I love this season! Actually, I love all the different seasons, but fall/ winter season brings all kinds of special treats: the bright colors; the sounds of marching bands on the football field; the bells of Christmas; the hustle and bustle; and the opportunity to get out the flannel sheets and make the first pot of chili or vegetable soup. Don’t get me wrong. I will be joining the throngs of women everywhere scurrying around to get it all done, wondering where I will find the time to do ALL that the holidays require, and feeling overwhelmed at times. I like to start the season by appreciating all the GOOD changes it has in store BEFORE I get too tired to think about it! This issue of Flair has something representative of Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and, of course, articles ABOUT and WRITTEN by your friends and neighbors. We hope this issue will get you in the mood and all revved up for the holidays! Sit back, prop up your feet, and enjoy reading FLAIR now…before, as Max says, “the wild ruckus” begins! — Belinda Saltzman

Mackenzie Rayne

Sta rs in her eyes ...the ground under her feet Mackenzie Rayne has found the formula for making a dream come true: the raven-haired beauty has looks, charm, intelligence, talent, drive, education, and a well-thought-out plan. Mackenzie, whose birth name is Jessica Harris, is a Bowling Green girl. She attended Greenwood High and then WKU, where she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in May, 2013. As a high school student, she was a technician for stage productions, and she worked with the Kentucky Repertoire Theatre in Horse Cave, appearing as Juliet in Romeo & Juliet and Helena in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Her main appearance at WKU was a role in Les Liaisons Dangereuses, and she also participated in community theatre productions, including ones presented at The Phoenix Theatre and at Capitol Arts. This is where the story diverges from the usual. Mackenzie, although talented and ambitious, had her head somewhere far from in the clouds. A “straight-A” student, she used her brainpower to thoughtfully analyze her strengths and weaknesses in regard to a career in performing arts. Theatre is her passion, but her singing and dancing skill levels were only adequate, not exceptional. Because of this fact, she decided to set her sights on film instead of the stage. While the theatre graduates of her WKU class were making plans to strike out for New York City, Mackenzie decided to head to Los Angeles, a big, courageous step for a recent college graduate. She was a bit apprehensive, but with the full support and encouragement of her parents, she decided to head west. She said with a smile, “My parents kicked me out . . . in a great way! They said ‘you could always come home if you want!’” On June 23, 2013, with a new roommate found on Craig’s List and several websites for audition leads at her fingertips, Mackenzie dove into the LA experience with determination and enthusiasm. Her goal was to be able to support herself through acting work without having to work at something else. Her plan has worked! By the time her first year in LA rolled around, she had participated in 64 different film projects, all paid acting jobs. She has worked on many sets as an extra who, in her words, “Bring life to the scene. They [extras] make it believable.” She has also secured bit parts and appeared in commercials and music videos. “Every project has been a valuable experience for networking, learning the craft with different acting styles, and becoming knowledgeable about the hierarchy of the filmmaking process,” says Mackenzie, with maturity beyond her years. At the writing of this article, in mid-July, Mackenzie was spending a few relaxing days in Bowling Green with her family. Upon returning to LA, she is prepared to start interviews to secure an agent. By the time this article is published in October, this ambitious young woman will most assuredly have met that goal. When asked about how she has accomplished so much at this point, Mackenzie quickly answered, “I have the help of God and family . . . the best support there is!” By Belinda Saltzman

If you’re looking for the definition of a surprise of a man, you will find it in Wes Berry. Ask any Western Kentucky University student, and he or she will know him simply as Dr. Berry, an Associate Professor of English Literature. However, Berry doesn’t just spend his spare time grading papers. He is also well known as a passionate connoisseur of all kinds of food...especially barbecue. Wes grew up in Glasgow, Kentucky, where his mom cooked country homemade meals of all kinds. When he was in grade school, he was known as the kid who required a full trip to the grocery store just to fill his stomach for one meal. Since then, he’s traveled the world and widened his taste and knowledge of cooking methods. While he’s found that he enjoys cooking the foods of the Japanese and Chinese cultures, his roots have stayed in Kentucky. Wes has explored the many traditions of Kentucky cooking and has found that barbecue interests him the most. He recently published The Kentucky Barbecue

Sir-PRIZE...

Wes Berry

Wes Berry, professor, author, barbecue connoisseur Wes signs copies of his book KY BBQ

Book, which is compiled of research covering over 170 barbecue restaurants in the Commonwealth. Originally, Wes meant for the book to be a road map to the best barbecue places in Kentucky for visitors. Once he began his research, Wes realized that the real story was found in the people who owned these restaurants rather than the food itself. While he did love the more famous barbecue places, such as Moonlight in Owensboro, Wes found that his favorite restaurants were the “mom ‘n’ pop” shops about which rarely anyone knew. The Cookbook Digest describes Wes’ book as “a love letter to the landscapes, people, and rich barbecue traditions of the Commonwealth. Berry asserts that Kentucky’s barbecue is worthy of recognition and exploration.” Beyond barbecue, Wes and his wife have found a love for raising their own food and eating only off of their land. They own several acres of land, which are now proudly filled with a garden, pigs, rabbits, chickens, and lambs. When Wes is on summer break from being a professor, he spends his days in the sun, working on the land and with the animals. He also recently bought two Great Pyrenees puppies, which his wife and he plan to raise to guard their livestock. While Wes may still enjoy quiet days spent in his office reading over papers, his equivalent passion is found through food. His personality is both intelligent and earthly and is definitely a surprise--but a good one at that. By Allison Sawyers

During the holidays, many of us go into “survival mode.” When time is sparse and emotions are high, it is easy to “lose our cool” or “shut-down” emotionally. Most people know how important it is to take time for oneself when overly stressed. However, did you know that taking time to invest in relationships can also be beneficial? Fur Ball you ask….what is a Fur Ball? Is it a tiny tumbleweed of cat hair rolling around under the bed? Well, yes and no. In this case, it’s an actual Ball…a night when very generous men and women in the community dress in glamorous finery and dine and dance for a very worthy cause – the Bowling Green/Warren County Humane Society! In 2007, a fellow Board member challenged me to think of a big fundraiser for the Shelter. I did, and the first Fur Ball was born! It was held on a freezing cold night in January of 2008 at Bowling Green Country Club. The original Skip Bond and the Fugitives played, and Wayne Jenkins and Martha Simpson did the floral John & B onnie O’B arrangements that went with our black and rien white paw print theme. As a few limos rolled up and people stepped out in formal wear laughing and smiling, I knew we might have a winner! The mood was festive; the band was hot; champagne glasses overflowed, and everyone said it was just er what they needed to beat the post-Christmas doldrums! I had said ebbie Saly Tony & D that I would be thrilled if we raised $20,000. Well, we made $40,000 that first year, and we were off and running! After the first sold out year, we had to move to the Convention Center for room. Other than the Charity Ball, there is not another Ball in town that gives women a chance to dress up Mayor B as much as they want with glitz and glamour and to wrestle ruce Wil kerson & Kim their husbands into a tux! Don’t be misled, though; people come in everything from formal dress to jeans, and they all have a great time! We always have a silent auction and a live auction with wonderful items donated by the community and elsewhere to help raise money. Lorri Hare, the Director, opens the live auction with a heartfelt speech and video about our cats and dogs in the Shelter that’s sure to loosen pursestrings! Sponsorships are available from $5000 for a Good Boy Jane rough & b s n a H Sponsorship, a Purrfect Sponsorship for $2500, the Guard Dog at dy Dr. Ran $1000, and Catnip for $500! This year, the Fur Ball will be held on January 31, 2015, at the Sloan Convention Center. Last year, we raised $100,000 and are hoping to top that this year! We welcome auction items, business or individual sponsorships, and, of course, you! Every year since that first cold and blustery Fur Ball has sold out, so get your tickets early! Call the Adoption Center at Perry & M eredith T (270) 783-9551, or, better yet, go out there! You can get your tickets and adopt your new best hessen friend at the same time!

The 411 on Wine brought to You by Shenanigans Wine & Spirits By Casandra Spears

Hello fellow wine lovers! I would like to share an experience I had this past Spring at a barrel sampling of a particular French wine called Chateauneuf-du-Pape. At this tasting, I was given samples from many different vineyards in the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation before they were actually bottled. “Just What I’ve Always Wanted!”

There is nothing sweeter than early Christmas morning when presents are finally opened, writes Rachel Korowitz at communitysparknotes.com. Remember hunkering down on the floor with a promising present, tearing through the wrapping paper, and finding four pairs of pantyhose? Even if you don’t quite get what you want, a gift is a gift, meaning someone took the time and energy to think of you, pick out a present, and hope you would love it. While you might be upset that you didn’t get exactly what you wanted, you still need to act like a grownup and be polite, and here’s how: • Assume the best: Even the worst presents often have good intentions behind them. Give the giver the benefit of the doubt and remember that he or she was trying to do the right thing. Sample response: “This figurine is hilarious, Grandma! I can’t believe you remember how much I loved frogs when I was little!” • Be gracious but vague: Even if you hate the present, 14 • Flair • 2014 • October/November/December

How to Hide Your Disappointment When You Get a Bad Holiday Gift

you’re going to need to find something positive to say. Rather than picking out specifics, go for a general positive idea and be grateful. Sample response: “Oh, Aunt Sue, it’s a subscription to Gourmet magazine! I know I’m on Weight Watchers, but this present makes me feel so cultured!” • Think of one good way you can use the present: There’s got to be something redeemable about this gift. Stretch the limits of your imagination and sell it with your most charming smile. Sample response: “Thank you so much for the ecofriendly lightbulbs, Uncle Joe! I was just saying that I needed some of these to replace my old ones!” Keep a mental tally only of the horror. That way, you don’t risk having a paper or electronic trail, which could easily be discovered by snoop-prone relatives. When you see your friends for a holiday recap, make sure none of the offenders are in earshot and then let loose about the worst footie pajamas anyone has ever seen!

My grandmother started walking five miles a day when she was 60. She’s 97 now, and we don’t know where the hell she is! Baloney is just salami with an inferiority complex.

Nothing says holidays like a cheese log. I really don’t think I need buns of steel. I’d be happy with buns of cinnamon. 16 • Flair • 2014 • October/November/December

Take a nap in a fireplace, and you’ll sleep like a log.

Accept who you are, unless you’re a serial killer. One time I actually cleaned out my closet so well I ended up on the cover of Time magazine.

It’s also a time to count your blessings and share your gratitude with those you care about the most. Why Dress Up?

Have you ever wondered about the things we wear every day and why we wear them or what to do when people ask “why are YOU so dressed up?” (As if wearing something cute that makes you feel good is a “strange” thing to do!) What does dressing up mean? Since when did it become an unusual thing to put effort into what you wear and have fun with fashion? Since when is NOT wearing sweatpants and a hoodie breaking unwritten social rules? Why should dressing up be reserved for special occasions only? So why dress up? Here are a few reasons why...

Because nothing beats the rush you feel when you look in the mirror and LOVE what you see. Fashion is a method of self expression. What are you trying to say?

Because it’s FUN! Because you want to. That’s the only reason that matters! 22 • Flair • 2014 • October/November/December

Cute clothes and accessories are a great conversation starter. Wear something fabulous and people will ask you where you got it.

Because life’s too short to blend in. Don’t settle for average. You never know who you’ll run into Brad Pitt at the grocery store? Hey, stranger things have happened.

Glamour isn’t only for the rich and famous, even though they’d like you to believe it is. Because if you’ve got it (great style, killer confidence, amazing legs), it’s just wrong not to flaunt it!

Questhouse Is A Premier Recovery Provider

Stressful. Weird. Dangerous. Unusual adjectives to describe what traditionally is known as the most festive of seasons. But to millions of people in recovery from addiction to alcohol or other drugs, holiday stress can trigger relapse. Many more Americans face the anxiety of dealing with intoxicated loved ones during holiday get-togethers or with the uncertainty of how to act around someone in treatment and recovery. This is the right time of year to take the step and get healthy. For families besieged by addiction, the greatest gift they could give their addicted loved one — and themselves — is the gift of recovery.

Dear Sheila, I am going to be in an Autumn wedding that’s very formal, but don’t know what to wear to the rehearsal dinner! Are pants appropriate? ~Baffled Bridesmaid

Dear Sheila, I have heard that culottes are coming back! I always loved them, and have several pair stored away just in case. Should I be fashion forward and be the first to wear them again? Do you like them? Should I wear them with boots or tights? ~Trend Setter Dear Trend Setter, Oh honey, so many questions about such a simple garment. There is one reason that they went out of style…look in a mirror. Dear Sheila, The Holidays are coming! I’m so excited for all of them; the food, the decorations, but most of all…the clothing! I have all of these fabulous Holiday sweaters, vests, shirts, even elf shoes! Are there any rules on where the appropriate places to wear these are? I want to be in style! ~Holiday Hannah Dear Hannah, I would use discretion if I were you…perhaps a sweater once a week? You start to look like you’re in costume if you carry those themes too far in your outfits, and wear them every day! Also, there’s a reason the College kids have “Ugly Sweater Parties”!

Dear Sheila, I am having a problem with my Mother-in-law and Christmas gifts. She insists on giving my children terrible, outdated clothing for Christmas! Either that, or it’s some kind of elf outfit, turkey pajamas, Santa shirts….you get the idea! She wants to see them wear them to dinner or church, and my children are miserable! What can I tell her? ~Unhappy DIL Dear DIL, Oh honey, I’m having visions of Ralphie in the bunny outfit in A Christmas Story! Your kids will soon be too big to even find those horrible little outfits to fit them…I’d just ride it out. Makes for great photos & memories.

Want to ask Sheila a question? Write her at Shout Out To Sheila at 730 College St, Bowling Green, KY 42101.

Skin Loving Foods Have you effectively “winterized” your home for the season? Plunging temperatures call for more than just cozy sweaters, boots and coats—they can also challenge daily eating and wellness routines, which can negatively impact skin. A personal regimen that effectively combines a diet full of fresh, in-season foods, exercise, skincare and wellness this winter can be a powerful tool in achieving a glowing, healthy-looking appearance.

BUTTERNUT SQUASH Squash is one of winter’s most popular vegetables. Though winter squash is botanically classified as a fruit, it is nutritionally viewed as a starchy vegetable. Winter squash is filled with nutrients and is one of the top sources of beta carotene, an antioxidant form of vitamin A that helps protect skin and speeds up the cell renewal process, contributing to healthy, supple-looking skin. Beta carotene imparts a yelloworange color to food and can also enhance complexion tone. Butternut squash is readily available both whole and in convenient pre-cut packages and it has a creamy, sweet flavor that appeals to just about everyone.

BEETS Another highly underrated fall and winter vegetable is the beet. High in folate, manganese and potassium, beets can also be found in already-cooked vacuum packs, making it easier to add them to a meal. When buying fresh beets, select those with the greens intact because beet greens, like other green leafy vegetables, are not only delicious, they are also packed with nutrients, especially vitamin C, which is important for collagen production. Try sauteing cooked beets with the greens or some kale along with garlic and splash of balsamic vinegar. Or, whip up an elegant beet salad enhanced with watercress dressing by combining the watercress, goat cheese, buttermilk, vinegar and salt in a food processor until smooth and creamy, and add walnuts as a topper.

TEAS Daily routines can have long-term effects; so consider substituting your afternoon cup of joe with a more skinloving cup of tea. The white, green and black tea varieties are all from the same plant, and are packed with flavonoids and antioxidants, helping to detox cell-damaging free radicals in the body. White is the least processed of teas, followed by green and then black. All contain caffeine so they are perfect for an afternoon or morning pick-me-up, but they have considerably less than coffee so you will get a gentle lift rather than a big jolt.

WHOLE GRAINS Whole grains are a valuable part of a healthy diet, providing a wide spectrum of nutrients and antioxidants, not to mention great taste and satisfaction. They are digested more slowly than refined grains so they can help you achieve a steadier blood sugar, which may reduce inflammation and acne flares and lower the risk of heart disease, diabetes and other health issues. Quinoa has gained popularity recently, but other alternative grains like farro and bulgur are just as delicious and packed with fiber and minerals.

TOMATOES Tomatoes are a crucial “skin food.” They provide lycopene which helps protect skin against damage from UV radiation. Canned tomatoes and sauce make it easy to incorporate this fruit into everyday meals. Cooking tomatoes concentrates their lycopene, and adding olive oil in tomato sauce helps the body absorb the antioxidant.
