Celebrating the success of Karen and David Smith who, between them, are now a fantastic six stonesKarenlighter!was recently voted the 5:30pm group “Woman of the Year” thanks to her inspiring story. She had been a member before but, following an operation, three and a half stones had crept back on. David was fit and healthy until three years ago when he had a stroke and was then diagnosed with M.E (also known as chronic fatigue syndrome) 12 months later, making mobility difficult and gaining weight too. It was through a friend posting on social media about the One Life Suffolk referral scheme that prompted them to enquire. As they met the relevant criteria, they could now join the Halesworth Slimming World group with 12 weeks of slimming completely FREE! They soon discovered that they could eat lots of normal food would never have to go hungry AND would lose weight too! Because we know that losing weight is more than just food, they found that staying to group every week was invaluable, picking up lots of helpful hints and tips and recipe ideas too! Nine months on and both are within a few lbs of their personal achievement target weight and are enjoying the benefits of losing weight – Karen no longer gets out of breath whilst at work and David has less weight on his joints which makes walking easier.Tofind out whether you too could qualify for 12 weeks of FREE slimming, visit onelifesuffolk.co.uk and find “Slimming World Offer” under the Adult Weight Management section.Halesworth Slimming World meets at The Rifle Hall every Tuesday – 9:30am, 5:30pm and 7pm. For more information, please contact Bev Hansey 07912 849995. Putting a spring in their step thanks to Slimming World
A new website by Derek Newby tells some of the history of his family members who were born in Halesworth and remained there for most of their lives. He highlights his brother Donald's determination to prevent the Ipswich to Lowestoft railway line from being closed and the fact that Halesworth has a railway connection to London, an incentive to many people seeking to live or retire to the area. The website also tells of his father's memories in the books he wrote on the history of The Patrick Stead Hospital, Independency in Halesworth and District, and some historical facts and stories of old www.newbysofhalesworth.comHalesworth. What do you think of Halesworth’s wayfinding and signage? If you were a visitor arriving by train, could you easily find your way to the Thoroughfare? From the car parks, could you find the Millennium Green or the shops in or near the Market Place? Do the present signs and information boards give a good impression of the town? What sites and attractions, walks and shops do you think people should know about?Ifyou have a view, positive or negative, then come along to a public meeting at St Mary's Church, 5pm to 7pm, Tuesday 13thASeptember.Wayfinding and Signage Project is now underway in Halesworth. The Neighbourhood Plan and the Connectivity Report, commissioned by the Town Council, identified improvements to wayfinding as one way to support the economic and cultural future of the town. The aim is to celebrate the unique character of Halesworth, as well as make its attractions more visible and easier to find for visitors and residents alike including those with neurological and visual difficulties. A good signage system that helps you find your way around a town and enhances the look and feel of the place encourages more visitors to explore and spend money in the town. A poor system that makes the streets seem cluttered, is out of date, unclear and a bit tatty might mean they don’t come back. Money has been raised to carry out the design phase for a new system and a steering group, comprising representatives of the Town Council, the Neighbourhood Plan Group, Halesworth Tourism Group and East Suffolk Council has been working behind the scenes to recruit Peter McGrail of Streetwise, www. streetwisesystems.com/ a specialist in the development of wayfinding and on-street visitor engagement systems.
Halesworth Town Council manufacturing details, ready for the implementation stage next year. Please come along to the meeting on the 13th September.

Peter will be in Halesworth for the week beginning the 12th September to take a good look at the town, its many assets and attractions, and to engage with local people and organisations to find out what they think is needed to make Halesworth’s system better. This information will feed into a report from Streetwise that will give us design suggestions, costings and

Our plan is about identifying the things that were most important for you about our Town. It is about preserving what we like but also looking at ways we can improve and bring new impetus to the Town by encouraging new business, making more of our heritage and bringing visitors to the Town for the benefit of all of us. With your help, we have highlighted six key heritage assets, so that we can protect the buildings that we love and appreciate. The Steering Group identified the Library, the Maltings at Station Yard, the Cross Ram offices and Patrick Stead Hospital, you added the New Reach and the Halesworth to Southwold Narrow Gauge Railway at Millennium Green. Our plan also seeks to attract small businesses, promoting and protecting small scale workspaces that can be rented on flexible terms such as Miles WardLinkedCourt. to that is our commitment to build on the great creative work that happens in Halesworth, so our plan supports the creation of gallery spaces, studio spaces and workshops. Our plan also talks about how new buildings are built. One of key objectives is about design: To maintain and enhance the character and heritage of Halesworth’s built environment whilst encouraging sympathetic contemporary design in new developments. That means that we don’t want new builds where every house looks the same, we want buildings to reflect the character of the town using colours and materials that do not look out of place. Think of the lovely higgledy piggledy nature of houses and buildings on Chediston Street or the Thoroughfare! Our plan is beginning to influence things now Halesworth Town Council are already beginning to act on some of our proposals like improved signage and wayfinding information for visitors and pedestrians. Look out for the notices about a Public Meeting in September to start taking these ideasTheforward.Town Council brought together local organisations to look at ways we can increase facilities and activities aimed at young people. Young people have been consulted over the summer. They are also committing £10,000 to increasing biodiversity and improving open spaces based on consultation with local people about the siting of trees, benches and bird boxes. And picking up on an action point in the plan the town council will later this year consult residents about requirements for a community hub on the land set aside on Dairy Farm. So what happens next?
Do you love the Green - the paths, the wildlife, the cows? How about taking on a four-year stint as a TheTrustee?Trust is entering an exciting and challenging period. Locally, new housing is bringing new volunteers and increasing use of the Green. Globally, climate change is affecting habitats for wildlife. As a Trustee of the Charity, you would help to plan how to embrace these and other changes while achieving the Trust’s aims and ensuring that the Charity is managed effectively.Halesworth Millennium Green was established to contribute to the life of the community by being accessible to locals and visitors alike, also to make a positive contribution to the local environment. This means that the Trustees’ task is to balance the needs of people with those of wildlife, both by hands-on management and by long-term planning. As a Trustee you would focus on long-term planning. All Trustees are volunteers, the Trust has no paid positions. Trustees serve for an initial period of four years. We’re looking for people to help specifically with administration, money management, events, and outreach. Contact thegreen@ halesworth.net for more information and details of how to apply.Meanwhile, we hope you’re appreciating the smart and useful dog poo-bag dispensers which have appeared. Halesworth dog walkers are an exceptionally responsible bunch, because compared with the number of dogs who enjoy the Green there is very little poo left lying about. However, there is always some, despite the four bins in different places on the Green. Now help is at hand: Steve Holman and the Halesworth Fairies have supplied dispensers at all four locations, and their volunteers will keep the dispensers topped-up. So, if you forget your own bags look out for the dispensers, near the four bins. Huge thanks to Steve and theVolunteersFairies. meet down on the Green every Wednesday morning at 9:30am at the containers (industrial estate entrance, near the rail and river bridges at Three Ways). Tools provided, bring a drink and nibble. The website millenniumgreen.halesworth.netwww. carries news of past and future events, photos, wildlife records, Love the Green? Help by becoming a Trustee history, and geology. Contact the Green directly on thegreen@ halesworth.net or – (only in an emergency) – on 07879 844143.
East Suffolk Council have selected an independent Examiner who will scrutinise our plan. Our plan is not deemed contentious and so we hope it should be a speedy process although the examiner may ask the Steering Group some questions. We will let you know. We hope that our Neighbourhood Plan will then go forward to a referendum perhaps in November/December 2022. We are so close now to having a plan for our Town, which apart from all the good policies and actions will bring more money to be spent locally. Do keep visiting the Halesworth Town Council Website and look out for news on Facebook and via social media. Thanks to you, our Neighbourhood Plan is ever closer to becoming a reality.

Whilst an Englishman’s Castle is often his Capital Gains Tax (CGT)-free home, it is not always the same for the garden. The garden size (including the footprint of the house) that is automatically exempt under the Principal Private Residence relief (PPR), is restricted to 0.5-hectare (approx. 1.25 acre in English) –and only then if the garden has not had any other (e.g.: agricultural or business) use. Gardens above 0.5ha may need to demonstrate that their size is consummate with the style and nature of the residence and is comparable to similar properties in the locale. For example, a manor house with 3ha of formal gardens may go unqueried, but an end-of- terrace house with a similarly sized garden could have an Ifissue.HMRC can prove that the grounds to a house are “excessive”, beyond that needed for reasonable enjoyment or that you are not using all of the land as a garden (e.g.: some areas are fenced off), they will seek CGT on any gain related to the excess.
HMRC generally take the view that a house and grounds come as a package when acquired. If you later increase the garden size or if the garden is not immediately adjacent to the residence, a PPR claim on everything becomes harder – especially if any of the land had been purchased at a different time. That said, the existence of a road between the house and garden is not insurmountable for PPR if the two are genuinely associated. Although land use at point of disposal is important, historical evidence (e.g., photographs) of usage can be vital. Unused and overgrown ground has been accepted as being part of a garden as have areas of woodland, other buildings, riverbanks and occasionally some paddocksalways with a view as to the size, usage and location of the land, and style and presence of the home. With the new 60-day requirement to report and pay any CGT on a disposal of a residential property, if a garden qualifies and later finding out that PPR is restricted will allow HMRC the potential to charge penalties for late declaration and payment of tax. It is better to check rather than assume. In August, we were delighted to take part in the St Mary’s Church programme of lunchtime recitals. The church was cool and the ‘reception’ was warm! Our selection of largely patriotic and traditional music (supplemented by information about each piece) appealed to the audience and we included a ‘have a go’ session. Thank you to the church team who made us welcome and provided refreshments. Our bells are now having a ‘health check’; we appreciate the support of Community Action Suffolk for providing us with a grant to have this vital work completed. Practices resume in September.Dogetin touch if you would like to book us for your group / organisation; we look forward to hearing from you. Current permission allows for a mix of commercial and residential use, although not suitable for residential use as it stands, the building could move to wholly residential use subject to a formal planning application. Any application could include the removal of later rear ground floor additions and informal roofing to create an attractive rear courtyard amenity space. Internally, the generous overall floor area and large individual floors could deliver a spectacular and distinctive dwelling. As the building is listed Grade II* by English Heritage no works, internally or externally, should be undertaken without prior consent.

Firstly, Sorry for forgetting to report since last season. Rather than go over old ground, the team met for pre-season shed painting, sight screen building and repairing, and covers rebuilding in May, and welcomed new players Lucien West and Fab Woljung into the fold. Losing twice to Saxmundham, beating and losing to Gillingham, Narrowly beating new friends Worlingworth, and a tense victory over Thorpeness has meant a shaky start to this year, but with just over half the season to go, its looking good so far. For those not in the know, pub cricket has no league, just friendlies. It's mainly T20 format and the rules are strictly fun, all fielders must bowl (except the wicket keeper) and there is no LBW rule in play as the umpires are often enjoying themselves somewhat.Withgames coming thick and fast, and mostly away for the next month, (at Saxmundham, Worlingworth, Thorpeness, London and Hales, and Topcroft) and a provisional friendly against "Rum Old Boys" in August it's easy to forget the bigger things. So this is a mid season thank you to some very important people.
• Undergone extensive restoration already following its purchase from Adnams in 2014.

Key features:
• Grade II* Listed with Commercial & Residential permission. Attik feel very privileged to be asked to market one of the oldest buildings in Suffolk, known as Blackdog Antiques in the heart of Halesworth. Occupying 3 floors, the building has a vast footprint of over 4,500 square feet with showrooms, workshops and offices. The building teems with history at every turn from its beams and cross-beams, wide floorboards and period leaded light windows. The building is predominantly Tudor, dating from 1570 and was originally 1 of 4 owned by the Walpoles. It was granted a wine licence in the 1600s and continued as licensed premises under the name of The Three Tuns until Adnams bought it in 1927. Since then, it’s had various guises including a private member’s club, until 2014, when the current owners bought it from Adnams forming Blackdog Antiques. The beautiful Tudor building has undergone major restoration and is a treat to see.

We think actions speak louder than words so here are a selection of properties sold by us here at ATTIK this month which indicates there is still high demand and lots of buyers out there.
This month’s question comes from Mrs G Bateman who asks: “With house prices at an all time high but looking like they are slowing down, is now a good time to sell and are there still lots of buyers out there?”
The building has a significant and potentially adaptable floor area.
Firstly, Davey Sheds, whom have erected a lovely new toilet at our Rumburgh ground, It's a fantastic facility.Second, Stella and Ty at the Rumburgh Buck, along with their amazing team, Keeping us fed and watered on match-days. Also, big thanks to Steve, Roger, Piet, Richard and Sange for keeping our pitch perfect and us connected with the Rumburgh Community. (Which includes the Buck Quiz too). We should also wish good luck to our own Niall "9 Iron" Excell, who has taken an offer to join the Navy, we could not be prouder of our fine young batter, although we have now got to find someone to fill that small shirt. We're hoping to have a bit of a celebration match/day on Sept 4th, for anyone who wants to come along, although nothing is confirmed right now, food and drink should be on offer as well as some form of sporting entertainment as our long serving Spinner "The Polar Bear" is packing up playing. This summer has seen a few changes here at Ancient House – formerly Ancient House Bistro. The subtle change to the name reflects the new approach to what you will find at our beautiful town centre premises. We’re introducing a new Street Food inspired menu which has gradually evolved and adapted over time. The inspiration came during lockdown when we were spending more time at home, cooking crowdpleasing comfort food with a bit of a twist. Having always had a love of food from the far east it is a pleasure to now be serving up delicious street food from Thailand, Japan, Korea, Morocco, India, USA and the middle east to list a few!
The other big change is that this great new menu will all be available to eat in or takeaway. You will be able to order your takeaway through our brand-new website which makes everything super-easy and convenient. Takeaway is currently available for collection only, but we are looking at introducing a local delivery option in the coming months. Keep an eye out for our takeaway menu in next month’s Community News!
If you would like to get a sneak preview and sample some of the food you can see Dan in the Market Place on September 3rd where he will be hosting a cookery demo as part of the Heart of Halesworth celebration between 1.30-2pm. Come along, learn more about the food and ideas behind it and then best of all give it a Wetaste!look forward to welcoming customers old and new to Ancient House and are sure you will love our new-look food as much as we do! Halesworth's St. Mary's Church welcomed a packed audience when local soprano Alice Howell gave a classical concert of songs and arias based on dreams. The audience came from a wide area including holiday makers from Portugal.Alicegraduated from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance where she gained a First Class Honours Degree in Music Performance. The evening's entertainment was introduced by the Revd. Dominic Doble and the introductions to the songs were given by Alexander White, Alice's partner. She was accompanied by Susan Hoad on the piano. Alice sang ten pieces in German, French, Italian and English. The first three were written by German composers Hugo Wolf (Das Verlassane Magdlein), Richard Wagner (Traume) and Clara Schumann (lch stand in dunklen Traume).
To conclude the first half of the programme, Alice sang works by French composers Gabriel Faure (Apres un reve) and Kurt Weill (Youkali). Common Ground have been delighting East Anglian audiences for many years now with their hugely popular mix of adaptations of classic stories, and hilarious, slightly surreal comedies and spoofs, described in The Stage as "madcap comedy gold". This year, their autumn tour (29th Sept - 30th Oct) is The Raven, an adaptation of several stories by Edgar Allan Poe, interspersed with scenes from his life. It promises to be a suitably spooky show for that time of year when the evenings are drawing in. Andrew Clarke, (writing in the EADT) wrote: “It takes real skill to take a sturdy piece of classic literature and turn it into one of the most imaginative shows of theThenyear.” for Christmas, after the huge success of last year's Sherlock Holmes Meets Count Dracula, they return in full bonkers form with their traditional festive comedy thriller, which this year will be Hercule Poudrot Investigates…A Murder at St Muttley's! When the Hall was built nearly 40 years ago (following the magnificent fund-raising efforts of many local people) it was never envisaged for it to cater for such a vast array of events – and the sewage system is not coping too well. The system has been costing around £4,000 a year for maintenance and huge stress to the committee every time it fails, with Portaloo’s etc! The time has come when we must improve the whole system and so the decision has been reached to have the work done –BUT – its going to cost around £20,000.Fundraising is our core activity for the next months. To that end we are having a Flushing Dance on Saturday October 8th at 7:30pm to kick the effort off. The great DJ – Flying Fortress and his gang are back to swing us back to the 40’ and 50’s again with dance/sing along tunes that many of us remember. Tickets are just £10 (includes a free burger from the BBQ) the bar will be open, and everyone is invited. For tickets, please ring Wendy on 01986 872590 or 07788 892838. In the coming months a programme of events will run, all to raise the funds we need. If you would care to donate towards our work just give Wendy a ring and we will all, be tremendously grateful. The Big Breakfast returns after its summer break on Sunday 4th September from 9am onwards. The usual great cooked array of traditional goodies, tea/coffee and as much toast as you can eat all for £8 –children half price. Bingo is on the 8th and 22nd of September both starting at 7:30pm. Tote winners for July were 1st prize Gill Johnson £25, 2nd Liz Headley £15, 3rd Mary Kimber and Sophie Strong £10 and 4th Janet Huggins. All profit from the Tote goes towards running the Hall for us all to use! There is a new telephone number to book the hall on –it's 01986 874442.

The Trim Trail A trim trail of approximately 2,500 metres in length will circle the entire site with outdoor gym equipment placed at intervals along it. Two circuits will make one Parkrun or NHS Couch to 5k! Attractive planting and places to sit will make the trail the perfect place for working out, traffic-free jogging, or just walking and talking – all contributing to the Halesworth Healthy Neighbourhood plan. Public Art and Performance Art, sculpture, landscaping and performance will be integrated into the site, elevating it from sports facilities with parking to a beautiful destination that everyone can enjoy. Wysing Arts Centre in Cambridge have been contracted to facilitate the selection of a community artist who will be engaged to work with the people of Halesworth to deliver our collective vision. Local residents will be involved at all stages of planning and developing these elements. We hope to secure funding from the Arts Council for the art project on Campus, and with guidance from Wysing we are confident of a successful bid.
Halesworth Campus - more than the sum of its parts plenty of scope for students to find work placements, and potential employment, with partners on the Campus site. But there will also be opportunities for training and learning new skills within both the sports facilities and the care home. Our new sports operating partner will be selected shortly, partly on the basis of their enthusiasm about working with other parts of the Campus site. Castlemeadow Care is committed to community involvement and integration, and residents of the care home and extra care apartments will find opportunities for exercise, wellbeing and education on their doorstep. Halesworth Volunteers will work with us to explore all opportunities for volunteering, for instance around wellbeing services, mentoring of young people, and visiting the elderly. More than just a place for fitness and sport, the Campus will have something for everyone with plenty of opportunities for working, and playing, together. We look forward to involving the community as our plans progress. If you would like to take part, please contact us at info@ halesworthcampus.org.
Readers will be aware that Halesworth Campus has obtained planning permission for its two pitches – 3G allweather and grass rugby. We are currently preparing further applications for a sports centre, to include changing rooms, gym, indoor sports hall and swimming pool. But did you know that the site as a whole will bring a number of other benefits to the community?
Teresa thanked everyone for all their hard work over the last year, paying tribute to retiring committee members Bill Ellis and Sallyanne Cockrell. Particular thanks were expressed to Dave Rich who is retiring from the post of Secretary and Jackie Rich who is retiring from the position of Chair of the Friends of HDCF. 100+ Club. This is being set up by Anna Mickleburgh and Jackie Richardson to raise funds for the HDCF. The appropriate licence has been obtained and the first draw will take place in October. Numbers will be £5 each monthly, and over 40% of monthly money will go in prizes. Anyone wishing to join is welcome to contact Anna on 01986 872207 or 07721 842802. iChameleon Shop HDCF will be taking over the shop from 22nd to 28th September. We would appreciate any donations but regret that we cannot take clothes or electrical goods. Please contact Teresa or Jim on 01986 875461 for further details. September Film Matinee For our next film matinee at The Cut on September 21st we are planning to show “Downton Abbey: A New Era”. This much anticipated cinematic return of Downton Abbey follows the Crawleys and their staff as they welcome a movie crew and their glamorous stars to Downton for the filming of a new silent movie, while other members of the family go on a grand tour to a villa in the south of France to uncover a mystery about the Dowager Countess and her past. With a screenplay by Julian Fellowes and starring the original cast alongside exciting new additions, Downton Abbey: A New Era is packed full of exuberant moments, excitement and humour, tears of joy and sadness and new beginnings for all your favourite characters. Fundraising We are very grateful to all those who work so hard to raise money for us. Recent donations include £64 raised by the Sibton White Horse at their recent quiz night; £241 raised at a W.I. curling event, and £443 raised by Janet Heath of Linstead at a recent Chari-TEA garden party. The election of officers took place, with Teresa Fyfe continuing as Chair, Nikki Sawkins as Vice Chair, Iris Smith as Treasurer, and new member and trustee Alison Cackett was elected as Secretary. The rest of the committee were re-elected en bloc, and there were no further nominations. Paddy Cox was re-elected as Patron and Carer representative. The Chair presented her Annual Report and Iris Smith presented the draft accounts for the year. Both were accepted.
A.G.M. The HDCF held its A.G.M. on July 11th at The Stables, Angel Hotel. 27 people attended, including the full committee, plus representatives from the Town Council, Pear Tree Centre, First Choice, Halesworth Volunteer Centre, and Friends of H.D.C.F.
Our Summer Lunch for members, wives, partners and friends was held at Halesworth Golf Club on a very warm 18th July. Our Toastmaster for the occasion was Paddy Cox who Halesworth and District Probus Club rundown welcomed all. After Grace, said by President Martyn Wilkinson, an excellent three-course luncheon wasChairmanserved. John Wood welcomed the ladies, and following a toast Mrs Jackie Rich responded for the ladies, all of whom had a gift to take home. John then thanked the staff of the Golf Club who worked so hard to make it the very special occasion, which it certainly was. Instead of our regular meeting in August it has become the custom to have afternoon tea. Formerly in members’ gardens, it has recently been held in a local restaurant. This year we shall be going to The Ancient House in Halesworth Thoroughfare on 15th August. The proprietors have promised us a great welcome – can’t wait. David Prime

Wellbeing Sports and recreation facilities are increasingly seen as beneficial to people's health and wellbeing – whether that be through specific exercise regimes for rehabilitation, through general fitness work or through volunteering opportunities. There is great potential for a wellbeing service on Campus with varied facilities all in close proximity. GPs and healthcare professionals will be able to work with fitness and leisure trainers to prescribe exercise as therapy and a path to wellness. Volunteers will find rewarding opportunities in the sports facilities and also at Castlemeadow Care in the care home and apartments. Youth Services Campus trustees are working with a range of town organisations including the Apollo as part of a new group called Youth Action Halesworth-Rural. YAH-R is working together to plan youth services for the future when the Apollo building will need to come down to make space for the sports centre. A survey of young people is in progress to ask them what facilities they would like to see in the town and the resulting report, due in September, will help the group plan ahead. There will be space on the Campus site for a new building if money can be found to build it. YAH-R will lead on the fundraising. Partner Synergy All owners and users of the Campus site are committed to working together in partnership, with health, social care, education, training, sports and leisure offering numerous opportunities in the community. Suffolk New College On the Coast has been operating from the Skills Centre since 2020 offering vocational courses for school leavers and there should be
Let’s take a look at … The Community Café Designed into the sports building, the cafe will be a meeting place for the wider community as well as catering for users of the gym and pitches. In addition to indoor seating, we are planning outside eating areas which will overlook a children’s play area and a performance space. There is also the potential for a community garden. A brief is being drawn up to attract a local enterprise to run the café and the activities integral to it. Halesworth Campus will be looking for future managers of the café during construction so that they are in place when the sports centre opens.

On Tuesday 20th September at The Cut, Halesworth our guest speaker will be local historian and u3a member David Wollweber. David will present a talk based around his new book "Buried Treasure in the Blyth Valley". Buried treasure is the stuff of fiction. From Robert Louis Stephenson’s novel of Treasure Island to the Raiders of the Lost Ark films, treasure hunting has fascinated people down the ages. We are lucky in this part of Suffolk to have our own real buried treasure, and in this case the "truth" is often stranger than fiction. Why were the Bronze Age axes buried, why are they different sizes? What tales does the symbolism of the Roman coins tell, and what are the strange but beautiful images on the Iron Age coins all about? David brings together his own research and recent archaeological studies to examine the four hoards that are now on display at the Halesworth and District Museum, namely the Wissett Bronze Age axes, The Bramfield Bronze Age axes, the Iron Age coins from Blythburgh and the Roman coins from Cookley.Thetalk will be preceded by the u3a ThereAGM.isno charge for u3a members to our talks at The Cut; friends and visitors will be very welcome for a small entrance fee of £4 payable at the door. We look forward to welcoming you there. Buried treasure of the Blyth Valley Blythburgh Iron Age Coins - Halesworth Museum

This year, more than ever, HEM (Halesworth Events Management) would like help and support from the Halesworth community with this year’s Christmas Lights. As you are well aware for the last two years, we have not been able to put on a “Switch-on” event for the Christmas lights but have, with donations from Halesworth Town Council (HTC) and others, been able to put up the lights in 2020 and in 2021 also managed a low-key switch on day. Doing this has severely depleted our funds while fundraising has been virtually non-existent for during this time. This year, with generous help from HTC, we have already purchased new lights for the Thoroughfare and are able to start planning a switch-on event on Saturday 19th November. The scale of this event will depend on how successful further fundraising is, to kick it off there will be a jumble sale in the Day Centre on Saturday 3rd September at 10am. From Thursday 8th to Wednesday 14th September, we will be in the pop-up shop in the Thoroughfare – please bring along any donations of good quality bric-a-brac, clothes, books etc to the shop during that week and hopefully pick up a bargain. Items can also be dropped off beforehand at Durrants in the Thoroughfare or at Lovewell Blake in Quay Street. Hopefully there will be a quiz in early Autumn – keep an eye on our Facebook page for details. At our recent AGM we welcomed several new committee members which is extremely good news. If you would like to join us look out for dates of future meetings on our Facebook page - it would be good to have even more support along with ideas and thoughts on what you would like to see at the event as well as some new fundraising ideas. Additionally, we are still looking for a way for Father Christmas to travel safely up the Thoroughfare, any suggestions welcome – perhaps you have a cart or small carriage which could be pulled by elves or an open top car that he could travel in and be seen by the many children who enjoy seeing him every year.
We are here to serve the whole of Halesworth, young or old. Please support the Hoppa bus to help us keep the wheels turning. If you have never been on the Hoppa and just need a lift back home with your shopping, you can hop on anywhere. All you need to do is wave down the driver and they will stop. We can stop the bus anywhere along our route and take you home. It might seem a bit daunting the first time, or you might feel the bus is only for older people but that isn’t the case. The Hoppa is a relaxing, convenient way to get around town. If you have a bus pass it is free, if not it is a fixed cost of £1.50 per trip and children travel for 50p, pets are welcome too. Look out for our new signs about the town with all the Hoppa times on. These can be found at the Co-op, bottom and top ends of Dukes Drive, the Middle Car Park on the outside wall of the White Hart, the Peartree Centre, Angel Corner and Holton Bus Stop. We are pleased to welcome on board two new drivers to the Hoppa team Phillip Gill and Alan Forster.New drivers are always welcome, and this is especially true as the summer, so far, has been a busy time with community hires forFinally,HACT.we are fast approaching our 40th birthday as a Community Transport Organisation and will be launching a ‘Friends of the Hoppa’ club to try to raise some funds to keep us going. Watch this space for more news.

Leisure centres in East Suffolk are set to offer free membership to children in care and care experienced young people from thisWaterlanemonth. Leisure Centre and Waveney Valley Leisure Centre, run by award-winning operator Everyone Active in partnership with East Suffolk Council, are taking part in the new initiative to reduce the barriers between children and young people participating in sport and physical activity. The free membership will give them access to a range of facilities depending on their age, including gym, swim, soft play, and group exercise. According to latest figures from the Department for Education for children looked after (CLA) in England, the number of children in care is at an all-time high, at more than 80,000 children or 67 in every 10,000.This year, Everyone Active launched its national Community Health and Wellbeing Strategy, with the aim to meet the needs of individual communities through programmes that support people to be physically active, and to feel happy and healthy. As part of the strategy, this membership will support children in care or care experienced young children with free access to leisure facilities that can help improve their physical health and mental wellbeing. The complimentary membership for cared for children and care experienced young people can be accessed and set up through a referral system from local council family support teams.

As well as being economically viable, Solar PV systems are environmentally sustainable and have low running and maintenance costs.
With the recent large increases in fuel costs more people are turning to Solar energy as a means of reducing their electricity costs. With this in mind, Three Counties Fireplaces have teamed up with FirstSolarPV to offer a comprehensive supply and installation service for solar panel arrays for both homes and businesses. As all installations will vary a detailed quotation is provided for each job to advise the initia cost of installation and the estimated annual savings on the cost of electricity. The answer is, sadly, that many of them go into the sea as one of Transition Woodbridge’s members found one day in July. We were sailing in the area just off the entrance to the River Orwell, near Harwich and enjoying the warm, sunny weather when we spotted a balloon in the water. We don’t like litter anywhere but litter in the sea is a particularly serious problem so we set about picking it up with the litter picker we carry onboard. It was a Happy 80th Birthday balloon. But that was only the first. The next one was a big blue number three, probably for a little boy’s 3rd birthday. So, we pulled that out too. Over the next two hours we picked up four more balloons, some with long trailing plastic string attached. There were at least three more that we saw but they were carried away by the strong tide before we could get to them. For most of us balloons add a bit of fun to a party or celebration. But what happens to the balloon after the party? When a heliumfilled balloon is released to float up and away it may look lovely but you have no control over where it goes. Eventually it will fall to earth and could land anywhere. Wherever they end up balloons are a problem, nowadays they are made of plastic and will last for years and when they do degrade, they break up into tiny pieces that are impossible to remove from the environment. If a balloon lands in farmland it can be a danger to livestock. Cattle have choked on balloons. A balloon (or a plastic bag) that lands in the sea can be mistaken for food by turtles, dolphins, seals, whales and porpoises. Many thousands of sea mammals die each year from eating plastic including balloons. The animals can slowly starve to death as the digestive tract is blocked by the rubbish from which it gains no nourishment.Theincredibly strong plastic string can cause death or injury too as the creatures easily get tangled up in it. We’re sure none of the people who bought these balloons intended any harm and the 80-year-old and the 3-year-old who were given them would be very upset to think their balloon might have hurt any creature. If you receive a balloon, please make sure that after the party the balloon ends up in the right place – the bin - so that it can be disposed off safely and cause no harm. And instead of buying a balloon as a gift why not consider giving something that will help rather than possibly harm the environment – a packet of flower seeds or a plant that bees and other pollinators would enjoy, a bird feeder or a bird bath, an attractive re-usable shopping bag, a subscription for a local wildlife group... be imaginative! If you are concerned about litter in the sea you might like to join the River Clean in Woodbridge on Saturday, 10th September from 10:30am to 12:30pm, when the Woodbridge Sea Scouts will be picking up litter in the River Deben and along its banks near town. If you have a small boat or canoe and would like to help, please join in - at your own risk. Life jackets must be worn. At the same time Transition Woodbridge will have litter pickers available for anyone who would like to collect litter along the riverside paths and nearby car parks, streets and parks. Please meet us in Whisstocks Place at 10:30am. At various cafes in Woodbridge and at McColls in Melton you can find Five Minute Litter Pick kits set up by Transition Woodbridge with funding from The Suffolk Coast and Heaths AONB. If you see litter in the area and you have a little time to spare, please use the litter pickers to move the rubbish into a nearby bin. And remember, Jason Alexander continues to lead his Rubbish Walks around Woodbridge, starting at 10am at the Tea Hut on the last Sunday of every month. Litter picking helps our environment – both land and sea – and is surprisingly good fun!
Woodbridge Cruising Club
Ten club members enjoyed the cruise to Lowestoft and Southwold, the weather was sunny, with fresh south easterly winds, making a pleasant sail. Thanks go to Steven Lines, our commodore for organising this cruise, and Andy our cruise captain. SADs (safe arrival drinks) were held on the first night in Lowestoft, with a welcome meal at The Royal Norfolk and Suffolk Yacht Club. Boats then departed for Southwold, making a fast passage, and on the return trip boats overtook GB Row Endurance, with six rowers on their way to Tower Bridge from Lowestoft.Cruising in company, and the social activities are surely some of the best reasons for joining Woodbridge Cruising Club, this is especially true for voyages to the continent, or to newMembersdestinations.arelooking forward to future cruises, with voyages abroad to Belgium and France, and the Blackwater a perennial favourite, followed by the Three Rivers and end of cruising supper at RHYC, on the River Orwell. Weekends at the club bar, sitting outside with wonderful views of the river are always popular, as are the Wednesday Barbecues, and the popular August Bank Holiday barbecue. Why not join the cruising club. The club website woodbridgecruisingclub.org.www.hasfulldetailsandnewmembersarewelcome,whetheryouownamotorboatoryacht,orarekeentostart,orresumesailing.
Coffee Mornings – The last one on July 16th raised the welcome sum of £76 for church funds. The next will be on August 20th and September 17th. See you there. Coffee Stop - on Tuesday mornings from 10:15am to 11:30am is still growing. Coffee is free. Company is good. Do come and visit. Christian Aid - On Saturday July 23rd at 7pm in the church there was held ‘A Summer Sing-along’ musical event. It was very well attended, and we enjoyed singing our favourite songs from the shows or hymns. £5 per head was charged to include tea and cake and we managed to raise £200 for Christian Aid. Many thanks to all who came. The CA Committee also invited us to come and enjoy one of their famous cream teas in the front

Richard Smith said: “I am pleased that we have been able to extend the pilot of Katch. This is an innovative service which provides on-demand transport links for a rural area in an environmentally friendly way. “Extending the length of the pilot scheme will allow us to gain a more representative picture of demand, including summer visitors, something we could not do in the immediate aftermath of lockdown and as we endeavour to get back to normal."
The music acts join the park’s bumper line-up of spoken word acts, arts activities, workshops, the festival kids’ zone and the festival’s active environmental area - plus more to be Elmhurstannounced.Park will also include a food and drinks street, featuring local, artisan producers and brewers. For the first time, a new section of the festival, The Village, will host the word area, alongside workshops, stalls and a section devoted to local acts. The legendary musician, producer, and electronic artist Martyn Ware (founder of Human League and Heaven 17, and producer of Tina Turner and Chaka Kahn), will launch his autobiography with a special Music Monday Q&A and book signing at The Riverside on Monday 5th September.Playing in the Park on Saturday 3rd September, Ibiza veteran DJ Chris Coco (one of the few UK DJs to have played every super club in Ibiza), joins Hacienda icon Justin Robertson, who famously converted the Chemical Brothers to dance music. Les Spaine, original funk DJ and one time UK label boss to Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gay and Diana Ross, pairs-up with the festival’s resident DJ Ben Osborne, reliving their recent sets at Liverpool International Music Festival, where they appeared alongside headliners such as UB40 and De La Soul. Top regional acts appearing include Suffolk based soul band Jupiter Ray, jazz funk dance act Latin Heat and singer songwriter Peter Hepworth. East London funk and soul stalwart Auntie L comes fresh from her turn at Manchester’s Escape from Freight Island. Festival programmer and co-founder Ben Osborne says: “We’re massively looking forward to being back in the park for the festival’s tenth year. Everyone's still buzzing about last year in the park, where we came out of the pandemic with Jazzie B of Soul II Soul doing a Back To Life DJ set. This year we’re back to our weekend long format, with three days of events starting in the park and ending with the Martyn Ware launching ‘Electronically Yours’, his new autobiography, at The Riverside. As usual we’ve kept ticket prices for all the events low and under 15s are free in the park. We’re once again hugely grateful to Woodbridge Town Council and the people of Woodbridge for their support. This summer has been amazing and its great DJing back in Europe and playing places like Glastonbury and Liverpool International Music Festival again. But all the acts are really looking forward to being in Woodbridge for this weekend.” Dates, times, and venues at a glance: Saturday 3rd September 1pm-7pm, Elmhurst Park, Woodbridge, Saturday 3rd September 7pm-11:30pm, Woodbridge Community Hall, Sunday 4th September, The Boathouse, Whisstocks Square, Monday 5th September, 7:45pm Martyn Ware at The Riverside Cinema - tickets for all shows are available for £10 or under - with early bird tickets for the park going on sale soon.
