Publisher’s Prattle So…..here we are again a NEW YEAR. There is so much activity, drama, and yes — EMOTION, running at high levels during November and December that the “quiet” of January and February is welcome! We actually have some time to think and reflect……well a little more anyway. As far as NEW YEAR resolutions go, I allowed myself several years ago to NOT make any. When you look at the literal definition of “resolution”, one of the synonyms is “intention”. Hmmm……sounds pretty loose to me. I would rather stick to a plan that has more promise than “intention.” Goal setting requires more accountability and presents an actual plan. Goals can be broken down into increments that help us to feel and BE successful. Goals are generally written and reviewed. Resolutions are generally spoken (often just spoken in one’s own mind.) So, as far as I’m concerned, NEW YEAR resolutions fall in the same category as a birthday candle wish. The word goal even sounds more “hardy” than resolution. I am certainly not an expert in this area, but I have the opportunity to “prattle” in Flair! Wishing you a 2014 of being the BEST you can possibly be and living life with FLAIR! — Belinda Saltzman

Shout Out

To

Sheila

Dear Sheila, I am getting married on Valentine’s Day in a very small wedding. I want to wear my red formal I wore in college. My Mother says wearing red will make me look like a street walker. What do you think, red or white? ---Valentine Bride Dear Bride,

Dear Sheila, I have the winter blahs. I’m pale, I ate too much over the holidays, my love life stinks and I hate my job. Do you think I need some sunshine to feel better? --- Pale Patty Dear Patty,

Usually when someone asks me red or white, I’m holding a wine glass. In this case, I have heard of women wearing red wedding gowns, they are just as married as if they had worn white! I’d go for it...and cheers!

I think you need a little cheese with that whine! Let’s see...how about dieting, use some self tanner, look for a new job and sign up for E-Harmony! Your winter blahs can turn into a Sizzling Spring!

Dear Sheila, Valentine’s Day is approaching, the day that strikes terror into a single girl’s heart. What can I do on this day so I don’t feel like a big loser? --- Miss Lonely Heart Dear Missy,

Dear Sheila, My husband has given me red lingerie the last two Valentine’s Days. I’m a little overweight and don’t feel comfortable wearing this. How can I avoid the same gift this year? ---Shy Sally Dear Sally, Tell your husband that you would love to go out to dinner instead of a gift, then give him a man-thong and see how he likes it!

Oh, please! Gather up your other single girlfriends, put on your cutest outfits, and go out on the town! Treat yourself to a great dinner and drinks, and revel in the fact that you are not tied down in a terrible relationship! I’ll bet the woman at the next table suffering through a silent meal with her date/husband will be casting you envious looks!

Want to ask Sheila a question? Write her at Shout Out To Sheila at P. O. Box 492, Bowling Green, KY 42102.

VINTAGE

Six Things You Need to Know about Shopping & Caring for Vintage Clothes By Stacy Iannacone

1. How do you find the best vintage clothing? Finding a

Chanel jacket for $2 at a yard sale is an urban vintage-clothing myth. There is a limited amount of vintage clothing, so always be on the hunt. Also, be prepared to travel to find amazing pieces, but the best local resources remain thrift shops, such as Salvation Army and Goodwill stores, and charity shops, like St. Vincent De Paul.

2. Which eras of vintage clothes are best for different body types? The 1940’s are great for curvy women because the tailoring is more defined at the waist and the clothes are cut more generously. Tall, slim women look great in clothes from the 1930’s because they are cut on the bias and the fabric clings to the body. Women who are petite on top look great in everything because a lot of vintage clothing is cut small. The 1950’s is great for busty women because the cups were bigger and the silhouette was hourglass.

3. How do you know the right price for vintage clothing?

For the right piece, the sky is the limit. Some women will spend hundreds of dollars for the latest designer sweater, but then hem and haw over spending $150.00 on a one-of-a-kind jacket because it doesn’t have a label on it. One of the greatest things about vintage clothing is that no one else has it, nor can they get it. How can you put a price on that?

4. What are some tips on cleaning and caring for vintage clothes? Not every piece of vintage can be dry cleaned, so take it to someone you trust who’s not going to blast it with chemicals. Many pieces are cotton and can very fragile. Older pieces should go on padded hangers, and very old vintage should be stored flat in acid-free tissue.

5. What about tailoring vintage clothing? You shouldn’t be afraid to alter vintage clothing. There aren’t multiple sizes of such pieces, so don’t hesitate to put some work into them, but always look to maintain the integrity of the garments. You’re giving them another life.

6. What are some tips for buying vintage clothes online? Double check your measurements because cuts are plainly different. A size eight of today is not the same as a size eight of 20 years ago.

• 401 West Main Avenue 270-495-1529

Keep your expectations in check. A garment might need work. Spend $10 at the dry cleaner or tailor it to make it your own.

• 1217 Broadway Avenue 270-842-0880

Stacy Iannacone is the owner of Ritual Vintage, a New York vintage store that carries amazing finds from designers like Givenchy and Yves Saint Laurent. Her obsession with antique clothing started in the third grade when she purchased a 1940’s beaded dress at a barn sale in her native Vermont. She has worked as an assistant to Mel Ottenberg, stylist to Rihanna.

Paula Short Stilettos in the Morning…

HARD HAT IN THE AF TERNOON — By Belinda Saltzman

Flair is always interested in women who have out of the ordinary jobs or hobbies. This classy lady has found an interesting and unique career path. A South Carolina native, Paula Short moved to Bowling Green in 1985. Her employment opportunities began in 1990 with the business sector when she was an office manager at Poston’s Electronics. In 2005 she switched gears and worked in the security alarm business in sales and supervision of installations. That path led her to a position of business development for Associated General Contractors, an organization that worked with contractors to provide a variety of support services. In 2009, Paula accepted a position as Business Development Manager for Labor Finders, a company that provides skilled and general labor for construction crews. She wears a lot of “hats” (including hard hats) in her position where she recruits clients, works with supervisors and contractors on construction sites determining the logistics of scheduling, does scheduling for construction crews, and manages the job efficiency for construction projects. Of course, all projects work on timelines and deadlines. Paula works to make sure that crews are integrated properly in the timeline so that the overall deadline can be met. Her entry in the construction field in 2005 sparked her interest in NAWIC, National Association of Women in Construction. She was one of the founders of the local chapter of this organization that was chartered in 2007 and she served as chapter president in 2011-2012. The organization meets each month and one of their missions is to educate the youth in our community about career opportunities in the construction industry. Each year they sponsor an event, Block Kids , a competition in a selected elementary school. After an educational presentation by a construction professional, the students are provided with materials and they have one hour to create and build a project with Legos and specific materials. Every phase of the project is judged with prizes awarded to the winners. The goal of the competition is to enlighten the students, in a hands-on way, about the vast number of career opportunities available in construction. As Paula explains, “Whatever their image is – the industry is much broader.” The local NAWIC also serves as a networking tool for the members and provides information about new market trends and new materials, especially materials related to the green effort. Paula explains that most employers are happy to pay the NAWIC dues because she can provide them with benefits to their business. To get more information about the local chapter visit http://www.nawic.org or call Paula at 270-991-0070.

You know, I so love the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, but once they are over, it’s then time to look forward to days getting longer, the Super Bowl and college basketball at its best! There is also a little holiday we call Valentine’s Day that reminds us of love and romance. However, for me, it reminds me of a song Elvis made popular “Are you Lonesome Tonight.” I change the words just a bit and pretend I am singing it to the sportscaster, Dick Vitale. Here is part of my rendition, “Do the chairs in the parlor look empty and bare, do you GAZE at your BALD HEAD and WISH you had HAIR?” I just love a catchy tune, don’t you? Wonderful winter wishes, peeps! Spring is just around the corner. 1/2 full of love, laughter and this song in my heart thing called LIFE!

How to

“ Date ”

How do you keep the romance in your relationship aglow long after the lovelight of Valentine’s Day begins to dim? Julie Spira — author of The Perils of Cyber-Dating: Confessions of a Hopeful Romantic Looking for Love Online — offers five specific tips for “dating” your mate which will help keep your relationship fabulous and flair-worthy, once the sweet sting of Cupid’s arrow becomes just a memory.

Your

• Create a date night every week (Okay, if that’s not possible, every month!): Select a day that you know will not be pre-empted by some sports playoffs or a bridge game and stick to it.

with

• Take turns creating your date: Alternate each week (or month) as to who selects the outing. Get creative. It can be as simple as dining in by candlelight to finding outside events to attend, such as comedy shows, movies, plays, or concerts.

Mate Flair!

• Plan pre-date night foreplay: Show some enthusiasm and excitement the day before your date. Leave a love note on his pillow or send a suggestive text message in anticipation of your special night. Take out the sexy lingerie that has been collecting dust in your bureau. • Memorialize your date: Be your own love historian. Bring a camera along and take photos of you and your sweetheart at different locations. Upload them to your Facebook account or onto your desktop for quick viewing. • Leave the workplace behind: If you’ve had a bad day at the office or a presentation with a tight deadline, keep those conversations away from your date night. There’s plenty of time to talk about work outside of your special evening. Romance requires nurturing and consistency —and focus.

Remember: the simple ritual of creating a date night can help you reclaim the passion you possessed during your first days of dating and can help you sustain that rediscovered excitement for decades to come. All it takes is a little effort . . . for a lot of love!

Sir-PRIZE... Ross Richey New Neighbor – New Friend

by Belinda Saltzman

Ross with Dixie and Julep

I had heard a few comments about Ross Richey. I was told that he was a hard worker, that he cared about community involvement, and that he owned two great dogs! I learned all of that is true. Ross grew up in Bremen, Kentucky, a small rural community in Muhlenberg County. His family owned a farm. Ross remembers, “I had a friend spending the night one time when I was nine years old. My dad woke me up early in the morning to say he needed some help moving equipment. I jumped up and headed to the John Deere tractor, driving it with my friend riding along beside me. As we passed through town, there was our 3rd grade teacher pulled off on the side of the road to let us by.” I am quite certain that the nine-year-old friend was highly impressed and suspect the teacher was surprised to meet her nine-year-old students as they passed by on a big green tractor! When he was in eighth grade, Ross attended a “career day” and heard a local businessman speak about the insurance field as a career. His interest was piqued. Ross says, “I believe that when an opportunity is presented, it is best to take advantage of it.” With that personal philosophy intact, when Ross was a senior in high school, he took advantage of an opportunity offered to him by Bill Greenwood, owner of Lawton Insurance, a family-owned business in Muhlenberg County since 1899. Bill suggested that Ross intern at the business during the summer. “I had been looking forward to a summer of not doing much of anything before starting college,” recalls Richey, “but I didn’t feel like I could pass this up.” That summer began Ross’s foundation for a career vision. Ross attended WKU from 2002 through 2006 majoring in business management. Each summer during his college years, Ross worked at Lawton’s and managed to also attend some industry training. Bill Greenwood and Bob Lawton (Bill’s father-in-law) mentored him. He had the advantage of seeing two generations of business ethics and business strategy. He liked what he saw. After graduating from WKU in 2006, Ross found himself at a crossroads. He had been offered a position with a corporate firm in Nashville. Before jumping at that opportunity, he sought the advice of businessmen he respected. Then he thoughtfully analyzed his own career goals. He decided that he wanted to earn the opportunity to become the owner of Lawton Insurance. In 2009, Ross’s vision was realized when he purchased Lawton Insurance in Muhlenberg County. Since then he has acquired two more small agencies, one in Greenville, Kentucky, and one in Calhoun, Kentucky. In 2011, Ross bought the old Chamber of Commerce building on State Street and spearheaded the total renovation. The Bowling Green division of Lawton Insurance opened their doors in February 2013. “Every day is a new challenge,” says Ross, “with opportunities constantly coming your way: a chance for a new account, a claim that you weren’t expecting, or the responsibilities of ownership. It keeps you interested, motivated, and on your toes.” Ross Richey and Lawton Insurance have embraced downtown Bowling Green. They may be new to the Bowling Green business community, but they already feel like “old friends.”

The Wine-0-1-1

The 411 on Wine brought to You by Shenanigans Wine & Spirits

WINES By Casandra Spears I don’t know about you, but I feel plump, portly and exhausted after a busy and food-filled holiday season. I think most everyone is looking to drop a few pounds and start fresh with a new beginning, possibly even hitting the gym or changing their diet while cutting out drinking any and all beverages with the exception of water, coffee, and tea. But what fun is that if you have to stop indulging in what you enjoy most, like drinking wine perhaps? Well, I say you can have your wine and drink it too! We all need a little enjoyment and relaxation in our lives, and what better way to get it than with a special wine from Charles Smith. You may remember this guy from a past article featuring an excellent wine, Charles and Charles Rose. Well he is still flexing his great wine making skills and has even garnered the attention of the Wine Spectator, landing a spot in their Top 100 Wines of 2013! I have decided he is worth mentioning again, and his Charles Smith line is superb in taste and quality at a low and affordable price, perfect for keeping you in budget after all the holiday expenses. The Top 100 wine is an excellent Riesling from Washington State called Kung Fu Girl. This wine gets a 90 rating and #51 spot in the top 100 from the Wine Spectator, as well as their Best Value four years in a row. Charles explains this wine as being a “kick ass wine with tons of complexity, showing notes of white peach, Linden leaves and slate.” As well as “lovely focused acidity, finishing very long with mandarin oranges and lots of minerality.” Perfect for seafood dishes while cutting back on calories, this is my number one recommendation from this line. Also in the line is Eve Chardonnay, also from Washington State and 100% Chardonnay with great balance, and a long, satisfying finish. This one has layers of tangerine, Asian pear, apple blossoms, and minerals. Pairing perfectly with the suggested Buttery Crab Bread Pudding, this wine is for the cheat day. Another great wine is Boom Boom Syrah, from Columbia Valley in Washington State, 97% Syrah and 3% Viognier. This one is full of dark cherry flavors, as well as tobacco, herbal, and earthy tones. You will get hints of lavender on the finish as well, and this one pairs great with lamb and rosemary. Lastly, The Velvet Devil Merlot from Colombia Valley, 90% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, is a smooth little devil bringing with it classic Merlot aromas of dark cherries, tobacco, anise and cherry blossoms. This one will pair well with beef or roast duck. In addition to the wines listed above, Charles Smith releases new wines all the time, so keep your eyes open for new ones in the future and get these releases while supplies last! Keep up the good work on that diet and exercise, but remember to make time for relaxation and that a great bottle of wine every so often is good for the heart and soul!

Dame Maggie Smith — as Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham — is most everyone’s favorite character on Downton Abbey. Some of her select subjects of scorn include marriage, foreigners, and modern technology! Here are a few of the loveable snob’s most memorable and scathing zingers...

• Everyone goes down the aisle with half the story hidden.

When you spoke of your wedding, she looked like Juliet on awakening in the tomb. • Oh, I should steer clear of May. Marry in May, rue the day.

Things are different in America. They live in wigwams. • When I’m with her, I’m reminded of the virtues of the English.

One can’t go to pieces at the death of every foreigner. We’d all be in a constant state of collapse whenever we opened a newspaper. • Wasn’t there a masked ball in Paris when cholera broke out? Half the guests were dead before they left the ballroom.

I couldn’t have electricity in the house. I wouldn’t sleep a wink, all those vapors seeping about. • First electricity, now telephones. Sometimes I feel as if I’m living in an H.G. Wells’ novel. 16 • Flair • 2014 • January/February/March

— By Liz Bradley

There is something simple yet significant about a table set for two. It sets the mood, while quietly letting the lucky one you invited to dinner know how special he or she is - important enough to make an effort and go the extra mile. Valentine’s Day is, after all, a day meant to pull out all the stops for the one you love. The tablescape throughout a relationship is like a timeline of where two people have been and where they are headed. Nothing defines where a couple is in their relationship quite like the Valentine’s Day table. A few thoughts when starting your table: Start with a simple place setting with the china you already have and build from there. Borrow pretty pink Depression dessert plates from your grandmother or pick up a few red chargers after Christmas on sale to add to what you already have. Shop your house. Objects that are not necessarily hearts or a traditional symbol of love can take on a romantic feel when placed in a grouping with more traditional items. Plan ahead, when out and about, pick up romantic trinkets to be saved until needed. Never forget the power of the simple Hershey’s kiss. A bowl of many or a single kiss always puts a smile on a face and a thought in a mind. Not to mention - it’s chocolate. Flowers always feel like love and romance. While the ultimate love symbol, the rose, may be too overpriced during the Valentine holiday, it doesn’t mean that all flowers will be overpriced. Small bouquets of Carnations or Daisies feel sweet in a playful vase. A bundle of Baby’s Breath seems timeless in a vintage pitcher. Don’t be afraid to go over the top this time of year. Mix shades of red and pink. All bets are off when it comes to expressing love in February. Think of the unexpected touches. Adorn the back of a chair with a bow, a bauble, or a flower. Use old sheet music as a table runner. Adorn the table with numerous candles, as if your local fireman’s job depends on it. Nothing says romance like candlelight. But, most of all, use this time to reflect on how lucky you are to have each other. Look back at the tablescapes that have been behind you and the tablescapes that come before you and enjoy the view across from you.

Annie Erskine:

SUPE RWOMAN

At some point in our lives,

— By Allison Sawyers

we’ve all met women who rise above the chaos of life and stand firm in who they are. I like to call them “superwomen.” They have a million appointments and jobs and seem to excel at them all while never once sacrificing their own talents and personalities. Annie Erskine is one of those superwomen. Annie attended Bowling Green High School from 2003 to 2007 and graduated from Western Kentucky University with a major in Graphic Design in 2012. As I walked through Annie’s house, the first object that caught my eye was a signature-filled plaque hanging in her room. When I asked her what the plaque was for, she casually replied, “I was an intern for Cartoon Network, and they gave this to me when I left.” My mind was blown. Annie had graduated from college only a year before, and she had already had the privilege of working for Cartoon Network! In 2010 while she was still in college, Annie began chasing her dream by creating the company Ionic Comics, which is now famous for producing Magia High, a comic book that is focused on the life of a high school girl, Megan, who is born half angel and is forced into going to a school for magical creatures. In January 2011, Annie enjoyed working at her internship with Cartoon Network in Atlanta, Georgia. Most of her days were spent testing games and building the company’s website. She says it was “the best experience of her life.” By September 2011, to no one’s surprise, Annie was working on yet another project creating mobile video games. As if all of this wasn’t enough, Annie has kept up with the production of Magia High and is currently working for the creative agency HitCents in Bowling Green. Asked repeatedly how she made time for all of her successes, the only answer Annie ever gave was a shrug and a roll of her eyes. Many “superwomen” often succeed at multiple efforts, but they forget to give back to others. This is not the case for Annie Erskine. Annie has used Magia High, as well as her other works, to promote selfesteem in young boys and girls. She makes a point not to focus on romantic plots in her stories. Instead, Magia High features an awkward young girl who blossoms into a confident woman on her own. Annie wants every child who reads the series to know that being fiercely independent is something to be admired. Annie may create fictional superheroes in her stories every day, but what she doesn’t realize is that she is also a superhero to many. If you haven’t caught on by now, we have a superwoman living in our midst in Bowling Green, Kentucky ... her name is Annie Erskine.

Allison Sawyers attends Western Kentucky University and is majoring in Professional Writing with a Minor in News and Editorial Writing. She currently works as an intern for Flair Magazine.

The Single Girl’s Valentine’s Day

Who says V-day is for couples? Defy Cupid by indulging in these seven solo pursuits, inspired by emails from other single girls! 1

2 3

4

Just because you’re single doesn’t mean you’re alone! Round up some unattached chicks and hit the bars, a restaurant, the local karaoke joint, the bowling lanes, whatever. Revel in your ability to have an amazing time, no men needed. Whether it’s George Clooney or Johnny Depp, spend the night with your ultimate celeb crush. Rent a handful of his movies and treat yourself to an eye-candy marathon. Organize a Secret Admirers’ gifting sesh, à la Secret Santa: You and a group of friends draw names and then deliver items like chocolates, flowers, and teddy bears to each other. That way everyone can have a Valentine. Since you aren’t spending your dough on some dude, might as well spend it on yourself. Give yourself some credit for how amazing you are and treat yourself to something special like a mani-pedi, a new necklace, or a blow-out at the salon.

Ask a guy friend out for a platonic date and split a meal at a tasty restaurant. Make a game out of your dinner discussion by looking around the restaurant at all the couples (there will be a ton!) and guessing which ones will actually last, based on their body language. Be a rebel and convince your co-worker bestie to play hooky with you. Instead of sitting in meetings or watching other chicks get flowers delivered to their cubes, you and your pal can go shopping, take a day trip somewhere fun (like skiing!), or catch a new chick flick, sans the crowded theater. Party at your place! Invite friends over for wine, appetizers, gossiping, and good times. To mix it up, make it a theme party, like suggesting that everyone wear all pink (or black, if you caught the “Singles Awareness Day” bug) and create an iPod playlist with songs like Girls Just Wanna Have Fun and Holding Out for a Hero.

New Year, New You “If you want to grow, you gotta let go,” proclaims Gail Blanke, motivational speaker, columnist, life coach, and bestselling author of Throw Out Fifty Things: Clear the Clutter, Find Your Life (Grand Central Publishing, 2009). “Our lives are so filled with junk from the past — from dried up tubes of glue to old grudges — that it’s a wonder we can get up in the morning,” she writes. In Throw Out Fifty Things, Blanke guides readers through each room of their house and to each corner of their mind and heart. Relating both moving and funny anecdotes, she encourages readers to clear away the actual and emotional “life plaque” they’ve allowed to accumulate around and within themselves.

4 26 • Flair • 2014 • January/February/March

Here are a few of Blanke’s interesting suggestions for stepping out of the past and into a promising new part of your life. Throw Out: 1. Magazines more than 3 months old they’re a fire hazard. 2. Old receipts clogging the kitchen drawer. 3. Keys that seem to have no locks. Haven’t had for years - maybe decades. 4. The belief that you’re alone. 5. Twisty ties, random paper clips and safety pins. 6. Trying to please everyone. 7. Containers of partially used grooming products untouched for six months. 8. Makeup in shades you no longer wear or can’t be found in nature. 9. List your insecurities and toss 75% of them. 10. Putting yourself down. 11. The need for everyone to like you. 12. Old athletic shoes with worn treads (recycle). 13, Medicines for conditions you no longer have. (Your pharmacy can dispose of them.) 14. Jumping to negative conclusions before you know the real deal. 15. Mismatched silverware or dishes. 16. Banged up pots. 17. Stale spices and ingredients. 18. Thinking you’re always right. 19. The times you messed up. 20. The need to know how it all turns out. 21. Dried-up tubes of glue - dried up anything! 22. A single sock, glove or earring. Its mate is not coming back. 23. Thinking you have to have all the answers. 24. Sheets, towels or pillows that are torn, chewed or just bum you out. 25. Souvenirs from bad vacations.
