Publisher’s Prattle Halloween is my favorite holiday, but, as I always say, “It’s not just a holiday: it’s a way of life.” Halloween is a whole season, not just one night. The average person celebrates this holiday on October 31, but it deserves much more recognition, so I break out those faux spider webs, skulls, witches, zombies, and more as soon as the temperature dips to 80 degrees. Halloween is one time you can really go over the top—the creepier the better! I love decorating both the inside and the outside of my house. In fact, I spend all year brainstorming for the next Halloween. Halloween is about conquering your fears. It’s breathing a sigh of relief at the end of a horror movie and walking out of the haunted house safe and sound. We can look the Grim Reaper in the eye and tell him we’ve got some partying to do.

The tour was interesting, informative and fun. Kara and Kenneth Glenn worked diligently to bring a fantastic presentation to Bowling Green.

is a time to celebrate ghosts, vampires, and everything supernatural, but if you truly believe in ghosts, you’re not alone. Luckily, we live in Bowling Green — a city with tons of historic sites and an eerie history. I decided to do a little research and contacted Kara Williams Glenn, founder of UNSEEN Bowling Green. Kara’s love of history took her through the Bowling Green plaque tour in 2013. After the tour, she and her husband, Kenn, sat down to dinner, and she told him the “dark side” needed to be told. It was then and there she said, “Next year, we’re giving tours.” Kara went from business to business in downtown Bowling Green seeking out haunted happenings from business owners. Some said, “Go away,” We loved while others said, “Let me tell you what listening to Kara happened!” From there, Kara took the stories tell her stories! She is and researched the happenings. In October 2015, UNSEEN Bowling Green very fact based and began giving HAUNTED HISTORY Walking has done her Tours. These tours guide your family on a homework. ghostly adventure you never knew existed in Bowling Green’s historic downtown. Bowling Green just happens to be one of Kentucky’s most haunted cities. UNSEEN Bowling Green allows you to experience authentic ghost hunting, and the tour will disclose histories, mysteries, scandals, and haunts rooted around Fountain Square Park. Each tour will visit haunted and historic locations, an eerie cemetery, and will enter a secret haunted location that has been closed to the public for nearly 100 years. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • “Success is waking up and doing what you love every day, whether it be as a stay-at-home mom or a CEO.” These are the wise words of the SOKY Jobs founder and CEO, Christina Dawson, and there’s no doubt that she is doing what she truly loves. A Bowling Green native with a hardworking attitude and sunny demeanor, Christina is well versed in the sales and business world. She started in sales and went on to be an executive assistant, a director of marketing and public relations, and then eventually opened her own employment business. “I’m addicted to being an entrepreneur,” says Christina with a smile and laugh. Being a nontraditional student, Christina always knew she wasn’t meant to be boxed in to the standard classroom experience. “I never excelled sitting in the classroom. I always wanted to be out doing something,” says Christina. She’s been ‘doing something’ since she was eighteen, and there’s no stopping her now. After spending quite a bit of time hiring others, she says that something suddenly clicked in her mind, and the rest is history.
“I asked myself why wouldn’t someone want to hire me? And that was really the beginning of SOKY Jobs,” Christina says. It started as a website and has grown since. “I was constantly asked where is the best place to look for a job? So, I guess I found my market that way and created more than a website,” says Christina about the start of her business. “It’s more of a platform.” Becoming an entrepreneur is no easy feat, which Christina learned the hard way by taking absolutely no days off and starting off with absolutely no capital. However, despite all the hard work and all the moments where the ‘what-am-I-doing question’ pops in her head, Christina can’t imagine doing anything else with her time. “Starting my own business made me break out of my box and helped me realize that I have some pretty great ideas,” says Christina with a deserving smile. So if you need a job, or just want to pick Christina’s brain for advice (something I plan on doing), then head over to SOKY Jobs. You might even find your passion, as Christina found hers.

A Glimpse into Her Life as a Military Wife
by Belinda Saltzman
Jennifer Saltzman is a daughter, a sister, a mother, a teacher, and the wife of an Air Force Brigadier General. Her story starts in Bowling Green. Born and raised here, she is a BGHS graduate, attended WKU where she was a Kappa Delta, then transferred after her junior year to the College of Great Falls in Montana where she graduated with an Elementary Education degree. In September of 1992, Jennifer married Chance Saltzman, a 2nd Lt. in the Air Force. She knew nothing about military life, or, as she points out, “Nor did I know anything about being married for that matter. At 21 years old, everything was new to me.” When asked to describe her first few weeks of life as a military wife, Jennifer recalled, “The day after our marriage weekend ended, we flew to Montana where Chance was stationed. I didn’t know anyone when I got there. The day after we got to Montana, Chance went on alert for his job as a missileer. That means he was gone for 24 hours at work. That cycle repeated every three days for the first month and beyond. That was overwhelming and a bit lonely being in a new place where your husband is away from the house about half the time. So I got a job to have something to do, and we made friends with other young Air Force people, friends that we are still very close with to this day.” Since the assignment in Montana, where son John was born in 1995, the family moved to 10 different places in 24 years! In 1997, they moved to Alexandria, Virginia, when Chance was stationed at the on John s Pentagon. Daughter & r e if Jenn Sarah was born there. After that, they loaded up and moved all the way cross country to Sunnyvale, California. Jennifer remembers, “I loved California and was able to teach at the kids’ preschool. From there we moved to Las Vegas, Nevada. I cried the whole way there thinking the kids were going to be exposed to the ‘colorful’ Las Vegas environment, perhaps too much for a 3 and 5 year old to handle. But it turned out to be one of my favorite assignments. Always lots of family visiting and always something cool to do. I also got to coach my kids’ soccer teams!” In 2003, the family moved to Prattville, Alabama. They enjoyed being back in the South where their kids learned how to speak with a Southern drawl. After 2 years there, they headed back to California to Vandenberg Air Force Base. Although they lived in the smallest house ever on Jennifer & the base, which was built in the 1940’s, it turned out to be
The Saltzman Family: John, Jennifer, Chance & Sarah a favorite assignment. There were always kids running in and out of the house and playing in the neighborhood until the sun went down. After sunny California, the family headed north east to Watertown, Massachusetts, just outside Boston: great city, Red Sox games, BU hockey, and great sightseeing! Then it was back to Virginia and the Pentagon. After only 1 year, the family headed to Colorado where they got to stay for 6 years! The most current move brought the family back to Virginia for a 3rd tour at the Pentagon where Chance was promoted to Brigadier General. This was their first assignment without the kids as they now both attend the University of Missouri. When asked to reflect on the hardships of military family life, Jennifer responded, “Moving! Having to start new schools, getting into sports teams, and new dentists (Sarah & John had 3 different orthodontists, and we rarely saw the same Doctor more than once). In one Jenni stretch, our kids were in 4 fer & different grades in 4 different daugh ter Sa states in 4 different years!” rah As far as the blessings of military life, Jennifer says, “A girl from Kentucky has gotten to live all over our country. Every drive across the country always came with new sights, sounds, and adventures. Our kids have a worldly perspective and the ability to fit in and adapt in ways that I never could have when I was 18.” The role of a General’s wife has changed since the old days. Jennifer explains, “I can make my role whatever I want it to be. There are tons of volunteer opportunities, many social events and activities, and I can, for the most part, pick and choose how I want to be involved. But, we are asked to represent the Air Force at events, so the Air Force sent both of us to a weeklong seminar where we learned all about this role.” When asked what’s next in your military life, Jennifer speculated, “Only the military knows. If you’ve heard any good rumors, Chance be sure to let me know!”

Sandy Boussard:
How to live life actively at EVERY age! — by Carly Mathews
What do politics and exercise have to do with each other? Well, just ask Sandy Boussard, former mayor turned owner of Live Active Fitness. Sandy, a Bowling Green native, has found an amazing way to help mature adults reach their fitness goals. Live Action Fitness is a facility especially tailored to the older population of Bowling Green, with classes for all levels and machines tailored to the special needs of her members. Sandy credits her work within her church for giving her the idea for the facility. “I was working in the senior adult ministry, and through that I was able to see what their needs were and able to continue my passion of helping others,” says Sandy. Throughout her life, Sandy has been passionate about helping others, which was most of the reason she got started in politics. “I never viewed it as politics. I viewed it as a public service I was blessed to provide,” says Sandy about her time as mayor. As far as Live Action Fitness goes, Sandy seems to view it in the same way. She views her work as a way to not only help her friends and clients become healthier, but also as a way to help their families and help their spiritual health. “They’re healthier, which is not only good for them and their families, but it also allows them to be able to serve the Lord for a longer time,” says Sandy about the impact senior exercise can hold. The environment within the faith-based facility is infectious, as are the smiles that surround you wherever you walk. Those smiles are the reason that Sandy does what she does and what makes her job so special to her. “The greatest impact to me is seeing everyone’s smiles,” says Sandy, smiling herself. “I would do this for free if there wasn’t rent to pay.”
“Aging is not lost youth but a new stage of opportunity and strength.”

South Central Bank salutes women in business, education and leadership in 2016.
South Central Bank Salutes:
• Melissa has been practicing medicine in Glasgow for more than two decades • Education: Graduate of Allen County Scottsville High School; graduate of WKU, where she majored in chemistry and minored in biology and math; the University of Louisville School of Medicine. Residency in pediatrics at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio • Family: Husband, Dr. Ken Dennison Children: Ben, Barrett, and Blair Dr. Dennison did a stint as a candy striper while she was a high school student—an experience that helped point her down her career path. She began her freshman year at WKU on the pre-med path. Medical students do rotations through a variety of specialties while they are in school to help them determine what type of medicine they will practice. “The pediatricians were the nicest people,” Melissa said. “They were the family-oriented people, and they were more like I wanted to be, or thought I wanted to be.” After three decades in medicine, Melissa now serves many “grand-patients.” “A lot of my patients have had children, so now I’m a ‘grand-pediatrician,” she said. “That’s the best part of being in medicine.” She sees many of her patients long after they are little kids. One of the biggest changes Melissa has seen during her career is the increase in the number of vaccines. “I am an old enough doctor that I have had a patient die of the chicken pox,” she said. “Vaccines have saved so many lives. And now there’s a huge movement of people who don’t vaccinate.” She was also one of the first doctors in the area to embrace computers and paperless charts. The patients have also changed over the years. “Now, many patients try to self-diagnose,” Melissa said. Also, when she first began practicing, her sample closets were filled with antibiotics. Now, she carries brochures for medication on attention deficit disorder, as many children face behavioral issues.

Though Melissa works full-time, she was able to find a balance with raising her three children. “I think the key is you choose what you do, and you let somebody else do the things that aren’t that important for you to do,” Melissa said. “I was the only one who could be a pediatrician, and I was the only one who could be a mother to my children.”

— by Celeste N. Rehmel Going home for the holidays has been a tradition for many families during the Christmas season, whether that includes driving hours out of state to see grandparents or staying at home while everyone comes to you. Spending time with family and friends is the biggest part of the holiday season for many, but unfortunately, not everyone has this opportunity. Luckily, the people at Rockfield United Methodist Church in Bowling Green, Kentucky, realized that not everyone has the ability to go home for the holidays, so they made them a second home — if only for one day of the year. In 2003, they organized a Christmas Meal for anyone who was lonely on Christmas Day, which they hosted at Chaney’s Dairy Barn. Every year since then, a group of volunteers from Rockfield has cooked, prepared, and organized a Christmas Meal with the average attendance of 125-150 per year, not including the 100 or more meals they deliver as far as Glasgow to people who cannot make it out to the meal. Debra Chaney, owner of Chaney’s Dairy Barn and a church volunteer herself, stated, “We have a lot of warmth, a lot of love,” referring to the church and their many volunteers who are so dedicated to give up their own Christmas Day to help so many people have a comfortable holiday surrounded by people who truly care about them. Hundreds of people, including people with no family, people with no
way to get to their families, and even law enforcement officers and firefighters who are unable to get home for Christmas Dinner, have been blessed by this warmth and love. Debra went on to say her favorite part of helping with this annual meal was “heartfelt thank you’s and stories of why they are there.” The meal is now hosted in Rockfield’s very own fellowship hall, but the program has remained essentially the same: the same ham, turkey, sweet potatoes, rolls, and apples are served, completing a “really good holiday meal.” The same mission is being fulfilled, also: to give people who cannot, for whatever reason, spend Christmas with their families a place to eat and enjoy good company.
The heart that gives, gathers. —Tao Te Ching

Lavish Holiday Loins, Asparagus & Potatoes
Featuring Stuarto’s Line of Olive Oils, Balsamics & Spices Lavish Holiday Loins (2 Recipe Choices)
Nothing can beat the perfect recipe! In this series, Justin shares with you some of his favorite recipes to use with your Stuarto’s olive oils, balsamic vinegars, sea salts, spices and cane sugars.
#1 Lavishly Herbaceous
#2 Lavishly Sweet & Spicy
• 1.5-2 lbs. Pork Tenderloin • 1 tsp. Stuarto’s Applewood Smoked Pepper • 1 tsp. Stuarto’s Spanish Rosemary Sea Salt • 1 tsp. Stuarto’s House Blend • ¾ tsp. Stuarto’s Alderwood Smoked Sea Salt • 2 tsp. Dry Oregano • ¾ tsp. Mustard Powder • 2 Tbsp. Stuarto’s Wild Mushroom & Sage EVOO • 2 Tbsp. Stuarto’s Oregano Balsamic
• 1.5-2 lbs. Pork Tenderloin • 2 tsp. Stuarto’s Cinnamon Cane Sugar • 1 tsp. Stuarto’s Toasted Onion Sea Salt • ¾ tsp. Stuarto’s Vanilla Bean Cane Sugar • 1 Tbsp. Dark Brown Sugar • ¾ tsp. Chipotle Chili Powder • ½ tsp. Ground Ginger • 2 Tbsp. Stuarto’s Chipotle EVOO • 2 Tbsp. Stuarto’s Vanilla Balsamic
After choosing the flavor of your choice, blend dry ingredients into a dry rub. Coat the pork loin thoroughly with dry rub, massaging the blend into the meat. When pork loin is coated, drizzle it with the combination of Stuarto’s EVOO & Balsamic Vinegar. Place the pork in a covered dish to rest and marinate overnight in the refrigerator. When ready to cook, preheat oven to 425˚. Cook uncovered 25-30 minutes or until the internal temperature reads 145˚. After removing the loin from the oven, allow it to rest for 10 minutes before slicing. Voila! Top with Stuarto’s Denissimo Balsamico for DID an added touch of flavor and FLAIR!
Bacon-Wrapped Asparagus
• 1.5-2 lbs. Asparagus • 1 lb. Sliced Bacon (Applewood Smoked or your favorite flavor) • 3 Tbsp. Stuarto’s Tuscan Herb EVOO • 2 Tbsp. Stuarto’s Sicilian Lemon Balsamic • 1.5 Tbsp. Stuarto’s Olive Oil’s Best Friend Herb Blend • 2 tsp. Stuarto’s Applewood Smoked Pepper Preheat oven to 400˚, however, if cooking with the pork loin, 425˚ is fine, just don’t overcook the bacon. Wash/trim the bottoms of the asparagus. Cut bacon slices in half. Wrap each piece of asparagus with a half slice of bacon, covering as much of the asparagus as possible. Place the wrapped bacon on a baking sheet lined with foil or parchment paper, or an oven-safe baking rack if you have one (be certain to place it over a baking sheet to catch fat drippings). Sprinkle asparagus with the dry seasoning and drizzle with the EVOO and Balsamic. Cook for 20-25 minutes, or to your liking of crispness of bacon. Remove from pan/rack and allow to rest for 5 minutes before serving. For additional flavor, I like to serve my bacon-wrapped asparagus with a drizzle of Stuarto’s Black Mission Fig Balsamic. 14 • Flair • 2016 • October/November/December

Truffled Garlic Mashed Potatoes • 2 lbs. Golden Potatoes (skins on) • 3 Tbsp. Stuarto’s Butter EVOO • 2 Tbsp. Stuarto’s White Truffle EVOO
• 1.5 Tbsp. Stuarto’s House Blend Seasoning • 1 tsp. Stuarto’s White Truffle Sea Salt
Wash and cut potatoes into cubes, leaving skin on to give more texture. Bring a pot of water to a rapid boil and add cubed potatoes. Boil potatoes for 15-20 minutes, or until soft. Strain water from the potatoes. While the potatoes are piping hot, add the EVOO’s and dry ingredients. Use a hand mixer or potato masher to mash and blend well. Top with a tiny drizzle of Stuarto’s White Truffle Oil and a pinch of Stuarto’s Applewood Smoked Pepper. Enjoy!
YOU KNOW?
You’re likely already using olive oil on your salads and in your cooking - but did you know that it also has health benefits that could lead to a longer life? Olive oil helps in the prevention of heart disease, stroke and dementia, as well as cancers of the breast, respiratory tract and upper digestive tract. Research shows it may have the potential to lower the risk for osteoporosis and diabetes, too.
Cara Cara Manhattan • 2 oz. Kentucky Bourbon • ½ oz. Dry Vermouth
I enjoy making this cocktail with a rye bourbon; however, any fine Kentucky Bourbon will work perfect.
• 1.5 oz. Stuarto’s Cara-Cara Orange Vanilla Balsamic • 3-4 dashes of Angostura Bitters • Garnish: Rosemary, Maraschino Cherry, and Orange Peel
Fill shaker half-full of ice. Pour in Bourbon, Vermouth, Balsamic, and Bitters. Shake well, strain into a martini glass, garnish and serve. For garnishing, skewer an orange peel and maraschino cherry onto rosemary. The rosemary gives a complimentary aromatic sensation while sipping this cocktail. If you really enjoy rosemary, shake some up with your cocktail; just be certain to strain your drink well! When you enjoy your first, have another for me! Yum!
Bowling Green folks and neighbors, visit Stuarto’s in Buckhead Square - 760 Campbell Lane (270-904-5948) - Tuesday thru Sunday, and let Blake and the staff help you with what you need for these recipes! Much peace & many dishes! — Justin Cline

Dear Gabby, I just watched a TV show on how to train and talk to your dog. However, when I tried it, my dog still acted dumb. What do you think about that? — Signed, Dog Whisperer Dear Dog Whisperer, I think it proves the theory that dogs DO take on the characteristics of their owners. — Gabby
Dear Gabby, The world has become so dangerous. I am thinking of getting a Concealed Weapons license. Have any thoughts about this? — Signed, Annie Oakley Dear Annie Oakley, The idea that someone would grant YOU a license to carry a gun only proves how dangerous the world is. You need to leave your weapons at home. — Gabby
Dear Gabby, I was thinking that in addition to cooking turkey for Thanksgiving, I would also cook ham. What do you think about that idea? — Signed, Paula Deen Wannabe Dear PDW, I think if your obnoxious and loud brother is coming, you will have all the ham anyone can handle. — Gabby
Dear Gabby, I went to an office Christmas party, but nobody talked to me! Should I feel hurt? — Signed, Left Out Loser Dear LOL, No, you should stop going to office parties of places where you do not work. Those people have never seen you before. — Gabby Flair • 2016 • October/November/December • 17
New York is considered “the city that never sleeps,” but I didn’t know the extent of that statement until I experienced it for myself. Growing up in Kentucky, I had never before experienced that many bright lights next to the vast night sky. I had never realized how utterly distracting they were at three o’clock in the morning on Thanksgiving Day, 2014. I stood with 180 fellow marching band members in front of Macy’s Department Store that early morning, rehearsing for the famous Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade that would begin just hours later. The dark, early-morning sky hardly mattered to the Paul Laurence Dunbar Marching Band from Lexington, Kentucky. The storefronts lit the street overwhelmingly, not to mention
the lights NBC had set up for their filming equipment. Our excitement, too, helped us ignore our lack of sleep the previous night as the NBC director instructed us on when to march onto the legendary Macy’s star. Those next few hours flew by, filled with the earliest breakfast I ever had, a quick and restless nap, getting back into uniform, and lining up on the parade route. It wasn’t until all of us were standing on Central Park West, watching all the gigantic balloons rise into the sky and Joe Jonas feature us in the background of his snapchat story, that it really hit me. We were going to be in a parade seen by over 50 million people all over the world. Not only that, but we were all going to be able to experience this performance of a lifetime together, unifying and doing what we all love: making music. The entire previous five months, there had been a huge focus on unity: play together, march together, eat together, and run laps together. Marching band is centered around unity. A common motto was “We are only as strong as our weakest link,” and because of our season of rehearsals, performances, and friendships, all our links were equally strong. We had just wrapped up an exhilarating competitive marching season less than a month earlier, filled with successes that didn’t always equate to wins, but we accomplished feats we couldn’t have even imagined. So standing there in the center of all the chaos of parade prep, surrounded by balloons, floats, and my closest friends, it was a better end to my senior year marching season than I could have ever asked for. After marching, playing, and almost tripping over photographers crouching on the ground for a little over two miles, we reached the Macy’s star, the same place we had begun our very early morning, one last time. Playing the first notes of our tune, I couldn’t help but smile as it began to snow.

Even the cook should get to enjoy a stress-free Thanksgiving, so if you’re hosting this year’s holiday festivities, follow these 10 tips to help take the stress out of getting ready to prepare a Thanksgiving meal.
1
MAKE A PLAN
2
ORGANIZE
Poor planning is probably the greatest stressor when you’re trying to execute a large meal, particularly Thanksgiving dinner. If you want your holiday meal to run smoothly, you must plan the event carefully in advance.
Make lists of everything you need to keep organized (ingredients, dishes, kitchen gadgets and accessories, guests, tablescapes, and activities). Once you know exactly what you’ll need, you can round up the items and organize them.
3
KEEP A GENERAL HEAD COUNT
4
CAREFULLY DETERMINE YOUR MENU
Crowds tend to be ever-changing, especially around holidays, so it’s up to you to keep an accurate head count as you move forward. Expect some changes on your guest list, just always err on the side of too much food rather than too little.
It’s easy to get excited about a holiday meal and go overboard with your menu. Think carefully about everything you must do to create each dish. Plan to have a few items that are more difficult and a few items that are quick and easy.
5
PREPARE SOME ITEMS IN ADVANCE
A vital trick when cooking for a crowd is preparing as many items in advance as you can. The more items you can prepare in advance, the easier the big day will be.
6
DON’T BE AFRAID TO BORROW
Just because you’re the host of a holiday dinner doesn’t mean you should have all the pots, pans, dishes, and supplies on hand. When you cook for a crowd, borrowing items is perfectly fine.
7
CREATE A WORKFLOW
A workflow will help you manage your tasks and ensure that everything gets done.
8
EAT WELL, EXERCISE, AND SLEEP WELL
As you’re getting ready for Thanksgiving, try to keep the same schedule. Eat the same kind of foods you normally do, get some exercise, and go to bed and get up at the same times as usual. If you keep your body in sync, you’ll keep a level head on your shoulders.
9
TAKE A BREATHER
Build some downtime into your Thanksgiving day. Your mind and body work better if they both can take a break, so don’t feel guilty if you put your feet up, watch a parade, or read an article for 15 minutes. You’ll feel refreshed.
10
ASK FOR HELP
The trick is knowing when you need help. As Thanksgiving day nears, be realistic. If you simply have too much to do, make some phone calls and get extra help. Your goal is to have a fun, successful Thanksgiving Day.
