From the Chair

As I write this some Groups have held their AGMs, while others are preparing for them later this month. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the members who have worked on their Group Committees and those who have stepped forward to host rallies for the enjoyment of other members.

As I have said many times without these willing volunteers our Groups could not function, so please do what you are able.

I know it is early but some Groups are also planning their Christmas parties and rallies, where has the year gone? Whatever you have planned whether travelling abroad or staying in the UK I hope you still enjoy your motor caravan. Safe travelling.

Are you driving illegally?

When did you last check your motorhome weight? Ministry figures suggest up to 80% of motorhomes may be operating overloaded!

Drive an overloaded motorhome and you not only risk a fine, you also risk your insurance and the safety of you and your passengers!

When looking to buy your next motorhome, insist on an accurate, up -to-date weight ticket! The brochure may state a MIRO or payload allowance, but these f igures can be out by as much as 5% (average 125kg).

This is more likely to be against you than in your favour, so it is always recommended that you visit a weighbridge to check your vehicle’s weight.

Need to uprate to carry more payload?

If you think you might have a payload issue, we can help. SvTech is able to increase/uprate the payload allowance on many makes and models.

Behind the scenes of every SvTech uprate, testing of a vehicle is carried out to create a ministry recognised test report, which is then use to cover subsequent uprates. This report and testing is vital in supporting an uprate, and is a legal requirement. Do not be fooled into thinking it’s just a paperwork exercise, as offered by others.

Reaching 70? Need to consider downrating?

SvTech can downrate your motorhome to 3500kg should you not pass, or wish to take, your medical. You must first weigh the motorhome to find out what payload you will have available at 3500kg . For further guidance on downrating please visit our website at www.svtech.co.uk/motor-home-downrates

To promote road safety, SvTech designed a free -to-use, Load Distribution Analysis (LDA) program which helps the user to know their likely laden weight and how best to position their goods about the vehicle to avoid an axle overload . Please visit our website www.svtech.co.uk/lda to find out how you can stay safely within your vehicle limits.

For any questions regarding these matters, please contact 01772 621800 or email, webenquiries@svtech.co.uk

MEMBERS CASUAL CAMPSITES: A CELEBRATION

The first week in September saw the start of the final Members’ Casual Campsite of 2023 at West Midlands Showground, Shrewsbury. Lasting for two weeks and attended by almost 100 members overall the event was everything we have

come to know and enjoy about them. About a decade ago Ann Bond started organising our Casual Campsites and they are now very popular with our members, so much so that, to show our appreciation a celebration was planned.

How her team managed to make sure Ann didn’t find out anything about it will remain one of life’s great secrets! A card was signed, a collection made and gifts given to thank her for her work. This was presented on the final Saturday evening much to her surprise and pleasure. During the time she has run our Casual Campsites, they have been held as far apart as Cornwall and Scotland in the UK and in Europe as far spread as Portugal, Croatia and Germany to name but a few venues. Thank you Ann.

These popular events will continue and the planning for the next two years is already underway. Watch the magazine and handbook for details.

information I will let you all know. Please keep this date in your diaries.

CALIFORNIA DREAMIN’ FIRST LOOK DREAMIN’

Anew VW California Concept was unveiled at this year’s Dϋsseldorf Caravan Salon.

It’s not only described as a concept vehicle… but a near-production one! Make of that what you will, but we’re sure it’s got ‘mega appeal’ in its DNA.

Surprise number one is that it isn’t based on the commentator's current fave…the ID Buzz platform, or a larger derivative of it. It sticks with the Transporter Multivan (Scheduled for T7) but for the latest Cali, the long wheelbase version is utilised for the first time. And there’s more…twin sliding doors and a repositioned kitchen allow access and egress via ‘our’ nearside sliding door for the first time… which is a major safety plus for UK family use as an ‘only’ vehicle…say on the school run.

Motive power is courtesy of VW’s new MQB eHybrid drive which offers zero exhaust emission urban use and a huge worry-free touring range. It’s very well specified and includes an electronic parking brake and a plethora of driver-assist and safety systems. Inside, the most

significant change is replacing the bench-style rear seat with two ergonomically-correct individually adjustable automotive-style single seats. As with the previous bench, they convert easily into a doublebed, but use a different method of conversion. They can be adjusted

12 MOTOR CARAVANNER October 2023 INDUSTRY NEWS

3. No perching on an unforgiving rear bench, these are top tackle automotive-style pews.

4. Shorter kitchen and an additional sliding door on ‘our’ nearside is a win-win for UK purchasers and their travelling companions.

MARQUIS MOVES ON

a Deputy Managing Director has been appointed

It’s a new role for Alan Buckwell (below), a familiar face to many members who have been Marquis customers over the last 21 years. Alan was appointed Business Manager back in 2002 and quickly progressed to Branch Manager, Regional Director, and more recently to Sales and Marketing Director.

Mike Crouch (Marquis MD) commented, “Alan is already a well-known and highly respected professional in our industry. His affable character is coupled with in-depth knowledge and understanding of the Marquis process that made him the outstanding candidate to meet the future line of succession plans for the business. I look forward to guiding Alan through the transitional period as he takes over the helm.”

Marquis has the UK’s largest motorhome dealer network and Motor Caravanner magazine wishes Alan good-luck in his important role within it. GJB

fore and aft, or removed altogether if some serious load lugging is required. All fixtures and fittings have been upgraded with the emphasis on connectivity, utility, and style. A neat trick to combine all three so successfully. If it does make it to production,

the new Cali is going to be a runaway success. However, as with all California models, it certainly won’t be cheap, although will be good value for money and is likely to have strong residual values. After all, it’s a Volkswagen Volkswagen!

of luxury, style and comfort, both models boast the latest in engine design and performance from Mercedes-Benz for effortless torque and driving pleasure.

Auto-Trail will be showcasing its campervan panel van conversions with berth and belt ranges from two to four. The Expedition range measures just under 6 metres in length and is designed for navigating busy cities or winding country roads; the V-line SE and V-Line Sport offer high-spec comfort and design features and the Adventure range offers a pop-top as standard, four travelling seats and sleeps four – ideal for family adventures. The company will also be showing a range of motorhomes, from entry level to the luxurious Grande Frontier A-Class.

Bailey of Bristol already have a motorhome range in their stable. Now they plan to introduce their all new campervan at this year’s show. The Endeavour is based on a Ford This is Bailey’s first van conversion and is the next important step in the expansion of its existing motorhome portfolio. Bailey will also be celebrating its 75th anniversary.

Brownhills Motorhomes will be displaying a selection of motorhome models from its well-known manufacturer partners as well as the exclusive Elddis Evolution range. There are 13 models within the Evolution range for the 2023 season, including four campervans, with layouts to suit all requirements. All models in this range include winter packs with tank heaters, waste pipe insulation and fridge vent covers, a colour coded bumper, 4kW space saving Whale heating and much more.

Bürstner will be launching its new Playa Campervan built on a Renault Traffic base. Thanks to its compact dimensions, it’s easy to handle in urban traffic. In the interior, it reflects Bürstner's typical "wohnfühlen" home away from home style by cleverly combining its compactness with maximum living

space utilisation. Ergonomic seating solutions, pop up roof and adjustable options, useful functional features as well as Bürstner-specific accessories. The Playa is equipped with a rail track system that makes it possible to convert the rear vehicle area in an extremely flexible way. The bench is easy to put in and take out to create maximum load space. Other highlights are the water tank, which is generously sized for this vehicle category and holds 50l, and various driver assistance systems.

Carthago has added the new c-tourer T/I 145 RB LE to its model line-up. While it has all characteristics of a liner, it is still compact and incredibly multifaceted, creating a premium category motorhome. Available as a Low-profile or A-Class motorhome, the new model comes in numerous variants.

Dethleffs will celebrate the launch of its most compact motorhome at the show. Larger than a campervan but more compact and manoeuvrable than a large motorhome, the Globebus Go comes in two ranges. The T15 includes a transverse double bed in the rear and is the shortest motorhome in the stable. The longer T45 gets rear single beds, with an overall length of just 669cm. At 2.2m wide, both models are barely wider than a campervan and yet offer all the comfort, equipment and winter performance of a motorhome.

CL site: Tranby in Cumbria

We tour the countryside to meet owners and operators of Certified Listings (CLs) licensed by the Club. This month we get to know Ken and Alison Simpson from Cumbria

Address: Tranby, Great Broughton, Cockermouth CA13 0XB

Campervan: Autocruise Pace

Favourite campsite: Hoddom Castle near Lockerbie in Scotland

Last place visited in van?: West Coast Scotland

Favourite local restaurant?: Belle View in Papcastle

Favourite local pub?: Punch Bowl our local community pub

How long have you operated a CL? Just over 2 years now. We opened in July 2021 in the middle of the Covid pandemic.

What prompted you to open a CL?

We have often thought about it. We have been van owners for the last 40 or so years and we think we know what makes a good site. That – coupled with the fact that we wanted to put something back into the community that has given us so much pleaseure over the years.

Why did you choose our Club to open a CL with?

They are easy to deal with, make less demands than others and have a sensible attitude when it comes to who can and cannot stay on site.

How long have you been members of the MCC?

Believe it or not we are not members. We pay fees to the Club for our license to operate under the Club banner and we get the magazine but we do wish that fee included membership*. As CL operators we know that we have been responsible for at least 8 couples joining the club at our recommendation.

What is so special about this site?

The site is small, well-kept and fully featured. But the real specialness comes from the folk who stay here. It’s because of what the visitors want that the site has become what it is. We must be doing something right because over 50% of our guests are return visitors.

What is so special about this area?

Cumbria is delightful and this part of Cumbria is a lot quieter than the Lake District yet you are so close to it you can use us as a base to visit most of the lakes. There is a lot to do in Cockermouth. It's full of history and has some great food shops. Further afield you have got the sea side towns, fabulous walking trails and some terrific cycle routes.

What is the funniest thing that has happened at theCL?

We had a newly married couple once whose wedding present had been the gift of a rental van for their honeymoon. They had no clue as to how the van worked – nor indeed had they been shown what to do with the toilet cassette. Shall we just say that by the time they arrived here, things were a mess and while trying to deal with it they got themselves and their van covered in do-do. Of course we helped them out and cleaned them up but we did laugh at their somewhat inauspicious start to their marriage.

How often are you fully booked? Not as often as we would like to be. We are still new and not as well

known as other sites in the area but given the praise we get from our visitors we are hoping that word of mouth will get us even more custom.

What’s your top tip for any site visitor?

Use us as your base to tour West Cumbria and the Lake District. Look at the map and see how central Cockermouth is. Do some research before you book. Once you see how much there is to do and see hereabouts, you will be in a better place to know how long to book for.

What are your hobbies?

Besides being avid campervan owners, we enjoy Decoupage. It is very popular in France and involves transferring coloured paper or images on to objects. We make decoupage pebbles and leave them in our facilities hut. We

If you could invite 3 guests to a dinner party, who would you chose?

Freddie Mercury, Peter Kaye and Mary Berry. With Freddie doing the music, Peter cracking the jokes and Mary in the kitchen we reckon that would be a party worth going to!

At Hallowtree Scout camp – a newish venue for some members with access to nature walks and with an invite to Essex – we had 23 vans, eight of which were Essex. The weather was very good to us.

Having the use of a hall we started the rally with Ben and Keith collecting the fees, tea and coffee was readily available for all then Paul put back ground music on while members chattered amongst themselves.

Friday was a free day; Teresa and Caz took orders for the fish and chip night then we played six games of bingo with Ben and Keith sharing the calling. Some managed to win twice with luck on their side, then more music and a singalong.

Saturday was a free day to explore while Teresa went to buy the raffle prizes, that night Paul did a great music quiz.

Sunday morning we had a visit from Derek and Carol, then coffee with the raffle , Benjy boys dip followed by bacon and egg rolls cooked up by Keith and Ben. Derek enjoyed his and even Carol had half a roll and one rasher.

Sunday night we got the Jenga game out for those that wanted to play, with Paul and Keith reaching 35 levels setting the new record. Ian and his wife Wendy had a tense game with Ian being the victor. Every member enjoyed a very relaxing rally. Scribe Keith

Forty-three vans came to Hunstanton, including Carol and Derek on their first rally since Carol’s operations, for Anglia’s Hawaiian Bank Holiday weekend. On arrival members were greeted by grass skirted ladies! Thursday evening we had tea and coffee in the hall followed by a quiz from Paul based on Hawaii and the Hawaii 50 TV series which was very good!

Friday evening the hall was transformed with a Tiki Bar offering free Pina Colada cocktails, grass skirts, flowery neckbands, lairy shirts and some men were dressed the same. Six games of bingo and later games involving hoopla over pineapples and teams of 10 holding hands and passing

a hula hoop from the first to the last person in the team but not letting go. Apparently at one point our Chairman landed up in baby doll pyjamas. Don’t ask how!

Saturday we were entertained by Roger Williams who played a great mix of old and new so something for everybody’s tastes. The balance of Friday's cocktails were finished off.

Sunday morning we drew Terry’s tricky ticket draw and a massive raffle. The stewards had been round the town and got a lot of donations towards it from local traders. Sunday evening a music quiz from Paul and music.

Monday evening bingo, music and Jenga were played. Thanks to the first time stewards of Terry, Jackie, Keith, Annette, Paul and Julie who did Anglia proud. Scribe Derek Upcoming rallies: 12-15 October at Hoveton Village Hall NR12 8DU. Starts 1pm. Bookings for this to Teresa. poole50@virginmedia.com or 07739 463321. 27-29 October is our AGM at Alderman Peel School, Wells NR23 1RB. Starts 1pm. Bookable to Carol 01473 620933 or dereksherman41@gmail.com. Don’t forget the AGM will start at 10am on Saturday 28th.

Second rally is our Christmas celebrations on 8-11 December. A festive buffet, followed by dancing to a live group, Six Machine, on Saturday 9 December at The Tavern,

Brean Leisure Park, Coast Road, Brean, Burnham-on-Sea, TA8 2RB from 7pm to 1am. Dress is smart casual and MCC members will be seated together. Booking (part one): tickets for this are on a first come first served basis and must be booked with the venue online https://bookwhen.com/blp/e/ ev-s8ub-20231209190000. You must quote MCC when booking and the cost is £29.95 per person, pay £10 deposit, then the balance by 9 November, or pay in full. If you can, it is nice to see the vans decorated and we will have the usual raffle, mulled wine and nibbles.

Third rally is New Year 29 December-1 January (site will close at 2.30pm, so no need to rush off), at Whitstone School. The theme throughout will be ‘I do like to be beside the seaside’, so thinking caps on to decorate your tables and yourselves. The town centre is nearby or join us to socialise, help with a jigsaw, tea and cakes, enjoy games etc, and free tea/coffee in a well heated room all day, every day. £18pupn (couple), £12pupn (singles). Music will be by Pete and on 30th we will have "Your very own end of the pier review”. Sing, dance, recite, act, it’s time to get rehearsing. Fancy dress on New Year’s Eve and a light supper. A text to 07881 558995 will help with catering.

Thirty-one vans from far and wide arrived at Walcot Rugby Club for the pre-balloon rally. Of note was Stan’s 93rd birthday ploughman’s supper and cake celebration. Quizzes, silly bingo and raffle were enjoyed, together with trips into Bath. Coffee morning was followed by a delicious Sunday roast for 45 of us and some had breakfasts too in the club house. All courtesy of Fiona. Pat and Pete (don’t mention his clutch), Raye, and Party Boy Stan did a grand job hosting.

The weather, as always, is in charge of events at the Bristol Balloon Fiesta but there was enough of the good sort to make it all worthwhile. Eighty-four vans gathered just across from the venue . There were several ascents and some fascinating new shapes this year. The Thursday Glow went ahead and any spare time was filled with a quiz and music round the vans. Make a note in your diary for next year for these popular rallies.

Upcoming rallies: 12-15 October at Sharpness Docks Workers Club, Sharpness, GL13 9UN. £6 pupn (No EHU). Avon Skittles Shield Competition. 27-29 October is our AGM at Whitstone School, Charlton Road, Shepton Mallet, BA4 5PF. 8-11 December is our Christmas celebration at Holiday Park Unity, Coast Rd, Burnham-on-Sea TA8 2RB. 29 December-1 January our New Year rally at Whitstone School, Charlton Road, Shepton Mallet, Somerset BA4 5PF.

CHILTERN

After the damp month of July affecting all of the meets, we managed two very successful rallies in August.

Home Farm, Stoke Bruerne: A superb gathering of 26 vans in Northants, ably hosted by Julie and Mick, on this spacious site beside the Grand Union Canal. The weather forecast was getting better by the hour and all looked promising for this three night rally. Friday had most gathering in the shelters for cake and a natter and later the fish and chip van was on site. The evening gathering was entertained with quizzes.

Saturday had wind! And extra straps were needed for the shelters, but that couldn't put off our stoic members who enjoyed a great ploughmans lunch organised by the hosts. A game of knock the bottles over required unusual headgear and was a great laugh. A very enjoyable meet, especially for the grandchild that attended.

Aston & Cote Village Hall: In deepest Oxfordshire, 13 vans gathered on a new site for the group, for four nights on the huge playing field that was more like a bowling green than a football pitch. The weather was forecast as changeable, so shelters were hastily erected.

Friday morning proved how well the field was looked after as not a puddle to be found. Members used the local bus service to places such as Witney and Bampton and some took a walk to Aston Pottery for tea and cakes. The local community-run shop was well stocked with fresh produce and The Red Lion pub also had many visitors. The afternoon many took part in the skittles games followed by the cream tea. The evening had our brains tested by a train/movie quiz.

Saturday members demanded a rematch on the skittles and the evening was occupied by card bingo.

Sunday morning started dry and everyone enjoyed bacon sandwiches which were just cleared away before the heavens opened. The afternoon had people playing boules. Thank you to the hosts Carole, Shirley, Roy and Pete.

Upcoming rallies: 27-29 October is our AGM at St Peter's School, SL4 2QY. Bookable, plenty of parking for day visitors.

EAST WESSEX

Hello everyone; two rally reports this month. The first at the Army Flying Museum in Middle Wallop at the end of July did not exactly get off to a flying start as illness sadly meant the planned hosts were not able to come and we had to find a new host at short notice. Thankfully Larry and Sheila were able to step into the breach and saved the day; many thanks to them both. Ten vans including visitors from West Wessex and Sussex came along. Some visited the museum, others went into Andover or sampled the onsite café. Other activities include a quiz, cream tea, card bingo and Val’s raffle, with music from Alan and Mary.

Hayling College on Hayling Island was the venue for our August Bank Holiday rally, hosted by Mick and Myra, with Dave. A total of 25 vans came along, including five visitors from Sussex, three from West Wessex, two from Chiltern and one each from S&W Wales and Severn Valley.

Once again host Mick treated us to his lovely homemade cakes which were soon polished off. Members mostly did their own things, meeting up with family at the seafront, visiting Havant, cycling, a tabletop sale, as well as charity shops, local cafes and restaurants. Being a bank holiday there was lots of activity along the beach which was teeming with visitors.

The weather was a bit variable, some wind and rain, but a fair amount of sunshine too, so it meant we were able to use the pods to meet up. Alan and Mary entertained us with singing, getting us all to join in, and another night Mary did a pub quiz. Two people proved they knew more than just a thing or two, but for the rest of us, the less said, the better.

Cream teas, card bingo, and a raffle were also squeezed in and rounded off a very enjoyable rally. Thanks to the hosts for volunteering to stand in.

Hope to see as many as possible at the AGM on the 22nd. You can come to the meeting even if not staying for the weekend. We now need a host for Fort Widley in November. Please let Allen or any of the committee know if you would be able to do it.

Upcoming rallies: Booking required only where stated. 28 September-2 October at St Cross Cricket Ground, St Cross, Winchester SO23 9RX. 4 night field rally with hall. £14 pupn all units. Arrivals from 1pm. 20-22 October at Weeke Primary School, Stoney Lane, Weeke, Winchester SO22 6DR. Bookable. Food and professional entertainment with 60s and 70s theme, so feel free to dress up in that style (optional). Buses to Winchester nearby. Hardstanding with use of hall. AGM 10.30am on Sunday. Fixed price £32, (£28 singles). Arrivals from 5pm. Bookings to Allen: phone 07411 955133. 3-5 November at Fort Widley, Portsdown

Hill, Portsmouth PO6 3LS. Halloween/bonfire night. Field rally with use of heated hall. £15 pupn, £14 pupn singles. Arrivals from 1pm. See our website: eastwessex.uk or our facebook page @eastwessexMCC for any updates.

ESSEX

A new venue for Essex called Lake on 9 acres, a beautiful location and the weather was great, so sitting out in the field was a good tonic for us all. Our hosts were Dave, Gill, Peter, Tina, John, and Chris.

Friday afternoon was a relaxing meet and greet, every camper being given a drawing to do of an Essex location and place in their windows for other people to identify, this was won by John. This was followed by a few games of bingo, and the sale of raffle tickets, our DJ Nigel played music for us all until 11.30, we had been joined by visitors from York, Kent, Chiltern, Norfolk and new Essex members Andrew and Nicci. Our Chiltern friends Alan and Ros won a bottle of vodka on a music quiz.

On Saturday a lot of people wandered to near-by shops, and buses into Rayleigh. We started quite late in the afternoon BBQing outside and decorating the vans with lights and bunting. We made a great Carribean festive themed area and so many people dressed up, we had six Bob Marleys and lots of lovely dresses on the ladies, we then played some games with a lot of banter that made it so much fun. The Pimms and rum punch flowed all evening. We had a big anniversary and birthday to celebrate, so the people supplied us all with wine and beer, "thank you".

The raffle was drawn and we had some great prizes including a donation of rhubarb and croquetts, we also had a visit from an exotic bird, great fun! We danced the evening away to great music, thanks to the DJ; Sunday was a big clear up and a chat from Dave and Bob over a cuppa, then sadly home. Woodies dad

Weeley – All around various groups were having to cancel rallies due to the poor weather, but, we managed to still continue with ours; a small compact turn out with visiting groups. We had a brand new Chiltern member, Philip, who had never rallied before. Welcome, we hope you rally again somewhere. Some members managed to venture into Claton in amongst the showers, others went to the onsite cafe for breakfast or brunch, the shop did well as we get discount. Bob T

At our next rally we had a good turn out with Essex friends as well as others from three different groups. We turned up Friday and it was dry and the sun was out. We sat out and had a catch up with friends. Friday evening the rain started at ten but it didn't stop us having a lovely evening as there were a few quest tents up.

The next morning the sun was out, and we had a stroll around the antique shops. Some people had lunch at Barge Pub which is just a stone's throw from the rally field. The food there was very nice and a beer to wash it down. Saturday evening the weather was better and lots of us sat outside till late.

well attended. The site was a very relaxed venue with good facilities. Heather and Steve were the hosts and quizzes were the order of the weekend with members drawing on their artistic flair for the picture quiz. We had the pleasure of a large group on the site with all the children home schooled and the best behaved group of children we have come across. It was a pleasure to watch them embrace camping.

KENT

11th to 13th August – Bow Bridge Marina, Wateringbury was restricted to 10 motorhomes and it is great to report that Mark and Lorraine joined us for their first rally –welcome to you both! Everyone got together both evenings and enjoyed a sausage sizzle and Boules competition on Saturday, congratulations go to Tracey and Robert Lincoln for their victory over Jill and Lee in the finals.

Our August Bank Holiday rally found us at the Rye Rugby Club where we had 36 motorhomes from various counties. Members were able to enjoy the picturesque town of Rye, experience its Jazz festival and the lovely walks/cycle rides to the harbour and beach at Camber.

The weather was inclement on Thursday but a few hardy souls put up the marquee in the rain which allowed those who wanted to, to come over and catch up over a few drinks. Friday night we played bingo and our thanks go to Sharon and Steve for tenaciously calling the numbers in the semidarkness – we must get bigger balls!

ISLE OF WIGHT

The rally season is in full swing with at last an improvement in the weather. Here is hoping we have good weather for the autumn rallies.

Calbourne Heights was enjoyed by the group with the opportunity to visit the mill and the café with the peacocks for company. Martin and Teresa were excellent hosts and kept us entertained. It was very windy and there were some heavy showers but the group were not slowed down at all.

Whippance Farm rally was also very windy but a great location adjacent to the beach. Pat and Edwin were great hosts and entertained us with some games in the afternoon and evening. Pam baked a delicious cake and we also had a cream tea. There were no takers for swimming this year but the dogs enjoyed their runs on the beach. Edwin as usual was our resident BBQ chef.

Comforts Farm was a new venue for us and did not disappoint. The weather was glorious and the rally was

Out Table Top sale on Saturday morning was very popular and some members were able to pass on some useful items. Our congratulations go to Tony Viall for selling out of his wares, although Mike Kay showed what an ingenious salesman he was as he tried so hard to offload some wonderful Royal Doulton plates and other gentlemen’s gifts! A wonderful sausage sizzle was enjoyed on Saturday evening followed by some members visiting the Rugby Club to enjoy the country and western band that was playing.

Sunday afternoon was all about the boules and kubbspel championships with Dave and Jean winning the boules and Jill and Lee the kubbspel. Janice and Fil hosted a wonderful general knowledge quiz on Sunday evening with the winners being a team named Mixed Bunch with members from Kent and S&W Wales. All in all, it was a great weekend and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves!

Wales in August. We were welcomed onto the Rugby Club pitch next to Bala Lake by our hosts John, Pat, Richard and Caroline. As the day was dry, eight bikes went on our first ride out to Lake Vyrnwy. We stopped at the Visitor Centre for refreshments and photos of the bridge and dam, but were unable to return on the opposite side of the lake as a tree had fallen into the road. The scenery around us was very impressive. Great tall trees, steep valleys and narrow lanes overlooking steep inclines. It was quite scary passing some vehicles. But for these stunning views it was worth it!

It was a nice change to have use of the club house in the evenings as generally we sit together outside. We were

entertained with quizzes and games and Caroline had made a gorgeous cherry gin which she shared with everyone.

On Monday we had a long ride out to Llandudno. Again travelling across green hills and open countryside. Rain eventually came upon us, but we were well prepared this time and stayed dry. As we rode down into Llandudno the sun came out and made for a very pleasant afternoon on the Promenade. Then John/Pat led us through the town and up the Great Orme for some windy sightseeing.

On Tuesday we had a coffee morning with a tabletop sale and some fairground games outside including a coconut shy and rifle shooting.

The rain forecasted changed our next group ride out to Thursday, to Beddgelert, Llanberis and Conwy Falls. Nineteen bikes left site along some lovely roads and wonderful views. After lunch in Beddgelert we headed up to Snowdon. The roads were becoming steeper and more sweeping with views of mountains either side of us. This was an epic ride. After stopping at a viewpoint (see photo), we headed down to Llanberis, down Pen-y-Pass and back again. We stopped at Conwy Falls Cafe for refreshments before heading back to load our bikes for the next rally at the Llangollen Pavilion by kind invite from NWM&NW.

Our first rideout took us to the Ponderosa Cafe for more great views and sweeping roads. Then a couple of days later to the Old Stores Motorbike Cafe in Mold. Our route took us up to the top of the Horseshoe Pass with lovely views of the valley below. The rain became quite heavy but thankfully we reached the Old Stores in time for lunch. This is a motorbike cafe with plenty of interesting motorcycle memorabilia around the place. Our last ride out was to the Famous Llangollen Aqueduct nearby for lunch at the Chapel Tearooms. Some of us braved the walk over the aqueduct! Then it was back on the bikes to Chirk Castle and more refreshments! We returned to Llangollen Pavilion via a lovely (tree lined tunnel) country lane to load our bikes and pack our vans to leave.

Upcoming rallies: 1-8 October at Valley Farm Campsite, Farmoor, OX2 9NL.

NENE VALLEY

The rally at Whites Farm Shop had an unexpected start. They have had to install an electric gate on the way to the entrance to the camping field, so suddenly our steward, Geraldine, needed extra help. Members had to be let in and out of the gate, at some distance from the field, as well as being booked in and sited. Thanks to Peter and Tony for stepping in to help. It was a good field, but unfortunately the weather prevented much sitting outside. Instead we went into the farm shop (the butchery department had the largest scotch eggs we have ever seen, and they were delicious) followed by a sit in the cafe. Some intrepid souls made the journey to Earls Barton village, but the weather, 19 hours of rain on the Saturday, put a dampener on the stay. Thanks to Geraldine for stewarding in the trying conditions. Kathleen

The weather was much better than expected at Naseby, we did not get the torrential rain that was forecast, and were able to sit outside for coffee morning on Saturday and Sunday. The memorial for the Battle of Naseby was only a short walk along the road from the Village Hall, although some of us preferred to walk to The Royal Oak for lunch on Saturday, very nice it was too, worth the effort. Martin and Janice looked after us for the weekend, and were busy looking after their small grandson as well on Saturday, as he ran about with his football. On Friday evening we were able to use the hall, and Martin produced a quiz that kept us puzzled, then he gave us an even more fiendish one on Saturday, thanks Martin for stirring up the grey cells. Thanks to Julie for rescuing the raffle by giving us some raffle tickets, as Nene Valley tickets were left on top of the freezer in Tony's garage!

We were pleased to welcome visitors, and hope you enjoyed your weekend. Finally many thanks to Martin and Janice for stewarding.

Upcoming rallies: 13-15 October is our AGM at Cogenhoe Bowls Club, York Avenue, Cogenhoe NN7 1NB. Cost £13 pupn. 10-12 November at The Gliding Centre, Husbands Bosworth Airfield, Sibbertoft Road, Husbands Bosworth, Leics., LE17 6JJ. Cost £12 pupn. We are hoping to provide hookup, for which there will be a charge, if taken (approx £10 per w/end). 1-4 December is our Christmas weekend at Barnstones, Great Bourton, OX17 1QU. Cost £14 pupn + rally fee. Electric £4 per night if required. Cost of dinner etc TBC. Limited number of vans.

NORTHERN COUNTIES

Hello again everyone. Unfortunately we had to cancel our Redcar Rugby Club rally at the eleventh hour due to the ground being waterlogged.

Our rally at Durham Rugby Club was well supported and hosted by Bill and Ellen Hanby, with visitors from Yorks, Lancs, Kent and Northern Ireland. We shared the field with the Burstner Owners Club with a ‘no-mans’ land between the groups! We were invited by the Burstner owners to

join them for a karaoke evening in the bar, which was well supported by all and a tremendous lot of fun was had.

Our next rally was at Thirsk Racecourse hosted by Stuart and Sue Collingwood, 27 vans attended with visitors from Yorks, Lancs, NWM&NW. Saturday night we had an al fresco cheese and wine party hosted by Stuart and Sue. Sunday morning coffee included sausage buns which were enjoyed by all.

Our final rally to report was an old favourite at Bents Park, South Shields. The weather was glorious and we had 62 vans in total over the five days – 40 Northern Counties with visitors from Avon, Anglia, Lancs, Yorks, S&W Wales, Scotland, Nene Valley, NWM&NW and East Mids and we welcomed quite a few new members to their first rally. We had two excellent nights of professional entertainment in the marquee, also a table top sale on the Sunday morning and then in the afternoon a games get-together with Smite, archery and a German ball game, thoroughly enjoyed by all who took part. Other entertainment over the five days were Oi Bingo, a music quiz and other quizzes, and general chit-chat.

By the time you are reading this, we will have had our AGM and will report on this and also our September rallies in the next magazine. Don’t forget to check our website for rally information and important updates: www. northerncounties.co.uk. Paula & Tony Edwards

Upcoming rallies: 13-16 October is Northumbria Vintage Tractor Rally, Brunton. 27-29 October at Prior Pursglove College, Guisborough. Halloween Rally but hosts are needed if this rally is to go ahead. 3-6 November at Blucher Social Club – this rally has limited space (max 25 vans) therefore is bookable. We hope to see you at a rally soon.

NORTHERN IRELAND

Well thank you myself, Robbie, Victor and Eleanor for being the main hosts at the Portrush rally, five days from Tuesday 8th to Sunday 13th August. Weather was reasonably kind. Other marshalls included the Chairman and his wife Thelma, Hugh and Moira Harvey, David and Christine, Adeline and William, Andy and Sam, Isaac and Pauline. Thank you all. To Adeline who took members cold water swimming most mornings. To Bridget who took a line dancing class. To Hailey and Brian who did a quick step class. To Victor for bingo. To Moira and Victor for last man standing. David and Thelma for Play Your Cards Right and Mr & Mrs. David for skittles and Andy for horseshoe throwing. To Pauline who had two of us in bed for the afternoon after pilates class. To fireman Sam for fire talk. To Iris who helped amuse a couple of children who came along to our morning kid's time and helped out at our wine and cheese evening. Still have a bar of chocolate for Hunter who gave in a kid’s quiz sheet. To those who enjoyed a cycle ride to Portstewart. To Victor again who kept toilets checked and loo rolls on hand. To those who dressed the part for our Western style night. Music was by Stuart Samuels. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the music. Feet were stamping and the line dancing classes and quick step

classes paid off. Of course, I always thank last but not least my Robbie. The guess how many sweets was won by Lillie Proctor. Trevor, Enda and Betty won the number plate draws. Three quizzes were put out and the winners were Flo, Andy and Sam. After a great week I returned home tired but very happy everything went well. See pictures in the gallery. Look forward to seeing you at Enniskillen.

NWM&NW

The rally at the Hollies was hosted by Darren and Shirley Hill and they did a fantastic job of keeping us on our toes with quizzes but, also, organising wonderful weather, though a little windy. Seventeen vans arrived and pitched up safely on the lovely field. Many took advantage of Dagfields Antiques and Craft centre just a short walk away. They returned with purchases having searchedd through loads of memorabilia whilst others favoured the pie shop and the butchers. I was reliably informed that the coffee shop was worth a visit and the steak pie in one restaurant had a large flaky pastry crust and lots of filling.

In the evening we met in the gazebos for Shirley's quizzes. Saturday, there was a " fizz and crisp" evening when we were testing our taste buds to identify different savoury snacks followed by a general knowledge quiz. Jon and Elaine cleaned up on all the quizzes and even had a line and house on the bingo. Many thanks to Darren and Shirley and to everyone who came and made this an enjoyable rally.

The Bank Holiday rally at Llangollen had a total of 97 vans with visitors from the Motorcycle Group (25), Severn Valley (11), Lancashire (8), S&W Wales (7), East Midlands (3), Ireland (2) and one each from Yorkshire, Anglia, East Wessex, Essex and Northern Counties. The Motorcycle group went out on ride outs (Mystery Tours) each day around the area. Other members enjoyed the various attractions in the town from the railway to the cafes and shops.

Friday evening was the usual bingo and Saturday was Jon's educational and interesting quiz about the area. Thank you Jon and well done to Di and Pam's table for winning. A big thank you to everyone who worked throughout this rally and to everyone who came.

There were 25 vans at the Salford Children's Holiday Camp rally with visitors from Lancashire, Severn Valley, Anglia, Northern Counties, S&W Wales and East Midlands. Thank you Pam and Linda for booking-in. The weather was glorious allowing trips out and walks on the beach. We also enjoyed a coffee morning with scones and cakes in the community room thanks to Jo and Doug.

There was a fish and chip supper on Thursday thanks to Mike and Jon for transport. During the five days we had bingo on two occasions. Linda tested our bird spotting knowledge with her quiz which was won by Rose. Saturday's quiz involved anagrams and "feely bags". The winners were Dave Hall's table and James Forrester's table. There were some interesting answers for the objects. Well done to everyone who took part.

During the rally we held a collection for the charity and

raised £60 partly by donations for showers (everyone was super clean). Doug and Jo were very grateful for the cash on behalf of the charity.

Details for booking rallies or if you think you can host or help with rallies contact the rally officers, Jon and Elaine: email nwmnwrally@hotmail.com or mobile 07525 851394.

Upcoming rallies: 6-8 October at Stone Cricket Club, Lichfield Road, Stone ST15 8QH. Farmers' Market, easy walk to town. £25 for weekend. SCOTTISH

Greetings from a sunny Scotland. Our rally at The Clink, Auchtermuchty, had 17 Scottish vans attending and was hosted by Ken and Rosemarie who own the site. On arrival members were asked to display a drawn clue to a TV program or song in their window for the next day.

Thursday night Ian and Aileen provided cheese and wine and cake to celebrate their 49th wedding anniversary. Friday Ken and Rosemarie arranged a quiz and some fun.

During the day on Saturday we had an indoor Viking Kub competition, plus how many clothes pegs could you hold in one hand. Two other parts of the competition involved throwing a toilet roll from a distance into a bucket. Also a time was given to transfer as many pieces of pasta you could one at a time and drop it into a cup. Just to make sure everyone was very busy Rosemarie had arranged a treasure hunt round the Clink. Bill Christie and Ian Clark won most points at the games. Brian and Jackie Burnett won the Viking Kub which was on a knockout basis. On Saturday night Ken Swan played keyboard while Ian, for one night only, accompanied him on the accordion.

Indoor croquet was held on Sunday, and some tried out their operational skills on a small digger outside.

Robert Napier celebrated his birthday, and Malcom and Josy Cormack celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary at the meet.

The next rally is 6-9 October at Monturpie, Upper Largo. Our AGM will be held there on Sunday 8th October at 11am in the restaurant on site. It is important that people wishing to attend book as we need numbers for catering after the AGM. Look forward to seeing everyone there. JanB

Welcome to this autumn newsletter. Hopefully you are still managing to get out and about before the clocks change at the end of this month.

Official notification that South West Peninsula's 28th Annual General Meeting will commence at 8pm on Friday 10th November 2023, at Wooda Farm Holiday Park, Poughill Bude, EX23 9HU. All attendees will be required to show their current membership card. We have hired the barn for the entire weekend up to midday Sunday for ralliers to use –please be aware there is limited heating in this barn, so wrap up warmly!

There are a couple of August rallies to report on; the first at the ever-popular Mount Edgcumbe, hosted by Linda and Graham Morris, who say:- Graham and Linda would like to thank everyone who joined us at Mount Edgcumbe from Friday 4th until Monday 7th August. We had 20 vans attending, four West Country, one East Midlands, three Severn Valley, one North Counties and 11 South West Peninsula. This included two new members. Although the elements were well and truly against us on the Saturday, this did not deter anyone from getting out and about and having a great time. Mount Edgcumbe is one of those venues that you can’t go wrong hosting. We enjoyed meeting everyone and sharing their company.

The second August rally was at Stithians Showground steam rally combined with Falmouth Tall Ships event. Unfortunately Pete and Mel were due to host until Pete had a slight mishap with a set of ladders and Chris and Mick Ellis kindly stepped in to host. Here is the report from Chris:We had 13 vans including us (hosts Chris and Mick), West Wessex, West Country and of course SWP, including the company of two lovely young people, Bea and Danny, who accompanied their respective grandparents – they enjoyed the rally. The weather could have been kinder, but it didn’t stop anyone doing what they had planned. The storm came and went without any damage to our group. Luckily we managed to hold our coffee and biscuits meeting outside

on Sunday and started to say goodbye. Thanks to all who attended. Safe travels and hope to see you all again soon.

The special Christmas Party Time raffle to be drawn at Cofton Christmas party weekend are on sale now to all paid up MCC members. If you are unable to go to this particular rally you must nominate someone who is going and who can collect your prize; any prize drawn and not collected on the day (Sunday) will be redrawn.

Upcoming rallies: 12-17 October at Woodlands Leisure Park, TQ9 7DQ. 10-13 November is our AGM at Wooda Farm, Bude, EX23 9HU. 8-11 December at Cofton Holiday Park, Dawlish, EX6 8RP. Christmas Party Time rally. 30 December-2 January at Trevarrian Holiday Park, Newquay, TR8 4AQ. New Year.

S&W WALES

Hi everyone, as I write the children are just about to go back to school so, almost certainly, the weather will improve and we will be able to enjoy the good weather – fingers crossed!

10-14 August – It was lovely to return to Brecon during the Jazz festival and what a good turn out, 60 vans in all. A big thank you to Jane, Ibrie, Yvonne and Dave Marriott, first time hosts who definitely had a baptism of fire for their first and let’s hope not the last rally. Thanks also to Barry who is always ready to lend a helping hand. Speaking of helping hands, our friend Sue Hartley turned up in a wheelchair having broken her leg, fortunately for her Derek was more than happy to push her around all weekend. Never seen him so cheerful.

I'm sorry I did not catch up with the visitors from Ireland but hope they felt welcome, they were the Clydesdales from the Republic and the Taylors from Northern Ireland and last, but by no means least, Ellen and Barry Giles from West Wessex who were also first timers. We had enquiries from a number of people about joining the club and at least two did so at the weekend.

Our resident troubadour John Davies celebrated his 70th birthday this weekend and had plenty of entertainment to choose from in the town. Although the festival is advertised as ‘The Brecon Jazz Festival’ there are many other genres of music on offer from Dixieland to folk and rock.

The only downside to the weekend was the unpredictable weather, not a surprise really as August had been awful. Most of us managed to get out in between the showers and there was plenty of entertainment under cover, but with all the preparation and planning which had taken place the organisers must have been disappointed.

We managed to have a coffee morning on Sunday which was great because we were parked around the perimeter of the cricket ground. This made it difficult to socialise especially with the frequent showers. Thanks to Muriel Butt for this report.

Sadly, our Tenby bank holiday rally had to be cancelled due to ongoing work at the school. Listed below are the excellent forthcoming rallies – several are bookable so make

SUSSEX

Petworth rally was small with only five vans but lovely with the sun out. Some of us visited the town hostelries for lunch and Petworth house. In the evenings we were musically entertained by Mary and Alan under the evening sun.

Maureen and Chas

Many thanks to all members who have supported us, let’s hope we continue to enjoy the rest of this year and forward to the next.

Our annual trip to South Harting and its horticultural festival was unfortunately marred by the weather and ground conditions. The groundsman had to cancel our rally at the last minute due to the waterlogged field, disappointing many but beyond our control.

However, the follow on rally at Petworth Junior School did take place, with reduced numbers, and hosted by Chas and Maureen. Those who went had a good time, with improving weather. It was only a short walk into the village, with its array of pubs and antique venues. Alan and Mary led an evening singalong. At the last knocking, a paddling pool was discovered near the school, Trevor and Abbie would have enjoyed spending more time at this welcome facility. Better luck next time!

Our next rally is at Willingdon Community School, Broad Rd, Eastbourne, BN20 9QX on 27-29 October, start time 6pm. The Annual General Meeting will be on Saturday, starting at 10.30am in the main hall, open to all members, rallying or day visitors. Please remember to bring your membership cards. This will be followed by a members' meeting. There will be a ploughman’s supper served at 5.30-6.00pm, bring your own plates and cutlery so we can easily clear away, ready for the evening entertainment. Let the committee know on arrival of any dietary requirements and/or allergies.

Gordon and Carole will be stepping down from the committee after many loyal years of service so please join us to thank them for all their hard work. This also means that we will need new committee members in order for our group to continue. Please consider how you can help. Every

assistance will be given to those who wish to contribute more to the general wellbeing of our group. Contact any present committee members for details or advice, either before the meeting or on arrival at the AGM. Remember, the group is run by members, for members and needs members to carry on, to ensure our future and enjoyment.

Upcoming rallies: 9-14 November at Seal (Bunn) Leisure, Selsey; 16-18 December at Thomas A Beckett Junior School, Worthing (Xmas rally); 29 December-1 January St Richards College, Bexhill on Sea. Bookings being taken by Carole Bennett or Marilyn Harris, with deposits. See website or Sussex group Facebook page for details.

WEST COUNTRY

Newton Abbott Rugby Club – Everyone mostly arrived on the Wednesday with just a few arriving before the weekend. We had a total of 24 vans attend: 13 West Country, 3 Avon, 4 SWP, 2 West Wessex, 2 S&W Wales. We started our rally with our welcome meeting; we were lucky to be able to have the sole use of the Rugby Club's Social Club. We started the evening with our hosts Sam, Tim and Kate introducing themselves to everyone and letting us know what to expect on this rally. We also enjoyed some homemade cakes baked by Sam and Kate, then we all enjoyed a fun game of bingo which was kindly called by Derek, then we chatted over a drink.

On Thursday the day was ours to do as we wished, many took a bus ride into town and also went further afield to Teignmouth or Paignton, and in the evening we could also use the social club with the members.

On Friday the day was our own to do as we wished and then in the afternoon we all enjoyed a fun game of skittles and boules; the winners won a pub lunch and while the games were being played the Guess The Items In The Bags were out for everyone to start guessing.

On Saturday morning we held our coffee morning where we enjoyed the rest of the cakes and biscuits, then the answers were read out for the Guess What Is In The Bags. It was a really fun game to play. We also held our fabulous raffle. During the day there were two events going on, the first was at the racecourse for their Country Fair which was a great day out, the second was at the rugby club for their Party On The Pitch, which was also a great day out, then in the evening at the rugby club they had some bands playing and they were great.

Before we knew it, it was time to pack down and to go back home. We hope that everyone had a great time at this rally and we all look forward to meeting up again at a next rally.

Bude Rugby Club – Where do we start! What a great rally we all had. We had 94 vans attend. The weather was great on the first day, so it was nice and dry to set up. On Friday evening we had our welcome meeting at the social club where our committee told us what to expect on our rally, then the staff at the social club cranked up the BBQ and cooked us burgers and hotdogs which we all enjoyed, then >>

October 2023 MOTOR CARAVANNER 41 GROUP NEWS

we all enjoyed a game of bingo.

On Saturday most of us went exploring for the day and in the afternoon some of us enjoyed a game of Boules. In the evening we were once again able to get a warm pasty by the staff of the social club, then we were entertained by Mike and Irene who played and also sang some shanty songs for us. Thank you Mike and Irene for taking time out to come and entertain us. Then afterwards our very own entertainer Ken got up and sang us some songs which we joined in with.

On Sunday the day was ours to do with as wished then in the evening the club opened up for us once again, we all enjoyed a game of bingo then afterwards our Ken went around giving out musical instruments so became Ken’s very own orchestra which was a great laugh.

On Monday morning we all had a nice surprise as the staff of the social club cooked us up some bacon sandwiches, these were a thank you from them for us using the club every night, but we all gave a donation of which the staff gave back to us to put in our charity box, so I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff at Bude Rugby Club you were all stars. We also held our coffee morning which also included our wonderful raffle. In the evening we were once again entertained by Ken and we also had a great game of bingo. We were also very lucky to be able to watch the firework display that was put on by the RNLI to mark the end of their weekend festivities and then Ken sang some more songs for us all to join in with to end the evening. Thank you Ken for all your hard work.

And then before we knew it, it was time to pack down and head home, until we all meet up again at a next rally.

Don’t forget it is our AGM in October and if you would like to join our great committee then contact Jan our Secretary. Also we are looking for hosts for next years rallies, so please put your name down to be a host.

Upcoming rallies: 5-9 October is our AGM at Riverside. 10-15 October at Kings Down Tails. 30 November-3 December at Riverside, this is our Christmas Dinner Rally.

WEST WESSEX

A great weekend, and lots of fun, was had at The Three Magpies, Devizes. The meet was attended by 14 vans, mostly West Wessex, and one newcomer from Yorkshire. We gathered for Meet and Greet on Thursday with everyone joining in and making new friends. Some members enjoyed a game of Boules. All gathered around our hub again on Friday evening for card bingo which was great fun and we had three successful winners. On Sunday morning we held a coffee morning with the raffle. Lots of us enjoyed a delicious Sunday roast in the pub, followed by more fun in the evening. Monday turned out to be another lovely day so a cream tea and bubbly was enjoyed. Altogether a very successful rally. Many thanks to Judy and Roy who have provided this account.

Upcoming rallies: 4-9 October at South Lytchett Manor BH16 6JB. Hosted by Chum and Sue (07706 402880) assisted by Frank and Angie. This is a full facilities site with

West Wessex MCC will hold their Annual General Meeting weekend at Devizes Football Club SN10 3DX from 26-30 October. Cost is £8.50 pupn and hosts are Ali and Dawn (07889 998080), assisted by Jacky and Graham. Booking is required. The clubhouse will be open on some evenings with a a Halloween Disco on Saturday evening (fancy dress optional). Please see website for details and directions. Don’t forget your membership cards! All meets start at 12 noon and we hope to see you soon.

YORKSHIRE

3-8 August at Whitby RUFC. Unfortunately due to the horrendous weather over the weeks before, the ground was just too saturated for us to hold the rally and it was with heavy heart that we had to cancel.

17-20 August at Derwent Arms, Osbaldwick. As a first time host David and I had the pleasure of welcoming 26 vans to this rally, so we had 25 Yorkshire (including us) one a first time rallier, one Lancashire and one Essex (first time with Yorkshire). The weather was mixed but overall not too bad, with some sunshine. This enabled ralliers to venture into York either on foot, by bike or bus to explore the shops etc. The rest just enjoyed the sunshine and socialised

with friends on the rally field. The pub had a quiz night on Thursday, it was curry night on Friday and steak night Saturday, of which I partook and really enjoyed. There was also a live band on Saturday night encouraging some ralliers to get up and boogie. We were kept company on the field by Parker the billy goat, which was quite entertaining as he escaped a few times on the first day and had to be captured (by me) and returned to his pen. This caused quite a few giggles amongst my fellow ralliers. Overall a good weekend was had.

24-28 August at Pickering Recreation Club. We had such a good time here in June we decided to book an extra rally for the bank holiday weekend. 32 vans attended and were entertained by Mike and Elaine as hosts. Quizzes to test the grey cells and bingo which was called on two nights to give folk a chance to win some spending money. The weather was pretty good with some slight rain showers so a good time was had.

Upcoming rallies: 13-15 October is our AGM at Wetherby Racecourse LS22 5EJ. 10-12 November at Rolls Royce Social Club BB18 6HJ.

&

Frances and Michael Howorth try out and test motor caravan gear and goodies.

1. MOON CHAIR

Designed as a trail-ready alternative to its horizontal cousin the hammock, the Moon Chair is an ingenious vertical hanging accessory that lets you relax in many different ways. Compact, lightweight and convenient to transport in a neat sleeve with integrated carry strap, the Moon Chair is the perfect summer accessory. Designed to offer incredible versatility for motor caravan travels, or at home, this stylish and comfortable chair can be hung anywhere there is a branch, hook or beam.

We rigorously tested the Moon Chair hanging it from a tree and can attest to its comfort, strength and durability.

Priced at £89.95 the Moon Chair can be purchased online at www.ticketothemoon.com or through selected retailers.

2. CABBUNK

Early on in our campervan journey we quickly caught on that at the drop of a hat one or both of the grandchildren who live with us in our multi-generational household would want to come camping with us. The problem is Voyager has fixed beds at the back instead of a rear lounge and that means it was – to all intents and purposes –a 2-berth van. Then we discovered Cabbunk; a way of temporarily adding two extra childbeds. Invented by a grandparent who had exactly the same problem, the patented Cabbunk is lightweight, easy to install and can be fitted in seconds! Our driver and passenger seat swivels 180 degrees and

the Cabbunk is hug over the headrests to make two child beds that are strong and easy to store away in our garage. Single Patented Cabbunk are available for both swivel and non-swivel seat campervans and motorhomes and can be purchased from Cabbunk. www.cabbunk.co.uk

3. MIRIDER BIKES

The MiRider is a versatile bicycle built in the UK that not only folds away neatly but was designed specifically to be carried in a motorhome. We took two of them to Scotland to put them through their paces. We really

liked the entry level MiRider One, but absolutely adored the all new MiRider One GB3. We can quite see how it won an award for ebike of 2023. Adding to the appeal of the original bike, they loaded the new one with a selection of extras such as: hydraulic disc brakes, a large colour display with USB charge port, lightweight CNC pedals, a rather comfortable Selle Royal saddle and wider riser handlebars. To enhance the gear system, they added a custom belt drive system, which provides a quiet and smooth ride without the oil! Both bikes performed well in our test and we found them very useful when we

44 MOTOR CARAVANNER October 2023

needed to pop to the local shops and to get us to the pub and back. They are the perfect commuter bike for those seeking an economical ride about town.

The MiRider One sells for £1595 while the newer MiRider One GB3 will set you back £2,495.

4. FALCON TECHNOLOGIES

The problem we have when camping is finding a good enough signal when we are inside the van. It’s a common problem many motor caravanners have. Vans are insulated to keep us warm when it's cold and cool when it's hot, however this insulation suppresses

the mobile signal resulting in poor connectivity.

The Falcon 4G combo is a combined internet solution with a router and twin antenna system that is fully waterproof and is mounted on the outside of the van. The device is designed with suction cups that can be used to mount the unit to the interior or exterior of the window. The results are outstanding offering speeds up to 150Mbps. It will allow up to 10 devices to connect to it, so we hooked up our phones, iPads and laptops and even with six devices on the go, the unit served them all. The test unit did not include a

sim-card but you can of course take a prepaid or contract solution with your local provider. The device was network unlocked when we got it allowing easy access when setting up.

The Falcon 150Mbps 4G Combo Router proved useful on the move as well, providing an enhanced browsing experience for Frances who wanted to stream a movie and browse the internet looking for somewhere to stop that night.

Combo is available from Falcon

The All In One Outdoor 4G Combo 150MBPS Router is available from Falcon Technologies for £199.00 with free delivery.

ATE PEDAL LOCK

When we had Voyager built we specified that several security measures be installed right at the beginning. In addition to the Fiat immobiliser, we added a GPS tracker from Global Telemetrics and a Ghost system. Brilliant yes, but the thief does not know it is fitted until after he has broken and in and tried to steal it. What the ATE Pedal lock does is provide an instant and visual deterrent that tells the thief that driving the van away is a lost cause.

Designed and hand made by a motorcaravan owner, ATE Pedal locks are laser cut out of 8mm steel with an interlocking design and no sharp corners to damage a van interior. It is small enough for easy storage and a doddle to install each time we leave the van.

Available from ATE Fabrication and Welding (www. atefabricationandweldingltd.com) cost is £60 incl. postage. Quote make, model and year of van manufacture when ordering.

BEYOND the DRAGON

Frances & Michael Howorth tour North Wales and enjoy great outdoor adventure activities, brilliant beaches and the thrilling mountain scenery.

Medieval castles, inspiring mountains, underground tunnels, sandy beaches and cascading waterfalls. North Wales offers plenty to do and that is what makes it the perfect motorcaravan touring destination. From the borderlands of Wrexham and Llangollen in the east, to the surffringed rocks of Anglesey and the Llyn Peninsula in the west, North Wales packs a lot in. True you can travel from one end to the other in two hours, but if you did that you would miss such a wonderful touring experience.

Our own adventure began in the quaint seaside resort of Llandudno. It is famous for its lovely 19th century pier, which still serves as a landing stage for large pleasure

boats around this coast. Our first stop was Great Orme Head, a limestone headland above the town. We left town on Marine Drive, which offers all year access to the Great Orme summit. This narrow, five mile, oneway toll road has lots of free places to park and enjoy the scenery. At the top there are spectacular views over to Anglesey and Snowdonia. Drivers need to be alert as rock climbers use the road as their base camp, runners race up it and walkers stop to enjoy the view. Marine Drive and the Great Orme are popular with film production companies and it is easy to see why.

We were heading for The Rest and Be Thankful Café and car park, halfway along the road. The café was built in 1908, and there’s an apocryphal story that the then owner’s somewhat dominant wife,

Originally, the cafe was a simple shack, but it has been expanded over time and now has a large main room, a new roof terrace and the best toasted teacakes in the area. Get there before 5pm and ask Dave or Ray nicely – if for a small fee – you can remain overnight in their car

park when they lock up. Watch the sunset over Anglesey and enjoy a safe stay with the most spectacular of views.

There is plenty to do in Llandudno and high on our list, was a trip on the Great Orme Tramway. This cable-hauled, 3ft 6in gauge tramway is open from late March to late October. It takes over 200,000 passengers each year, from Llandudno Victoria Station to just below the summit of the Great Orme headland. Delighting visitors since it opened in 1902, it is the only funicular tramway that travels on public roads. We hitched a lift to the summit and then, as it was a beautiful day, enjoyed the scenic walk back down. Our next stop in town, was Old Board School on Lloyd St., where we parked Voyager inside a huge carpark belonging to what is now a distillery. Penderyn is a Welsh whisky distillery, producing the first commercially available whisky made in Wales since the 19th century. Using water from a spring on Great Orme Head, near the Rest and Be Thankful Café, they use a Faraday Still (unusual in whisky making) creating a range of delightful tipples. We enjoyed a very informative distillery tour and tasted some of

the finished products. No matter how tempting, parking overnight at Penderyn is not allowed!

We left Llandudno the following morning and headed to Beddgelert, a 45 minute drive away. Here we dropped down into the bowels of

Sygun has low winding tunnels and large, colourful chambers, magnificent stalactite and stalagmite formations and copper ore veins

the earth with a dramatic visit to the Sygun Copper Mine. Winner of the Prince of Wales award for tourism, it is one of the wonders of Wales. It is a remarkable and impressive example of how our precious industrial heritage can be reclaimed, restored and transformed into an outstanding and very enjoyable attraction.

Self-guided audio tours allow visitors to explore on foot the old mine workings abandoned in 1903. Sygun has low winding tunnels and large, colourful chambers, magnificent stalactite and stalagmite formations and copper ore veins which contain traces of gold, silver and other precious metals. The presentation with special lighting and sound effects, provides an enjoyable, interesting and realistic glimpse into the hard life of a Victorian copper miner.

It's less than half an hour from Sygun to Llanberis, home to the Snowdon Mountain Railway. Somewhat bizarrely, campervans and motorhomes are not allowed to park in the attraction’s car park, but there is another more welcoming car park not too far away. We boarded the narrow gauge rack and pinion mountain railway and travelled for 4.7 miles to the summit of what the locals call Yr Wyddfa. Since 1896, this little railway has offered visitors a scenic ride to the mountain top. It is easy to see why it has been described as one of the

most wonderful railway journeys in the world. With stunning views, it is a great day out for all the family. But check the weather because in high winds you may not be able to get to the top.

That night we had a pitch booked at The Dinlle Caravan Park, on the coast some 20 miles southwest of Caernarfon. The park enjoys incredible views of the sea and Snowdonia, as well as the longest stretch of sandy beach in North Wales. It is an ideal launchpad for all sorts of adventures. The campsite is well situated for an early morning getaway to the island of Anglesey, the bridge to which can be congested in the rush hours. And we had an early morning appointment with a barrel of seaweed on the Anglesey foreshore!

a place to get away from it all

and that was what we planned.

Accessed by the 19th-century Menai Suspension Bridge and Britannia Bridge, rebuilt in the 20th century, Môn Mam Cymru (or Anglesey in English) is known for its beaches and ancient sites. It is a place to get away from it all and somewhere to get out and do, and that was what we planned.

Our first stop was in Brynsiencyn, to visit a family food business making, they claim, the world's finest sea salt. Halen Môn

finest sea salt. Halen Môn

Sea Salt started in Alison and David Lea-Wilson’s kitchen with a few salt crystals remaining in a pan of seawater left to simmer on the stove. It was then, that Alison and David knew they had found something very special, in the famously clean gulf stream waters that lap the coastline of their island. They set up a business and now their salt is sold worldwide. And, if the rumour is true, President Obama uses the salt to enhance the flavour of his favourite salted caramel chocolate. The enterprise they created offers tours and tastings. If sampling salt sounds slightly bizarre, then we suggest you try it and discover for yourself how different salts taste. Highly educational, hugely entertaining,

and wonderfully enlightening, we thought the tour was great value.

The latest venture at Halen Môn Welsh Sea Salt, is to offer visitors the chance to bath outdoors in a barrel of seaweed, while enjoying the unparalleled view in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. As our campervan does not have a bath, we loved the idea of a good soak. We donned swimming costumes and climbed into our own private upcycled whiskey barrel. It was filled with seaweed and warm water generated as a by-product of the sea salt harvesting. Seaweed is incredibly sustainable – it does not require soil, fertiliser, or fresh water to grow. When harvested, at the right time, it encourages even more regrowth. In warm water, seaweed releases its mineral-dense oils, offering rich relaxation and soothing tired muscles. Our seaweed soak detox was wonderful!

We left Brynsiencyn and headed back to the market town of Menai

Bridge, to visit Plas Newydd. The home of the Marquis of Anglesey, now a National Trust property and garden. It was once home to HMS Conway, the Merchant Navy training school and because he went there as a boy, it brought back many happy memories for Michael.

A mile or so further along the road is the village and the railway station with the longest name in the world. Fifty-eight characters long, Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerych wyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, translates into English as “St. Maria church in the white hazel forest near the rapid whirlpool beside St. Tysilio of the red cave." If nothing else, the large station car park allows you to alight and take the obligatory photograph on the platform. Luckily there is a short name used locally, Llanfair PG!

The medieval town of Beaumaris lies further along the coast with the 13th-century Beaumaris Castle and a Victorian jail. Both are worthy

visitor attractions but the attended car park on the seafront financially discriminates against motorcaravans and made us feel unwelcome. Fortunately, we found on street parking nearby, because we had a voyage to take. Seawake have a flotilla of sightseeing boats that provide exhilarating, highspeed trips from their base on Beaumaris Pier. Our trip, called the Bridges Tour, lasted 1 hour. It saw us blast along the Menai Strait, past Bangor and passing underneath the iconic Menai suspension bridge. We navigated the whirlpools and cross currents of the Swellies and shot under the Britannia Bridge and on towards Port Dinorwick. Speeding along as far as Plas Newydd, we were rewarded with a splendid view of Mount Snowdon. On the return journey, our skipper slowed down and regaled us with stories of smugglers, pointing out some of the exquisite millionaire mansions only visible from boats like ours.

That night was spent at a tranquil, family run and family friendly campsite. Home Farm, in Marianglas, is just minutes away from sandy beaches and close to delightful coastal walks, in an area of outstanding natural beauty. Holyhead, its country park and the magnificent South Stack lighthouse, are not far away. An alternative is the very welcoming club CL Ty Newydd Green Cottage run by Gareth and Nia Jones. They host the perfect stopover if you are set for an early morning Irish Ferry out of Holyhead towards Dublin.

We were heading in the opposite direction to buy some walking shoes in one of the outdoor clothing and equipment shops in Betws y Coed. From there we drove onto Trefriw, where family business Trefriw Woollen Mills has been in operation since 1859. Morgan and Elaine Williams manufacture and sell traditional Welsh tapestry. They do so using raw wool from local farmers and machines which are all over 50 years old and still powered by a vintage water turbine.

For lunch we stopped at Zephyr’s Bar, within the Hilton Hotel in Dolgarrog. Normally you would not associate surfing with the mountains of Snowdonia, but if you do rock up to the Adventure Parc Snowdonia and the Hilton Gardens Inn, that’s exactly what you can do. The hotel is set beside a water park, that amongst many other activities, offers the chance to go surfing. What is more, the hotel has a large area in which motorcaravans are welcome to stay overnight, completely free of charge, with 24 hour security. Even more wonderfully, they allow the use of their showers and toilets. Buy a day pass and campers can enjoy the adventure park's facilities, or simply use the Zephyr’s restaurant bar or coffee shops within the complex.

One hundred and fifty years ago, the McLaren family began developing the gardens of their home in Bodnant, collecting specimens of plants and trees from around Britain and further afield. Today, this haven of rarity and beauty, with its stunning backdrop

of the Carneddau mountains of Snowdonia, is looked after by the National Trust. With intimate corners, sweeping lawns, grand terraces and verdant woodland, it is a delight for the senses and a lasting testament to the incredible vision of generations of the McLaren family and their head gardeners. With year-round colour, the garden can be whatever you want it to be, whether that's a hive of activity, or a haven of tranquillity and relaxation. This is truly a special place for all.

The jewel in the crown worn by North Wales, must surely be Conwy, one of Britain’s best-preserved medieval towns. Park your motor caravan in the long stay Morfa Bach Car Park and enjoy the freedom of the city on foot. Conwy is a true one-off. Well-preserved ancient walls, the most intact in Europe, enclose a town of narrow cobbled streets, nooks and crannies, chock-full of historic buildings. And that’s just the half of it. The walls radiate out from a gritty, dark-stoned castle that, even after all these years, still preserves an authentic medieval atmosphere.

Conwy Castle, a World Heritage Site, was a key part of the ‘iron ring’ of fortresses, built around Snowdonia in the 13th century by Edward I to contain the Welsh. The views from the battlements, with the mountains of Snowdonia one way, the Conwy Estuary the other, are stunning. And it’s from here that the entire town comes into perspective, ringed by a circuit of walls, over three-quarters of a mile long and guarded by no less than 22 towers. A Conwy ‘must-do’ is to walk along these walls, before venturing into the streets below and visiting places like Plas Mawr; the UK’s best-preserved Elizabethan town house and the dinky, Smallest House (see if you can fit inside). Other attractions include Thomas Telford’s Suspension Bridge and the Conwy Culture Centre.

In town there’s a unique mix of shops to delight and entice. Everything from an award-winning

Try the vanilla slice or their Welsh Cakes and trust us when we say all their delicious baked goods are generously portioned and excellently priced. The word Glamping in their name, is a clear indicator that Tan Y Bryn Glamping campsite, in Bryn

Add in luxury bathrooms and you have found yourself a great place to stay. Just make sure you follow the directions on their website rather than your Sat Nav. If not you will get lost, just like we did!

North Wales, is a motor caravanner's adventure playground with activities to keep most members happy. Adrenaline junkies can zip line through abandoned quarries or surf on an inland lagoon, if that rocks your boat. If you want to slow down, North Wales has some of the best walks and cycling in Britain. Fascinating ancient culture and heritage wherever you turn. In short, North Wales has all this in abundance, and a whole lot more! It is just a shame we never saw the dragon!

You want to be able to take everything you need with you when you go away in your ‘van. However, will this overload the rear suspension? Using MAD suspension helper spring kits or semi air conversions from Ekollon will help your ‘van drive more level so it will be:

• Safer

• Have better grip

• Improved traction

• Not bottom out over speed bumps

• Better stability

• And save your jockey wheel

TECH TALK with Gentleman Jack

In this series of Tech Talk we will be looking at various sub-groups of fascinating motorcaravans and at some of their design features, all from an historical perspective. This month:

FARE’S FAIR… motorcaravans converted from buses

Avox-pops ‘straw poll’ of members at a recent rally surprised me with their answers to the following question, “What is the most famous motorcaravan converted from a bus?” Most popular answer was Priscilla [1] from the 1994 film, The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. That most respondents chose something from an (almost) 30-year-old film may give a clue to their age cross-section, and of their liberal views – given the subject matter. For the record, Priscilla is an early 1990’s conversion of an American bus built in Japan by Hino. It’s pre and post film life is shrouded in mystery. It has been variously reported as originally working for Canadian Denny Bus Lines and also for the American Greyhound Lines. Previously, it was thought to be still in regular use as a motorcaravan, minus the pink appendages! Other sources claim that the one currently in-use isn’t the original, but a shorter replacement because the ‘star of the silver screen’ had been kidnapped…yes kidnapped… not stolen. The plot thickens!

According to leading internet search engines, the ‘bus motorcaravan’ most frequently researched online starred in the 1960’s film Summer Holiday. It is an AEC Regent…not as is often erroneously claimed (including by me 30 years ago) a Routemaster… soz! [2] shows the actual wheeled ‘film star’ bearing the registration WLB 991 and [3] is of its famous driver, the (then) teen heart-throb, Cliff Richard. It isn’t uncommon for UK double-decker buses sold out-of-service to enjoy a second life as a motorcaravan, with either full-timers, independent tourists, or with escorted holiday companies.

The top storey of such vehicles is a double-edged sword. Obviously, passing under height barriers and bridges, plus driving through tunnels may be a bit…um…er… challenging! On the other hand, there’s twice the space in the same footprint, plus if one with an open top is sourced, it arrives with a ready-made sun-deck, such as is featured on the Big Snail [4]

Over the pond, re-purposing buses as motorcaravans has given rise to several colloquial terms, including one for those that were originally a ubiquitous yellow school transport bus. Such motorhomes are referred to as

60 MOTOR CARAVANNER October 2023
2 3

‘Skoolies’. Pictured Blue-Bird [5] shows not one vehicle, but five. On the rear platform is a Unimog 4 X 4, with a quad bike on its back. The latter has a child’s pedal go-kart on its rear rack, which itself is home to a remote-control miniature (shoe-box sized) motorhome. [6] is a cut-away illustration showing the principal advantage of Skoolies – a huge square-sided space with full standing-height throughout

its length, just begging to be converted into a home-on-wheels. Note that both Skoolies illustrated are forward-control, though many are bonneted. Correspondent Pietr Van-Vliert sent in [7] with the description that it is a 1987 Volgren B10M which was converted to a palatial motorhome in 2011. It

was claimed that - at the time it was photographed in Australia - it was family-owned and not used for multi-occupancy escorted expeditions, which I thought it would have been! Makes one wonder about the size of the ‘family’!

A personal all-time favourite next [8]. Built in 1949, it started out as a Flxible Clipper ‘state-lines’ bus (what we would call long-haul or regional). However, it only served continued on

for a year before being sold-on as a bare shell for conversion to a motorhome. The converter, Fritz the Flexie (named after the base vehicle) spared no expense in creating a magnificent interior featuring mahogany furniture and top-tackle soft furnishing

continued from p61

fabrics [9]. The only significant modification over the last seventythree years has been replacing the original Buick Straight-Eight engine plus manual transmission, with a Chevrolet 454 mated to an Allison automatic box.

Next, two ‘buses’ that aren’t really. Firstly [10] which isn’t one bus but three joined together… all examples of the 1950’s General American Aerocoach. This triple-decker motorcaravan is known as ‘Peacemaker’ and/ or the ‘Twelve Tribes Bus’. Twelve Tribes were a very controversial religious cult and the bus followed artists such as The Grateful Dead and Bob Dylan when they were on tour. Peacemaker provided (questionable) spiritual guidance, food, and respite for many. It was partly financed by the sale of craft items and baked goods. Attempts to trace its whereabouts have been unsuccessful, perhaps you can help?

Finally, no base vehicle has been more popular with campervan

converters than VW’s type 2 (1950 – present) [11]. It has always been known in the Antipodes and America as a ‘microbus’. What we would call a minibus, they call a short bus. Photograph shows the factory production lines at Wolfsburg Germany in the early 1950’s. A divided windscreen is the reason for this generation being referred to as ‘Splitties’.

The HPC Hydraulic Levelling System is truly a step ahead for motorhome owners. Covering all requirements expected from a levelling system. it is simply and quickly operated using the on-board touch-screen controls or operated remotely from an iPhone 5 and above or an Android phone via a Bluetooth free app. Accompanied by the AS Air Suspension system, all your suspension and levelling needs are catered for.
