CEO Update I have now surpassed 12 months at Soldier On, and I could not be more proud of how Soldier On, with strong leadership and an amazing team, has grown and expanded across Australia, assisting more and more of Australia’s veterans and their family members every day.
S
ince commencing as CEO of Soldier On, together we have lead the organisation to a stable financial position, grown the professional profile of Soldier On within the general public, and have continued to provide our services through the devastating bushfires and the COVID-19 global pandemic of 2020. This has been a challenging year, however the Soldier On team has risen to the challenge and continues to enable veterans and their families to thrive. We have been able to expand our services to Darwin and Tasmania, provide new office spaces in Perth, Darwin, Brisbane, Newcastle, and Albury, we have grown our Health and Wellbeing services and psychology support across Australia, and the Pathways Program continues to expand and grow, thanks to the Department of Veterans’ Affairs ‘Enhanced Employment Support for Veterans’ program. The Pathways Program provides holistic support and case management
throughout the job search and application process. Essential to this program is the Soldier On Pledge. Since the launch of the new Soldier On Pledge in September 2020, companies such as Fujitsu Australia, Babock Australasia, Aero-PM, Saab Australia, Synergy, Serco Asia Pacific, the Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources, and many more have signed up to the Pledge and made their commitment to employing Australia’s veterans and their families, and to creating a veteran friendly workplace. Additionally, as part of the Pathways Program, Soldier On announced a new Education partnership with IBM and launched the new SkillsBuild Platform. This digital platform provides veterans and their families with new, free online learning opportunities in highdemand areas like cyber security and IT. Prime Minister Scott Morrison MP attended the launch alongside Soldier On veteran participants and Ambassadors.
“This has been a challenging year, however the Soldier On team has risen to the challenge and continues to enable veterans and their families to thrive.”
Soldier On is a not-for-profit organisation and it is thanks to the Australian Government and Department of Veterans’ Affairs funding for the Enhanced Employment Support for Veterans Program, corporate sponsors, trusts, philanthropic support, and the generosity of the community that it can provide services to enable veterans and their families to thrive.

Mark Webber joins Soldier On! At Soldier On we are truly grateful for all the support provided by our wonderful celebrity Ambassadors. We are delighted to announce that Mark Webber AO, former professional racing driver, is now a celebrity Ambassador for Soldier On. Mark has always been and continues to be a major supporter of Soldier On and the Australian Veteran community.
I
grew up in Queanbeyan near Canberra which of course has a strong military presence with Royal Military College, Duntroon and the War Memorial. I always had tremendous respect for the men and women who served our country and on my travels around the world for my work, I’ve had the opportunity to visit Gallipoli and the war-graves in northern France which were both very moving experiences for me. So, given the high level of respect I have, it was easy for me to accept the invitation to become an ambassador for Solider On. If, in any way, I can bring support and raise awareness for our military veterans, I’m very happy to do so, and I look forward to meeting some of them when I’m back in Australia. I’ve been in the position to work relatively closely with veterans who served in the Special Forces in the UK. It has been a tremendous education process for me and one that I get the greatest fulfilment out of it. I have seen at first hand the varying challenges that can come with re-entering civilian life.
We are thrilled to welcome Mark on board! #sidebyside

SOLDIER ON Summer 2020
S Soldier On facilitated a new Serving On Project in Yeppoon, North QLD with four ESO’s collaborating together to build and maintain services at the Cockscomb Veteran Retreat.
oldier On’s ‘Serving On’ program was initially piloted in 2018 in NSW to provide our skilled veteran’s an opportunity to engage in meaningful volunteer work in their local community. It’s also a chance to engage with other veteran’s in the way they do best which is working on projects together. Through DVA's Veteran and Community Grant, Soldier On has delivered its first Serving On project in QLD in 2020. Teaming up with Brisbane’s local DRA (Disaster Relief Australia team; formerly Team Rubicon) allowed both Veteran organisations to work collaboratively on a project for the first time. Cockscomb Veteran Retreat near Yeppoon had requested some assistance with general maintenance of the acreage property and assistance with their upgrades

to the accommodation. This was chosen as Soldier On’s first QLD project as a way to bring young veteran’s to the facility to promote the accommodation and retreat which is available to all veteran’s and their families to experience a get-away within the peace and quiet of the bush. Several projects were completed using DRA’s expertise in disaster management, including flood-proofing areas, building a retraining wall for a porch area, fencing maintenance, chainsaw of fallen trees to create logs for the fire pit and aerial mapping of the property using drones. Soldier On provided several staff, volunteers and participants who were quickly put to work within the DRA teams. The local Rockhampton area Young Veteran’s association came along and pitched in with the project. Having Soldier On, DRA

and Young Veteran’s all working alongside together at the Vietnam Veteran established retreat was a show of the true spirit of collaboration. The Vietnam Veterans who built the retreat in 1997 shared many stories over the fire and a drink at night time, explaining the building and vision of the property and their heartful handover of the property to the young veteran population, so they too can connect with mateship, the peace of nature for their mental health and well-being The nearby township of Yeppoon 20kms away is a beautiful seaside town and Emu Park boasts and impressive war memorial along the Esplanade and is well worth a stroll. The project coincided with ‘RUOK’ day on 10th September. This initiative encourages everyone to ask a mate, ‘are you okay?’, to start these conversations and check in on your mates. Many a conversation was shared this weekend and many more will be ahead with the friendships and networks made.

What Is
Social Connection? When researchers refer to the concept of social connection, they mean the feeling that you belong to a group and generally feel close to other people. Scientific evidence strongly suggests that this is a core psychological need, essential to feeling satisfied with your life.
I
ndeed, humans are a profoundly social species; our drive to connect with others is embedded in our biology and evolutionary history. It begins at birth, in our relationship with our caregiver—and the effects of this relationship seem to reverberate throughout our lives. When we’re cared for as children, we’re more likely to have healthy, secure attachments as we get older.
https://www.psychologytoday.com/ au/blog/feeling-it/202003/socialconnection-boosts-health-evenwhen-youre-isolated
What’s more, the pleasures of social life register in our brains much the same way physical pleasure does, and our knack for social connection is reflected in some of the most basic ways humans communicate—by subtle uses of our voice, facial expressions, and sense of touch. Scientists believe we are essentially wired to connect with other people because natural selection favored humans with a stronger propensity to care for their offspring and organize into groups.
https://www.theatlantic.com/ health/archive/2013/10/socialconnection-makes-a-betterbrain/280934/
“To the extent that we can characterize evolution as designing our modern brains, this is what our brains were wired for: reaching out to and interacting with others,” writes neuroscientist Matthew Lieberman in his book Social: Why Our Brains Are Wired to Connect. “These social adaptations are central to making us the most successful species on earth.”

“I was initially interested in the Pathways program for my husband as he was exploring options for his future. After becoming redundant during COVID I then reached out to use the services for myself. The Pathways team has supported me in finding education providers for upskilling to meet the market, getting my resume up to scratch and just generally supporting me in the ups and downs of the job search process. Support of Defence partners is of the upmost importance as often balancing family life and priorities becomes the reason defence members leave defence life. If partners can be more supported with employment through the continual changes and challenges that defence life brings this can offer a real lifeline to family members.

SOLDIER ON Summer 2020
Leaving the Australian Defence Force, Annaleise was looking ahead and considering her future career pathway. She contacted Soldier On’s Pathways team for advice during her jobsearch.
A
nnaleise joined the Royal Australian Navy in 2013, with aspirations to see the world. Working onboard warships as a Communications and Information Systems Sailor she developed high-level skills in managing and operating complex communication systems. After 6 years of service Annaleise decided it was time for a career change. “Leaving Defence can be overwhelming, especially if you’ve been in for a long time. You can really lose your confidence, even a telephone job interview seems really hard,” explains Annaleise. Navigating the unchartered waters of civilian life after leaving the familiarity of the Defence Force can be challenging. That’s where the Soldier On Pathways team helps out. Providing Veterans and their family members with employment and education support, as part of Soldier On’s holistic support services, which enables them to secure their future careers. Annaleise was supported by one of Soldier On’s Pathways Officers, John, who helped her to update her resume, assisted her with job interview practice, introduced her to potential employers and gave her moral support. This enabled Annaleise to translate her military skills for the civilian workforce.

The innovative IT company is a prime example of a professional veteran employer striving to ensure successful veteran transitions into the civilian workforce. Think Technology Australia has an extensive Wellness Program available to all employees. The program includes a weekly session with an in-house counsellor and team coach, to help combat stress. The organisation also encourages employees to undertake further education and training, and to give back to the community when they can, for example through blood donations.
“The Pathways Program actively forwarded my resume on to people and were very pro-active about finding me a job. John sent my resume to Think Technology Australia and that morning I got a call. I had an interview a few days later and by Friday I’d got the job offer!”
What Annaleise hadn’t realised, was that throughout her ADF career she had been building up a strong professional skillset, setting the foundations for success in her future civilian career. “The Pathways Program actively forwarded my resume on to people and were very pro-active about finding me a job. John sent my resume to Think Technology Australia and that morning I got a call. I had an interview a few days later and by Friday I’d got the job offer!” Australia’s Defence Force Veterans have an incredible wealth of skills, including strong leadership skills, teamwork and valuable experience. This is something that Soldier On and veteran-supportive organisations like Think Technology Australia, recognise and embrace. Mungo Bright, Business Manager of dynamic IT solutions company, Think Technology Australia, knows first-hand about the valuable skills Veterans acquire, having served as an Infantry Soldier in the Australian Defence Force for over 4 years. “The strength of Think Technology Australia relies on the strength of our people. We provide a positive, supportive environment for our team to succeed. We try to employ ex-Defence members when we can. We recognise the highlevel skills acquired in the Defence Force, which includes a
Many of Think Technology Australia’s core values align with those in Defence including professionalism and the spirit of mateship, as Mungo Bright explains: “What I like most about working with Soldier On is being able to give something back, help mates out and to be in touch with highly skilled potential employees that might suit the roles we are recruiting for.”
Annaleise is a highly valued member of the team at Think Technology Australia, where she’s thriving in a dynamic IT specialist role; “I’ve been at Think Technology Australia for 9 months. It’s a very cohesive workplace, the best thing about working here is that they really listen to you and value your ideas.” Business Manager, Mungo Bright truly values what Annaleise brings to the organisation; “Annaleise is a fantastic member of our team, she is very personable and great with our clients, she genuinely cares, which makes her stand out and she has a very strong work ethic. Give her a job and she gets it done well and on time.” Annaleise counts herself lucky to have heard about Soldier On through a friend. “It was amazing to have that advice and support. It’s quite overwhelming leaving Defence, but there are people out there willing to help you, you’re not on your own. Just reach out to Soldier On, make that first step.”

New veteran mentoring pilot program underway A new Soldier On pilot program which connects veterans with senior industry professionals has launched, in collaboration with Sage Saving Heroes.
S
oldier On, in partnership with Sage Serving Heroes, has launched a new pilot career mentoring program designed to help veterans thrive in their post-service career. The mentoring program forms part of Soldier On’s Pathways Program which provides employment transition and education support to veterans and their families, in collaboration with veteran-supportive organisations. Pathways Program Director, Prudence Slaughter commented; “Soldier On is delighted to announce the start of a new pilot mentoring program in partnership with Sage Serving Heroes. We hope that the pilot project will help enable veterans and their family members to build confidence in their new role, develop their career and thrive. A big thank you to Sage for helping us to make this happen and assisting Soldier On with funds for the pilot program.”
“Soldier On is delighted to announce the start of a new pilot mentoring program in partnership with Sage Serving Heroes. We hope that the pilot project will help enable veterans and their family members to build confidence in their new role, develop their career and thrive."
The Mentoring Program serves to connect veterans and their families with veteran-supportive organisations to help facilitate a successful transition into civilian life. The scheme connects industry professionals with veterans and family members, for a structured career mentoring program, with the pilot program running over 3 months. The program aims to support veterans as they transition into the civilian workforce, enable career development opportunities and help improve veteran retention in the workplace. Mentors and mentees are matched by Soldier On to maximise career development opportunities and commit to a 3 month program. Mentors meet with their mentee regularly – at least fortnightly for an hour, which enables veterans and their family members to gain valuable advice and assistance and build career confidence. The pilot program has so far linked 11 Mentors with 11 Mentees in 4 different locations in Australia. With the project launching initially in Brisbane, Sydney, Newcastle and Canberra, with plans to provide a national program in future in all states and territories in Australia. The veteran mentoring initiative also actively encourages peer support among veterans in the civilian workplace. Many of the Mentors that have signed up to the new initiative are veterans themselves. Mentors provide support, advice and direction during the employment transition and help build an influential network for the veteran outside of service life, which can lead to an increase in confidence and morale boost for the veteran or family member. rowing your career confidence, learning employment resilience skills and building your professional network in preparation for, or during your transition out of the ADF is critical at this challenging time. Developing skills to enable you to adapt quickly to any challenges during your professional journey, will also help you navigate the current challenging COVID-19 job market and secure your future career faster. If you or your partner has spent their whole career in Defence, with essentially one employer and a professional network and friendships built around that workplace, it can be daunting to start a new career afresh. This is where the Pathways Program can help you and your family members with employment transition support, giving you a ‘hand up’ and enabling you to forge and develop your new career path. Soldier On’s Pathways team will help guide you and connect you with education and employment opportunities as you navigate the practical and emotional complexities of transitioning out of Defence. Many of our staff are veterans themselves or Defence family members, so have a good understanding of the Defence lifestyle and stages of employment transition. Pathways will also link you with others at Prep 4 Pathways networking events and connect you with veteran-friendly organisations and potential employers.

BAE: From One Veteran to Another At BAE Systems Australia we are proud of the men and women who have served our country and are grateful for their sacrifice. This is why we partner with Soldier On to support the health, employment and rehabilitation of Australia’s veterans, service personnel and their families. We are honoured to be the primary supporter of the veteran volunteering program Serving On.
“Having served this great country I am proud to lead a company that is committed to supporting our veterans as they move from service to civilian life”.
S
erving On supports veterans to build skills, resilience and connection through meaningful volunteer work and involves a monthly project in various locations, in collaboration with other community-based organisations. Despite the difficulties Covid-19 has presented, funding provided through our partnership has already enabled the employment of two additional Case Coordinators nationally. As a veteran herself, BAE Systems CEO Gabby Costigan, had this to say about the partnership: In addition to providing support to Solder On, BAE has recently established an internal Veterans Advisory Committee. The committee comprises of veterans and their family members from right across the business who are committed to ensuring that BAE Systems becomes an employer of choice and a supportive workplace for the men and women who have served their country. Soldier On with BAE Systems are creating and supporting a legacy for Australia’s service personnel, veterans and their families. Together we are building better futures for Australians.
“People who have worked in the military bring great skills to a business particularly tenacity, adaptability and problem solving. By providing support, training, skills and experience, we can provide our veterans with the opportunities they need to create a successful future. This makes them a huge asset to any company and we look forward to welcoming more of these highly skilled people to the BAE Systems workforce.” Gabby Costigan #sidebyside

Matched Giving Doubles Donations Soldier On launched its third annual Stronger Together campaign in the lead-up to Remembrance Day, 11 November 2020.
T
he 24-hour unique fundraising initiative in support of Australian contemporary veterans and their families kicked off at 10am 9th November and continued until 10am on Tuesday 10th November when all public donations made to Soldier On were matched by a host of the charity’s corporate partners. On Remembrance Day, the importance of supporting service personnel is at the forefront of the Australian community’s minds. Soldier On’s successful 24-hour Australia-wide campaign has raised much-needed funds to strengthen our services around the country and ensure that all defence families across Australia are supported as best as they can be, especially through the COVID-19 pandemic that has impacted so many of our veterans and their families. Solider On Australia’s CEO, Ivan Slavich, says “It’s no secret that 2020 has been a tough year for all Australians, with the devastating bushfires and the COVID-19 pandemic, we have relied on the support of many of our servicemen and women – and in-turn their families – during these times. Now it’s time for the Australian public to show their gratitude. As a community – Australia needs to come together to ensure that our veterans and their families are adequately supported. They need us to show our support and come together so they’re stronger and stay connected.” Thanks to the generosity of our matchers, the Stronger Together campaign managed to raise $321,617 in total donations.

rainee ADF Medics recently took on a chilly cold shower challenge to raise funds for Soldier On. Mike, one of the participants, says “We were keen to get together as a course with a fun init iative that would allow us to provide a small amount of financial support for an organisation within our defence community. Soldier On was an easy choice as they provide assistance for past and current serving members and their families that are in need. Being the middle of winter down here in Victoria we regretfully decided on a cold shower challenge - 14 days of cold showers, every time hot water was used money was owed to the kitty. It's safe to say, we did raise some money!

Vested for a Cause L
achlan, an ex-serving RAAF avionics technician, and current serving RAAF reservist, had taken on a challenge in his local community of Narrabri in north western NSW, to raise funds and awareness of PTSD in the veteran community. He wore a weighted 15kg vest everyday for an entire month to simulate the unseen mental load that personnel still have to carry with them once returning home. And indeed he did and raised almost $12,000 for Soldier On, which will truly make an impact to the lives of our veterans and their famil ies.

Vet Connect for
WOMEN
Soldier On is very excited to announce that we have been successful in securing funding to be able to run the Vet Connect for Women program in 2021.
B
ased on the format of the hugely successful Vet Connect for Men which was delivered through funding from the Movember Foundation, the Vet Connect for Women program is a series of residential weekends for women to come together in a comfortable and inclusive environment, providing opportunities for social connection, developing new skills and working toward goals for the future. The Vet Connect for Women program is an innovative program designed to address the needs of female veterans transitioning or planning to transition from the defence forces to civilian life. This period in a veteran’s life can be quite distressing and isolating for them. The reintegration and transition from the military lifestyle to a civilian career for family is a substantial adjustment. For female veterans there has been a reported lack of support for female centric issues. Using the format of the successful Vet Connect for Men program this program will ensure that social connection, learning and change can occur. Through a series of residential weekends held across the country this program aims to disrupt the isolation and bridge the gap in veteran services for women by focusing on mental health, social connection, relationship skills, life skills and physical health knowledge.

SOLDIER ON Summer 2020
These residential weekends provide for women veterans, an opportunity to come together in a comfortable and inclusive environment, providing occasions for social connection, developing new skills, and working toward goals for the future. This program will be run in four locations across the country. The Vet Connect programs are both unique and innovative as they focus on a range of social modalities including face to face connection. Despite the popularity of technology for facilitating social engagement, it has been demonstrated that for veterans who have lost the mateship connection, technology does not offer enough to replicate the companionship developed during service. These residential weekends will provide these opportunities for our female veterans.
Ebix Australia Pty Ltd On-demand Insurance Solutions
Program Overview The Vet Connect program consists of three residential weekends conducted over a six-month period focused on the disruption of social isolation, facilitating deeper, more meaningful connections than is possible via technology alone and rebuilding or strengthening family connections. Two of these weekends will be attended by only female veterans and the third weekend is to bring partners and families together with planned family fun activities to strengthen the family relationships. Between the residential weekends, the veterans participate in fortnightly “catch ups” via teleconference and have a facilitated Facebook group.

Soldier On was quick to respond to the implementation of social and physical distancing measures in March with the rapid development and rollout of the Connect Hub support initiative, via the Soldier On website. The goal of Connect Hub is to support participants in meeting and conquering the personal and societal challenges of living through the coronavirus pandemic. It achieved this by adapting Soldier On’s core HELP services to make them accessible to participants in isolation and support veterans and their families with targeted and relevant information and activities aimed at helping them thrive while socially and physically isolated. These have been consolidated under the themes of Stay Connected, Keep Informed and Be Engaged.
Staying Connected Championed by the Social Connections team, participants have been staying connected with family, friends and Soldier On via a range of online activities. Hosted over several Facebook groups, Soldier On has provided something for everyone. Here’s an overview and of their activities…
Soldier IrOn Chef Before Master Chef or My Kitchen Rules there was Iron Chef, a 1990’s Japanese cook-off style television program, pitting guests against the show’s resident chefs. Inspired by this concept, Soldier On put the challenge out to participants to prepare the most creative dish each month, based around or using a specific ingredient. So far, some amazingly creative (and delicious) dishes and treats have been prepared using risoni pasta in April, ANZAC biscuits in May and tuna in June.
Veterans Review Club Given the recent opportunities afforded many to reacquaint themselves with their DVD collection, or binge-watch their favourite streaming service, this group has allowed participants to engage around the joy of media. Voting from a range of genres, our group of amateur cinephiles has watched, discussed and reviewed blockbusters such as Forrest Gump, Good Morning Vietnam and Avatar.
Operation Dinnertime We reached out to Nutrition Australia ACT, who developed a healthy and affordable cooking program specially for Connect Hub participants to wow their families and lockdown mates. Presented as a weekly video hosted by Leanne, an Accredited Practising Dietician, participants are guided through the preparation of different nourishing dishes guaranteed to broaden our repertoire of home cooked meals.

Coffee Connection Since we’re unable to hold our usual face-to-face coffee catch-ups, we’ve taken the concept online, expanding the usual state-based offering to a wider audience. Co-hosted by our Social Connection and Psychology teams, these virtual catch-ups have proven to be a valuable avenue to meet new people, be entertained and find out more about the other services and activities that Soldier On facilitates for participants and families whilst at home. In addition, the value and success of Coffee Connection in engaging with more remote participants, who would not otherwise have access to the these gatherings in person, has meant that this will remain as a continued service to our participants into the future, beyond the pandemic restrictions.
Sweat On Personal trainer and Soldier On volunteer, Naeem, presents a weekly workout program to provide some motivation to our participants and get them moving in their own homes. Fun, challenging and suitable for any fitness level, these are presented as short videos, explaining the program and demonstrating each exercise.
Family Competitions Soldier On have been staging monthly competitions aimed at keeping participants engaged and working together with challenges designed to be fun for the whole family. These activities facilitated opportunities to work together and strengthen family bonds in the comfort of participants own homes. Our first family competition asked participants to show us their family super-power, which we found in the costumed garden heroes, Team Green Thumbs. We also found our very own master builders who, given the challenge to build a tower from things found at home, stacked a freestanding tower of shoes almost to the ceiling!
Keeping Informed A true team effort, ideas for a wealth of online resources were drawn from across Soldier On, with the goal of ensuring our participants have the relevant information they need to negotiate the challenges of working and living in isolation from their normal social routines and networks. As well as resources to support participants in preparing for the transition out of these restrictions. Available to anyone, these resources bring together some of the most valuable and engaging information, services and activities from both Soldier On and across the web. These have been grouped into the following areas:
Health & Wellbeing
Participant Quotes: Family Competitions “This is a great idea guys. The kids and I had a lot of fun thinking and putting together our photo. It was fun to have a whole morning filled.”
Ideas, contacts and activities to help you look after yourself and support your family, both during and after pandemic restrictions.
Employment Services Get some great tips and contacts to get you that next job.
Learning Support There's a lot of terrific learning and development resources out there (even for engaging the kids at home).
Participation Stay connected, keep moving and see the world; all from the comfort of your living room.
Being Engaged Led by our team of skilled psychologists and available exclusively to registered participants, Soldier On has facilitated several online discussions working directly with small groups of participants to support them and their families dealing with the unique stressors and challenges of physical and social isolation, as well as working and schooling from home.
Coffee Connection “Partaking in Soldier On’s coffee catch up has surprised me by putting my head into a good space to tackle the rest of the day. The past few weeks Iʼ ve been feeling quite down and I was honestly not going to go through with the virtual catch up. But I’m glad I did because I left the catch up feeling a whole lot better. Thanks guys.”

Tribute to Robert Poate ‘Poatey’ a song written by Brian Wylie and performed by Veteran Musicians Colin Greef and Mike Hogan, to remember Private Robert Poate who was killed in action in Afghanistan on August 29th 2012 along with 2 other Australian Soliders by enemy fire at Patrol Base Wahab in the Baluchi Valley region of Uruzgan province, Afghanistan. He was 23 years of age. Colin and Mike of the Soldier On Music Group dedicated the emotional musical performance to the memory of Robert and we were privileged to be joined by members of the Poate family as we honoured him.
Veterans spread love of Music They say music is the language of the soul, and that couldn’t be truer for a number of South Coast school children who have benefited from the generosity ACT-based Soldier On Music Group. The group visited South Coast communities devasted by the recent bushfires and presented a number of children with guitars and ukuleles. Group members Colin Greef, Mike Hogan and Soldier On’s Debbie Dimmock engaged in a 3-day road trip visiting schools and children all along the South Coast. The guitars have all been donated by the Canberra public and the members of the Music Group, re-furbished them and in addition to the South Coast, they to date have presented more than 90 guitars to disadvantaged children within the ACT and regional NSW at schools in Dalgety and Adaminaby, which boast fantastic music programs.
Tharwa Valley Forge Tharwa Valley Forge run regular courses to provide everyone from novices to experts with the opportunity to experience traditional crafts and to learn new skills. Banding Together Wednesday 4th Nov 2020, Soldier On Port Macquarie was invited to attend unveiling of poster boards. The idea behind the poster boards was born from what can we do for VP75 & Remembrance Day as opposed to what we couldn’t do to commemorate. Each picture is a symbol that represents the branches: Army, Navy, RAAF the nurses and the 5th is for those currently serving or in transition with the EDD being for the animals in war. The job was a community effort between the RSL Sub Branch, Hastings Co Op and Wauchope Rotary. Activities Updates Victoria Volunteering with Soldier On The Serving On program has provided our Victorian participants the opportunity for veterans to continue their service by allowing them to contribute to society and their community, to serve through purposeful volunteer work and impactful projects that help people and communities in their everyday lives. This year was like no other, an unprecedented time for Victorians due to the restrictions in place, which meant the Serving On program had to be postponed which left our veteran community unable to keep engaged, find meaningful work, social connection and purpose. This can lead to, or exacerbate, other issues including mental health condition. Justin Dickinson, founder of the Big Umbrella Foundation, provides volunteering opportunities to give back to those experiencing homelessness and food insecurity by serving fresh meals to those in need. This non-government organisation and is 100% run by volunteers, they rescue around a tonne of food each week that would usually go to waste to create more than 150 meals each night for vulnerable Australians experiencing food insecurity and homelessness. Jamal D, participant of Soldier On needed to keep connected to help with social isolation of lockdown restrictions and this was a perfect opportunity to keep him actively engaged a sense of purpose. Jamal has continued as a regular volunteer for The Big Umbrella and looks forward to this on a weekly basis. “When I left defence I felt isolated and being in lockdown made me feel the same way but, Sandy helped me with the volunteer opportunity to get out of the house and give back to the community providing me with a sense of satisfaction and happiness. The Big Umbrella has been so supportive and gave me jobs that did not affect my past injuries and made me feel so supported doing something I loved”- Jamal D We look forward to working with The Big Umbrella and Soldier On support the amazing work they are doing for those less fortunate. We hope to facilitate a Serving On project with Justin and his organisation soon. #thebigumbrella #biglove
