Here’s an idea to think about: To stay mentally sharp, sustained effort is key. It takes work to keep a complicated organ such as your brain in optimum condition. Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be complicated. You can follow these five simple steps to keep your mind bright:
1. Change. By the time you reach retirement age, your brain has mastered many

tasks. You have to think of creative ways to surprise it. So change is vital to brain health. Change your routines, change your environment, make new friends, have different conversations, listen to different music, try new foods. List the most familiar things in your life and then change them. Think. Don’t let your brain get bored. Stimulate it with lots of new, refreshing information. Read articles, visit museums, study a new topic or take up a new hobby. That awkward feeling you may remember from your first day on the job is what you want to replicate. Try learning a foreign language or a musical instrument. Move. Experts agree that aerobic exercise has the greatest benefit in terms of helping your brain stay young. Encourage important blood flow to the brain by doing at least 21⁄2 hours of moderate aerobic activity (brisk walking) each week. Start where you can and gradually build up from there. Setting small, monthly goals keeps your efforts focused and on track. Eat smart. Keep those arteries—in your heart and your brain—from getting clogged with fat by eating plenty of fruits, veggies and whole grains. Stick with healthy fats such as those in nuts, avocados and olive oil. Include plenty of lean protein and fiber to round things out. Try to fill half your plate at each meal with fruits and vegetables. They’re full of anti-oxidants and supply important nutrients. Avoid white flour, generally found in breads and pastries. Losing any extra pounds can help, too. Maintaining a healthy weight means a better chance at a healthy brain. Be happy. Human beings are social creatures. The brain is designed to interact with others and derives great benefit from close relationships. When you’re happy, your brain is happy. When you’re stressed or depressed, your brain releases a chemical called cortisol. Cortisol in small doses is useful for alertness and concentration. When it lingers, however, it attacks the cells in the hippocampus, where memories are formed. Getting plenty of sleep is also important for relaxing and renewing the mind.

Is it Possible to Prevent Cataracts? Millions of people are affected by cataracts, which Prevent Blindness America says is the most common cause of vision loss for individuals over the age of 40. In the United States, there are more cases of cataracts than glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration combined. The prevalence of cataracts makes some wonder if they can be prevented. According to The Mayo Clinic, studies have yet to determine a way to prevent cataracts or even slow their progression. However, eye doctors and other experts say that certain strategies can help keep the eyes and the body healthy, which may keep cataracts at bay. REGULAR EYE EXAMINATIONS Visiting the eye doctor on an annual basis, or as recommended by an optician or ophthalmologist, can help detect cataracts and eye problems early on. This helps prevent vision loss and enables patients to take proactive steps to treat their cataracts. QUIT SMOKING Smoking affects eyesight and eye health. Research suggests that smoking increases a person’s chances of developing cataracts. The lenses of the eyes are mostly made up of arranged proteins, and sometimes these proteins stick together, breaking their careful formation and affecting the transparency of the lens. PROTECT THE EYES Always wear sunglasses with UV protection, particularly glasses that block UVB rays, when spending time outdoors. MANAGE DIABETES Although the reasons why are still not fully understood, individuals with diabetes mellitus face a greater risk of developing cataracts. That risk may be elevated by as much as 60 percent. When increased blood sugar enters the lenses of the eyes, sorbitol forms, and both this and fructose can build up in the lenses. Increased sugar causes water to be absorbed inside the lens, resulting in swelling and increased cloudiness. IMPROVE THE DIET A healthy diet should be a priority for everyone, including people at a greater risk for cataracts. Eating foods high in antioxidants like beta-carotene, selenium and vitamins C and E may help prevent cataracts. That’s because antioxidants help the body to fight free radicals, which can contribute to cataracts later in life. 6

FAST MEALS
Warm weather provides a great opportunity to slow down and savor time spent having fun in the great outdoors. But time spent away from home often leads to meals made on the fly or last-minute jaunts to a nearby fast-food restaurant. Though last-minute meals or trips to the local burger joint might be convenient, they are not always healthy. Fortunately, there are other ways to eat well even when you’re pressed for time. • CHOOSE FAST-COOKING FOODS. Stock the pantry with items that will cook quickly. Fresh produce can be steamed or grilled in only a few minutes and served alone as a vegetarian meal or mixed with other foods for a quick entree. Seafood tends to cook quite fast, and many seafood dishes make for a low-fat source of healthy protein and essential fatty acids. Seafood also is lighter on the stomach, which fits well with the smaller meals people tend to enjoy during warm weather. • HAVE PREPARED ITEMS ON STANDBY. Keep the refrigerator stocked with already-washed vegetables and lettuce. Par-boiled potatoes or pasta can be mixed in with a number of different ingredients to create a filling meal. When free time allows, develop a plan so meals take less time to prepare. If frozen items must be defrosted, make sure to put them in the refrigerator the day before they will be cooked to begin the thawing period. • DON’T FRET A NO-FUSS NIGHT. Not every meal has to be a three-course delight. A fast dinner could equate to a sandwich or salad. Breakfast foods for dinner are also quite popular and can cook up quickly. Surprise everyone with French toast or pancakes made savory with bits of bacon and spinach in the batter. When all else fails, a bowl of cereal can be adequate and fast. • WHEN DINING OUT, GO HEALTHY. Sometimes takeout or a meal out with friends or family is the perfect ending to a great day. Restaurant food tends to pack more fat and calories into larger-than-normal portion sizes, so choose steamed or broiled foods whenever possible. Divide larger portions among other diners. Clear soups are better for you than cream-based soups. Try to fill up on vegetables rather than bread served before the meal. 10

Plop out any Kentucky map and you’ll notice several lakes adorn the otherwise river-chopped landscape. We have mountain lakes in the east, recreational lakes in the south, and land between some lakes in the west. That’s a bunch of lakes! Plop out another map of Kentucky at the turn of the century, however, and you’ll not see hardly any. In fact, just three. Rivers have always been a staple of Kentucky, and the state’s history was written into every bend and set of falls the 90,000 miles of streams gave us. Cities sprung, cities faltered, cities flooded. It was the latter that led to a bunch of lakes. Depression, 1937. Clouds moved into the Ohio River valley that grey January and started a downpour that lasted a month. Before all was dry and done, Louisville and Paducah along with several other cities sat underwater. Levees failed. Sandbags did little. The progress of the 20s was ruined and cleanup took epic proportions. Enter FDR. In 1938, he signed into law the Flood Control Act. It authorized the building of dams along rivers to help prevent further flooding. Dams weren’t a new phenomenon, but this took the prevention to a new level. It was through this measure that many lakes were orchestrated in Kentucky; perhaps a better word: Engineered. Between the Army Corps of Engineers and the TVA, the Kentucky map is now full of blue expanse that came with playground for the rest of us. State Parks and recreation areas began to dot the surrounding landscape, and countless pontoon boats found a resting place in new coves. One such lake was created along the Nolin River north of Mammoth Cave in 1963. In March of that year, the project begun by the Corps in 1959 came to completion. I wasn’t around at its birth, but I helped celebrate its 50th. On August 3, 2013, the official birthday party took place for Nolin Lake. As a patron of its recreation and beauty the past several years, I can say that the ruggedness is unique to any other lake statewide. There is just something special about Nolin, and I was glad to see it get a party last year. Good to see you on the map, Nolin Lake. These days, first-time grandmas are scoring such goodies at parties thrown for them by friends and loved ones. “Grandbaby Showers,” common in the Midwest, are catching on elsewhere, says manners maven Peggy Post, director of the Emily Post Institute, who calls it “a sweet idea.” Lyree White, 52, an adminstrative assistant at a public health agency in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, received baby gifts at a shower thrown by colleagues before the birth of her first grandchild, now a toddler. “I didn’t want to be in the limelight,” White recalls. “But they wanted to do something special to celebrate that time with me.”

How To Address Varicose Veins Men and women alike suffer from varicose veins, which can be a cosmetic nuisance or a symptom of a serious medical condition. New varicose vein treatments are enabling individuals to live happier lives. Varicose veins are enlarged, gnarled veins that can resemble the twisted roots of a tree. They develop when the one-way valves in veins that carry blood to the heart are faulty. Blood backs up in the veins as a result, and stretches the vein. According to experts from Meridian Health, varicose veins are very common and affect half of all Americans ages 50 and older. But they’re not just a concern for seniors. Anyone can develop varicose veins, but women are at a greater risk than men. Varicose veins typically do not have any symptoms, except for the visual presence of deep blue or purple, bulging veins that largely occur on the legs and feet. However, aches in the legs, heavy feeling, itching around veins, or throbbing may also occur. Similar to varicose veins are spider veins, which are smaller and closer to the skin surface. Pregnancy, age and stretching of the veins are contributors to varicose veins. Being overweight or standing for long durations of time are other contributors, as is wearing restrictive clothing. There are a number of treatments that have been developed for varicose veins. During sclerotherapy, a solution is injected into a small or medium-sized vein to scar it and close it up. Eventually the vein will shrivel and fade. A similar procedure is done with lasers to shrink the vein without the need for needles or surgery. Catheter procedures use a heated tube inserted into the vein to collapse the vein and seal it shut. Vein stripping involves removing large veins through several small incisions. It is usually an outpatient procedure but will require a surgery. In most cases, blood will naturally reroute to other veins in the legs after one of these procedures.
