Duration: 3 weeks, Session 1: 28th Sept (11.00-12.30) Session 2: 5th October Session 3: 12th October Aims: Explore the subject of shells through primary and secondary observations using a variety of media, techniques and processes including printmaking, and then produce a final, mixed media series of prints Objectives: Be able to use 2D mark-making techniques Be able to communicate design ideas using 2D visual communication techniques Be able to use formal elements in 2D visual communication. Week 1: (28th September) Step 1: Select a selection of shells to work from, place these on a coloured surface in an arrangement of your choice. Photograph them using your phone camera or a college camera. Try different arrangements and different colour backgrounds. Print these images off for next session, they must be no smaller than A5 (that’s half an A4 sheet of paper). (P1, M2, D1) Step 2: Diploma in Art & Design level 2

Following directions, begin to draw your shell-scape within your sketchbook. You will be producing a series of timed drawings experimenting with different media and techniques. Step 3: Remembering what mark making techniques we have explored use a variety of media to produce an A2 observational drawing of your chosen composition. Explore the formal elements of form, texture, line, colour, scale and tone through the combination of materials and mark – making techniques. (P1, P2, M1, M2, D1, D2) Step 4: Write a short evaluation about what you have done in your journal.(P3, M3, D3) What have you done? What techniques have you used? What is successful? What are you thinking of doing next? Homework Research artists given below on the internet and in books and bring your found images to your next session, please make a note of the work and the artist who created it. Through researching you may come across other artists work that you like – gather this visual information too! Research shell images too and bring them to your next session (P2, M2, D2) Week 2: (5th October)

Preparation: You must bring with you for this session: Artist research Shell images found from the internet Your photographs of shells

Step 1: Using the images you have found and the photographs you have taken produce a series of monoprints Try: single colour, different layers of colours, colour, tissue and collage back grounds, water to dilute the ink etc (P1, P2, M1, M2, D1, D2) Step 2: Write a short evaluation consider: What have you done? What techniques have you used? What artists work that you have researched did you like? What is successful? Do you like what you have done? What are you thinking of doing next? (P3, M3, D3)

Week 3: (12th October)

Preparation: You must bring with you for this session: Your photographs of shells Your prints

Step 1: Using the shells, follow the following non traditional printing processes: (P1, P2, M1, M2, D1, D2) Clay: imbed your shells within the surface and remove, they will leave an impression – gently roller ink on the surface and take a series of prints. Wax: push your shells into the wax again they will leave an impression – take a series of prints. Step 2: Once all your printing is completed, scan the prints onto the Macs and try manipulation to produce a series of images. These will be your final outcomes. (P1, P2, M1, M2, D1, D2) Step 3: Mount your finished prints and final outcomes (P2, M2, D2) Step 4: Write a short final evaluation about what you have done.(P3, M3, D3) Outcomes: Sketch book studies A2 painting mounted on A1 paper A1 sheet mounted mono prints A1 sheet mounted Clay prints A1 sheet mounted clay prints A1 sheet mounted final images (produced from the Macs) Suggested Reading/ Research: Artists/ Designers: Cy Twombley, Matthew Ritchie, Dan Perjovschi Books: Look at General art books in the library and begin finding artists that you like and keep a note in your sketchbook / journal. You could even start to build a bank of artists and images that interest you in your file. Vitamin D – New Perspectives in Drawing. This is in the Library! Lots of yummy, scrummy art to get your creative juices flowing. Resource Requirements: Full Art box. You need as a group to source your materials appropriate to your design.
