urban infill This design was a renovation and addition to an existing building. Using the current foundation (assuming that they are structurally sound) I added a second and third story to the building to allow for two family residences. The existing facade had a facelift that added both a second and third story along with some historical influence from the area.

side-yard house This design aimed to provide a comfortable, family friendly home on a narrow lot. The upper two stories are both part of the main house. The basement is designed as a rentable apartment.

This Side-Yard House was designed in a way that allows the basement to act as a self sufficient apartment.

The upper two floors make up the primary owner’s house. The house demonstrates a basic Colonial design where a guest is welcomed by a central staircase. The more public areas reside on the first floor and the second floor is reserved for private rooms, such as bedrooms.

church & community center This project challenged me to address an atypical block with a complete redesign. The property is a triangular block adjacent to the St. Joseph River in Niles, Michigan. The goal was to introduce a space that would draw the community together, to one plaza. I emphasized a connection to the St. Joseph River, which is currently being neglected, and have introduced many small spaces to draw people for both solitude (church garden) and for community (plaza).

hotel & conference center The design for this Hotel and Conference center was rooted in the concept of an artists’ community. The program for this design required a hotel that could accommodate guests and tourists while they visit the beautiful city of St. Joseph, Michigan. It includes an exhibition space due to the artistic culture of the area. The building is designed to be somewhat of a contemplative piece of art itself, a unique structure when compared to those around it, but one that reflects the sky and all that surrounds it as a way to blend in.

about the project The hotel surrounds a 7 story atrium with large windows towards the top, allowing the sunlight to penetrate the space. Located above the atrium are 8 suites on an exclusive 8th floor, with the best views of the town. The parking lot is located underground to limit the amount of asphalt on the surface of the property in an attempt to cool it during the hot summers. Each floor is shaded by large louvers that extend beyond the building. As part of this project a unique mechanical system was integrated via a double skin curtain wall. Air is drawn from outside and chilled or heated by tubes of water to a moderate temperature of around 50 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter and 80 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer. From there, each room has a PTAC unit that draws from the air inside the airspace and cools or heats the room to the guest’s desired temperature. Vents at the top of the air space allow for air to escape and create a draft drawing in fresh air.

overlay zoning proposal During the fall of 2013 the students of the Architectural Masters program at Andrews University had the opportunity to propose an overlay zoning district for Oronoko Township and the Village of Berrien Springs, Michigan. The overlay zoning proposed a form based code that emphasized how each building addresses the street, and how it addresses adjacent buildings rather than the typical use based zoning. The result was a final proposal with several property case studies of how the proposed zoning could enhance the culture and character of the area as well as be profitable to those currently living and working in both the Village of Berrien Springs and Oronoko Township. The proposed overlay zoning code was officially accepted on February 1, 2014. I personally worked primarily on the building code which was based off of the Smart Code.
