The Kentucky Hemp Industry has blossomed over the past five years and continues to grow every day. In fact, the largest and first hemp field in the state of Kentucky is located in Harrison County. Where tobacco was once king, Hemp is quickly rising to become the top Kentucky crop grown in the state. What better way to celebrate the past and future of Kentucky Hemp than with a festival? On Saturday, June 8, 2019 you can do just that. Cynthiana will be hosting the first hemp festival of its kind in Kentucky, Kentucky Hemp Days, at the end of National Hemp History Week. Celebrate hemp through artisan vendors, live music, hemp infused beer and foods, legislative forums, hemp farm tours, and more. Interested in being a vendor? You are encouraged to sell your goods at the event and sell items that are hemp related (rope, soaps, oils, sprays, food, etc.) You do not have to sell hemp related items, but all items must be handmade, locally made, or Kentucky Proud in order to be considered. The deadline to register as a vendor is May 25, 2019. All vendors will be showcased on the Kentucky Hemp Days Facebook page. A Memorial ensuring that all South Central Kentucky Aviators’ stories are never forgotten. South Central Kentucky has played a significant role in the history of aviation starting with the first flight in the early 1900s to shuttle missions into space in the past several years. Aviation Heritage Park honors those with ties to our area including one of the first combat pilots, a World War I flying ace, a pioneer instructor pilot, a Vietnam war hero, commanders of the Air Force Thunderbirds and Navy Blue Angels, the commander/ pilot of “Marine One,” the Presidential helicopter unit and the Mission Commander for the Atlantis space shuttle. It is the park’s mission to recognize these aviators and their extraordinary achievements so that future generations might be motivated by their accomplishments. These heroes ignite the dreams of The small outdoor park sits on the corner of America’s future generations! beautiful Basil Griffin Park at 1855 Three Springs Road in Bowling Green, Kentucky, and is free to the public. As you stroll through the park which currently has 6 aircraft, you can get “up and personal” while learning about the history of each and their pilots. A permanent museum will be built on the property and is slated to open in 2020. The 11,000 square foot building will house classroom and meeting spaces, state-of-the-art displays, interpretive exhibits, and a restoration facility. This is a perfect place to take the family to learn about our area’s aviation history.

Natural Bridge State Resort Park is located in the Red River Gorge, one of the most scenic areas in Kentucky. Come and explore the beauty of natural arches and rugged sandstone cliff lines. The greatest attribute in the area is the “Natural Bridge.” This magnificent arch, which is 65 feet tall and 78 feet long, is one of the most famous natural sandstone arches in Kentucky. The view from the top of the arch is a serene natural environment. The park has 2,400 acres surrounded by the Daniel Boone National Forest. There are over 18 miles of hiking trails. The park also includes a 4-acre pond with 1-acre Hoedown Island in the middle of it. The Island is the scene of folk dancing and is a popular part of the park. Also, 40-acre Mill Creek Lake is an excellent place for fishing. You can bring your canoe and paddle while witnessing the splendid beauty of the rock formations. The awe-inspiring beauty of Natural Bridge is an inspiration to those who wish to see one of the great natural wonders of Kentucky. Make the most of your trip to the Red River Gorge area by staying at the historic Hemlock Lodge. Enjoy the view from the private balcony overlooking a stunning view into a deep valley. Check out the Natural Bridge cabin rentals and campsites near the Red River Gorge in Kentucky, one of the top state parks in the Bluegrass State.

FRANKLIN DRIVE-IN THEATRE

Celebrating50Years Since the very first drive-in theater opened in Camden, New Jersey in 1933, drive-in theaters have been a place for families, first dates, and a way for many individuals to connect to the past. Franklin Drive-In Theatre is proud to be a part of that tradition for 50 years. This historic place is only one of eight drive-in theaters left in Kentucky. Built in the 1960’s by Joe Rhoton, the theater was run by the Rhoton family for many years. Gary Price is the current owner and operator after his family bought the drive-in from its original owners in 1989. Gary boasts that the drive-in has a friendly, family atmosphere. “It is family-owned and operated and we are only the second family to operate it,” he says. The drive-in prides itself in good, affordable family entertainment for south-central Kentucky and northern Tennessee residents. Movies usually begin around April and run through November, weather permitting. When visiting you might want to come early to grab a perfect viewing spot. You’ll find kids and adults blowing bubbles or throwing football in the grassy area in front of the screen. If you’re hungry, you can eat at the concession stand where you’ll find good food at affordable prices. The drive-in does allow outside food and drink with a $5 permit paid at admission. All of this is why Franklin Drive-In still remains a true slice of Americana after 50 years in business at 6250 Nashville Road in Franklin, Kentucky,

Shanty Hollow has a boat ramp and parking area, along with a 1.3 mile looping hiking trail that leads you past a beautiful waterfall.* Its numerous sandstone bluffs and cliffs make for great climbing and rappeling. It’s a fantastic place to take in native Kentucky plants, while bird watching along the way. You can rent canoes, kayaks and pedal boats at Shanty Hollow Rentals. From the earliest European settlers in the Appalachian Mountains, Kentucky became the home of today’s Bluegrass music. Today many genres of music have come out of Kentucky. Did you know Kentucky is the birthplace of a few boy bands including Back Street Boys’ Brian Littrell and Kevin Richardson along with 98 Degrees’ Nick Lachey? Have you heard the guitar licks from Kansas’ “Dust in the Wind” and Fleetwood Mac’s “Landside?” Kentucky played a huge part in those tunes with the classic fingerstyle “The Travis Method” named after a famous Kentucky musician named Merle Travis. The song “Happy Birthday” (most popular song sung in English) also got its start in Kentucky from two sisters who were teachers, Mildred and Patty Hill. Here are some Kentucky museums dedicated to preserving US 23 Country Music Kentucky’s rich, musical heritage for future generations... Highway Museum •••••••••• ••••••••••••••••••••

Kentucky Native American Heritage Museum Festival

The Kentucky Native American Museum was founded in 1999 to promote understanding of North America’s Indigenous People from both historic and contemporary perspectives, through collection and dissemination of information about their histories, cultures, beliefs, and expressive arts; their existing communities, lifestyles, occupations and ways; and their past and ongoing contributions to Appalachia’s and our nation’s cultural weave. The museum has particular interest in providing venues for and otherwise supporting the work and lifestyles of those who preserve tribal traditions in their homes and communities through educational and social activities, creative expressions and proactive honoring of diversity in schools, museum, libraries, festivals, and other public and private outlets. The museum brings native people and the general public into closer contact with each other, promoting mutual awareness and appreciation. The museum also teaches children and adults about the Eastern Woodland Tribes which inhabited this region when Europeans first came and had significant affect on everything from choice of self-government to foodways and survival skills; whose descendants (estimated to include up to 90% of all Appalachians) still play the primary role in shaping the mountain character. The museum began as a mobile outreach to schools, libraries, museums, festivals, and Pow Wows in Kentucky and now reaches service areas in Indiana, Ohio, Tennesse, Virginia, and Western Virginia, having benefited more than 80,000 people with active participation in its programs.
