Philip & Kelvin LaVerne American Artists Specializing In Distinctive Sculpted Bronze Furniture

8

Philip (American, 1907 - 1987) and Kelvin (American, b 1937) LaVerne were a father and son team and furniture manufacturers from 1950 until 1991. They created one of a kind and limited edition pieces that were both functional and sculptural. Many of the techniques used were based on centuries-old bronze casting methods. They also employed acid etching and developed a process where pieces were buried for over a month in soil mixed with chemicals to accelerate patination. Their shared interest in history heavily influenced their designs, many of which flourished in traditional motifs that were historically inspired; Chinese, Greek, Egyptian and Etruscan scenes were used along with abstract influences. Furniture pieces included tables, consoles and cabinets combining bronze, pewter and glass. All pieces were signed by both father and son.
