Publishers’ Prattle
How can retirement happen so quickly? Only yesterday we were moving into our Twelfth and Elm Street office, or was it our Broadway office, or State Street, or Eighth Avenue or College Street? Maybe if we hadn’t spent so much time moving, retirement wouldn’t have happened so quickly. I “retired” 4 years ago, but that was just pretend retirement. That “retirement” was working with only accounts receivable/payable — no more interviewing, working with or planning new projects. I turned over my Country Peddler files, worked my own hours, and could see my friends at the office anytime. However, this retirement is real — I have to clean out my desk. I must toss all MY valuable materials. Civic projects that I put my heart in like...Hotel Inc. Board, the Hole in One Golf Tournament, the Riverview Antique & Garden Show program, the Capitol Arts Decorator Show House, the Junior Woman’s Club Red Stocking Review program, DRA, Landmark, and Concerts in the Park. It’s like my life’s work is now complete. Well, Belinda tells me “We are just starting a new chapter.” I know this chapter won’t be as long as the Country Peddler chapter, unless I live to be 115, or as challenging (not really up to more challenges). However this new chapter can be rewarding. I have a lot of playmates — friends that have retired. I can enjoy classes through Community Education or SLLL (Society for Life Long Learning) — no homework or exams. I can stay up later, no strike that one. I can sleep later. I can exercise (I hear it makes you feel good). Best of all, I can enjoy my half-grown granddaughters! Although you never really retire until you clean out your desk, if you don’t clean out your desk you can’t start that new chapter. There are a lot of new experiences that might make cleaning out your Kyda West — Kyda desk okay. Co-Publisher
This is the last Publisher’s Prattle that I will write. After 42 years of “peddling” ads, I am retiring at the end of April. As I look back over these years, I know that I have been blessed. I was very fortunate to have a business partner, Kyda West, who ended up being so much more than a work associate — we became like sisters. I was blessed with a workday schedule that included meeting and developing relationships with many, many Bowling Green business men and women, exercising my creative side, solving problems, and being a part of the growth and development of “the little paper with the BIG response” and its’ many offspring such as Flair. Lana Hendricks, our current Sales Manager, who has been with the Country Peddler for 24 years, will assume my position as Publisher. She started with Country Peddler in the Classified Department, part-time. Each time we had an opening in another department, she was the perfect person to fill the slot. She will be the perfect Publisher! I will always treasure the friendships of coworkers and advertisers who have been on this journey with me. I look forward to the next chapter in my life, and with a treasure trove of memories, I say goodbye. Belinda Saltzman — Belinda Co-Publisher

Betty Gentry and Sheila Pruitt had no formal business training when the then sisters-in-law decided to start a farm supply store and grill on some pastureland in Big Meadow, a rural community near the Barren and Metcalfe county lines. ÒWe built it from the first cement block up,ÓBetty said. In addition, with hard work, some on the job learning, and some oil school, the women have built the company into a multi-million dollar operation with 16 full-time employees Ð including Whitney Honeycutt. Sheila attributed the womenÕs hard work ethic as the secret to their success. Betty said they were also bound and determined to succeed after someone told them that they didnÕt think two women would be able to run a business and get along. ÒWe never took advantage of each other,Ó Betty said. ÒWe always did the right thing for the other one. And our bottom line was always the good of the company.Ó Betty and SheilaÕs fuel business started with just one truck, and their fleet has grown to include 15. Big Meadow Oil typically does $20 to $25 million in business each year. Big Meadow OilÕs customers range from farmers buying off-road diesel to large-scale state and federal construction jobs. Big Meadow Oil is an EconomicallyÊDisadvantaged Woman OwnedÊ SmallÊBusiness, a classification used in bidding state and federal jobs where the contractors are required to hire a certain percentage of businesses owned by women. They have six of those jobs going on right now, Whitney said, and they recently provided the fuel for the construction of a new bridge in downtown Louisville. ÒWe used to have to get out and look for these jobs,Ó Betty said. ÒPretty much, they look for us now. That gives them extra points to be able to get a job.Ó ÒAnd all of those jobs have to have fuel,Ó Sheila added. ÒIf youÕre building a road, you need fuel.Ó South Central Bank is so proud to salute these strong business women in our community!

The hardest lesson I’ve had to learn: In my third year, I was dropped from the soccer team in high school. It taught me that if I wanted something, anything, I was going to have to go after it. I couldn’t sit back and hope success was going to smack me in the face—I had to go to work. Ever since that time, I go to work on the things that are meaningful to me.

LIKE Mother, LIKE Daughter — By Carly Mathews
Mother/daughter relationships are without a doubt one of the most special relationships there can be, and Deb Alexander and her daughter, Jessica, know the special bond firsthand. As co-owners of Boutique Unique, the business partners may be even closer than most, which is something that is treasured by both mom and daughter. Boutique Unique is located in Glasgow, Kentucky, and specializes in artisan, hand-made items created by crafters in Kentucky. Both Deb and Jessica enjoy crafting themselves, and although the passion for artwork and craftsmanship is something they both share, a business was not something either women planned. “Neither of us were dying to work with each other,” says Jessica with a laugh. “The boutique was something that just sort of happened, and it’s been by the grace of God.” In addition to local, handmade crafts, Boutique Unique features the furniture paint and stain brand General Finishes. The women showcase how to use the product and also offer custom painted furniture and cabinets.
Boutique Unique Glasgow, Kentucky
“The store wasn’t the original plan. It started out from both of our experience crafting and our “do-it-yourself” attitudes,” says Jessica; however, the passion for the store has only built as the years have gone on. “Once we saw that people liked the merchandise that we were carrying, the excitement started to build, and it hasn’t stopped since,” says Jessica. Mom and daughter agree that though they love working together, it does have its ups-and-downs at times. They both claim that they’re exactly alike; though that comes in handy when anticipating the others’ actions, it can cause some problems when bad days hit either lady. “We are the same. We can work like a well-oiled machine most days, but if one of us is having a bad day, we’ll both end up having a bad day,” says Jessica. However, the laughter in the shop and joy of working with each other cause those bad moods to disappear as quickly as they come. “Working with my daughter is an amazing experience. I get to see her grow as a business woman and as an adult, and I’m grateful for that,” says Deb. “We’re great friends, and sometimes we laugh so hard we just can’t stop.”

ndi Dahmer DERBY PRINCESS
— By Kalee Chism
Every year, Kentucky hosts a festival that surrounds “the most intense two minutes in sports:” the Kentucky Derby Festival. Part of this festival is the Royal Court, a program comprised of a few girls selected from Kentucky and southern Indiana who serve as ambassadors for the festival. This year, five girls were selected. Andi Dahmer, a WKU freshman from Louisville, was one of those five. Dahmer said Derby Festival candidates participate in over 70 events during the semester and also represent the festival. “Over the course of the next semester, we will attend over 70 events, some starting as early as 6 o’clock in the morning and going past midnight,” Dahmer said. She said the Derby princess is an ambassador for the state of Kentucky, the city of Louisville, her native city, and her university. “We’ll get to experience all these Derby events and show the rest of the world and all the people who attend Derby what it means to be a Kentuckian,” she said. Debra Rayman, the vice president of The Fillies Inc. and leader of the Royal Court program this year, reiterated how the five candidates will be ambassadors for the festival as well as the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Being a Derby princess is more than just a glamorous position, according to Rayman; princesses are exposed to networks that can last a lifetime. “It allows them to make the connections that can help them in the future, such as job opportunities, but it is an outstanding opportunity to meet so many different people in so many different aspects,” Rayman said. “We are focusing this year on reaching out more into the community, such as incorporating ambassadors’ philanthropies that they work closely with into their appearances.” During the interview process, Dahmer said, experience with college admission interviews and involvement in the Student Government Association greatly assisted her. “The main thing that prepared me were the college interviews my senior year just because a lot of the structure of the interview process of becoming a Derby princess was the same as that of college interviews,” Dahmer said. Ann Coffey, Dahmer’s mother, said Dahmer’s organization and ambition were enormous assets. “Andi has a lot of initiative. She is very organized, and when she talks with you, you understand that she is very interested and very concerned about what you have to say,” Coffey said. Dahmer hopes to use her position to challenge Kentucky stereotypes and associate the Derby Festival with Kentucky culture. “I am most looking forward to showing other people that Kentucky is Derby and Derby is Kentucky because so often Kentucky is reduced to stereotypes while the Derby festival is revered as the amazing tradition that it is,” she Guest writer Kalee Chism is a sophomore at Western Kentucky University with a double major in Broadcasting and Pop said. “I think that showing Culture Studies. She is a feature’s writer for the College Heights people that they are Herald and an Assistant News Director for WWHR News 91.7. synonymous is the thing that I She loves all things pop culture, WKU, and travel related. In would most like to impart in the future, she hopes to use her skills to write about music and travel to every place she can. my time as a princess.”

In anticipation of Mother’s Day, TANGLEZ HAIR STUDIO wanted to honor a deserving mother with a complete makeover, and they chose LaDonna Fournier, who was nominated by her 17-year-old daughter, Amber. Amber noted that her mother “always puts her kids before herself, never does anything for herself, and is the most amazing person ever.” I spoke with LaDonna and truly understood what a special person she is.

Custom suits, private appointments, hors d’oeuvres, and cigars. This may sound like something out of a classic Hollywood film or an episode of Mad Men, but this level of high-class service can still be found right here in Bowling Green at FHG Clothiers, a speciality men’s shop which features everything from custom suits and private fittings to social events designed for the sophisticated man. Father/son owners Tim and Tyler Brown are passionate about providing the complete clothing experience and being with the customer every step of the way. “The store isn’t like a normal clothing store. We wanted it to become a place where men could get back to the old-time speciality shop, and I think we’ve succeeded with that,” says Tim, who has been involved in retail since he was a teenager. In 2014, Tim was joined full-time by his son, Tyler, a WKU graduate, after Tyler returned from his deployment with the National Guard, and both Tim and Tyler are focused on their purpose of providing quality clothing to their clients, while also building strong relationships with them. Although being able to offer a unique shopping experience for the men in Bowling Green is something both Tim and Tyler enjoy, working in a store with each other sometimes does come with its difficulties. “Our business and personal lives are intertwined, so it gets somewhat hard to separate the two of them,” says Tim. Even though the separation of work life and personal life may sometimes be hard to make, Tim is thankful for the time he is able to spend with his son and the relationship they have because of the store. “Tyler is grown now, and usually sons go somewhere else and don’t spend too much time with their fathers after that point. I’m lucky. I get to spend time with him through the business and watch him grow as a person and a business man,” says Tim. The clothiers offer appointments in their showroom and also travel to their clients’ offices. From there, the clothes are made to fit each individual and delivered directly to the customer. The business also offers subscription boxes, called the ManBox, which allow custom clothing to be sent directly to the client. The final point in the full FHG experience is offered through events held at the showroom where men come to socialize while being able to enjoy appetizers, cigars, and quality clothing from the store. These selling approaches are what makes FHG special to both Tim and Tyler. If you’re looking to be swept back into the classic era of Cary Grant or Don Draper --or you just need a dapper new suit--head over to FHG Clothiers and enjoy this modern specialty shop that features the best of the past.

A Dream that
Won’t Stop Playing by Celeste N. Rehmel
Stage lights. Huge crowds. Singing on national television. Releasing an EP. Most people just dream of this, but for Brandy Neelly, it’s a reality. Brandy is a student at Western Kentucky University and is pursuing a degree in communication: however, she has a head start on her music career thanks to her outstanding dedication and perseverance, with a little shove from American Idol. Making it to the top 15 of American Idol in 2013 wasn’t Brandy’s first rodeo. The rising country singer and songwriter began performing at the age of 9 at jamborees and small events across the state. It wasn’t until age 15 that she tried out for American Idol, making it all the way up to the final cut of Hollywood week. After three more tries at American Idol later, she made it to the top 15, showing just how dedicated she is to pursuing her dream, and her hard work shows. “I’ve been told “no” before, but that never stopped me and never will stop me from chasing for a “yes,” Brandy says. The Nashville music industry anticipates Brandy as a huge success, thanks to her immense talent, contagious energy, and extreme dedication. Brandy moved to Bowling Green to be closer to Nashville and the music scene, her hometown of Louisville, Kentucky, being just too far away for her to be as involved as she liked. While living in Bowling Green, Brandy makes an effort to connect with kids and teens in the area, by performing at events hosted by Bowling Green Parks and Recreation as well as the Boys and Girls Club. Brandy has always loved singing and has found that life is more fun when you do what you love. She encourages
young people everywhere she goes to follow their own dreams, as she did, showing them that anything is possible. “I just want to be happy with the life I am paving for myself. I don’t want to look down the road and wish that I would have spent more time chasing my dreams,” Brandy says.

It’s hard to imagine that this vivacious, pretty young woman with big brown eyes was, a few years ago, a down-and-out IV drug user, a methamphetamine addict. Tammy Durbin started using meth at the age of 19, and she says she did anything she could do, at anybody’s expense, to support her drug habit. Over a 13-year span, she accumulated a 14-page police record. In 2006, she was convicted of a drug-related felony and sentenced to jail for one year. Her three beautiful children, ages 6, 9, and 12, became wards of the state and were placed in foster care. Looking back, Tammy says, “That arrest in 2006 literally saved my life.” She was offered an early release from her sentence provided she attend a long-term treatment facility. That’s where she found her personal “haven.” Haven 4 Change (formerly Phoenix House) was formed in 1997. The facility has served over 1000 women and their children since its inception--providing case management, counseling, budgeting, parenting, and basic living skills to allow families to transition to independence. To be accepted at Haven 4 Change, Tammy had to complete a 28-day inpatient substance abuse program, test negative for drugs and alcohol upon admission, pay an admission fee, and pay a low $303 per month rent at the facility to learn money management and self sufficiency. Tammy describes her experience at Haven: “I was required to find and maintain a job [she was employed by McDonald’s the first week she was a resident], and I attended a 12-Step Recovery program regularly. I learned to ask for help [she learned to give and get support from the 17 other residents and from other resources in the community], and I learned routine, structure, budgeting, and how to be productive in society.” Tammy was allowed to see her children for brief, supervised visits and then longer, unsupervised visits, until eventually, after four months, her children were allowed to join her at Haven 4 Change. Tammy completed the program in December 2007 and voluntarily stayed for six more months so that she could secure housing for her family. When she finally got a house for her family with help from a Lifeskills program, she remembers sitting with her three children and all their belongings (six plastic garbage bags of clothing and personal items) in the empty kitchen floor of the house thinking, “What now?” She reached out to Joni Furlong, Haven 4 Change Director, who reminded her, “Ask for help!” Tammy explains, “Joni provides you with a multitude of resources available in the community to help you get back on your feet, but you have to take the initial steps to make contact with those resources.” Tammy asked for help, and an angel on earth from the 12-Step Program took Tammy to Goodwill and consignment stores where she managed to furnish the house with the basic necessities. Eight years later, Tammy is still working at McDonald’s; she has re-paid loans from those who have helped her; she has re-earned the trust of her children and family; she still regularly attends 12-Step meetings, and she has helped and is still helping women like herself who are starting their journey at Haven 4 Change. Tammy and her daughter, who is now 15 years old, recently moved from her original home to a new apartment. Last March, Tammy enrolled in classes at South Central Kentucky Community and Vocational College to pursue an Associate of Arts Degree in social work. She is very proud to be halfway through completing that degree. When asked to summarize her life philosophy, Tammy answered, “Everything I do matters, and all that I DON’T do, that matters, too.”

TRUDY HARDEN:
Picking Up the Pieces Broken pieces can be painful. They are sharp, jagged, and cut deep. What do you do, then, when your life is shattered? Make something “beautiful,” suggests Trudy Harden, author of Pieces: When Broken Becomes Beautiful. Trudy’s life journey has had plenty of ups and downs, including the death of her husband; ostoearthritis in her hands; drama; character deformation; codependence; deaths and births; bankruptcy and job losses; marriages, divorce, and blended families; self-doubt and confidence; poverty and wealth; war-induced PTSD; alcoholism; healing; ministry; inspiration; saving grace; and, most important, love. “I could have been a deeply scarred, torn person, ripped apart by all the broken pieces, but I found the secret to using the broken chards of my life to create something beautiful,” says Trudy. She has been “a journaler” all her life, which ultimately provided her with the basis to write her autobiography. She was inspired by her friends and church family who encouraged her to put her life story into a published book -- and by a commitment she had made to God during a worship service. “I felt God nudging me to share some of my stories with others for His glory and honor, not mine . . . to share the wisdom and knowledge He has given me over the years with others who might be going through similar situations,” says Trudy. Pieces: When Broken Becomes Beautiful was officially released by Tate Publishing Co. on August 18, 2015, and it has sold an average of approximately 100 copies per month since the release date. “I am amazed at the feedback I have gotten from those who have read it and say it has inspired them and changed their lives,” Trudy says. Trudy is an active member of Broadway United Methodist Church and part of the Stephen Ministry that offers prayer and support to those in the community who are going through difficult times. Net proceeds from sale of her book go directly to support The Foundry Christian Community Center. In 2010, the Bowling Green District of the United Methodist Church felt the call to address the poverty in the West End of Bowling Green. That same year, the District purchased the former Boys and Girls Club, installed a Board of Directors, and The Foundry Christian Community Center was born in the heart of this area of great need. Its mission is to develop leaders among the children and young people of the West End through education, health, and spiritual development and ultimately join with neighbors in doing whatever it takes to bring about spiritual transformation. Since Trudy is a retired grandmother and blessed with beautiful children and grandchildren, this is her way of giving to those in the community who are less fortunate. “In order to recognize good, one must experience bad. The depths of misery can lead to the highest of highs, the most joyous of joys, and the greatest happiness that life has to offer,” says Trudy.”
Trudy and her husband, Tom Dodson, currently reside in Bowling Green and both enjoy playing golf in their spare time. She also cherishes the time she spends with her family. Her life has been full of adventures, and she counts every day as a blessing from God. Visit www.tatepublishing.com/bookstore, amazon.com and Barnes and Noble to order your copy of Pieces: When Broken Becomes Beautiful. It is also available to purchase at the following Bowling Green locations: Absolutely Pilates, Candlemakers on the Square, Lost River Cave Gift Shop, and Rockin’ B Carriage Farms.
