As this issue of Flair is published on April 8, the NCAA Basketball Championship has just been played. As I write this on March 25, we are in the throes of March Madness! I don’t know about your house, but my house revolves around the March Madness schedule. In the beginning of the tournament when there are lots of games being played, we time everything around the schedule; when we eat, when I am allowed to vacuum, when the family room shades are drawn so there will be NO glare on the TV. 98% of the conversation in our house revolves around “upsets”, “coaches falling off stools”, “players who are 7’6”, “where the bracket picks stand” –you know- important tidbits like that. Of course, the Country Peddler office gets into the spirit also. We print the bracket as a centerfold in the March 18th issue then it is taped on the wall in the sales office and updated daily. It is a know fact – if you live in Kentucky and you aren’t a basketball fan (at least during March Madness) then you’d probably be wise to keep that a secret! Otherwise you might be asked to move to Alaska! I don’t think they have any teams that actually make it to the NCAA tournament! The games are over – the champion has been crowned – and at this writing, I can only hope that it is surely a KENTUCKY team! — Belinda Saltzman

Things
To Do Mom Has Had
1. Do NOT stomp up and down like a crazed herd of elephants. Even a herd of wild elephants could not make as much noise as you, my darling children, first thing in the morning.
2. Do NOT ask me what is for breakfast. I fed you dinner last night, and that was less than 12 hours ago.
3. Do NOT ask me questions. Do not ask if you can spend the night at a friend’s house. Do not ask me if you can have an advance on your allowance. Do not ask me if you can have the last container of yogurt or if you can get your ears pierced or if you can have a puppy. I promise you the answer will be “NO!” It’s probably best for everyone’s safety if we just save all questions until your mother achieves consciousness.
4. Do NOT turn on the television. I have no stomach for Sponge Bob or the Disney channel before I am amply caffeinated.
5. Do NOT make random annoying noises. There will be no whistling or humming or giggling or gargling. No “beat boxing” or gas noises or burping just to hear yourself burp.
6. Do NOT allow non-family members into the house. I realize this only happens on weekends when your friends aren’t in school and you want to play, but no one unrelated to me should have to witness the mess-of-a-human being that is your mother before she’s had her coffee.
7. Do NOT tiptoe up behind me to peer over my shoulder just to see how close to empty my coffee mug is. This is only going to tick
me off. It may even make me need an extra cup of wonderful consciousness-bringing caffeine, and then you are just going to have to wait longer…so just don’t do it. Just allow your mother a few minutes of peace until she has the mental and emotional fortitude to deal with the crises of the day.

The Bluegrass region of Kentucky is rich with long fences and longer history. Central Kentucky around Lexington, Danville, and Harrodsburg is wrought with so much history that it’s hard to explain in one article alone. With the accomplishments of Daniel Boone and Dr. Walker understood farther east, the Commonwealth really got up and going here in the heart of the state. . . . Constitution Square and that iconic handshake scene still emblazoned on our state seal. . . . Fort Harrod and reflections of the anxious early years battling the wildlife and the natives. . . . And the overwhelming evidence of the religious fervor that resulted from the Second Great Awakening of the early 1800s in nearby Cane Ridge. One such result is the influence the Shaker sect had on the surrounding region. My road trip took me to Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill, on U.S. 68 just east of Harrodsburg. The Shakers set up a settlement there in 1805 and hung around diligently until 1910, the Civil War having dealt the movement a sad blow in the 1860s. Many technological advancements of the time period can still be seen in the community that at one time housed 500 members. The first water tower in the state is still on site. Plus, you can see the 40 miles of stone walls built over the course of 12 years by a full-time wall builder. I settled for a hike on one of the several trails carved through the woodland nature preserve there (some 40 miles altogether). Creeks gurgling from recent rain and waterfalls made for a great walk near the Shawnee Run Creek, which flows into the nearby Kentucky River. I was within shouting distance of the Palisades and had good reason to return for a future visit. A riverboat from Shaker Village makes frequent excursions to the cliffs. I’ll be back in the summer for that! It’s always a joy to combine history with hiking, all found abundantly in central Kentucky. Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill is located in the heart of the Bluegrass Region near Harrodsburg, Kentucky, less than 30 miles from Lexington.
- Follow I-65 North to Elizabethtown, Kentucky. Take Bluegrass Parkway East to Harrodsburg exit. Take U.S. 127 South to Harrodsburg (15 miles). At first stoplight, turn left onto US 127 South By-pass. Follow By-pass to U.S. 68; turn left and follow U.S. 68 East about 7 miles to Shaker Village, on left.
It is not unusual to find the words GOD and NATURE in the same sentence. They go hand in hand. So it stands to reason that a group of “girls” who belong to the same Bible study group formed a club, F.U.N. (Friends United in Nature). The F.U.N. Club idea evolved from 4 friends in the Bible study who took a 2010 hiking trip in Colorado. It was so much fun, the women decided to get together on a regular basis with others to enjoy the outdoors and the camaraderie that comes with a gathering of girls! The Club has no rules, no agenda, no dues, just a common interest in the outdoors, laughter, and very casual dress. The members take turns choosing and organizing the meetings, which are almost always day trips. The outings have included Bernheim Forrest, Burgess Falls State Park, canoeing on Green River, Wigwam Village, and backyard bonfire/weiner roasts. Donna Lee, one of the co-founders of the F.U.N. Club, describes herself as an “outdoor”kind of girl. She was born on a farm in Pennsylvania, grew up and did Girl Scouts on Long Island, NY, and then later was a Scout leader for her daughters. She and her husband, Carol, and 2 daughters always lived out of town in a rural area. Donna says, “God has blessed me with a wonderful husband, 2 happily married, successful daughters, and 4 beautiful and healthy grand ANGELS.” Just like the t-shirts and hats, Donna could honestly say, “Life is good - God is good.” Then one day, in November 2012, Donna went to the doctor for a routine physical. Chest x-rays showed a “hot spot”on her lung. Donna had been a smoker for a long time, an addiction she hated. Her immediate thought was, “Why shouldn’t it be cancer?” After several inconclusive tests, Donna was scheduled for a biopsy. While she waited for the surgery date, she spent time in the woods on their property praying and making peace with the worstcase scenario. She remembers thinking, “This is in God’s hands.” The surgery outcome seemed miraculous. The “hot spot”turned out to be a lung infection known as “boop”, a non-infectious pneumonia. Donna quit smoking the day the X-ray showed the “hot spot.” Donna’s health scare has made her even more thankful for family, friends, health, and the great outdoors. She is dedicated to being a better Christian and trying to figure out her life purposes and callings from here on out. In her words, Donna says, “I’ll never measure up…. but as my grandmother used to say, “Keep trying the best — By Belinda Saltzman you can!”

Linda Cohron was the lucky lady to be chosen for the Flair/Tanglez MAKEOVER. Linda’s long-time friend, Alice Hoots, nominated her with a detailed account of why Linda deserved to be pampered for the day. In Alice’s nomination letter she explained, “Sometimes it’s hard to believe there is a Guardian Linda Angel amongst us; however, Linda proves otherwise! She is an “Angel” shows off her who fell through heaven’s floor!” After retiring from 24 years at Holley Performance Company, new look Linda made herself available to help those in need. She helped individuals with health issues such as terminal cancer with hospital courtesy of visits and providing meals as needed. Tanglez Hair She took into her home children who needed “safe care.” Always treating children as her very own, Linda mentored a young Studio boy from his elementary school years into junior high years. When asked about grandchildren, Linda answered, “I have 5 biological grandchildren and a “bunch” of God sent grandchildren!” Linda was diagnosed 8 years ago with Stage 4 Breast Cancer, and the prognosis was not good. She beat those odds — however, 1 year ago

the cancer came back, this time in her bones. She was given 3 months to live at that time. Linda declares defiantly, “And I am still here! I am at peace with whatever will be. My life has been MORE than blessed!” Linda and her husband Jerry just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Linda’s day of pampering included a haircut, color and style, manicure, and make-up application. All of those involved with Linda’s makeover felt blessed to have met her. Refuse to be a Victim...
Embracing the
Instinct
of
FEAR
James Stephens writes “women and birds are able to see without turning their heads and that is indeed a necessary provision, for they are both surrounded by enemies.” In a word, we as women have been blessed with superior Instincts. Yes, we are granted instincts from birth but how we develop them can protect us and those we care about. Unfortunately, sometimes we set these instincts aside. A woman’s memory is composed of data that has been gathered over her life. This information may appear useless but when it is needed it speeds forward to help us. While this can be labeled as being paranoid and silly, this data can save your life. This is true as we think of personal safety. In the cases of a personal attack whether individually or in mass, you often hear a witness or victim say “I heard the pops but I thought it was fireworks.” This reaction comes from what we have heard it should be. This can be reversed. It just takes practice. We are taught as women we should always be kind to everyone no matter what; that we should be assertive but not aggressive; and in some cases, we as women should look to someone else for our happiness or protection. In fact, we teach our children to be nice to everyone. We also encourage them to hug people. These habits should change now. Take a mental journey into a public place. You are texting or talking on the phone, have several packages and you aren’t paying attention to what is happening around you. Suddenly, you hear a series of pops followed by screams. Your reaction, while delayed, is required. Fight or Flight…you choose. 16 • Flair • 2015 • April/May/June
21 Foot Rule
Law Enforcement studies have shown that it takes 1.5 seconds for an attacker to cover a space of 21 feet. In Flight mode, you can either use the seconds you have to flee or determine if you are going to stay to fight. These tips could save your life: Re-train your mind to be aware of all activity, people and location of exits. Observation of other people’s actions should become second nature to you. Make it a habit. Mentally practice different scenarios, what happens if? For children, establish a mutually agreed upon secret word that must be provided prior to their going with someone other than designated people. If a child gets separated from you, teach them to find another Mom with kids. The ability to positively channel your fear into a calm directed response, it may save your life. Maintain your personal space. It is okay to move away. Here are some actions that should raise red flags in romantic relationships: Limiting your contact with your family and friends; not allowing you to go anywhere alone; monitoring your communications; any other actions that attempt to control you.
Bottom Line…. if you feel like something is wrong, it probably is! If you are a mother of a groom, then the rehearsal dinner is your son’s time to be the center of attention. It is the “opening act” of the main event, and thoughtful planning will ensure that it sets the stage for a memorable one.
HERE ARE SOME DO’S AND DON’T’S THAT WILL HELP WITH THE PLANNING • DO be respectful of the bride and plan the night to flow with the rest of the event. The biggest DON’T is to try to outshine the wedding day, so involving her at least at the beginning is highly suggested. • DO include the bridal party and members of her family who are directly involved. DON’T feel pressured to invite everyone. If expense or size of venue is an issue, then you should say so. One of the biggest DO’s is to send a written invitation. TIPS FOR CUSTOMING YOUR REHEARSAL DINNER The level of formality for your dinner can be the same or opposite of the wedding. If the wedding is white tie and your son grew up riding in your golf cart at the country club, then the choice is simple. However, what if your son is more comfortable with a fishing rod than a golf club? You could create a ‘theme within a theme.’ Use the bride’s colors but with different formality. If he loves football, then have different NFL teams as the table names. Did he grow up in a different state? Use something particular to that area for favors. For dessert, you could either serve the groom’s cake or have his favorite sweet from childhood. The dinner is usually less formal, but you need to specify. The last thing you want is for someone to be over or under dressed and feel uncomfortable. HOW MANY BOSSES DOES IT TAKE TO PLAN THE REHEARSAL DINNER? At the end of the day, the main boss of any event is the one who forks out the dollars. If the bride and groom are paying for the weekend themselves, they may choose to keep the night low key with no speeches or cute slideshows of the groom. If the groom’s parents are paying, then ultimately they are in charge. HOW TO TAKE CARE OF “BRIDEZILLA” If after having tried to include the bride in the planning from the beginning and she still doesn’t seem to get who the guest of honor is, then your son is your best option. Let him know your plans, and as long as they aren’t unreasonable, have him explain to his bride that your wants are just to celebrate him finding the one. You can pick one aspect of the planning that she could be in charge of (maybe the one that you dreaded anyway).

Whether you’re a fan of Robert Redford’s romantic 1974 re-telling of F. Scott’s Fitzgerald’s Jazz-Age novel The Great Gatsby or Leonardo DiCaprio’s raucous 2013 remake, there’s no debate that both actors portrayed the character, at least on the surface, as a perfect gentleman. Gentlemanly behavior, says John Bridges, is not about do’s and don’ts, but about common sense and courtesy. In How to Be a Gentleman: A Contemporary Guide to Common Courtesy, Bridges combines Emily Post and Miss Manners without being snobbish, boring, or intimidating. Good manners means thinking of others, being there when you are needed, and getting out of the way the rest of the time, and Bridges’ book makes it easy to be a gentleman. A true gentleman is comfortable with traditional etiquette, and a few of Bridges’ more memorable and humorous guidelines include the following: 1. A gentleman does not pick his nose in public. In fact, he is wise if he does not pick his nose in private, since bad habits are far too easily formed. 2. A gentleman does not assume it is the other person’s responsibility to provide the condoms. 3. If a gentleman eats in bed, he always changes the sheets. 4. A gentleman never runs out of toilet paper. 5. If a gentleman must chew tobacco, he chews it outdoors. He does not keep a drool cup on his desk. 6. Unless he is a Texas Ranger or a cattle rancher, a gentleman does not wear cowboy boots with a suit. 7. If a gentleman is given to wearing outlandish hats — such as a deerstalker or a Russian sable cap with earflaps — he understands that he will probably attract attention. 8. A gentleman never asks a woman if she is pregnant. He never asks, “Haven’t you had that baby yet?” 9. When a gentleman realizes that another gentleman has neglected to close his fly, he tells him about it, even in a crowded room. Father’s Day is just around the corner. That holiday has a very special meaning for one Bowling Green dad. Steve Rose is a proud adoptive parent of four beautiful boys. He marvels at the life events that brought him to this phase of his life. Steve was raised on a farm in a small town near Indianapolis. He admits that being raised on a farm does not necessarily mean you are a farm boy. During his high school years, at age 16, Steve started to do some modeling for department stores. That experience led him to Chicago where, for 10 years, he modeled in fashion runway shows for Ralph Lauren and Joseph Abboud. The rural raised farm boy developed a worldview. The opportunities seemed limitless. It was during this time that he was working in a building that also housed the offices of Playboy Magazine. Frequently he saw props being delivered upstairs for photo shoots. With a true entrepreneurial spirit, he saw the opportunity for a business. That spark of an idea developed into a business of renting fabulous, showy costume jewelry for photo shoots. His shopping sprees for estate jewelry sparked his interest in antiques. He was lucky during this time to have a mentor who helped him develop an “eye” for quality antiques, furniture, and jewelry. He had moved by this time from Chicago to San Francisco, where he spent 11 exciting years selling his “finds” to celebrities and highbrow society. In 2002, Steve returned to Indianapolis to be near family. He was managing a large antique and interior design venue. In 2006, Steve’s brother encouraged him to move to Bowling Green to get to know his niece and nephew. Even though he thought Bowling Green might be a smaller town than he wanted, he knew Nashville was close, so he thought he would “give it a year.” One thing led to another. In 2007, Steve purchased Werner Lowe gift and home accessories store, and he settled in to Bowling Green and all it had to offer. He became involved with fundraisers for the Family Enrichment Center. That led him to foster parenting. It all started with Chaz; then one month later, Ian arrived; then the phone call came that Ian’s two brothers, Hunter and Kaylon, were available and in need of a home. Within a one-year period, 47-year-old Steve became an adoptive parent to four boys ages one, two, three, and nine. There were three boys in diapers, and Steve says, “I had never changed a diaper before that!” The community support was overwhelming: boxes of clothing, diapers, beds, and other items started appearing at their doorstep. Five years later, the family lives on a 600-acre farm in a beautiful, historic farmhouse in the Barren River Road area. All four boys, ages 4 to 14, are healthy and well adjusted. When asked how parenthood has impacted his life, Steve answered reflectively, “It’s not about ME anymore--it’s about THEM. This is the hardest job I’ve ever had in my life but the most gratifying. When you hear the words, ‘I love you Dad,’ it makes it all worthwhile.” Steve is the owner of Werner Lowe, a gift and home accessories store, and WL2, a funky, repurposed item store.

The Kentucky Derby has turned the first Saturday in May into its own holiday. It appeals to anyone who has ever groomed a horse, climbed atop one, or taken $2 to a betting window just because of the appeal of a horse’s name. The Derby, also known as the sport of kings, has some DOWN and DIRTY sides to it as well, including secrets, scandals, and superstitions. Some little known secrets of the derby include: • 13 out of the 15 riders in the first Kentucky Derby were AfricanAmerican men • Only three fillies have ever won a derby • No winners have ever come out of gates 17 or 19 • 104 out of the 140 Kentucky Derby winners were born in Kentucky Rumors and scandals have surrounded the sport from the beginning, including the treatment of the horses to the code of silence jockeys keep regarding making the 110 pound weigh-in restrictions. However, none of them are quite as scandalous as the only horse disqualified in the history of the Derby. It happened in May 1968, when Dancer’s Image won the race but then had the title removed when the after-race urine screening showed a trace of phenylbutazone. The drug is now widely used and legal. It’s referred to as an aspirin for a horse. However, the rumor that surrounds the story is that the real reason the horse was disqualified was the outrage Dancer’s Image insiders felt in the May 1968 horse community when the owner of the horse, Peter Fuller, donated the winnings from the previous purse winnings to Martin Luther King, Jr’s. widow shortly after his death, sighting that it was not right to mix politics and horse racing. It’s no wonder that there would be superstition surrounding a sport where $15.5 billion is spent in bets annually. The superstitions range from the horse to the jockey to the money that is used to place bets. Some common ones include: • Never use a fifty-dollar bill • Never name a horse after a family member • Take no pictures of the horse before a race • Use no gear with the horse’s name on it • Garlic is always hung in barns, but peanuts are banned And, as most superstitions go, there are good omens as well: • Always bet on a horse that relieves itself before a race • A gray horse or a horse with gray in its tail is good luck • A horse with one white foot is good, while a horse with four white feet is bad Even the Kentucky Derby trophy was changed in 1999 to have the horseshoe facing up because of the belief that a horseshoe facing down is bad luck. Spring has arrived in the South on a rush of color and heat. Sunlight crisscrosses a day clothed in sapphire. In the distance, a Western meadowlark warbles as I admire the angel figurines I received a few years ago after Mother passed away. Her wind chime sings in the breeze from my back porch. Mom loved all angels, spiritual and plaster. Angel statues covered tables and filled bookcases. My four younger siblings and I were trained to purchase any unusual angel sculpture. Mom’s doctor tried several treatments when she fell ill after Christmas. He recommended surgery when medications failed to control her distress. Mom’s decline began with a hemorrhage and respiratory arrest a week following her surgery. We were blindsided by the reversal. Mom had been looking forward to going home. Quaking at the thought she might expire before I arrived, I barely remember driving 700 miles to get to her bedside. My sister, Debbie, met me at the door to the Intensive Care waiting room. “Mom is dying,” she said, “and she’s waiting for you.” Mom rallied the second day of my visit. We hoped for a miracle. I stayed at Mom’s apartment during her hospitalization. The sweet jingle of her wind chime cheered me and filled her home when crisp February air flowed into the rooms each day. Rules forbad cards, flowers, and gifts in ICU. A special nurse allowed me to prop a Valentine angel on a ledge within sight but away from the machines. Mom’s engaging smile lit a hint of sparkle in her liquid brown eyes when she noticed the felt wings. Her hands shook when she touched the cloth quiver filled with miniature wooden arrows and smoothed the cupid’s red-and-white-checked dress. I’m convinced angels ministered to Mother within her passage. She derived relief and comfort from the presence of Beings she tracked that we couldn’t see. Gracious spirits served as a north star guiding her soul toward eternal peace when the burden of living became too harsh to bear. I saw pain in Mother’s eyes, but never fear. When she died, my siblings and I sent a porcelain Angel of Love wearing feathered wings and a robe trimmed with red roses with Mother on her trip to Heaven’s Gate, and I’m grateful I have several of Mom’s angels and her wind chime. Its melody brings the solace that she is near offering the strength of love that never dies. The wind has kicked up, and the music of the chime is louder. Mother doesn’t rest in a grave. Her presence is reflected in the elements of Nature she loved: stars, snow, wheat fields, each of her children. This morning, Mom’s spirit ABOUT THE AUTHOR... surges in on tender updrafts.
