An update from Dr Dan Poulter

Summer is without a doubt my favourite season, not least of all because it means that I can spend more time at my home in Suffolk and enjoying all that we love about this great county. From the swathes of farmland, open skies and vibrant market towns to the local produce markets, village fetes and independent retailers, I particularly relish the opportunity to get out and about meeting so many of you and supporting our local businesses, community events and local food producers. So much work goes into the many school and community fetes that take place through the summer months, with community volunteers working tirelessly behind the scenes to bring everything to fruition. Thank you for all that you do to make our villages and communities so special.

Maxine Smith (Qualified RN,S.A.C.Dip RFHP) 07555 708597

For those moving up to secondary school, although daunting, this marks an exciting new chapter with greater independence and a whole raft of new activities and subjects to study, alongside existing friends and perhaps some new faces too.

Following the triumphant return of Pantomime to the splendid Leiston Film Theatre earlier this year, Team B Productions bring you a forest full of fun with their fabulous family adventure, Robin Hood, appearing live at the Leiston Film Theatre from the 13th to the 15th of January 2023, with demand for tickets so high, that seats for some performances are already limited.

Annette Johnson, with the help of her friends in the bingo club, organised a very successful jumble sale in the Day Centre in aid of Halesworth Christmas Lights. Annette would like to thank everyone who helped in any way – the local businesses who donated raffle prizes, those who made cakes and of course those who attended and supported the event. At the end of the morning a magnificent £472.84 had been raised which is a tribute to all the hard work put in by Annette and her team. They are hoping to boost this at their next bingo night to get the total up £500. HEM would like to thank Annette and her team for their hard work and

We are hoping to be able to find somewhere to place a bench in or near the central car park, so our passengers do not have to spend a long time on their feet waiting for the bus. We will be speaking to local Councillors to see if they can help us with this as many people have expressed a desire to have somewhere to sit while waiting for the Hoppa to arrive.

After the scheduled programme, the two singers were called back for an encore by the appreciative audience.

Finally, we're very pleased to welcome back Shirley Woolterton who was a Bus Buddy on the Day Centre bus for many years before taking a break. Bus buddies help with loading heavy shopping onto the bus, and even taking it to people's doors when we get them home. It's a service that is much appreciated and something we couldn't offer without our fantastic buddies.

There are always bargains to be had at our jumble sales so please come and have a browse.

We will be serving tea/coffee and cakes when you need a sit down and a rest. We are very grateful for donations so please call me to arrange collection of items you may have. Unfortunately, we cannot take electrical items or large items of furniture etc. As always please don't leave jumble items outside the village hall as we only hire the hall on the day so are unaware of things left there.

The committee is delighted to welcome Sophia France, Cancer Research's new Relationship Manager for Norfolk and Suffolk.

The stalls will include books, bric-a-brac, cakes, raffle, etc we are also hoping to have a few craft stalls. The Cancer Research Christmas Cards will be on sale and the very limited-edition pin badges. Please come and support our charity night and ladies bring the menfolk along too.

To all our valued supporters, please continue to come to our events. I know times are very difficult now but without you all, we cannot do the vital work of defeating cancer.

Thank you everyone.

After Halesworth's soprano Alice Howell's successful recital at Halesworth's St Mary's Church in July, both she and her partner Alexander White held an 'Afternoon at the Opera' in St. Andrew's Church, Trowse on Saturday 20th August.

One member of the audience (who is a life-long opera lover and has attended concerts at Covent Garden, the home of opera) stated that Alice and Alex were: "up there with the best of them".

The Hoppa will continue to run services around Halesworth and Holton with regular visits to the Co-op, town centre car park, the Surgery and Holton bus stop, travelling via Dukes Drive, Bedingfield, Lansbury Road, Old Station Road, Harrisons Lane, Holton Road and other stops at the request of our passengers.

After our summer break, we are back with two events in October.

Firstly, a huge thank you to everyone who supported the fun-filled Woodbridge Historic Riverside Festival over the August Bank Holiday weekend. Here at the The Longshed, as part of the festival, we hosted a sell-out 'Sea Shanties' supper evening, featuring the "Rum Old Boys" who put heart and soul into ensuring we had a great evening, telling us about the origins of the shanties and ensuring we joined in the choruses with gusto! Many thanks to the Rum Old Boys, to the team of helpers who produced an excellent supper, and to all the other helpers behind the scenes who made the evening possible.
