Ask anyone about their most vivid childhood memories and if they went camping with their families, it’s those memories that often rise to the surface. Do you like the idea of camping but unsure where to start with the kids? Here are some tips for camping with kids that just may get you on your way. Look for camping destinations by lakes for swimming, boating, fishing, wading, and trails for hiking and exploring. If you are fairly new to camping, pick a campground with plenty of amenities like potable (drinkable) water, flush toilets, tent pad, fire pit, grill, picnic table. Practice before you go. Set up your tent in the backyard, layout the sleeping pads and bags, fire up your flashlights and headlamps. Create checklists to ensure you have just about everything you will need when you arrive at your campsite. Give each family member a copy of the list. This allows everyone to be involved and pack their own clothing, sleeping bag and pad, gear, toys, books, headlamps and other necessities. It’s a good idea to double check the kids’ camping gear bags so that crucial items are not forgotten. Consider these items for your checklists: food, cooking and eating supplies, tent and tarps, first aid kit, flashlights (extra batteries) and lantern, firewood, extra water, tools, and duct tape. Plan meals and prepare as much as you can in advance. Along with healthy 6

options, special snacks will be a treat for the entire family. Oh, and don’t forget the s’mores fixin’s! It’s like playing house! Get everyone involved with establishing areas for cooking, cleaning, tents, trash. Assign chores, and then commence to having fun! Walk the boundaries of your campsite with your kids so they know where they’re allowed to go and where is off-limits. Use the buddy system to make sure they never wander off alone, and make sure they know they always have to tell an adult if they’re going somewhere out of eyesight. Inclement weather could leave you with more downtime than you anticipated. If the rain or thunderstorms disrupt your planned activities be sure to have boredombusting games and activities available. Finally, be flexible when camping with kids. Odds are your outing probably isn’t going to go exactly how you planned it. Maybe someone in your group just isn’t good at getting going in the morning, or an afternoon rainstorm disrupts your plans. Roll with it. Nature is often unpredictable. Don’t stress out, enjoy being outdoors with your kids.

Summertime is filled with vacations, kids out of school, and a lot more time to spend with family. Why not add a furry addition to your family this summer? Adopting a pet from the shelter is always an exciting event. Here are a few reasons why summer is a great time to adopt your new pet. 1. MORE TIME TO SPEND WITH IT. If you have some spare time during summer, then it’s perfect for bringing home your newly “BEASLEY & adopted cat or MISTER” “MAGGIE” dog. You can help him or her settle into the new family environment, get used to your routines, and start a schedule for feeding, walking, and play time. Adopting in the summer helps shelters to alleviate the stress of overcrowding. There are many factors to bear in mind before choosing your pet. Wigwam Village Inn #2 is the most unique motel in all of Kentucky. It celebrates 80 years of colorful history in 2017, and staying there will be an experience you will never forget. The wigwam villages began as a dream of Frank A. Redford in the early 1900s. Frank’s inspirations were a popular ice cream shop shaped like an upside down cone and the authentic teepees he’d seen on a Sioux reservation in South Dakota. His dream became reality in 1935 when construction on Wigwam Village #1 was completed in Horse Cave. Wigwam Village Inn #2 was completed in 1937 in Cave City, and five more were built over time in Alabama, Florida, New Orleans, California, and Arizona. From the beginning, the wigwam villages were gathering places with an atmosphere of old-time neighborliness. The community area at the center of the circle of wigwams seemed to invite people to come and talk. Now, the playground at the center of the teepees invites young folks to play, and the new 16’x16’ “Misting Deck” is a great way to cool off on a hot summer day-- regardless of your age. Of the seven original Wigwam Villages, only three remain. The main building, made up of 38 tons of concrete and 13 tons of steel, stands 52’ high. It originally housed a restaurant and gift shop, but the restaurant was closed in the mid ‘60s, and the main building now houses only a gift shop. Smaller wigwams on either side of the gift shop are public restrooms. Each of the remaining 15 buildings are bedrooms, complete with 12

private bathrooms. Ten of these buildings have one double bed, and the other five have two double beds. Furnishings in each of the buildings are original from the 1930’s and are made of hickory and cane. Because of the historic nature of the rooms, pets are not allowed. Because Wigwam Village Inn #2 offers such a unique atmosphere, it is a popular place for travelers to stay in the Mammoth Cave area. Families return year after year because of the warmth and personal enjoyment they experience there. It is an opportunity to slow down and share a real family vacation in one of America’s finest vacation destination areas. The Wigwam Village Inn #2 will continue to preserve the heritage and atmosphere of this historic Kentucky Heritage Council landmark. The Commonwealth’s ‘Uncommonly Good’ Stew Kentucky’s own unique stew, known as “burgoo,” is a culinary tradition well over a hundred years old. What is burgoo, exactly? As with any great, long-standing foodways icon, it’s open to interpretation. No two cooks make burgoo the same way, and recipes are often fiercely-guarded secrets, but there are some guidelines to which most burgoos adhere. Most dishes include beef, pork, chicken, mutton, rabbit, or some combination of them all. In the old days, cooks used whatever meat was convenient: anything from venison to wild squirrel to game birds. The traditional burgoo recipe is also packed with a vegetable medley containing tomatoes, potatoes, onions, lima beans, and corn. Burgoo also often contains barbecue. In fact, the International Bar-B-Q Festival held each year in Owensboro, KY, offers an award for Best Burgoo, and more than 1,000 gallons of this savory stew are served at the festival each year. When it comes to cooking, most people agree that burgoo should be a thick, hearty stew. For this reason, it’s customary to cook burgoo for several hours to achieve the right consistency. The dish is also often served with fresh, thick bread, cornbread, or crackers that are good for soaking up the deliciousness. What’s up with the name? There’s no definitive theory as to how this trademark food got its peculiar title. Some say it came from the mispronunciation of either “bird stew” or “barbecue.” Others say it’s derived from bulgur--a type of cracked wheat-and ragout, a type of French stew. Burgoo is so ingrained in the culture of Kentucky that it’s served on Kentucky Derby Day, at political events, sporting events, fundraisers, and more. Burgoo is a time-tasted tradition that’s here to stay in the Bluegrass State. Find Kentucky restaurants that serve burgoo and try this classic dish, or you can make some at home to share.

* 1 (3-pound) chicken, cut into 8 pieces * 1 pound beef top round, cut into 1/2-inch cubes * 6 cups beef broth * 1/4 teaspoon ground red pepper * 2 (16-ounce) packages frozen vegetable gumbo mix, thawed * 1 (6-ounce) can tomato paste In a soup pot, combine chicken, beef, broth & pepper; bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat to low, cover loosely & simmer 1 hour, stirring occasionally. Add vegetable gumbo mix & tomato paste. Increase heat to medium-high & return to a boil. Let boil 25-30 minutes, or until thick, stirring occasionally. 18

The Kentucky Museum is located in the Kentucky Building on the campus of WKU. The Museum houses six major permanent exhibits and several changing exhibits. There is a variety of partnerships, services, opportunities, workshops, camps, and other outreach provided to the public each year. In addition, the Museum works closely with WKU students and faculty to enhance instruction through a variety of tours, activities, and programs. The Museum also works with area K-12 teachers offering both tours and other educational resources. Make plans to visit the Kentucky Museum. SOUTH UNION HISTORIC SITE OF THE SOUTH UNION SHAKER VILLAGE 1807-1922 In 1807 the Shakers founded South Union, one of nineteen communal villages the group established in America. Financial hardship and dwindling membership by the early 20th century forced the sale of the village in 1922. South Union today is more than just a memory. It is a place to visit and learn firsthand about the Shaker way of life. Several of the original buildings have been restored and now house a fine museum of Shaker folklife and material culture, a unique gift shop, and overnight lodgings. While visiting the Shaker Museum, you will have an opportunity to see beautiful artifacts such as homespun blankets, coverlets, kerosene lamps, ironstone, butter churns, oval boxes, and Shaker furniture. These artifacts tell so much about the dayto-day lives of the Shakers at South Union during that period of time. As a result, cookbooks present a unique opportunity to analyze changing foodways and can yield surprising discoveries about society’s tastes and priorities. , John In van Willigen explores the state’s history through its changing food culture, beginning with Lettice Bryan’s The Kentucky Housewife (originally published in 1839). Considered one of the earliest regional cookbooks, The Kentucky Housewife includes pre–Civil War recipes intended for use by a household staff instead of an individual cook, along with instructions for serving the family. Van Willigen also shares the story of the original Aunt Jemima--the advertising persona of Nancy Green, born in Montgomery County, Kentucky (pictured at left)--who was one of many African American voices in Kentucky culinary history. is a journey through the history of the commonwealth, showcasing the shifting priorities and innovations of the times. Analyzing the historical importance of a wide range of publications, from the nonprofit and charity cookbooks that flourished at the end of the twentieth century to the contemporary cookbook that emphasizes local ingredients, van Willigen provides a valuable perspective on the state’s social history. John van Willigen is professor emeritus of anthropology at the University of Kentucky and the author of many books, including Food and Everyday Life on Kentucky Family Farms, 1920–1950.

From the time man first took flight in the early 1900s to the recent shuttle missions into space, South Central Kentucky has played a significant role in the history of aviation. One of the first pilots to fly in combat claimed ties to Bowling Green, as did a World War I flying ace, a pioneer instructor pilot, a Vietnam war hero, Commanders of the famed Air Force Thunderbirds and Navy Blue Angels, the Commander/ Pilot of “Marine One”, the presidential helicopter unit and the Mission Commander for the space shuttle Atlantis. These aviators--and their ties to South Central Kentucky-deserve to be recognized and celebrated so that future generations might be made aware of and motivated by their extraordinary achievements. This is the mission of Aviation Heritage Park. The park is open daylight hours. Admission and parking are free.

The 170,000-acre national recreation area in Western Kentucky and Tennessee is located near I-24, about 90 miles north of Nashville, and just south of Paducah. For gifted students who have completed sixth, seventh, or eighth grade, SCATS presents a unique learning environment to explore new ideas, develop concepts, make friends, and share experiences. From almost 30 different course options ranging from arts and humanities to mathematics and sciences, students are placed in four of their top ten choices and attend those classes every day. Teachers provide students with a great deal of individualized attention in the classroom. SCATS classes go beyond the limitations of the traditional classroom to allow students to learn at higher levels and to think and create in their own ways.

VAMPY assembles some of the brightest and most enthusiastic seventh through tenth graders from counties around Kentucky, states across the nation, and countries all over the world. The VAMPY community reflects the diverse backgrounds, interests, and pursuits of its students who all have at least one thing in common: a love of learning. For gifted and talented students who crave knowledge and academic challenge, VAMPY offers a lifechanging world of both learning and friendship.

Kentucky with hiking trails, scenic caves, historic buildings, picnic grounds and one of the nation’s outdoor theatres. The historic community of Pine Knob, just 5 miles north of Caneyville, Kentucky, is a good place to visit on a weekend road trip, complete with the old country store built in 1939; the old 4-room Pine Knob School, built in 1925; the 120+ year old Primitive Baptist Church; the Stinson House built in 1865; creeks for kids to wade; springs to quench the thirst; hiking trails up rugged old Pine Knob; and plays presented each Friday and Saturday evening from June through September. Since 1987, five different productions have been performed during the summer, including Dock Brown - Legend of an Outlaw, Down in Hoodoo Holler, Lucy and Ruth’s Diner, Daddy Took the T-Bird Away, and Bee Bop a Lula. The shows are both history and folklore as well as musically entertaining with Doo-wop and Bebop music. The Pine Knob Theatre cast not only performs during the summer at Pine Knob, but they also perform at many fine arts centers — including the Riverpark Center in Owensboro, the Henderson Fine Arts Center in Henderson, and the Alhambra Theatre in Hopkinsville — during the fall and winter months. Dinner shows are also presented each spring at Rough River State Resort Park which is only 14 miles north of Pine Knob. This beautiful spring-fed valley is very scenic, and a number of weddings are performed there each summer as well as family reunions, picnics, and photographers taking pictures of the wonderful scenery — it’s truly one of Kentucky’s little hidden treasures!
