Fun Tips for the 400-Mile Yard Sale If you are planning a yard sale or garage sale in conjunction with the annual Highway 68 400-Mile Yard Sale in June, here are some tips from lolalina.com to make your sale both successful and fun. First, there are a few things NOT to do: 1. DON’T spread your wares on blankets on the ground. No one likes stooping to look at items, and people can’t see what you have from the street as they drive by your sale, which makes them less likely to stop. 2. DON’T put out items that are badly broken or are terrible eyesores. They will only detract from your sale. Just bite the bullet and take those items to the recycling center or trash can. 3. DON’T price items too high or in amounts that make it hard to make change. 4. DON’T make signs with confusing directions, too much verbiage, or small print. Now for the fun part: 1. DO advertise your sale in your local shopper (Country Peddler) or city newspaper (Daily News). This will generate much more traffic than any signage. 2. DO use your own (not for sale) furniture and accessories to beautify the sale and also to use as props for setting off items to their best advantage. 3. DO display items as they would be used in your home: clothes go on hangers; jewelry is displayed on trays or hooks; pillows are arranged on a chair; and so on. 4. DO price items simply (such as “shirts, $1 each”) rather than pricing them individually. 5. DO have fun and decorate your sale a bit to attract passers-by. Hang buntings, balloons, streamers, flags--whatever you like. 6. DO make yourself comfortable with a nice chair to relax in, a sun hat, and an ice-cold beverage to sip. 7. DO use music to create a fun atmosphere: nothing too loud or potentially offensive, of course. 8. DO use this as an opportunity to test out selling your handicrafts, art, or even seedlings, cuttings, or fresh bouquets of flowers from your garden. Why not? The 2014 Highway 68 400-Mile Yard Sale on June 5-8 will include 400 miles of bargains, antiques, collectibles, and many other items. Check out www.400mile.com or call 270-465-3786 for more information on lodging, dining, events, and locations during this annual four-day event--which is quickly becoming a beloved Kentucky summertime tradition. If you miss this special sale in June, these tips will also work for your own personal yard sale or a subdivision group, church, school, or charity yard sale event. 10

KY BBQ Book

The

Author and barbecue enthusiast Wes Berry searched for the best smoke, best flavor, and best pitmasters he could find. His book presents the menus and colorful personalities he encountered in Kentucky.

Kentucky’s culinary fame may have been built on bourbon and fried chicken, but the Commonwealth has much to offer the barbecue thrill-seeker. The Kentucky Barbecue Book is a feast for readers who are eager to sample the finest fare in the state. From the banks of the Mississippi to the hidden hollows of the Appalachian Mountains, author and barbecue enthusiast Wes Berry hit the trail in search of the best smoke, the best flavor, and the best pitmasters he could find. This handy guide presents the most succulent menus and colorful personalities in Kentucky. While other states are better known for their ’cue, the Kentucky style is distinct because of its use of mutton and traditional cooking methods. Many of the establishments featured in this book are dedicated to the time-honored craft of cooking over hot hardwood coals inside cinderblock pits. Time intensive and dangerous, these traditions are disappearing as Wes Berry, with a copy his methods requiring less manpower, KY BBQ Book less wood, and less skill gain ground. Pick up a copy of this book and hit the road before these great places are gone. “Forget about Texas, Tennessee, Kansas, and the Carolinas,” writes Steven Raichlen, author of The Barbecue! Bible. “Kentucky has some of the best American barbecue you’ve never heard of. Wes Berry may suffer from HEBD (Hyper Enthusiastic Barbecue Disorder), but he’s determined to get the word out about the wood-burning pits, lipstinging sauces, and belt-loosening barbecue pork, beef, turkey, and yes, mutton of his beloved Kentucky. In this lively, authoritative, irreverent, and meticulously researched book, you’ll experience everything from Monroe County dip (made with vinegar and lard) to Owensboro-style barbecued mutton, from burgoo (Kentucky’s iconic stew) to banana pudding.” Wes Berry, a Barren County native, earned his undergraduate degree at WKU. Born in Horse Cave and raised in Glasgow, Berry cherishes the small-scaled farms, rolling hills, abundant rivers, and diverse forests of cave country Kentucky that have shaped his work ethic and imagination. The Kentucky Barbecue Book is informed by Berry’s three years of intensive travels in Kentucky, during which he visited 160 barbecue shacks, joints, restaurants and festivals--eating, interviewing pitmasters, and taking photos along the way.

1 0 Tips for Taking G reat Vacation Ph otos Everyone loves vacation photos. The whole family loves to look back at them as little reminders of the places they have been and the faces they have seen. Taking great photos is definitely an acquired skill; a great camera doesn’t hurt either. Just a few simple tricks can add to the overall quality and enjoyment of your pictures. Here are the top 10 tips for taking great vacation photos as listed on the website onehundreddollarsamonth.com: 1. Make sure the picture will tell the story of your trip. This will help ensure you don’t take 10 pictures of one site, when you only need five. 2. Embrace technology: use your view finder. It is basically showing you the picture you are about to take. Look to see if you are cutting someone’s head off or if everything is centered. 3. Fill up the photo. Do not take pictures of anything other than what you want to remember. Try to remember to zoom, and “crop” your pictures. 4. Turn the camera. Horizontal isn’t the only way to take a picture. If that means going vertical, do it. 5. Remember the people. You go on vacation to see the sites, but you also go to create memories with whomever you are traveling. Remember to take pictures of the people, in front of the sites or not.

Snap pictures of scenery that appeals to you

6. Remember to pass the camera off. You don’t want it to seem that you actually didn’t attend any family vacations. Document your own presence. 7. Don’t be worried about posing everyone perfectly. The candid shots are the best anyway. 8. Set your action shots to take several consecutive pictures with one press of the button. You are bound to find one perfect picture for keeps. 9. Think outside the box. If you have an amazing meal at a fabulous restaurant, make sure to snap a picture. Snap pictures of the trees, if you are moved by the scenery.

Take pictures of your traveling companions in front of sites or landmarks. Members of the local Cave Country H.O.G. Chapter in front of a statue of Abraham Lincoln in Hodgenville, KY

10. Bring an extra battery and extra memory card. That way, you never get caught without picture-taking abilities. You never know when your camera will decide it’s out of juice.

Most of all, enjoy your leisure time with your family at all the fun vacation destinations in and around South Central Kentucky! 20

Aviation Heritage Park

Aviation Heritage Park located at the corner of Three Springs Road and Smallhouse Road at Basil Griffin Park, Bowling Green

A memorial to all distinguished aviators who have called South Central Kentucky home. Currently features four restored military aircraft with ties to local aviators as well as their own interesting stories. The premiere aircraft is a F-4D Phantom II 550, a plane with historic significance. Brigadier General Dan Cherry, a Bowling Green native, was at the controls on April 16, 1972 when he shot down a North Vietnamese Mig-21 during the Vietnam War.

A Grumman F9F-5 Panther: It is a representation of the plane Johnny Magda, Kentuckian, WKU alumnus, Commander of the Blue Angels and Korean War hero, flew.

A Lockheed T-33 Shooting Star: Honoring General Russ Dougherty, a Glasgow native who flew more than 70 types of aircraft and commanded the Strategic Air Command during the Cold War. The T-33 also bears the name of U.S. Air Force Captain Robert E. Mitchell who was killed in the same type of plane during a training exercise in 1962.

In October 2013 a USAF F-111 honoring Bowling Green native Colonel Arnie Franklin, who led the 1986 USAF raid on Libya was added to the park. This plane dropped the last bomb on the last night of the Desert Storm War. Park Hours: Open daily from dawn to dusk.

Kentucky: That Horse Does Kick Road Trip!!

by Cory Ramsey

I’ve seen it. It does. No question. Every true Kentuckian carries with them that narcissistic Bluegrassian belief that the entire universe revolves around blessaid Kentucky. You better believe it absolutely does the first Saturday in May. But what of the other 364 days in our 120 counties? You bet it does. Where else but in Kentucky can one launch off (circa 1750) at the Cumberland Gap; which leads to a Wilderness Road paved with pioneer hearts; onward to early Fort Boonesborough and Fort Harrod; then on to prosperous Lexington (spawned from early Transylvania colony); with an eventual turnpike to Limestone Landing; to catch up with the steamboats down the Ohio; to Louisville, founded on the Falls of the Ohio? Rivertowns along the Ohio, Green, Barren, Cumberland, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Mississippi burst asunder with progress too quick to reckon. Railroads expanded the reach like spokes on the wagon wheels that carried settlers west in the first dawn of a new Kentucky era. Tobacco, horses, coal, whiskey. A worldwide economic leader still uncontested in these categories 221 years later. Sports prowess. Naismith invented basketball. Rupp and Diddle perfected it in Kentucky. Cars invented northward near Detroit. Perfected in Bowling Green. Soft drinks fashioned first further south. Sweetened, albeit late, in Winchester. Eastern seaboard no doubt has the early American history of the 1600s, but Kentucky has that second wind of fresh history like that extra dream one gets after pressing the snooze button. Call it the Bluegrass Bonus. We got Lincoln. And the biggest Cave. It does kick. It kicks the dirt up on Black Mountain, it kicks the coal dust up in Harlan, it kicks the spurs in Lexington, it kicks the tires in Bowling Green, it kicks to country music in Pikeville, it kicks under skyline in Louisville, and it kicks back at days end under a quilt in Paducah. Kentucky Bred? Why Leave? Somewhere Else? Get Over Here. I love Kentucky. And I’ll keep kicking till I hit the bucket with a final swing. Cory Ramsey has been a fixture of Radio and TV in Kentucky for the past 15 years. Winner, William Randolph Hearst National Journalism Award, 2002. For the past five years he’s been a travel contributor to WBKO-TV’s Midday Live, and also contributes to The Big Dawg and The Wave radio in central Kentucky. He has been to every single county in Kentucky multiple times, and over 250 hiking trips. He is the Road Tripper behind Map Dot, Kentucky, found online at www.facebook.com/mapdotkentucky. 32

AREA WINERIES/VINEYARDS Take a stroll through lush vineyards and tour these wineries/ vineyards to learn how area vintners are continuing the ancient craft of winemaking. The people and soil of northern Tennessee gave this love a foundation on which dreams were built — one of agriculture, on estate vineyards, the other, a winery, with distinctive character. Recipient of 19 medals from national and international competitions in 2000, they’ve earned the respect of wine lovers everywhere. Visit the antique gallery and enjoy classic cars while surrounded by unique gifts. Munfordville...History & Hospitality Southern hospitality is what you will find in this quaint town along with a rich history. A walking tour takes you through the heart of town past buildings from the early 1800s. The Presbyterian Church Union Hospital, on Union Street, was built in 1834 and used as the Union Hospital during the Civil War. The George T. Wood house, on Caldwell Street, was home to Thomas J. Wood, Major General in the Union Army. Old Munford Inn on South Washington was one of the most famous inns during its time. It was renowned for food and hospitality. There are 9 more historic sites on the walking tour. Visit the Battle for the Bridge Historic Preserve. A place where forts still stand and fields still stretch as broad as when soldiers Union and Confederate marched, camped, fought and died here. A place where the history of America was made. Located at 1309 South Dixie Highway/US 31-W. Kentucky’s Stonehenge is the creation of Munfordville native, Chester Fryer. After scouring over 1000 acres of nearby Hatcher Valley, Chester relocated nearly every large rock he could find in order to create his masterpiece. Located at 201 Lynn Avenue. The historic community of Pine Knob, just 5 miles north of Caneyville, Kentucky, is a good place to visit on a weekend road trip, complete with the old country store built in 1939; the old 4-room Pine Knob School, built in 1925; the 120 year old Primitive Baptist Church; the Stinson House built in 1865; creeks for kids to wade; springs to quench the thirst; hiking trails up rugged old Pine Knob; and plays presented each Friday and Saturday evening from June through September. Since 1987, five different productions have been performed during the summer, including Dock Brown - Legend of an Outlaw, Down in Hoodoo Holler, Lucy and Ruth’s Diner, Daddy Took the T-Bird Away, and Bee Bop a Lula. The shows are both history and folklore as well as musically entertaining with Doo-wop and Bebop music. The Pine Knob Theatre cast not only performs during the summer at Pine Knob, but they also perform at many fine arts centers — including the Riverpark Center in Owensboro, the Henderson Fine Arts Center in Henderson, and the Alhambra Theatre in Hopkinsville — during the fall and winter months. Dinner shows are also presented each spring at Rough River State Resort Park which is only 14 miles north of Pine Knob. This beautiful spring-fed valley is very scenic, and a number of weddings are performed there each summer as well as family reunions, picnics, and photographers taking pictures of the wonderful scenery — it’s truly one of Kentucky’s little hidden treasures!
