Publisher’s Prattle Well here we go again…. A new year of celebrations to think about. First let’s talk about February 14 - While Valentine’s Day does hold a special place for lovers, it’s meant for everyone. It’s not just a day for passion. It’s a day to lift others out of the cold drab of February and warm them with kindness and attention. Valentine’s Day should be a day when no one feels left out. Did someone say “Mardi Gras”? Grab your beads, deck yourself out in purple, green and gold, and get ready for a huge celebration. You don’t have to visit the Big Easy to enjoy its legendary Cajun and Creole flavors. Try classic Mardi recipes like shrimp étouffée, jambalaya, gumbo, or red beans and rice. March 17th marks the day of St. Patrick, celebrated by millions of people around the world. St. Patrick’s Day is one of the most exciting times of the year, with all kinds of events inviting guests to grab their green, get out, and have some fun. Our advertisers serve as a go-to for information on everything from wellness to shopping to ideas for your next celebration. We hope that you will enjoy reading FLAIR magazine online and in print.

THINK OUTSIDE THE CHOCOLATE BOX: 10 Creative Ways to Tell Your Partner, “I Love You.” Is it more important to love or to be loved? Most of us would agree with George Eliot’s words, “I like not only to be loved, but also to be told I am loved.” Valentine’s Day is the occasion when you can experience both. Have fun on February 14 and remember: love is not meant to be given and received just on Valentine’s Day. Instead, it’s to be practiced every single day of the entire year. 1. On small pieces of paper, write down every kind of kiss that you can think of. Then fill an inexpensive red felt bag with your “kisses” and give it to your spouse for him or her to draw from. 2. Take your sweetie on a scavenger hunt. Ask him or her to answer riddles to find the clues to items that you have placed somewhere in the house or around your neighborhood or town. 3. After enjoying a candlelight dinner for two at home, give your spouse a massage and watch a romantic movie. Open a bottle of bubbly and enjoy a night snuggled up on your comfy couch. 4. Give your spouse a dozen roses. On each stem, attach a note for a future date to do something that you both would enjoy. 5. If possible, go on a date with your spouse to a restaurant that you liked when you first met. After you order your meal, take some time to write down favorite memories from the past year. Then share your lists. 6. Make Valentines from household items. Turn everday items into a gift with a well-placed pun and a few simple craft

supplies. For example, “I get a charge out of you” (AA batteries); “You are the highlight of my life” (highlighter pen); or “I am stuck on you” (glue or stickers). Create an intimate Valentine’s Day evening at home without the children. Plan ahead and arrange to have the kids visit Grandma to stay overnight. This will give you both some “alone time” to focus on each other. It also will allow both of you to sleep in the next day. Make a romantic Spotify playlist. It’s a thoughtful throwback to the romantic mixed tapes of “back in the day.” It’s also a gift that will last well beyond Valentine’s Day and doesn’t cost a cent to make. Make a meal with symbols of love. Examples: write I love you with string beans or make a tart in the shape of a heart. Spread the love. Valentine’s Day is a celebration of love, so consider branching out from romance into charity and friendship. Volunteer at a food pantry or send flowers to nursing home residents. Small gestures can make all the difference for people who are in need of a little extra love.

Dawn Hall might as well change her name to Wonder Woman, as the number of accomplishments in her life thus far is, frankly, astonishing. The holder of a P.h.D; an associate professor at WKU who has helped create new classes and programs; a published author with both academic journals, and, soon, her own book; a producer of short films; and last, and probably most important, mother to an adorable son. All of these achievements, and probably even more, are Dawn’s accomplishments and titles. Although she holds a passion for everything that she does, the one that tops it all (except for being a mom) is anything and everything related to growing others in any way that she can. “It’s all fun,” says Dawn about her multitude of interests. “But the best is being able to help people grow, whether it’s students, family, or friends. I love being of service to them.” Service is definitely something that Dawn does in her everyday life. Through her work as the Interim Director of the School of University Studies, Dawn has been able to help at-risk students, those who are non-traditional, or those who may be underprepared for college. “I really feel committed to the school and to the students, and I feel as though it’s made me a better teacher,” says Dawn. Despite being involved with so much, Dawn still manages to have fun while giving back to her students. As a part of a Study Away program, Dawn is one of the faculty members who takes a group of students to the Sundance Film Festival, where

she is able to share her passion for film with others. Travel can be added onto the neverending list of passions that Dawn has, as she’ll be going back to Sundance for the fourth time this winter. “If I won a million dollars, I would create a travel foundation for students,” says Dawn with a smile when talking about her trips to Sundance and abroad. Although her work with the University Studies school and her Study Away experiences are activities of which she’s extremely proud, Gender and Women’s Studies is where all of her achievements and aspirations come back. Just by talking with Dawn, it was clear that her love was Gender and Women’s Studies, and she shows her passion for it every day with all of the things she manages to balance. “It all comes back to that,” says Dawn about the field. Clearly, this is true, as Dawn is a leader in the good fight of feminism. A strong woman with never-ending goals and aspirations, and a loving mother and wife, Dawn really is Wonder Woman, though she merely shakes her head and smiles while others are in awe. Dawn and WKU students attended the 2017 Sundance Film Festival in January.

Ditching the black, grey, and navy outfits that are our go-tos throughout the winter can be hard, but it’s time to brighten things up with green clothes. Green is on trend at the moment, and as there are a lot of different ways to do green, it all comes down to the shade you choose. You might feel that green is not a color that you are usually drawn to. However, with such a range of hues--from bright greens and emerald tones to khaki and olive--chances are there is one that will suit you. The trick is figuring out which shade is right for your coloring and then mixing and matching with the rest of your wardrobe accordingly. FINDING GREEN CLOTHES Green is often considered a challenging shade to wear, and this probably comes down to the fact it doesn’t scream femininity like some other colors. However, green can be seriously sophisticated and certainly feminine when worn well and paired with the right accessories. Green strikes the eye in such a way as to require no adjustment whatever. What you see is what you get. It has for a long time symbolized balance and is an earthy and reassuring color when looked at on a primitive level. If you’re wary about introducing green fashion to your wardrobe, try a more subtle garment with hints of green, rather than one block color. Pattern can be a great way to introduce new colors. Once you’ve adjusted and worn the color enough to make you feel comfortable, then you can rock out with your braver and bolder selections.

HOW TO ROCK IT Paired with neutral colors such as beige, brown, black, and white, green looks best with something that tones it down a notch. It’s a good idea to stay away from pinks or reds. Try wearing some khaki colored pants instead of denim. Pair your new green pants with a crisp white top for relaxed daytime dressing, or throw on black instead to go with a black pair of killer heels. The khaki will break up your outfit and provide an interesting yet sophisticated on trend look. A dress is also a safe option if you’re new to wearing green, as you don’t have to find another color that works with it. Pop on a dress, and you’re ready to leave the house.
A COOL CHANGE Wearing colors you don’t often wear may attract comment from those who see you regularly; they might think something is different but not be able to figure out quite what it is. Take this as a compliment--a fresh wardrobe change can see you looking more confident and refreshed.
Be brave, be bold, and step out in green clothes. Once you try it, you’ll start to love it.

Justin’s Bloody-Hot Queen Mary (Yields 4 Servings)
• 1 quart V8 juice • 1/2 cup vodka • 1/2 cup silver tequila • 3/4 cup fresh lemon juice • 1/2 cup fresh lime juice • 4 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce • 2.5 Tbsp. Prepared Horseradish
• 1 Tbsp. Louisiana Hot Sauce • 2 Tbsp. olive juice/brine • 1 tsp. Stuarto’s Roasted Garlic Salt • 1/2 tsp. Stuarto’s Applewood Smoked Pepper
Tasty Glass Rimmer
• Juice of 1 lime • 1 Tbsp. Stuarto’s Lemon Twist Salt • 1 Tbsp. Stuarto’s Fresco Lime Salt • 1/2 Tbsp. Stuarto’s Applewood Smoked Pepper
Combine all Bloody Mary ingredients in a large pitcher. Stir well. I prepare my Bloody Mary mix the night before and allow it to sit covered in the refrigerator overnight. Prior to serving, be certain to stir and blend your well-married mix before pouring into glasses. Squeeze lime juice onto a small plate or saucer. Mix rimmer ingredients well and pour onto another small plate or saucer. Using 4 highball glasses, dip the edge of each glass into the fresh lime juce, followed by a good dunk into the salt and pepper mixture, until the rim is well coated. Fill each glass 3/4 full with ice and pour the Bloody Mary mixture slightly above the ice, allowing room for garnishes to be added. Add garnishes and serve. It’s a bloody-spicy way to start a great brunch with friends - enjoy! Suggested Garnishes: Celery, Candied Bacon, Stuarto’s Queen Ann Olives, Peppadew Peppers, Pepperoncini, Lemon Wedges, Lime Wedges, Jalapeno Slice, Pepperoni Slice, Cocktail Shrimp, dollop of Prepared Horseradish.
Bowling Green folks and neighbors, visit Stuarto’s in Buckhead Square - 760 Campbell Lane (270-904-5948) - Tuesday thru Sunday, and let Blake and the staff help you with what you need for these recipes! Much peace & many dishes! — Justin Cline

Dear Gabby, The computer guy at work told me that if I deleted my cookies, my computer would run faster. So for lunch, I deleted a package of Oreos and a box of Thin Mints. However, my computer is still slow. What is up with that? — Signed, PC Dear PC, I have news for you. Your computer isn’t the only thing that’s slow! — Gabby
Dear Gabby, Do you remember in the 60’s when people were saying “tune in, turn on, and drop out”? I wonder if you know what ever happened to those people? —Signed, Flower Child Dear FC, They are now “tuning in” to Dr. Oz, “turning on” their pacemakers, and “dropping out” their teeth in a glass at night. Ain’t that groovy? — Gabby
Dear Gabby, Valentine’s Day is coming up and I am planning a romantic evening in the hot tub. Do you think my neighbors will talk when they see us celebrating in the hot tub? — Signed, Steamy Dear Steamy, Don’t fret. Your neighbors have already had a meeting and talked about you. The consensus was, no matter how bad it looks, you are harmless. — Gabby

Yesterday’s Woman... Bowling Green’s First Registered Nurse Pursuing a profession was not easy for women who grew up in Victorian America. African-American women faced especially difficult odds. Born in Butler County, Kentucky, about 1880, Ora Frances Porter moved to Bowling Green with her family when she was about ten years old. She later attended Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, graduating in 1904 with a degree in nursing. Kentucky first required nurses to register with the Commonwealth in 1915. One year later, Miss Ora was the first to register in Warren County, and, for a time, she was the only registered nurse in town. Miss Ora worked at a private hospital and a state laboratory, but she later became a private nurse. She was very strict about procedures and professional care and enjoyed a reputation as an excellent typhoid fever nurse. Miss Ora lived on College Street with her mother. She liked to entertain, and people remember her house as being furnished in Victorian style. Miss Ora was a faithful member of her church and an active participant in elections and campaigns for civic improvement. She belonged to the Chautauqua Club and the George Washington Carver Community Center and organized the Interracial Commission in 1949. For Miss Ora, being a nurse was more than a traditionally feminine career: her success shows that being Victorian hinged on more than race alone. When Ora Frances Porter died in 1970, Bowling Green lost an excellent nurse and Ora Frances Porter in later life a living link with the Victorian world and AfricanAmerican Kentucky history.
