approaching the time when Groups hold their AGMs and I would like to remind members that this Club relies on volunteers for the smooth running of events. Each Group requires a committee who work hard to make the year enjoyable for their members, but these people are all volunteers so consider if you can take on one of the positions that are vacant. I am sure if you ask any of your existing or retired committee they will happily explain what is required.

The East Midlands Group were delighted to welcome Mrs Kit Hildred to their Jubilee rally’s Garden Party. Kit along with her husband, Albert, joined the MCC in 1960 and were Founder members of the East Midlands Group in 1962. Alfred served the Group in many Committee roles, including Rally Officer, Secretary and Chairman before being honoured as our Group President in 2001. He was supported throughout by Kit and when Albert died, just before our 50th anniversary, Kit agreed to become our President, a role she kept until a few years ago. The East Midlands members would like to acknowledge the significant contribution Kit and Albert made to the formation of our Group and Kit supporting us for over 60 years of rallying. It was Kit’s birthday on the previous day, so in the photo, our Chairman, Anne Taylor, is presenting Kit with a birthday present as well as some of our 60th anniversary gifts.

There is also a bar for the odd Aftertipple.getting set up, out came our bikes to cycle along the sea wall and promenade to Mablethorpe (to have my hair cut at my favourite hairdressers). You can cycle for miles, looking out to sea, no traffic, although you have to look out for the odd pedestrian and their doggyTherefriends.isapublic footpath direct from the site to the beach at Sandilands. Although we don’t have dogs we enjoyed watching them exercising in the large field opposite. We were originally staying three nights but with the weather being good, and the site so peaceful and friendly we stayed five. We were also offered four nights for the price of three, we will definitely be returning before the season ends in November. Anne Taylor
Following a busy and successful East Midlands 60th anniversary rally, we decided to go to Poplar Farm, a Club CL Site just outside Sutton on Sea. The pitches are situated along the approach to the main site and were spacious with views over the countryside. We had full use of the toilet and showers.
What a great site this was for members to get out and about during our two weeks stay. Using buses, trains and even boats, all 142 motorhomes, visiting from all points of the UK (even Jane & Rosie from Northern Ireland), had an adventurous time. There was much to see and do, with one of our local members taking people on a walking tour of the town’s unknown secrets, collecting £35 donation for The Hub, run by volunteers of the Estuary League of Friends. Most members know any money collected from our activities to Macmillan Cancer Trust and the grand total raised over the two weeks was £270, which will be added to the Looe Casual Campsite in September. An adorable teddy (pictured below) donated by a member for the ‘name the ted’ competition, raised £42 and was won by Rachell, who then auctioned ‘Florence’ off raising another £12. From afternoon tea and cakes, evening meals and many quizzes and silly bingo, the whole time was a joy to myself and Jane, Pete and Janice, whose help was invaluable.

My husband, Steve & I, bought our very first motorhome back in August 2019. We had been contemplating joining a club but didn’t know which one to join as we were finding normal campsites not very friendly and nobody spoke. That was until we met Teresa and the rest of her colleagues at The Bath & West Showground at Shepton Mallet in Sept 2021. Teresa was so friendly and welcoming, we joined on the spot. We received our members pack and a free ruck sack which since September of last year has been a godsend. This year we have been on two Avon rallies (Lady’s Mile & Castle Combe) and have just

Gail: Why could you not change the day to Sunday? Chair: The programme of events is full for Sunday.
The meeting was opened at 3.15pm by Chairman, Mrs Kate GailJones.Blackwell:
Because of work commitments and because it is not a bank holiday weekend, I have to leave here on Sunday so I will not be here on Monday to take part in the draw of the raffle that I have paid for raffle tickets.
Chair: Is there someone that you could leave your tickets with to claim your prizes? Anne Taylor: You can leave them with me and we will ensure you receive any winning prize.
Gail: I have been on the website and I feel that the things are a bit hidden. Chair: We are working on the
MEMBERS’MEETING
12 MOTOR CARAVANNER September 2022
Chair: The National Rally Committee will decide whether to put the programme on the website. We do put the Members’ meeting minutes on the website and you can also view the magazine that the AGM minutes and members meeting are published in, within the library area of the website. The accounts are sent out in the blue book with the magazine to all members.
held at this year’s National Rally at Stafford Showground, on Saturday 11th June 2022
Sharon Jarvis: You must have known what the programme for the National Rally was in advance as you have printed programmes to give out on arrival. Why didn’t you publicise the programme on the company’s website so that the members could see what was going on before they arrived on site? Also could you put the minutes of this members’ meeting and the accounts on the website as well?
Chair: The Club’s funds cannot be used to support the Groups as we need to keep funds in reserve to enable the Club to survive if the income depletes verses costs rising. Regarding the land, CoM do need to invest in property as the money is no longer working for the Club in the bank as the interest rates are low and this will be taken on by CoM to look at.
Chair: CoM will discuss this to see if it is possible to do something, but it is not guaranteed that we will be able to change the course of direction on this issue as these are independent companies making these decisions. website and we will try to get it to be more user friendly and we have noted your comments regarding the programme of the National to be posted on the website.
CLUB NEWS September 2022 MOTOR CARAVANNER 13
Les Kendrick: We will not go out and rush into buying land. We have been looking for years.
Kim Remnant: When you buy a brand new motorhome you are not given an option to buy bottles for gas as they are fitted with underslung tanks for LPG. Can our Club therefore lobby for the petrol stations to keep a supply as they are removing LPG from their outlets and we are struggling to fill up with LPG?
Janet Broadhurst: We are disabled and need our car near our unit as we can’t walk to a carpark or far away. We are not the only ones, but I feel it is unfair that the Motorcycle Group are allowed to have their trailers and bikes within the area allocated for motorhomes. There should be a designated area for them to park their trailers and bikes in.
Chair: I will allow a straw poll to be held here but I must stress that this will not affect the decision of the Council of Management. We have to make this decision based on the fact that the money in the bank is only giving a return of 0.01% per annum, whereas a property or land would increase in value and provide an income which would enhance the bank balance if rented out. Or a site that would be used as a CL Site/ Office as we are currently paying rent for the office which-again-is an expense that could be reduced and invested for the security of the Club year on year. A straw poll was held as an unofficial ballot; conducted as a test of opinion. The results were against from 262 members that attended the meeting but did not represent the whole membership of the Club.
Teresa Woolven: I have attended many of the Zoom meetings that CoM has held. Are you going to continue this way as we are saving money for the Club by not having face to face Chair:meetings? We have reduced the amount of face to face meetings and some are replaced with Zoom meetings for this very reason of saving money. I also intend to continue with the Chairman’s Briefings with the Chairs and Secretaries of the Groups (Informal meeting) to keep you informed of what is going on as we used to only meet up once a year. Now we can meet up on Zoom with no costs there will be no minutes produced just an exchange of information.
Chair: I stated earlier, they were not meetings, they were informal briefings and we will not be taking Minutes at the briefings. This is just my way to keep you informed.
Kate: We will take your comments away for discussion. Brian Barton: I heard you say that you would not put the purchasing of land to a vote, but could we have a straw poll in the room today to see what the members here think about the >>
Unknown: Point was raised to supply each Group with a defibrillator to raise the percentage of survival rate when rallying on site. If CoM cannot supply, could you at least ask the Groups who would want one and use your power to bulk buy to get a better price so that the Groups can save some money. All Groups should have a defibrillator on site.
Sharon Hermitage: 1. Purchase of the land that was discussed within the AGM Meeting can that be put forward to a vote? 2. I am the Rally Officer for Chiltern group at the moment some of our venues are putting up the prices of hiring the halls up to as much as £400. Can the Club help the Groups with these rising costs?
Anne Taylor: We have members that will not rally with the Groups because there is no electric and showers. We would be able to supply that to them if we owned a site.
Chair: That is noted. The National Rally (NR) Committee will take your question into consideration for future years.
Larry Spires: This is a point for all Group Treasurers. If you are rallying on a sports ground for more than 24 hours you do not have to pay VAT. We have just claimed back the VAT from one venue that we have visited.
land proposal. We don’t want land bought; we don’t want the money spent silly. The members want to continue rallying and it is short sighted way to lose memberships.
Bob Thorne: I have attended three Zoom meetings and found it difficult to join and stay on in the meeting because of connections: there were no Minutes taken and now we have a situation where one person is saying one thing and another disagrees. Without Minutes there is no record. I accept that some meetings will be for information only but when it is not the case may we please have Minutes taken.
Larry Spires: Can we try to put the Club’s magazines into the dealerships so that new motorhome owners can be introduced to the Club when purchasing their new motorhomes. We would like to see more children join the Club.
Chair: We did not want to get rid of them. At the time the email had been written, we did not have any children booked into the (NR) but then that changed and we had 5 booked in so we then needed the Junior Leaders to look after them.
Peter Johnston: We are doing just that Larry. We have started a new incentive called the ‘Dealership Reward Scheme’. They have their own discount code so that the new member gets a discount and the dealership will get a reward for plugging the Club to them if they join using the discount code. We are sending them 3 copies of the magazine each month and a joining pack with all our information inside so that they know what our Club offers new members. They also get point of sale materials to advertise the Club. We are fully aware that we are losing money on the first year of the membership but then we will get the full price of the membership the following year. We started this campaign the beginning of the year and we have managed to sign up 20 dealerships so far which includes the likes of Brownhills and Marquis Motorhomes.
No Name: There are two people missing from this meeting today who are Junior Leaders, CoM have not mentioned them today. Why is Chair:that?
John Gough: I feel that we need to look at costs. We need to decide if this is a Club or a business, because the Club will not survive unless you run it like a business. If we do not raise the fees, then I cannot see the Club surviving. We are going to have to face the fact that the price of the membership will have to go up. I would be happy to pay more so that the Club can keep on Teresagoing.
Sharon Hermitage: Can the (NR) Committee please take into consideration the door to door issue at the event. The rally officers have struggled this weekend to park up euro vans.
Guyver: This is the first time that I have had a date for the NR next year. Can we please have some posters for the show stand quickly so that we can start to advertise the dates to try to increase the numbers attending next year. We can also get help on different sections to hopefully get a fun packed event next year. I would also like to say that we do promote our Club to younger people with families and the Groups do need to look after them and run rallies that are suitable for them and the children to have something to do.
Sue Turl: Are Groups allowed to hold rallies during the dates set for the National Rally? Now that you have announced next year’s dates as Thursday 25th till Tuesday 30th May 2023 some Groups may have already booked rallies at the same time.
14 MOTOR CARAVANNER September 2022 CLUB NEWS
The Junior Leaders will get thanked when we do the presentations to the children; they are doing a sterling job looking after the children as always. I do, and always will, thank them for their hard work during the event.
Ian Hill: Can CoM explain why you would like to thank the Junior Leaders when you were thinking of getting rid of them?
Ian Hill: Why don’t you want people with children to join the Club? I am in the industry and I know that there were more people of the 30 something age with children buying motorhomes than what there was retired people at the JacciNEC.Durkee: My husband and I run the recruitment stand at the trade shows and I can tell you that we are targeting younger families to join the Club. Once we have recruited them, they go and visit the Groups on rallies, so it is down to the Groups to ensure that they and the children are made welcome and put things on for the children while they are on site. We have got You-tubers who are younger members now and they put on their channel what the Groups are doing to try to entice new younger members. We are trying our hardest to get younger members involved so if you can come up with any ideas then please come forward and let us know.
Chair: There are places on CoM and we would like people to come and join us if they feel that they could make a difference in a positive way.
Chair: Our standard time for the NR
September 2022 MOTOR CARAVANNER 15 has always been the late May bank holiday. It has changed this year as we had to accept the dates we could get at short notice from the only venue with available dates.
Chair: The AGM is held at the NR each year and we try to entice as many members as we can to attend the AGM, which we are duty-bound to do. It is only one weekend a year which the Club holds and subsidises so that all our Groups can get together as the Motor Caravanners’ Club as a whole.
Brian Herschell: The average attendance of any rally is approximately 10% Group rallies or AGM. David Livesey: I have been a member since April 2021, I have been to about 6 rallies, I have spoken to other new members and they feel that they have been neglected and been left out at the NR within the Group area they have not been included. I feel that this needs to be addressed. They need to be approached and spoken to when they arrive to be informed of what the Groups are doing on the fields.
Paul Girling: New members issue; would it not be a good idea to say in the programme a time for the new members to meet up for information on the event?
Chair: some members do not go to rallies but they do attend the Casual Campsites and use Haven and enjoy the benefits that the Club offers.
Chair: We did hold the first time NR members at the start of this meet –so are you talking about Group level rather than NR level?
Sue Pilkiw: We hold a Group meeting before the start of the NR Event and one of the points that we raised at that meeting was that we welcomed all new members and asked Marshals to make them feel welcome in their Groups and let them know what is going on. We have had Groups ask if they can use a room for Group meetings just because of rain etc and we can accommodate that if we have rooms available – but we are not able to provide a room for all Groups at the same time. Also, there are only five people on the NR committee, so we just can’t do this without the support from all the hosts and the Groups’ support.
Frank Badrick: Could we not provide stickers for the windscreens saying ‘1st timers’: Sue Pilkiw: Good idea, we will discuss at the NR committee meetings.
Les Kendrick: Did you notify your Group Secretary that you were attending the NR and entering the Boules competition so that he could get the details for you?
Les Kendrick: The last we heard from the Secretary there was only one member coming from the Scottish Group and we arranged for them to park with the Lancashire Group.
Chairman: Closed the meeting at 4.05pm
Michael Harris: We talk about our members attending rallies, we have 280 members in our Group but we do not see them at the rallies. We only see a small percentage.
Every member is able to talk to the person in the van next to them. Are you new? Come along with us and let’s do this together.
Steven Sellick: Would it be a good Idea to locate the smaller groups in the centre of the larger Groups as there are only two members from Scotland and we are out on a limb. I wasn’t welcomed when I came in.
Secretary: The NR Committee will note your comments for next year.
Steven Sellick: We wanted to go to an event; the Boules competition. We were not told when it was on, we asked about it but nobody came back to us to inform us of a day and time. Sue Pilkiw: That was been run by a Group so it wasn’t in the NR programme. We are grateful to the Groups for organising these competitions and realise that we have to improve on the communication of where and when details.
Dave Geall: Peter Johnston, While you are talking to all the dealerships could you not pressurise them to stock and supply LPG gas? Brownhills do but there are not many that do.
Brian Barton: Why can’t the Groups hold rallies at the same time as the NR? If you can’t attract enough people to the NR you need to look at what you are providing at the event. People do not want to travel from up north or far down south. You should let the members choose where they want to go.
Secretary: It has been the standard for many years where the Groups do not hold rallies at the same time as the NR and that will stand as we need to cover the AGM as stated in the CfG and Companies House.
Steven Sellick: Yes I did.
Paul Girling: Yes, that is correct. You held the new members meeting on Thursday but that is a work day, so a lot of new members would not be here until Friday evening.
Chair: We will note that for consideration. Paul Girling: I’m just asking that you put a time maybe on the Saturday morning for the Group’s to hold their meetings to welcome their new members to their Group to get to know their members.
Sue Pilkiw: I am with you on that and I do feel that we could put all the smaller Groups together so that you can mingle with each other. But I would also add that this field is a nightmare to pitch up compared to other venues. I am very sorry that you feel that way and we will try to improve that for you.

Footer: We recommend taking a close look at the following inspected and evaluated motorcaravans and suggest you add them to your shortlist! Another ‘runner’ that we couldn’t include because of magazine space restrictions, but which the author rates highly, is the Auto-Sleeper Air. Do check it out!

16 MOTOR CARAVANNER September 2022 SHOWROOM SHORTLIST
Buying advice from Gentleman Jack This month: Ford Transit Custom UK conversions T his month we are featuring one of the UK’s it’sbest-sellingconsistentlyvehicles,notacarbut a light commercial vehicle, the Ford Transit Custom. Sandwiched in-between the compact Transit Connect and the larger and heavier Transit models, the Custom is the perfect size for conversion into a motorcaravan, be it an elevating-roof campervan or a high-top motorhome. It drives so well [A] that its popularity among converters and purchasers is ever increasing, with the result that it is now snapping at the heels of the ubiquitous VW Transporter. This shortlist has a tight focus and only looks at UK converters that have included a loo in the layout. As the ‘small room’ is a deciding factor, we’ve included photographs of all of them, for comparison. Wellhouse Leisure’s Lux XL [B] utilises a folding door and the WildAx Triton [C] includes a shower. Devon’s Firefly has a solid (hinged) privacy partition [D] and the Swift Monza has the smallest ‘small room’ in that it is just a cupboard for a freestanding Dometic 972 Porta Potti. The latter can also be accessed from the exterior through the offside sliding door (for emptying) and adjacent is an exterior shower [E]. The amount and type of storage varies between models, so make sure its suitable for your ‘essentials’. Particularly impressive was the full height slide-out larder [F] in the AutomaticWellhouse.transmission is available as an extra-cost option and all can be driven by category B licence holders.

3 Gas storage…some have a dedicated cupboard for safe transport of exchange or refillable cylinders, others opt for an underslung LPG tank.

LeisureWellhouseLux XL Yorkshire-based Wellhouse Leisure has converted more Transit Customs than any other UK converter. The company evolved from pre-owned Hymer and Westfalia specialists Deepcar Motorhomes’ International. Proprietor David Elliott has been the ‘driving force’ behind both companies and remains very much at the ‘steering wheel’ today. A lifelong motorcaravanner, his enthusiasm for - and knowledge of - our pastime is legendary. Lux XL (twin single-bed option) offers a roomy and practical layout, with a range of furniture finishes and soft furnishings fabrics for purchasers to choose from. Standard equipment level is high, with alloy wheels, solar panel, energy efficient compressor fridge with slide-out access, an underslung LPG tank, ceramic bowl loo, plus an exterior BBQ point. Layout consists of swivelling cab seats, ahead of two crash-tested single rear passenger seats, with a nearside kitchen and offside loo bringing up the rear. Wellhouse currently builds the Lux XL on the long wheelbase ‘Limited’ version of the Transit Custom Kombi, fitted with Ford’s own high-top. In the past Lux XL was also offered with the option of Wellhouse’s own GRP extra-high-top and this may be of interest to those buying pre-owned examples. £58,750

WildAx Triton There must be something in the Yorkshire air because our second converter is also in the county. A couple of years ago Elland based WildAx Motorhomes became part of the European Rapido Group and the synergy has had some really positive results regarding product development, and yet the founder (Duncan Wildman) remains at the helm providing a very personalised service. Utilising an elevating-roof version of the Transit Custom was pure genius. The old adage that, ‘most manufacturers can build a good big motorcaravan, but it takes real skill and innovation to build a good small motorcaravan’ is very applicable here. An unusual lounge layout features a double inwardfacing settee forward on the offside, plus a forward-facing double settee/ rear travel seats, just ahead of the nearside wardrobe. All combine to make a lower double-bed. Four travel seats, open plan lounge-diner, wellequipped kitchen, loo and proper shower, all in a package around the same height as most 4x4 ‘Chelsea Tractors’. Will fit under some/most height barriers but not all, thus take wellcare and attach a label showing its height onto the driver’s sun visor. it conversion, use

Devon Fireply LWB Devon Conversions is actually based in County Durham, though the company was founded in the late 1950’s in the coastal resort of Sidmouth, Devon. At one stage Devon Conversions offered a wider variety of base vehicles than any other UK converter. Although they have streamlined the choice somewhat, they still have ‘something for everyone’ thanks to flexibility of long-serving MD Peter Gowland and his workforce. This layout transferred from the Renault Trafic to the Ford Transit Custom a while ago. Custom(s) plural actually, because although the featured Firefly is on the long wheelbase variant, Devon also offers it on the short wheelbase model (overall length 4.973m/16’ 4”), for those where parking space at home is at a premium. The shorter version has the same lounge, sleeping accommodation and loo, but reduced wardrobe space and a tad less kitchen worktop. ‘Greener’ actually, as Bailey already considers any environmental impact with its development plans. Recently it was announced that all three of its Bristol sites will be switching to 100% fully renewable energy supply in October of this year. All the electricity consumed will be from wind, hydro or solar power. These do not create any carbon emissions at the point of generation and are naturally replenishing. Managing Director Nick Howard commented, “Switching to the exclusive use of renewable energy supplies is the next important step in helping us achieve our sustainability and social responsibility goals.”

47 vans came to Swaffham Rugby Club for our preNorwich show rally. We had visitors from several groups. On Friday, we all were in the clubhouse for tea etc. and Bingo which was very successful for some members. The weather was kind to us. In fact, Monday, and Tuesday, too kind and everyone found shade under their awnings. On Saturday, most went into town to the market and retail therapy. Saturday evening since we could not use the clubhouse Keith and Teresa organised delivery of fish and chips which went down well. Sunday after tea and coffee members sat outside, the KUB game was set up and was well used and, in the evening, we had a music quiz from Paul Cook. Monday the weather was so hot most sat outside. Whilst playing the Kub game Terry knocked the Queen over so hard it split in two! Tuesday same as Monday with the heat and Wednesday Bingo was played in the club house. A very good rally and thanks to the stewards.
40 vans came to Sheringham for a mixed bag of weather although it was not cold. Friday evening Bingo was played and Saturday most went into town or further afield. Since it was carnival week, the town was heaving! Saturday evening, we were entertained by Lloyd E Moon and artist we had not seen before. He sang a great mix of all types and there was something for every one’s taste in music. Sunday morning, we drew the large raffle after coffee. In the evening, we were entertained by Dave and Pat Hills with a mixture of music. CHILTERN Two rallies to report on this month. Thanks to Sharon for the first and Ros for the second. The Chiltern rally at Bagmere Barn in the picturesque village of Charney Bassett, had eight vans in total, and took place over an extremely hot July weekend. Due to the heat, most members spent a lot of time sheltering from the sun! Over the course of the weekend, we had a fiendishly difficult quiz, some delicious fruity punch, and fish and chips delivered from the local pub. Some members whiled away a good few hours playing Cribbage. Most had food at the highly recommended Chequers Pub. The site owner kindly came and spent an hour or so with us. The weekend was nicely rounded off with some Dessert Wine and homemade brownies. The rally finished a day early due to the Met Office warning of an impending record breaking hot few days. Thanks go to the hosts, Angela, Christine and Mike, and Val, who put a lot of effort into making a great rally, despite the weather.
>> GROUP NEWS September 2022 MOTOR CARAVANNER 33 quiz organised by Roger and Rowena. Mark and Penny provided background music. Saturday afternoon, judges from the committee awarded Ray and Juliet a bottle of wine for the best decorated motorhome. In the evening we had Play your cards right, hosted by Sue with her assistant Dolly Dealer alias Kevin. Hilary and Rowena sold the raffle tickets and ran the raffle. Once again Penny provided the background music. Heavy rain overnight continued until late morning on Sunday, when the committee put on a wonderful Sunday lunch including wine and beer, provided by the Avon MCC. Everyone agreed the food and drink was delicious. During the celebration, we raised a glass to the memory of Brian Gautier, a long standing member of the Avon group who had recently passed away, condolences to Christine and family. Brian’s favourite record was played, Rockin All Over The World, by Status Quo, to which many danced or rocked along with. Sue hosted a Jubilee quiz which was fun and enlightening. There was a prize for the best dressed table outside a van which was won by Mr and Mrs Crocker and Mr and Mrs Drake. Mark and Penny’s table was adjudged the best dressed table in the hall. After the rally was over, several people stayed on before travelling on to the national at Stafford. Weymouth and Portland RFC. Rally 22-27 June: Thanks to Mark and Karen who hosted the rally with the kind help from Caroline and Richard who stepped in at the last minute to co-host, as Mark and Penny were laid low with covid. The weather was sunny and warm as the 33 vans arrived 18 of which were Avon. Unfortunately, all of the planned events had to be postponed due to the ongoing threat of the latest Covid variant but hopefully can go ahead in the not too distant future. Everyone who attended the rally were very understanding and so it was a lovely free and easy event. Many people walked along the footpath into Weymouth and along the promenade to the town centre. There have been improvements to the rugby ground with a caddy shack café next to the site serving delicious food at reasonable prices. Beside the rugby field is a nature reserve with a lake. Wading in the lake late in the evening was an egret hoping to catch a fish, while five of his friends were perched in nearby trees. It caught nothing for the ten minutes I stood observing it. Take care, Allan Upcoming rallies: 5-10 August: Walcott RFC Lansdown, Bath, BA1 9BJ. 10-15 August: Balloon Fiesta, Parsonage Farm, Long Ashton, Bristol, BS41 9LU. 18-22 August: Cotswold School, Bourton-on-the-Water, GL54 2BE. 25-30 August: Warren Farm, Dawlish, EX7 0NG. EAST MIDLANDS East Midlands Group AGM will be held at 10am on Saturday 22 October, 2022 at Wellingore Memorial Hall, Memorial Hall Drive, Wellingore, Lincs, LN5 0JA. Nominations for the East Midlands Committee are invited, to be received by Secretary by noon 1 October, 2022. Nomination forms for the Committee are available from Sue Pilkiw, Group Secretary.
A couple of the group enjoyed the fishing on site. Some also went to the local pub for a meal. We even had an ice cream van visit us on site! We were treated to a couple of light showers which were a welcome interlude to the hot weather.
On Saturday afternoon everyone watched a boules match, with cake for everyone, followed by yet more strawberry punch! Such a great rally, thank you Barry and Merle. (The owner of the meadow assured us that the entrance to the site would be improved in the future, sadly it proved too dangerous for Mick and Julie this time, shame.)
The next rally was enjoyed by 14 Chiltern members, two East Midlands, one Anglia and one from Severn Valley. Barry and Merle, our hosts, arrived in bright sunshine to our site for the weekend at Cropredy, a pretty village in North Oxfordshire with lovely walks and a canalside cafe and bazaar. A canal on one side of the meadow and the river on the other. We were parked up in a large circle and we all joined for our social events in the shelters in the middle of the field where we enjoyed a number of quizzes and a raffle.
Reminder to members attending rallies: Payments for all rallies have been for the last two years made by either using a debit or credit cards.
Likewise, Nominations for the Hazel Turk Trophy for any member of our Group whose participation in Group activity is considered to be deserving of recognition. Hello everyone. July saw us return to the Basingstoke Canal Centre in Mytchett after a few years, and for several it was their first visit to this lovely campsite bordering the canal. The prospect of record temperatures clearly deterred some, but even so, 16 East Wessex vans were joined by three visiting vans from Kent, southwest Peninsula and Yorkshire groups. We welcomed new East Wessex members Norma and her adorable cockapoo Lana, who charmed everyone; also, Stella and Martin on their first rally after joining six years ago. Hope you all enjoyed yourselves and will come out with us again. The weather certainly didn’t disappoint, unbelievably hot through the day and those who sat or dozed outside their vans or in the pods had to keep moving to follow the shade. Some explored nearby, others headed to the visitor centre café for a cooked breakfast or afternoon tea and watching the activities on the canal. We met in the pods for afternoon coffee and again in the evening. Host Larry challenged our slumbering grey matter with one of his multiple-choice quizzes, never as simple as he promises. It was pleasing to see- and definitely not a fix - that most of our visitors and new members won at card bingo or in the raffle. It was back to Weyhill Fair, Andover for our next rally, East Midlands Group: 60th Jubilee Rally
Latest update to our rally programme: We have added an extra rally for the weekend 30 September to 2 October at Colsterworth Sport and Social Club, Old Post Lane, Woolsthorpe by Colsterworth, Nr Grantham, Lincs, NG33 5PG. See website for further information.

EAST WESSEX
Rempstone Steam and Country Fair: 35 vans attended this new venue. One first timer from East Midlands. We were parked up on a very large field by our stewards for the weekend Anne, Ron, Pete and Debbie. The weather was fantastic all weekend. On Thursday and Friday the fair was starting to set up, so the members went for walks or sat outside their vans chatting and enjoying the beautiful weather (and a little drink). Saturday and Sunday we had free entry into the show where we could see everything from vintage cars and motorbikes to steam engines and agricultural vehicles. There was also jousting, falconry and a pipe band and various demonstrations in the show ring. There were stalls selling all manner of goods and craft displays and a ukulele band. There was also a wide range of food outlets available plus a bar and tearoom. Everyone really enjoyed the weekend and I’m sure this venue will become a regular in our rally programme. Yvonne. What a fantastic 60th Jubilee weekend was had by the 59 vans that attended the rally at Springfields Event Centre. The weather was rather windy but dry. The vans were parked up by the committee and members could go into the hall for a welcoming drink and chat. In the evening bingo was played, raffle tickets sold and tickets for a memorial decanter donated by Dave and Carol were on sale. There was a team quiz, won by Ken’s team and then it was karaoke time. Didn’t know we had so much talent within the SaturdayGroup!wasa day to go exploring the area or the men taking the ladies shopping. In the afternoon there was a hog roast and then it was time for the members to go and put on their 60’s fancy dress attire and dance the night away to the fantastic ‘Strobe’. Sunday started with a coffee morning with the raffle draw and the draw for the memorial decanter which was won by Ian. In the afternoon we welcomed a special guest, Mrs Kit Hildred, one of our founding members who joined us all in having a cream tea. There was outside games which was won by Bob Smart and a tabletop sale and a tombola to support our charity. Also included was a Glamorous Granny and Knobbly Knees competitions. In the evening we were entertained by Steve Dell. A big thanks to everyone who organised and to everyone who attended and took part in making it a special event and here’s to the next sixty years!

>> GROUP NEWS September 2022 MOTOR CARAVANNER 35 where 13 East Wessex vans were joined by five from West Wessex, and one each from Chiltern, Kent and Sussex plus one others from further afield en-route to Spain.
On Sunday, another sunny morning was spent lazing about. We had a coffee morning when Dave gave the Chairmans waffle (without the Chairman, you were missed Bob). Then off home after a very enjoyable weekend with good hosts and good company. John 5-7 August: Essex had a chilling out weekend at Hook Farm, Mundon. We had a good turnout for this lovely venue. The bus route went to either Maldon or Bradwell on Sea both very nice places to visit. Lovely large level field with Essex Group
A week before the rally we cancelled the planned communal barbecue due to the high fire risk, only to find the field surprisingly green on arrival. Friday was another very hot day, many staying onsite, venturing out only for lunch. In the evening a couple (who shall remain nameless) offered to play and sing to us, it soon becoming clear that one of them had ever so slightly overindulged his afternoon tipple, much to our amusement. Ah well, these things happen. The rest of the rally was overcast and cooler, with even a sprinkling of light rain. We met up for a strawberry cream tea on Saturday afternoon, polishing off the leftovers on Sunday. The singers entertained us with more songs from their repertoire and got us all joining in; John danced up and down the pods as only he can. Many thanks to hosts Val and Mitch.
Upcoming rallies: All with hardstanding and use of hall. Bookable only if stated. AGM: Sunday 23 October at 11am: (Note change of venue.) Fixed weekend cost £32 (£28 singles).
Bookings: Tony 01962 865522. Arrivals after 5pm. ESSEX Can I thank our marshals at the National, John and Linda for parking the Essex group and also Teresa and Peter for organising party night. As I had various meetings, it took the weight off my shoulders, and due to other commitments, couldn’t attend the entire weekend. Our weekend at Grange Farm in June hosted by Barbara and Nigel had good weather. Once all parked, Friday was a chill out evening with approximately six quests erected for people to join in and have a drink or two. On Saturday, some people ventured into Clacton by bus with others finding a hostillery in the local town. In the afternoon, we had bingo and raffle with a get together in the evening with drinks. Sunday was a chill out day with people going for Sunday roasts but unfortunately, those that do that ‘W’ word had to leave! We personally used this weekend as a chill out weekend after two busy rallies (Queens Jubilee and the National). Grange Farm is a very popular venue and will continue to book, but as a campsite has to be pre-booked.
15-17 July: This rally was held at one of our favourite sites, Clare Priory. This site seems very lucky for us, as every time we go there, we have good weather. We arrived to find that the road to the site was closed. This meant a very long detour around country lanes to get to the other end of the lane. We (like most) got lost and in the end, it took us over an hour to get there. But, we had a very warm welcome from the rally marshals and friends which made it worth the journey. We were told that we were not the only ones who had had a long journey. We were fortunate that the large oak tree which stopped us from parking around it in the past because of dangerous branches had been removed and therefore, there was more room to park the motorhomes. Our hosts for the weekend were Gill and David which was their first rally they’d hosted with help from experience hosts Chrissy and John. On Friday, it was a game of bingo and general natter and chatter. A ‘Pick Yourself a Cocktail’ anagram was handed out for everyone to do over the weekend. Then off to bed. Saturday saw a lovely sunny morning and most members made their way into Clare for a look around and for the Saturday market, which if you blinked, you missed it. Back to the site for lunch and then we had a games afternoon kindly done by Clive and Chris. Very enjoyable and lovely under the shade. There were numerous games enjoyed by those that played them. On Saturday evening, we had a communal BBQ with a Hawaiian theme with everyone in some sort of Hawaiian shirts or flowery dresses and even some ladies in grass skirts. We were provided with Pimm’s, courtesy of the marshals, which went down very well. Hawaiian music was provided by Pete and Jan which made it feel like a tropical evening, especially with the high temperature of the day. A Hawaiian quiz was read out by Gill but provided by Malcolm. Could it be a bit easier next time for us Malcolm? Also at the evening, we had Tina and Pete attend who were staying locally in a bed and breakfast as they are without a motorhome at the moment, lovely to see you both and it just shows you can attend a function when you are waiting for a new motorhome. The raffle was drawn with numerous prizes, and we were lucky enough to win the last prize. The answers to the quiz were given and prizes given to the winners.

Reservations not required, plenty of room for parking. 9-11 December: Greatstone Primary School, Greatstone. 30 December-2 January 2023: St. Richard’s School, Bexhillon-Sea (with kind permission of the Sussex Group).
Sunday and another lovely day. We had the chairman’s waffle, and it was bring your own coffee or tea. We could stay on the site for as long as we wanted which was very nice of the site owner as it was such a lovely day.
Upcoming rallies: 2-4 September: Pleshey Village Hall, CM3 1HJ. 16-19 September: Grange Farm, CO16 OHG (Bookable rally). 7-9 October: AGM Chelmer Valley High School, CM1 7ER (Bookable rally). 4-6 November: TBA. 2527 November: Mayflower High School, CM12 ORT.
Our first rally in July was at Victoria Park, Southport along with 100s more motorhomes and caravans from many camping clubs all wanting to see the air show. New hosts Bobby and Viv and Rob and Angie helped by Mel and
Once set up, everyone was sitting outside to enjoy the sunshine. Friday evening, we had bingo, not with our usual caller Nigel but Peter with his mobile with an app. It was very entertaining as the caller made various funny comments whilst calling out the numbers. Once again, I was unlucky and did not win but perhaps that was because I did not play but Linda did play. It was Sue’s birthday, and she came around with birthday cake for everyone which was extremely nice. Thanks Sue. We sat around chatting and listening to music provided by Peter. Raffle tickets were sold and then it started to get a bit chilly, and everyone went into the gazebos that had been put up for members to go in. Thank you, Peter, for the bingo and music.
Sandwich Lakes 22-25 July: This new-to-us site was a fantastic location. For those that liked fishing, there were five lakes to enjoy. The site also had a restaurant which offered a good selection of meals at reasonable prices. We could also use the site facilities. For those that liked walking, Sandwich town was not too far away and those that wanted to go further afield, well the bus stop was close by and a regular service into Canterbury. Again, the weather was fabulous. 19 vans attended, three Essex, 13 Kent, two Sussex and one Chiltern. Unfortunately, the hosts were taken ill just prior to the start, so the Committee stood in but choose to run a relaxing ‘do-your-own-thing’ rally apart from the coffee meet on the Sunday. I know I am biased, but this relaxing weekend also worked very well. Thank you and I hope the original hosts are feeling better.

36 MOTOR CARAVANNER September 2022 Essex Group
Saturday dawned and another lovely hot day. Most members went and caught the bus to Maldon where there was a carnival in the afternoon. The bus driver must have wondered what hit him when a very large group got on his bus, he must have thought it was an OAP outing. In the late afternoon tables were set out in a line for a communal dinner. How many men do you need to put up a level table. The answer is in the photo. We had great fun watching them trying to get the tables level. Although I still thought Peter’s table was not level. After the meal it was a get together between the gazebos the raffle was drawn by the birthday girl Sue who pulled her own ticket out and won first prize and then Sue kindly pulled out my ticket for second prize. We sat around until it became a bit chilly and then it was inside the gazebos.
Committee: A number of committee members have decided to step down this year after serving this Group for several years. It is therefore essential a New Committee is found. If you would like to find out more about what is involved, please feel free to speak to a Committee member. If you are interested in joining, please submit your nomination by the 14 October.
Matunda Rally 15-18 July: Thank you to Steve and Sharon for hosting this rally. I would also like to thank the Motorcycle group for joining us as well. We had amazing weather, perhaps a little too warm but we are not complaining. The Motorcycle group had a lovely ride out through the Kent countryside and the owner of the site was very pleased to see the group gather and ride off together. An ex-biker himself, I think this evoked a few forgotten memories for him. The non-bikers enjoyed a relaxing time with some walking into Canterbury and others just as far as the Garden Centre. Early evening, we had some challenges with garden games: Kubb, The Ladder Game, Archery, Skittles, Ball in Buckets etc. Very good quiz from the hosts. 18 vans attended, eight from Kent, nine Motorcycle Group and one from Nene.
New Year Rally: Bexhill: Please note this is a bookable rally as we are restricted to the number of vans in attendance. Please contact the Group Secretary Jan Wellard of the Kent Group, to reserve your place. Please remember to visit our Facebook page, Kent Group of the Motor Caravanners’ Club or kentgroupmcc.weebly. com for the latest updates and further information. If you are aware of someone who does not have internet access, please consider calling them to keep them updated.

September 2022 MOTOR CARAVANNER to Sandra and Viv but not until after they were confronted by Bobby and Robs’ version of The Full Monty! Jade helped her dad Dean doing DJ and we enjoyed the different music sheSaturdaychose. started and ended with rain! But by the time the Crafty Crew met at 11am it had cleared. Val taught us a new way to enjoy colouring first making random crossing lines on a piece of paper using 1p and a pencil. That evening we met early to enjoy the buffet before the artist but in between Mel had to take the chair for his surprise which was Rob dressed as Marylin singing ‘The Song’! We all had a really good night ending with dancing and Best of Friends. Upcoming rallies: 9-11 September (two nights): Lancashire Canberra Club, BB8 7DP. From M6 take the A59 Whalley Road. Entrance on right at BAE site. Start 2pm. Bar drinks only. 23-25 September (two nights): Lancashire Warton Cricket Club, LA5 9QJ. From M6 take the M601 towards Milnthorpe. Turn left at Borwick Avenue, club on right just after low bridge. Tall ‘vans should approach via Carnforth. Own drinks. Bookable with Barbara. 7-9 October (two nights): Lancashire Warren Farm Equestrian Centre, via Formby bypass, L37 0AN. Own drinks. AGM Membership Cards required.
Sandra. There were 33 ‘vans including first time ralliers Liz and David plus Ellen and Brian from Northern Counties and three ‘vans from north-west Midlands and north Wales.
Friday evening most met in the event tent for bingo presented for the first time by Bobby. He was very bossy but of course it soon turned to laughter. Jack gave us pleasant background music. Saturday was sunny with a cool breeze but clear for the air show. We had a good view on a grassy bank just above a busy area bordering the beach. The commentary was clear and interesting, and the displays better than I expected from the Black Eagles of the South Korean Air Force. Almost as good as the Red Arrows who were terrific. We gathered again in the evening for more laughs and music and Take Your Pick presented by Brian and Mel followed by Bobby’s quiz, won by Ken’s team after a tiebreak. Sunday was very sunny, and many stayed in the shade to watch the air show again. Some of us then had to leave for reasons of work or medical appointments etc. Hopefully to return for part two! On our return, there had been changes but overall numbers were similar. Some visited Formby and Liverpool which they enjoyed. The evening was similar to the previous weekend, lots of chatter and laughter. On Saturday most people stayed local, visiting shops, cafes, and pubs disguised as restaurants and also the seafront which was very hot by noon. When it cooled, our friends learned how to play boules, even having a knockout which their teacher luckily won! Later it was back to the event tent where some who were rallying with Lancashire for the first time joined in. Lisa closed the rally thanking the hosts including Mel and Sandra and Carole and Jimmy for all their work. The last event of July was at Aspull RUFC. Our hosts were Bobby and Viv and Rob and Angie (who at 10:30am (having set off early) joined a massive queue on the motorway and didn’t arrive on site until 5pm! Looking rather frazzled!) No prizes for guessing which pair had the paperwork for the rally. The chairman welcomed 17 ‘vans including one from Northern Ireland. It was a weekend of birthday celebrations especially Sandra on Friday and Mel on Saturday plus four or five others! As it was Mel’s 75th, we were treated to a super buffet and an artist, vocalist, Vicki St. Clair. On Friday we had bingo then we sang happy birthday Lancashire Group: Mel’s surprise
MOTORCYCLE 15-18 July, Matunda with Kent group: Nine members of MCG came to this site. There was lots of room for parking and bike trailers. Our first ride out on Friday was to Herne Bay, led by Adrian. It was a warm day and we enjoyed two hours by the seaside. We joined in with the Kent group in the evening for games and chatter. Sunday was a free day. Some went off on motorbikes to Teapot Island and others went cycling or walking to explore the area. The weekend flew by and on Monday we travelled to our own MCG rally at Rye 18-23 July. Hosted by Jimmy 2 Sticks, Pete and Debbie. The very warm weather didn’t stop us exploring the area and there was plenty to see in Rye and beyond. On Tuesday, Adrian led a Ride out to Headcorn Airfield and onto the Route 1066 Cafe. It felt like riding into a hairdryer all day. We were glad of the breaks to remove our jackets and helmets. A different sort of motorbike riding for many and luckily, we don’t experience many days like this! On our return to site, many plunged into showers or put their feet into cool tubs of water. That evening, we all sat under the trees for our evening get together. As usual we enjoyed lots of laughter and chatter. Our Thursday ride out, led by Adrian was to Hythe and Dungeness. But on our journey via the narrow country lanes to Hythe, we got held up behind a large lorry carrying a Static Caravan. It kept getting stuck on the overhead tree branches. After watching the people in the escort car cut these branches down so we could progress, we managed to squeeze the bikes under one side of the trailer and continue. We stopped for lunch at the Railway Station on Dungeness beach. That evening, Mary and Alan, visitors from the Sussex group gave us a musical treat with Irish songs,

By the time you are reading this, our group will have held its Diamond Jubilee Rally to celebrate our 60 years as a group – there will b a full report in next month’s magazine.
OldWheeltapperDairyFarm, Upper Stowe, July 22-24: We welcomed eight vans to the field on top of the hill. One visitor from Anglia and seven from Nene Valley. We shared the field with a flock of lambs, being a source of great interest to them (mint sauce?), If we had erected our Shelter, I think they would have spent the night in it.
Members were unable to have BBQs due to the tinder dry grass and the wind. However, despite the wind, it was sunny and most of us enjoyed the hospitality of the Craft Centre, and the excellent food in the Barn Cafe. Alan and Peggy Upcoming rallies: 8-11 September: Scarecrow Rally, Harpole, NN7 4DJ. Cost: £12 pupn. 22-26 September: Cranford Steam Rally, Cranford, Kettering. Cost: £TBC. 10-13 October: AGM Rally, Barnstones CandC Site, Great Bourton, OX17 1QU. Cost: £12 pupn including electric and rally fee.
Our second Lakes tour has now taken place, starting at Grasmere which was a bit drizzly but we had 35 vans attend with visitors from Lancs, NWM & NW, Yorks and East Mids, and first time visitor from Severn Valley. Following on to a new site at Windermere, a fabulous venue and the weather improved. 26 vans attended with visitors from Lancs, NWM&NW, and Scotland with a new Scottish member being signed up for the Scottish group. Many thanks to Allan and Kim, and John and Laine for hosting. Our next rally, hosted by Jean and Alan Hope, was a new venue at Crimdon Farm, with 16 vans at this site overlooking the sea, including two new members. The weather was mixed but good enough to allow a casual get-together on the field on theNext,Saturday.wewere at Great Ayton, Cricket Club with 22 vans including three Yorks visitors, thanks to Dave and Pam Brack for hosting a great rally. Lovely flat field and nice club house, just a shame the weather was not so good. Apparently, Pam and Dave’s quizzes caused quite a bit of rivalry and laughs. Also, Neil arranged one of his now regular walks. Onward to another new site for our group, Thirsk Racecourse (thanks to Yorks Group). Hosted by Kevin Pratt and Sue Cole. After a damp start it brightened up for a couple of days. Several members walked into Thirsk on Monday for a wander round the market and the many local eateries. We had a van draw and riddle quiz courtesy of Julie Broughton (Yorks). The van draw was won by Paula and Tony Edwards and the riddle quiz was won by Neil and Jo Huggon.
Neil and Jo Huggon organised a French rally in June at La Tranch-sur-Mer which was a great success with 20 vans from 8 different groups attending. This was a great campsite with direct access to a lovely sandy beach. Rally activities included wine tasting, quizzes, bike rides, and a beach party. Due to the high price of drinks in the local bars in the town, we even created ‘Bring your Own’ Wetherspoons on a free pitch and named it ‘The Welcome Inn’. A great time was had by all, there was only one question on everyones lips“Where are we going next year?”
Upcoming rallies: 3-7 September: Bents Park, South Shields. 7-11 September: Alnwick. 23-26 September: Beadnell. See website for details. The AGM will shortly be upon us and we need members to volunteer to go on
Lizzie and David (our newest members of MCG) joined us at these two rallies. This was how Lizzie summed up our stay: “Super glad we joined up with the Motorcycle Group. What a friendly bunch, who made us very welcome. It was the first time we had ridden in a large group of bikes and the rules were explained very clearly. Sociable drinks and games in the evenings combined with good conversation really made for a thoroughly enjoyable time. Look forward to catching up with group next time.”
38 MOTOR CARAVANNER September 2022 GROUP NEWS singalong songs and some action songs.
A total of 32 vans from six different Groups were welcomed to Reydon Community Centre by Denis and Jane and Paul and Pat, our stewards for what turned out to be a glorious week for those attending this very pleasant venue. The hall was hired on two occasions during the week, where Jane and Pat had organised a pretty impressive tombola, which was well supported. Paul had organised his usual motoring quiz, which attracted a few moans of frustration among the participants. A lot of people just chilled out sitting around their vans as the weather was good to us. Jane and Denis organised field sports including archery and quoits, which proved to be popular, followed by cakes. Chairman Tony also prepared a general knowledge quiz, which interestingly started at number thirty something and certainly stirred up a few grey cells. There was a regular bus service into Southwold and further afield, that was certainly supported by a lot of our members. Others with bicycles, mopeds and cars were able to venture to further flung venues around the area. On inspection of the bottle recycling bin on site, it would appear that Adnam’s Brewery was a popular outing! The Community Centre is a charity that is really struggling at the moment, their main income being from the five times a year they are allowed to accept camping on site, so it was agreed that the Tombola money collected would be donated to the charity, as they had made us so welcome. Finally, we appreciate the good relations that we have with Anglia Group and thank them for allowing us to “use their patch”, and it was nice to see so many of their members join us.
Upcoming rallies: 1-6 September: Camper UK Leisure Park, Newark, NG23 7EE, 2pm start. 17-22 September: Kings Bromley Showground, Burton-On-Trent, DE13 7JF, 12pm start. 22-25 September: MCG AGM, Ukrainian Centre, Derby, DE72 2BU, 12pm start.
On our last full day for exploring, some went to visit the highest tower at Rye Church, to view the surrounding countryside, whilst others walked to Camber sands or found local hostelries to enjoy local beers.

5-7 August: Enniskillen Rally in Model Primary School: This is my first rally, and I can honestly say it was fantastic from beginning to end. On arrival, I was met by the hosts for the weekend William and Adeline McClenaghan and co-hosts Lesley and Paul Rixon. They took my details, gave me a leaflet with lots of information on what I would need to know for the rally. It included useful telephone numbers, the programme for the days ahead and covered every eventuality. After being directed to my spot for the weekend which had a great view, I put the kettle on and got settled. Reading through the leaflet for the upcoming events, I noticed there was quiz which had to be submitted by 5:30pm on Saturday. There were 57 motorhomes in total and there was plenty >> of room for everyone. I particularly enjoyed the auction raffle on the Friday night that was held in the hall and the money raised went to Chairman’s charity. The pamper session on the Saturday morning was put on by Adeline, was really nice to experience as it was just something that I wasn’t expecting. The second evening was great with another raffle and live music by Paul Ralph. Coffee morning on the Sunday was very well attended and we laughed a lot especially finding out there was a map in the entrance hall with some of the answers to the quiz. The hosts were fantastic at making me feel welcome and part of the group, it was really easy to make new friends and I really look forward to the next meet up. I sincerely urge anyone who has yet to join us at the Rallies to just do it! Thank you so much and see you all soon. Alison Masters NWM&NW Porthmadog rally at the Football Club was blessed with the heat wave weather. We had the hottest days with glorious sunshine. At times it was too hot to move very far, but the surrounding scenery was wonderful. Occasionally a cooling breeze wafted across the field. Some went into town to the various pubs and cafes or to fetch supplies from the supermarkets. Margaret and Keith went exploring Italian gardens and buildings at Portmerion whilst others took advantage of the different train journeys to Ffestiniog, Caernarfon or Beddgelert. One small group set off by bus to Harlech but found Barmouth more interesting. Black Rock Sands was another popular venue as it’s possible to park on the beach and then cool off in the sea. The cooler evenings were spent sitting outside in the field in groups of varying sizes enjoying meals, drinks or just chatting till quite late. A big thank you to the group who saved many awnings when a freak gust of wind swept across the field lifting many awnings high in the air. Another thank you to Ken and Ineke Green for volunteering to bookin and park-up all 27 vans during the rally. We had visitors from Severn Valley, South and West Wales, Yorkshire and East Midlands. Thank you, Peter and Jean McConnell, for the banking trip to Pwlheli. After five days at Porthmadog most moved on to Bala Rugby Club. Here the weather was completely different with wind, drizzle and rain. Geoff and Brenda Balshaw did a splendid job parking everyone. There were 30 vans with visitors from Severn Valley, Lancashire and Yorkshire. Extensive work on flood defences is taking place to strengthen the embankment along the lake preventing walks by the lake temporarily. In town there were plenty of places to eat and drink with many favouring the chip shop. In the evening we had the use of a marquee for bingo when some of the visitors won the money, we just hope they visit us again and bring it back. On Saturday, in spite of the wind and rain rocking the marquee for the quiz night Peter Hancock won the jelly babies. As the weather was so unpredictable, we moved into the club house for Sunday’s sausage sizzle and cider served with Peter Walley’s special fried onions. There was plenty for everyone - Some having
On Thursday from 1pm, 14 vans arrived in preparation for Mahon’s Tea Dance laid on free by Joe Mahon. The new venue at the Creamery had good hard standing and was close to town. A full programme of events meant that there was lots to choose from. David Davidson won the best dressed man. Robert Coalter’s nephew, Darryl Abraham won the hole digging competition. And if you don’t think this would be any fun, think again because the craic was mighty. Music on the street and in the bars kept our feet tapping. Three of our members entered their cars into the vehicle parade, Raymond Elliott, Herbie Stevenson and Robert Coalter. The truck parade was awesome, the sound of their horns still ringing in some ears. Friday saw the arrival of more vans and two new members were signed up on site bringing the total to 28 vans for the weekend. A welcome was also extended to Danny and Kathy Galvin who had come to their first rally/meet. Nice to see Fred and June Spratt out again since all the lockdowns and Covid. Also returning Derek and Rosie Fry after a family bereavement. Saturday evening, after another fun filled day, an impromptu invitation from the hosts to gather around their motorhome, as the weather continued to be favourable, proved popular with those who had remained on-site. Mary Marks and Herbie Stevenson delighted us with a few songs whilst Andy and Raymond supplied music. A sing-song proved that remembering words to camp fire songs would require a song book. Another task for the secretary to work on? Sunday, we said our farewells to a great bunch of people. Due to the event, having to be a week earlier than normal, to coincide with the lady of the lake festival, our next rally in Enniskillen will not be for three weeks. I am really looking forward to once again meeting with members and hope those who have not returned yet, due to varying circumstances will come and join us. Stay safe.

Finally Severn Valleys 60th Birthday Bash which was held at a new venue for the club, Alveley Sports and Social Club, about five miles from Bridgnorth. This rally was hosted by the committee with lots of help from Severn Valley members. I would like to name you all but won’t in case I miss someone off, you all know who you are. Without all your help, this rally wouldn’t have taken place so the committee would like to thank you all for helping to organise such a successful event.

SEVERN VALLEY Hello everyone. In this issue, there are three rallies to report on: Upton Blues Festival hosted by Kirstie, Richard, Amanda and Chris welcomed 30 vans to the three-night rally at the YMCA (one East Midlands, three S&W Wales, five Avon, 18 Severn Valley, one Essex, one Chiltern and one NW Mids and NW). There was glorious sunshine, great music, happy campers (hopefully) and a wonderful atmosphere that makes Upton Blues such a unique free event. Around the main stage there were beer tents and stalls where you could just sit and listen to the bands performing or just wander round the local pubs taking in all the different styles of music and maybe have a few beers along the way. Saturday and Sunday saw a Battle of Britain memorial flight over the big top stage, a spitfire and a Lancaster Bomber, many of the local residents came to join us on the rally field to witness the magnificent planes returning from an air show. It was so warm we didn’t have a coffee morning or raffle. The end of July saw the return of Welland Steam Fair after a two-year break. 112 vans attended this rally which was hosted by Jeremy, Sandy, Stewart, Shelia, Mick and Janet. Over the weekend, 20,000 people were in attendance. It was very busy. Set in the shadow of The Malvern Hills, Welland offered a fun packed weekend celebrating the golden era of steam. There was something for all ages. There were steam engines, vintage vehicles, tractor pulling, motorcycles plus many more different types of vintage transportation vehicles. Richard one of Severn Valley members even got to drive a steam engine in the playpen, where earlier in the day the grass had caught fire, due to the dry conditions, but was soon put out by the vintage fire engines which were parked nearby. Friday the first day of the fair was warm and sunny with many members wondering round the craft and farmers market tents, taking in all the various displays the rally had to offer. Saturday evening, the UK’s number one ABBA tribute act Abbalicious performed on the main stage by the old-time fun fair. Unfortunately, the rain came which saw many heading back to the vans cold and wet. The evening firework display went ahead, by then the rain had stopped, the fireworks seemed to go on forever it was a great steam rally with lots to see and do and plenty of walking, going home for a rest now. Sunday morning the usual coffee morning and raffle took place by the hosts vans .

we filled the restaurant, we are all now on their Facebook page. The food was amazing so much so some went back the following evening. The one-man-band kicked off the Birthday Bash celebrations with plenty of audience participation and some great music. Friday afternoon there was a 40s themed tea party held in the marquees. Many dressed up in 1940s fancy dress, while some wore red, white and blue for the occasion. There was plenty of sandwiches and lots of different cakes all made and donated by family, friends and Severn Valley members. A big thank you to you all. The cakes were delicious, well there was none left so they must have been!
Friday evening, we were entertained by the brilliant ‘Them Two’ who got everyone up dancing. During the interval, Les Kendrick from COMS presented Severn Valley chairman Tony and founder members of the Club Jenny Barlow and Derek Lawton with a plaque celebrating Severn Valleys 60th year.
GROUP NEWS
The first was at Higher Harlyn (1-4 July) hosted by Shirley Lulham, who welcomed 17 vans (15 SWP, one West Country and one East Midlands), plus a visit from ex MCC members Christine and John Howard, who are now ‘site residents’ in their static caravan and were able to help with handy local knowledge. Shirley reported that everyone arrived on Friday afternoon to a sunny but breezy site. There was a Meet and Greet gathering in the evening which gave everyone a chance to catch up with friends, old and new. On Saturday most people managed to go off walking or cycling to explore the local area – and a few caught the bus into Padstow and Newquay. In the evening they gathered in the shelter for ‘Are you smarter than a ten-year-old?’. The winners of each round were able to choose a snack from the ‘Tuck Shop’, so a few calories were gained during the evening. The overall winners were team ‘Club Members’ (Alan Richards and Brian George), who obviously excelled as ten-year-olds! The Sunday night’s gathering was hosted by Sandy and Ian Swain, who are always good company, although Ian’s promised Pole Dancing demonstration was cancelled leaving several members disappointed. The second rally was hosted by Sally and Ian Lewis at Stithian’s Lakes (15-18 July). Ten SWP vans spent a hot sunbaked few days either on cycle rides, strolling around the lakes or being entertained by the various water activities. On Friday afternoon there was Pimms in the Shelter, a welcome refreshing summer cocktail plus a chance to catch up with everyone and extend an invitation to Alan and Catherine, who happened across our rally and gladly took up the offer of a taster with our Group. Saturday afternoon was time for ‘Ian’s Famous Sausage Sizzle’, locally purchased cracked black pepper variety, served in a brioche roll and fried red onions cooked by fellow rallier Les Hunkin, all thoroughly enjoyed until the last morsels! Nearly everyone departed during Sunday, thanking Sally Ian for being great hosts and wishing them well with their move the following Tuesday to their new home.
There were four first timers and one first time with Severn Valley. Sunday coffee morning prizes were given for the lucky van and the raffle was drawn, each van went home with a plaque to mark this 60th birthday occasion, hope you all enjoyed the weekend and had a safe journey home.
Upcoming rallies: 30 September-2 October: Avonbank Meadow Pershore. This is a bookable rally limited to 37 vans. 20-23 October: Riverside Bridgnorth. At this present time, we have no hosts for either of these rallies. If you are interested in hosting, contact Chris Windmill (Rally Officer). Details are in the magazine. No hosts, no rally.
Upcoming rallies: 16-19 September: Bossiney, Tintagel, PL34 0AY, £10 pupn, no EHU, booking start 16 August, limited to 25 spaces. 13-17 October: Trevarrian Holiday Park, TR8 4AQ, bookings start 13th September, £16 pupn incl. EHU. AGM Friday 14: At 8pm. Fox and Hounds, EX20 4HF. 18-20 November: £15 pupn, no EHU, £20 pupn with EHU, Christmas Shopping rally, plus use of skittle alley. Bookings start 18 October.
In total, 81 vans attended the rally 11 from Southwest Wales, two from West Wessex, three from Lancashire, five from Avon, one from Anglia, one from East Wessex, one from Sussex, six from North-West Midlands and North Wales, two from East Midlands and 49 from Severn Valley.
On the Saturday, a group of members were taken on a guided walk by local residents Jo and John Robinson, we walked around Alveley and the Severn Valley country park ending up at The Three Horseshoes pub for a much-needed drink. Some members went on the bus into Bridgnorth, don’t think the local bus service had seen so many people and dogs before. On the Saturday evening there was a pig roast which was delayed setting up due to an accident close to the club house, but it was worth the wait. Party night was 1960s fancy dress with live entertainment from ‘Ruby and the Romantics’. Les Kendrick judged the fancy dress with a bottle of wine and box of chocolates given out to the winner.

On the Thursday night we all got together to enjoy a Jambalaya made by Carole to compliment the (non) Soul evening! Needless to say, the alcohol flowed and we all mingled and got to know those who we didn’t know.
A terrific evening allowed by the fabulous weather which continued on until we cleared the field on Tuesday. The whole weekend was cloudless (apart from about two minutes of large droplets) which meant we took to the buses, walked to the pub, walked around the area or just stayed by the ‘vans to eat, drink and be very chatty or quiet depending on the mood!! It was so good to see folks from all over, including Chiltern, Essex, Kent and Seven Valley. Oakside Farm what a find Marilyn, and what a weekend.
One morning we had a CARPET of geese outside the vans. Some of us took the walk up to the weir and lock, fascinating to watch and rest for an hour or so. It was a long walk to the bus stop, but some managed it to get the bus into Henley - not least our Essex members who had dressed top-to-toe for the occasion and finished the day with a joint meal in the evening. Terrific fun. Weather was superb, and the necessary storm at the weekend produced an amazing rainbow which didn’t seem to touch earth! Marilyn and Dave hosted a drinks get together, not tea and coffee!!! All in all, a great weekend. At Esher we had a great turn out for what promised to be a VERY warm weekend. We arrived to a field that looked as if we were in the middle of Spain - brown parched grass everywhere. The actual Rugby field benefited from a bore hole near the club house, but the one near our end was completely dry! Hence, we were all on a keep fit march to get the water! Unfortunately, due to a change in the admin team, the Soul weekend had changed from the one planned to another date in August!! However, we all stayed on to enjoy the weather and good company.
Upcoming rallies: 9-11 September: Newton Farm, Angle, Pembs, SA71 5AG, starts 2pm. 23-25 September: Pembrey Country Park, SA16 0EJ, 15th Annual Steam Rally set in coastal country park, starts 2pm. 7-10 October: Hi Tide Inn Sandy Bay, Porthcawl, CF36 5PW. New venue. Book with Keith Howard (see below) for electric hookup. £18 per night with electric or £14 without. Entertainment and meals available at the Hi-Tide; site next to the beach with easy short walk to town starts 2pm. 9-11 December: Christmas Party at Baskerville Hall. Now full but book for reserve list now with Keith Howard our rally officer 07791 524227. SUSSEX SRB Moorings is a fabulous spot for watching the boats going up and down toward Henley for the Regatta weekend. Amazing to see so many early ‘sailors’ in their dickey bows and posh frocks bbq’ing and popping the champers, even at 10am! We all had a terrific view of the river and the activities, including early morning swimmers and thousands (well it seemed like thousands) of geese, swans and ducks.
Goldilocks (who’s bed are you sleeping in?) made an appearance least said about that the better! Peter, the owner of Oakside provided a great hours entertainment firing up and taking off in his ‘plane. Mick gave a few of us a minor heart tremor when he climbed on the ‘van roof and couldn’t get down! Well done John and Gordon for your assistance getting him through the sky light! The many gliders overhead were a distraction for many of us whilst enjoying alcoholic beverages and some even ventured by bus to Lewes and by car to Raystede along the road.

GROUP NEWS and Kath Mepham with first time hosts Reg and Gill who welcomed 19 vans including the four Severn Valley visitors. Here the skittles were won by Kirsty with Tom and Eleri winning the quiz. The meet concluded with Kath making delicious scones for everyone at the coffee morning to end a successful rally.
28 July-1 August: Caerphilly, Ysgol Cymraeg Caerffilli: The hosts were Betty and Glyn with Sandra and John who welcomed 16 vans to this new venue. It should have been the ‘Big Cheese’ weekend but this was cancelled due to current work on Caerphilly Castle, but this did not stop everyone having a good time. On Friday evening the quiz saw Jane, Sue and Keith winning. However, the heavy rain saw the planned cheese and wine for Saturday evening being ‘amended’. The determined hosts donned their raincoats and umbrellas to deliver the cheese and wine to each van; well done to the four of them proving that we Welsh do not let the rain get us down! The rain held off for the Sunday morning coffee morning; some left afterwards with others staying on until Monday. This will be the venue of our AGM 3-5 November which will coincide with the magnificent Fireworks Display at Caerphilly Castle. There will be a meal with live entertainment on Friday with the AGM and Fireworks on Saturday. Bookable for catering with Betty.
Jan and Chris carried on a terrific hosting weekend with a well attended quiz (the winners were only by one point) and even provided a fish and chip evening. Their car was a great bonus to collect fish and chips for 17 ‘vans! All of us had different orders and they managed to get it 99.9% right. Thank you so much Jan and Chris for such a well organised few days. It just goes to show -hosting a rally can be as much or as little as you’d like it to be. And we all enjoy just being together anyway and a big thanks for whoever organised a dry, sunny weekend (again) for us.
Jan and Chris got us all together on Thursday with hot dogs and onions with the ‘mandatory’ relishes. What a terrific start to a terrific weekend.

My thanks to Mike Toogood for the following report on the holiday TCS at Lady Mile. We probably picked the best week of the year, as far as the weather was concerned. 23 vans attended, including 13 from West Wessex. Others had travelled from Yorkshire, Lancashire and Wales. The rally was allocated the Copse field, and although it was quite a walk to the main facilities, most members agreed it was nice to have a separate location. In the woods behind the rally field there was a buzzards’ nest with chicks in. It was interesting to hear the chicks crying for food and watch the parents bringing in their dinner, often harassed by seagulls hoping to steal free meals. The two chicks finally fledged on the Saturday morning that we were leaving. Wednesday afternoon we all enjoyed a cream tea, with both Cornish and Devon scones available. The Pitcherwits quiz was won by Steve and Sue, who managed to get all of the correct answers. Friday afternoon we enjoyed Pimms and a buffet followed by the final of the horseshoe competition. This was very popular, with most people taking part or supporting their friends. It was finally won by Shirley and Steve who defeated Kevin and Roger from West Sussex. Many thanks to Bett and Mike for supplying the horseshoe equipment. Everyone seemed to enjoy the week and our thanks go to our joint hosts, Judy and Roy Clark.
On Sunday the traditional coffee and raffle was held and everyone departed for home. The Rally was hosted by Chas and Jayne and Ian and Annette, and a big thank you for their hard work.
29 September-2 October: Marsh Farm, Hilperton, BA14 7AJ, £10 per night. This is another new venue for us. Walk along the canal or stroll to the local garden centre for some lunch in their cafe! Book with Sue and Chum on 07939 002176. 25-30 October: The Annual General Meeting will be held at Royal Wootton Basset Academy and is bookable with Dawn and Ali on 07889 998080. There is a £1 per person rally fee at each TCS. Please put the correct site and rally fee in an envelope with your details on the front. This makes booking in, when arriving, much quicker for you. All rallies start and finish at 12 noon and arrivals after 9am on subsequent days. We hope to see you soon.
Upcoming TCs: 12-16 September: St. Cross CC, Winchester, SO23 9RX, £12 per night. This is our first time at this popular venue. The footpath at the bottom of the field follows the river into town. Buses stop outside the main gate. The clubhouse and it’s decked outside area are available to us throughout the meet. Please phone or text your details to Maria on 07887 393137 to book.

Some members took advantage of the free bus at the entrance to the camp site that went to Minehead and enjoyed what the town had to offer. There was also the Exmoor coaster which is an open top bus going all the way to Lynmouth and also the steam train to Minehead. On Sunday morning they had a coffee morning and raffle to end the weekend. A big thank you to the hosts, Jim and Jenny, Ian and Angela for a fabulous rally. On 12-17 July, a very successful rally was held at the Barnstaple Boca football club with a total of 41 vans attending. From the West Country, SWP Chiltern, Severn Valley, Sussex, and West Wessex. A lovely group of people all took the opportunity to relax, chat and shop in the nearby towns etc. The weather was definitely with us during the five days. On the Thursday afternoon Ann Russell (WC) offered to put on a belly dancing class, which was well attended and enjoyed by all. Photos can be seen on the WC Facebook page. On Thursday evening we held a fish and chip supper, lovely food from one of the local chip shops. On Saturday saw the return of the Green Man festival in Barnstaple which many attendees visited as it was a short walk from the site. There was also a beer festival including the Green Man ale was well attended by the pub fraternity, and we understand that the Green Man beer was really green!

Much to see and do While water draws in the visitors, the rolling Cumbrian countryside, with its picturesque Pennine peaks and valleys, is the icing on the cake.
Cumbria is far more than just the lakes and, if truth be told, there are some areas around Windermere and Bowness that are simply not suitable for motorhomes and campervans. So full-marks to Cumbria and the Lake District for taking the issue so seriously and making the area so accessible to those of us who like to tour the country in our vans.

Pretty villages, quaint market towns campers and motorhomes with much to see and do. We chose to base ourselves at Long Marton, a quiet village four miles north of Appleby-inWestmorland. It has its own country pub that serves meals, a local bakery and even its own brewery. We were warmly welcomed to Alanholme touring site run by Joanne and Sam Potter. The small, boutique site is three miles from the Pennine Way at Dufton and only a slight detour off the National Cycle Route 68. It is also on the walking route of Lady Anne’s Way; a 100-mile hiking route between Skipton and Penrith. The trail is punctuated by houses and towers once owned by the Clifford family, but is named after Lady Anne Clifford who renovated and repaired the buildings in the 17th century.
The campsite, set in blissful countryside, is pint sized when compared to some, and is what we might describe as a hidden gem, providing a mixture of pitches from hardstanding with electrical hook up, to grass only. The site is well run and is crammed full of ‘do’s’ with very few ‘don’ts’. Come here to chill, or as we did, pack in lots of activities and adventures. You can, for example, ride sections of the Carlisle to Settle railway. The line passes through the village and whilst the station closed >>

in 1970, you can still hop on the train in nearby Appleby and enjoy sections of what has been described as one of the world’s greatest rail journeys, carving its way through the magnificent landscape of Cumbria’s lush green Eden Valley, with its views of the Pennines and Lakeland Fells. We chose to ride our bikes to the village of Dufton before walking sections of the Pennine Way. A hike up to High Cup Nick was rewarding, and eating our picnic on the top of the ridge, some 1,500 feet above sea level, was delightful. Get your timing right and you could be back to Dufton in time for a cream tea at the Postbox Pantry, where all the cakes are hand made by the ladies who run the shop. Keswick In Keswick we parked beside Derwentwater, in Lakeside car park close by The Theatre on the Lake. Clearly demonstrating Cumbria’s pleasing attitude towards motorcaravans, the space has no height restrictions and even allows vans to stay overnight for £1. Add to that direct access to the lake, enjoyable Crow Park, and on-site toilets, this makes it a budget campervan heaven! From the car park it is a short walk through Hope Park into the centre of town with its shops and visitor attractions. We decided to visit the Keswick Derwent pencil museum. Whoever knew pencil making could be so fascinating as to have its own museum. But this is well worth the cost of entry. Everyone who pays to enter gets a unique pencil and a quiz sheet handed to them. It is a great way to make the most of what the museum has on display and the story it seeks to tell. The stone circle at Castlerigg, described by archaeologist John Waterhouse as one of the most visually impressive prehistoric monuments in Britain, was one of the first scheduled ancient monuments to be taken into the care of the National Trust and as such, occupies a small place in the history of archaeological conservation. It is a delightfully peaceful and atmospheric spot made especially so, at the time of our visit, by the presence of two permanent van lifers, who were singing folk songs and playing musical instruments to entertain nobody except themselves.

Ullswater With Windermere best avoided by larger vehicles, a safer bet is the area surrounding Ullswater, the Lake District’s second largest lake. It is a wonderful stretch of water on which Donald Campbell made history launching his boat; Bluebird and achieved the water speed record of 202 mph in 1955. At a more modest speed, we sailed the lake on board one of five Ullswater Steamers. The company operates year-round with sailings on heritage steamers. The oldest of their fleet, Lady of the Lake, launched in 1877 some 34 years before Titanic slipped into the water in Belfast in 1911. A flock of foodie businesses have established themselves here, drawn by the lush landscape and mild climate that helps to raise and graze some of Cumbria’s famous local produce. Kendal The market town of Kendal is quite quaint and well worth a visit if only for the outdoor shops, the castle, and the wonderful Quaker tapestry Museum. The town has narrow, winding streets and a one-way system which loops around the town. We suggest parking at the Snowsports Club car park or the Kendal Cricket Club on Shap Road and taking the short walk into town. Be warned however, that while the cricket club charges just £2 a day to park a car, the charge for a motorhome is five times that! Take a short walk up to Kendal Castle or browse the market and the many independent shops. Or grab a coffee at one of the many cafes the likes of Method, About Time, Bakery at No. 4, and Farrer’s. They are all great and locally owned. For us however, the highlight of the town is the Quaker Tapestry Museum. Here, 350 years of social history and Quaker stories are brought to life in more than 40 vibrant embroidered panels, housed within an architecturally stunning and original Georgian Meeting House. This fascinating museum takes you on a journey through the Quaker influence on the modern world, exploring the Industrial Revolution, developments in science and medicine, the abolition of slavery, social reform, astronomy, and ecology. Delight in the detail of the beautiful needlework and the craftsmanship involved in its creation. Made by over 4,000 men, women, and children from 15

The promenade at Grange-over-Sands countries, over 15 years, it’s a calm, serene and emotive experience for all.
The Edwardian seaside town of Grange-Over-Sands is one of the landmark towns featured in the Cumbrian Coastal Route 200 (See panel left). We loved walking along the extensive promenade admiring the Ornamental Gardens while spotting the wooden sculptures. In its heyday this must have been a very gracious resort, and for many Village Shop, known as the ‘home of sticky toffee pudding’. Nearby lies Holker Hall and Gardens. Whether you’re a garden enthusiast or don’t know your dahlias from your daisies, everyone can appreciate the beauty of these gardens. Discover hidden fountains inhabited by ducks, labyrinths and lost follies. Holker also boasts a fantastic food hall called A Day’s Walk. Run by its founders, Colin and Emma Sneath, it is so called because it sells only food stuffs that are produced within a day’s walk of the shop. Specialities include West Mooreland Pepper Cake, Damson Ketchup and home-made Scotch Eggs wrapped in Cumberland sausage and rolled in oats. If you want Colin to deliver to your campervan when you are in the area, order on line 2 days before you arrive and say where you will be parked. Ten years ago it was rare to see a motorhome with a bike rack on the back. Now it is rare to find a van without one. Twenty years ago, electric bicycles were as rare as hens’ to one on a daily basis. As we get older riding a bike can become more of a challenge. Unfortunately this causes many people to stop riding altogether. But because electric bikes take away the added effort required of a regular push bike and make keeping up with family and friends a breeze, they have become popular amongst older riders. Little wonder that specialists, the likes of Energise E Bikes (with shops in Kent and Surrey), are reporting increased interest from motorhome and campervan owners. Tony Wade, the store manager in their Coulsdon branch, says the split is interesting,

September 2022 MOTOR CARAVANNER 57 folding bikes to put inside their vans and others wanting lightweight bikes they can lift on to the racks at the back of the van. Rear mounted racks are more often found on motorhomes than campervans, where they interfere with the opening and closing of van style barn doors. But help is at hand for those folk too. In Holland, Busbiker have designed and manufactured a clever and very sturdy swing away arm that has its own integrated bike holder. Sadly, it is too expensive for our budget, especially given that to get one fitted you would have to drive your camper over to France, Belgium or Holland because there is not yet a British based agent. Swing away arms with a tow bar fitting, on which you can mount a bike rack, are available from RoadPro who sell the Dutch-made Van Swing and UK

September 2022 MOTOR CARAVANNER 59 gave this lightweight bike complete foldability. Richard Thorpe, a former design engineer with McLaren Cars, began creating compact electric fold-up bicycles more than a decade ago and with the company’s new G4, he has created the ultimate in personal commuter transport. On the road the G4 performs like many other electric bicycles. The 20-inch wheels are somewhat smaller than a traditional road bike but that does not seem to detract from its performance. It has a 500W motor and a top speed, which by law in Europe is capped at 15.5MPH. But with our camping adventures increasingly seeing us take Voyager off-road we began to see the limitations of the small wheel and smooth tyre. What we sought was a machine with the same characteristics but with the added ability to handle the rough terrain a canal towpath has to offer. Our search for a folding bike met with failure so we were forced to bite the bullet and fit a tow bar and purchase a Thule bike carrier. That meant that we had to find a bike that was light enough to lift on to it. Our solution lay with the Turbo Como Super Light 5.0 from Specialized bikes in America, who design their bikes in SwitzerlandThislow-maintenance, belt driven machine, comes equipped with everything we need for spontaneous campervan fun. We can lift it easily onto the carrier, zip across town, pack it full of groceries, and it’s still ready to take to the gravel tracks OUT & ABOUT | CYCLING E-bike from Specialized bike >> 023 8001 0029 Badminston Lane, Fawley, SouthamptonSO451BX Motorhome servicing & MOTs Servicing & Repairs Tyres & Wheels Air Conditioning Diagnostics Courtesy Cars Collection & Delivery

Despite the added assistance, e-bikes still improve riders’ general fitness as the assistance is primarily used for uphill or particularly lengthy journeys. However the beauty of an e-bike is that you can select your assistance based on your capabilities or the terrain you are faced with, and it’s completely adjustable as your journey goes on which makes them perfect for every age and ability.

Depending on the time of year you visit, you may even spot the skylark, a rare, Red List species of bird with a beautiful song.
