NEW YEAR, NEW YOU
HERE WE GO AGAIN!
No burpees required. Norfolk’s natural environment could be the answer to a gentler approach to finding betterment and peace of mind in 2025 says Melanie Cook of VisitNorwich.co.uk
EVERY
magazine you pick up in the New Year will be encouraging us to head to the gym when memberships peak and classes are bursting at the seams. And then come Easter, they are not.
I firmly believe that a gentler move towards exercise is kinder to our bodies (we don’t want to shock our systems coming straight out of Christmas) which in turn is sustainable to keep on track with. So, my recommendations for 2025? I’ve taken a closer look at the natural world around us; Norfolk offers us endless opportunities to breathe clean, fresh air and witness amazing wildlife across our diverse landscapes. And the incentive? Our changing seasons.
Because this new regime is for well beyond January. As we traverse the county, we’ll witness bare branches turning into incredible blossoms. And sparce brown hedgerows becoming bushy green boundaries, not forgetting delicate spring crocuses, snowdrops and pretty bluebells. Then it’s soft green, spongy grass as we head into summer, followed by the stunning reds and gold of autumn as we head into the rest of the year.
HERE WE GO.
For urbanites and lovers of Norwich’s incredible architecture and history, I’m suggesting heading to VisitNorwich. co.uk (visitnorwich.co.uk/freesightseeing-in-norwich/) and scrolling down the page to Wandering Words. Commissioned by the National Centre for Writing, follow the link to their website to seven locations in Norwich where seven amazing writers have penned poems for seven locations! Each is a site-specific soundscape offering a different perspective from the one that perhaps you already know – locations include Plantation Garden, The Herb Garden at Norwich Cathedral, and Julian of Norwich Church. Norwich is very proudly England’s first UNESCO City of Literature and Wandering Words
came about as a celebration of this for its 10th anniversary in 2022.
If you want to head to the coast then my suggestion would be joining Walking Women (free) who meet on the first Tuesday of every month for a walk either on the beach at Holkham, Wells or at Holkham Park (www.holkham.co.uk/ whats-on/walking-women/). Designed with wellness at its heart these walks are great for meeting new people, savouring breaths of salty sea air and giving us an appreciation for our beautiful coast- all year round.
In the Broads, I recommend purchasing an annual membership for Fairhaven Woodland and Water Garden (£45) to enjoy 12 months of free entry as well as a plethora of other benefits including free events, wild water swimming and discounts to special days and evenings throughout the year. Next in their calendar is their Star Night (Saturday 1 February; 6.30pm – 10.30pm; £10, members £7.50, child tickets available too), for an enchanting celestial journey with astro photographer Shaun
Reynolds and friends affiliated with Norwich Astronomy. There will be talks, telescopes, and phone and computer apps to unveil the night sky as well as a starlit canopy in the courtyard. Plus, the café will be open for warming drinks and food. This is followed by their Dawn Chorus (Saturday 5 April; 6.15am; £29.50, members £19.95) for a joyous “stunning songs of dawn guided tour” followed by a full English buffet breakfast. Marvellous.
If you want to work on yourself from top to toe, then Yantra Studio on King Street close to Dragon Hall in Norwich might be the place for you. They offer a full range of yoga, barre fusion, Pilates, hot yoga and special event classes which includes gong baths for deep sound healing meditation. The varying benefits of all these classes are huge, and they cater for all abilities. Prices are varied due to one off classes, monthly and multiple visits and start at £15 with lots of options for bulk buying which brings the price down.
For those who prefer nourishment through culture then book tickets (£10) to see Norwich: A Love Story, a storytelling show by John Osborne at the unique venue of The Museum of Norwich. Fresh from a sell-out show at Norwich Playhouse this is a story full of love, secrets and the history of the market stalls, bars and shops in our fine city. It’s also a chance to experience this gem of a museum after dark (17 January, 6.30pm – 8.30pm, show 60 minutes).
Then on 19 January (10am – 4pm), the hugely popular Indian Street Food Carnival (Winter 2025) returns. Offered by Namaste Village on Queens Road, Norwich - this a feast for the soul. Expect vibes of India’s street food markets with the irresistible aromas of spices and flavours. From savoury chaats to crispy pakoras; delectable dosa to aromatic biryanis; Indo-Chinese to Bombay specials. And even more attractive is that

So, if January is when we gently exercise our bodies and positively feed our emotions, what’s February bringing us?
Norwich Science Festival by The Forum has to be one of Norwich’s best success stories with an annual packed programme of events and discoveries for absolutely every age. 2025 is its 9th birthday, taking place Saturday 15 –Saturday 22 February, with great events and a mix of paid for and free tickets.
Steve Backshall MBE and Dame Darcey Bussell will headline. On the first day of the Festival (Saturday 15 Feb), Steve Backshall will share his awe-inspiring encounters with whales in a dedicated talk for families and children at the University of East Anglia – exploring the threats that these magnificent creatures face and offering tips on how we can all play a role in protecting them.
Then in the evening, Steve will be in conversation with local evolutionary biologist and Norwich Science Festival patron, Prof Ben Garrod where the pair will dive into some of Steve’s most unforgettable wildlife experiences and the vital conservation work he’s so passionate about. Tickets £20, UEA.
The Festival will close (Saturday 22 Feb) with a glittering evening of conversation and dance between
legendary Dame Darcey Bussell and Dr. Peter Lovatt at Norwich Theatre Royal, known affectionately as Dr. Dance! Together, they will explore the transformative impact of dance and movement on our mental well-being. With Darcey’s ballet expertise and Peter’s psychological insights, this event is a must-see for fans of dance. Tickets £23.
But of course, between these two events there will be plenty of other stuff including the magical atmosphere of the Explorer Dome, a fabulous popular half term event (Saturday 15 – Wednesday 19 Feb, £8, ages 3-12 years). This is a planetarium that will transport visitors to new worlds, including inside the human digestive system and into the far-flung world of the Solar System!
The Explorium is literarily the heart of the festival, sitting inside The Forum and out. With free entrance, this is an exciting and vibrant place to get stuck into some hands-on science! With exhibitors changing every day, there’s reason to visit for the entire festival. Explore the incredible research happening right here in Norwich, learn about the wonders of local wildlife, or test your own scientific skills in free, hands-on activities, challenges and games.
Other free family events include Yum or Yuck? The Science of Taste (Sunday, 16 February), Nellie's Autistic Brain (17 February), Food Scientists to the Rescue! (Relaxed Performance, 18 February), and Food Scientists to the Rescue! (various dates).
Dr. Jess French and Prof. Ben Garrod are back with the ever-popular Animal Top Trumps show (Sunday 16 Feb, £8, 5 years +, The Blake Studio Norwich School) – and this time, it’s Little Vs. Large in an epic showdown!
Lastly, tickets for the early release shows at Norfolk & Norwich Festival are available to buy. Tours of the Guildhall are until April and cost £5. These tours are always very popular so if you fancy it, book quickly via their site (https:// nnfestival.org.uk/).
One of their headliners in 2025 is Showdown (14 – 25 May 2025) - seven extraordinary acrobats but only one winner; contemporary circus with humour. It’s described as “part talent show, part beauty pageant, with a touch of the Hunger Games”. Tickets cost between £10 and £28 at the Adnams Spiegeltent.

GLORIOUS
by Charlie Smith-Knight
Well, hello
there St. Valentine. The Christmas lights have been (badly) put away for another year and the ritual slog through the 365 days of January have commenced. But here he comes, ready to rip the last of those mince pies out your hand and ram his zeal for love down your throat instead. Does he love love even more than Cupid? Probably, because it’s not hard to beat babies at stuff. They’re famously easy to distract and have no longevity for enduring interest. So, Sainty V is coming with his annual reminder for us to celebrate the ones we love in life. On that note, I’m aware that notoriously St Valentine is usually out here fangirling couples. Generally, they’re considered his bread and butter. But this 3rd century Roman didn’t account for a bunch of 30 somethings raised on Bridget Jones and the ability to slide into each other’s DMs. Let’s be honest, our parents can’t even be mad. They cultivated the 1960’s into reality and should just be grateful
social media didn’t exist to immortalise an era of tie dye and questionable substance consumption.
So, what do the singletons do when the Valentine fl ood gates open and spew their lovelorn guts all over the place like the elevator doors in The Shining? Well, the 90s called and they want pints of ice cream and crying back. No, we have moved on as a species. Enter, Galentine’s. Fans of Parks and Recreation will need no introduction to the idea but from those humble beginnings, millennials have picked up that relatable torch and run with it. Now Galentine’s is the modern mid-February celebration for those who don’t have, or don’t want, a romantic partner.
Essentially, Galentine’s is your opportunity to revel in the platonic love you have for your gals. Obviously, in the interest of inclusivity, please feel free to replace ‘gals’ with ‘pals’, after all slinging back a chilled Pinot and roasting each other’s ex’s is a sport for all gender

identities. Book a restaurant, throw a dinner party or just pull up a chair at a familiar table and if the wine isn’t enough of an incentive, please consider all the ways your friends have enriched your life. Very few of us have ended up in therapy as the result of a friendship *cough* marriage counselling *cough*. In fact, there’s actual Science involved here. Goggles on, please. Studies have shown that those with strong social connections are safeguarded against mental health issues like depression and anxiety. Sharing your experiences
with trust-worthy mates helps to protect you against negative thought invasion and promote your overall mental well-being. Your friends even bolster your physical welfare. Textbooks open, please. ‘The Annals of Behavioural Medicine. Vol 33’ states that having a supportive friend to talk to reduces stress resulting in lower blood pressure. Yes, I actually looked that up. And yes, your friends are actually having a positive impact on your physiology. Other
studies have shown that when faced with tough tasks, those working alongside their friends had a reduced heart rate compared to those working alone. In turn, isolation has proven links to increased incidents of heart attack, stroke and precipitated death (excitedly stabs whiteboard to emphasise the point). Not to be dramatic but our friends are the allies we have against life’s pitfalls and an expedited march towards the grave. I know, I know, keep it light.

Consider them the Besties Armed Forces. When that Tinder date turns out to be catfish, who is going to be there to assure you that it was probably just filters and not your terrible judgement? Or when you’re getting chatted up by someone who has the sort of halitosis that could strip paint at 500 yards, who is going to promise you that there are less smelly fish in the sea? It’s your pals. You’ve bonded over your shared life experience and they’re currently saving you from a premature toe-tag. Now, isn’t that worth celebrating?!
The Indian philosopher Osho, once said ‘friendship is the purest love’. Saweetie and Doja Cat said something that can’t legally be printed. The point is, no matter who you are, the friends you have are some of the real loves of your life. So, raise a glass with your pals this February 14th and toast to a renewed year of friendship. Come hell, high water and all the phases of jeans. Even low-rise.

Welcome to InspireMe, a new section of Places and Faces Magazine, created by me, Victoria at InspireMe PR. In this space, I’ll bring you stories of incredible people, inspiring ideas, and discussions that challenge the status quo. From inspirational men and women to places that inspire change and ideas that provoke thought—it’s all about sparking conversation and inspiring action.
This month, I’m delighted to bring you the story of Steph, the founder of Goly Natural, a brand that’s rooted in authenticity, simplicity, and a deep love for natural skincare. Her story will make you think twice about the products you use daily and the impact they have on your skin—and your health.
THE TRUTH ABOUT YOUR SKINCARE ROUTINE
One of the most eye-opening aspects of Steph’s journey has been uncovering the hidden truths about the chemicals we apply to our skin.
“According to a survey by the Environmental Working Group the average American woman applies over 168 chemicals to her skin every day. Many of these are absorbed into the body and can have long-term effects,” says Steph. “This is one of the driving forces behind Goly Natural’s ethos, encouraging people to scrutinise ingredient lists and really consider what they’re putting on their skin.”
Steph is passionate about helping people become more aware of what’s in their skincare. “If you can’t pronounce it or need to Google it to know what it is, ask yourself if you really need it. We’ve normalised skincare routines with 10, 15 steps—but it’s overwhelming and unnecessary.”
“LESS IS MORE”—HOW GOLY NATURAL BEGAN
For Steph, Goly Natural is more than just a brand—it’s a reflection of her upbringing and values.
“I was born and raised in the mountains, using natural remedies and old wives' tales,” she shares. “I used to experiment and make my own

rose water as a child. It’s part of me; it’s not just a passion. It’s the norm I grew up with.”
Steph spent her childhood on her grandparents’ small farm in Portugal, where she was surrounded by nature. Her connection to the earth was forged through simple, everyday experiences— harvesting strawberries, gathering peanuts and herbs, and even helping prepare animals for meals.
“When I moved to the city, people didn’t understand my connection to nature. They’d say, ‘Food comes from the supermarket,’ and I’d think, No, it doesn’t. It comes from the land. That shaped the way I see the world—and skincare.”
THE BIRTH OF GOLY NATURAL
Steph’s journey to creating Goly Natural wasn’t linear. After years of working as a care coordinator and later training as a barber, she found herself at a crossroads during the Covid-19

lockdown. With more time on her hands and a desire to build something meaningful, she turned to her love of natural remedies.
The result was Goly Natural—a brand focused on 100% natural, cruelty-free skincare. The name, inspired by her Polish partner, means “naked” or “bare” in Polish, reflecting the brand’s ethos of simplicity and transparency.
“I started making products for my children in 2010 because I didn’t want to use products with harsh chemicals on their delicate skin,” Steph explains. “Even natural brands weren’t as pure as I wanted, and they were expensive. So, I made my own.”
Her first creation was the Rose Salve, originally developed as a nappy cream. “That product is still my bestseller today,” she says proudly. “It’s been featured in Tatler Magazine and can be used for so much more than nappy rash—it’s a fantastic body lotion and soothing balm.”
WHAT SHOULD YOU AVOID IN SKINCARE?
For those trying to decipher the confusing labels on skincare products, Steph offers clear advice.
Avoid:
• Petroleum-based ingredients (like PEGs).
• Parabens, sulfates, phthalates, and phenoxyethanol.
• Long, unrecognisable ingredient names—often a red flag for synthetic chemicals.
Look out for:
• Simple, natural ingredients that you can pronounce.
• Products with no water as a primary ingredient. “If water is the first ingredient listed, you’re essentially paying for tap water,” Steph explains.
By following these guidelines, consumers can make better choices and avoid wasting money on unnecessary additives.
PERSONALISED SKINCARE CONSULTATIONS
Steph’s passion for helping others extends to free personalised consultations.
“I offer free consultations because I want to be sure people are getting the right products for their specific needs,” she explains. “I don’t want people to just buy what’s on the shelf. I ask questions like, ‘What is your skin doing right now?’ and, ‘What’s bothering you about it?’ so I can make recommendations based on their answers.”
She takes a holistic approach, often encouraging clients to look beyond skincare products to their diet and gut health. “Your skin is a reflection of what’s happening inside,” Steph says. “If you’re breaking out, it might not be the cream you’re using—it could be your diet, stress, or sleep habits.”
EDUCATING THROUGH EXPERIENCE
Steph’s mission goes beyond products. She’s become a vocal advocate for natural skincare, hosting workshops and writing books to empower others. Her debut, Natural Apothecary: Create Your Own, is available on Amazon and offers practical guidance on crafting your own skincare.
She’s also working on a second book and has been a guest on several podcasts, sharing her expertise on holistic health and the beauty industry.
“Skincare is just one piece of the puzzle,” Steph explains. “Your overall health is connected to what you eat, how you sleep, and how you manage stress. I want to help people see the bigger picture.”
PASSION FOR BUSINESS AND EMPOWERING OTHERS
Starting a business isn’t easy, especially during a global pandemic. But for Steph, the leap to entrepreneurship was born out of a desire to create something meaningful. From her humble beginnings to now running a growing skincare brand, her journey is an inspiration to those looking to take control of their own destiny.
“My advice to anyone thinking about starting their own business is simple: stop being scared and just do it,” Steph says. “You don’t have to know everything from the start. I didn’t. But the key is to keep moving forward. Start small, learn as you go, and most importantly, trust in your passion.”

Love Heart Bears
A fun bake to get stuck into with your family!
INGREDIENTS:
Makes 10 bear cookies
• 225g plain flour, plus extra for dusting
• 150g unsalted butter, chilled
• 75g caster sugar
• Pink food colouring
• Line 2 large baking trays with baking paper and set aside on the countertop.
METHOD:
In a large bowl add the plain flour, unsalted butter and caster sugar. Rub the mixture between your fingers until a dough starts to form. This can take a few minutes, keep going with it.
Divide a small portion of the dough off and add pink food colouring.
Roll out your plain dough on a floured surface and use a bear cutter to cut out 10 bear shapes. Set aside the remaining dough. Place these onto the lined baking trays.
Roll out your pink dough on a floured surface and cut out 10 hearts. Place the hearts onto the bear. Using the leftover plain dough, make 2 small balls of dough for each bear and place these over the bear's hands to make it look like it’s carrying the heart. Do this for all 10 bears.
Using a cocktail stick make two eyes and a nose on each bear. Place the baking trays in the freezer overnight (this helps the bears to keep their shape).
When you are ready to bake, preheat the oven to 180°C and bake for 8-10 minutes until the edges start to turn golden. Leave to cool completely before enjoying.

FORCED ENGLISH RHUBARB & VANILLA BEAN
PANNA COTTA
Serves: 6
Force d English rhubarb is always the first ingredient I get excited about after Christmas. For me, it signifies that first glimmer of hope that spring is on the horizon with the longer days we have all been looking forward to. It’s a little like going to see your nanny and her saying “Ooooooohhhhhhhh aren’t the nights drawing out again!” That sharp, unique taste that reminds us of childhoodboiled sweets and long summers - that is why I’ve decided to show you this easy dish to show off this amazing, seasonal product and jump start our excitement that spring is just around the corner, when the daffodils will soon be blooming and the wild garlic bulbs peak out from beneath the undergrowth.
for the Panna Cotta
Ingredients:
• 1 Ltr Double Cream
• 150g Caster Sugar
• 1 Vanilla Pod, Halved & Seeds Removed
• 6 Leaves of Gelatine
METHOD:
Place the gelatine leaves in cold water and allow to soften. Place the cream, vanilla seeds, pod and sugar in a heavy based saucepan, slowly bring to the boil, then remove from the heat. Let the creamy mixture infuse for 10-15 minutes, then place back on the heat and bring back to a simmer. When simmering, squeeze your gelatine leaves dry and place in the simmering cream mixture and whisk until fully dissolved. Pass your mixture through a fine sieve to remove the vanilla pod. Pour into moulds of your choice, which can be as simple as a vintage tea cup. Place in the fridge to set for 4-6 hours.
for the Rhubarb Jelly
Ingredients:
• 1 Kg of Forced English Rhubarb
• 100g Caster Sugar
• 2 Tbsp Grenadine, Optional
• v200 Ml Water
• Gelatine Leaves
METHOD:
Place the rhubarb into a bowl with the caster sugar, Grenadine (optional) and water. Clingfilm the bowl and place over a pan of boiling water for 30 minutes. Remove the bowl after 30 minutes and strain your rhubarb juice through a muslin or kitchen towel, into a container. Weigh your juice and for every 500ml of liquid use 3.5 gelatine leaves. Prepare and mix in your gelatine leaves as you have done for the Panna Cotta. Once dissolved gently pour the rhubarb jelly over your set Panna Cotta and allow to firm up in the fridge.

Alice from ARTs - Craft Kitchen is celebrating winning her second 1-star Great Taste Award this year with her sumptuous Merry Berry Jam. A marriage of three wellsuited berries: blackberries, blueberries and raspberries. As quoted by the Great Taste judges this jam has 'an earthy, hedgerow aroma with a soft set and good fruit content. There is an excellent balance of tartness from the fruits and sweetness.'
THE TRAYBAKE
The queen of preserves shares another seasonal recipe
INGREDIENTS:
Serves 4
• 1 medium sized swede
• 1 x large sweet potato
• 2 x medium sized parsnip
• 2 x medium sized carrots
• 1 x Red onion
• 1 x White onion
• 3 cloves garlic, diced
• 3-4tbsp ART’s Sunrise Marmalade for glazing or more as needed
• Olive oil
METHOD:
Preheat the oven to 200˚C. Wash the swede, sweet potato, carrots, and parsnips. Peel the vegetables, leaving the skins on the carrots and parsnips if preferred. Cut the carrots and parsnips into batons, and the sweet potato and swede into 2cm cubes. Slice the onions into wedges and dice the garlic.
Put your chopped vegetables into the tin, keeping the onions and garlic aside for now. Lightly drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and black pepper. Pour the marmalade over evenly as a glaze.
Place the tin into the oven and roast for 15 minutes, then add the onion and garlic and roast for a further 20 minutes.
Once cooked, I recommend serving your vegetables with your choice of either chicken breast (boiledor roasted) or a bed of couscous.
POACHED EGGS ON TOAST WITH TOMATO & JALAPEÑO SALSA
Add a spicy twist to breakfast with a rich and tasty salsa instead of grilled tomatoes. It’s great for dunking fries, with soured cream to dip tortilla chips and to top grilled white fish, too.
Ingredients: Serves: 4
Prep Time: 15 minutes Cook Time: 35 minutes
• 8 essential Waitrose Tomatoes
• 4 jalapeño chillies, 2-3 (depending on taste) left whole, 1 deseeded and finely chopped
• 2 red onion, halved
• 1 tsp agave syrup
• 1 clove garlic, crushed
• 1 lime, cut into wedges
• 230g pack No.1 Free Range Unsmoked Streaky Bacon
• 4 British Blacktail Medium Free Range Eggs
• 4 slice/s Waitrose & Partners No.1 White Sourdough Bread
• ⅓ x 25g pack coriander, leaves picked
• 150ml Essential Soured Cream
METHOD:
Preheat the grill to high. Line a tray with foil and lay the tomatoes, 2 or 3 whole chillies (depending on taste) and onion halves on the tray. Grill for 20-25 minutes, turning occasionally, until uniformly blistered and well cooked.
Peel and discard the tomato skins and any jalapeño skin that’s turned papery. Add to a food processor with the remaining roasted vegetables, agave, garlic and a squeeze of lime juice. Season, then blitz until smooth. It should be quite thick and spreadable – if it’s too loose, transfer to a small pan and bubble over a medium-high heat for 3-5 minutes, stirring, until thickened.
Meanwhile, grill the bacon for 8-10 minutes, turning once, until crisp and golden. Poach the eggs to your liking and toast the bread.
Spread the salsa over the pieces of toast and put on 4 plates. Dollop over a little soured cream, then top with 2½ bacon rashers, a poached egg, a scatter of coriander leaves and finely chopped jalapeño. Serve with the remaining lime wedges for squeezing over.

Planning the big move in 2025
Begin your journey with Frank.
Ifyou’re thinking of planning a big move in 2025, where and how to begin your journey is the first big hurdle to overcome. Often the biggest questions I hear and also many vendors most di cult and often scariest predicament, do you list your home first or find your next home first?
From a professional perspective, listing first certainly comes with its advantages you just need to make wise and educated strategic moves with absolute faith in selecting the right agent to manage your move. First things first, if you have an existing mortgage, looking to upsize, downsize or simply port a current balance, exploring your financial options is a wise and key first step to establishing what is reality against what we can hope to achieve and don’t be afraid to shop around, you may be surprised at what savings can be found by seeking competitive deals across the financial market. Next up, it’s valuation time of your home, take a deep breath and prepare for the fun and games to begin.
Three valuations is often a good round number, it will give you the opportunity to meet enough di ering agents so you can begin to establish WHO will be the right agent for you, but also gain a good feel for what your home is REALISTICLY worth and yes we have capitalised this because reality is the key to success within a world of pie in the sky, instruction driven agents from the wrong side of town.
Remember, people do not move every day, you’re not supposed to know how this works, ask questions and do not be afraid to take things at your own pace, despite how pressurising some
Natalie Ward-Kerr Founder and Director www.frankestateagency.co.uk
agents can make you feel, this again will help you clarify who is going to best guiding hand for you. Now, a somewhat contentious debate, when should you start physical viewings…?
Viewing potential new homes is of course incredibly exciting, exploring di erent ages of building, modern new concepts and generally trying to find what is going to tick those important boxes for you, but let’s take a moment to remember, these houses are someone else’s treasured home, their sacred personal space, should you be intruding into this space if you’re NOT actually in a position to make an o er?? Now let’s be ‘FRANK’ about this situation, this is a topic of discussion that is highly debated and contentious and I can always see
both sides of the coin, however if you had your home on the market and had gone to the lengths that most people to do present their home, would you want people viewing it who are not in a position to buy it? I always compare it to when I was a young twenty something, window shopping a week before pay day. The harsh reality is, there is a high chance it will be gone by the time you can buy it.
For the majority of 2024, the houses which Frank had the pleasure to list and then sell, were for vendors who had not yet found their next home. This means that firstly, there was no impending panic to rush the marketing, we were given the chance to take our time and perfect every element of the marketing
strategy from carefully staged professional photography to a stylish editorial and then our nail biting social media secret leaks, eventuating in a perfect launch for each and every property. Then there is the marketing price, given that again there is no immediate panic to sell within 24 hours, we had the opportunity to test the market at the highest possible price. Now let’s not get this confused with ‘overpriced’ because that’s a whole another discussion, but ‘the highest possible price’ is where I feel we can test the market without having a detrimental e ect on the marketing as a whole. Then we can use our time wisely to achieve you the best possible price and as importantly from a buyer WHO CAN WORK TO YOUR TIMESCALES, a crucial factor when agreeing your sale.
This is the part that then entails complete and utter trust in your agent and their best interests for you and your home moving plan. Yes, I said it… TRUST. This is when we need to rewind in the process slightly, yes we believe you should market before you find but with an agent that you trust to relay the importance of time management to any potential buyers and to stress the time constraints that will involve you
being able to find your next property without worry or stress that you have to do this immediately. However, all being well you picked the right agent, so now having had the time to test the market and therefore achieve the best possible
would always put in place to protect your best interests, no it doesn’t always work but within this market, it is the only way in my opinion to move and my success rate so far proves that I believe this is the best advice.
Remember, people do not move everyday, you're not supposed to know how this works.
price, you are now free to explore the market as a ‘proceedable’ buyer, with a clear budget having sold with the added benefit of being taken seriously by selling agents. Yes, that all sounds perfect and I realise we are far from a perfect world, but in my experience if it is expertly managed by an experienced and honest agent, it doesn’t often go wrong. The worst that can happen, your buyer gets fed up waiting and they withdraw, in which case it just wasn’t meant to be, so we start again. No, it’s not always that simple and there are lots of caveats I
Equally, if you are reading this and you have already found your next dream home, Frank has been known to pull out all the stops and make it happen, no matter what it took!

SUSTAINABLE BEAUTY
by Liz Mobbs
Its a story that began in 2012 when I couldn’t find any flowers locally that I liked to make a bouquet for my mums birthday, and from there I had the idea of ‘growing my own’ on our farm in Cratfield, just outside Halesworth. I started on a small allotment size plot with a green house in 2012, and then in 2013 extended to half an acre and poly tunnel. My intention was to provide bunches and posies at the farm gate selling alongside free range eggs. This happily concided with a massive movement in the British flower growing industry and the need for more naturally and sustainable flowers, so I soon found myself running a small new business supplying buckets of blooms for DIY brides and a small amount of floristry and the odd PYO days on Saturdays once the wedding flowers had all been picked .. I have never been floristry trained, but just relied on my creative instincts and going with my own style.
I did all the sowing, growing and creating, but my passion was to have a PYO flower farm, I thought it was such a lovely thing to do and just wasn’t available in the Uk that I knew off
Running the business fitted around my then 3 young daughters, Rosalie, Eliza & Beatrix, who got involved not only in the odd ‘pricking out’ thousands of seedlings, but were my main models for promotional purposes as they grew older.. and still do!
In 2017 we moved to my home town of Southwold, and after finding a 5 acre piece of land just outside in Reydon, I was able to continue my flower farming, but this time being in a busy tourist town, my dreams of a PYO flower farm was a possibility. Firstly, we put a barn up and occupied a shop in Church Street, Southwold as a way of directly selling flowers to the public. Roger, my husband, who no longer had 28,000 hens to look after, joined me to set the business up, originally a temporary thing, but never left!
When Covid hit, we decided to shut the shop temporally in Southwold and trade from our new barn as it was bigger and safer and then set up a website for customers to ‘click & collect’ from the under the porch and also started a flower postal service for all around the uk for people who just wanted a fresh posy to arrive every week to cheer themselves up or ordered for friends and family.. we called this service ‘Friday Flowers’. As soon as we were able to, Roger also started delivering in the local area, this proved to be very popular, so we remained at the farm and didn’t return to the high street.
With no weddings to provide for, this was my opportunity to open the farm gates for PYO flowers, this was such a welcomed pastime for the locals, who for the first time could meet up with friends and family and keep their safe distance … it did wonders for mental health, as well as allowing children to run wild.
So, from then on we never closed the gates and never went back to
the high street, our farm became a destination and we made sure there was enough flowers for everyone, it felt right to remain at the farm and continue in providing all floristry services and workshops, and we have have gone from strength to strength, last year we held our first Christmas and Easter mini markets, fashion show and collaborations with other local businesses with ongoing events.
The PYO has grown quite considerably with the car park full from May to October, with day visitors, holiday makers and locals, all enjoying the wonderful experience, I like to think we are more than just a flower shop, but more of a community here at the flower farm, a place to give adults and children space to relax, unwind and slow down from their modern hectic lives… and more importantly, be inspired by our field and barn, and take that creativity home with them.
After 11 years of flower farming and designing, I’m still as passionate about flowers as I ever was, I still get excited by buying seeds, creating an floral installation and coming up with new ideas, I really hope my passion reflects in all aspects of makes The Southwold Flower Co what it has become and what it will become in the future.
I’m looking forward to sharing ideas and projects with you all year, I hope to cover not only how to grow your own flowers in your back garden, but teach you how to condition and care for your flowers for longevity of vase life as well as arrange them and getting creative. There are so many vessels that you can display flowers in apart from a standard hand tied vase, I look forward to exploring these with you.
The growing season is about what is available to you throughout the year, either in your garden, hedgerows or legal foraging. I plan to guide you in sustainability floristry as well as some gorgeous wreath creating, plant arrangements, table scaping, whether you are growing your own or sourcing from your local market, super market or florists, we will also be touching on dried as well as fresh as that has become hugely popular in the last few years and also so easy to grow and dry in your own home.
Everything I create or share will be accessible for all and the plan is to encourage creativity with enjoyment and no pressure, despite what you may think, there are no rules in floristry, its an art form that is personal to you, and should never be judged.
It’s not going to be easy.
Like any addiction, breaking the habit takes effort.
You IT'S ALL ABOUT
Are you addicted to Sugar?
Probably. Most of us are. I mean, what’s not to love?
When the weather’s grim, or the kids are driving us up the wall, reaching for a handful of sweets or a few squares of chocolate (or the whole bar if things are really chaotic) makes everything feel better… well, for about a minute, until we need more of the stuff. Manufacturers of sugary treats—the little swines—know exactly what they’re doing. They create these irresistible, highly addictive foods
that somehow feel like an essential part of life. As if, without them, we just can’t cope. They’ve also nailed whatever magic makes it impossible to stop at just one bite. Think about it—this doesn’t happen with other foods. How often have you eaten one banana and then gone on to devour the whole bunch? Unless you’re reading this from the monkey enclosure at the zoo, probably never, right?
Breaking the Sugar Addiction
So, how do we break this sugar addiction? Do you want the good news or the bad news first? Let’s get the bad out of the way so we can end on a positive note, shall we? The bad news? It’s not going to be easy. Like any addiction, breaking the habit takes effort. You’ve heard the saying, “Old habits die hard”.It’s true. But here’s the good news: I’ve made up a new saying—“Old habits die pretty quickly ”, catchy, right?! And the truth is, within just two weeks, you can take control of your sugar cravings. Here’s my best advice to help you kick the habit:
Make Sugar Invisible
Out of sight, out of mind! Keep sugary snacks out of your house and avoid situations that trigger cravings, like boredom or stress.
Reframe the Craving
Flip the script. Sugar isn’t a reward— it’s an energy drainer. Think about what it actually does to you: weight gain, energy crashes, and that endless craving cycle.
Create Friction
Make sugar harder to get. If you really want a treat, you’ll need to leave the house for it. Stock up on natural swaps like fruit or nuts for when the munchies hit.
Reduce the Pleasure
Set boundaries around sugar. Maybe it’s only allowed after dinner—not whenever the mood strikes. And if you overdo it, attach a consequence: an extra workout or a night out with the in-laws— haha!
Build Better Habits
Balanced meals with protein, healthy fats, and fibre help curb cravings. Stay hydrated, and when stress hits, swap sugar for a walk, yoga, or a quick workout.
Redefine Yourself
Start telling yourself, “I’m someone who chooses foods that energise me.” Celebrate the little wins—like choosing fruit over chocolate. Those small steps add up!
A Success Story...
Breaking Free from Sugar: How
SHRED 8 helped Victoria overcome sweet cravings and transform her health.
“I’ve always been slim and never had issues with my weight—I’m one of those annoying people who could eat anything. But suddenly, I felt bloated, my jeans didn’t fit, and I thought, enough is enough. I was working out loads—CrossFit, running, yoga—but something felt off.
I started realising that my late-night sugar binges were leaving me bloated, sluggish and stuck in a cycle I couldn’t break. My relationship with food wasn’t great. I skipped meals, struggled with meal prep, and by 9 pm, I’d devour a big pack of sweets or a chocolate bar. My sugar cravings were completely out of control. That’s when I joined Shred 8, a programme that gave me the structure and support I needed, and with Evan’s guidance, I turned it all around.
One of my biggest tests came when I took my son to a sweet shop. Normally, I’d grab something for myself without a second thought, but this time, I resisted. It was tough, but it felt like a win. Changing my diet, especially cutting back on sugar, completely transformed my fitness and my body. It wasn’t easy— breaking sugar cravings in the first week was hard—but the programme taught me discipline and completely changed my relationship with food and sugar. It’s about so much more than weight loss; it’s about taking control of cravings, building discipline, and improving overall health—everything from diet, sleep, and stress to exercise and mindset.
It’s the best money I’ve ever spent. I feel proud of the transformation I’ve made, and I have Evan to thank for helping me finally feel in control.”
So, before we wrap this up, let’s give a big shoutout to Victoria for sharing her inspiring story—amazing work, Victoria! Many of us feel like we can’t live without sugar—no surprise, given its addictive nature, often compared to substances like cocaine. But after just a few rough days (withdrawals can be a bugger), you’ll come out the other side feeling incredible and wondering why you didn’t ditch the stuff sooner.
SUGAR RUSH: The sweet addiction we're breaking up with
Addictive qualities:
Studies show sugar activates the same reward pathways in the brain as drugs like cocaine, making it highly addictive for many people. Sugar increases dopamine levels in the brain, which can create a rewardseeking behaviour similar to drug addiction.
The “bliss point”: Food manufacturers engineer products to hit the "bliss point"—a precise combination of sugar, fat, and salt designed to make foods irresistible.
Better energy without it: Reducing sugar intake leads to more stable energy levels, better sleep, and improved mental clarity.
Cravings reduce quickly: Research suggests that sugar cravings can diminish significantly after just 7–14 days of reducing intake.
Withdrawal is real: Reducing sugar can lead to withdrawal symptoms like headaches, fatigue, and irritability, much like breaking other addictions.
JOANNE... 12 Week Update:
Balance, Buzz & Breakthroughs
And just like that, we've hit the 12-week mark! Three months— wow, where has that gone? It really is true what they say: "Time fl ies when you're having fun." Well, Joanne is mostly having fun—apart from the workouts, which aren't her biggest love. More on that in a mo.
Another incredible month for Jo— she's completely in the zone now. She's shed another 4 kg, bringing her total weight loss to nearly 16 kg (2.5st) since day one! That's just mental— proper chicken oriental. Sorry for the silly Cockney rhyming slang, but I thought that would tie nicely into Jo's one little indulgence this month: her decision to say, "Sod it, I'm having a Chinese tonight."
Jo gave in to a craving for a chicken chow mein but, within a few mouthfuls, started to feel dehydrated, sluggish, bloated, and frustrated with herself for giving in–all these feelings she hadn't felt since we started. "It really wasn't worth it", she said. And that’s
I don’t even know why I put it off because when I push myself to work out, I get such a buzz from it.
where the magic of this process really kicks in! I always encourage my clients to occasionally include all kinds of food—even the indulgent ones— because it’s about learning how those choices make you feel and using that awareness to guide your decisions. Over time, you stop eating based on what you feel you should do and start making choices that truly support your mind and body. That’s the ultimate transformation, and Jo is pretty much there.
Apart from the Chinese, Jo has had a few pre-planned nights out where she swapped wine for gin and tonic and made smarter food choices to align with her new way of eating. She’s ticked every box again—well, except the workouts.
Jo's original struggle to avoid crisps has now been replaced by the struggle to work out. When I asked why—time,
energy, or just plain dislike?—she said, "All of the above" (haha). But she admitted, "It’s not so much lack of energy, as that has improved so much. I don’t even know why I put it off because when I push myself to work out, I get such a buzz from it. Time is a little tight, but that’s no excuse." So, we’ve adjusted her workout plan to more suitable days and reduced to two sessions a week. Let’s see how Jo gets on next month.
Jo has been receiving compliments left, right, and centre—not just on her physical transformation but on how her whole persona has changed. People have described her as seeming 'lighter,' more energised, and generally radiating positivity.
Keep smashing it, Jo. Maybe reconsider the chow mein next time, and let's see if you can make those two weekly workouts happen!
WHAT IS THERAPY?

Thenumber of people accessing talking therapy has been on the rise in recent years, more commonly discussed, and seen as a growing trend on social medias. The NHS reported that there was a 21.5% increase in the number of people using talking therapy between 2021-2022. But it can be difficult to know what to expect from the experience of therapy. The concept of talking about your life seems simple, but the complexity of modern living can mean there is little time to reflect.
Therapy is an allotted time, usually weekly, of 50 minutes for yourself to sit with an unbiased, non-judgmental outside perspective of a professional. The process is unique to each person but aims to help clients move toward a more fulfilled and authentic life. In doing so, the therapist hopes to help the client gain awareness, understanding and acceptance of what they have been through in their life.
What are the different approaches of therapy offered now?
Over the years, there have been many different psychotherapists that have made the case for ‘the best’ kind of therapy. This started with the likes of Freud and Jung in ‘Psychodynamic’ therapy, evolved with Rogers in his ‘Person-Centred’ approach and met Beck’s ‘Cognitive Behavioural’ therapy. The most recent wave of Integrative Therapy is a culmination of all of those that have come before.
But what do each of these types of therapy really focus on?
Historically, Psychodynamic theories carved the way as the first main form of talking therapy. This approach tends to focus on early relationships and experiences in childhood, with the therapist noticing patterns in attachments. It can be helpful to look back at the past to gain insight into the present, as being aware of unhelpful patterns can be the key to changing them in the present. The psychotherapist may be directive in challenging their client, with the aim to help them move through difficult feelings and towards growth.
Person-Centred Therapy emerged as a counter approach to psychoanalysis. The foundational part of the therapy offered by the therapist being empathy, meeting at a deeper emotional level and unconditional positive regard. With a much less directive style, the therapist offers a safe space for the client, to move at a comfortable pace, and trust in the client to share what they need to. In this case, the therapist is less directive and acts more as a guide, walking beside the client, rather than leading them. The aims would be for the client to move toward the best version of themselves.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is now likely the most well-known modality of therapy, referred to as CBT. At its roots, the concept is that our thoughts, feelings and behaviours are linked, and in turn we can challenge, alter and improve them. Currently, the NHS offers a brief version of this therapy (6-12 weeks) which can greatly aide patients in the short term. Historically, the therapy was longer term and aimed to move clients away from automatic negative thought processes. The therapist would work with the client to come up with ways to challenge these patterns - negative thoughts, leading to unhappy feelings, resulting in maladaptive behaviours. These challenges may start in the therapy room but aim to help the client notice and alter it for themselves in day-to-day life as well.
The newest wave of therapy is known as Integrative Psychotherapy. This approach has blended the most effective and helpful parts of therapies that have
come before, standing on the shoulders of giants. It is unique to each therapist practising as to which theories they feel most aligned with, keeping in mind the common factors of each: growing understanding for the client, moving through painful parts of life, and the dynamic between client and therapist. The therapist will use their expertise of each approach, as well as their growing understanding of the client to attune to what the client will find most beneficial, to help them move toward an authentic and genuine life.
Some helpful things to know
Finding a therapist may feel tricky, and sometimes it takes reaching out and meeting with a few to find one that’s a good fit
A therapist will maintain complete confidentiality unless they are worried for your welfare or that of a child
The process of therapy isn’t linear and can often feel worse before it feels better
There are different specialties for therapists depending on the clients’ needs, e.g. family, relational issues, anxiety, addiction, depression, etc.
Whilst diagnostic labels can be helpful, they are not held in therapy the same way they are in the medical field
Working online can have just as much value as face to face and has become more popular in the last couple of years (1 in 5 pre-pandemic, 1 in 3 now)
Each approach has been tried and tested over decades, and it is wholly down to what the client is looking for, and what works best for them. Finding a therapist can be tricky, but websites such as BACP, Counselling Directory and Psychology Today are a great place to start. They hold a directory of registered and qualified therapists which can be filtered based on expertise and location. It may take a little time but finding a therapist you feel comfortable speaking to is integral to the experience of therapy.
