CEO Update Soldier On has achieved a tremendous amount in 2021. Thanks to the tireless efforts of our dedicated team and the generous support of our partners and community throughout the year, Soldier On has been able to provide support to our serving and ex-serving veterans and their families that extends far beyond what was previously possible.

S

oldier On has achieved a great deal in 2021, and there are certainly no signs of slowing down. The Soldier On team has facilitated several successful events and campaigns including the March On Fundraising Campaign, the National Gala Ball, and the In Their Honour Appeal, as well as many exciting new partnerships. The success of Soldier On can be attributed to collaboration between our team, corporate partners, ambassadors, volunteers and most importantly – our veteran community. The March On campaign is a fantastic example of the power of our community, bringing together 6,268 participants to raise more than $1.85 million. The March On challenge called upon Australians to walk 96 kilometres, the length of the Kokoda Track, in order to raise funds to help prevent veteran suicide. Our patron, 102-year-old Sergeant Bert Le-Merton inspired the nation to take to the streets, dirt tracks, the ocean floor and mountains after walking more than 419km himself. Our Principal partner, BAE Systems Australia rallied together to generously raise more than $27,000 to demonstrate their long-standing support of the veteran community. BGIS, our Platinum Pledge partner, took to the mountains to complete their challenge. Funds raised from the March On campaign will be injected into our health and wellbeing programs to expand our reach across Australia, providing life-changing mental health support, as well as providing more social connection activities nationally. The 9th annual Soldier On National Gala Ball was also held in Canberra during March. The event successfully raised more than $150,000 to support serving and ex-serving veterans and their families. Led by journalist and media personality, Mel Doyle, the event attracted more than 400 attendees and VIP guests. This was my first opportunity to gather corporate partners, Defence industry members, as well as Soldier On ambassadors, and supporters in one room since joining Soldier On as CEO. Moving into April, the Soldier On team celebrated the 100-year anniversary of The Royal Australian Air Force and reflected on the longevity of their impact. Since World War II the RAAF has taken part in wars and conflicts including in

Korea, Malaya, Vietnam, Indonesia, Iraq, and Afghanistan. The RAAF continue to serve in a contemporary sphere, delivering strategy, operations, tactics, engineering, logistics, and support in a variety of peacekeeping and foreign aid missions – as well as their recent support in the Australian summer bushfires and their continuous support during the COVID-19 pandemic. April also saw the launch of Soldier On’s In Their Honour Appeal, paying thanks to veterans of the past, as well as those continuing to serve our Nation today. In collaboration with Aussies and Kiwis for ANZAC we raised over $100,000 in donations to support Soldier On’s participants. We were also excited to welcome a new education partner – TAFE Queensland. Partnerships with education institutions like TAFE Queensland will ensure that Soldier On has the resources to offer our veteran community a smooth and supportive transition that allows them and their families to thrive post service. I extend my gratitude to TAFE Queensland for their support of the veteran community and look forward to hearing the success stories of this collaboration. In late May, Australia’s most influential Sydneysiders, Government and Defence personnel, as well as business leaders came together in support of our veteran community. Thanks to the generous support of the evening’s guests, the Sydney Gala Ball raised an astounding $1.5 million. As an organisation, the HELP we deliver to our veteran community is only as strong as our relationships with our partners and greater communities in which we reside. Our goal remains, to enable serving and ex- serving veterans and their families to thrive and we thank you for being part of our journey.

Marches On t

he March On challenge called upon Australians to walk 96 kilometres, the length of the Kokoda Track, in order to raise funds to help prevent veteran suicide. During the month of March 6,263 participants signed up to demonstrate their support for the veteran community and managed to raise more than $1.85 million. On 15 August 2020, Sergeant Bert Le-Merton set out to walk the March On Challenge with the hope of raising $10,000 for Soldier On, a target which he surpassed on the evening

of 14 August. Sergeant Bert averaged 1.75 kilometres a day, completing his initial objective of 96 kilometres on October 10, 2020. By 31 March 2021, Bert had clocked a total of 419.15km and raised $112,223 to help prevent veteran suicide. Inspiring the nation, many others embraced the challenge to reconnect with community and get fit for a great cause. The month was filled with stories of mateship and endurance as participants walked from the mountain tops to the sea floor to complete the 96km challenge.  continued on page 8

Fundraising “It has been fantastic to see people all over Australia getting out there and marching on against veteran suicide. We have seen participants around the world completing their challenge through day-to-day activities, group walks, oneday challenges, mountain hikes, and even walks across the ocean floor,” Ivan Slavich

Daz – WA Navy veteran and proud father of a veteran, Daz, completed his 96km March On Challenge with a fitting tribute to his 21-year Navy career. With a few hundred metres remaining, Daz set course for Busselton Jetty and reunited with the ocean – surpassing his 96km target while underwater. Having been diagnosed with PTSD himself, Daz was determined to continue his journey to raise funds for life-changing mental health services that would support his fellow veterans.

BGIS – Mountain Challenge During March, members of the BGIS Defence team took on the Ten Aussie Peaks; Australia’s highest peaks all located in Kosciuszko National Park. The four-day trekking challenge saw the team hike a total of 67km. A tremendous feat, the challenge had participants conquer some of our country’s most iconic peaks through extreme conditions, encountering ferocious headwinds of up to 70km/h, snow, hail, rain, flooding, and even white-outs. Thanks to generous donations from BGIS, their partners and individual supporters, the team raised more than $52,000, making BGIS the highest fundraising team throughout the March On challenge. BGIS Managing Director – Operations, Defence & FMO, Brad Robbins, also raised an outstanding $11,232 for the challenge, making him the highest individual fundraiser across the campaign and the winner of the fabulous Fitbit Versa 3 fitness watch, generously donated by The Good Guys. #sidebyside

Joss – NSW

Ollie – Tasmania

Eighty-one-year-old retired serviceman, Joss, partook in the March On challenge by walking around his back garden. A cause personal to him, Joss recalls many occasions during his life sitting with mates “completely wrecked” from their service in Vietnam.

Ollie and his team of fellow veterans set out to conquer the March On Challenge one evening by walking the 100km between Launceston and Devonport in Tasmania.

Joss is a keen gardener and has used getting his hands dirty and pottering around the yard to care for his own wellbeing for many years.

“Many of us who have served overseas come home with memories and souvenirs from foreign lands, some people come home with life-changing conditions and battle PTSD from the atrocities ... these are echoed in their daily lives for the rest of their days,” Mr Breeze said.

Joss surprised himself, and all his family when he began clocking more than 15km a day on his self-described “technical gadget” – a new shiny Fitbit his family bought him to record his kilometres whilst propagating tomatoes in his backyard. By the end of March On, Joss logged more than 295km and raised $1,331.

Ollie was ‘Marching On’ for his friend who sadly took his own life several years ago. The final stage of the team’s march was completed alongside the children of that friend.

 continued from page 6

“It almost brings me to tears how healthy pop looks after completing the March On challenge. He’s the cheeriest I’ve ever seen him in years – a new lease on life.” Jacob Cantrill, Joss’ grandson

Maintaining mental wellbeing within our veteran community is one of the greatest challenges facing our veterans and their families today. The widespread support received through Soldier On demonstrates the solidarity of community to spread awareness and fund further resources to prevent veteran suicide. “Every dollar raised as part of the March On challenge will go directly to the services that Soldier On provides to our nation’s current and ex-service personnel and their families. We will be putting on more Psychologists, more Counsellors, and offering more social connections services to help prevent veteran suicide” says Ivan Slavich, CEO. Soldier On looks forward to March On 2022 and hopes to promote an even bigger and better campaign next year.

Defence Member and Family Support is the new name for Defence Community Organisation

Defence Community Organisation hosts events around the country to help families connect to their new community and to showcase DCO programs and services. Daisy, Emily and their parents met the local DCO team at a Canberra event. Photo by Corporal Shannon McCarthy

In 2020, we took the time to reflect on our purpose and vision for the future and we’re excited to announce that on 1 July 2021 we will officially change our name from Defence Community Organisation (DCO) to Defence Member and Family Support (DMFS). DCO was formed in 1996 when the three Services’ family support organisations were brought together. Since then, DCO has grown to have a nation-wide presence with on-the-ground services delivered from local area offices and ADF Transition centres. It’s important that Defence members and their families see DCO’s services as something accessible to them as part of their community. Recently we’ve received some feedback that families may think DCO is not part of Defence and that our programs and services are not available to them. To overcome that misconception, last year we undertook staff and stakeholder consultation within Defence and also with Defence Families of Australia, the Department of Veterans’ Affairs and a number of ex-service organisations. This consultation helped us develop a new name that people could look at or hear and immediately know what we do and who we do it for. There will be no changes to the services we currently provide to Defence members and their families. The local area offices DefenceCommunityOrganisation

@DCO_AusDefence

around Australia will remain and there will be no changes to the Defence Family Helpline number 1800 624 608. Leading up to the change, you’ll start to see DMFS increasingly used so by the time 1 July rolls around there won’t be any surprises. Families can expect to see a couple of changes online as we change our factsheets, guides, forms and office email addresses to the new name. You’ll also see name changes to our social media channels, google business listings and on ForceNet. The date of 1 July 2021 has been chosen to officially change our name because it coincides with DCO’s 25th anniversary. This is a chance to look back on where we’ve come from, where we are and where we are going in the future. Stay tuned for updates on our social media channels. For more information about this or any of our programs for ADF families, please call the all-hours Defence Family Helpline on 1800 624 608 or email defencefamilyhelpline@defence.gov.au. defence.gov.au/dco

March On

Health Benefits S

oldier On’s March On challenge is a virtual walking challenge to raise funds to help prevent veteran suicide. It pays tribute to the sacrifices made by Allied soldiers in Kokoda, New Guinea during World War II. The campaign highlights the importance of assisting and honouring current serving military members and veterans. The March On challenge has raised more than $1.85 million, with over 6,000 participants completing a combined 60,000km1 in the campaign’s first week alone. The campaign not only provides vital funds for Soldier On, but also provides a myriad of mental health benefits to its participants. These can include an increased sense of belonging, a sense of social and community engagement, an increased sense of positivity, accomplishment and overall quality of life. The benefits that physical exercise can have on mental health and quality of life is well founded, but collective exercise, especially that completed as part of charitable or volunteer work, has unique benefits. Studies have

shown that participants in activities such as March On felt an increased sense of belonging, community, and acceptance as well as a sense of achievement and accomplishment greater than in individual exercise. Additionally, participants reported a strong sense of both investing in, and benefiting from, belonging to a greater community. This culminates in not only a sense of physical achievement, but also increased confidence and self-worth2. In this sense, engagement in an activity like March On not only benefits our physical and psychological self, but also satisfies our natural need for social and community engagement. Group exercise, especially for a charitable purpose, forges hope and optimism among its participants – making insurmountable obstacles seem far less daunting. Individuals working together for a collective purpose, such as addressing veteran suicide, feel an increased sense of purpose and validation through shared values between participants. Psychologists use the term “muscular-bonding” to describe collective physical effort utilised for a united purpose. It helps remind us we are not alone, and we share a collective struggle3. Essentially, a communal issue such as veteran suicide requires a communal effort. Through March On, participants have the opportunity to exercise collectively, but also have the chance to engage socially and be a part of a collective effort to assist veterans. Not only do the increased levels of endorphins released during collective exercise help participants run, march, or trek for longer – the sense of collective purpose towards a good cause, the “muscular-bonding”, further helps elevate an individual beyond their normal means and more capable of tackling an issue as important as veteran suicide.

Social Connections

Deep Sea Fishing Soldier On’s Deep Sea Fishing returned to Port Stephens on the 24th of February for the 6th year.

T

he two-day Marlin fishing adventure worked to strengthen social connections and mental health for veterans and their families.

The event has seen considerable growth and success since its inception. In its first year, the event attracted 11 participants across three vessels. This year’s event saw 70 participants hosted across 25 boats with the help of 40 captains and crew donating their time and resources on the day. Soldier On CEO, Ivan Slavich, said the annual trip is instrumental in supporting the wellbeing of veterans and their families. “The annual fishing trip is very much about supporting the health and wellbeing of veterans and their families as well as encouraging them to form and maintain meaningful social connections,” Mr Slavich said. The Port Stephens community has displayed a remarkable amount of support, with generous donations of time and resources from several partners and local businesses. Calypso Fishing Adventures Captain, Tim Dean, has been instrumental in the continued success of the Deep Sea Fishing activity. “The event could not have happened without the assistance of Tim Dean. He has been a fantastic supporter of Soldier On, organising this event, recruiting vessels and skippers, and bringing everything together on the day to give our participants a fantastic day on the water,” Mr Slavich said. “We are able to do what we do because of the sacrifices that our service men and women have made. It is a real privilege for us to be able to take them out on the water and show them what we do,” Calypso Captain, Tim Dean said.

“At its core, fishing is a team sport, and that really resonates with the veteran community. Win, lose or draw, you do it together,” Tim added. With proven links established between positive social connections and enhanced mental health, activities like this are a key component of Soldier On’s veteran support services. Soldier On participant, Eraine McArthur, attended the event after retiring from the Army earlier this year following 30 years of service. “For me, these activities keep me connected. Through these events, I am able to stay connected with the Defence community and be supported and encouraged by people in the same circumstances as me,” Eraine said. “Being in Defence, it is like being a part of a family. When you leave Defence, Soldier On helps you stay connected to that family. For me that is really important in my transition,” Eraine added. #sidebyside

SOLDIER ON Winter 2021

Fundraising On the 25th of April 1915, 16,000 Australians and New Zealanders, together with British, French and Indian troops, landed on the Gallipoli peninsula. The sacrifice, endurance, mateship, integrity and camaraderie demonstrated by the ANZACs during this campaign went on to be known as the ANZAC legacy.

C

ontemporary veterans today reflect these qualities and carry on the ANZAC legacy. ANZAC Day is the most solemn occasion for our nation and each year, Soldier On endeavours to pay our respects to our defence community and mark the day with dignity and pride. To commemorate ANZAC Day Soldier On produced a virtual commemorative service. Hosted by Hugh Riminton, the service reflected on the ANZAC legacy and traditions, whilst maintaining dialogue about the adverse impacts that service may have had on some members of the ADF community. Soldier On Chairman Peter Leahy AC delivered the official commencement and The Governor-General His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Retd) kindly delivered the commemorative address. Soldier On ambassadors shared personal stories about what ANZAC Day means to them, as well as reciting poetry. The Lancer band provided traditional hymns and musical performances throughout the service. A dry eye was hard to come by as Soldier On patron 102-year-old Sergeant Bert Le-Merton recited the ode.

In Their Honour Appeal This year, Soldier On collaborated with Aussies & Kiwis for ANZACs for the second year to create a 2021 limited edition commemorative pin. All donations above $10 received a lapel pin to acknowledge their generosity towards helping contemporary veterans and their families. Soldier On buckets were passed around football fields, local pubs sold Soldier On merchandise and businesses across Australia donated proceeds from product sales directly to Soldier On. Overall, the community kindly helped us raise more than $100,000. The money will go towards our HELP services that enable serving and ex-serving veterans and their families to thrive.

Employment

From Army Veteran to Veteran Support Jason joined the Army when he was 17 with a view to having a career in the military for life.

J

ason enlisted, beginning his Army career in combat. After proudly serving in the Australian Defence Force for four years, Jason was medically discharged. Jason had wanted an Army career for life, as he was truly committed to serving others in the Australian Army. After transitioning out of Defence, like many veterans, Jason wanted to continue to make a positive contribution to society and find a long-term meaningful career. Leaving the Army had a big impact on Jason and his family. Post-service, Jason went on to work in the security industry before moving into commercial roles. Whilst he was working, he continued to search for his true career purpose –reaching out to Soldier On for Employment support about 12 months ago. Jason contacted Soldier On’s Pathways team for assistance. The Pathways Program provides veterans and family members with practical career and job search assistance and connections to veteran-supportive employers. From updating resumes to job interview preparation, the Pathways team help enable veterans and family members to find and secure future employment opportunities.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to work with Soldier On and look forward to the future ahead.”

Soldier On’s Pathways Program Soldier On’s Pathways Program provides serving and ex-serving ADF members and their families with free employment and education support. Find out more at www.pathways.soldieron.org.au

Fast forward a year, and Jason has recently been employed at Soldier On, in a role which will help enable other veterans and their families to secure their future careers. Jason has finally found his career pathway to long-term meaningful employment. “My passion and purpose is to contribute to assisting our veterans and families, I’ve given myself a mission statement which says ‘I can no longer serve in the Defence force, although I can serve those from the Defence force’. I’m grateful for the opportunity to work with Soldier On and look forward to the future ahead,” Jason says. #sidebyside

Pathways to employment during COVID-19:

Finding a new post-service career amidst a global pandemic N

athaniel joined the Australian Army in 2004, initially as a reservist in the Infantry Corps before going to fulltime service with the Army as a ground crewman in aviation in 2006. Nathaniel’s Army career spanned a decade and included deployments to East Timor and Afghanistan. “I learnt a lot in Afghanistan – professionally and personally, I learn a lot about mates and friendship. It was a highlight of my career,” says Nathaniel. After 10 years of service in the Australian Army, Nathaniel decided to move on from the ADF in search of a new career. He went on to work in private contracting and had a number of high-profile contract roles abroad, including at the Embassy in Kabul. Coming home to Australia in March 2020, during the Covid-19 global pandemic, Nathaniel faced a challenging employment market. He submitted over 100 job applications

18

SOLDIER ON Winter 2021

over a period of three months, without successfully securing a permanent role. Finding that he was getting fatigued as an uber driver, working 12-hour shifts for irregular income, Nathaniel made the life-changing phone call to Soldier On’s Pathways team for employment support. “I heard about Soldier On through an ex-military member. We worked together and he told me to give Soldier On a call after coming back from Afghanistan. My mate told me to get in contact with Soldier On because of the support they can give in helping you find work in this current environment, especially during COVID – knowing the difficulty of finding employment and I’m so glad I did.” Nathaniel rang Soldier On and was put in contact with a local Pathways Officer in Queensland. That phone call set his new

career in motion and helped to fast-track him into his new career in concierge security. Soldier On’s Pathways team provides veterans and their families with free employment and education support. This includes practical employment assistance like resume building, help with job applications and introductions to veteran-supportive employers. During the Covid-19 pandemic support has continued to be available over the phone, online and in new ways including videocalls and webinars. “The best thing Soldier On did for me was the support and hooking me up with the company – within 4 days of getting in contact with the Pathways team they put me in touch with my current employer and I got the job.” Today Nathaniel is enjoying permanent work in concierge security for Davki Security – the company that Soldier On’s Pathways team introduced him to. Davki Security, Australia’s leading corporate security provider is a veteran-owned company, so the organisation truly appreciates and understands ex-military, recognises the skills acquired in Defence and values the strong work ethic of those who have been in the military. Davki Security is one of over 100 organisations that have signed the 2021 Soldier On Pledge – making a public commitment to provide veteran-supportive recruitment, retention, training and workplace culture. Giovanni Brown, Operations Manager, is proud to have Nathaniel in his team: “Nathaniel is a valuable asset to our team, in fact he is one of two ADF veterans within our team who have recently been selected to undergo our 12 Month Davki Future Leadership training program. We are excited to see Nathaniel continue to grow as a leader within our organisation, he is a great asset to our team.” Nathaniel has been enjoying his new role and really appreciates his veteran-supportive employer, the veteranfriendly work environment and a stable income. “I’m loving it, I’m relaxed, my stress levels are low, it’s a good working environment. I’m happy.” Not everyone has been as lucky as Nathaniel in finding long-term meaningful work during the Covid-19 pandemic. It’s hoped that with the support of Soldier On’s Pathways

team, more veteran and family member’s employment journeys may be easier, and more veterans and their families will secure their future career. Nathaniel’s biggest piece of advice for anyone in a similar situation to he was earlier in the year, is to make that call to Soldier On today; “There’s no shame in asking for help, it’s the braver action. If you’re on your own you are weaker, when you’re together you’re in a stronger position. I couldn’t have got where I’m at today, if it wasn’t for the help that Soldier On gave me. So make that call to Soldier On today.”

The Soldier On Pledge Organisations that sign the Soldier On Pledge commit to providing veteran-supportive recruitment, retention, training and workplace culture. If you’re serving or ex-serving and looking to secure your future career contact the Pathways team to find out more on employment@soldieron.org.au or call 1300 620 380 and ask to be put through to your local Pathways Officer. educational pathways and career outcomes through a range of TAFE Queensland courses.

Working in partnership Soldier On and TAFE Queensland will provide greater support for Australian Defence Force members and their families as they transition into civilian life.

TAFE Queensland has already established a strong relationship with ex-ADF members through the TAFE Queensland Transition to Civi Street program which matches existing skill sets with educational opportunities to create new meaningful civilian career paths. Since the initiative was launched in 2020, over 200 ex-ADF members have been guided to find new career pathways in a range of industries including electrotechnology, manufacturing, horticulture, fitness, nursing, engineering, and project management.

The collaborative efforts will extend on Soldier On’s existing programs which include health and well-being services, employment programs, learning opportunities and participation activities to include guided professional

ex-ADF members into Trades Assistant roles and hope to welcome more ex-ADF members from the Transition to Civi Street program and Soldier On engagement in the future. PFi Aerospace Education Manager, Britt Cleary said the company has been extremely impressed with the skill levels and industry knowledge that Ex-ADF members possess and bring into the organisation. “Ex-ADF members have impeccable reliability and great attitudes throughout all facets of their learning and the projects they have been completing. They have transferable skill sets and industry-based knowledge which has allowed them to easily upskill and work alongside our engineers,” Ms Cleary said. TAFE Queensland – SkillsTech General Manager John Tucker said the partnership with Soldier On is another important initiative to support ex-ADF members and their families who have made significant contributions to our nation. “For many current and ex-ADF members the transition back into civilian life can present some challenges and TAFE Queensland is extremely proud to be able to provide professional guidance and educational pathways as these members take the next step in their careers,” Mr Tucker said. “Our ex-ADF Defence Solutions Officers understand the skills, language, experience, and knowledge that ex-ADF members have gained through their military service and are able to translate these skill sets into educational and employment pathways that lead to meaningful civilian employment opportunities.” “In the past six months since the TAFE Queensland and Soldier On partnership was formed, over 50 ex-ADF members have been assisted by TAFE Queensland to find both educational and career outcomes and we look forward to assisting more men and women as they transition into civilian life,” said Mr Tucker.

Soldier On CEO, Ivan Slavich said that Soldier On are incredibly grateful for the support provided by TAFE Queensland. “Through this partnership, TAFE Queensland acknowledges the diverse skill sets that our veterans acquire during their time with the Australian Defence Force and the value that these skill sets hold. This partnership will greatly assist Soldier On in our mission to help serving and ex-serving veterans and their families to thrive,” said Mr Slavich.

“Ex-ADF members have impeccable reliability and great attitudes throughout all facets of their learning and the projects they have been completing.” Ms Cleary

National Gala Ball 26

SOLDIER ON Winter 2021

Soldier On celebrated its 9th annual National Gala Ball at the National Arboretum Canberra, where more than $150,000 was raised in support of serving and ex-serving veterans and their families.

L

ed by journalist and media personality, Melissa Doyle, the premier black-tie event attracted more than 400 attendees and VIP guests. The event welcomed the most senior people in Defence, business and the community to raise money for Soldier On’s life-changing services. This year’s event saw His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Retd) deliver a memorable address, sharing the complexities of service. “We should recognise that this generation has changed, evolved and built on the ANZAC legacy in a spectacularly successful way… If you take the words ‘Endurance’, ‘Sacrifice’, ‘Mateship’ and ‘Courage’ – the four words we talk about on ANZAC Day – how do you turn that into a way that you live your life as a country?” His Excellency said. “There are three aspects to that; give us a job to do and we will do our best to get it done, give us a job to do and we will do it in a way that you will feel proud of us, while we are doing that we will look after our mates, and when we’re finished, we will look after them too. That, to me, is the ANZAC legacy. Soldier On lives that to its core,” His Excellency added. Soldier On CEO, Ivan Slavich, said he was overwhelmed by the outstanding support that was received on the night. “It is fantastic  continued on page 28 #sidebyside

New Soldier On

Case Coordinators Liz and Tammy joined Soldier On as the new Case Coordinators in March and have hit the ground running. From being involved in the incredible Women’s Vet Connect program, to networking, attending events and creating new procedures; these women sure are busy!

O

ur Case Coordinators are your first point of contact when entering the Soldier On family. They will walk you through the various supports and services Soldier On has to offer, connect individuals with the appropriate people or programs and openly listen to any questions and suggestions which arise. Liz, who is based in SA, has been working alongside Charmaine (Social Connections) in coordinating the SA Women’s Vet Connect with their first program kicking off the weekend commencing May 14 in beautiful Normanville. In support of the troops who signed up to participate in the 96km walk as part of March On, Liz visited the Edinburgh RAAF Base, seeing off the 1CSST team as they commenced the first stretch of their four‑day journey. Additionally, Liz has met with Veterans SA, Military & Emergency Services Health Association (MESHA), Kookaburra Kids and attended social connections activities including an Adelaide Oval tour and sailing on the One and All ship with our participants and their families. Over on the West coast, Tammy has been getting to know the WA participants by attending indoor rock-climbing, going to the Perth Zoo for family fun day and contacting each individual to let them know they have a new point of contact (that’s over 350 people!). Tammy has also been working on numerous partnerships with local mental health providers to aid our veterans, their partners and children with the support they deserve. Both women are loving their new roles, gaining insight into the veteran community, and aiding all participants.  Right Liz (top) and Tammy (bottom).

Soldier On was quick to respond to the implementation of social and physical distancing measures in March with the rapid development and rollout of the Connect Hub support initiative via the Soldier On website. The goal of Connect Hub is to support participants in meeting and conquering the personal and societal challenges of living through the coronavirus pandemic. It achieved this by adapting Soldier On’s core HELP services to make them accessible to participants in isolation and support veterans and their families with targeted and relevant information and activities aimed at helping them thrive while socially and physically isolated. These have been consolidated under the themes of Stay Connected, Keep Informed and Be Engaged.

Staying Connected Championed by the Social Connections team, participants have been staying connected with family, friends and Soldier On via a range of online activities. Hosted over several Facebook groups, Soldier On has provided something for everyone. Here’s an overview and of their activities…

Soldier IrOn Chef Before Master Chef or My Kitchen Rules there was Iron Chef, a 1990’s Japanese cook-off style television program, pitting guests against the show’s resident chefs. Inspired by this concept, Soldier On put the challenge out to participants to prepare the most creative dish each month, based around or using a specific ingredient. So far, some amazingly creative (and delicious) dishes and treats have been prepared using risoni pasta in April, ANZAC biscuits in May and tuna in June.

Veterans Review Club Given the recent opportunities afforded many to reacquaint themselves with their DVD collection, or binge-watch their favourite streaming service, this group has allowed participants to engage around the joy of media. Voting from a range of genres, our group of amateur cinephiles has watched, discussed and reviewed blockbusters such as Forrest Gump, Good Morning Vietnam and Avatar.

Operation Dinnertime We reached out to Nutrition Australia ACT, who developed a healthy and affordable cooking program specially for Connect Hub participants to wow their families and lockdown mates. Presented as a weekly video hosted by Leanne, an Accredited Practising Dietician, participants are guided through the preparation of different nourishing dishes guaranteed to broaden our repertoire of home cooked meals.

34

SOLDIER ON Winter 2021

Coffee Connection Since we’re unable to hold our usual face-to-face coffee catch-ups, we’ve taken the concept online, expanding the usual state-based offering to a wider audience. Co-hosted by our Social Connection and Psychology teams, these virtual catch-ups have proven to be a valuable avenue to meet new people, be entertained and find out more about the other services and activities that Soldier On facilitates for participants and families whilst at home. In addition, the value and success of Coffee Connection in engaging with more remote participants, who would not otherwise have access to the these gatherings in person, has meant that this will remain as a continued service to our participants into the future, beyond the pandemic restrictions.

Sweat On Personal trainer and Soldier On volunteer, Naeem, presents a weekly workout program to provide some motivation to our participants and get them moving in their own homes. Fun, challenging and suitable for any fitness level, these are presented as short videos, explaining the program and demonstrating each exercise.

Family Competitions Soldier On have been staging monthly competitions aimed at keeping participants engaged and working together with challenges designed to be fun for the whole family. These activities facilitated opportunities to work together and strengthen family bonds in the comfort of participants own homes. Our first family competition asked participants to show us their family super-power, which we found in the costumed garden heroes, Team Green Thumbs. We also found our very own master builders who, given the challenge to build a tower from things found at home, stacked a freestanding tower of shoes almost to the ceiling!

Keeping Informed Connect Hub is Soldier On’s digital initiative to keep veterans and their families connected and supported during the Covid-19 pandemic. Lockdown, isolation, and social distancing doesn’t mean Soldier On participants need to feel alone. Soldier On’s Connect Hub brings together incredible resources and online social opportunities for current serving and ex-serving ADF members and their families in one place:

Being Engaged Led by our team of skilled psychologists and available exclusively to registered participants, Soldier On has facilitated several online discussions working directly with small groups of participants to support them and their families dealing with the unique stressors and challenges of physical and social isolation, as well as working and schooling from home.

www.soldieron.org.au/connect-hub A true team effort by Soldier On support service teams across Australia – a wealth of online resources have been drawn together with the goal of ensuring Soldier On participants and the wider community have the relevant information they need to negotiate the challenges of working and living in isolation from their normal social routines and networks. These resources bring together some of the most valuable and engaging information, services, and activities from both Soldier On and across the web. These have been grouped into the following areas:

Health & Wellbeing Online Mental Health support is available via Soldier On Psychologist-led group support workshops. Access contacts for support services and activities to help you look after yourself and support your family, both during and after pandemic restrictions.

Participant Quotes: Family Competitions “This is a great idea guys. The kids and I had a lot of fun thinking and putting together our photo. It was fun to have a whole morning filled.”

Employment Services Get job ready and find new pathways into long-term meaningful employment, even during the pandemic. Join the Pathways Program for practical assistance with your resume and job applications, access to over 1000 job opportunities and connections to help you secure your future career.

Learning Support Access incredible free digital learning opportunities via the Pathways Program. Upskill, re-train and kick-start your future career pathway. There’s a lot of terrific learning and development resources available via Soldier On and online (even for engaging the kids at home).

Participation Stay connected, keep moving and have fun – all from the comfort of your living room. Join Soldier On’s wide variety of online social activities and groups from coffee connections: a digital coffee catch-up, to book club, keep fit, cooking, family competitions and more.

Coffee Connection “Partaking in Soldier On’s coffee catch up has surprised me by putting my head into a good space to tackle the rest of the day. The past few weeks Iʼ ve been feeling quite down and I was honestly not going to go through with the virtual catch up. But I’m glad I did because I left the catch up feeling a whole lot better. Thanks guys.”

The Rotary Club of Port Macquarie West Supporting Soldier On The Rotary Club of Port Macquarie West is attempting to ‘sock it’ to Germany by creating the longest washing line of socks off Chancellors Drive on 4 and 5 June, while raising $15,000 for four amazing local charities. Sovereign Place kicked things off with a $15,000 pledge at the challenge launch where a successful test run was held. “All the charities have suffered hard through Covid-19 with restrictions on their fundraising,” shared Rotarian Trevor Gilson, the mastermind behind the event. Beneficiaries include Soldier On, Endeavour Mental Health Recovery Clubhouse, YP Space and the Hastings Education Fund.

Horse Riding During the second week of school holidays our Veterans and their families were invited to join Port Macquarie Horse Riding Club for a free trail ride, Coffee Catch Up and morning tea at Twotriplefour Restaurant. Great feedback from our veterans and their families. “Horse riding was super amazing considering I’ve never ridden on a horse before. The staff were super friendly and helpful.” “One of the best Soldier On functions I’ve attended, firstly the food and coffee was amazing and the trail ride was managed and done very well.”

Coffee Catchups and Active Thursdays Regular activities promote Social Connection within our Veteran Community right here on the Mid North Coast. While our items baked there were extra challenges such as sliding an Oreo down your face, whipping egg whites the fastest and good ol fav, chubby bunny. Symbio Wildlife Park Handog Climbing Gym The Kiama team ‘hung out’ at Handog Climbing Gym, Wollongong and were up to the challenge of undertaking various levels of climbs. A great time was had by all and it has proven to be a fun and engaging activity. The Kiama team is looking to host this as a regular event, with the end goal of climbing in the great outdoors.

To start off the Easter Holidays, the Kiama team took a group to Symbio Wildlife Park. It was a great opportunity for the participants to meet up and enjoy some time exploring the park and its array of native and exotic animals.

Ten Pin Thursdays Ten Pin Thursdays are gaining momentum and have been a way of engaging the local veterans in a comfortable and relaxing environment. With a bit of friendly banter and competition, this activity has been great. We will be playing league before we know it.

Working Bee The Veterans HELP Centre got a bit of a makeover with many hands pitching in to get our activity hub up and running. It was great to see Soldier On staff and local veterans giving their time to help make the centre a relaxing and safe space for veterans and their families to come and hang out. Gold Coast Suns Training Session We arrived at Metricon Stadium’s Gate 6 to meet Harley Hollonds, the Community Engagement Coordinator. Harley had a huge smile on his face when he arrived and as we approached him we could hear the reason why, the Suns senior team were training, yelling and getting after it in preparation for their clash with the Sydney Swans the coming Saturday, we could hear it from outside the stands! This wasn’t an ordinary training session and we were so privileged to see this raw and real experience up close, while Harley

46

talked to each participant about the club, its short history and its people. Once training was complete the players came over to us, exhausted and tired, to have a chat and pose for some pictures, it was great to see young guns and senior players alike, give their time humbly and honestly. Will Powell, a wiry, tough defender mentioned that they will do everything to get a win for us. And win they did, in a gritty 101% effort style of game which was incredible to watch them beat the (3rd on the ladder) Sydney Swans by 40 points.

Kettlebell Workshop

Brisbane Broncos Training Session Soldier On was very lucky to attend another training session with the Brisbane Broncos. The club itself were a dream to work with and incredibly supportive of the work we do at Soldier On. We attended open training, met the players and coaches who gave us their time willingly. We were blessed to meet Wally Lewis and Petro Civoniceva who stopped by for a chat and a photo. Two of our lucky kids in attendance were given signed boots, fresh off the feet of superstar Anthony Milford, a gesture that speaks highly of the clubs strong community presence. We also got a look inside the state of the art, Clive Berghofer Centre, where the players prepare, train and recover, it is an incredible facility and well worth a look.

Our kettlebell workshop was no regular training session, our instructor Piers Kwan, is a highly sought-after trainer and Team Leader with StrongFirst and Original Strength. The day started with us learning to breathe and move in ways that will help open up the hips, activate our posterior chain and to get our bodies moving well, before adding any kind of load. We were brought back to basics and learned to squat, push up, swing and pull up safely and in a strong position to prevent injury. It is exactly what we as veterans needed, to be paired back from overtraining and be able to build strength in a way that will make us focus on form and correct breathing techniques. It was eye opening and incredibly pleasing to see so many current and ex serving leaders and fitness leaders grab this learning opportunity, we have two more workshops in the coming months and we are really looking forward to using these methods in our Brendale Centre Gym over the coming years! We cannot thank Piers enough for his time and knowledge, and he gave both to Soldier On participants freely.

One and All Tall Ship Adelaide kicked off with a bang taking to the high seas with families bearing the cold wet wonderful weather on offer. Not a dry limb in sight but grins from ear to ear as families, friends and colleagues all came together for a jam-packed day out on the ocean. Thanks to the entire team at One and All for taking such great care of us while ensuring everyone was kitted out with rain jackets and hot beverages to take the chill away. The Captain got plenty of help sailing the ship while many took to the ropes climbing up the mast to get the best view on board with the little ones scoured the sides of the ship ever so bravely.

Victoria After what had been an arduous year of 2020 the Social Connection team have been able to get back to what we do best and start providing our participants with fantastic activities to provide veterans and their families the opportunity to build new connections once again with likeminded others. Some of our activities that we facilitated over the past few months included; our annual Fishing Charter, Ten Pin Bowling and a indoor skydiving experience at iFly.

Coffee Catch-Ups

Walking off the War Within Soldier On are proud supporters of the annual Walking Off The War Within’ event held in memory of Nathan Shanahan, a returned soldier and firefighter, and other fallen Service Men and Women who have taken their own lives after battling mental health issues. It was a great day out supporting this national movement with our Soldier On participants and their families at both Ballarat and Mildura with Darren Thomas our VIC Ambassador representing our organisation.

Afterwards we all sat down to a complimentary cheeseburger and fries. It was a wonderful day out on the course for everyone. There are limited spaces still available for next outing!

SOLDIER ON Winter 2021

Soldier On WA attended Kookaburra Kids Launch Party in which a very productive lunch took place between all of Western Australias Ex-Service Organisations. We discussed how we can better work together and provide veterans and their families the support that they need.

AQWA Aquarium & Perth Zoo BADGERS 96KM WALK Aaron Simpson (AKA Badger) of Cockburn and Wayne Simcoe of Scarborough literally stepped it up to walk 96kms straight from the Mandurah Forum to the Joondalup Shopping Centre. It took them 22 hours to complete the amazing feat and in return they raised $7200.00 for Soldier On. “We set out on the 96km challenge to raise funds and awareness to help support returned veterans suffering PTSD and to prevent veteran suicide. The challenge was both mentally and physically difficult. Thank you to my support crew, without you this would have not been possible”. – Aaron Simpson

Veterans and their families enjoyed their school holidays with Soldier On WA by receiving free admission to the Perth Zoo and the AQWA aquarium. During school holidays Soldier On WA always has something exciting and new to do. Do not forget next time you are planning your holidays!
