GARDENING FOR LIFE
MAKING THE GRASS GREENER By MEREDITH CREEK Contributing Writer
R
egardless of success or failure, local business owners Richard and Kim Blevins give praise to God. The Highland County couple, who will celebrate 29 years of marriage in August, work together daily to help beautify southern Ohio with sod and seed grass yards. Blevins Sod Farm provides finish grade and installation of yards to residential and commercial customers across the area stating that the best part of their job is “definitely the finished product.” “Customers appreciate that a thick, beautiful lawn can be installed in a few hours versus waiting months or years for a seeded lawn,” Kim said. Richard’s father, Andrew Jackson, started the sod farm business in 1969 and following Andrew’s retirement in the mid-1980s, the farm was turned over to Richard and his brother, Jack Blevins.

t’s 2012 - a great time to be a kid! Think about it. You have the whole world at your fingertips with the Internet, Ipad or cell phone. You can have just about any food, snack or drink you want. (With your parent’s permission, of course!) If you want more excitement in your life there are zoos, amusement parks, television, computer games or a funfilled summer vacation. Even spending a staycation at home in the summer isn’t bad. Ever go swimming in a pool, play computer games or beat the hot weather with air conditioning? You have movies, Walmart and ice cream - even in the winter. What more could a kid want?
Although you might have complaints about being a kid in 2012, you really have it great. Still not convinced? Let’s look back a hundred years to see what your life might have been like in 1912. You probably take getting in your parent’s car or van to go shopping, out
to eat, or to soccer practice for granted. Kids a hundred years ago didn’t have this option. If you anywent where you walked, rode a bicycle, or hitched up the family horse to a buggy or wagon. If you were going on

The moral of the story is that a lot of ideas sound great until you try to act on them. This is just one of the many wonderful fables told by a Greek named Aesop, about 600 years B.C. Aesop was born a slave, but because of his clever wit, he won the affection of his master Iadmon, who set him free. The ex-slave grew in wisdom and renown. He became an adviser to met his doom. kings—and even to the famed Seven “So,” said the leader of the mice, Sages of Greece. The most popular toys are some you probably own too — building blocks, dolls, toy cars and trucks, kites, and a jack in the box. What did kids eat back then? Pretty much the same things you eat today. Almost. In 1912 you could enjoy banana splits, Kellogg’s Corn Flakes and even Oreos – which were invented in 1912! The differences in food choices one hundred years ago is that you had to eat things in season. If you wanted watermelon or bananas in the winter, forget it! Most foods such as vegetables and meats came from local farms or families grew their own. If you wanted to eat tomatoes, you had to plant the seed, water the plant, hoe out the weeds and wait all summer to pick one! Ice cream had to be homemade and cranked by hand in an ice

cream freezer. In 1912 kids didn’t have air conditioning, movies that talked, computers, Wii or most of the things you take for granted today. years following, it is said that the Delphians were plagued with famine, warfare, and pestilence as a punishment for killing Aesop. You can probably guess that at least some of this story is phoney baloney. In fact, some people say that Aesop never existed at all—that one or more people collected popular animal tales under the name of Aesop. It might be disappointing if Aesop turns out to be a "fable,” but it won’t change the value and importance of the stories one eensy bit. They still entertain, and they still illustrate good moral values and common sense. Thank you, Mr. Aesop, wherever-and whoever--you are.

GARDENING FOR LIFE WITHOUT GETTING LOST IN THE WEEDS
Shrubs need pruning only once or twice a year as opposed to perennials’ frequent care. One of best Christmas presents this year was a new gardening book written by Sydney Eddison. I have to admit that I had mix feelings when I read the title, “Gardening for a Lifetime – How to Garden Wiser as You Grow Older.” No one wants to admit that they have turned the corner as far as age goes – plain and simple. My friend has been asking what I thought about the book, and I finally explained that I just hadn’t had time to start reading a book since the seed catalogs had been rolling in. Now that I have started the book, I can’t put it down! The author explains that over the years she had extended her perennial border by a few feet every year until it measured a hundred feet in length and twenty feet in width! “Gardens and Gardeners age and change”, states Eddison, “and I realized suddenly that my garden and I needed help. I had created a garden that was impossible to maintain without assis-
tance.” Step No. 1 of Eddison’s plan became “Re-thinking the Perennial Border.” She developed a standard of good garden behavior for each perennial that included: (a.) It must truly be a perennial and return faithfully every year. (b.) It must be healthy and exhibit fortitude to endure dry summers and cold winters. (c.) It must have superior foliage. (d.) It must maintain a tidy habit-no flopping or sprawling and must remain within reasonable bounds. (e.) It must not offer an invitation to predators, pests, or diseases. A list of Eddison’s perennials with highest marks: sedums, ornamental grasses, blue star (Amsonia), anise hyssop (Agastache), calamint, lily turf (Liriope), false aster (Kalimeris pinnatifida), and blue false indigo (Baptisia australis). The author then suggests substituting shrubs for perennials. The bonus? Shrubs need pruning only
once or twice a year, instead of the regular deadheading and frequent division required by daylilies and many other perennials. Shrubs afford more value for less work and supply strong structural forms to break up the softness of blossom. Eddison then gives her readers a word of warning. “Do your research – it is more difficult to move a shrub than a perennial, so you need to be more careful in your selections. Be especially suspicious of sizes given in nursery catalogs. Beware of dwarf varieties, especially those that are smaller versions of shrubs and trees that eventually become large plants. Try to find out at least approximate sizes in five years, ten years, and 15 years.” I will continue to share tips from Eddison’s book through the month of March. I am beginning to think that I might be rethinking some of my flower beds, and making a wish list of shrubs.
An apology is in order to all the interested gardeners that hoped to attend the free seminar last week (Feb. 23) at the Fincastle campus of Southern State College. I have been reporting the February date incorrectly for months and sincerely apologize to all of you that showed up for the last week. workshop Special thanks to Brown County Master Gardeners Linda Banyea and Nancy Pfeffer for stepping up and leading a discussion about starting seeds. The good news is that there are three more free workshops coming up. I have confirmed the following dates with the SSCC South Campus website: March 15 – Flowers, April 19 – Planting in Containers, and May 17 – Herbs. All workshops are held in the library at the Fincastle campus of Southern State College starting at 6 p.m. — submitted by Faye Mahaffey, OSU Extension Brown County Master Gardener Volunteer

One year into her retirement widow seeks new purpose DEAR ABBY: I am a 64year-old healthy widow with no children. I retired a year ago after a successful 42-year career. I am financially sound. I couldn't wait to retire because my job was demanding, and toward the end it had become extremely stressful. About two months into retirement -- and after taking a few trips -- I began feeling worthless and guilty for being nonproductive. I tried a part-time job, but it wasn't my thing. I'm now considering another part-time job, volunteering or returning to school. I have always wanted to further my education and get a graduate degree, but I don't know if I'm too old to meet the demands. I feel like I lost my identity when I stopped working. I know it had to end one day, but I still have a lot of energy and want to engage in some activity that will revive my self-worth. At this point, I don't know what that will be. Your thoughts and guidance would be greatly appreciated. -- SEARCHING FOR "ME" IN TEXAS DEAR SEARCHING: Not everyone ages at the same rate. Some people wear out faster than others do. Today, for various reasons -- not all of them financial -- many seniors choose to remain in the business world. Their work ethic and experience are valuable assets. If you think a graduate degree would be challenging and would help you in a new career, then by all means, go for it. When people tell me they are thinking of retiring, I always ask, "And what will you be retiring TO?" because I am convinced that retiring to "nothing" is neither physically nor emotionally healthy for individuals who are used to being active.
D EAR AB BY Abigail Van Buren NECTICUT DEAR CONFLICTED: Use the direct approach. Contact your relatives and tell them that while reviewing your account history, you noticed that three of the four gift cards you sent have not been used. Ask if they would like to have them printed out again, if by chance they were lost -- or if they would prefer you send them a check for the value of the cards. To contact them isn't rude, and it shouldn't be awkward. In fact, it may be appreciated. DEAR ABBY: My wife says I am always wrong. Is she right? -- TONGUE IN MY CHEEK DEAR CHEEK: Not this time. Even a stopped clock is right twice a day.
DEAR ABBY: A group of about a dozen friends are planning a Caribbean cruise. My boyfriend, "Isaac," and I have been invited to join them. I love to travel. I don't get to go on trips very often and have never been on a cruise or to the Caribbean, so I'm excited. Isaac, on the other hand, doesn't care much for travel and doesn't enjoy the ocean. He also doesn't like my friend or her husband. They are the ones who are coordinating the trip and who invited us. Isaac rarely socializes with anyone who isn't in his circle of DEAR ABBY: I bought my friends. He doesn't want to go and thinks I shouldn't go, either. aunt, uncle and two teenage Isn't it unfair of him to tell me I cousins gift cards from an can't go? Grass: continued from Page 1 Since 1994, Richard and Kim have been the sole owners of the business. With the office located at 613 N. West St. in Hillsboro and the farm on state Route 124, Blevins Sod Farm is the only sod farm in Highland County, according to Kim. The business supplies area landscapers with sod and offers delivery or farm pickup of sod and/or installation. “(Our services) are available in Highland and surrounding counties,” said Kim, who is responsible for the business’s payroll. “We are proud of the quality of sod we produce, locally… We look forward to working with local builders, landscapers, homeowners, etc…” The Blevinses are also planning an expansion of acreage to accommodate new customers. “We are also in the beginning stages of another family business venture and appreciate the support of Highland County,” Kim said. Richard attended Lynchburg and Hillsboro high schools and Kim attended Hillsboro and
Fairfield Local high schools. In 2001, Kim obtained a bachelor of science in nursing from Mount Carmel College of Nursing and she is employed as a registered nurse at Highland District Hospital’s Geriatric Behavioral Health Unit. The couple has two children, Jeff Blevins and Kristy Crone, and are expecting their first grandchild in May. Jeff works alongside his parents as the manager of the sod farm and his wife, Megan, helps Kristy with tax preparations for the business. Kristy also works as a teacher at Fairfield Elementary School. “When Richard and Jeff are not working at the farm, they complete maintenence and repairs on equipment and complete billing, marketing, etc.,” Kim said. The Blevinses belong to the Highland County Farm Bureau and provide annual services to the St. Jude Dream Home giveaway. They are also members of Samantha Free Will Baptist Church. Those interested in Blevins Sod Farm services can call 937393-5580. Individuals may also call Richard at 937-402-0132, Jeff at 937-402-9596 or Kim at 937-402-0124.

Dentists have long cautioned women about “pregnancy gingivitis,” which is caused by hormonal changes and affects more than half of all pregnant women. Usually, the gum inflammation associated with pregnancy-related gum disease occurs between the second and eighth months of pregnancy, and manifests itself in gums that look red and bleed somewhat during brushing. Without conscientious attention to good oral-hygiene habits and professional dental care, this mild form of gum disease (gingivitis) can lead to a more serious form of gum disease (periodontitis). If left untreated, gum disease poses risks to babies’ health such as premature birth, low birth weight, and even full-term stillborn birth. Pregnant women have more reason than their own oral health to seek regular dental care.

ASTROLOGY MONDAY, MARCH 5, 2012 CELEBRITIES BORN ON THIS DAY: Kevin Connolly, 38; Matt Lucas, 38; Eva Mendes, 38; Dean Stockwell, 76. HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Don't slow down when you should be gearing up and building momentum. What you do this year can determine whether you gain ground in the coming years or struggle to maintain what you have. Think big, but keep things simple and stick to a budget that will ease your stress, not make it skyrocket. Your numbers are 3, 9, 13, 25, 28, 32, 41. ARIES (March 21-April 19): Express your feelings and what you intend to do to make your life better socially, personally and emotionally. Don't allow someone else to make choices for you. Recognize that too much of anything will bring you down. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Take precautions when it comes to your home and family. Protect your assets and reputation. Don't let emotions complicate matters by overreacting to occurrences that need practical attention. Learn from past mistakes and you'll avoid an unpleasant situation. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): You will annoy someone with your choices, but you must follow the path that suits you best. Take care of any paperwork that might pose a problem if left undone. Follow all rules and regulations, and move full steam ahead. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Put your heart into your work and improvements you can make. Don't let changes affect your productivity. An aggressive and playful approach to your important personal relationship will give you a better understanding of friendship and love. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Stick to basics, but be original. You can create a stir if you use your quick wit and charm to impress someone you'd like to get to know better. Travel plans will lead to information that will help you make an important decision. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Make your investments work for you. Don't leave anything to chance. Focus on getting the most for the least and stick to whatever budget you set. Love and romance are in the stars, but that doesn't mean you should spend. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Look at your personal and professional relationships and make changes to strengthen the connections or to rid yourself of the people who are holding you back. Don't make a fuss when all that's required is to move on. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Get your priorities straight. You may feel like having fun, but you need to take care of your responsibilities first. You can make or break a relationship with someone depending on how you handle your share of the work. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Avoid storytelling or getting involved in gossip. You should be focusing on your investments and contracts, and networking with people who motivate you. Any changes made to your domestic scene will pay off. Love is in the stars. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): You may not want to initiate a conversation about emotional matters, but you'd be wise to clear up any misunderstand-
ing or problem before you try to move forward with your plans. You can stretch your money by making the choice. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Nothing is as bad or difficult as it might seem. Taking care of personal matters or getting together with someone special will help ease your stress. Keep things simple and be direct when discussing money matters to come out ahead.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Don't go overboard or someone who can influence your future may think you are extravagant. Use your ingenuity, imagination and ability to get others to do things for you for free, and you will show skills that impress and bring you rewards. BIRTHDAY BABY: You are imaginative, versatile and quick to judge. You are bold and courageous.
