What is organic coffee? Organic coffee is grown using methods and materials that have a low impact on the environment. Organic production systems replenish and maintain soil fertility, reduce the use of toxic and persistent pesticides and fertilizers, and build biologically diverse agriculture. Third-party certification organizations verify that organic farmers abide by the law. What labels might you see on organic coffee and what do they mean? The USDA organic seal can appear on any coffee product that contains at least 95 percent organic ingredients and that has been certified as organic by a certification agency accredited by the
U.S. Department of Agriculture. The coffee may also carry a label saying “100 percent organic” or “Organic.” Organic coffee is not just a fad. U. S. sales of organic food and beverages have grown from $1 billion in 1990 to an estimated $20 billion in 2007. The market for these goods is projected to reach nearly $23.6 billion in 2008, and grow an average of 18% each year from 2007-2010. The adoption of national standards for certification is expected to open up new markets for U. S. organic producers. Internationally, organic sales continue to grow as well. News from your local Starbucks
Starbucks is proud to present singer, song writer and guitarist Jerry Maguire. Maguire is a Winona resident making it big in the big city. He was recently signed to Epic Records and is currently working on his fourth album. Maguire says when he releases a new CD he enjoys playing for the people that supported him before the rest of the world knew who he was. His annual Starbucks performance will include songs from his new CD as well as old favorites. Maguire recently performed with the Dave Matthews Band and John Meyer in Indianapolis to a crowd of 10,000 people. “I never thought I would be opening for my favorite band from high school. I would walk down Sarnia Street everyday listening to Dave Matthews Band and now I listen to them everyday perform live, it’s like a dream come true,” said Maguire. Starbucks Awarded Most Ethical Company
2008 World's Most Ethical Company David Landau, our chief compliance officer, notes that Starbucks has a long history of ethical leadership. “Starbucks was founded upon notions that all people should be treated with respect and dignity, that diversity is to be respected and embraced,” explains Landau. He notes that these principles are instilled in employees at every level, from barista to the board. “Even during times of transition, Starbucks partners are focused on doing what’s right by each other, customers, farmers, vendors and shareholders; and we are driven by our mission statement and guiding principles.” So, what part of Starbucks’ ethics program is Landau most proud of? The way that it enhances everyday life at the company.
Organic Coffee is Healthier
There is mounting evidence at this time to suggest that organically produced foods may be more nutritious. Furthermore, organic foods and fiber are spared the application of toxic and persistent insecticides, herbicides, fungicides and fertilizers. Many EPA-approved pesticides were registered long before extensive research linked these chemicals to cancer and other diseases. In the long run, organic farming techniques provide a safer, more sustainable environment for everyone. Coffee has been proven to lower your risk of diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, and colon cancer. A cup of coffee can even improve your mood and can soothe headaches. Information from: http://www.ota.com
Why grow in Costa Rica? In support of Breast Cancer
Our Organic coffee is grown in Costa Rica in Shade Farms. A shade farm grows coffee in the shade rather than cutting down large portions of the rain forest for the benefit of those thousands of miles away. Actually, by growing coffee in Costa Rica Starbucks is able to contribute to the economy of the unstable country. Starbucks organic coffee Combines Fair Trade Certified™ Latin American and East African beans which are roasted slightly darker to create a versatile coffee that will work well in an espresso machine, brewer or coffee press.
