other at the Montpelier general store or at Liberty Church). The romance quickly blossomed and a few weeks short of her sixteenth birthday, Mother and Carl, who had turned 20 just three days earlier, took a trip to mystical Gretna Green (otherwise known, at least in this instance, as Clarksville, Indiana). In those olden times, Kentucky’s age of consent for marriage was twenty-one both for males and females. It was somewhat lower for females in Indiana but not quite as low as fifteen. Mother and Carl went to New Albany, where Mama enhanced her age by twenty percent; she suddenly and quite temporarily became an elderly eighteen. Before God and man they solemnly promised to love, cherish, and obey until death did them part, and two young hearts were made as one. The newlyweds returned home and set up housekeeping near Carl’s parents just outside Montpelier and not much farther removed from Mama’s family on modern-day Acree road; they were happy, content, and very much in love. Sadly, however, their idyllic days numbered but tragic few. In August, 1927, Carl contracted typhoid fever and died from complications thereof in early September, two days before their first wedding anniversary. Mother was heavy with child when Carl passed, and my dear old Brother made his appearance in Adair County on a late November day in 1927. She never talked much about her life with Carl or the hard years afterward, but one thought is never far from my mind: Mother, widowed and the mother of an almost-twoyear-old son, turned nineteen on October 29, 1929 -- Black Tuesday, the day the stock market crashed and the Great Depression slouched towards Main Street. How much perseverance and faith it took Mama to survive is farther beyond my ken than is physics to a posthole, but survive she did, and admirably so, by working in Chicago, Cleveland, Louisville, wherever employment was to be found. She later remarried, eventually birthing three more children, the youngest, a son, being a most troublesome child, or so I’m told by most who’ve ever met him. Rest in peace. The author is a native of Russell Springs. He attended Lindsey Wilson College and WKU in the 1970s and resided in Bowling Green for several years before removing to Ohio in 1999. He has compiled a number of booklets about people and events of Russell and Adair counties and writes on occasion for ColumbiaMagazine.com. 14 • Flair • 2014 • April/May/June

Outdoor Living Area Just for You

by Patty Sue Sutherland

Let’s hear a cheer, peeps! You made it and can soon look BACK on TAX season! For all my CPA and accountant buds, I KNOW you are more than happy! Oh, I know there may be extensions to file, but nothing like the living he_ _ that you have endured since January! So let’s raise a glass to those fine people that get so creative they can verify that my “fur” babies are truly my own children, that the toilet paper I purchase is a corrective medical expense, and the alcohol I purchase is for entertainment business purposes. Now I know you wonder, since I am retired, what business I am referring to. WELL, it’s my FB blog that I send out into the world each morning during the week. They refer to it as me providing a “service”! NO, NOT THAT ONE! Wonderful springtime wishes campers! 1/2 full of 1040’s, E-File and this NON-TAXING thing called life!

I’m stu ck in this idea that I need to be au thentic. M y face needs to look the w ay I feel. I’ve done all kinds of things I said I wouldn’t do, and, of course, now I’m thrilled. We can’t save the past or solve the riddle of love, but to me it’s worth trying.

I want to tell women don’t give up on yourself. So you made a mistake here and there; you do too much, or you do too little. Just have fun--smile. And keep putting on lipstick.

I never understood the idea that you’re supposed to mellow as you get older. Slowing down isn’t something I relate to at all. The goal is to continue in good and bad--all of it.

I find the same thing sexy in a man now as I always have: humor. I love it when they are funny. It’s to die for. Diane Keaton Academy-Award winning actress, director, producer, screenwriter, photographer & author 18 • Flair • 2014 • April/May/June

G! ! k! rk! hx !g ! ot !m J! ! g n! kxy • HELP DAD TO ENJOY THE DAY. Perhaps you’ll let him sleep-in this morning, or perhaps you won’t badger him to be somewhere on time, for a change. Whatever it is, let it be his day. Some nice ways to start it include making him breakfast in bed and bringing him the newspaper to read in bed. • MAKE IT A FAMILY EVENT. Father’s Day is by nature a family event. Use this opportunity to get everyone in the family together for a fun day. Think about including all the dads in your family, not just your own father. Could your celebration include husbands, would-be future dads, your uncles, and brothers? If so, do it; the more the merrier! And don’t forget step-fathers; they’re important too. • CONSIDER BUILDING THE CELEBRATION AROUND AN ACTIVITY YOU ALL CAN ENJOY. Some ideas include: • Enjoying a family barbecue; • Taking dad to a favorite sporting event; • Going fishing together; • Going plane spotting or train spotting together; • Playing golf together. • BE CREATIVE. When it comes to making gifts for Father’s Day, perhaps steer clear of the traditional store-bought gifts of tie and socks. He’s probably still got last year’s socks stuffed at the back of the drawer. Expensive or typical gifts are not necessary, but the time and effort you put in to create a personalized tribute will be deeply appreciated. Instead, let your own creative abilities shine and make him something special: • Bake a cake; • Make his favorite dinner; • If you’re artistically inclined, draw or paint a portrait of your dad from a favorite photo or from memory; • Write a poem; • Write a song and perform it. • CELEBRATE YOUR SHARED EXPERIENCES. Look at old photos of you and your dad doing fun 20 • Flair • 2014 • April/May/June

things together. Take a walk down memory lane by creating either a photo album or a photo slideshow. You may be surprised at how many things you both have forgotten about and how much they mean to you. • ACKNOWLEDGE THE IMPORTANCE OF FATHERHOOD. Being a father is a tough job. Dads are responsible for at least one half of the financial and emotional wellbeing of the family. A thoughtful card, a letter, or short speech that expresses your love will benefit both you and your dad. • MAKE THE DAY JOYFUL. The most important aspect of the day is that you are present and attentive. It does not take material presents to make a dad happy; it takes showing your love and reassuring your dad that you’re proud of him and all he’s done for you. For many fathers, the most rewarding part of being a father is feeling that your children love you and the knowledge that each child is on a path to a successful future, no matter what age, coping well with the problems that life inevitably throws at us all. Don’t forget the camera! Pictures will help you remember the day in the future. Understand that becoming a father requires learning on the job. No one is born knowing how to be a great father. • END HIS “FUN-FILLED DAY” BY TELLING YOUR FATHER YOU LOVE HIM. Don’t forget his hug and kiss!

FANNIE FLAGG’S

The All-Girl Filling Station’s Last Reunion The one and only Fannie Flagg — beloved author of Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe, Can’t Wait to Get to Heaven, and I Still Dream About You — is at her hilarious and superb best in this new comic mystery novel about two women who are forced to reimagine who they are and what they are capable of. If you were a fan of Flagg’s 1988 bestseller Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe (and the fine 1991 film based on it), then you won’t be disappointed with her latest novel, The All-Girl Filling Station’s Last Reunion, elements of which recall that book and also the popular 1992 movie A League of Their Own. Mrs. Sookie Poole, of Point Clear, Alabama, has just married off the last of her three daughters and is looking forward to relaxing and perhaps traveling with her husband, Earle. The only thing left to contend with now is her mother, the formidable and imposing Lenore Simmons Krackenberry — never an easy task. Lenore may be a lot of fun for other people, but she is, for the most part, an overbearing presence for her daughter. Then one day, quite by accident, Sookie discovers a shocking secret about her mother’s past that knocks her for a loop and suddenly calls into question everything she ever thought she knew about herself, her family, and her future. Feeling like a stranger in her own life, and fearful of confronting her mother with questions, Sookie begins a search for answers that takes her to California, the Midwest, and back in time, to the 1940s, when an irrepressible woman named Fritzi Jurdabralinski takes on the job of running her family’s filling station. With so many men off to war, it’s up to Fritzi and her enterprising younger sisters to keep it going. Soon truck drivers are changing their routes to fill up at the All-Girl Filling Station. But before long, Fritzi sees an opportunity for an even more groundbreaking adventure when she receives a life-changing invitation from the U.S. military to assist in the war effort. As Sookie learns more and more about Fritzi’s story, she finds herself with new answers to the questions she’s been asking her whole life. The All-Girl Filling Station’s Last Reunion is a perfect combination of comedy, mystery, wisdom, and charm: fabulous, fun-loving, spanning decades, generations, and centered on a little-known aspect of America’s twentieth-century story.

Praise for Fannie Flagg’s The All-Girl Filling Station’s Last Reunion “A beautifully told tale, world-class humor, and characters who live forever in a grateful reader’s world. Fannie Flagg keeps getting better and better. The All-Girl Filling Station’s Last Reunion proves it.” — Pat Conroy

“Fannie Flagg is a fantastic storyteller. She surprises the reader in every chapter with unexpected twists and turns. The only problem I had with this fascinating story is that Flair • 2014 • April/May/June it ended too soon. I can’t wait for her next book.” — Carol Burnett

Fannie Flagg’s career started in the fifth grade when she wrote, directed, and starred in her first play, titled The Whoopee Girls, and she has not stopped since. At age nineteen she began writing and producing television specials, and later she wrote for and appeared on TV’s Candid Camera. She then went on to distinguish herself as an actress and a writer in television, films, and the theater. She is the bestselling author of Daisy Fay and the Miracle Man; Welcome to the World, Baby Girl!; Standing in the Rainbow; and A Redbird Christmas. Flagg’s script for the movie Fried Green Tomatoes was nominated for an Academy Award and the Writers Guild of America Award and won the highly regarded Scripter Award for best screenplay of the year. Fannie Flagg receives the 2012 Harper Flagg is the winner of the Lee Award for Alabama’s Distinguished 2012 Harper Lee Prize. She Writer of the Year from the Southern lives happily in California Alabama Writers’ Symposium, at which Lee herself (To Kill a Mockingbird) and Alabama. made a rare public appearance.

Shout Out

To

Sheila

Dear Sheila, Easter is almost here, and I am having dinner for my entire family. How do I get them to first of all, come on time…and second of all, bring the dish that was assigned to them! I try to be a good hostess, and a good sport, but I am so tired of them coming up to an hour late, and dragging in a sack of chips! A sack of chips is NOT an asparagus casserole! What do I do? --Easter Peeps

Dear Sheila, Mother’s Day this year has got to be different than last year! My husband and kids made me breakfast in bed, but the toast was burned, the eggs runny, and they spilled it on the bed! The kitchen was a mess, and they were fighting about who should clean it up! How can I tell them not to bother this year? --Mommy Dearest

Dear Peeps: Been there, done that! Tell everyone an hour ahead of when you plan on serving dinner, and double up on assigning vegetables, desserts, etc. Or….don’t raise your hand again when it’s “who’s going to have the dinner?” time!

Dear Mommy, Oh,Boo Hoo! There are so many women who would love to have your problems! You have a husband and kids who love you, and are trying to do something nice for you. Put on your game face, and be a sport!

Dear Sheila, I’m getting married in a year, and I really want to “wait until the wedding night”, if you know what I mean. My fiancé is trying to be a sport about it, but my girlfriends are just awful! They keep teasing me, and telling me I’m missing out on the best sex, the pre-married, really shouldn’t sex. Do you understand what I’m saying? --Goody Two-shoes Dear Goody, Yes, old Sheila gets what you’re talking about. The slightly naughty, “ we might get caught”, sex might be more exciting than 4-poster married bed sex, so I might have to side with your girlfriends, but it is YOUR decision. You might ask your fiancé again what he thinks…

Dear Sheila, I’m graduating from high school this year, and want to do something really memorable. One of the guys is talking about streaking across the stage! I thought I might go naked under my gown, just wear red high heels, and flash everyone when I get my diploma! What do you think about that? --Wanda B. Remembered

Dear Wanda, What do I think? Hmmmmm…. I think you’re out of your ever loving mind! Can you imagine how upset your family would be? Seriously, this is one of the most important days of your life, don’t screw it up! Want to ask Sheila a question? Write her at Shout Out To Sheila at P. O. Box 492, Bowling Green, KY 42102. WITH WHAT YOU HAVE

Quirky Is In

Eclectic is the style of the moment. Embrace this highly personalized design movement by bringing a few family treasures out of the attic. Thoughtfully select one or two pieces, rather than an entire curio cabinet. Enmasse, these collectibles can read as clutter, but a prized piece integrated into your existing decor will come off as charming.

Display Your Finds Incorporate mementos from vacations or special occasions into your decor. The move will integrate your personality and life experiences into the spaces, where they can be admired by guests and family.

Whether it’s a collection of shells from a beach vacation or a framed wedding invitation or birth announcement, even the simplest of items become displayworthy when they recall a special memory.

Book-Inspired Tablescape

Bring hardcover books off the shelf for an interesting tablescape or mantel arrangement. Removing dust jackets can reveal a beautiful cover with eye-catching colors or designs.

Paper Updates Wallpaper, fabric, and wrapping paper remnants are all perfect fodder for lining the backs of boring bookcases or built-ins. Score a discounted material and start lining for an easy, instant update.
