Once you’re there it feels like another world entirely and makes for a perfect day trip or a relaxing longer stay. Rottnest was originally occupied by the Indigenous people of the Nyoongar Tribe up to 6,500 years ago. The Island has been made use of in many ways since the arrival of European settlers, including as an Aboriginal penal colony. Prisoners who were kept there from 1838 to 1904 are responsible for the construction of many of the buildings on the island, including the lighthouse. Rottnest is surrounded by beaches and bays, popular for snorkelling, scuba diving, surfing and swimming. Whale and dolphin watching are also popular experiences during the migration season. Rottnest is home to an array of flora and fauna, including everyone’s favourite (and protected) furry little creature, the quokka. The most popular way to see Rottnest is by bicycle, as the island is almost traffic-free. There is a good variety of accommodation available and the lack of vehicles on the island enhances its peaceful and relaxed lifestyle. rottnestisland.com From top: Perth Arena; Rottnest Island; Wadjemup Lighthouse, Rottnest Island photos: Tourism WA; The Basin, Rottnest Island Garry Norris Photography

“
...one of the best examples of a Victorian port streetscape in the world...
Fremantle has long been an integral aspect of the Western Australian landscape having been used since 1829 as a port to service the newly established Swan River Colony. ‘Freo’ has retained its migrant-driven cosmopolitan nature and preserved its identity. The working port plays host to cruise ships, a big fishing fleet and container ships. It maintains a vibrant commercial life but at the same time it has retained much of its charm. Old buildings have been painstakingly restored and the West End of town is acclaimed as one of the best examples of a Victorian port streetscape in the world. There’s always something happening: festivals, exhibitions, street performances, markets and concerts. Fremantle is a hub for arts lovers, with local musicians and street performers out to impress the crowds on weekends. And Fremantle doesn’t go to sleep after dark. The bars, pubs and nightclubs that abound are just warming up when the sun goes down.

PERTH BEACHES
“
...Enjoy memorable sunsets, busy cafes, great surfing spots and safe swimming beaches...
“
26
If one aspect of WA were to characterise life in Perth, surely it’s our beaches – those magical places where the Indian Ocean meets the land. The clean, unspoilt white beaches and blue water contrast with the native bush found along the coast and make irresistible gathering points during the summer months for locals and visitors alike. Perth’s beaches extend along a strip of Indian Ocean coastline which stretches from Mandurah in the south, to Fremantle and all the way north to Yanchep, 45 minutes north of Perth. Enjoy memorable sunsets, busy cafes, great surfing spots and safe swimming beaches, all within an easy drive from Perth and Fremantle. Adventure seekers are spoilt for choice with parasailing, jet boating, surfing lessons and whale watching cruises on offer. Whether you plan to surf, swim, jetski, fish, sunbathe or just enjoy a spectacular sunset over the water with fish and chips for dinner, the Indian Ocean should be on your ‘must see’ list.
Your Guide to Perth & Fremantle
COTTESLOE BEACH Just 15 minutes from Perth’s city centre, world-famous Cottesloe Beach sits amongst Norfolk pines and terraced lawns overlooking the Indian Ocean. The clean, clear coastline and manicured lawns ensure it’s bustling during summer and there are plenty of cafes nearby where you can watch the passing action. SCARBOROUGH BEACH and TRIGG ISLAND The area is renowned for cafes as well as great beaches. It is perfect for surfers and is home to some of Perth’s surf schools. The Scarborough-Trigg Heritage Walk celebrates Australia’s Centenary of Federation by highlighting stages and events in the past 100 years of the surrounding area. The walk recognises the Nyoongar people’s prior occupancy and custodianship of this coastal area and includes signposts for historic sites and events, native plants and animals, history of local surf lifesaving and information on past tragedies. The Friends of Trigg Bushland group conducts guided nature walks through the reserve. For more information, including a walk map, visit stirling.wa.gov.au CITY BEACH and SWANBOURNE Popular with locals, it has an expansive grassed area that is perfect for picnics close to the beach and it’s a good place to seek out local sporting teams training in the off season. Swanbourne Beach offers a reasonably safe swimming beach with the biggest danger being the short break which can develop with strong onshore winds. Popular with nudists! NORTHERN BEACHES Head north of the city to explore the coastal suburbs of Mullalloo, Whitfords, Mindarie, Yanchep, Quinns Rock and Two Rocks. You’ll find cafes, shops and resorts as well as beachside reserves with facilities such as barbecues, childrens’ playgrounds and walking trails. There are dedicated dog beaches, there’s even a beach north of Hillarys where horses and their riders are permitted. SHIPWRECKS Off Two Rocks the coast is dotted with treacherous reefs and the shipwrecks that have come to grief there, making a great location for divers. One of the wrecks is visible from the shore. Good visibility and interesting coral formations make the waters around Perth popular for scuba diving. Local companies operate dive charters and you’ll have no trouble hiring everything you need. MARINE PARKS Marmion and Shoalwater Islands Marine Parks showcase the diverse marine life of the area and gives visitors an opportunity to see bottlenose dolphins, penguins, seals and even humpback whales in season. HILLARYS BOAT HARBOUR Visit Hillarys Boat Harbour, 30 minutes north of Perth. The Harbour is home to AQWA, the Aquarium of WA and a host of great shopping and dining options right out over the water at Sorrento Quay. ROTTNEST ISLAND Located just 18km off Fremantle, a visit to Rottnest is just a ferry trip away although ‘Rotto’ feels like another world entirely. Discover its pristine waters, brilliant beaches and hidden bays during a day excursion, or enjoy a longer stay. Local Aborigines knew the island as ‘Wadjemup’ (place across the water), while Dutch explorers in the 17th century named it ‘Rottenest’, meaning rat’s nest, having mistaken the local marsupials (quokkas) for huge rats. It has served as an Aboriginal penal settlement, a place for salt gathering and processing, and a World War II military installation. Rottnest is popular for snorkelling, scuba diving, surfing and swimming. Many of the sheltered bays are calm enough even for inexperienced swimmers. Rottnest is home to an array of flora and fauna; many birds, reptiles, amphibians and mammals can be spotted on the island, including of course everyone’s favourite friendly (and protected) furry little creature, the quokka. SOUTHERN BEACHES South of Fremantle you’ll find areas of clean and inviting coastline including Coogee Beach and Woodman Point, which offer a variety of activities for boating and fishing enthusiasts. The sparkling waters of Warnbro and Cockburn Sounds which surround Rockingham are ideal for all sorts of aquatic sports including sailing, fishing and water skiing. Fringed with award-winning sandy beaches, these are some of the best stretches of coastline to be found in Australia. PENGUIN ISLAND Just a 5-minute ferry ride off the coast of Rockingham in the crystal clear waters of the Shoalwater Islands Marine Park, the island is home to a large colony of little penguins and other wildlife, and has something special for visitors of all ages. As well as the Penguin Island Discovery Centre there are picnic areas, lookouts and pristine beaches that can be accessed by a network of boardwalks and walkways. MANDURAH A visit to Mandurah can be as busy or relaxing as you like with a variety of activities on offer to suit all tastes. Stroll along the waterfront to one of the numerous cafes and restaurants perched on the water’s edge where you’ll find everything from traditional fresh fish and chips to award winning restaurants, bakeries and bars, or walk to the foreshore parklands for great picnic and barbecue spots overlooking the water. STAY SAFE AT THE BEACH Lifesavers patrol Perth beaches in summer, so always remember to swim between the flags for your safety. Too many holiday-makers get sunburnt, so make sure you protect yourself. When going out into the sun, wear sensible clothing including a hat. Apply SPF30+ sunscreen and try to avoid the midday sun by having lunch indoors or in the shade. The Cancer Council WA stocks a comprehensive range of sun-protection items; visit cancerwa.asn.au for more information. THE SWAN VALLEY
“
...the region houses boutique restaurants, art and craft galleries and beautiful scenery...
Lush green vineyards, vines bursting with grapes, wine, delicious food and other delights are all part of the experience in Perth’s leafy Swan Valley and the region houses boutique restaurants, art and craft galleries and enough beautiful scenery for a thousand postcards. Just 25 minutes from the centre of the city the Swan Valley, with its calendar of festivals and events, is a popular destination all year round. The area was settled in the nineteenth century when farmers found it difficult to find uninhabited land near the banks of the Swan River in the city. Many of the charming old buildings in the area have been retained and refurbished, particularly in Guildford. Drop into the Visitor Centre in Guildford to pick up a Food and Wine Trail map and follow the 32km scenic drive that can direct you to more than 150 attractions. Many Swan Valley businesses are open on weekends but closed on Mondays so be sure to take this into account when planning your visit.

...A great place for picnicking, wildlife spotting and bushwalking anytime of the year....

To the east of Perth you’ll find pristine natural bush, Spring wildflowers, forests, waterfalls and spectacular views. If you’re looking for something a little more ‘man made’ there are art galleries and historic sites to explore, wine trails to follow, restaurants and cafes to cater to every food fantasy, day spas, open-air cinemas and fabulous outdoor concert amphitheatres. Why not give yourself a real break and stay the night in a friendly B&B or self-cater cottage? ARMADALE Located only 30 minutes south east of Perth, Armadale boasts a rich cultural heritage, breathtaking bushland complete with walk trails, a wide range of quality accommodation, boutique wineries, award-winning restaurants, beautiful art galleries and more. You can choose from a variety of activities from a vigorous walk along one of the many bush trails, a scenic drive through the hills, relaxing at one of the many cafes and restaurants, swimming or canoeing. Armadale offers something to suit everyone. Your Guide to Perth & Fremantle
KALAMUNDA 30 minutes east of Perth is Kalamunda; a special ‘home in the forest’ that offers a true country town experience. Here you’ll find a range of unique shops as well as restaurants, cafes, places of historical interest, scenic parks and spectacular vistas. Kalamunda is home to the northern terminus of the Bibbulmun Track, a long-distance world class walking track, sprawling 965km to Albany. BICKLEY VALLEY Just 30 minutes from the Perth CBD you can explore boutique wineries, cafes and restaurants along the Bickley and Carmel Wine Trail to find hand crafted award-winning wines, a cidery, organic chocolates, jarrah honey, fresh flowers and a range of fresh fruit and vegetables. MUNDARING Mundaring is a haven for cyclists and bushwalkers with recreational sites, a campground with facilities for families and disabled people, as well as lookouts offering panoramic views over Mundaring Weir. Wildlife found in the park includes chuditch (western quoll), the quenda (southern brown bandicoot), common bushtail possum, short-beaked echidna, western grey kangaroo and the western brush wallaby. The Munda Biddi Trail, a cycle trail that runs approximately 1,000km from Perth to Albany, runs through the park, meandering through river valleys and magnificent eucalypt forests. JOHN FORREST NATIONAL PARK First established in 1898, this park provides magnificent views and contains a variety of walk trails and spectacular winter waterfalls. It’s a great place for picnicking, wildlife spotting and bushwalking anytime of the year. Spring wildflowers such as native orchids are a drawcard and you may see lizards and western bearded dragons basking in the sun, and honey possums and western pygmy possums in the bush. Some paths are suitable for disabled access and cycling is permitted on approved trails. GETTING AROUND
“
...Many popular destinations can be accessed via the CircleRoute buses ....

DRIVING LAWS In Australia we drive on the left hand side of the road. Seat belts must, by law, be worn by all persons travelling in a motor vehicle. Posted speed limits must be adhered to. The speed limit in Perth city and suburbs is 50km/hr unless otherwise signed; major arterial roads are generally 60km/hr and the upper limit in country areas is 110km/hr. Speed cameras are used throughout the state. The maximum speed for towing a vehicle is 100 km/h. Western Australia has drink driving laws (the blood alcohol limit in WA is .05) as well as laws against the use of drugs that impair driver skills such as cannabis, amphetamines and ecstasy. These laws are rigidly enforced by an efficient police force equipped with modern, sophisticated radar devices and mobile alcohol and drug detection facilities. In Australia it is illegal to use a mobile phone whilst driving as distracted drivers can be dangerous. Use a hands-free phone if you have to take a call or, better yet, pull over and stop the car. Your Guide to Perth & Fremantle
ROAD SIGNS In Australia distances on road signs are indicated in kilometres. Roads through areas of significant historic or scenic interest are indicated by white on brown Tourist Drive markers. RENTAL CARS WA has a range of rental vehicles at competitive rates. You will need a valid Australian or international drivers license (in English). PARKING There is limited street parking with the Perth CBD, but there are many outdoor or multi-storey car parks to be found. Clearways are key roads that have been designated as 'no stopping' zones during specific times of the day to help traffic flow freely and safely. They are marked by a special roadside sign that state the times that Clearways operate. Cars parked in these ‘no stopping’ zones may be towed away at the owner’s expense. Do not park in clearly marked bays that are reserved for people with disabilities. Reciprocal disability parking rights exist for interstate and overseas visitors for up to three months; for more information or to apply for an Acrod permit visit National Disability Services at www.nds.org.au PETROL Many service stations in Perth are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and most stock unleaded fuel, gas and diesel. If you are travelling to the country, it is advisable to check how far you are likely to drive between petrol stations, as they can be up to 500km apart. BUSES Perth’s city and suburbs are well connected by buses. The main terminals currently are Roe Street Bus Station and the Elizabeth Quay Busport. Many popular destinations can be accessed via the CircleRoute buses including shopping centres, all universities and major hospitals. Tickets can be used on Transperth ferries and trains. TRAINS The Perth Railway Station is located on Wellington Street and connects to stations for the Joondalup and Mandurah lines. Travel from Perth to Fremantle, Midland or Joondalup takes around half an hour; to Armadale takes around 40 minutes; and to Mandurah takes less than an hour. Services are reduced but regular on weekends and public holidays. You must have a valid ticket to travel. Tickets can be purchased from machines on train station platforms. DayRider and FamilyRider are cost-saving cash tickets that may be useful for visitors to Perth. A SmartRider card is a cash-free way to use public transport, providing cheaper fares on buses and trains. Information on SmartRiders, bus and train routes and timetables can be obtained from major bus and train stations, or contact Transperth on 13 62 13 for information. Use the Transperth journey planner to find the best route; visit www.transperth.wa.gov.au FERRIES Transperth ferries operate throughout the day between Elizabeth Quay, Perth and Mends Street Jetty, South Perth. The Perth Zoo and the South Perth cafe strip are within a short stroll of the Mends Street Jetty. Private operators run cruises on the beautiful Swan River, with destinations including the Swan Valley, Fremantle and Rottnest Island. The main departure points are Barrack Street Jetty, Perth; Fremantle and Hillarys Boat Harbour. VISITORS WITH DISABILITIES Transperth staff are available to assist wheelchair users to access trains. All CAT and CircleRoute buses are accessible, as are any buses displaying the blue wheelchair symbol. For further information, call Transperth on 13 62 13. Taxi services catering for wheelchairs can be booked, phone 13 62 94. A special taxi service for passengers with disabilities can be booked on 9422 2240. This service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It is recommended that you book 24 hours in advance.

Built in 1937, London Court is one of Perth’s best loved heritage listed shopping destinations. Captured in the setting of Tudor England, the court links Hay Street Mall and St Georges Terrace. ...Locally produced Barramundi, tiger prawns, and delicately flavoured marron (freshwater crayfish)....
Perth is fast becoming a foodies’ paradise with restaurants offering contemporary choices and taking great pride in putting Western Australia ‘on a plate’. With the variety of dining options across the city we’re sure you won’t be disappointed for choice. Enjoy locally-produced seafood with a variety of specialty dishes including barramundi, tiger prawns, and the delicately flavoured marron (freshwater crayfish). Mouthwatering steaks are a speciality of many local restaurants, particularly those using beef and lamb from WA’s south west, and will tempt all but the vegetarians who are well catered for both in specialty restaurants and with varied menu choices at mainstream venues. The cosmopolitan population of Perth ensures that international styles of food are created authentically in many restaurants. You’ll find cuisines such as Vietnamese, Indonesian, Japanese, Thai, Indian and Korean to Middle Eastern, African and a range of Mediterranean styles.

ANCIENT BEGINNINGS Australia’s first inhabitants were Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders. They are believed to have arrived in migratory waves from south east Asia between 40,000 and 150,000 years ago, making Australia one of the oldest continents in the world both geologically and in terms of continuous human history. Indigenous people now make up only 1.5 per cent of Australia’s total population, with approximately two thirds living in cities and towns and the balance living in rural and remote areas. Some of these people still maintain a traditional way of life. Nyoongar people are the original inhabitants of south western Australia. Traditional hunter-gatherers, they enjoyed the abundant food and water found along the coastal plain. Conservationists by nature, they took only what they needed to survive and had a high regard for life and the land. Indigenous Australians believed that their ancestors created the land and were ‘great spirits of the dreaming’ who controlled the movements of the planets and stars, the seasons and the tides. Aboriginal law and custom evolved from the myths that grew up around these ancestor figures. They also believed that the process of telling these myths whether in dance, song or painting enabled them to draw on the power and influence of their ancestral spirits. In a culture which has no written language their very distinctive art form, which reflects a deep connection with the land and the environment, evolved over many millennia to record the beliefs and stories from the ‘Dreaming’, enabling them to be passed on to successive generations. Indigenous Australians are fighting for respect and equality and for recognition as being the oldest living culture in the world. Public awareness of the process of reconciliation has increased significantly in the last decade and all sectors of society are adopting measures to help us all live together more harmoniously. EUROPEAN SETTLEMENT IN WA The first recorded sighting of Western Australia by Europeans was in October 1616, when the Dutch navigator Dirk Hartog landed at Shark Bay near Carnarvon. 76
Your Guide to Perth & Fremantle
British authorities settled at the Swan River in 1828 and on May 2, 1829 ‘HMS Challenger’ commander Captain Charles Fremantle raised the British flag at the head of the Swan River and took possession of the territory. Captain James Stirling arrived on his ship ‘Parmelia’ and, with settlers in tow, founded Perth at a site near the present town hall on August 12, 1829. The Swan River colony experienced initial difficulties including a shortage of labour, financial problems and poor communication. To cope with such problems the British Government sent convicts to Western Australia from 1850 to 1868 to assist with development. The discovery of gold in the 1890s resulted in incredible growth and necessitated the undertaking of many major public works. In 1901 Federation transformed Western Australia from a colony to a state of the Commonwealth of Australia with Perth the designated capital city. PERTH TODAY Perth is home to almost 2 million people, making it Australia’s fourth largest city. It is the capital of resourcerich Western Australia and, as such, the administrative centre for more than one third of the country. Many multinational mining companies have their headquarters here and the workforce is drawn from all over the world. Its proximity to Asia has fostered opportunities for investment in not only mining, but health, education, agriculture and tourism resulting in a multicultural society that enjoys an enviable standard of living. Visitors commonly refer to Perth as the ‘friendly city’ and famous notables have also renamed the city after their personal experiences. Astronaut John Glenn called Perth the ‘City of Lights’ after his historic fly-over in 1962 and victorious America’s Cup skipper Dennis Connor referred to it as the ‘most isolated city in the world’. Most people find Perth bright, fun, friendly and ‘laid back’ (relaxing) but visitors are sure to find their own descriptions after their holiday.
