2018 IN

KENTUCKY

Stay-ca-tion: Noun; a vacation spent at home involving trips to local attractions.

We just got past the spending of the holidays, and now Summer 2018 is right around the corner. More and more families are opting out of traveling during the summer break. “Staycations” can be just as enjoyable as a trip out of town without the hassle of travel. Of course, staying home is also much easier on the wallet. Discover how to make this summer break fun, memorable, and budget-friendly without leaving the comforts of home. To start your planning off right, generate a list of indoor and outdoor options to explore. If the weather is nice, ideas for fun activities could include a day at the zoo (Louisville), a picnic at a local park, a bike ride, a hike through the woods, or day trip to Mammoth Cave National Park. If it’s chilly or rain is in the forecast, check the local movie listings, go bowling, visit WKU’s Kentucky Museum or South Union Shaker Village for a disguised educational outing, plan an indoor swim day at a local pool, or enjoy a little exercise at a roller rink or bowling alley. Remember: a night or two at a nice local hotel, motel, or bed and breakfast delivers the feel of a vacation without the travel expense. Venturing out every day can get expensive, so be resourceful with activities to do at home. Stock up on art supplies for a picture painting or craft-making day. Create a scavenger hunt and turn the family loose on an adventure. Have a movie and popcorn night, then turn the living room into a fort using blankets and sheets for added amusement. Cook meals together around different foreign country themes. For example, a night in Italy could be a “make your own pizza” dinner. You can make your own home a staycation paradise by hanging a hammock and building a fire pit. For a more rugged approach, have a cookout, make s’mores, and set up a tent for an overnight camping experience. Once you’ve narrowed the list of activities, fill in your calendar based on the 10-day forecast. Every child or teen has different preferences of what he or she enjoys, so get his or her input to make your staycation more successful. For a household on a budget, so many possibilities already exist in your area. Keep in mind that time spent together is about the memories made, not the money spent. Visit www.kentuckytourism.com, www.nps.gov (to find a national park) or www.stateparks.com (to find a state park). 4

Don’t miss your opportunity this summer to tour one of Kentucky’s premier historical sites that features over two centuries of antiques, paintings, and architecture rendered beautifully in the Federal Style. Formal gardens, outbuildings--that include a smokehouse, historic kitchen, carriage house, cabin, and springhouse--are set amongst century old magnolias, maples, and cedar trees. Hear the song My Old Kentucky Home sung on your tour by your guide in period costume for your adventure finale. The quintessential Kentucky experience is awaiting your arrival at My Old Kentucky Home State Park every March through December. Other things to do while visiting My Old Kentucky Home include birding, camping, visiting the gift shop and museum, attending the outdoor drama The Stephen Foster Story, picknicking, and playing tennis and golf. Burgoo, Barbecue & Bourbon:

A Kentucky Culinary Trinity by Albert W. A. Schmid foreword by Loreal “Butcher Babe” Gavin photographs by Jessica Ebelhar

Burgoo, barbecue, and bourbon have long been acknowledged as a trinity of good taste in Kentucky. Known as the gumbo of the Bluegrass, burgoo is a savory stew that includes meat—usually smoked—from at least one “bird of the air,” at least one “beast of the field,” and as many vegetables as the cook wants to add. Often you’ll find this dish paired with one of the Commonwealth’s other favorite exports, bourbon, and the state’s distinctive barbecue. Award-winning author and chef Albert W. A. Schmid serves up a feast for readers in Burgoo, Barbecue & Bourbon, sharing recipes and lore surrounding these storied culinary traditions. He introduces readers to new and forgotten versions of favorite regional dishes from the time of Daniel Boone to today and uncovers many lost recipes, such as Mush Biscuits, Kentucky Tombstone Pudding, and the Original Kentucky Whiskey Cake. He also highlights classic bourbon drinks that pair well with burgoo and barbecue, including Moon Glow, Bourbaree, and the Hot Tom and Jerry. Featuring cuisine from the early American frontier to the present day, this entertaining book is filled with fascinating tidbits and innovative recipes for the modern cook. Albert W. A. Schmid is the director of Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management at Guilford Technical Community College in Jamestown, North Carolina, and is the former director of the Hotel-Restaurant Management and Hospitality Management Departments at Sullivan University’s National Center for Hospitality Studies in Louisville, Kentucky. He is the author of The Old Fashioned: An Essential Guide to the Original Whiskey Cocktail, The Manhattan Cocktail, the award-winning The Kentucky Bourbon Cookbook, and the award-winning The Beverage Manager’s Guide to Wines, Beers and Spirits.

“Schmid shines on burgoo & bourbon. Side dishes & breads flesh out the concept.” -- Wes Berry, author of The Kentucky Barbecue Book Available cloth 978-0-8131-6988-0, epub 978-0-8131-6989-7, and web pdf 978-0 8131-6990-3 $27.95, 184 pages, Pub. date: 06/23/2017 5.5” x 8.5”, 18 color photos 10

Casting a Line in Kentucky

Fishing is one of America’s favorite outdoor recreational pastimes. Whether you’re looking for relaxation or the challenge of the catch, fishing offers an excellent opportunity to spend quality time with family and friends and create lifelong memories. Lakes, rivers, streams or ponds, Kentucky has an abundance of great fishing waters. You don’t have to travel far to cast a line.

Is 135 miles long and flows through Western Kentucky. It is a tributary of the Green River and is stocked with smallmouth bass, crappie, and is the best spot for hybrid striped bass in the state. There are great camping facilities, playgrounds for the kids, and a lodge with a huge dining room. Located in Dunmor, is enclosed by dramatic 50-foot sandstone bluffs rising above the water’s edge and surrounded by hardwood forests. “An angler’s delight” describes 788-acre Lake Malone. The fishermen in your family can try their skill at catching channel catfish, largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, and redear sunfish. Don’t have a fishing pole? No problem! Ask about the park’s fishing loaner program where you can check out free equipment. Is known for its unique blue/green water, and is one of the top five lakes in Kentucky for catfish, bass, crappie, and walleye fishing. The majority of the path Nolin River follows is located within the boundaries of Mammoth Cave National Park, making it very scenic and some of the best canoeing in Kentucky. Enjoy boating, camping, fishing, picnicking, water sports and wildlife viewing. Located across Breckinridge, Hardin, and Grayson counties in south central Kentucky. The 5,100-acre reservoir provides a wide variety of outdoor recreational opportunities. Rough River Lake provides anglers with great bass fishing, including largemouth, smallmouth and hybrid striped bass. An average of eleven bass tournaments are held on this lake annually, and Rough River Lake consistently ranks in the top five lakes for producing the heaviest average first-place weight of bass caught during a standard eight-hour tournament.

Interested in trying your fishing skills against others anglers? There are hundreds of fishing tournments held across the state all year. Fishermen compete for prizes based on the total weight of a given species of fish caught within a predetermined time. Other competitions are based purely on length with mandatory catch and release. Either longest fish or total length is documented with a camera and a mandatory sticker or unique item, a practice used since it is hard to weigh a living fish accurately in a boat. Rules vary for tournments and groups participating or sponsoring. For a complete tournament schedule, rules and contact information visit the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildfile Resources website: Site offers information on all outdoor hunting, fishing activities, summer camps, and purchasing a fishing/hunting license. 18

In 1999, the Kentucky Distillers’ Association formed the Kentucky Bourbon Trail® tour to give visitors a firsthand look at the art and science of crafting Bourbon and to educate them about the rich history and proud tradition of Kentucky’s signature spirit. It began in the 1700s with the first settlers of Kentucky. Like most farmers and frontiersmen, they found that getting crops to market over narrow trails and steep mountains was a daunting task. They soon learned that converting corn and other grains to whiskey made them easily transportable, prevented the excess grain from simply rotting, and gave them some welcome diversion from the rough life of the frontier. Since then, generations of Kentuckians have continued the heritage and timehonored tradition of making fine Bourbon, unchanged from the process used by their ancestors centuries before. So how did it get the name Bourbon? Well, one of Kentucky’s original counties was Bourbon County, established in 1785 when Kentucky was still part of Virginia. Farmers shipped their whiskey in oak barrels — stamped from Bourbon County — down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers to New Orleans. The long trip aged the whiskey, with the oak wood giving it the distinct mellow flavor and amber color. Pretty soon, whiskey from Bourbon County grew in popularity and became known as Bourbon whiskey. In 1964, Congress officially recognized Bourbon’s place in America’s history — and its future — by declaring it a distinctive product of the United States, “America’s Official Native Spirit.” Today, Bourbon is a signature industry that helps create 9,000 jobs, generates more than $125 million in tax revenue each year, and is a growing international symbol of Kentucky craftsmanship and tradition. Bourbon tourism is skyrocketing, too, with nearly 2.5 million visitors from all 50 states and 25 countries to the world-famous Kentucky Bourbon Trail® tour in the last five years alone. 2995 Lincoln Farm Road Hodgenville, KY 42748

(270) 358-3137 Built on the knoll above the sinking spring where many believe the Lincoln cabin originally stood, the Memorial Building at Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park was constructed between 1909-1911 in an effort by the Lincoln Farm Association to commemorate the life and accomplishments of the 16th president of the United States and to protect his “birth cabin.” Rooted in the architectural forms of ancient Greece and Rome, the Beaux-Arts Memorial Building was designed by early twentieth century prominent architect John Russell Pope and constructed of Connecticut pink granite and Tennessee marble. Pope’s design of the building included many symbols related to Lincoln, including 56 steps leading up to the building to represent the 56 years of Lincoln’s life. Sixteen windows in the building and 16 rosettes on the interior ceiling are there to remind visitors that Lincoln was the 16th president. In 1906, the Lincoln Farm Association began a fundraising campaign for the project in which over 100,000 Americans donated nearly $350,000. The Norcross Brothers Construction Company of Worcester, Massachusetts, won the contract for constructing the Memorial Building in 1907 with a bid of $237,101 and construction began on February 12, 1909, the centennial of Abraham Lincoln’s birth, with the laying of the cornerstone by President Theodore Roosevelt. After over two years of construction, president and Lincoln Farm Association board member William Howard Taft dedicated the Memorial Building and enshrined “birth cabin” on November 9, 1911, before a crowd of 3,000 people. Today, the building continues to fulfill its mission. Over 200,000 people a year come to Lincoln’s birthplace to view the Memorial Building and the enshrined “symbolic” birth cabin contained within. PINE KNOB THEATRE

Join Us for Our 32nd Season Opening June 16 featuring “ROCKIN’ TERRY LEE” from London, England! Lots of Fun for the Whole Family!

Voted Top 3 BEST COMMUNITY THEATRES IN KENTUCKY by Kentucky Living Magazine

A short 45 minute drive up the back roads of Highway 185 north of Bowling Green will take you to one of the most complete historic communities in Kentucky with hiking trails, scenic caves, historic buildings, picnic grounds and one of the nation’s outdoor theatres. The historic community of Pine Knob, just 5 miles north of Caneyville, Kentucky, is a good place to visit on a weekend road trip, complete with a 50’s Diner, the old country store built in 1939; the old 4-room Pine Knob School, built in 1925; the 120+ year old Primitive Baptist Church; the Stinson House built in 1865; creeks for kids to wade; springs to quench the thirst; hiking trails up rugged old Pine Knob; and plays presented each Friday and Saturday evening at 7:30pm from June through September. Since 1987, five different productions have been performed during the summer, including Dock Brown - Legend of an Outlaw, Down in Hoodoo Holler, Lucy and Ruth’s Diner, Daddy Took the T-Bird Away, and Bee Bop a Lula. The shows are both historic and folklore as well as musically entertaining with Doo-wop and Bebop music. The Pine Knob Theatre cast not only performs during the summer at Pine Knob, but they also perform at many fine arts centers - including the Riverpark Center in Owensboro, the Henderson Fine Arts Center in Henderson, and the Alhambra Theatre in Hopkinsville - during the fall and winter months. This beautiful spring-fed valley is very scenic, and a number of weddings are performed there each summer as well as family reunions, picnics, and photographers taking pictures of the wonderful scenery it’s truly one of Kentucky’s little hidden treasures!
