‘CROP COULD GO EITHER WAY’ By ANGELA SHEPHERD OCM News Service
J
im Patton, of the Highland County USDA Farm Service Agency, said "the jury is still out...this crop could still go either way," in reference to the thousands of acres planted across the county. As to the wet weather through the weekend, Patton said, "The bottom line is that everybody was glad to see the rain," adding that "maybe the weekend rain will help some of the dry area crops catch up." Patton said that this year is "unique because of its wide planting range." A lot of farmers got a very early start on planting, as early as April 10, because the "soil conditions were so favorable and the farmers were trying to stay ahead of the game," he said. According to Patton, what we have right now is Angela Shepherd/The Times-Gazette "nothing more than a decent, normal crop." While that may not sound like a terrible Farmers are hoping that the weekend rain will help some of the dry-area crops catch up with those doing

ENJOY FRESH RASPBERRIES Picking fresh raspberries is rewarding and fun, and raspberries are easy to grow. If you’ve ever picked wild berries you’ve seen how well brambles produce with very little attention; you can have fat, juicy berries in your own yard with a little work. Pick a spot that gets good air circulation, far from any wild brambles. Avoid soils where tomatoes, potatoes, melons, eggplant or strawberries have grown recently. If your berry patch is in converted lawn, treat it with Milky Spore to kill any white grubs. It easiest to start with containergrown plants, and you’ll get fruit the first year if you do. Bare-root raspberries should only be planted in the very early spring. Look for vigorous plants with strong healthy stems. Raspberry roots are shallow and need well-drained soil, ideally pH 6.0 to 7.0, with some compost or shredded pine bark mixed in. Soggy or wet soils will rot the roots of your raspberries. Fertilize with Espoma Plant Tone or Garden Tone before you plant, and then monthly during the season. Mulching with straw or pine bark keeps the soil moist, prevents weeds, and keeps the fruit clean. Raspberries should be planted in rows, spaced two feet apart with at least six feet between rows. Newly installed plants need frequent watering, and watering should be stepped up in the month before harvest. Trickle or drip systems help. Pruning raspberries is simple once you understand the basics. New canes on raspberry plants don’t bear fruit until their second year, and then they die. The middle section of each cane produces most of the fruit, so it’s good to shorten the canes and strip the side branches off the bottom foot of each cane. This prevents sandy fruit, and helps air circulation. In early spring, cut off the weakest
RASPBERRIES canes and shorten the rest so they’ll stand up straight; four to five feet works best. On black or purple raspberries, cut to three feet and shorten the side branches to ten inches also. After harvest, cut off the old, woody fruiting canes completely. On black or purple raspberries, cut the tips off the remaining canes. Healthy raspberry plants can be grown without trellises or supports using this method. It’s easy to raise raspberries without pesticides. Bramble pests tend to damage the stems and roots, not the fruit itself. Cutting off damaged canes slows them down. Funguses and blights can
be prevented with good housekeeping and good air circulation. You can limit virus diseases by buying healthy, virusresistant plants, controlling host weeds, and keeping your raspberry patch neat and clean all year long. ——— Steve Boehme is the owner of GoodSeed Farm Country Nursery & Landscape, located on Old State Route 32 three miles west of Peebles. The first rule of decorum comes into play well before the wedding, upon receipt of the invitation. The paper, the script, and especially the location chosen will give you a good idea of how you should dress for the event. Remember that the later the hour of the ceremony, the more formal the attire usually is. Even for a black-tie and gown reception, leave your long, sequined dresses and plunging necklines at home. It would be in poor taste to upstage the bride.

Similarly, women guests should never wear white at any time during the wedding day; this colour is reserved for the bride. A general rule for male guests is to wear a suit and tie and avoid the colour brown. If the invitation mentions that children are not invited, the wishes of the bride and groom must be respected. Only the people whose names appear on the invitation envelope are counted for the guest list. And if your partner cannot attend, you should never invite a friend to accompany you without consulting with the couple first. Finally, any self-respecting guest brings a wedding gift. If the bride and groom have organized a wedding registry, you don’t necessarily have to comply with it. You could offer a gift of cash money or any other inspired gesture. It is fine to bring the gift to the reception, but even better is to send it to the bride and groom or to the matron of honour in advance of the wedding. PHOTO: MARC DEBNAM / THINKSTOCK

ASTROLOGY MONDAY, JUNE 25, 2012 CELEBRITIES BORN ON THIS DAY: Busy Phillips, 33; Jason Lewis, 41; Ricky Gervais, 51; Carly Simon, 67. HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Concentrate on home, family and creativity. Develop your environment to suit the needs of those you love. The more activity you can drum up in familiar places, the better you will do. You may not enjoy change, but it will improve your lifestyle. Apply pressure where it's needed and you will reach your goals. Your numbers are 3, 8, 15, 22, 30, 42, 46. ARIES (March 21-April 19): Be honest about what you can and cannot contribute. Size up your situation and understand what's needed, especially if institutions, agencies or finances are involved. A little can go a long way, but precision and timing will be essential. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Take a minimalist position, regardless of what anyone else says or does. Too much of anything will be your downfall. Don't initiate change or travel unnecessarily. Listen, but reserve judgment and decisions until you are certain of your goals. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Don't jump to conclusions, take sides or make assumptions. Evaluate each situation separately and make decisions based on observation, not speculation. Lowering your overhead and simplifying your life will enable you to excel, slowly but surely. CANCER (June 21-July 22): You will find ways to improve your surroundings and your relationships if you look hard enough. Don't limit the possibilities. Explore avenues that can change your lifestyle and your attitude regarding creative ventures. New beginnings will pay off. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Withhold information if you think it might incriminate you. Patience and tolerance will be required to avoid being restricted or limited by anyone sitting in an influential position. Rely on experience to help you make the right choice now. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Take note of what's happening at home and at work. You may have to counter a move that has the potential to hold you back. Don't let emotions prevent you from moving forward with your plans. Productivity must not be sacrificed. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Waffling or holding back the way you really feel will not help you get ahead. Love, romance and self-improvement should all be at the top of your list. Plan your actions carefully, however, and stick to a set budget. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Make suggestions and be passionate about your pursuits. An intuitive guide will help you make the right choices regarding your investments and alterations to your home. Don't be fooled by a greedy fast-talker. Be willing to change your mind. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): You cannot please everyone, so do what's best for you. Altering the way you live or lowering your overhead will help relieve stress. Don't let emotions stand in the way of a good decision. Act on fact, not on hearsay. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Avoid impulsive expenditures. Budget and pay outright
for anything you want. A change in your social plans or love life will be to your benefit. Children or a free-spirited individual can help you recognize alternative options. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): The more you do to enhance your surroundings, the better you will feel about your future. Greater financial confidence will help you present a better depiction of what you have to offer.
Base your changes on experience. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Stick to what you do best and offer what you can to those in need, but don't give to someone who is looking for a free ride. Choose your battles and your allies carefully. Don't let emotions interfere with progress. BIRTHDAY BABY: You are creative, precise, open and determined to do well.

Medical Update Regular users of smokeless tobacco should understand that they face much the same risk of developing cancer as their tobacco-smoking counterparts. In 1986, the Surgeon General warned that the use of smokeless tobacco “is not a safe substitute for smoking cigarettes. It can cause cancer and a number of noncancerous conditions and can lead to nicotine addiction and dependence.” Both chewing tobacco and snuff (shredded tobacco in a pouch) contain 28 (cancer-causing carcinogens agents), the most harmful of which are the tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNAs). The National Cancer Institute warned that nitrosamines, which are present in smokeless tobacco at relatively high levels, are not safe at any level. Smokeless tobacco users increase their risk for cancer of the oral cavity.
