Beech Bend Park has announced the largest water park expansion in park history. The multi-million dollar expansion includes Cyclone Saucers, the FIRST EVER North American installation of ProSlide’s FlyingSAUCER ride. This history-making, ground breaking water slide will offer a very unique ride experience. Riders will fly around the edge of three “flying saucers” at high speeds. At nearly 500 feet long with a 55 foot elevation change, Cyclone Saucers is truly a one-of-a-kind experience. Joining Cyclone Saucers in 2016 are three more new iconic rides. Tidal Wave positions riders face to face as they surge up a thrilling wall and hang weightless before rocketing back down. Riptide features an intense dark ride section, before plummeting into two separate funnels. Polynesian Plunge drops riders from the top of the slide tower into a swirling bowl. All four slides are being custom designed for Beech Bend Park by ProSlide Technology, Inc. The new rides open in June, 2016. Beech Bend Park is a family owned park which employs approximately 300 people per season. It is part of a large entertainment complex that includes Beech Bend Raceway and Beech Bend Campground, and brings almost one million visitors to the Bowling Green area each year.

A short 45 minute drive up the back roads of Highway 185 north of Bowling Green will take you to one of the most complete historic communities in Kentucky with hiking trails, scenic caves, historic buildings, picnic grounds and one of the nation’s outdoor theatres. The historic community of Pine Knob, just 5 miles north of Caneyville, Kentucky, is a good place to visit on a weekend road trip, complete with the old country store built in 1939; the old 4-room Pine Knob School, built in 1925; the 120 year old Primitive Baptist Church; the Stinson House built in 1865; creeks for kids to wade; springs to quench the thirst; hiking trails up rugged old Pine Knob; and plays presented each Friday and Saturday evening from June through September. Since 1987, five different productions have been performed during the summer, including Dock Brown - Legend of an Outlaw, Down in Hoodoo Holler, Lucy and Ruth’s Diner, Daddy Took the T-Bird Away, and Bee Bop a Lula. The shows are both history and folklore as well as musically entertaining with Doo-wop and Bebop music. The Pine Knob Theatre cast not only performs during the summer at Pine Knob, but they also perform at many fine arts centers — including the Riverpark Center in Owensboro, the Henderson Fine Arts Center in Henderson, and the Alhambra Theatre in Hopkinsville — during the fall and winter months. Dinner shows are also presented each spring at Rough River State Resort Park which is only 14 miles north of Pine Knob. This beautiful spring-fed valley is very scenic, and a number of weddings are performed there each summer as well as family reunions, picnics, and photographers taking pictures of the wonderful scenery — it’s truly one of Kentucky’s little hidden treasures!

The sun is out, and your sunscreen is on. (Don’t forget sunscreen for Fido, too. Melanoma is a pet health issue, also.) Summer is the perfect time to squeeze in some adventure and relaxation. Here are ten ideas for summertime pet-friendly activities that are guaranteed to please both you and your four-legged best friend. Buy a kiddie pool & invite friends over for a pooch pool party and barbecue for the humans. Find a restaurant with a dog friendly patio, bring a book, and order a summer drink. You’ll be amazed at all the people who will stop to say hello. Organize a trail hike appropriate for your dog’s fitness level and breed. Be cautious not to go in the heat of the day, and be sure to bring a doggie water receptacle for breaks. Take your dog camping with you--bonus points for letting him or her sleep in the tent. Go to a lake or other safe body of water for an afternoon of swimming. Many breeds other than retrievers love the water; see if your dog is one of them. Consider a canine lifejacket if you’re boating with your dog. Look into local canine dog shows, contests, or field trials that you and your best friend could enter. You might train with a frisbee, for agility, or even just regular obedience training. This is a great way to bond with your pet and teach him or her some impressive new tricks. If you have a mild mannered and gentle dog, look into local hospitals or nursing homes to see if there is a need for a therapy dog. A visit from a friendly furry pet is sure to bring a smile to ill people. For small dogs, a bike pull trailer meant for children can be easily converted to accommodate dogs, allowing you to take the littlest members along for leisurely summer bike rides. Be sure your pet is safely harnessed in so that he or she can’t leap out, and always avoid roadways with dogs. Check out the local dog park. Most cities have some designated parks where dogs are allowed to roam off leash. Always ensure your pet is up-to-date on vaccinations when frequenting high dog-trafficked areas. Take a scenic car ride with the windows (partially) down. If your dog loves to stick his or her head out the window, consider getting him or her “doggles,” which are canine goggles designed to protect eyes and shield from the sun as well. It has been proven that people who include their dogs in their everyday lives tend to forge better bonds and longer lasting friendships with them. Dogs that are exposed to a variety of situations tend to have less anxiety and can be less timid. By getting outdoors and including your furry ‘children’ in family outings this summer, you’ll be sure to make lasting memories while also helping your dog to be the best companion possible. 10

Historic Neighborhood Walking Tour

The College Hill Neighborhood and Historic District in Bowling Green is a highly concentrated group of eighty nineteenth and early-twentieth century residences and churches of architectural and historical significance. Styles, forms, and construction methods are mixed freely throughout the district. The majority of structures were built in Queen Anne, Greek Revival, Italianate, or Eclectic styles between 1840 and 1930. The spine of this residential district is State Street, a principal north-south street that connects the Downtown Historic District with the campus of WKU on College Hill. The neighborhood also includes Chestnut, College, and Park Streets that parallel State Street. Starting in the 1880s, the presence of three colleges on the summit of the hill-Ogden College, Potter College, and now WKU--stimulated the growth of this residential section between the hill and the city’s historic core. In addition to housing members of the academic community, the College Hill area has served as home to bank presidents, a minister to Peru, judges, authors, and all manners of the professional sector. Today, this is the largest historic residential neighborhood in the city that maintains its original integrity and character. Begin your tour at the Warren County Public Library (Main Branch) parking lot located at 1225 State Street. Starting on College Street, the walking route follows the main streets of College, State, Chestnut, and Park first towards the hill and then back with occasional detours onto 12th, 13th, and 14th Avenues. WKU Summer Camps for Kids
ART & MUSIC PROGRAMS For more information, visit www.wku.edu/kentuckymuseum The Kentucky Museum offers four weeks of summer camp in June for kids ages 6-12 years. Each camp has its own specific age range. All camps are Monday-Friday from 8:30am-12pm in the Kentucky Museum education classroom. There is a snack break daily around 10am with snacks supplied by the museum. Children may register for more than one camp. Please remember space is limited and spots are filled on a first come, first serve basis. Camp fees are: members - $110, non-members - $125. Each student will have work exhibited during the Kentucky Museum’s summer camp exhibit in the Dorothy Grider Garden Gallery. The exhibit opens Saturday, July 16 and runs through Monday, August 29. A reception honoring the campers and teachers will be open and free to the public on Friday, August 5, 5-8 pm during the Bowling Green Gallery Hop. Campers will learn basic hand building techniques to create a variety of functional and decorative ceramic pieces. Students will have an opportunity to paint their work. Pottery will be fired after the camp and participants will need to pick up kiln fired work approximately two weeks after camp. Painting camp activities will be rich in contemporary art exploration. Students will use the techniques and imagery from the poured canvases of Pollock, paper cutouts of Matisse and Liechtenstein’s pop art paintings. Students will also create and paint their own assemblage. Campers will create in 3 dimensions. We will make portraits in the style of Giocometti, Word sculptures, Calder mobiles along with Chihuly sculptures. Campers will tour the WKU campus to view a wide variety of outdoor sculpture. All things paper - paper making and casting, marbling, paper folding, booklets, bookmaking, printing and dying.
The WKU Summer String Institute is a concentrated week of study for violin, viola, cello & bass students. Students will participate in master classes, group instruction, orchestral study, concerts & musical enrichment. The Institute features two courses of study: Twinklers--a half-day session for young beginners--and a full-day session for elementary through high school age students. The teaching faculty of the Summer String Institute includes WKU music faculty members & guest artist teachers. • TWINKLERS: HALF-DAY, 9:00-11:30AM. Open to brand new beginners & students studying Suzuki violin in Books 1-2, Ages 4 & older. Registration is $125 by June 20. • YOUNG MUSICIANS: FULL- DAY, 9AM –3PM. Open to elementary through high school students who play violin, viola, cello & bass. Full-day session includes lunch. Registration is $175 by June 20.

BG Day Trips:
Starting in 1980, legendary “girl singer” Rosemary Clooney, a native Kentuckian, began calling 106 Riverside Drive in historic Augusta, Kentucky home (pictured at right). Located on the banks of the Ohio River, this was her retreat from the demands of her career and a haven for rest between performances all over the world. After Rosemary’s passing, her children approached the Dr. Steve Henry (former Kentucky Lieutenant Governor) and his wife, Heather French Henry (former Miss America from Augusta) about purchasing the home. They did so enthusiastically and since that time have devoted extraordinary time and resources to preserving the home and acquiring artifacts related to Rosemary’s life and career. With the help of Paramount Studios, Nick and Nina Clooney, Gail and Chris Darley, countless volunteers, and numerous corporate and private sponsors, the house held its “Grand Opening” on October 1, 2005. This modest home on the banks of Rosemary’s beloved Ohio River has been visited by thousands of fans from all over the world. The Henrys are so pleased that they have been able to contribute to preserving Rosemary’s legacy, introduce many to the quaint little river-town she so adored, and preserve so much memorabilia that might otherwise have been lost. Visitors can “Come On-A Rosie’s House” where her story comes to life through exhibits that include: • childhood photos from her years in Maysville, KY; • starting out at WLW in Cincinnati; • touring as “The Clooney Sisters” with Betty in the Tony Pastor’s band; • chart hits of the fifties like “Come On-My House,” “Hey There,” “This Ole House,” and “Mambo Italiano”; • movies co-starring Bob Hope, Guy Mitchell, and Jose Ferrer; • the largest collection of “White Christmas” memorabilia anywhere in the world (costume pictured at right); • costumes worn by Bing, Bob, Vera, and Rosemary, as well as sketches by Edith Head and Bob Mackie for designs worn by Rosemary; • friendships with legends like Bob, Bing, Tony, Dean & Frank; • life as a wife and mother of five children, and numerous grandchildren; • building materials from the demolition of her mansion at 1019 Roxbury Drive in Beverly Hills; • exhibits dedicated to her nephew George Clooney’s life in Augusta and his successful acting career; • her Augusta bedroom as it was when she lived there; • and much more.

For gifted students, SCATS presents a unique learning environment to explore new ideas, develop concepts, make friends, and share experiences. SCATS classes open new doors of learning for gifted young people and provide a comfortable social atmosphere where they can be who they truly are. The primary emphasis of VAMPY is academics. VAMPY’S rigourous educational environment reminds students that learning is an enjoyable process. Students spend six hours a day immersed in a topic of their choosing that ignites their curiosity and inspires their thinking. When not in class, students are playing sports, participating in cookouts, dances, and talent shows, or hanging out on the lawn in front of their residence hall, playing music, making crafts, and getting to know one another. 30
