History of Woodbridge...

Located in the east of England in the county of Suffolk, Woodbridge has a rich and fascinating history that stretches back over a thousand years. This small but bustling market town has been the site of many significant events throughout the centuries, and is today a popular destination for tourists and history enthusiasts alike.

The earliest recorded history of Woodbridge dates back to the 7th century, when it was known as WodanBrycg, or "bridge of the god Woden". The town was strategically located on the River Deben, which provided access to the sea and made it an important trading centre.

By the time of the Domesday Book in 1086, Woodbridge had grown into a thriving community with a population of over 200 people.

Throughout the medieval period, Woodbridge continued to flourish as a hub of trade and commerce, with wool and cloth being among its most important exports. The town was granted a market charter in 1253 by King Henry III, which allowed it to hold weekly markets and annual fairs, further enhancing its economic importance.Woodbridge also played a key role in the English Civil War, with its strategic location on the River Deben making it a valuable prize for both Royalist and Parliamentary forces.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, Woodbridge experienced a period of growth and expansion, with many fine Georgian and Victorian buildings being constructed. The town became a popular destination for wealthy families, who built large houses and estates in the surrounding countryside. One of the most notable of these was the Sutton Hoo estate, which was home to the famous Anglo-Saxon burial site discovered in 1939 and made famous by the 2021 film, The Dig.

Woodbridge also played an important role in the development of the British navy during this time, with a number of shipyards and naval stores being established in the town. The River Deben was used as a safe haven for ships during times of conflict, and Woodbridge was also home to a number of shipbuilders and sailmakers.

In the 20th century, the town continued to evolve and adapt to changing times. During World War II, Woodbridge was an important centre for military operations, with the RAF establishing a base at nearby Martlesham Heath. After the war, Woodbridge became a popular destination for tourists, with many visitors drawn to the town's historic buildings, picturesque streets, and beautiful surrounding countryside.

Today, you will find a thriving and vibrant community that combines its rich history with a modern and forwardthinking outlook. The town is home to a range of independent shops, restaurants, and cafés, as well as several art galleries

and cultural venues. Visitors can explore the town's fascinating past by visiting its many historic buildings, including the Shire Hall, the Tide Mill, and the stunning St. Mary's Church.

In addition to its cultural and historical attractions, Woodbridge is also known for its beautiful natural surroundings. The town is surrounded by stunning countryside, with the River Deben providing a picturesque backdrop for leisure activities such as boating, fishing, and walking.

The history of Woodbridge is a fascinating and varied one, reflecting the town's importance as a centre of trade, industry, and culture over many centuries. From its origins as a small Anglo-Saxon settlement to its role in the development of the British navy and its current status as a thriving market town and tourist destination, Woodbridge has a rich and diverse history that continues to be celebrated and enjoyed by residents and visitors alike.

Woodbridge Tide Mill...

Woodbridge Tide Mill Living Museum re-opens this year on Saturday 1st April 2023.

The Grade I listed Woodbridge Tide Mill Museum is a rare example of a working tide mill, one of only two in the country still producing stone-ground wholemeal flour. There has been a Tide Mill standing on the banks of the river Deben for over 850 years, with the earliest record dating back to 1170. Woodbridge is fortunate to have this fascinating relic of the Industrial Revolution.

The Mill is an ‘attraction’ for many reasons such as:

History: Woodbridge Tide Mill was operated by Woodbridge Priory during the Middle Ages. After which it passed to Henry VIII and later Elizabeth I. In 1957, the main shaft broke and for ten years it decayed and rotted until saved by Mrs. R.T. Gardner of Wickhambrook who bought it and set up a trust fund to save it. A huge restoration project was carried out and a new waterwheel installed in May 1976. In recent years, further protection and restoration work has brought it back into use as a popular, interactive, working museum with many fascinating exhibits that bring the Mill's rich history to life. It is now one of the most visited and interesting attractions on the Suffolk Coast, thanks to the hard work and commitment of the volunteers and the Board of Trustees.

Food production: We live in a beautiful and bountiful part of the UK. The Tide Mill tells the story from ‘field to fork’. From our nutritious wheat, hard-working farmers to our history of milling and skilful bakers.

Engineering: Constructed in wood, iron and stone the building is an early machine designed to turn local wheat into bread to feed the community. Over centuries the Waterwheel has been driven by the river Deben turning the massive ground floor

Pit Wheel which in turn drives the first floor grinding stones and second floor Crown Wheel that lifts sacks of wheat to the top of the Mill. All of this is on clear display and a real feast for those keen on engineering.

Green energy: With today’s Green Agenda the Mill stands as an eightcenturies-old example of natural, environmentally friendly energy production. So much so that local schools, societies, and other groups come to see ‘free energy’ being produced. The Mill has recently installed a micro generator harnessing this power for more modern uses like charging mobile phones.

Wildlife: located on the river Deben and next to the Marina that stands on the old, larger Millpond. The area is frequented by a wide variety of wading birds, sea birds, migrating birds as well as the occasional seal.

Visitors provide most of the Mill’s funding. The Mill costs around £5,000 per month to run and this doesn’t cover the funds we have to put aside for significant

periodic maintenance. There are several ways to support the Mill:

• Come and visit: Where is a full schedule of wheel turnings to be found on www.woodbridgetidemill.org.uk to see the waterwheel in action and pop into the nearby Longshed and Woodbridge Museum. Groups are very welcome too.

• Buy the Mill’s stoneground flour in the gift shop or at local outlets like the East of England Co-op.

• Become a Friend of Woodbridge Tide Mill: Friends play an essential part in supporting the Tide Mill and are actively involved in raising much needed funds https://woodbridgetidemill.org.uk/bea-friend/

• Volunteer: If you are interested in supporting Woodbridge Tide Mill Museum, please speak to any of the Wardens or Guides at the Mill, or visit: www.woodbridgetidemill.org.uk/ volunteer. Please come and visit this piece of Woodbridge history with all its many attractive facets.

Woodbridge Rotary Club Memory Café...

The Woodbridge Memory Café is a joint venture between the Rotary Clubs of Woodbridge and Woodbridge Deben and Woodbridge Inner Wheel.

It takes place at Woodbridge Football Club on the last Wednesday of every month (except December) from 10:30am to 12pm, and has been running for over 10 years.

We are not trained dementia professionals but aim to provide a welcoming environment where sufferers from all forms of memory loss and their carers can meet and, in the case of the carers, exchange views and information based on their experiences.

We provide memorabilia as conversation starters and the ladies of Inner Wheel serve homemade cakes and tea and coffee. Entertainment is usually on offer and has in the past included choirs, country dancing exhibitions, karaoke and a ukulele band. We find that music offers

excellent stimulus to memory loss sufferers. We have also had visits from members of the dementia care community to advise on available facilities in the area and also a talk on staying safe from the many scams which are perpetrated on elderly people.

Attendee numbers vary from month to month but there are usually 30 to 40 people at each session.

Although we are based in Woodbridge, people from outside the town are equally welcome. Unfortunately, we are not able to provide transport and we have to insist that carers stay at all times.

The Memory Café is funded by the Rotary Clubs, and we have just received an offer of sponsorship from Gotelee Solicitors which we hope will become a long term arrangement. There is no charge for attendance.

If you would like any further information, please contact Rotarian Martin Kenyon on 01394 386933 or email: captainmjk@btinternet.com
