Recently my Mom purchased a large mirror at a Home Goods store in northern Kentucky. She was trying to wrestle it into the trunk of her car with no luck. A man in the parking lot saw what was happening and approached her offering his help. As it turned out, he needed tools and time to remove the packaging so it would fit. He spent about 15-20 minutes of his time to get the mirror situated. The next time I talked to my Mom she told me the story of this very kind stranger. She was so touched by his kindness. It made me realize that random acts of kindness are so infrequent that we are in awe when they occur. My son and daughter-in-law have a large, very cool sign that resides in their home that quotes Winnie-the-Pooh, “Be Kind or Leave.” The Dalai Lama said, “Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible.” As we enter this holiday season of hustle and bustle where we find much to do in a limited time, let’s all try to remember to honor the season by being kind. Be kind….it will do your heart good in ways that will leave you smiling for a very long time. Wishing you a happy holiday filled with kindness! — Belinda Saltzman

A MOTHER’S VERSION OF
“Twas the Night Before Christmas” — By Marissa Brown
Twas’ the night before Christmas and all through my abode, I was the only one stirring: I was cleaning the commode. Kids FINALLY all sleeping, of course in MY bed, with visions of Legos and bikes in their heads, while Daddy was snoozing, in front of the TV, with a half constructed bike propped up against his knee. When I heard the reindeer hooves all loud and a clatter, it made me all flustered, “Oh! NOW what’s the matter?” With the toilet bowl brush still tight in my hand, I came down the back stairs and saw the ole’ man. (Not my husband.) He was covered with ashes, cat hair, and some dust, which fell to my rug. “Oh, great! I could bust!” “Ho Ho Ho!” exclaimed Santa. “So glad you’re awake. Can’t tell you how hard your gift was to make.” “Oh, thanks,” I told Santa, “All I want is time alone.” “I get it,” he laughed, “so I made you a clone.” “A clone?” I questioned Santa. “Well, what good is that? Run along, you crazy Santa; I’ve got no time to chat.” Then out came my clone; she was my exact twin: same hair, same yoga pants, and even my double chin. “She’ll cook; she’ll clean; even take the kids to school. You’ll relax, paint your nails. Santa just ain’t no fool.”
“HECK, YEAH!” I exclaimed. “This doesn’t feel right. I can shower and read, even sleep though the night!” From my room up above, I heard the kids stirring. “Mommy, come quick! I’m scared, and I’m thirsty!” As my clone softly said, “I’ll be up in no time!” “Oh, yeah,” I said; then I opened the wine! My clone calmed my kids, put them right back to bed. This couldn’t be real, couldn’t get it through my head! “You’re the best mom ever,” I happened to hear. It just wasn’t right: her getting love from MY dears? So I excused Santa’s clone right out of my life, “That’s MY children’s love,” and she left without strife. As I kissed my sweet children and tucked them in bed. “Oh , thank you, sweet Santa, for clearing my head.” “Sometimes I get busy and know it flies by, but I know these days are special, and that’s the reason why, I’m choosing to parent and do the hard stuff, even when I am tired and I’ve had enough.” As the clock on my bookshelf began to chime, Santa whispered to my clone, “It works every time!” So as my clone and dear Santa wished me goodnight, he told me, “Merry Christmas, you dear Mom, you’re doing it right!” As parents we find daily that through our efforts to give our children “everything” we forget to give them the things that matter most…ourselves. This Christmas resist being taken by the excitement of what we think is important and remember the real reason we celebrate. Hold those who are important to you close. Merry blessed Christmas and Happy Holidays from my family to yours!
To be in your children’s memories tomorrow, you have to be in their lives today.

Michele Vise, Executive Director of New Beginnings Therapeutic Riding is passionate about her work. In fact, it provided a “new beginning”for her. Michele was born in Lexington, KY and grew up on a farm. She graduated from University of Kentucky in 1996 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science. Her career started in Franklin with a position at P.I.C. (Pig Improvement Company), which is a swine genetics facility. In 2004, she became the Director of Member Relations for the National Institute for Animal Agriculture. In 2007 she was promoted to CEO of this organization. All seemed to be going well until life threw her a couple of curve balls in 2008. First, she lost her husband to a genetic degenerative disease. Then the non-profit she worked for merged with another nonprofit in Colorado. Michele found herself at a major crossroads in her life. After a lot of soul-searching, Michele decided to stay in Kentucky close to her Lexington relatives. She became a volunteer at New Beginnings, which at that time was located a mere 10 minutes from her home in the Plano area. She helped with exercising horses, helping riders, writing grant proposals, marketing & publicity and fund raising. As a result of her efforts, programs were expanded. In 2009, Michele became a parttime paid employee and in the winter 2012 she was named Executive Director. In 2013, New Beginnings found a new home on Bill Ferguson Road in Warren County. The picturesque setting and beautiful barn area is reminiscent of a Lexington horse farm. The facility allows for 40 weeks of classes and riding and to date has served over 800 students and over 10,000 volunteer hours! Therapeutic riding provides a recreational outlet that has therapeutic benefits for individuals with disabilities through the power of horses. 6 • Flair • 2015 • October/November/December

relate to horseback riding. Michele says, “The horse has the innate ability to know that the rider is disabled!” When asked what New Beginnings means to her personally, Michele replied, “NBTR allows me to share my passion for horses with those who have disabilities. I was fortunate to share this experience with my mother (an avid rider when she was younger) who thought she would never ride again because of her neurological disease. She rode at NBTR until her passing February 2015. The love and bond they have with a 1000 pound animal is breath taking.” Michele also volunteers for 4-H and serves on the Warren County 4-H Council and District 4-H Council. She is a member of Warren Co. Agriculture Foundation and she works part-time at Kentucky Downs.

As we approach the holidays we begin to think of the hustle and bustle of the shopping
season. While it can be a joyous time, there are many things and people that can turn the festivities into a nightmare for you and your family. Criminals are lazy. They can make more money in a few minutes stealing from you than a full day of legitimate employment. This is also the time when you are away from home. In this article, we are providing some tools to Refuse to be a Victim as you navigate through the season. • Keep tight control of your account and credit card information; • Consider wallets with RFID (Radio-Frequency Idenfication) blockers. RFID is a device used to wirelessly transfer magnetic data from your credit or debit cards by simply walking close to you; • Carry a “to go” wallet that has only what you will need to shop. • Small purses to be worn cross body offer the greatest security; some even come with straps that have braided steel cables in them to prevent someone cutting it as they walk by you; • Open purses are an invitation for theft of wallets and other items inside; shopping carts are a prime spot for theft; • Men should carry their wallets or cash in their front pocket. Also, a heavy rubber band around the wallet before putting it in your pocket will make it harder for thieves to slip it out; • When approaching your car, always be aware of your surroundings; • When using keyless entry only press the unlock button once. Working properly, it should only open the driver side door. This will prevent someone from entering from the other side or the back; • While returning a shopping cart, take a few seconds to hit the keyless entry to lock the doors. That simple task can save you hours of work dealing with the theft of your purse or valuables. Also remember, carjackings happen; • While walking, always keep one hand free and never carry a lot of packages at a time; • Pay attention to everything going on around you. That cell phone call or thinking of what you are planning for dinner could compromise your safety; • Keep all valuables out of sight; they are just too tempting for thieves; • At home, never place gifts where they can be seen from outside;
— By Deborah Williams
• When you are going to be away from home, remember, just as in vacation season, never discuss your plans on social media or in general conversations that can be overheard; also, caution your children about discussing plans;
• Just a reminder, while you are pumping gas, keep your purse in the back floorboard on the side you pump the gas. That offers the best control; • Always be aware while dining out. Purses left at the table while visiting the salad bar are too tempting for some. Remember these tips for a safe and happy holiday season!!!

Tori Henninger A Communicator with a Critically Important Message DOMESTIC VIOLENCE … a topic we don’t like to talk about or even think about. But we must. Tori Henninger, Executive Director of BRASS (Barren River Area Safe Space), sums it up, “We need to open lines of communication about domestic violence in our community. It is a societal issue that can happen to ANYONE and effects EVERYONE.” Tori is from the very small town of Burgin, Kentucky, about 30 miles south of Lexington. She came to Bowling Green as a Western Kentucky University student where she graduated with a BA and then a MA in Communication in 2009. Tori worked with the Alumni Association as a WKU student, and then the association hired her after graduation where she worked for 10 years. She was not looking for a new career opportunity, but, as fate would have it, one came looking for her. She saw a posting for the BRASS Executive Director. It wouldn’t leave her alone. It kept cropping up, she kept hearing about it, thinking about it. Tori has a strong faith, and she started to feel as if she were being led to make a change. She applied for the position and was hired as the new director (replacing the retiring Lee Alcott) in July of this year. Tori explains that she quickly dived into learning all the aspects that are involved in this critically important agency. “I was very lucky that BRASS has the best staff in the world! The 21 staff members and several volunteers are well trained and totally dedicated to providing a safe place for women and their children to remove them from a domestic violence situation.” Tori’s mission is to build awareness about domestic violence and BRASS. How does the process work? When a victim calls the crisis line, it is determined if they are in eminent danger; the victim and children then come to the emergency shelter (83 women and children were served in July, 2015, in the 28-bed shelter). Male victims are offered alternative arrangements. Next, an initial assessment is conducted to determine the barriers to safety, and a BRASS advocate helps devise a plan and educates about what resources are available. Permanent housing is arranged if possible or rapid re-housing is available as a short term option to help victims get back on their feet. Outreach services are utilized that include group and individual counseling. BRASS is one of 15 agencies that comprise KCADV, Kentucky Coalition Against Domestic Violence. It is funded by donations and multiple grants provided by various sources. When asked about volunteer opportunities, Tori responded, “The list is endless. If you have some time, there is a need that will fit your skill set!” Training is mandatory for some of the volunteer positions. BRASS also works in partnership with Goodwill. You can designate that your Goodwill donations go to BRASS, and women will get vouchers to purchase items for setting up their new housing.

Forget about Valentine’s Day...
Halloween is the BEST time of year to be coupled up
Couples’costumes are often outrageous, funny, and very creative. Costumes for couples really have no limits and can be as far out there as you would like. Especially if you have a completely unique costume idea for you and your special someone, the idea you have in mind is often not available in Halloween stores, so many resort to creating their own original costumes from scratch. So what ideas do you have for this Halloween?

I still sing because I love the sound of applause, because it’s who I am, and because I still can. Whatever happened to the tomboy I used to be, the slightly rebellious rocker? I’ve spent an awful lot of my time in the air. I’ve had everything happen to me in a plane that could happen, except a crash. The amazing thing is that I’m sane. I’m not bitter. I’m not drugged out. I’m not broke. I’m still married to the same guy. My children don’t hate me. I wasn’t aware of it at the time, but I was a big favorite with the Mafia. I’m not used to introspection. I’ve never lingered on my feelings. The show must go on. 20 • Flair • 2015 • October/November/December

HERE’S WHAT WOMEN REALLY WANT FOR CHRISTMAS -
Something That Makes Her Feel Like You Think. . . . . . She’s incredibly beautiful. Maybe it’s jewelry or a scarf: just something that says, “I love looking at you.”
Ladies, what do YOU really want
for Christmas from your man? If you can’t tell him directly or just want to be surprised, leave this article for him to read — and happy shopping gentlemen!
. . . She’s incredibly smart.
Maybe it’s a first edition copy of The Catcher in the Rye: this gift should say, “I value your intellect.”
. . . She’s incredibly funny.
Maybe it’s a silly tee-shirt: something that says, “You make me laugh.”
. . . She’s a good mom.
Maybe it’s a bracelet with a charm for each child or a framed family portrait.
. . . She’s deserving of a break. Maybe it’s a day at the spa or a personal chef for a week.
Not to make a sweeping generalization, but most men aren’t great at buying women Christmas presents, although some seem to get into the whole process of searching for the perfect gift for their wives or girlfriends. However, many men are the type who spend the last couple of days before Christmas wandering around the mall in a daze, staring with panicked confusion at anything sparkly, pink, or fruity-smelling: “Does that look like something she would want? She’ll probably be weird, distant, irritable, and sad for at least a week or two, until she convinces herself you’ll redeem yourself on Valentine’s Day. Here’s the good news...this year, you can avoid this common holiday couples’ conflict!

RISING STAR! Brent Rupard grew up in Shepherdsville, Kentucky, 30 miles from Louisville. Music played an important role in Brent’s family. His dad was the worship leader at their church and played guitar. His mom plays piano and both his sisters love singing. When he was 10 years old, Brent took the family musical influence and started developing his own musical interest and talent with the drums and then guitar. A tragic event in his young life led Brent Brent and friend Anthony Olympia to write his first song when he was 14. He was able to perform at the 2015 CMA Festival. express his feeling through songwriting when a close friend died. By the time he was in high school, Brent was in a Christian based band that had regular gigs at church events and youth activities. He wanted to pursue his music, but he also knew that getting a college degree was very important. 2003 brought the rising star to WKU where he stayed very busy in his spare time performing in an acoustic duo with friend and fellow musician, Anthony Olympia. The duo was billed as Easy Street. Brent describes the music industry as a large family. “If you have consistent exposure, with talent and a little luck, you end up being noticed.” Brent was noticed by Lee Ann Phelan, an ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors & Publishers) representative. Lee Ann was an early believer and supporter of Brent, setting up meetings for him and arranging for him to participate in an ASCAP workshop for unsigned songwriters. Professional songwriter Bonnie Baker led the workshop. Through the workshop, Brent was nominated for and won the prestigious Leon Butler Award in 2011. His association with Bonnie Baker and Lee Ann Phelan led to his being signed as a songwriter for Sea Gayle Music (a publishing company owned by Brad Paisley and Chris Dubois) and being signed by his booking agency, William Morris. Brent just finished cutting a record and will begin the process of finding the right label for his music. His music genre is organic country, gritty soul with an Americana vibe. When asked about artists who have had an impact on him, Brent answered, “George Jones, Buck Owens, The Eagles, Merle Haggard, Tom Petty, Garth Brooks, Elton John, Brent’s fans come in all ages, and, currently The Band with Levon Helm.” including one of his biggest, Brent’s Christian values shine through like 8-year-old Keegan McLaughlin. a beacon. When asked where he sees himself in 10 years, he thoughtfully answered, “Continuing to work hard and be inspired, having a good balance of career and personal life, staying grounded and true to my music, making music that inspires and touches people, and continuing to grow in my faith which has been a catalyst in my life.” He has opened for The Band Perry, Montgomery Gentry, Josh Turner, Kenny Loggins, and Scotty McCreery to name a few. In May of this year, Brent opened for Thompson Square at SkyPAC here in Bowling Green and is now touring with the country band Lonestar. Find out more about Brent and his music at www.brentrupardmusic.com Brent and Anthony always pumped for the next concert.
