Ryan McLaughlin 5, shows his support for the Phillies.
. . . because we’re getting ready to celebrate all things Phillies — most of all, the fans. Phillies fans aren’t a bandwagon sort. We’ve watched through hopeless slumps, blown leads and sleeping bats, even when we wanted to turn away. We hoped for success so intently, and for so long, that we like to think we collectively willed the Phillies to win. We view our recent luck — four ace pitchers, a World Series win in 2008 and consistent playoff berths — as a survivor of the Great Depression might have looked at a stock-market windfall. We still can’t get over our good fortune. But we sure are enjoying it. From living-room TVs to Diamond Club seats, we root heartily for our Phils. And away from the splendid confines of Citizens Bank Park, we smile when we see a car magnet, red T-shirt or other emblem that implies we’re in the company of a fellow Phillies fan. There aren’t many rules to our unspoken fraternity: We love our players and the Phanatic. We hate our rivals. And we miss Harry Kalas. We all have our favorite Phillies memories, and some of you have shared yours for this special section that explores the fan experience. So read, enjoy and go Phillies!

Head's up
Promotions are serious business By RENEE R. JANOWICZ For the Courier-Post
Some ball clubs offer giveaways to boost ticket sales. Some do it to stir up fan frenzy. But even with a schedule full of sold-out games where fans paint themselves in team colors to show their devotion, giveaways make a difference. That’s the contention of Scott Brandreth, director of merchandise for the Philadelphia Phillies. “It used to be very easy to test” whether freebies helped ticket sales, he said. “Right now every game’s 43,000 (or) 44,000” — selling out without clearly being tied to the promotions schedule. But Brandreth recalled a game in the 2010 season that included a Carlos Ruiz bobble figurine. It was a sellout, like every other game that season, but rain threatened to keep ticket-holding fans home. ‘‘I was trying to measure the impact of a giveaway even with a sellout,” Brandreth said. He checked the number of ticket-holders who showed up and compared it to another rainy sellout that didn’t feature such a prime giveaway. ‘‘Even though the ticket (sales) were the same, the no-show factor was less because of the giveaway,” he said. Bobble figurines — more than a head, he insisted — are among the most popular promos. The Phillies aim for two of those each season; Brandreth said any more than that might dilute the attraction. This year’s featured players are Roy Oswalt on May 24 and Placido Polanco on Aug. 16. ‘‘We’re always going to do some hats. We’re always going to do some T-shirts,” he said. “The bobble figurines we’ve been doing for about 10 years now, and they seem to work pretty well.” Planning starts as soon as one season is over, with weekly meetings throughout the year to drum up ideas, identify vendors and review sample merchandise. The Phillies use just a handful of suppliers so the club can be assured of quality and quantity, Brandreth said. His staff gets ideas from an annual meeting of other clubs, a noncompetitive atmosphere because, after all, Philadelphia isn’t going to steal any customers from San Francisco. A hit giveaway from last year — the Chase Utley action figure — was inspired by the San Diego Padres, he said. This year the Phillies will spotlight Ryan Howard in that fashion with a Sept. 18 giveaway. So far, Brandreth hasn’t been stuck with boxes of promos that touted a player who had been traded after the merchandise was ordered. He did have a poster that showed a group of players — including one who switched teams mid-season — but fans still took them home. Even a player’s injury wouldn’t diminish the value of a giveaway, he said. Unlike other clubs, the Phillies aren’t the sort who restrict giveaways to the first 10,000 or 20,000 fans, Brandreth said. Some are passed out to specific categories — kids or moms, for instance — but everyone in that group who shows up gets a prize. ‘‘It’s never been our belief that you want to turn down the ten-thousandand-first kid,” he said. “If it’s advertised to you,

you’re going to get it.” Brandreth, who has been in his job since 1998, has seen the rate of giveaways rise significantly in the past decade. Sundays used to always include a freebie that helped push games toward sellout status; now there are giveaways for about half the season’s games. ‘‘Sometimes we go crazy in September and we give away rally towels six games in a row,” he said. Rally towels created some unexpected controversy last fall, when players including Shane Victorino and Raul Ibanez admitted they could be a hindrance rather than a help. While a sea of white, waving towels is a great sign of fan support, it also makes a difficult backdrop in which to track a

little white ball. Brandreth said the merchandise office hasn’t been told to make a color change, and he noted that anything other than white would come at a higher cost. ‘‘We’re just kind of taking our direction from the baseball people,” he said. “If there was a major, major issue, they would tell us not to do it.” The team did pass out red towels for opening day once at Veterans Stadium, Brandreth said. Since fans often wear red, the impact was softened. ‘‘If they’re swirling a red towel, it doesn’t have nearly the effect on the stadium as the white one.”

Critics tough on fans? Boo asked for it
In just the fourth game of the season this year, with three wins already under their red caps, the Phillies sent Cole Hamels to the mound. The lean left-hander with the thick resume of accomplishments in Philadelphia, including the World Series Most Valuable Player in 2008, only managed to get eight outs that evening against the Mets. After manager Charlie Manuel made the long walk to the mound to pull Hamels, the Phillies pitcher made an even longer walk to the dugout accompanied by a surprising chorus of boos. The response by the sold-out crowd at Citizens Bank Park was indeed a shocker to even veteran followers of the franchise who witnessed fans routinely boo Hall of Fame third baseman Mike Schmidt as if he was the one who cracked the Liberty Bell. After all, this was Hamels’ first start of the season, the team was 3-0 and he was coming off a really good season last year in which his average record was only the result of poor run support. Still, the boos — or as it’s known around here, the South Philly cheer — rained on Hamels. Indeed, Philadelphia fans are known to be as tough as a two-day-old cheese steak. This is how bad it can be. At a charity event, Sarah Madson, wife of Phillies reliever Ryan Madson, reportedly told Naked Philadelphian blogger Laura Goldman that she hates fans.
Kevin Callahan
“It is bad enough that they bother us during the season, but they will not leave us alone in December when we go out to eat,” Goldman quoted Sarah Madson as saying. “We stayed here during the off season last year, but we will be going to California this year. There must be something particularly bad about Phillies fans because all the players leave in the off season.” Of course, it could also be the cold and snow, but the point is made, even if the Madsons and the Phillies say the comment was taken out of context. Still, while the Philly Fan isn’t always fair, he is knowledgeable and passionate. And players and coaches accept both sides of fans who cheer one minute and boo the next. “It’s part of baseball,” Manuel said about Hamels being booed. “If they pay money to come see us, and they feel like they don’t like something, they’ll let you know or whatever, and you’ve got to handle that.” Unfortunately, the rest of the country doesn’t view the Phillies fans with the same pragmatism. Phillies fans were recently voted by GQ magazine as tied for the “Worst Sports Fans in America.” And, this was before the

Or, is it the bottom? Whatever, Phillies fans tied with — wait for it — Eagles fans at No. 1. Behind Philly’s baseball and football fans are some notorious fans with bad reputations, which really punctuates what the country thinks about us. Trailing Philadelphia
1919 Greentree Road Suite B Cherry Hill, NJ 08003 P: 856-424-0993
are fans of the West Virginia Mountaineers at No. 3 while fans of the Oakland Raiders and Maryland Terps basketball round out the top five. Then there are the fans of the Boston Red Sox, Penn State football, Duke basketball, the New York Yankees and LSU football residing in spots No. 6 through 10. Sadly, the perception nationwide of the Philadelphia fan endures even
from way back when Eagles fans famously threw snowballs at Santa Claus at old Franklin Field and when they cheered Cowboys wide receiver Michael Irvin as he was laid out on the cold Veterans Stadium turf. Of course, Phillies fans have more recent snapshots of their bad behavior since those particular ESPN highlights. Last year, a drunken fan intentionally vomited on an 11-year-old girl, and
another ran onto the field at Citizens Bank Park only to be Tasered and dropped to the outfield turf. Booing Hamels didn’t help the negative view of the Philly fan around the country, either. So, there you are. Phillies fans are No. 1. Let’s here it for us. Yeah! Or is it boo? Reach Kevin Callahan at kcallahan@camden.gannett.com

It’s all fun and games
Stadium amenities enhance the action on the field
By RENEE R. JANOWICZ
For the Courier-Post ‘‘Take me out to the ball game Take me out with the crowd Buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jack I don’t care if I never get back’’ Odd that the lyrics sung during the seventh-inning stretch don’t even mention a player, the score or the standings. They’re all about food, ambiance and other stuff that makes a baseball game fun. Teams such as the Phillies have been capitalizing on those diversions for years, adding to the stadium experience with orchestrated marriage proposals, confetti-strewn birthday celebrations and jugglers who entertain when the hot-dog line gets long. “It adds to the entertainment and the fun of being at the ballpark,” said Chris Long, aptly called the director of entertainment for the Phillies. Long oversees a range of activities including birthday and anniversary cheer, roving talent and the autographing of homerun balls. Her staff includes about 55 people who work the crowds as Phanstormers. They greet ticket-holders in Ashburn Alley, pull games out of their pockets to keep kids entertained, and present cards and confetti for special occasions.
Photos by TOM BRIGLIA/Phillies
Kids have Citizens Bank Park to themselves and get to hang out in the dugout during a tour of the ballpark. The stadium hosts tours for schools and other groups when the Phillies are out of town. ‘‘The majority of them are local performers,” Long said. “Some of them are jugglers and some of them can do balloon animals.”
Spotlight moments
Fans might see Phanstormers making their way through the crowds to sing “Happy Birthday” before tossing confetti and presenting the target with a Phillies hat. That costs $25; a less expensive way to mark a birthday is to have it posted on the scoreboard
($12). Anniversary celebrants who want their names on the scoreboard pay $30. That top-of-thefifth announcement includes a framed photo of the couple. A romantic baseball fan also might opt for a live broadcast of his marriage proposal on the big screen. The $450 package deal includes four tickets, a broadcast proposal, a champagne toast and a DVD of the experience. ‘‘It’s actually a really easy thing to book,” said
Stephanie Nieland, group tour and sales representative. “They know they want to do it, so we just find a date and slot them in.” The park sees about 30 of those proposals each year, always timed for the bottom of the fourth inning. Typically, a Phillies employee scouts around to make sure the woman didn’t skip off to the restroom or ice-cream stand at an inopportune time. The woman usually notices the camera operator and fig-
ures she’ll be broadcast on the big screen; a moment later she understands why. Nieland, who has been arranging these proposals for five years, said she has never seen a man turned down.
Kid stuff
Kids get their own fun, starting with a certificate when they attend a Phillies game for the first time. That freebie notes the honoree’s name and the game’s date. Another delight for
youngsters is the chance to run the bases, an opportunity available once afternoon games have ended on specific dates. June 11 is the first scheduled date this season. “The kids all line up outside the ballpark. We bring them in and they’re allowed to take a lap around the bases,” Nieland said. “They get a certificate for that, too.” (Fans 55 and older get their own event — Senior Stroll the Bases on May 26.) When they’re not watching the game, kids can play games at several spots around Citizens Bank Park: in Ashburn Alley near the right-field gate entrance, and the Phanatic Phun Zone near the firstbase gate. Other areas geared toward kids include the Phanatic Attic store (second level of the Majestic Clubhouse Store) and the Phood Stand in Ashburn Alley that dishes out smaller portions of hot dogs, pretzels and drinks.
Food for all
Ah, yes, the hot dogs. For kids or adults, they are hands-down the No. 1 food purchase year in and year out. ‘‘When you’re in the stands and you’re in the stadium, a hot dog just tastes better,” said Jeremy Campbell, Aramark director of concessions at the park. Fans bought about

Fun/Find food, entertainment and the chance for a stadium shout-out Continued from Page 8SS
10,600 hot dogs on Opening Day, he said. That’s more than twice the traditional second-place seller of cheese steaks, which logged a mere 4,000 sales. The hot-dog frenzy peaks on Hatfield Dollar Dog Nights, when cheap pricing also includes the vegan and veggie dogs available near Section 128. ‘‘It’s the only night of the year where it’s OK to eat more than three hot dogs,” Campbell said. “You’ll see fans happily buying four or five hot dogs.” Like last year, the Phillies are asking fans to vote on a new food favorite, choosing between the grilled chipotle chicken wrap and char-grilled turkey burger. Aramark will track sales figures and online voting, then announce the winner after the AllStar Game. The wrap combines grilled chicken, sliced avocado, tomato, romaine lettuce, cilantro and low-fat yogurt in whole wheat. The burger features a seasoned turkey patty adorned with sliced avocado and house-
made tomato salsa on a multi-grain whole wheat roll. Voting started on Opening Day at www.phillies.com/sandwich. “The fans enjoy making a decision about what’s going to be sold in the park,” Campbell said. “We saw this last year” with a showdown among three styles of hot dogs that produced a Philly-style winner. There was no such fan input as recently as a decade ago, he said. Now, Aramark continually polls fans on what they want, in addition to watching sales of what’s already offered. When the team moved from Veterans Stadium to Citizens Bank Park in 2004, planners were intent on keeping a local flavor. ‘‘The stadium is an extension of South Philly,” Campbell said. “It was important for us to incorporate what folks were eating outside the park.” Hence the addition of food from places such as Campo’s Deli and Tony Luke’s — local, mediumsized, mom-and-pop places with roots in the neighborhood.
park. But they have to act fast by following the staff member who will soon appear nearby. ‘‘We have them come (to Guest Services) with Phillies personnel because that’s the only way we can guarantee that it’s a Phillies home-run ball,” Long said. The lucky fan will be offered a stand-in ball until the Phillies can get the signature and return the original by mail. There is no charge, but there are restrictions. It can’t be a foul ball, and it can’t be a homer hit by the opposing team.

Bars, stands teem with flirty subculture
By TARA NURIN
For the Courier-Post It’s an hour before a Phillies home game on a balmy April afternoon, and five women are finishing their burgers and beers at McFadden’s, teasing one another about the players they think are steamy. The names Cliff Lee, Roy Halladay and Cole Hamels are tossed around — each one met by an incredulous and highpitched “What??” from a tablemate who disagrees. “I love baseball but I think having a goodlooking team brings out more women,” interrupts 22-year-old Caitlin Marx from West Philadelphia, who comes to check out Cliff Lee now that her previous choice in eye candy, Jayson Werth, has been traded. “Typically, I think girls wear the jersey of the hottest players. Except, I hope, for Jenny.” Four women turn toward Jenny and lift up her sweatshirt. “Ewww!” they squeal when the number on her T-shirt is revealed. (To protect that player’s feelings, we won’t reveal his name here.) Lighthearted scenes like this are popping up all over Citizens Bank Park as the Phillies get ready for what will be a hard-fought, high-scoring win against the Mets. At the bars, in the parking lots and in the stands, before, during and some-

Phillies fans Lauren Schaeffer, Megan Tuohey, Jeremy Hyped and Jason Kunkle enjoy a few beers at McFadden’s during a game earlier this month. The ballpark is a popular place for 20- and 30-somethings to have fun, socialize and maybe even find a date. times after the games, one of the most social spots in the Philly area is inarguably at the ballpark. It makes sense. There are more than 43,000 fans at every home game, and even though the team doesn’t track the demographics of ticket-
holders, it’s evident that a sizable percentage of the crowd is in the 21-to-35 range. Mostly kid-free, they’re there to have fun with friends, dates, significant others, and acquaintances from work or school. In some cases, they turn a three-hour
game into an excuse to party all day. Take Casey Blair. The 23-year-old’s been playing Flipcup in Lot K, one of 13 lots where tailgating is allowed, since she and her friends from Lambertville parked and set up a plastic table behind their
car four hours before game time. “We come out here to get pumped. We rag on the other team’s fans, they rag on us and it gets a fun back-and-forth going,” she laughs. While there’s plenty of natural Phillies spirit
coursing through the region, team staffers encourage more socializing, more group pride and more attendance by setting aside tickets at certain games for specific alumni associations, universities and so on. One group grilling burgers in the parking lot is skipping class at Thomas Jefferson University to bond with other students who are also ditching. It is, after all, “Jefferson Night.” “It’s nice to get together outside of school and see a lot of familiar faces,” says med student and Cherry Hill native Michelle DeLeon, who’s just spotted some classmates she didn’t expect to see. Running into acquaintances and friends at a game is almost inevitable for anyone who’s lived in Philly for any length of time. But it can sometimes be more fun to bump into them on purpose. For example, everyone who knows package ticket-holder Jen McKim knows to find her in the middle of the fifth inning at the High & Inside Pub. That’s when the 26-yearold Philadelphia resident and her boyfriend meet up with their packageticket-holding friends and watch the next few innings on TV with them and anyone else who joins them. “All of our friends are in separate seats but we know mid-fifth to come

here. It’s a meeting place for everyone,” she says. High & Inside, on the terrace level, is the stadium’s only indoor bar open to all seat-holders. There are other drinking establishments, namely those in the Hall of Fame Club and the Diamond Club, that boast a higher tier of alcohol and ambience, but those are offlimits to fans who don’t have club or suite-level seats. For everyone else, there’s McFadden’s, which is owned by a separate corporation and open to both ticketed and non-ticketed fans; Harry the K’s, below the scoreboard; and the Bud Light Rooftop, just above Ashburn Alley; not to mention the dozens of stands that sell take-away beer and food. But ask anyone at the ballpark and they’ll tell you that McFadden’s — with its live bands, busty beer babes and full wait staff — is the most popular, especially before and after games. It’s definitely a favorite for 24-year-old Jason Kunkle, who on this day is here with a male buddy and two shy young women. When asked if they’re on a double date, the ladies look uncomfortable and push themselves deep into a corner, while Kunkle grins and says, “Regardless of whether I’m on a date, I come here to get a few beers before the game. So by bringing a girl here, I’m bringing her into my world.” He adds that a Phils
“You know a Phillies game is the hot-girl capital of the world.”
Ryan Banks, 24, from Mount Holly
game makes for a perfect date because the high-intensity emotion on the field and in the stands works to build up attraction between seatmates. And as anyone who’s ever scored digits at a game knows, Phillies games can also be a win for singles who arrive dateless. Ryan Banks, a 24-yearold from Mount Holly who’s waving a sign that says, “*56* I (Heart) Joe Blanton,” has chosen to observe the game from Ashburn Alley, where he and his brother can peoplewatch, especially for single ladies. He’s hoping that he’ll get to put up some numbers of his own. “You know a Phillies game is the hot-girl capital of the world,” he says with a smile. With the Phillies up by six on this temperate night early in an optimistic season, Citizens Bank Park itself feels like the capital of the world. Almost anything seems possible, and it’s easy to believe that this Joe Blanton admirer may well spend part of the night hanging out with a new friend — possibly even one who wears a “56” on her back.

Jenny Uni (from left), Alison James, Tonya Cooper, Caitlin Marx and Michelle Cassium have something serious to talk about — who’s the most attractive Phillie. The names Cliff Lee, Cole Hamels and Roy Halladay are tossed around as the women hang out at McFadden’s before a game.

Fellow fan makes a save
Going to the Bank to watch the Phillies in 2007 was different than it is now. For one thing, you didn’t need to buy a ticket months in advance to see a game. Back before the arrival of Roy Halladay or Cliff Lee, before the 2008 World Championship or the first of four consecutive division titles, the Phillies didn’t sell out every home game. Fans could walk up to the ticket window an hour before game time and still buy a choice seat at face value. By late September 2007, when Jimmy Rollins was having an MVP year on the heels of Ryan Howard’s MVP season, the Phillies had moved into contention. It was their third consecutive year to vie for the division title, having just missed by a game or so in both ’05 and ’06. It was an exciting time, but there were still tickets available when my son, Michael, and I showed up to see the Phils play the 159th game of the season. The Mets were in their historic freefall and the Fightins, with a win, had a rare chance to move into first place in the division. But there was a problem at the ticket window:
Mike Franolich
Somehow, I had left my credit cards at home. Not good. My son and I were amped for this. Disappointment and a little bit of anger began to show. Then came relief. “Do you need two?” a man behind us asked. Great, I thought, a scalper. Yeah, I need two. “I’ve got two,” the guy said, shoving a pair of tickets toward me. “Here. Just take them.” But I was hesitant. Were they stolen? Were they fake? “You don’t understand,’’ said the man, who introduced himself as John. “Just take them. I don’t need them.” Holy crap, I thought. These tickets looked real. And they were gratis. For the biggest game of the year. I was thankful, and stunned, by this random act of kindness. “Enjoy the game,” John said, and he walked into the Bank with his daughter, Meghan. Michael and I were left
with incredulous smiles. We couldn’t believe it. My glasses were home with my credit cards, so an attendant checked the tickets for us. He glanced at them casually and then his voice rose with excitement. “Any good?” he said. “These are Diamond Club. They’re the best seats in the house.” I took the tickets back and squinted at the price: $70 each. But coming as they did, like manna from heaven, from another fan, they were priceless. Michael and I watched the game from directly behind home plate, just 10 rows back. We were so close, we could hear the pitches spin into the catcher’s mitt and grind against its leather. With rally towels in hand, and John and Meghan next to us, we watched the Phils dismantle John Smoltz and the Braves to end the night in a tie for first place. In the pandemonium after the final pitch, I leaned over to John and thanked him one last time for one unforgettable night at the ballpark. Phillies fan Mike Franolich is a Courier-Post editor and lifelong baseball fan. He saw the light seven seasons ago when he stopped rooting for the New York Mets.

Citizens Bank Park holds numerous memories for longtime Phillies fans. Mike Franolich, a Courier-Post editor, recalls one special evening when a fellow fan offered him two free Diamond Club seats after he forgot his credit card at home.

After 50 years, ticket agent is MVP When the Phillies won the World Series in 2008, Tom Reiter was one of the team employees awarded a replica of the players’ championship ring. The 76-year-old Reiter, a resident of Washington Township, has spent a halfcentury working at the team’s comp ticket window, and he views that ring as a symbol of all the years he has put into the organization. “When the Phillies honored me with a ring,” he said, “That really capped off all the years.” Fans who stop by window 29 on the first-base side at Citizens Bank Park on any given game night are welcome to see Reiter’s ring. He’s happy to display it for anyone who asks. “What’s made it so great is that I enjoy being able to show the ring at my booth to all the guests that come in,” Reiter said. “It makes me kind of a hero because people see the ring on TV, and in the papers and the pictures, but they never see the ring. “I get a kick out of taking it off, and showing the people — especially the customers I know. I’ll actually slide it out the window and let them put it on their finger, and they take pictures of it, which really makes it neat.” Many a season has passed since Reiter first took his post at the courtesy window at Connie Mack Stadium in 1961. As you’d expect over a span of so many years, Reiter has seen lots of bad seasons, and lots of good ones as well. He was there when the
Don Benevento
Phillies won the World Series in 1980, but overall, the most recent seasons have probably been the best years of Reiter’s tenure with the team. The Phillies have become perennial winners in the National League East and are gunning this season to play in their third World Series in four years. “It’s been a great atmosphere since we moved to the new ballpark, and people are so friendly,” Reiter said. “It’s really a fun time. I get along with everybody.” Since the team moved out of Veterans Stadium and into Citizens Bank Park, Reiter’s role has changed somewhat. He now deals mostly with handing out tickets to players’ wives and scouts. But there was a time when many of his clients were celebrities of a different ilk, including actors Danny Glover and George Wendt (the latter of “Cheers” fame), singers Bonnie Raitt and Carly Simon, and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani. Among his possessions is a collection of what he describes as “hundreds of autographs” from celebrities who have signed for tickets. “Over the years we had everyone come through my booth,” Reiter said. “When (syndicated talk-show host) Mike Douglas was doing
his show out of Philadelphia (his guests) came out to the ballpark.” Recent visitors to Reiter’s window have included former heavyweight champion Joe Frazier and ex76ers basketball coach Larry Brown. Sixers, Eagles and Flyers players also regularly pass through Reiter’s post. “I’ve had Willie Mays come by, Charles Barkley,’’ Reiter said. “I guess in the time I’ve worked at this job, I must have met hundreds of thousands of people.” And collected one big, beautiful ring.

It's never all work when the Phillies play By HELEN MANNION For the Courier-Post
It was October 6, 2010 — Game 1 of the National League Division Series. Every single person at Citizens Bank Park was on his or her feet, anxiously awaiting every pitch from Roy Halladay. The stadium roared with excitement with each strike the umpire called and booed in anger with each ball. But when Cincinnati’s Brandon Phillips hit a dribbler up the first baseline, everything went quiet as fans held their breath. Would this be it? A nohitter? Only the second such feat in postseason history? Would those of us in attendance be so fortunate? The tension, thick and palpable, finally broke when Phils’ catcher Carlos Ruiz dove to his knees and threw in time to first baseman Ryan Howard to get Phillips and record the final out. The place erupted into thunderous celebration and fans waved their white rally towels as Halladay was mobbed at the mound and hugged by his teammates and coaches. It was Roy’s second no-hitter of the season and the first at the Bank. I have never gotten so many high-fives and slaps on the back from fans as I did that night. I was lucky enough to witness this piece of history because I am a hostess for the Philadelphia Phillies. Since the start of the 2009 season, I have been at almost every Phillies home game, including postseason games. I’ve seen incredible come-

from-behind walk-off wins, monstrous Ryan Howard home runs and numerous sellout crowds with enough energy to power the city. Recently, I worked opening weekend against the Houston Astros. In addition to the big wins the team got, one of the most memorable moments of the weekend took place on the second night. Cliff Lee was set to make his highly anticipated second debut as a Phillie. As the starting lineup was read, the crowd grew more and more restless. The moment the eighth hitter, Wilson Valdez’s, name was announced, the stadium erupted into cheers of adoration for Lee, thanking him for choosing Philadelphia over the New York Yankees or Texas Rangers. The cheers lasted until Lee
retreated into the dugout, but began again when he ran onto the field for the national anthem. I have never heard an ovation like that for any player in my time as a Phillies fan or employee. It was a special moment. While I do get to witness some pretty cool moments on the field, there is work to be done. As a hostess, I am responsible for not only showing people to their seats but also making sure everything in my section is running smoothly. While it is sometimes difficult dealing with the public, especially after alcohol has been consumed, I wouldn’t trade my job in for anything. One of our duties is distributing All-Star ballots to fans. It’s fun to hand them out and encourage people to vote for their favorite Phillies. In 2009, after getting voted onto the last spot on the All-Star Team, Shane Victorino came to our staff meeting to thank us for our hard work. Besides seeing all the home games, one of the best parts of my job is getting visits from friends and family. One game, my dad and cousin from Texas surprised me in the section I was working. At another game, my next-door neighbors came to say hello. It’s great to run into people I haven’t seen awhile, especially at such a great place like Citizens Bank Park. This season is sure to be a special one. Despite injuries and setbacks, the team is off to a great start. I can’t wait to be a part of what is shaping up to be an awesome season. See you at the ballpark!

Admission to see the popular Phillies comes at a premium By STEVE WOOD Courier-Post Staff
Given the success of the Phillies of late, it’s become harder to score tickets for games than to score runs against the team’s four ace pitchers. So much so that it may take some alternative methods if you want to see the Phillies. Desperate fans take desperate measures. “At this point with the Phils at Citizens Bank Park, you have to get your tickets on the secondary market,” says Craig Chenosky, owner of road-trip charter service Phils Fever. “If you’re lucky you might get some straggler tickets that they might have left.” John Weber, vice president of ticket sales and operations, has worked with the Phillies since 1987. He’s seen a Phillies renaissance arrive with Citizens Bank Park in 2004, drawing an average of 3.1
million fans into the ballpark each year since. He saw the Phillies sell 3.6 million tickets last year, and a record 123 consecutive sellouts. But he’s never seen anything like this. Even before Phillies ace Roy Halladay took the mound on opening day, the Phillies had sold more than 3.3 million tickets for the season. In their first six home games, the Phillies averaged 45,441 fans, more than their 45,027 average of 2010 and about 3,650 more than the average attendance by runner-up San Francisco Giants, who won the World Series last year. “We still have tickets remaining for the majority of our games this year,” Weber assures. “Some are standing-room only, some are scattered.” With the vast amenities and views surrounding its Ashburn Alley, Citizens Bank Park may be the best
place to stand in the Major League. Luckily, Weber says, the Phillies offer between 1,600 and 1,800 standing-room tickets, of which about 500 are held over to be sold the day of a game. “It varies,” Weber says. “If you’re the 560th person in line, you’re not going to get a ticket.” Weber says tickets for night games normally start selling at 4 p.m. “That’s another reason to arrive early at the game,” he says. But sometimes it’s best to get away. Luckily, the Phillies’ nearest neighbors are accommodating. The Washington Nationals, the New York Mets and Pittsburgh Pirates all have home series remaining against the Phillies and odds are seats will be available. A byproduct of being perennial doormats in payroll, win total and atten-
dance, the Pirates manage to keep their ticket prices low — like stuck in the ’80s low — offering bleacher seats for $9, baseline seats for $26 and clubbox seats for $47. And for the 300 miles and 5.5 hours you drive, the chances you’ll leave PNC Bank seeing a Phillies win during the June 3-5 series are pretty high. Tickets for Washington Nationals seats start at $10, including those behind Jayson Werth in right field. Washington hosts the Phillies for two three-game series: May 30 to June 1 and Aug. 19 to Aug. 21. And if you don’t feel like making the 140-mile drive yourself, the South Philadelphia charter service Phils Fever offers a sweet deal for the May 30 and Aug. 20 games. The $109 package includes a charter bus to and from Nationals Park, refreshments on the bus ride,

lower-level right-field seats and a fully catered tailgate featuring unlimited barbecue beef ribs, pulled-pork sandwiches and Miller Lite. Five buses and 321 Phillies fans made the trip during the first Nationals series, says Phils Fever owner Craig Chenosky. “If you want to sit in rightfield (of Citizens Bank Park), you’re not going to spend any less than ($70) on the secondary market,” he says. “But if you tailgate with us, you get a drive back and forth, suds on the way down for our package price of $109.” StubHub.com, the leading secondary marketer
and the official partner of Major League Baseball, is comprised of average fans who need to dump their tickets for one reason or another, as well as professional ticket brokers who hoard season tickets “because they know they’re gonna sell,” Chenosky says. “It’s become increasingly difficult to acquire tickets close to face value,” Chenosky says. “They’re going double value, triple value.” That’s not to mention the built-in surcharges that can add more than 40 percent to the final purchase price. Chenosky doesn’t mind paying more. “I’m down with it,” he says. “I know some people may be feeling the effects of the economy but the higher the price, the better the team. After living through two decades of MLB mediocrity, I don’t mind.” Unlike StubHub and other online resellers, Craigslist.com charges no extra fees.

Collectors snatch up items featuring favorite Phils By JULIE SHANNON For the Courier-Post
DIAMOND GEMS
The Philadelphia Phillies have been hot on and off the field. On the field, they are off to a sizzling start, boasting one of the best records in baseball. Off the field, their jerseys, autographed baseballs and other memorabilia are flying off the shelves. There’s no question this team has risen in popularity since winning the World Series in 2008. Between the dynamic pitching, an offense that consistently scores and that furry green creature that (almost) everyone loves, fans are smitten — and shelling out anywhere from $40 to $3,000 for one-of-a-kind memorabilia featuring players such as Ryan Howard, Chase Utley and Jimmy Rollins. But according to Brad Messenger of Brad’s Extra Innings in West Berlin, one player has dominated sales since he arrived in Philly. “The Phillies in general are obviously in demand, but (Roy) Halladay is the standout,” says Messenger. “When we got Cliff Lee we got interest in him and there still is, but not quite like Roy Halladay. “Once he pitched the perfect game (last season) and topped it off later on with the no-hitter, his demand just escalated. Anything that has Roy Halladay’s face on it (sells).” Messenger and Bill Eastburn, manager of BC Sports Collectibles in Deptford, also say that anything with the four aces — Halladay, Lee, Roy Oswalt and Cole Hamels — sells out in no

time. Halladay’s jersey was Major League Baseball’s third most-selling jersey in 2010, followed by Utley and Lee, respectively. Howard’s jersey was the 18th mostsold jersey. Lee is another fan favorite, and Eastburn notices much more interest in the Phillies this year partly because of Lee’s surprise return to Philly. “Especially with the NFL possibly having a lockout, people are spending more attention toward baseball,” he says. “Even in December when football was going on, there was still a ton of interest because of how much people loved Cliff Lee the first time (he played for the Phillies).” Interested in purchasing a baseball autographed by Lee? That’ll cost you $179.99 at BC Sports. How about a

The sports collectibles market is a hot one with a winning Phillies team. framed Roy Halladay autographed road jersey? A mere $900, but you’re too late. That sold out around Christmas, when people stocked up on anything they could grab, no matter what the price, says Eastburn. At Brad’s Extra Innings, the most expensive item someone has bought is a game-worn Cole Hamels jersey for just over $2,000. Let’s not forget about former players who are still big sellers today — Mike Schmidt, Pete Rose and Steve Carlton, who Messenger says are “constant sellers, especially around holidays and Father’s Day.” At his store, autographed Rose and Carlton baseballs sell for around $100 to $129, while Schmidt autographed baseballs are a
tad higher at $149. Inscriptions that indicate a ball is from a certain game, such as an All-Star Game, will boost the value. What might surprise some is which player’s sales have cooled off — Chase Utley. The popular second baseman can thank his knee injury for why his items aren’t hot sellers at the moment. “Everybody likes Chase, he’s a hard worker, and his things constantly sold, but his demand has slacked off now that he’s hurt,” says Messenger. “Once he gets back on their field, it will pick up where they left off. “When you’re in the limelight, like Halladay or Howard and they see you’re producing, people want, want, want.” Jeff Kaplan didn’t make
a conscious decision to start collecting memorabilia, but before he knew it, Phillies collectibles took over his room. “About seven years ago, I started attending Phillies
Phestival, collecting the bobbleheads at the stadium, and the next thing I knew, I had a pretty big collection,” says Kaplan, 25, of Voorhees. Pretty big, as in 125 Phillies bobbleheads, from old-school players including Schmidt and Greg Luzinski, to today’s players Utley and Shane Victorino. You’ll even find a few Pat Burrell and Mike Lieberthal collectibles in his eclectic selection. Kaplan says he finds good deals on eBay and Amazon.com, but doesn’t hesitate to spend extra money on one-of-a-kind items. He spent $215 for a Rollins bobblehead that was given out at Veterans Stadium in 2002. “They only made a few hundred of them and I knew they were extremely rare, so when I found it, I had to have it,” he says. But his most prized possession is a bat signed by every player on the 2008 World Series Championship team (except Pat Burrell and So Taguchi). He believes the bat could be worth up to $2,000 and with the last two autographs, it could easily jump to $4,000 or $5,000. “When you’re building a collection and you find that perfect item,” says Kaplan, “there’s no such thing as spending too much. For me, there’s probably no price too high to get the last two autographs on my bat.”

It’s kind of like wearing the red, white and blue, and representing the country. They want everyone to know where their allegience is.” Hayes never doubted Philadelphia as a baseball town, even during the low attendances of the late ’90s and early 2000s. “As far as the personali-

Hayes went on to play more than 1,000 games for the Phillies through 1991, compiling a .272 batting average with 124 home runs, 568 RBIs and 129 stolen bases. Hayes says of his injury. “I had never been hurt before in my professional career. It was hard to start under those circumstances.” The Phillies had traded the world for him and somehow the world rested on his shoulders. There was enough pressure being called on to bat behind Hall of Fame third baseman Mike Schmidt. “Being in my first year with a new team was tough to deal with,” Hayes said. “It was tough living up to everybody’s expectations. But I thought I did a pretty good job bouncing back there during the latter part

Hayes didn’t get off to the best start in his first year with the Phils, pulling his hamstring and landing on the disabled list. It wasn’t exactly the first impression Hayes had hoped to make after being the centerpiece of one of the most famous trades in team history, a five-for-one deal that sent Manny Trillo, George Vukovich, Jay Baller, Jerry Willard and Julio Franco to the Cleveland Indians. “It was a nightmare,”

And against the Pittsburgh Pirates, Hayes swatted two homers in a game to help the Phillies overcome a 10-run, first-inning deficit, leaving Pirate broadcaster Jim Rooker to eat his famous first-inning words: “If we lose this game, I’ll walk home.” However, his greatest satisfaction came from his performance against the San Francisco Giants in 1989, when he smacked three home runs and drove in six against his hometown team. Hayes rooted against the Giants again last autumn when they played — and upset — the Phillies in the National League Champi-

of the ’80s.”
Phillies today
His experience with high expectations allows him to empathize with Phillie acquisitions Cliff Lee (2009) and Roy Halladay (2010), each of whom face tremendous pressure after being dealt for multiple prospects. It also makes him appreciate their success that much more. “I was impressed but I really wasn’t surprised,” Hayes says. “Those guys were brought on over here with many successful years in the big leagues and quite a bit of experience under their belts. I walked in as the youngest player in the
clubhouse.” Schmidt, when asked to assess the stuff of the Phillies’ four aces in a recent New York Post interview, said “they’re not scary.” Hayes disagrees. “I think their numbers stand for themselves,” Hayes says. “I could . . . make assumptions but you never know until you’re in the box and you see the stuff . . . But Halladay, there’s not a lot of pitchers that would necessarily scare me, but when I watch the movement on his pitches . . . whew.” While many analysts liken the Phillies foursome to Atlanta’s ’90s arms of Greg Maddux, John Smoltz, Tom Glavine and Steve Avery, Hayes thinks the Philadel-
lefthanders . . . I could see managers today stacking their lineups with lefties against Glavine. You couldn’t do that against Hamels, Oswalt or Lee.”

"was that, Glavine, out of that group, was so nasty against righthanders, but
As good as the foursome is, Hayes questions the Phillies’ chances to win a championship without a healthy Chase Utley. “There’s no doubt they’re going to make the playoffs,” Hayes says. “But, to be honest with you, I really think they need to see Utley back in the lineup. I don’t know if that will happen anytime soon. I think everybody knows he’s going to put this staff over the top. I’m not sure, without him, they’re going to have the of-
fense to win a World Series.” Hayes is looking forward to his second year managing the Riversharks, whose season begins April 29. Along with winning in the present, Hayes has the same Major League dream he had 30 years ago. “My goal is to get back to the big leagues,” says Hayes, adding that he’d sign on to coach or manage in the minors. “I’m learning every year. I look back and think if I had managed first and then became a player, it would have been a lot more helpful. “There’s so many little things that you pick up and learn just by watching the game and teaching it to players.”

Vet offers room for nostalgia Ð sort of When Veterans Stadium was demolished in 2004, I was there — across the street in the bleachers at Edward Bok Technical School. Unlike most of the assembled crowd, I felt not a twinge of sadness or nostalgia for the place. The Vet was a toilet. Even though it was the ballpark at which I’d spent a great deal of my childhood — we both made our entrance into the world in the same month, April 1971 — the place was a monument to ’70s aesthetics. This was not a good thing. The place had AstroTurf over concrete that sent infielders fleeing to cities with real grass and dirt. Its concessions were basic as can be; chicken nuggets were exotic. Concourses were cavernous echo chambers with little personality. The stadium, built for utility, was cold and concrete and somehow sanitary and dirty at the same time. Visiting pitchers — and sometimes those from the home team — had to dodge drinks dropped from walkways 20 feet above the bullpens as they warmed up. However, the last few years at Citizens Bank Park have left me feeling an odd sort of longing for The Vet. Why would a gleaming, green and brick field of dreams elicit nostalgia for a repository of so many mediocre teams, a place that often had more rats and feral cats roaming its wideopen spaces than humans? And that’s just it. The Vet, unlike CBP, wasn’t crowded too often. I could, and often did, walk up to the box office on game day and buy tickets — cheap ones — and still get good seats. I never had to wait in a long line for a hot dog, because there weren’t any long lines at The Vet. In my single days, when I had plenty of disposable income to blow on my main vice (baseball), there were $5 bleacher seats and even free ones, if you didn’t mind missing an inning or two and flashed the guy at the turnstile a pretty smile. Consider that in 2010, the Phillies drew a total of 3,647,249 people to Citizens Bank Park. Yet in 2000, they drew just 1,612,679 people to a bigger facility. That’s a difference of 2,034,480 people, or 4,068,960 elbows jostling me for a Dollar Dog. One can’t just show up and expect to see a game anymore; a day at the park requires planning, sometimes months in advance. And it isn’t cheap: The only way
Phaedra Trethan
you can see a game for under $20 is to stand through the whole thing. According to the Phillies, more than 22 million fans have made their way into Citizens Bank Park since it opened in 2004 — and I’m pretty sure I’ve waited behind every one of them in one of those snaky, stanchioned lines in Ashburn Alley. The team estimates that 10,600 hot dogs, 4,000 cheesesteaks, 1,500 slices of pizza and 3,700 gallons of soda are sold per game. My preferred ballpark sandwich, sausage and peppers, is sold 2,500 times a game, along with 6,500 bottles of water, my beverage of choice. I’m not sure how many S&Ps they sold at The Vet, but I never had to wait for 2,500 other people to get theirs first. Over its last five years, annual attendance at The Vet averaged 1,819,647 people. CBP, over the last five years, has averaged 3,296,133 in annual attendance. CBP seats 43,647 people. According to various websites, The Vet could fit about 62,000 people, give or take, for baseball. That’s a lot more people cramming into a much smaller place — and they’re crowding out fans like me who suffered not only through The Vet’s many indignities, but through teams that were bad. Of course, Citizens Bank Park has a lot more to offer — better food, more choices, old-time baseball aesthetics with modern amenities, real grass, vendors and ushers who greet fans with a smile, smoke from Bull’s BBQ (rather than stale Marlboros) wafting across the ballfield. And then there’s that winning team, which, let’s face it, is the reason most of those newbies are at the ballpark. That, come to think of it, just might make up for having to fight the crowds and the traffic and the lines. As long as they’re winning, the more the merrier.
