Our services aim to HELP individuals build resilience and create and expand meaningful connections with family, community and employers through: Health and Wellbeing – Psychology, social activities and programs, sporting activities and programs and service initiatives. This includes individuals and their families from the; Australian Federal Police, Australian Border Force, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and other security agencies. Securing and protecting Australia in complex environments, domestically and globally, requires integrated multiagency and multidisciplinary teams of national security agency service personnel to work side by side, both on and offshore, and this should be no different at home. We support those who serve today, tomorrow and into the future. To support Soldier On, please head to our website at SOLDIERON.ORG.AU

Soldier On Update 2019 is going to be a massive year for Soldier On as we continue our mission to work side by side with veterans and their families to build bright and successful futures.

L

ast year saw the Soldier On services and programs grow significantly, which has allowed us to support more veterans and their family members in more locations. As I write this, we are supporting over 2500 veterans in a range of different ways. The Soldier On team are always looking to improve and evolve the services we provide to ensure they are relevant and best meet the unique and diverse needs of our participants.

chosen careers. It was an extremely powerful night and we look forward to hosting our second gala dinner later in 2019.

Our Vet Connect and Family Ties programs continue to provide veterans and their families with opportunities to reconnect and work through some of the issues they are facing under the guidance and education of Soldier On staff and external facilitators. In addition, our Serving On veteran volunteering program allows our participants to give back and serve others in their communities.

In the lead up to the Centenary of Armistice; Soldier On recognised the contribution that veterans and their families have made, and continue to make, to Australia by conducting our first Stronger Together campaign. Thousands of people came together on the 9th of November to help set a new world record for the greatest number of arm wrestles ever conducted in one day and to raise much needed funds for Soldier On. We saw parents arm wrestling their kids, teachers taking on their students and even the Prime Minister going toe to toe with Sharks Legend Paul Gallen on a day that proved that we are indeed all Stronger Together! Soldier On is looking forward to conducting a bigger and better Stronger Together 2019 campaign in early November.

The Pathways Employment and Education program continues to be extremely successful with more companies and education providers coming on board every day. The employment options that are available to our Pathways participants have never been more diverse. There are challenging and rewarding careers available across more than 135 veteran friendly workplaces as part of the program. Almost every day, I learn about another successful career placement and I look forward to hearing about many more as we continue to fine tune the program throughout the year.

I have only scratched the surface of what the Soldier On family has been able to achieve over the last few months and I can’t wait to welcome many more new faces into our family this year! On a personal note, I am honoured to have been selected to be the CEO of Soldier On. I look forward to following in the footsteps of the amazing Soldier On Co-Founders John Bale and Dr Danielle Clout and will do everything in my power to ensure Soldier On continues to serve our veterans, and their families, in the best way possible.

A highlight of 2018 was undoubtably the Soldier On team having the privilege to attend several events alongside thousands of passionate supporters from all over the world at the Invictus Games. I was extremely proud to see ambassadors and friends of Soldier On competing in these events. They all gave everything they had to represent their mates and their country. In November, Soldier On hosted our first gala dinner in Melbourne alongside our long-time friends and supporters from the St Kilda Football Club. It was wonderful to be able to tell the Soldier On story to a Victorian audience. Soldier On ambassador Mick Malloy hosted the evening and our key note speakers John Shanahan, Sam Fisher and Sally Kehoe discussed the common challenges that veterans and elite sports people face when transitioning away from their

Sporting Partnerships 2019 S

ince Soldier On launched in 2012, its focus has always been, and continues to be, on providing programs and services that improve the lives of current and ex-serving veterans and their families. In doing so, we have developed key sporting partnerships that are integral to delivering our mission. In working with sporting partners, it has also become apparent that many issues experienced by serving and transitioning veterans are similarly experienced by elite and professional sports men and women. We have seen firsthand, the benefits of these two communities working together and the instant connections they make in supporting one another. We have witnessed significant changes in our participants because of the experiences they have had with one of our sporting partners. We are happy to announce Soldier On’s renewed partnership with three major sporting clubs for their 2019 season; the GWS Giants, St Kilda FC, and the Wests Tigers. These clubs have supported our participants in the past with access to games, training clinics (for participants and children), meet and greet opportunities and guards of honour just to name a few. Furthermore, they have assisted our fundraising efforts in a variety of ways through fan days and gameday activations. We are also delighted to announce that as part of our relationship some players have

6

committed to become Sport Ambassadors for Soldier On. These new sporting ambassadors include: Luke Garner (Wests Tigers), Phil Davis and Dawson Simpson (GWS GIANTS), Jack Steele and Nathan Brown (St Kilda FC) from the AFL.

“We are also delighted to announce that as part of our relationship some players have committed to become Sport Ambassadors for Soldier On.”

Fan and Members Day for the Sydney Clubs in February were attended by Soldier On staff, including CEO Mat Jones, Service Ambassadors and participants eager to spread the awareness of how Soldier On supports veterans and their families. Both events allowed our participants to meet players, and for our new Sport Ambassadors to engage for the first time with members of the Soldier On team. Our Salute to Summer BBQ campaign was supported by BBQs at the GIANTS ground – with Phil and Dawson cooking a breakfast for players and staff. St Kilda FC hosted a BBQ during their RSEA Intra Club match day at their new facility at Moorabbin. We thank our sporting partners for engaging in and communicating information about our services via our campaigns to their fan and membership bases, and for providing us with signed merchandise to use as auction prizes which this year may include a signed ANZAC round game ball. We are stronger together!

Let’s welcome the new Sport Ambassadors to Soldier On! Luke Garner - Forward for the Wests Tigers Luke Garner is one of the youngest and newest players at Wests Tigers, with his first-grade debut against the St.

George-Illawarra Dragons in 2018. Luke played only six games in total in his rookie season, but is looking forward to playing a full season in 2019.

enlist in the Army. His enrolment was put on hold after being invited by the Murray Bushrangers (an AFL team playing in the TAC Cup) to train with them.

Luke attributes his decision to become an Ambassador for Solider On to his grandfather, who served for 13 years with the Australian Navy, and to his parents who served in the Queensland Police Force. Luke has always been very proud that his grandfather served in the Navy and is honoured to become an ambassador to use his platform to “continue to raise awareness, support and give back to returned service men and women, and their families.”

He was originally drafted by the Geelong Cats in 2007 and spent eight seasons at the club, debuting in round three of 2010, against Fremantle at Subiaco.

Phil Davis – Co-Captain of the GWS Giants

Simpson joined the GIANTS as an unrestricted free agent at the end of 2015 and made an impressive debut for the club in 2017. He played nine games in 2018 before a seasonending injury. At the GIANTS fan day our CEO Mat Jones met Dawson and found out just how much of a giant the AFL player truly is!

Canberra-born Phil Davis started playing AFL when he was 10 years old before moving to Adelaide with his family when he was 14. He was recruited by the Adelaide Crows with pick 10 in the 2008 NAB AFL Draft when he was just 18, but didn’t start playing till 2009 due to a shoulder injury. Phil joined the GIANTS in 2012, as an inaugural co-captain. He has been instrumental in the establishment of the AFL’s newest club. When approached to be an ambassador, Phil jumped at the opportunity to, “help support people who support our country and have dedicated their life to it.” This is, in part, due to having at least one family member in the defence force across the last 4 generations. We look forward to working with Phil to raise awareness for the service community.

Serving On Update Since the start of 2018, Serving On projects have been held every month as a way for service personnel to volunteer their time to give back to the Australian community. At the same time this has allowed participants to re-discover the camaraderie of serving alongside a fellow compatriot for a good cause. The Serving On projects have assisted a number of worthy organisations and we would like to share with you what we have been doing:

October - Invictus Games Family Day Project

great harbour city. A big thanks to all those who attended and helped make this a memorable day.

There was excitement in the air when the long awaited Invictus Games arrived in Sydney, especially at Soldier On. This was because we had been invited to help out at the incredible week-long event, to assist with running the Family and Friends “Welcome to Sydney” family day and BBQ. There were 350 family and friends of Invictus competitors from around the world, plus 50 VIP guests in attendance. Its aim was to provide the family and supporters of Invictus competitors with a warm welcome to Sydney with a day out on the Harbour, while their loved ones were rehearsing for the opening ceremony.

War Widows Walk Project

The Serving On team, including veterans and staff, got stuck into the preparation, and smooth running, of the event. The event was well received, and all the families of the competitors got a big hearty welcome to the

SOLDIER ON  autumn 2019

Our second event for October saw us collaborating with The War Widows Guild Australia (WWGA). This amazing organisation was founded in 1945 to teach weaving and other handicrafts to members, to augment their pensions, whilst providing and promoting companionship, counselling, and support for war widows. From this, the WWGA has grown into a lobby group that is still consulted by government on matters concerning War Widows today.

“At the end of the day the team were rewarded with a hearty cheer from the ladies for their efforts.”

Our collaboration with the NSW branch of the WWGA involved assisting with their annual War Widows Walk. This has been held at the Kokoda Track Memorial Walkway since 2002. The Guild organises this event to highlight the physical and mental benefits of improved mobility and promotes

gentle exercise. Over the past few years, the “Walk” has become a “Walk and Picnic”, as some of the older members find it difficult to walk, but still enjoy the day out and spending time with their friends. The Serving On team helped the WWGA by setting up the venue for the day, serving morning tea and lunch, supplying water, aiding with transport arrivals and departures, a friendly ear to listen, and an arm to lean on when it was needed. At the end of the day the team were rewarded with a hearty cheer from the ladies for their efforts and we are sure the volunteers appreciated giving back to those who have lost their partners.

November - Adventist Church Project November’s project was at The Mt Druitt Adventist Church. The Church does tremendous work in an area of Sydney where residents face hardship by offering many different services to the community. This includes a food pantry for those who are struggling and an amazing kitchen for clients to be taught how to cook healthy meals. It is also a warm and welcoming environment for people to come and spend time together.

“With sleeves rolled up, the Serving On team pulled down the old kitchen so renovations could take place.” With sleeves rolled up, the Serving On team pulled down the old kitchen so renovations could take place. They also worked to set up the community vegetable garden, which will include fruit trees. This will allow the Church to grow their own crops in the future. The Pastor greatly appreciated all the help and the volunteers got a lot out of the day knowing that it will allow the church to continue to work and help those in the community secure their futures.

December - Aged care Christmas project For the last project of 2018, the Serving On team joined the residents of The Ponds, an Anglicare aged home residence, to help brighten the village with Christmas decorations #sidebyside

If you’re a veteran or serving member of the Australian Defence Force entry to the Museum is on us

Commonwealth Superannuation Corporation (CSC) has a long history of serving members of the Australian Defence Force. We greatly value and appreciate the commitment and loyal service of our veterans, serving members of the Army, Navy and Air Force, and cadets. As a way of saying thanks, CSC is providing every single Defence Force veteran, serving member and current cadet with a complimentary pass to the Australian National Maritime Museum. If you’re a Defence Force veteran, a serving member, or a current cadet just show the Museum’s front of house team your valid ADF ID card, a DVA-issued card, service medals, or arrive in uniform and you’ll receive free entry to the Museum.

and their presence. Christmas is usually a great time to get together with family and friends to celebrate. However, this can be an extremely lonely time for many people, especially for older generations. Often with no family, they can really struggle. The team did some craft work assembling Christmas decorations and then helped put them up around the village. More importantly, they did a great job interacting with residents who have all had amazing experiences and loved having someone to chat with.

January 2019 Equine Therapy Project For our first project of 2019, the Serving On team came together with the Veterans Equine Welfare Program run by RSL Lifecare. This fantastic program helps veterans living with post-traumatic stress disorder. Communicating with such a powerful yet

gentle animal is a new experience for many veterans, who soon find that the benefits are amazing. Alongside a team from Homes for Heroes, the 10 participants assisted in setting up a new facility in Picton. The weather gods were kind and the cool day started with an opportunity for both teams to experience horses up close and personal and do an introductory horse handling session with an instructor from Racing NSW. The team learned about horse welfare, basic handling, and training principles.

“Communicating with such a powerful yet gentle animal is a new experience for many veterans, who soon find that the benefits are amazing.”

After an excellent BBQ lunch, it was all hands-on-deck to help put up a fence around the property to stop cattle coming in and horses getting out! It was wonderful for the team to give back to another organisation who do such great work for our fellow service members. #sidebyside

Deep Sea Fishing in Port Stephens!

Soldier On participants have once again been able to experience the delights deep sea fishing, thanks to Tim Dean of Calypso Fishing Adventures.

T

he idea of offering deep sea fishing to those in the service community was born six years ago, when Tim was a profession fishman in the Gulf of Mexico. He was near some of the larger coastal US bases and started taking US soldiers out on fishing charters. Whilst there, he connected with the US-based Wounded Warriors program and states that the impact of the volatile environment the US soldiers had faced whilst deployed overseas was “very visible” to him. Tim saw firsthand the positive impact of giving them a ‘day off’ out on the water had on the servicemen and women that he was meeting. On his return to Australia, Tim decided that he would like to offer the same experience to service personnel here and started looking for an organisation to embrace the activity and started to work with Soldier On. Calypso Fishing and Soldier On hosted the first annual Offshore Fishing Adventure in 2015 with 25 participants and eight fishing boats. Since then, the annual Port Stephens Offshore Fishing Adventure has grown exponentially in popularity and size, catering to over 60 ex-service personnel and their families in 2019. Tim engaged up to 20 professional game fishing vessels with independent skippers and crew, making this year’s activity one of the biggest single events supported by Soldier On. With the increase in size, we have had to take on new supporters, which included Paul Lennon of Port Stephens Estuary Charters lending his boats to the fleet. The other organisations that provided support this year include,

“Tim saw firsthand the positive impact of giving them a ‘day off’ out on the water had on the servicemen and women that he was meeting.” D’Albora Marina, Newcastle and Port Stephens Game Fishing Club, Alfabs Mining and Engineering Group. We are incredibly grateful for their support of the service community. “It’s a day out for all those involved. The vets, the family and the boat owners and crew to show support to our returned men and women. The fishing is a team sport and hence brings in the participants to an environment they are used to. The challenges of the weather can sometimes be tough on them but that’s also a big confidence builder once they return to port and “I beat they day mentality” kicks in. Lots of smiles at the end of day BBQ and de-brief.” Tim Dean After arriving in Newcastle on Tuesday from across the country, the participants attended a ‘meet and greet’ evening where they got allocated to a boat and were able to meet their skipper and those they would be out on the water with. The participants also got to meet and talk with CEO Mat Jones, and Andrew ‘ET’ Ettingshausen, former Australian Rugby League Player and host and producer of “Escape with ET”. “The presence of a high-profile celebrity, ET [or Andrew Ettingshausen] and the attendance and genuine conversation with the CEO of Soldier On during the function was an opportunity that we all were very impressed with.” - Participant Wednesday saw everyone up and ‘at em’ at the crack of dawn so they could get out on the water and spend as much time fishing as possible. This saw the various teams working as a team catching marlin, and just enjoying the time away from the stresses and troubles of everyday life on the shore

“This saw the various teams working as a team catching marlin, and just enjoying the time away from the stresses and troubles of everyday life on the shore with family members and new friends.”

with family members and new friends. What made this year’s fishing adventure extra special was a flyover by members of the Royal Australian Air Force based at the RAAF Base Williamtown in fighter jets. After everyone had had their fill of fishing, the various boats headed back to shore, a process which may have included a bit of a race to see who could get back first! Upon return, a BBQ greeted the participants, skippers, and crew members. Thursday saw our participants head back home, with some excellent tales to tell, fond memories to think back on, and stronger relationships with those who went. “I connected well with the crew… as we have similar interests and will go camping, fishing, and hunting in the future. This is extremely important to me as I have a spouse who is in defence and we still post around. No matter your level of fishing experience or engagement, this is a ripping day. Ensure you have travel sickness tablets on hand just in case, and you’ll have an immense amount of fun and social contact. Very relaxed and informal day.” - Participant

The activity is completely free to participants to ensure that cost is not a prohibitive factor for anyone that wants to attend. Soldier On would like to once again thank Tim and his supporting skippers and crew for creating a welcoming and supportive space for Soldier On participants, their families, and mates to experience a ‘day off and day out’ on the water. We would also like to thank Paul Lennon of Port Stephens Estuary Charters, D’Albora Marina, Newcastle and Port Stephens Game Fishing Club, and Alfabs Mining and Engineering Group for ensuring that the activity was the incredible success that it was.

Women of Courage Course

S

oldier On supported a participant to attend Outward Bound Australia’s Women of Courage course in October 2018. This was a unique opportunity specifically tailored for women who have experienced trauma to participate in a five-day wilderness program in Canberra. The Women of Courage program is intended for women who have progressed through their own personal healing and are ready to challenge themselves in a new setting. The course focussed predominantly on increasing selfesteem and self-reliance, building supportive relationships with other women and encouraging a sense of “trying something new”. This could be anything from hiking for the first time, sleeping in the outdoors or trying abseiling, rock climbing and rafting, wilderness hiking expeditions and

personal development sessions. These activities encompass the philosophy of “challenge by choice”. “Can I just say, a huge heartfelt thank you, for giving me the opportunity to attend the ‘Women of Courage’ program, with Outward Bound. If it weren’t for the generous [support] I received through Soldier On, I wouldn’t have been able to partake in this program!! As financially, unaffordable for me to justify for myself...as we so often put ourselves down the ladder of importance!! I’m very grateful for the generosity and the opportunity I was offered. It has had an immediate [and] profound effect on my life!!“ - Participant #sidebyside

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Complex Trauma: Recognising the signs in yourself and others What is it? Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) was first recognised as a mental health condition in the Vietnam War Veterans but was called other terms such as shell shock and battle fatigue. PTSD can develop when you have experienced or witnessed a traumatic event. It can take many months or years after the trauma for PTSD to develop. Whilst it varies from person to person, some of the common signs that you may be struggling with PTSD include: §§ V ivid flashbacks in which it feels like the trauma is happening again §§ Intrusive thoughts and images §§ Nightmares §§ I ntense physical and emotional distress at reminders of the trauma (triggers can include smells, sights, sounds or touch) §§ A lertness and feeling on edge (including finding it hard to sleep or to concentrate; being easily upset or startled) §§ A voiding feelings or memories (including using drugs or alcohol; being unable to express affection; feeling detached and numb; avoiding any reminders of the trauma)

Complex trauma In clinical practice we often find that serving men and women have rarely experienced a single traumatic event that led to PTSD. Often the traumas experienced or witnessed occur over a prolonged period of time. For others, they have experienced traumas dating back to their childhood. Often clients talk about nightmares and flashbacks of a number of real or feared traumatic events. Others feel numb and cut off from their feelings or cannot recall what has happened but then find themselves becoming panicked or angry or crying

and not knowing why. People experiencing complex trauma often struggle to manage their feelings and have difficulties trusting others. This can make it very difficult to attend mental health services, which is one of the reasons we aim to provide a safe space where clients can start to trust others again, piece together what has happened to them and regain their lives.

Secondary trauma Traumatic events do not only impact on the person who has experienced or witnessed it. Secondary trauma refers to the presence of PTSD-like symptoms in those around us, such as family members, who have been indirectly exposed to traumatic events. We are not exactly sure how this works, but secondary trauma can affect the whole family and in recognition of this, Soldier On provides psychology services to family members as well as to our serving men and women. In fact, we offer psychology services to spouses, partners, children, parents or siblings.

Sources of support Soldier On works side by side with clients offering free and confidential clinical psychology and counselling services. We use recommended, evidence-based therapies for PTSD and complex trauma, including trauma focused Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (t-CBT) and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR). We work with clients to tailor treatment to their needs and offer a range of individual, couples, and family therapies. We also encourage clients to connect to family, mates, and community networks as well as other services and activities offered by Soldier On. Education A

t Soldier On, one of the ways in which we help the service community is by providing them with access to education courses. These education courses allow them to re-train for a career outside the Defence Force and National Security Agencies, or to pursue personal goals that they were unable to achieve before. Programs and courses are generally available to immediate family members of service members, but we recommend confirming with an Education Officer as this does vary.

Why is education important? Planning an education pathway can be integral to success in the civilian world. It requires a carefully crafted approach that encompasses the undertaking of qualifications/ certifications that add value and demonstrate currency. Reflecting and assessing current qualifications and skills is the first step to developing a meaningful pathway. Participants, working with Education Officers, can then research new career opportunities and goals, and design a plan to attain them. The process of transition can be a daunting one for service personnel who have been in an environment where they have had a great deal of specific training and, in many cases, positions of responsibility. However, the civilian world is an entirely new ballgame. Skillsets can be largely transferable in the broader sense, however in order to secure roles outside of service, many personnel may find that industry requirements are not the same and they may need to demonstrate new competencies in order to be compliant. It pays to be well prepared with both realistic and achievable educational goals in mind.

How the process works Before enrolling participants in any courses, Soldier On Education Officers engage in a detailed educational session in person or, where the distances are too great, via phone or skype. Some participants may be ready to commit to a

challenging study regime whilst others may just need to try a few short courses to boost their confidence. Taking this individual approach leads to greater educational outcomes. Our officers are available to assist with any issues that arise throughout the duration of the course and liaise with our employment officers to help participants as they begin to look for meaningful employment. “I just wanted to say thank you for all your help, and to say thank you to Soldier On for the opportunities you have provided me with the courses. I understand what an amazing opportunity you have offered as I am hoping to later use the skills I learn to gain a job in the IT industry. I also appreciate the courses that are available to me as it has given me something to strive towards and a reason to look to the future.” - Participant We encourage you to get in contact with the education team if you would like to find out more about how they can assist you in re-skilling by emailing them at: education@soldieron.org.au Soldier On has recently partnered with a number of Education providers. Here’s some words from one of these organisations about why they have partnered with us: Asset College is proud to partner with and support Soldier On. Established in 2006 by Mark Costello, a former member of the Australian Defence Forces who served in the Australia Army. Asset offers over 50 different qualifications suitable for job seekers, career transitions, career development/progression and personal interest. Asset recognises the knowledge and skills developed by Defence members during their service and the value of these skills to the broader public and private sector employers; as well as the positive mental health and other benefits for members that achieve a successful transition from Defence to other employment. Asset offers training /assessment and recognition of prior learning to current and former Defence members as well as employment support through its extensive networks. #sidebyside

Employment S

ince launching the program in 2016, Soldier On has helped numerous people gain meaningful employment. From self-reflection to resume writing and interview techniques, our professional program officers provide those who use our services with the guidance needed to secure their next career. They do this by helping to identify pathways into employment, translate skills, navigate the job market, and supporting individuals through the application process. One such individual is a Victorian participant who contacted Soldier On in November 2017. He had served in the Royal Australian Navy for four years before medically separating. When he contacted Soldier On, he had been unemployed for close to four years. Since engaging with Soldier On, the participant has attended multiple activities and events including family BBQs and the men’s program – VetConnect. He credits the various activities and programs in helping him to regain his confidence to be around the public and preparing him to re-enter the workforce. “[VetConnect] was hugely beneficial…I didn’t think I’d take away as much as I did. I think being around service people in a non-military environment was really powerful…it really helped me feel that everything was going to be ok and that everything was ok…” In May 2018, the participant attended Soldier On’s Pathways Networking Event held at St Kilda Football Club. “I think being around service people in a nonmilitary environment was really powerful… it really helped me feel that everything was going to be ok and that everything was ok…” the help of Soldier On staff, he overcame his nerves and engaged with the various potential employers in the room. Some months later, after completing the VetConnect program, he felt ready to go back to work, in a capacity that would best suit his needs. With the assistance of a Soldier On Employment Officer, he was connected with Sonder Australia, a Soldier On Pledge Company, who remembered him from the Pathways Event. After the interview, the participant was offered a casual position and has recently advised the Victorian team that he is on his way to being promoted to a permanent-part time position. On reflection, he provided this advice, learned through participating in Soldier On programs, “Take one step at a time. Set small, achievable, realistic goals and give yourself a victory whenever you do achieve a small goal. Don’t try to conquer a mountain in one day, take it one step at a time.” The participant will continue to be supported by Soldier On and he, and his family, will remain engaged in activities and events in Victoria.

Family Ties – First VIC weekend The Family Ties program that was run with great success in NSW, has arrived in Victoria! The first weekend of this incredible program saw five families come together for several fun activities as well as communication and teambuilding exercises.

T

he weekend began on the Friday night, with some ice-breaker activities to get to know one another. One such activity involved everyone pretending to be a farm animal, where it was proven that even adults enjoy make believe as much as the kids! The following day was beautiful, with the weather putting on a great show. Those who wished to participate, were able to stretch the legs and go on a mountain bike tour thanks to the wonderful and experienced YMCA staff, where the riders were taught about “bush spinach” amongst other things. The afternoon session saw the families learn the basics of surfing. Once everyone knew which end of the board was the front, the group headed out to put the theory into practice. Some of the group were more successful than the rest, managing to get up on their feet. The rest clung to the board

for dear life. Importantly, everyone was smiling and laughing for the entire activity. The group finished up their afternoon relaxing and realising there were some “experienced engineers” amongst them. Apparently, a small amount of mini marshmallows and raw spaghetti can hold a tennis ball, a thong, and more? Who knew!

“This was a great weekend, where everyone learnt a lot about themselves, each other, other families, and how they interact with those around them.”

The rest of the evening was spent relaxing and spending some time as a family, touring the island, seeing the penguins or going for an ice-cream in Cowes. Sunday morning, everyone woke to drizzling rain, but it certainly wasn’t enough to deter them from hitting the beach for the beach carnival. This saw a tug-of-war, with parents against kids, but who won is a secret that no one will reveal. Afterwards everyone went on a puzzle treasure hunt to solve the greatest mystery of all time and before running some relays across the beach.

Sunday afternoon was spent at the last surfing lesson. This time, even more of the group were able to stand up on their boards! This was a great weekend, where everyone learnt a lot about themselves, each other, other families, and how they interact with those around them. Soldier On looks forward to seeing the adults for weekend two in Melbourne soon and then everyone again for the final weekend. A very big THANK YOU to YCW Camp Committee Patriotic Fund for financially supporting the weekend and to YMCA Phillip Island Coastal Discovery Camp for hosting the activity. The facilities and access to activities were deeply appreciated and those who attended certainly made the most of the weather, the beach, and fresh air. The food was delicious, and the participants left feeling well cared for.

Soldier On has teamed with Kirra Surf Lifesaving Club (KSLC) to offer all Soldier On participants the chance to go through the Bronze Medallion Program, for free! This course awards participants the nationally recognised qualification PUA21012 - Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue). KSLC has a strong affiliation and club base with current serving and ex-serving members involved with training and patrols on the beach. This training is delivered either outside working hours or as a continuous course at the surf club, depending on the participants requirements. Recently three Soldier On participants; Rob, Kris and Jason successfully completed the pilot course just in time to assist on the beaches over the Christmas break. Immediately following their qualification, Rob and Kris placed second in the Point Danger Branch First Aid competition. The Point Danger Branch had 11 Surf Life Saving Clubs participating and this achievement by Rob and Kris means they will be off to compete in the next State Titles. A big thanks goes out to Peter Barry from KSLC who dedicated his time and knowledge to assist fellow veterans across the line in this program.

Taking part in the Veterans Health Week During Veterans Health Week, funded by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, Soldier On locations across the country provided activities for individuals and their families to learn more about nutrition. The Albury office provided participants the opportunity to learn about healthy eating, myths and facts about food and emotional eating through dietetics services Fuel Your Life. All enjoyed many yummy healthy treats and lunch during the day.

Catch and Cook-Part of the Veterans Health Week Individuals and their families sought the opportunity for some fun on Lake Hume with the chance of some kayaking and fishing. The one very little fish caught was certainly not enough to feed everyone, however a delicious BBQ was available which everyone enjoyed. Soldier On arranged the fun activity with Water’s Edge Adventures, a local veteran owned business and this type of activity will certainly be on the calendar again. “Thanks Soldier On this was a great day, it was wonderful to have some time out on the water paddling and fishing and the opportunity to meet others” – Participant

Corporate Rowing regatta Soldier On had two teams enter the 2018 Corporate Rowing Challenge with the Canberra Rowing Club, learning how to row the eights. After training for weeks at the crack of dawn, the day arrived and the 32 Soldier On representatives headed out onto the lake. They were up against a team from the AFP, two teams from the Australian Defence College, as well as a few teams from other organisations. Soldier On teams won medals and wore them proudly at the end of the day. Thank you to everyone involved in making this possible, including the participants.

Veteran’s Health Week Solider On partnered with Nutrition Australia and ran two identical workshops at our ACT Head Office during Veterans Health Week last year. Cadets from the Royal Military College were invited to attend, with the aim that they would learn some basic facts about nutrition, hands-on cooking skills, and meal preparation. Unfortunately, the Fire Brigade did have to attend after the fire alarms went off, but happy to say the food was delicious and now we know that the fire alarms do indeed work.

VIC Activities with St Kilda Football Club Soldier On has recently held a number of activities with our sporting partner, the St Kilda Football Club. In January the two organisations came together to offer children of service families the chance to get outdoors and be active, whilst being taught some AFL skills by the incredible Sam Fox from the St Kilda Community team, in the beautiful surrounds of Princess Park. Afterwards a BBQ lunch was provided to ensure the hungry kids (and adults) were fed before they headed home. The second activity was a ‘Meet and Greet’ at the George A Bishop Reserve in Dromana for our current and ex-serving personnel and their families. It was an incredible opportunity for our attendees to get autographs, photos and have a kick to kick with players Sebastian Ross, Tim Membrey, and Jack Steven, all of whom have won the Trevor Barker Award for Best and Fairest in the last few years. The third activity was a visit to HMAS Cerberus, who are community partners with the St Kilda Football Club. As part of the program, several players ventured down to visit the base for a kick to kick and some training drills followed by a BBQ with over 100 current serving personnel. We’d like to thank the St Kilda Football club and everyone who made these events the huge successes that they were. “January’s footy clinic was a welcomed kid’s activity during the school holidays. Two of our four boys participated, my husband and I relaxed whilst watching the kids try something new. Clinic facilitator Sam was fantastic with the children, teaching them basic ball handling skills & kicking. Our boys had a great time, happy too that they’d met some new friends. At the conclusion we all enjoyed a BBQ lunch and relaxed conversation. Thank-you to the staff at Soldier On Victoria for a fantastic school holiday event, even the weather was great!” - Participant

Children’s Cooking Class Soldier On VIC hosted our first Kids No Bake Cooking Class over the Term 3 school holidays allowing parents to come in and relax whilst their children were busy getting creative in the Parkville centre. The kids had so much fun as they iced and decorated their own biscuits before moving on to creating rocky road and milo balls. The parents took the time to chill out with a cup of coffee or tea and chat in the (thankfully) airconditioned centre. The day was then finished off with healthy salad wraps for lunch. #sidebyside

HMAS Choules – Ship Tours Late last year, around 20 Soldier On participants and family members were lucky enough to be taken on a guided tour of HMAS Choules, which had docked at Station Pier in Port Melbourne, a day before it opened to the wider public. The participants got to go pretty much everywhere, from the Bridge to the sailor’s quarters, from the mess to the deck and everywhere in between. They even got to jump in some of the trucks that were in the ship itself! The HMAS Choules is an incredible ship, weighing 16,000 tonnes, and comes in at 176 metres long and 24 meters wide. It can carry 300 troops, 23 tanks, 150 light trucks and even Black Hawk helicopters! It was incredible to also learn that the docking well in the stern opens and allows the same weight in water in, so that the barge can be released out to reach land. It was a fantastic day and HMAS Choules did not disappoint all those attended! Thanks to Lieutenant Ayden Bauer RAN for reaching out to Soldier On and providing us with this first-hand opportunity to come aboard this active Navy Ship and see what life is like for those who call the HMAS Choules home.

Around the Bay in a Day Soldier On VIC was so fortunate to collaborate with RSL Active in helping build our team for the 2018 Around the Bay Bike Ride which took place on 7th October 2018. It was an amazing day which started at 6.00am and continued right into the evening. Thankfully with daylight savings having started, the last riders came through the finish line whilst it was still daylight. There were three riding distances catering for all abilities - a 50km, 100k or 210km ride around the lovely surrounds of Melbourne and Sorrento. Our participants stood out from the rest of the riders with their fantastic looking Soldier On/RSL Active jerseys. “Please pass on our gratitude to the team at Soldier On for the wonderful experience gained from my daughter and I attending the Around the Bay event. It was a lovely day and after 100km of riding, it certainly was a fantastic experience. My daughter is 13 and it is the furthest ride she, and I, have ever done!” - Participant

SA Updates Our SA team has been kept incredibly busy over the last few months. In January we attended a meeting at the Macclesfield RSL, where The Hon Darren Chester MP discussed veteran’s issues with interested groups and local RSL’s. This was organised by the Federal Member for Mayo, Rebekha Sharkie MP, who also attended. We then cheered on the players of the 2019 ISPS Handa Australian Open at The Grange Golf Club. The Club is a great sponsor for our service community and works with them over numerous golf days, in clinics, providing some great opportunities for veterans and their partners to gain access to one of the most beautiful golf courses in Australia. It was then time to admire some beautiful cars, both classic and vintage. The 10th Annual Classic Car Show for Charity is organised by Gary Carr, who started the car show in his front yard 10 years ago. Now, he receives accolades from enthusiasts for his time, passion, and hard work. Along with volunteers from BAE (who are a major supporter and pledge partner of Soldier On) over $1000 was raised to allow Soldier On to continue to work with the service community in securing their future.

WA

Soldiers & Sirens Shield The second annual Soldiers & Sirens Shield (Ice Hockey) took place on 10th November at Cockburn Ice Arena. While the ADF team was beaten by the Emergency Services Team, they put up a tremendous effort and it was a fantastic game to watch. Massive thanks to Adam & Sarah from All Veterans Events for again hosting the game and we are looking forward to taking home the shield next year. We would like to congratulate the Emergency Services Team and Sirens of Silence for their 2nd Victory!

R U OK Day The Soldier On WA team joined Joint Health Command on RAAF Base Pearce in a 3km run for R U Ok Day to highlight the importance of checking in with your mates. Not only were we met with perfect weather on the day, those running knocked out some incredible times. The WA team looks forward to spending more time with the crew up at RAAF Base Pearce. #sidebyside

Inaugural Match! Pine Hills Baseball Club held the inaugural Army vs Airforce Armed Forces Appreciation Cup with The Pine Hills Lighting representing Army and the Ipswich Musketeers flying the flag for Airforce. The nail-biting match was well attended with Airforce eventually winning the trophy. Soldier On were the Primary Charity Partner with Gaythorne RSL supporting the club. Both Soldier On and Gaythorne RSL look forward to strengthening the ongoing relationship with the Pine Hills Baseball Club and their support of the defence community.

Prince Alfred Hotel Soldier On was the primary charity partner for the Prince Alfred Hotel Fundraiser event in Ipswich and we were thankful to be able to accept the cheque from Peter, the General Manager. The PA Hotel is proud to support the serving and ex-serving community in the area. Peter and the PA Hotel will be holding more amazing fundraising events in 2019 for Soldier On, so watch this space!

NSW Residents of drought-stricken town pull together In regional NSW there is a town where the rivers have literally run dry, and at one point, stage 6 water restrictions were put in place. However, a determined man refused to let this get him down and pulled the residents of the town together for a night of fun and frivolity earlier this year. John Flack, who has been organising trivia nights in Walgett since 2016 to raise money and awareness for Soldier On and the service community, attributes his determination to the need to help others. “Some of the young people coming home from overseas have seen things that no young person should have seen or gone through. And I believe that Soldier On and others are doing the best they can to help with rehabilitation of mind and body.â€? Soldier On, and those we support, are incredibly grateful to the assistance provided by the people and businesses in and around Walgett, especially considering the recent drought conditions that have affected those in NSW and Queensland. We hope to see lots of soaking rains head your way shortly.

Hand-made gifts really are the best! In Laurieton Haven, an incredibly dedicated group came together to put on a Craft Exhibition in support of Soldier On. The Exhibition was officially opened by the local MP, Leslie Williams, who gave wonderful and knowledgeable insight into the organisation to the attendees. Over the next two days, 450 visitors came through the doors to have a look at the incredible range of handmade teddy bears, rugs, clothes, and pillows. The support shown by the visitors was amazing, and the organisers of the event were proud to donate over $5000 to Soldier On.

ACT Car spotting! The Annual “Marques in the Park” premier family car show of Canberra was held at John Knight Park in Belconnen on Remembrance Day last year. Soldier On was chosen as the beneficiary charity for this event and we are deeply grateful to the organisers for this. During the day, our volunteers greeted event attendees as they arrived, oversaw the Soldier On stand, and traversed the grounds to engage with the community, admire the beautiful cars that were there, and gather donations. After the event’s Remembrance service, Soldier On’s Volunteer Coordinator David Hall said a few words about Soldier On’s purpose as an organisation, how they help the veteran and service community, and thanked everyone for their generous donations. Thanks to that genorsity, we were able to raise almost $1,300. Soldier On would like to thank the organisers, the community and the volunteers for making this event a memorable one!

WA After Dusk At The Movies – Burlesque On the 17th of November, After Dusk Entertainment hosted their ‘At The Movies’ Burlesque show at His Majesty’s Theatre in Perth CBD. The show was incredible and all proceeds for the event were donated to Soldier On. We sincerely thank all members of the chorus for donating their time and putting on the show to help us raise awareness within WA!

World Singing Day The team at Aspire Fitness hosted a fantastic concert on the green at the Lake Claremont Public Golf Course late last year. Whilst the weather wasn’t as kind for this event, the turnout was amazing, and everyone had a great time singing along to some absolute classics. Those who attended raised funds for the service community. Soldier On would like to thank everyone who made the event possible, the attendees, and the donors. We couldn’t be more thankful for their support.

True Grit On Saturday 27th October, six staff from the BAE Systems Australia Pearce site headed off to Donnybrook, located 200km south of Perth to participate in the True Grit Challenge on behalf of Soldier On. The comradeship of the participants was highly evident, demonstrated prior to and during the activity. Together they motivated and encouraged each other during the course to cross the finish line together, as the BAE Team. The course is in one of the most picturesque parts of Western Australia’s south west which hid the difficult physical and emotional challenges ahead. The team thoroughly enjoyed the experience and have already started planning for next year’s event, embarking on a recruiting drive to increase participation from the Pearce Site. On behalf of the team, Eric Rivera expressed everyone’s appreciation for the support BAE Systems provided. He went on to say he was proud to represent BAE Systems in support of Soldier On. Eric has been particularly supportive of the good work Solder On does for Australia’s veterans, veteran’s families, and those who have been adversely impacted as a result of service to their nation in a national security capacity. This is the third time Soldier On have been a part of an event of this nature in WA, to raise awareness for the organisation, and we look forward to being a part of True Grit again in 2019.
