The prolonged spell of dry, hot weather has brought its own challenges, but it has meant a bumper summer of tourism for Beccles and has helped the successful return of many events and groups, including the Hospital Fete. newly revised ‘The Official Town Council Guide to Beccles’ is available to visitors and residents. I’d like to thank the various businesses and organisations in the town that are now hosting Visitor Information Points, which contain a wide variety of leaflets. The Bell Tower (now open on Wednesdays as well as on Fridays and Saturdays) with its spectacular views is proving a very popular attraction. Full details of opening times are on the Council’s website. It is a delight to see the flower displays around the town looking so good despite the weather; and I’d like to thank the team of volunteer Community Gardeners for their hard work. Well done also to the volunteers responsible for the floral displays at the station. Thanks too to the Beccles Bombles who are out every week collecting litter. The Town Council is currently looking at improving some of the public spaces in town. Our contractor has repaired the benches outside the King’s Head, and they look excellent. We will also be looking at the layout of the benches in Exchange Square and in the garden area by the Fire Station.Wehave several new litter bins for various locations around the town, which should be in place in the next few weeks. These bins all have lids, which should help to deter gulls, a continuing problem for residents. Several species of gull are protected by law, so it is hard to deal with them. The Town Council will be writing to several property owners to find out more about the problem and suggest deterrents.AsMayor I have been pleased to attend several events, including several at our local schools that work very hard to uphold the long tradition of high-quality education in Beccles. The Council will shortly be starting work on a Strategic Development Plan. We will be including projects already in hand, considering current issues and drawing on the Neighbourhood Plan which gained the approval of residents in a referendum last year.

Have you ever wondered what is the oldest building in Beccles or why so many of the town's streets have 'gate' as part of their name? And did Beccles people ever have the sea on their doorstep, as some people have claimed? You may well find the answer in Secret Beccles, recently published by Beccles historian Barry Darch. The book, which follows the success of the author's Beccles Through Time, explores some of the less well-known aspects of the town's history. Chapters include 'Fake News' and one about the town's heroes and villains. A particular feature is the 'Did You Know?' section of each chapter. For example, did you know that the town once had a 'swanner' who was paid to look after the Delving deep into Beccles' hidden past swans in the river? Secret Beccles is copiously illustrated and includes historic images as well as some specially commissioned drawings and photographs. Dr Darch said: "With a past stretching back to AngloSaxon times and beyond and having been for centuries the third town of Suffolk, Beccles has yielded many fascinating nuggets of history that deserve to be shared. Secret Beccles is dedicated to the many generous people past and present who have staffed and supported the medical facilities of Beccles."

Around 100 BACT supporters came together to celebrate BACT's 25th anniversary in July 2022. When BACT was kindly offered the use of the beautiful and tranquil open gardens in Ringsfield, belonging to BACT volunteers Jan Barlow and Steve Watson, it was too good an opportunity to miss. The winter months were spent planning the 'Garden Party' treat. The aim was to bring service users, staff, volunteers, and supporters together to commemorate 25 years of BACT service. Not only to recognize the wonderful service provided by BACT and all involved in its continuing success, but also to demonstrate the resilience and cooperation shown throughout the times of Covid and beyond. The weather was perfect. The guests included Peter Aldous MP, several local Suffolk and East Suffolk councillors, business owners and charity representatives and several of regular passengers accepted who were transported to the garden on BACT's minibuses, driven by BACT volunteer drivers. Throughout the afternoon, music was played by the wonderful Waveney brass band and guests were sung to by the talented Martin Sisley (The Mod One). There were informative tours of the vast and perfect gardens. These were accessible to all via a golf buggy kindly donated for the day! There were games with fabulous winning prizes and a 'BACT knowledge' quiz to encourage everyone to take part in the fun, as well as a wonderful array of refreshments provided by Bigods, Bungay. Established in 1977, this year see’s the ladies at Clean ‘n’ Dry Launderette celebrate their 45th anniversary. Initially started by their mother, Ellen, the business is now run by sisters Sharon and Sheralee with youngest sister Lorraine helping out when necessary.In1977 the average house price in the UK was under £13,000 and Queen Elizabeth II celebrated a landmark year with her Silver Jubilee having spent 25 years on the throne. Well, this year the Queen marked another huge landmark year with the fantastic Platinum Jubilee celebrations we witnessed. However, the average house price these days is over £280,000! It is fair to say things have moved on. What has not changed is the fantastic service you will always get when you visit Clean ‘n’ Dry. This business has been a fixture at the heart of Bungay for such a long time they have become an important part of the community.Elleninstilled a real sense of work ethic and fun in her daughters and this is very much in evidence when you visit the busy shop. Sheralee explains that moments of peace are rare, they are always working the machines, pressing clothes and serving customers – but they wouldn’t have it any other way! It is little wonder the team here are always busy, Clean ‘n’ Dry offer a full range of washing, dry-cleaning and pressing services to both domestic and commercial customers. The first aspect of the business you will see is the self-service launderette at the front of the shop which is open seven-days-a-week 7.30pm to 5pm. Customers can choose to wait or book in for a service wash and collect their washing at a time the suits them later in theTheday. second aspect of the business is dry-cleaning. The team here can dry-clean anything and everything from a small load to the largest most ornate gowns, horse rugs to duvets and everything in-between. Using a chemical free system called Aquatex allows them to clean delicate and precious textiles, but the benefits go beyond that. The team chose to go chemical free over 25 years ago as it is not only kinder on the material, it is better for the environment and safer for them to use day to day. The third aspect here is pressing and ironing. Clean ‘n’ Dry offer a full linen service (wash, dry and press) for commercial and domestic customers. Using industrial and high-power irons as well as specialist pressing equipment for suits, shirts and dresses, all work is handled with ease. What really strikes you here though is the sense of community. Sharon and Sheralee serve customers who have been using the launderette since the first week it opened! They were always taught that customers are to be addressed as Mrs or Mr and this has remained. Over the years they have built up a huge number of regular customers who have become great friends and an extended family. They look out for one another, offering a friendly ear when needed and share plenty of jokes and fun along the way. On the back of one of the hottest summers in recent years they have opened and worked as normal to continue to deliver the service they have become renowned for. Bear in mind this is not an air-conditioned office, it is a business that uses industrial irons and pressing equipment but the ladies did not want to let down any of their loyal customers. It is lovely to see a longestablish family business still running and thriving on the old-fashioned values of service and customer care that were ingrained all those years ago. This approach has stood the test of time and looks set to continue for a good while longer. Leisure Centre and Waveney Valley Leisure Centre, run by award-winning operator Everyone Active in partnership with East Suffolk Council, are taking part in the new initiative to reduce the barriers between children and young people participating in sport and physical activity. The free membership will give them access to a range of facilities depending on their age, including gym, swim, soft play, and group exercise. According to latest figures from the Department for Education for children looked after (CLA) in England, the number of children in care is at an all-time high, at more than 80,000 children or 67 in every 10,000.This year, Everyone Active launched its national Community Health and Wellbeing Strategy, with the aim to meet the needs of individual communities through programmes that support people to be physically active, and to feel happy and healthy. In the past, this event has been attended by the general public from all over East Anglia because it is more than just an exhibition of club members images. There will be two talks both morning and again in the afternoon covering a varied selection of photography and image editing demonstrations as well as a used camera equipment stall, camera craft advice, pick-a-bottle stall and the reopening of the World Famous?, well, much loved, Happy Snapper Café. Where one of the best selection of savouries, cakes, biscuits, teas, coffee and soft drinks will be on sale once again!

The answer is, sadly, that many of them go into the sea as one of Transition Woodbridge’s members found one day in July. We were sailing in the area just off the entrance to the River Orwell, near Harwich and enjoying the warm, sunny weather when we spotted a balloon in the water. We don’t like litter anywhere but litter in the sea is a particularly serious problem so we set about picking it up with the litter picker we carry onboard. It was a Happy 80th Birthday balloon. But that was only the first. The next one was a big blue number three, probably for a little boy’s 3rd birthday. So, we pulled that out too. Over the next two hours we picked up four more balloons, some with long trailing plastic string attached. There were at least three more that we saw but they were carried away by the strong tide before we could get to them. For most of us balloons add a bit of fun to a party or celebration. But what happens to the balloon after the party? When a heliumfilled balloon is released to float up and away it may look lovely but you have no control over where it goes. Eventually it will fall to earth and could land anywhere. Wherever they end up balloons are a problem, nowadays they are made of plastic and will last for years and when they do degrade, they break up into tiny pieces that are impossible to remove from the environment. If a balloon lands in farmland it can be a danger to livestock. Cattle have choked on balloons. A balloon (or a plastic bag) that lands in the sea can be mistaken for food by turtles, dolphins, seals, whales and porpoises. Many thousands of sea mammals die each year from eating plastic including balloons. The animals can slowly starve to death as the digestive tract is blocked by the rubbish from which it gains no nourishment.Theincredibly strong plastic string can cause death or injury too as the creatures easily get tangled up in it. We’re sure none of the people who bought these balloons intended any harm and the 80-year-old and the 3-year-old who were given them would be very upset to think their balloon might have hurt any creature. If you receive a balloon, please make sure that after the party the balloon ends up in the right place – the bin - so that it can be disposed off safely and cause no harm. At the same time Transition Woodbridge will have litter pickers available for anyone who would like to collect litter along the riverside paths and nearby car parks, streets and parks. At various cafes in Woodbridge and at McColls in Melton you can find Five Minute Litter Pick kits set up by Transition Woodbridge with funding from The Suffolk Coast and Heaths AONB. If you see litter in the area and you have a little time to spare, please use the litter pickers to move the rubbish into a nearby bin. And remember, Jason Alexander continues to lead his Rubbish Walks around Woodbridge, starting at 10am at the Tea Hut on the last Sunday of every month. Ten club members enjoyed the cruise to Lowestoft and Southwold, the weather was sunny, with fresh south easterly winds, making a pleasant sail. Thanks go to Steven Lines, our commodore for organising this cruise, and Andy our cruise captain. SADs (safe arrival drinks) were held on the first night in Lowestoft, with a welcome meal at The Royal Norfolk and Suffolk Yacht Club. Boats then departed for Southwold, making a fast passage, and on the return trip boats overtook GB Row Endurance, with six rowers on their way to Tower Bridge from Lowestoft.Cruising in company, and the social activities are surely some of the best reasons for joining Woodbridge Cruising Club, this is especially true for voyages to the continent, or to newMembersdestinations.arelooking forward to future cruises, with voyages abroad to Belgium and France, and the Blackwater a perennial favourite, followed by the Three Rivers and end of cruising supper at RHYC, on the River Orwell. News flash - We have moved! In August the Gym moved into its new permanent home in the Library Annexe, Church Plain Loddon. We have sole use of the Hall and so we can leave the equipment in place and extend our opening times. We held our 24-Hour Tennis Marathon on 30/31st July (10am Saturday to 10am Sunday) to raise money through sponsorship for East Anglian Air Ambulance – a great cause and towards a new tennis club hut adjacent to our courts at Maltings Pavilion, Ditchingham. At least 25 members took part (and others who were away also made a donation) on court to cover the 24-hour period –right through the night and believe it or not – with some rain – that did not stop play! We were also lucky enough to obtain some support from local businesses and from Tindall’s brewery at Seething – who donated a bottle of beer (to go with BTC 24 Hour Marathon medals) to all those who took part. The Ekiden Relays are an annual team running event for the whole family and involve running the equivalent distance of a Marathon ( 26.2 miles ) but broken down into 6 shorter distances. ( 1x7.2K, 2x 10K and 2x 5K ). So, we had two teams of 6 adults and four teams of juniors – running just 1.1 miles each. This is the first time the event has taken place since the Pandemic and included 142 adult teams and 40 junior teams.Although all BBH teams

One of the joys of Beccles is its river, the Waveney. Over the years it has provided much pleasure to Beccles inhabitants and is at its best in the summer months with the many activities it supports.Beccles has had a sailing club since the early 1900s and for many years the river provided the town with its first swimming pool, a small area boarded off from the river which very adequately served its purpose until the new pool was built in 1959. However, for some time many of the leading lights of the town felt strongly that not enough use was made of the river when it came to organised sports and the idea of setting up a rowing club was formed. One such Support for Beccles Rowing Club by Beccles Townlands charity individual was Fred Taylor, a prominent tradesman in the town and keen sportsman who encouraged and taught many youngsters to swim, and it was he who helped form the Beccles Rowing Club in 1989. Later, Robin de Vere Green and Jon Bartram, among others, were driving forces in developing theInclub.the early days the club operated from an old shack between the river and the swimming pool which meant that the boats had to have the riggers removed after every outing to allow them to fit back in! To begin with all the boats and equipment were rather old and were either donated or sold to the club at a very reasonable cost by other clubs. Another came well down the list of honours ( 103rd and 136th for the adults ) everybody enjoyed the comradery of running for a team and were always supportive of others during their rather hot run – whether it was 5K, 7.2K or 10K.

Halesworth Pumas Cricket Club Firstly, sorry for forgetting to report since last season. Rather than go over old ground, the team met for pre-season shed painting, sight screen building and repairing, and covers rebuilding in May, and welcomed new players Lucien West and Fab Woljung into the fold. Losing twice to Saxmundham, beating and losing to Gillingham, Narrowly beating new friends Worlingworth, and a tense victory over Thorpeness has meant a shaky start to this year, but with just over half the season to go, its looking good so far. For those not in the know, pub cricket has no league, just friendlies. It's mainly T20 format and the rules are strictly fun, all fielders must bowl (except the wicket keeper) and there is no LBW rule in play as the umpires are often enjoying themselves somewhat.Withgames coming thick and fast, and mostly away for the next month, (at Saxmundham, Worlingworth, Thorpeness, London and Hales, and Topcroft) and a provisional friendly against "Rum Old Boys" in August it's easy to forget the bigger things. So this is a mid season thank you to some very important people. Firstly, Davey Sheds, whom have erected a lovely new toilet at our Rumburgh ground, It's a fantasticSecond,facility.Stella and Ty at the Rumburgh Buck, along with their amazing team, Keeping us fed and watered on match-days. Then, Metfield hero Nick Barnes, whom has provided the club with seven pairs of batting gloves, and over 40 match balls, Thank you Nick. Also, big thanks to Steve, Roger, Piet, Richard and Sange for keeping our pitch perfect and us connected with the Rumburgh Community. (Which includes the Buck Quiz too). We should also wish good luck to our own Niall "9 Iron" Excell, who has taken an offer to join the Navy, we could not be prouder of our fine young batter, although we have now got to find someone to fill that small shirt. Beccles weather report - July 2022 on my entire record and also the warmest night. 34.6C and 34.5C were recorded on consecutive days, Monday 18th only just higher than Tuesday 19th, although 19th had the warmest night minimum of 20.7C, the first "tropical night" (20C or better). For these two days (and the 17th and 20th) this situation occurred because a plume of moderated hot air was drawn from much further south where temperatures have regularly exceeded 40C. Previous hottest days were 34.2C on 12/08/1995 and 34.0C on 18/08/2012 and warmest nights of 19.8C on 08/08/2004 and 23/07/2019.Themean temperature was almost 2C warmer than average. Warmest month of any since August 2020 and warmest July since 2018, also ranks seventh warmest average maximum of any on entire record (commencing 1968). Following a first week of near average temperatures compared to average, first 25C day of the month was not reached until 8th. The remaining 23 days saw that figure achieved or bettered on a further 11 occasions, of which 27C (80F) or better noted on eight days. To gain some perspective of this achievement, only three days recorded 25C or better during July 2021.Nights of 14.0C or better were noted on a total of 14 occasions during the month, of which seven fell no lower than 17.0C. Lowest maximum of 20.7C and lowest minimum of 9.2C were both credited to the fifth. All this was possible because of persistent high pressure which repelled the few rain bearing fronts from the Atlantic from giving us any significant amounts. The rainfall total of 0.13" made the month the driest July (0.17" in July 1983 previous low) and also the equal third driest on entire record with March 2011. Only April 2007 (nil) and May 2020 (0.08") have been drier. During the period 1st to 23rd July just 0.02" was recorded on 20th. It was not until 30th when the "wettest" day of the month was observed to record 0.08". The last rainfall of any note occurred on 30th June when 0.50" fell and at time of writing now seems a very distantThismemory.long dry spell is becoming very worrying for a number of industries, especially agriculture. Just 8.33" of rainfall has fallen during this year so far. Coffee Mornings – The last one on July 16th raised the welcome sum of £76 for church funds. The next will be on August 20th and September 17th. See you there. Coffee Stop - on Tuesday mornings from 10:15am to Emmanuel Church 11:30am is still growing. Coffee is free. Company is good. Do come and visit. Christian Aid - On Saturday July 23rd at 7pm in the church there was held ‘A Summer Singalong’ musical event. It was very well attended, and we enjoyed singing our favourite songs from the shows or hymns. £5 per head was charged to include tea and cake and we managed to raise £200 for Christian Aid. Many thanks to all who came. The CA Committee also invited us to come and enjoy one of their famous cream teas in the front garden on Sunday August 14th from 3pm– to 5pm The weather was very kind, and a good time was had by all. Harvest – Our festival service will take place this year at 10:45am on Sunday September 18th and will be led by Mr. Graham Gibbs. All welcome. Luncheon Club - Meetings begin again on Friday September 9th at 12:30pm. Wednesday Games Afternoon - Sessions are now on the fourth Wednesday of every month in the Orange Hall.
