This is an interesting time of year. So much happens in October, November, and December. For me, it is a time of traditions, thankfulness, and the inevitable hustle and bustle. The traditions remain the same in many ways and yet they change. As I think back on this season, I remember making Halloween costumes (actually my husband did that I have to confess) and making treats for school parties (I did that!) Now, our Halloween revolves around my only 2 trick or treaters, Maggie and Mason, our great niece and nephew. October also represents Breast Cancer Awareness. In this issue, we pay tribute to a breast cancer survivor, plus we offer some important “support” information regarding “the girls”. My family’s Thanksgiving celebrations have changed through the years but have always involved getting together with family. Christmas is my favorite season of this quarter. I have been blessed to be the “Christmas day hostess” for my immediate family, extended family, and close friends for over 35 years. It gets very hectic, but I wouldn’t have it any other way! NEWS FLASH! Flair Magazine won 1st place in an advertising competition, September 21, 2012, in New Orleans at a publisher’s conference. There were over 1000 entries, and WE WON 1st place! Congratulations to Flair designers and sales consultants. As I write this, I am mindful that as the pace of the season accelerates, I need to appreciate every moment, remember what is important, and don’t sweat the small stuff! I hope you enjoy this holiday issue of FLAIR.

Living Life Before and After Cancer At 36 years old, a busy mother of 3 small children, Leslie Priest remembers that taking time to get a routine baseline mammogram was not a top priority, but she went anyway. On April 26, 2010, Leslie’s mammogram (and a later biopsy) indicated that she had Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS), a fairly common type of breast cancer categorized as a stage 0. With a mastectomy, she would have a near 100% cure rate. She was surprised but not really worried because she had no family history, was young and healthy, and had no symptoms, but Leslie was unsettled about the diagnosis. She had lots of questions that needed to be answered. She had an MRI, and on June 2, 2010, she and her family received the scariest news of their lives. The MRI showed a tumor deep in her chest wall. After further testing, it was conclusive that Leslie had advanced local stage III breast cancer. A friend asked Leslie, “What is it like to get that kind of news?” She remembers, “Your first instinct is to panic...the what if’s...what if I die?” Even at that point, early in this journey, Leslie called on a deep abiding faith that calmed her, and she felt a peace beyond understanding that carried her through the hard days ahead. She was told that her treatment to fight the cancer would be harsh, aggressive, and in the words of her oncologist, “We’re going to have to throw the kitchen sink at you!” She received extensive treatment — chemo, radiation, and surgery — at both Vanderbilt and MD Anderson in Houston, from June, 2010 through March 1, 2011. During one of her chemo treatments in June, she recalls an event that ended up being one of those you just have to laugh moments. A volunteer, a well-intentioned older gentleman with a guitar and harmonica, serenades patients who are receiving chemo. He stopped by Leslie’s room to play a tune and broke into song, Oh Danny Boy — a beautiful but very sad song with lyrics of death, sadness, longing! Well, you get the picture. Leslie’s mom and husband were barely containing their shock. Leslie, on the other hand, was trying Cravens and Leslie very hard to control the urge to laugh hysterically! She said she felt like she was in the middle of a Saturday Night Live skit! On March 1, 2011, Leslie and her husband Cravens had the humbling and joyful experience of ringing the bell on the oncology wing at MD Anderson, a tradition that symbolizes the end of treatment. Since that time, Leslie’s post-treatment checkups have revealed good news. When asked what advice she would give anyone who is going through cancer treatment now, she answered, “Somebody needs to be your advocate — your point guard. Cravens was that person for me. Somebody needs to be the liaison between the doctors, the reports, the info, etc.” When asked how surviving breast cancer had changed her life, she paused thoughtfully and said, “It has dramatically changed my life and my family’s life. If you go through a horrible situation, wouldn’t it be terrible if that DIDN’T change you? It was a spiritual transformation for me. I think that sometimes you don’t FEEL God until you so desperately need Him. Post cancer, I feel compelled to live a life of responsibility. I want to make life matter. So every decision, large or small, is scrutinized for that purpose.” Throughout her “waiting times” and “treatment times”, Leslie was bolstered by family and friends. There were constant acts of kindness, words of encouragement, and loving support. “People helped us in ways we didn’t even know we needed!” She is still in awe of the flood of love shown her and her family. Leslie’s story is truly inspiring. It is a story of fear and horror overpowered by courage, love, hope, and, most of all, faith. In her own words, “I have felt the power of God’s love and strength and the power of prayer.” Leslie is without a doubt a lady with the best The Priest Clan - (L-R) Link, Ava, Leslie, Cravens and Tess kind of Flair! A theatricalnam e that hints ofcelebrity statu s… and D arla is a B G celebrity for su re! Originally from Albany, Kentucky, Darla came to Bowling Green in 1992 to attend WKU where she got a degree in Communication and Broadcasting. Growing up in Albany, Darla remembers her Mom saying that she was singing from the crib. “I was the kid who always locked myself in my bedroom and sang at the top of my lungs!” Darla’s first solo was in church at age 4 where she sang He’s Still Working On Me. It’s no surprise that Darla has embraced singing and songwriting as her career. From her first demo CD as a teenager to her first commercially-marketed CD 12 years ago, Darla Day is still singing and doing it with success! Her Christmas CD, My Holiday, is available on iTunes. In 2001, Darla wrote a song for her own wedding, Love Of My Life, which has since received 20 million hits on YouTube and has been sung at many weddings. Love Of My Life has just been picked up for a Canadian film. An actor in the movie had used the song in his wedding and requested the song for the film! Darla’s BG celebrity comes from her performances in the Retro Show with Orchestra Kentucky, Bowling Green, where her “signature” song is Etta James’ At Last. She is very excited to be performing in a disco program with the orchestra in March, 2013. Her recent BG celebrity came in May of this year when she and John McCracken won the I BG song contest sponsored by the BG Area Convention and Visitors Bureau. Darla found out about the contest on a Tuesday before the Friday deadline. Everywhere she went that day — the gas station, dinner, etc.— she was scribbling lyrics on bits of paper. At the end of the day, she texted John McCracken, an Orchestra Kentucky singer, to see if he would be interested in collaborating with her on the song. They got together; John almost instantly matched music to her lyrics; they Tyrone Dunn, recorded the song on Wednesday before the deadline, and a few days later Darla Day & the announcement was made that they were the winners of the contest and Billy Duvall Jr. at the Retro Show with the a $3000 cash prize! Orchestra Kentcky Darla will continue to pursue her love of music through singing and songwriting as well as being a devoted wife and mom. Flair salutes you, Darla Day! 8 • Flair • 2012 • October/November/December

THE WOMEN’S MODEL OF CARE AT
QUESTHOUSE They are survivors! If you don’t have respect for their strength you cannot be of any help. It is a privilege that they let you in - there is no reason they should trust you - none. You cannot know their terror - it is your worst nightmare come true, a nightmare from which you never awaken. It is unrelenting. There has been no safety; no one, no time, no place, no nothing. All was tainted. Hope was obliterated, time and again. That they are in our office is in itself a supreme act of valor. They are our guests and they are all God’s dirty-faced little angels! Treat them with dignity!

Did you know that females in recovery have different needs than men? Females are physiologically, neurologically, and evolutionarily built for relationships, and they flourish when they can connect to others in a healthy way. The QUESTHOUSE Model of Care for Females incorporates these issues into its successful treatment program. Specifically, the QUESTHOUSE Model of Care for Females provides the following:
• Safety, which includes a realignment of relationship patterns to decrease the risk for repeated victimization, a normalization of grief, and a reduction in shame and stigma associated with society’s erroneious view that women and good mothers do not become dependent on alcohol or other drugs. As QUESTHOUSE’s founder, Russ Hopper says, “Addiction is an equal opportunity disease disrespectful to both sexes.”
• A comprehensive trauma history, which provides a basis for females to have a safe place to tell their story, feel their emotions, learn healthy coping skills and deal with conflict resolution.
• A look at relationships because females often begin or maintain alcohol or other drug use to develop or maintain intimate relationships. They are more likely to come from drug abusing and/or dysfunctional families. Because of this dysfunctional family or relationship dysfunction, women receive minimal or conditional support for recovery. Yet females become intoxicated and addicted faster than males and their mortality rates are 50 to 100 times higher than males. QUESTHOUSE accepts guests from all walks of life and is ready to help you on your journey. Give yourself the gift of sobriety by calling us today for more information or to schedule a confidential admission.
May the rest of your life be the best of your life!

With a flourish here and a countryside scene there, Lori James’ home is an exhibition of her talent. Lori is a veteran muralist who has painted the walls, ceilings, and doors of numerous local homes. She is about to begin her seventy-seventh school mural in Clinton County, and Lori said schools are very competitive: “Every school wants a mural better than another school.” Lori’s studio is overflowing with arts and crafts supplies, from paints and brushes to feathers and beads. She paints murals and portraits, plans weddings, makes costumes, and much more. Most of the time, she stays booked at least three months in advance. An intricate mural covers the wall of her “woman cave” that depicts 30 life-size movie characters. The figures look as though they might speak at any moment, and include Betty Boop, The Three Stooges, ET, and many more –- all interacting with each other in clever ways. “I imagined that they were all on set when the lunch whistle blew, and everyone went to gather in the dining room,” she said. A hillside covers the back of her bathroom door - “So you have something nice to look at when you sit down,” she added. A very personal mural wraps around her game room. Lori is a native of Cuba, but she came to the U.S. when she was eight. The Caribbean landscape depicts a brightly-colored jungle with flowers and birds from the region. Inspired by a mural in the White House from the 1800’s, she changed the colors and flowers to suit her heritage. She even included a small red weed that grows in Kentucky which she sees on her walks. Lori said she used her art at an early age to draw pictures to communicate with her teachers before she could speak English. She said her early struggles with homelessness and being bullied have made her appreciate how far she has come. “You have to take the good with the bad,” she said. “I’m very blessed.”

Lori James’ Art Studio
Some of the beautiful works of art created by Lori.
— By Mary Anne Andrews
Lori credits God for all of her talent. She has never taken an art class. “If you have a gift and you choose to ignore it, it fades,” she said, “but, if you develop it, it grows. Every day that I paint is another day of training. You learn every day what mistakes you’ve made and how not to make them again.” Lori’s dad recognized her talent in high school, and he tried to encourage her without pressuring her. He passed away when Lori was 18, so he didn’t live long enough to see her work flourish. Lori’s husband, Kenneth, was the one who encouraged her to pursue art for a living after she painted the walls of their first house to keep their children’s hand prints from showing. It wasn’t until she gave her husband a painting of his favorite album cover, Elton John’s Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, that she began to take her art seriously. “I was just trying to show off, but he was very impressed,” she said. She and her husband owned the Brass Box, a costume rental and event planning business in Bowling Green until 1995. That’s when Lori began painting murals. Lori said her favorite projects are the ones about which her clients get excited. “Once I get started, something clicks, and I want to do a good job,” she said. “It becomes my number one project.”

Recognize this face? Or, to be more correct… recognize these faces? Nick Wilkins and his many characters are like old friends. We have been entertained by the clever old man, the juggling clown who creates balloon art, and a multitude of other personas. Nick was born in Hopkinsville in 1955 and came to Bowling Green with his family in 1963. His dad came to work for WLTV (wonderful, live, television) as advertising manager and director of promotions. WLTV was a local station (the forerunner to WBKO) whose programming included Country Music Jubilee, Kay Payne’s Romper Room, and a live Jaycee program, just to name a few. Nick was no stranger to the entertainment industry as his dad was involved in newspaper, radio, TV, and then eventually worked full-time as Wandi the Magician. Nick started helping his dad at the age of 8 with a sword box trick called the “Dollhouse.” Nick emerged from the sword “attacked” empty box as a clown. By age 15, Nick had L-R: Wandi the Magician (Jim Wilkins), Becky Wilkins Harrell, his own clown act. He Nick Wilkins, Andy Wilkins was employed for birthday parties and some corporate work. His act came in handy when he was a college student at WKU. While other WKU students were earning extra money as waiters and retail clerks, Nick paid his way through college as Broadway the Clown. Nick says, “I always wanted to be a clown from a very early age. I was the kid who snuck back stage at the circus to talk to the clowns!” Nick graduated from WKU in 1978 and was accepted to Clown College in Venice Florida that fall. He was one of 60 chosen out of 5287 applicants. There were 53 who graduated in his class and Nick was one of the lucky 37 graduates hired by Ringling Brothers. From 1978-80, he performed for Ringling Brothers at Circus World and also worked parttime at Disney World. With some great experience under his belt, Nick returned to Bowling Green in 1981 and with a $500 investment, Balloonagram opened its doors. A one-stop-shop, Broadway the Clown AKA Nick Wilkins Balloonagram with rocker Ted Nugent offers balloon decorating and deliveries, costume rental and sales, magic and juggling supplies, and novelties. Nick offers party planning for individuals and companies that includes jugglers, ventriloquists, magicians, face painting, spin art, games & inflatables, pony rides, caricature artists, a dunk tank, and more. Nick has had the opportunity to meet wonderful celebrities in his industry; Red Skelton, Dick VanDyke, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ted Nugent, and Santa. In fact, Nick is a personal friend of Santa and offers his help during Santa’s busy season…after all, his name is NICK!

STOP the
— By Bonnie Strode
SAG
!
“Do your boobs hang low, do they wobble to and fro, can you tie them in a knot? Can you tie them in a bow? Can you throw them over your shoulder like a continental soldier...do your BOOBS HANG LOW?” Sound familiar? Has that song ever been sung about you? Some of you may find this song hits a little closer to home than you’d want it to, and some of you are headed that way much faster than you realize! Here’s why: Did you know that unsupported breasts bounce up to 5-1/2” during exercise? Did you know that unsupported bounce could lead to permanent damage of the breast ligaments? For some reason women tend to neglect the need for a supportive sports bra.
What is a Cooper Ligament?
Will I get a discount if I don’t need the top?
The Cooper’s Ligament is a part of the body that every woman should know about. It’s the ligament that supports the breast tissue and “keeps the girls up.” A ligament is not something that can be repaired, because it’s similar to a rubber band in that it only has so much stretch in it before it wears out. This is important to know because it’s irreversible. It means breast support that comes from your bra is extremely important — especially for exercise! No amount of exercise and tightening can tone the breast tissues. Gravity and motion will wear down the support of your breast ligaments and when that happens there’s no way to get it back! BUT what you CAN prevent is further damage. A regular bra will reduce bounce up to 38%, but a properly supportive sports bra will reduce bounce up to 83%! The proof is in the pudding: visit http://www.shockabsorbersport.co.nz/wawcs0141481/bounce-ometer.html — you won’t believe your eyes! Yes, those cheap tank top bras may cost you a measly $15, but spending $69 on a quality sports bra that won’t give you saggy breasts is a much more valuable trade-off to consider.
Give Your Mom A Boob Job! We aren’t kidding! Be the best gift giver around and tell her you’re giving her a boob job. It won’t cost you a pretty penny and no knives are involved. It’s the “boob job” you get from bra fitting! She can achieve a lift and smoothness she never expected from a bra (not to speak of the instant 10 lb. weight loss appearance). She’s sacrificed for you countless times and now it’s time for you to give her a gift she may not give herself. The proper bra will not only help her look better, it will give her the comfort she may not even realize she could have from her bra. GAME
D AY
! M A GL
It’s Fall and that means it’s time to watch football. When tailgating kicks off in full force, people watching is the real name of the game! Game Day can be a huge social event, and now you can go dressed to party. Gone are the days of just jeans and a logo shirt. Now the biggest rage is going to the Big Game picture perfect in the cutest, flattering and very inexpensive Game Day Dresses and outfits.
GAME DAY OPTION PLAY The most popular Game Day Dresses are made of comfy soft jersey knits in a solid team color – here of course it’s Big Red. They feel like wearing a t-shirt but look like a million bucks. The variations are endless –one sleeved, spaghetti straps, strapless, one shouldered, long and short sleeved, with ruffles or ruching, flowy or figure hugging, mini or maxi, and more. Team it with some cute sandals or flats. Other fabric options abound for Game Day Dresses from light and silky pieces to sweater knits.
PATTERNS ARE THE PLAY OF THE DAY Another great game day choice is dresses in fun red and coordinating patterns, or the season’s hot color blocking in reds, creams, white and beyond. Some looks add a tone like black or gray to vary your game day look and to spice up your game wardrobe. The patterned maxi dress is a great choice here, making a good call in red.
FAST FORWARD’TO COOL WEATHER WEAR When the weather turns cool, you can tackle the change with ease. Pair game day dresses with leggings, and top with a coordinating red, white or black jacket. Throwing on a classic denim jacket is always good to dress down your look a bit. A great play is to add a simple, fun Hilltopper Red patterned or coordinating solid scarf and you will be ready to watch the team warm up!
DON ’ T WANT TO ‘DRESS OUT? If wearing a dress puts you on the defense, no problem. Today wearing jeans to a game means wearing great stylish cuts in game day red and white, or whatever color your team commands. Pair with a great colorful top in team colors and pile on inexpensive matching red white and black accessories and you will be play by play perfect. Just switch out to another team colored top for the next game for an instant replay for your colored jeans! Whatever you wear, have fun with it! Score the best look by loading on some great accessories in your team colors – like bangles, and red and white beads. You can wear the same game day dress multiple times by adding a great belt or light scarf to completely change the look. Look cute instead of slouchy for tailgating, for the game, and hopefully for the celebration afterwards. Say no to jeans and T-shirts, and Step up Your Game in a cool comfortable and so affordable Game Day Dress! BlueTique...Cheap Chic! Easy Shifting from Halloween Through Christmas — By Liz Bradley
Transitioning the trifecta of holidays at the end of every year is always a fun and exciting time. Sometimes it can be such a busy time that it starts to feel overwhelming. Here are a few TRICKS of the trade to set you on your MERRY way.... • Don’t over decorate so much that you have to take down your existing decor. Remember the KISS method, and keep it simple silly. Just add some objects that represent the holiday, but that also complement your existing decor.
Halloween
• Choose a theme and stick with it. If you stay consistent with your decor in either all the same color combinations or the same type of item used over and over, your look will never be too overwhelming or busy. • You don’t have to go out and buy a ton of decorations all at one time or at one place. Let your style and look develop over the years. It will be a true reflection of your personality, and won’t just look like a display from a store. • Rome wasn’t built in a day. Don’t beat yourself up if you can’t get it all done in one day. Start early enough in the holiday season that you can tackle one room at a time. And keep layering throughout the holiday with new finds or new ideas.
Thanksgiving
• Take pictures each year, and pull them out when it is time to decorate. This will save you time and energy figuring out something you perfected last year. Transition with ease and style this year, and make each holiday a little less SCARY and a little more JOLLY.
Liz Bradley is a thirty-something wife, mother of two girls, shoppe keeper, and interior designer. She has one shoppe named LuLu’s that offers fine home furnishings and consignments. The other is Little Lulu’s which offers children’s furniture and previously gently loved clothes. She loves sharing her ideas with her clients.

Dear Sheila: With the holidays comping up, there’s a lot of entertaining to do. What are the rules for serving red and white wine?---Would-Be Wino
Dear Wino: Tradition says that red wine is served with red meat - beef and pork. White wine goes with white meat - chicken, turkey and fish. Of course, at my house, white wine is also served with banana pudding, Pop Tarts and Cheerios. Dear Sheila: What should I give a fairly new boyfriend for Christmas without going overboard? ---Santa’s Elf
Dear Elf: Something appropriate without coming on too strong would be a newly published book, a sweater or CD’s. I once gave a new boyfriend a sweater, and he gave me a fur coat. That seemed about right. Dear Sheila: It seems like I’m on overload the closer it gets to Christmas! The decorating, shopping, sending cards and family gatherings are more overwhelming each year! Help! ---Bah Humbug
Dear Humbug: Simplify this year - less decorating, only one gathering at your house, no handmade gifts. Try donations to charities as gifts. Plus, refer back to question #1 - white wine!

Dear Turkey, Thanksgiving is extremely important in our American history. You should celebrate it as much as you want! How can you not love hunting, drinking, overeating and football? Wait - this is a man’s holiday! Go celebrate Halloween. Want to ask Sheila a question? Write her at Shout Out To Sheila at P. O. Box 492, Bowling Green, KY 42102.

The Wine-0-1-1
The 411 on Wine brought to You by Shenanigans Wine & Spirits
Try These Wines With Your Holiday Meals! By Casandra Spears Red is the new white! If you’re a trendy person like me, you want to be first to know what’s new and popular in anything you do. With the holidays right around the corner, you want to know what is hot in the wine world so that you can entertain with the best and know your guests will be happy with your offerings. Red blended wines are great with Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners and are a perfect addition to any dinner, event, or gathering. Not all reds are created equal. There are some that are medium bodied like Apothic Red; some that are full bodied like Bogle Essential Red; and then there are some that are light and very easy to drink, like Whiplash Redemption Red. Most red blends are mostly Cabernet varietal with other miscellaneous varietals bringing in different flavors and spice to make the wines unique. This is what makes a red blend so great! Each one is different to taste and unique on its own, which gives a person the opportunity to try a different one each time he or she buys a bottle of wine. So, if you’re a “Wine-o” like me, go get a bottle of red and see what you’re missing, because you never know until you try it! 24 • Flair • 2012 • October/November/December
A compelling blend of California’s finest plantings of Old Vine Zinfandel, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah, this wine surpasses all expectation for pure enjoyment and approachability. Rich, enticing layers of complexity, starting with that first irresistible sip. Ripe fruit, intense with flavors of boysenberries and sweet cherries. Luscious vanilla, caressing the palate from barrel aging in American and French oak. Juicy and silky throughout, with a finish that lingers of black licorice and spicy pipe tobacco.
The brambly spice of Zinfandel, dark fruit flavors of Syrah, the bold notes of Cabernet Sauvignon and the smooth elegance of Merlot unite to create this captivating red blend. Intense fruit aromas and flavors of rhubarb and black cherry, complemented by hints of mocha, chocolate, brown spice and vanilla. The plush, velvety mouthfeel and the smooth finish round out this intriguing, full-bodied red blend.
A rich, powerful blend of Zinfandel, Barbera, and Syrah, this classic California “field blend” offers a perfect accompaniment to any grilled meat, BBQ, or hearty red sauce-based pastas. Sweet black fruit, plum, blackberry compote, and chocolate, this wine packs an incredibly drinkable, sweet little punch that will have you rounding up more.
Casandra Spears, owner of Shenanigans Wine & Spirits, has a marketing degree from Western Kentucky University and is very educated in drinking wine with seven years of experience doing so. Casandra is also available at both Shenanigans locations in Bowling Green and Lexington, KY. If you have any questions about this article, please feel free to contact her at 270-780-9420.

The silver finish of the bell is marred with specks of rust. The clapper is intact although I can’t explain what bent the stem. I gained this fossil from my mother. “It’s yours now,” she said to me one day. Eldest of five, I often receive the family castoffs that Mom can’t bear to relinquish to a trash can. I prefer to believe the reason is a tribute to my level-headed judgment of whether something is worth keeping. More likely it’s because I have more closet space. As for this silver bell, it once adorned our tree along with dozens of its kind in various hues, surrounded by tinsel garland, bubble lights, and plastic icicles that glimmered a spooky blue in the dark. The ornament was a fixture through the years when Linda, my — by Mariah Julio younger sister, and I kept each other awake as long as possbile on Christmas Eve, fueled by excitement and a desire to catch Santa at work. We wanted to see if he actually read those letters Mom mailed for us to the North Pole each year. He’d prove he was on top of the game if he left the desires of our hearts. This year, as I always do, I’ll hang my relic from seasons past on a front bough near the top of the tree. The lone, battered decoration is a particle of our heritage and holds a place of honor among costly glass globes. At twilight on Christmas Eve, hours before we drive to Midnight Mass, my family will gather in the amiable glow from the fireplace and hundreds of tiny colored lights. We’ll be sated from the feast and nearly hypnotized by the white Christ candle sputtering in the center of the Advent wreath. Our holiday rituals vary little. We’ve discovered solace in routine. I’d like to say we sing carols around the piano, but nobody plays and I can’t think of a more tone deaf group. Instead, we settle onto sofas and chairs. Some sprawl on the floor pounding pillows until the dip feels right, shoes off and toes toasty. Debris from the gift exchange is already cleared away. Presents, stripped of wrappings, pile near the door awaiting transfer to automobiles parked nose to tail in the driveway. “Anyone want dessert?” a relative asks in a drowsy tone. Nobody moves. Someone snores. Another giggles at the sound. Margie, the cat, arches her back in a stretch, yawns, then exits her favorite roost atop the striped blanket on the back of the loveseat--a graceful evasion tactic designed to thwart the three-year-old about to snag a handful of fur. A needle of freezing air stabs the room when my husband lets the dog, stuffed with turkey tidbits panhandled from the

kids, outdoors for a romp. Cold rousts us from inertia as it slides into corners and pockets of warmth. Youngsters grow restless and fuss with new toys. A couple of teenagers plot minor devilment they’re too tired to peform after flying kites in the morning. A grinning, red-haired adolescent flicks the venerable bell until it tinkles. “Let’s get some stories rolling,” he says before flopping on the hearth, his back to the flames. “We’ll all smile and in the dim light a voice begins, “When we were growing up, at Christmas we’d...” Smooth as Belgian chocolate, vintage memories flow. I wink at my sister. Linda is steeped in happy thoughts, her expression glazed. Scattered about my living room are the heartbeats of our lives. Laughter blends with the crackle of burning wood and the scents of bayberry and evergreen. The little bell shimmers in the muted light. I imagine that if this treasure could talk, it would be as thrilled as I am to share this joyous experience for one more year. Mariah Julio has published essays and stories in www.FaithHopeandFiction.com, This I Believe, Patchwork Path: Friendship Star, Patchwork Path: Treasure Box, newspapers and periodicals. As a member of SkyWriters writing group, she is midway through editing her first novel.

...WITHOUT THE JIGGLE!
Most people attend tons of festive holiday events, and nearly all of them center around fattening food. Add seasonal stress and zero time to hit the gym, and you have a recipe for holiday weight gain, but not this year. Experts at Women’s Health Magazine came up with some terrific tips to help you survive the hectic holiday season. HOLIDAY PARTIES - It’s inevitable that you’ll be going to at least a few soirees this holiday season. Here are a few tactics you can employ. • Sip Smartly: With alcohol, the goal is to keep both your calories and your buzz under control. If you usually make several trips to the bar, ask the bartender to fill your glass only halfway. Also, champagne or pink Prosecco are both great low-calorie, sippable options. • Work the Room: Stay away from the food table. You won’t eat mindlessly if you have to cross the room to get to the food or if you’re chatting someone up. Hors d’oeuvres add up fast, so limit yourself to a few that you love. BAKING - There are many pitfalls when it comes to holiday baking. Baked goods aren’t known to be health foods, and then there are the temptations while you’re baking. • Cut The Fat, Not The Taste: There are clever ways to cut fat from holiday treats while not sacrificing taste. In cookies, use half whole-wheat pastry flour and half all-purpose flour. In brownies, cakey cookies, and fruit breads, use pureed pumpkin instead of oil. • Resist the Temptation to Taste: To resist the temptation to taste, clean as you go. This protects you from nibbling, and cleanup is that much easier. THE BIG MEAL - Once you’ve successfully navigated your way through the parties and baking, there’s still another pitfall: the big, sit-down holiday meal. Don’t fret; there are tactics to make it through without feeling as if you’re the stuffed turkey. • Downsize Your Dishware: People eat what’s put on their plates, so if you have huge dinner plates, buy smaller dishes. Also, downsize your glasses so you don’t consume too many liquid calories. • Have a Game Plan: The more food options there are, the more we want to try, so practice portion control. Your total carbs should be the size of your fist. Lean proteins should be the size and thickness of your palm (no fingers). • Make Conscious Indulgences: If you know you won’t be able to pass up that piece of cheesecake, don’t deprive yourself. Instead, pass on the roll with butter at dinner and have a small piece of cheesecake. • Get Creative with Your Leftovers: Use leftovers to your advantage. For example, shred fresh turkey over spinach salad, or if you served ham, try a protein-charged ham omelet. This year, when your social schedule begins to expand during the holidays, your waistline doesn’t have to. Just follow these few tips as you end the old year to start the new year off healthy and happy. 30 • Flair • 2012 • October/November/December

How We Show You We Love You By Anne Murray
One day while working with an all male team of employees, I asked them to make a list of ways they show their wives or romantic partners how they demonstrate their love. I sorted the men into groups based on their preference for Thinking or Feeling in decision making. Thinking preferenced men (approximately 65% of all men) make decisions using logic, critical, analytical thinking, and principle based criteria. Most engineers, accountants, cardiologists, and scientists prefer this function. Sometimes, when they fail to use the Feeling values, we call them Cold Pricklies. When they seek a marriage partner, they report
“Thinker” Men listed these items in response to How We Show You We Love You
“Feeler” Men listed these items in response to How We Show You We Love You
• Bring home money • Pay the bills • Provide security (money) • Open a 401K • Home maintenance • Give guidance to the children • Give you our time • Give you space • Give you physical attention • Act like we enjoy the activities that you do
• Tell you we love you (often, even daily) • Remember important dates such as anniversaries, birthdays, etc. • Give kind words, as we see listening as an act of love • Take on household duties • Kiss them often and always kiss goodbye • Personalize greeting cards • Send flowers or gifts for no reason • Communicate, communicate, communicate • Sacrifice for those we love • Physical touch

looking for an “appropriate candidate”. They are hardwired to critique and fix. Feeling preferenced men (approximately 35% of all men) make decisions that may include subjectivity, valuing most the impact the decision will have on people and considering the feelings of all involved. Counselors, writers, family practitioners, and marketing professionals typically prefer this function. Because of their demonstrated caring, we call them Warm Fuzzies. When they seek a marriage partner, they report looking for their soul mate. They are hardwired to appreciate and support. Obviously, Thinkers feel and Feelers think. We simply prefer one over the other. The first four items on the Thinking List are based on money and providing. The other items suggest that showing someone you love them involves physical activities. The list is practical, logical, sensible, and focused on safety and security, The Feelers List more closely parallels the wish lists of most women. It even includes the word sacrifice, a word I have never seen yet on a Thinker list. Is it any wonder that the Feeling Men are called Babe Magnets? They are perceived by women as warm, caring, good listeners, and naturally seductive. Women favor feeling over thinking, 65% to 35%, These men taught me a valuable lesson that day about differences. Thinking men show us they love us by installing an alarm system, providing a GPS, maintaining the home, scraping your windshield, replacing your tires, etc. While the Feeler may give you the fantasy, excitement, intimacy, and romance you may crave, this does not mean that the Feeler loves you more than the Thinker loves you. It just looks different. Women, love your Thinking Men by recognizing how they show you they love you. Thank them for giving you safety and security. Love your Feeling Men by becoming more seductive than they are! That should keep them around.

By Mary Anne Andrews When a Los Angeles number came up on her cell phone, Marissa Butler could never have dreamed what was about to happen. “Are you serious?” she asked when the assistant to the executive producer of American Idol told her auditions were coming to Bowling Green. The American Idol Small Town Bus Tour rolled in to its sixth stop at Bowling Green’s historic Fountain Square Park on Friday, August 18, 2012, to overwhelming local support. The twelfth season of Fox’s hit show will highlight auditions in ten small towns, including Bowling Green. Marissa Butler, Public Relations Director at the Bowling Green Area Convention & Visitors Bureau, said the day was electric: “I was thinking, ‘Wow! They’re here. This is awesome. Let’s show them a big welcome.’” Auditions began at 8:00am as about 2,500 anxious auditioners, family and friends wrapped around the square. The estimate of 800 hopefuls was blown out of the water early in the day. Producers stayed an extra hour, until 5:00pm, so they could hear everyone in line. Marissa said the crew loved the Bowling Green welcome, and she hopes that warmth translates onto the show. The producers wore “I love BG” pins, and many crew members wore the t-shirts. “The crew was impressed by the neat, intimate feel of Bowling Green,” she said. “That was truly special. It turned out to be a beautiful afteroon, and with all the historic buildings and colors, it was a great opportunity for exposure for Bowling Green.” Marissa said Bowling Green competes for name recognition and 34 • Flair • 2012 • October/November/December

for distinction from other cities named Bowling Green. Also, it was a big sales day for the downtown shop owners, many of whom decorated their windows with American Idol signs and lights. “They [the shop owners] showed a great deal of gratitude to us for proposing that it be downtown.” Marissa hopes to see many Bowling Green scenes in the B-roll (American Idol alternate footage). The show will give Bowling Green great publicity as a tourist location and perhaps even as a movie location. “We have a quintessential small town square,” she said. “The ultimate benefit of the show would be future film opportunities.” If one of the 12 finalists is from Bowling Green, Marissa said the name recognition and exposure will be huge. She estimates that over 30 people who auditioned were given a “golden ticket” to the next round. The American Idol camera crew shot footage of the downtown scenery, WKU’s Big Red, The Hot Rod’s mascot Roscoe, in addition to several other iconic locations around town. Marissa believes that Bowling Green was chosen by the show because WKU and the local music scene made it the right place at the right time. Marissa has been at the visitors bureau five years. “I really enjoy the multifaceted nature of the office,” she said. “There are many different projects that we put our efforts toward.” She sees big changes coming in Bowling Green, and she is excited to be a part of them. “We’re becoming a hub - the Nashville of this region,” she said. “The best is yet to come.”
