We have been working really hard at Charsfield Primary School and the children and staff New improvements at Charsfield Primary School are very excited about the new improvements we have been making to the school. Firstly, the children are loving the revamped library and it's delightful to hear squeals of joy as the children change their books. Pupils have volunteered to be librarians and are taking their roles very seriously! In addition to this, the school introduced a 'Reading Challenge' across the school where pupils achieve certificates for reading a certain number of times. Some pupils have exceeded 230 reads since January! As a school we love reading, and once a week the whole school has a "share a story, share a biscuit" session where pupils take turns to share a story with the rest of the school, this is brilliant for pupils to gain confidence in public speaking and a lovely way to end the school week. Next is our lovely Forest Schools area. The children take part in these weekly sessions as part of our wellbeing programme. They love being outdoors with nature, making and building things and the mud kitchen is a big hit too! To further develop our mental health and wellbeing programme we have spruced up our outdoor reflection area; this is a quiet space where children can go at break and lunchtimes to colour, read or sit quietly with friends. We have also added a weekly audio book for the children to listen to a story if they'd like to. This area is proving to very popular and has been a roaring success. To celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee in June, we made some scarecrow pupils enjoying a tea party in front of the school! They looked so realistic that we had members of the community comment on them thinking we had some new pupils! Our summer performance of Wind in the Willows has been a great success. The children played their parts beautifully and the singing was first class. Comments from the children include: "This is my best night ever!" and "This is the highlight of my year!". The audience were bopping in their seats and laughing at all of the jokes. We have been delighted to welcome our new pupils starting with us in September for some transition mornings in July, and they were really excited to explore the updated Early Years outdoor space.Ifyou'd like to see what our wonderful school can offer your family, please join us for one of our open mornings on Tuesday 27th September, Wednesday 12th October or Monday 21st November. We'd be delighted to show you around. Please take a look at our website information.school.org.ukwww.charsfieldprimaryforup-to-date

Do you love the Green - the paths, the wildlife, the cows? How about taking on a four-year stint as a TheTrustee?Trust is entering an exciting and challenging period. Locally, new housing is bringing new volunteers and increasing use of the Green. Globally, climate change is affecting habitats for wildlife. As a Trustee of the Charity, you would help to plan how to embrace these and other changes while achieving the Trust’s aims and ensuring that the Charity is managed effectively.Halesworth Millennium Green was established to contribute to the life of the community by being accessible to locals and visitors alike, also to make a positive contribution to the local environment. This means that the Trustees’ task is to balance the needs of people with those of wildlife, both by hands-on management and by long-term planning.Asa Trustee you would focus on long-term planning. All Trustees are volunteers, the Trust has no paid positions. Trustees serve for an initial period of four years. We’re looking for people to help specifically with administration, money management, events, and outreach. Contact thegreen@ halesworth.net for more information and details of how to apply.Meanwhile, we hope you’re appreciating the smart and useful dog poo-bag dispensers which have appeared. Halesworth dog walkers are an exceptionally responsible bunch, because compared with the number of dogs who enjoy the Green there is very little poo left lying about. However, there is always some, despite the four bins in different places on the Green. Now help is at hand: Steve Holman and the Halesworth Fairies have supplied dispensers at all four locations, and their volunteers will keep the dispensers topped-up. So, if you forget your own bags look out for the dispensers, near the four bins. Huge thanks to Steve and theVolunteersFairies. meet down on the Green every Wednesday morning at 9:30am at the containers (industrial estate entrance, near the rail and river bridges at Three Ways). Tools provided, bring a drink and nibble. The website events,carriesmillenniumgreen.halesworth.netwww.newsofpastandfuturephotos,wildliferecords, Love the Green? It is amazing to think that there have now been two major consultations about the Plan, one organised by the Halesworth Town Council and one by East Suffolk Council. The East Suffolk Council Consultation closed on the 3rd of August and huge thanks to those 15 residents and organisation who madeYourepresentations.canaccessallthe reports, consultations and information that contributed to the writing of the plan on the Halesworth Town Council Website inpeopleanonymisedimportantlyneighbourhood-area/.plans-in-the-area/halesworth-planning/neighbourhood-gov.uk/planning/neighbourhood-group/neighbourhood-plan-steering-halesworthtowncouncil.org.uk/www.oronwww.eastsuffolk.MostyoucanseeallthecommentsthathavemadeaboutourPlanthetworoundsofconsultation.
East Suffolk Council have selected an independent Examiner who will scrutinise our plan. Our plan is not deemed contentious and so we hope it should be a speedy process although the examiner may ask the Steering Group some questions. We will let you know. We hope that our Neighbourhood Plan will then go forward to a referendum perhaps in November/December 2022. We are so close now to having a plan for our Town, which apart from all the good policies and actions will bring more money to be spent locally. Do keep visiting the Halesworth Town Council Website and look out for news on Facebook and via social media. Thanks to you, our Neighbourhood Plan is ever closer to becoming a reality.
So why is our plan important?
Our plan is about identifying the things that were most important for you about our Town. It is about preserving what we like but also looking at ways we can improve and bring new impetus to the Town by encouraging new business, making more of our heritage and bringing visitors to the Town for the benefit of all of us. With your help, we have highlighted six key heritage assets, so that we can protect the buildings that we love and appreciate. The Steering Group identified the Library, the Maltings at Station Yard, the Cross Ram offices and Patrick Stead Hospital, you added the New Reach and the Halesworth to Southwold Narrow Gauge Railway at Millennium Green. Our plan also seeks to attract small businesses, promoting and protecting small scale workspaces that can be rented on flexible terms such as Miles WardLinkedCourt. to that is our commitment to build on the great creative work that happens in Halesworth, so our plan supports the creation of gallery spaces, studio spaces and workshops. Our plan also talks about how new buildings are built. One of key objectives is about design: To maintain and enhance the character and heritage of Halesworth’s built environment whilst encouraging sympathetic contemporary design in new developments. That means that we don’t want new builds where every house looks the same, we want buildings to reflect the character of the town using colours and materials that do not look out of place. Think of the lovely higgledy piggledy nature of houses and buildings on Chediston Street or the Thoroughfare! Our plan is beginning to influence things now Halesworth Town Council are already beginning to act on some of our proposals like improved signage and wayfinding information for visitors and pedestrians. Look out for the notices about a Public Meeting in September to start taking these ideasTheforward.Town Council brought together local organisations to look at ways we can increase facilities and activities aimed at young people. Young people have been consulted over the summer. They are also committing £10,000 to increasing biodiversity and improving open spaces based on consultation with local people about the siting of trees, benches and bird boxes. And picking up on an action point in the plan the town council will later this year consult residents about requirements for a community hub on the land set aside on Dairy Farm. So what happens next?

HMRC generally take the view that a house and grounds come as a package when acquired. If you later increase the garden size or if the garden is not immediately adjacent to the residence, a PPR claim on everything becomes harder – especially if any of the land had been purchased at a different time. That said, the existence of a road between the house and garden is not insurmountable for PPR if the two are genuinely associated. Although land use at point of disposal is important, historical evidence (e.g., photographs) of usage can be vital. Unused and overgrown ground has been accepted as being part of a garden as have areas of woodland, other buildings, riverbanks and occasionally some paddocksalways with a view as to the size, usage and location of the land, and style and presence of the home. With the new 60-day requirement to report and pay any CGT on a disposal of a residential property, if a garden qualifies and later finding out that PPR is restricted will allow HMRC the potential to charge penalties for late declaration and payment of tax. It is better to check rather than assume.Hope this helps Contact Robin Beadle (pictured) for further information at robin.beadle@ensors.co.uk”Disclaimer: “Specialist advice should always be sought prior to taking any action on matters discussed in this article.”
Whilst an Englishman’s Castle is often his Capital Gains Tax (CGT)-free home, it is not always the same for the garden. The garden size (including the footprint of the house) that is automatically exempt under the Principal Private Residence relief (PPR), is restricted to 0.5-hectare (approx. 1.25 acre in English) –and only then if the garden has not had any other (e.g.: agricultural or business) use. Gardens above 0.5ha may need to demonstrate that their size is consummate with the style and nature of the residence and is comparable to similar properties in the locale. For example, a manor house with 3ha of formal gardens may go unqueried, but an end-of- terrace house with a similarly sized garden could have an Ifissue.HMRC can prove that the grounds to a house are “excessive”, beyond that needed for reasonable enjoyment or that you are not using all of the land as a garden (e.g.: some areas are fenced off), they will seek CGT on any gain related to the excess.

Please let me have information and photos as soon as you are able. Our AGM in September will again be an interesting evening. The Chairmans chosen charity this year was The Wickham Market 1st Responders. We are proud to be making a substantial donation to them at the AGM and also possibly having a demonstration and talk about how it all Membersworks.are requested to bring along a plate of snack food for sharing at this meeting, we have never been let down by members with this. Just so you know June has already offered to bring the Twiglets. Thanks June. Geraldine spoke at length about our clubs very urgent need for a Programme Secretary. The job needn't mean being a committee member, but it will mean having regular contact with us either before or at meetings. This can be by e-mail or telephone. The job can be undertaken by two people, and you are assured of all the help needed to take on the position. We have planned demonstrator/speaker bookings already sorted out for 2023 so you won't be thrown in at the deep end. We are such a friendly club. We have a good number of members although always accepting of more, we have a solid bank balance through our Treasurers careful management. However, members were warned that without a Programme Secretary we cannot continue. The club will have to close. Every current committee member has a responsibility already and is not able to take on further duties. Please please do pay heed to this. Do you want our club to continue? Are you, or someone you know able to help us?

June gave the vote of thanks wishing all a safe journey home, a Happy August and looked forward to seeing us all again on Thursday September 22nd at the AGM. 6:30pm for 7pm start. In Wickham Market Village Hall, IP13 0HE.
Please contact either June Allum on 01394 384803, Carol Wiseman on 01394 383666 or Sue Cotton on 07786 942450 to discuss or for more information. The Single stem was awarded to Pearl Crane for a beautiful rose from her garden. The winner of the Novice competition was Jan Richardson and the Advanced winner was Sue Cotton. Well done to you all. Our demonstrator for the evening was introduced. Crystal Dyball with a "Floral Cocktail". The stage was beginning to resemble a smart Cocktail Lounge before Crystal even started to do her arrangements. Several inviting cocktail boards suggesting this was the place to visit for a sumptuous drink. She proceeded to make up her floral designs, each representing a cocktail drink. Using a multitude of beautiful flowers and foliage including Ferns, Fats Hedera, Gladioli, Dahlias, Hydrangeas, Clematis, Spray Roses, Pink
Gerberas and Calla Lilies to name but a few. Her laid-back Norfolk dialect and the stories of the newly built house and managing her garden had us all giggling and enthralled.

East Suffolk Crucial Crew 2022 is now run by local Rotary clubs. In total, there are four main aims of Crucial Crew:
The 78th Aldeburgh 'Comeback' Carnival took place over the weekend of 13th15th August 2022. The very warm and sunny weather brought large crowds for three days of fun by the sea. The first Aldeburgh Carnival since the pandemic followed a similar format to previous events. There were many activities staged over the three days culminating in the crowning of Emily Fryer as the Carnival Queen on Monday with her attendants Ivy Hill, Lilly Atkins, Sophia Hambling and Elizabeth Godbold. The Carnival Parade that followed was well supported with floats with themes ranging from the Lionesses' fantastic football triumph to Willie Wonka's Chocolate Factory! Saturday was music day and musicians played at a variety of inside and outside venues around the town whilst the younger members enjoyed the lollipop hunt and the funfair spread throughout Aldeburgh. A wide range of food was on offer at the pop-up eateries along the high street and seafront with other stalls of all kinds sweltering in the heat.Sports Sunday brought hundreds to compete in the mini marathon 10k race from Aldeburgh, around Thorpeness and back along the beach. The men's and women's races were won by Jamie Signy and Sarah Dudgeon respectively. The winning time was just over 36 minutes, an amazing feat given the hot weather. The backdrop to the race was an incredible display of giant kites on the beach given lift by a steady northerly breeze. This was new for 2022 and proved extremely popular especially with theThroughoutphotographers.theweekend there was a silent auction running with a range of fantastic items donated by some very generous local individuals, traders, and companies. This raises a lot of money that secures the future of the carnival so thanks must go out to the very generous people who donated the prizes and those who won the items. Also, to all those who purchased raffle tickets from one of the volunteers wandering throughout the town all weekend and Monday. Carnival Monday is always the busiest day and started with the sea swimming races in the thankfully calm North Sea followed by an amazing demonstration launch of both the inshore and offshore lifeboats stationed in Aldeburgh and manned by a 'retained' crew. Again, the audience was very generous to both the RNLI and the Carnival who were collecting for their respective causes. Judging of the best 'dressed' house also took place with some residents really going to town to turn their houses into an art installation. Later came the Carnival Procession. After judging at the Moot Hall, the floats processed down the high Street and back led by the Carnival Queen, her attendants, the British Imperial Military Band, and the brilliant Suffolk Samba Band. In the absence of the usual fireworks and lantern parade due to advice from the Suffolk Fire Service, given the dry weather, the music, dancing, and fun continued into the evening along the High Street and seafront. Given that the Carnival has not taken place since 2019 this year's was a great success. The Carnival Committee was delighted by the number of people attending and with the army of volunteers who made the 2022 Aldeburgh Carnival a vintage one. Thanks go out to those who support the Carnival either by attending or volunteering, our main sponsors including Aitch Group, EDF Energy, Fishers, Suffolk Secrets and the Wentworth Hotel and the committed committee members for their unstinting efforts. Here's to a return in August 2023 with the 79th Aldeburgh Carnival!
Monday 17th to Friday 21st October. Crucial Crew is a national scheme aimed at Year 6 pupils (10-11-year-olds). It teaches children how to tackle the personal dangers they may face in life and helps to prevent them from becoming involved in Previouslycrime.administered by East Suffolk Council, the event
1. To encourage responsible action by children, with regard to their own safety and that of others.
The 78th annual Aldeburgh Carnival
2. To sensitise children to emergency/ dangerous situations.
4. To raise awareness of and the consequences of offending behaviour.Thebasis of achieving these aims is learning by practical experience whilst having fun. Topics covered in this year's event include: • Fire safety • Water safety • Electrical safety This year we are returning to the traditional format of face-to-face presentations with the Crucial Crew event being held at The Riverside Centre, Stratford St. Andrew during the week commencing 17th October 2022. We are looking forward to welcoming all Year 6 pupils to theCrucialevent. Crew can cost almost £4,000 to stage, and we are most grateful to Suffolk Community Foundation and Suffolk Resilience Forum for their grants towards the cost of providing this event. Without support from our sponsors, Crucial Crew simply would not take place.

This year we welcome some additional headline chefs to the event whose focus on sustainably produced and exquisite food, and recognition of Suffolk’s formidable food scene sits perfectly with the event. I know that visitors will not be disappointed and look forward to welcoming all in September.” Entry costs £10 per person in advance and can be purchased here, with those under 16 going free. Entry can also be purchased on the day, at £12 per person. All funds go directly towards supporting Suffolk’s food and drink community.

CHARTERED ACCOUNTANTS 5th Floor, Chalfont Square, Old Foundry Rd, Ipswich, Suffolk IP4 2AJ Telephone: (01473) 254400 Congratulations to Gary on 50 years at Fishers Hardware First established by Mr Fisher in 1946 (the year following the end of WWII) Fishers Home Hardware has been a fixture in Saxmundham for more than seven decades! The current owner, Gary Smith, started working here straight from school and took over in 1986 – this year marks Gary’s 50th anniversary at Fishers! The business is well renowned as the ‘local’ hardware shop. There is an old-fashioned approach to customer service and attention to detail. Nothing is too much trouble and the team are on hand to help and make sure you get what you need. The list of what you can find at Fishers is endless so we’ll not run through in great detail the stock that adorns the shelves, stands and shop floor. Suffice to say, just about anything you may need for your DIY project, decorating, garden, along with electrical items, kitchen goods, light bulbs, is all here under one roof. To be sure what you want is in stock you can always phone ahead and reserve it and Gary and his team will keep it to one side for you to collect at a convenient time. Gary explains that working closely with their wholesaler is what enables them to offer such variety and value.
Over the years there has been many changes in town and Fishers is now the last hardware shop left in Saxmundham. That said, it almost counts as two thanks to its unique location between the High Street and Market Place with a shop front and entrance at each side. You don’t run a business in a small town for so long without a sense of humour and an eye for a good marketing opportunity. To that end, Gary found his 15 minutes of fame with a clever poster he displayed that highlighted the fact they sold chains, ropes and cable ties. Perhaps nothing of note… but he ran this campaign following the launch of 50 Shades of Grey, say no more! Of course, over such a long time there will always be highs and lows. There is little doubt that the last couple of years have been tough for all businesses. However, to compound this, Gary suffered a heart attack September 2021 which really forced him to re-assess life. That said he has been overwhelmed by the support and friendship he has had from his customers, and he would like to thank them all. It is this type of care and concern that makes our little towns and communities so special and Saxmundham is no different. Gary would also like to extend his sincere gratitude to all the staff at the local surgery and Norfolk & Norwich Hospital for the excellent treatment and care he received. With his 50th anniversary in mind, Gary would like to invite customers old and new to join him at the shop on Wednesday 7th of September for a celebration day and enjoy a glass of bubbly and nibbles between 10am-4pm. Have a chat, share a joke and make the most of the wonderful community that we are fortunate to be a part of. On the day there will also be stalls for; Royal British Legion, WI, and Saxmundham Adventure Playground, three charities that Fishers have supported over the years. We really do need to embrace and cherish the businesses such as Fishers that are cornerstones of the towns we live in. if you are in Saxmundham please do pop in and have a browse. The shop is open 6-days-a-week 8:30am5pm Monday to Saturday. If you would like to call to check if what you want is in stock or would like any further information on the business please call 01728 602154. Gary Smith welcomes you to Fisher's Home Hardware

The answer is, sadly, that many of them go into the sea as one of Transition Woodbridge’s members found one day in July. We were sailing in the area just off the entrance to the River Orwell, near Harwich and enjoying the warm, sunny weather when we spotted a balloon in the water. We don’t like litter anywhere but litter in the sea is a particularly serious problem so we set about picking it up with the litter picker we carry onboard. It was a Happy 80th Birthday balloon. But that was only the first. The next one was a big blue number three, probably for a little boy’s 3rd birthday. So, we pulled that out too. Over the next two hours we picked up four more balloons, some with long trailing plastic string attached. There were at least three more that we saw but they were carried away by the strong tide before we could get to them. For most of us balloons add a bit of fun to a party or celebration. But what happens to the balloon after the party? When a heliumfilled balloon is released to float up and away it may look lovely but you have no control over where it goes. Eventually it will fall to earth and could land anywhere. Wherever they end up balloons are a problem, nowadays they are made of plastic and will last for years and when they do degrade, they break up into tiny pieces that are impossible to remove from the environment. If a balloon lands in farmland it can be a danger to livestock. Cattle have choked on balloons. A balloon (or a plastic bag) that lands in the sea can be mistaken for food by turtles, dolphins, seals, whales and porpoises. Many thousands of sea mammals die each year from eating plastic including balloons. The animals can slowly starve to death as the digestive tract is blocked by the rubbish from which it gains no nourishment.Theincredibly strong plastic string can cause death or injury too as the creatures easily get tangled up in it. We’re sure none of the people who bought these balloons intended any harm and the 80-year-old and the 3-year-old who were given them would be very upset to think their balloon might have hurt any creature. If you receive a balloon, please make sure that after the party the balloon ends up in the right place – the bin - so that it can be disposed off safely and cause no harm. And instead of buying a balloon as a gift why not consider giving something that will help rather than possibly harm the environment – a packet of flower seeds or a plant that bees and other pollinators would enjoy, a bird feeder or a bird bath, an attractive re-usable shopping bag, a subscription for a local wildlife group... be imaginative!

As there was no theme to the evenings competition the images covered wide and varied topics. From, landscape to portrait, macro to petTheimages.independent judge for the evening was Steven Milner LRPS who travelled from Old Buckenham, Norfolk, and is a member of the Bunwell and District Camera Club. Commenting on the standard of the nights images, Mr Milner said: "The judging was made very difficult to score fairly as all of the images had some merit and were of a high standard. My favourite images of the night were the two mono winning images where the quality and details in the images made them worthy joint firsts."

If you are concerned about litter in the sea you might like to join the River Clean in Woodbridge on Saturday, 10th September from 10:30am to 12:30pm, when the Woodbridge Sea Scouts will be picking up litter in the River Deben and along its banks near town. If you have a small boat or canoe and would like to help, please join in - at your own risk. Life jackets must be worn. At the same time Transition Woodbridge will have litter pickers available for anyone who would like to collect litter along the riverside paths and nearby car parks, streets and parks. Please meet us in Whisstocks Place at 10:30am. At various cafes in Woodbridge and at McColls in Melton you can find Five Minute Litter Pick kits set up by Transition Woodbridge with funding from The Suffolk Coast and Heaths AONB. If you see litter in the area and you have a little time to spare, please use the litter pickers to move the rubbish into a nearby bin. And remember, Jason Alexander continues to lead his Rubbish Walks around Woodbridge, starting at 10am at the Tea Hut on the last Sunday of every month. Litter picking helps our environment – both land and sea – and is surprisingly good fun!
Ten club members enjoyed the cruise to Lowestoft and Southwold, the weather was sunny, with fresh south easterly winds, making a pleasant sail. Thanks go to Steven Lines, our commodore for organising this cruise, and Andy our cruise captain. SADs (safe arrival drinks) were held on the first night in Lowestoft, with a welcome meal at The Royal Norfolk and Suffolk Yacht Club. Boats then departed for Southwold, making a fast passage, and on the return trip boats overtook GB Row Endurance, with six rowers on their way to Tower Bridge from Lowestoft.Cruising in company, and the social activities are surely some of the best reasons for joining Woodbridge Cruising Club, this is especially true for voyages to the continent, or to newMembersdestinations.arelooking forward to future cruises, with voyages abroad to Belgium and France, and the Blackwater a perennial favourite, followed by the Three Rivers and end of cruising supper at RHYC, on the River Orwell. Weekends at the club bar, sitting outside with wonderful views of the river are always popular, as are the Wednesday Barbecues, and the popular August Bank Holiday barbecue. Why not join the cruising club. The club website woodbridgecruisingclub.org.www.hasfulldetailsandnewmembersarewelcome,whetheryouownamotorboatoryacht,orarekeentostart,orresumesailing.

Richard Smith said: “I am pleased that we have been able to extend the pilot of Katch. This is an innovative service which provides on-demand transport links for a rural area in an environmentally friendly way. “Extending the length of the pilot scheme will allow us to gain a more representative picture of demand, including summer visitors, something we could not do in the immediate aftermath of lockdown and as we endeavour to get back to normal."
• Upgrades to the booking app, including an online payment facility. However, as part of the pilot extension a review of current demand has resulted in service hours being adapted. "The last two years have been extremely tough and challenging for all students across the country. Our students can be immensely proud of themselves and their achievements today which are a reflection of their resilience, determination and positivity in the face of adversity. With the support of our school community, including our teachers and our parent body, these fantastic results are testament to the hard work our students have invested into their studies over the last two years, as well as to their dedication towards their personal destinations in life. I take tremendous pride in having the privilege of sharing these results today, and of being a part of the journey our students take through and beyond school, knowing that they will go on to do great things, not just for themselves but also for others." Shona Norman, Head of School.
