A Few Words From The Founder

This Winter, Cousins Furniture are excited to introduce to you some of their new collections and innovative ideas to help get you inspired.

Over the past 12 months we have been busy building inspirational new departments, introducing many exciting new brands, whilst continuing to showcase the very latest collections in home interiors and innovation. In this Winter issue, Cousins will introduce you to the seasons top picks, new ranges for 2023 and helpful articles ranging from recycling your old Christmas tree to finding the perfect mattress for a top quality night’s sleep.

In living, We have enhanced our collections with famous brand names such as G Plan and Parker Knoll, to comply with modern living.

In dining, recent trends for open-plan, flexible living, especially around the kitchen, has led to a significant increase in Kitchen Dining. Cousins are proud to display new collections from world leading Italian brand Calligaris across dining tables, sideboards and even accessories to complete the look.

For the bedroom, we have introduced new collections from Ercol, showcased in brand new galleries. Our very own Cousins Bespoke collection has grown substantially, now including made-to-measure bedroom furniture and cabinets.

At Cousins Furniture, the destination showrooms have a wide range of furniture and accessories that will suit any style home from traditional through to contemporary.

We would like to thank all of our customers, returning and new and we would like to welcome all those who are yet to come and experience Cousins for the first time.

Is there anything better- during winter - than curling up on the sofa with a snug blanket and a cup of warming hot chocolate in front of your favourite movie? The nights are drawing in, so let us help you recreate your perfect snug evening in a home you love.

Step 1: The Movie

Picking the perfect movie for your ultimate movie night is the key to setting the scene. Whether it’s a good laugh to warm your cheeks or a terrifying horror to have you hiding behind the sofa cushions its really up to you. Whatever you choose, dim the lights and try lighting various candles around your lounge to really create a cosy atmosphere.

Step 2: The Snacks

Having friends over? Why not set up a DIY hot chocolate station with whipped cream, marshmallows and chocolate sprinkles for a fun activity before the movie starts. It’s the details that make all the difference, why not pick up some popcorn bags to serve some fresh popcorn to munch on!

Step 3: Cosy up!

The chillier nights are fast approaching, and we understand that with energy bills going up, we’re all trying our best to find ways to save money, that’s where step 3 comes in!

Grab blankets, throws and even the duvet off your bed if you like, layer blankets below you as well as on top and add as many throw cushions as you like to cuddle up against for a truly snug feel. Put on your favourite fluffy socks and even grab the hot water bottle if you’re feeling extra chilly.

In lives dominated by work and technology, a responsibility-free afternoon or even 5 minutes quiet time is a luxury that everyone deserves. If we dedicate a space in our homes to peaceful activities such as reading, it can serve as a reminder to slow down and take time for selfcare.

Reading has been shown to strengthen your brain, help prevent age-related cognitive decline, reduce stress and can prepare you for a good night’s sleep.

A special place in your home will allow you to curl up with a good book and escape for a few hours. Keeping the following tips in mind, you can create a cosy reading nook for you and your family.

You don’t necessarily need a whole room to be dedicated to reading. A reading corner can be almost anywhere that you want it to be in your home. It can be a quiet corner of your lounge, dining room or bedroom.

You could make the use of a window seat, an attic space, a hallway that is seldom used or even in a cupboard under the stairs.

Anywhere can be utilised as your reading corner – you just need to make it into the perfect place where you can relax.

The perfect reading chair should be one that you can sit in for long periods of time and will provide good support for your neck, back and arms. A large chair enables you to move about whilst remaining comfortable. Your chair, ideally, should be supportive, substantial and durable. Sufficient lumbar support is particularly important especially if you are sitting for extended time frames.

Many reading chairs have large arms that are big enough to rest a book on. Oversized chairs with deep seats are the ultimate in comfort and can be dressed to provide even more cosiness. Whether you decide on fabric or leather is entirely up to you.

A chaise is a great option –you can really unwind while reading- as is a snuggler chair or a recliner chair. Each of these will help to raise your comfort levels and allow you to spend your free time in relaxation.

Re-purpose your old Christmas Tree.

1. Replant it.

Environmental Charity Greenpeace encourages people to pot their Christmas trees after use. Although the branches may already be drooping, you’ll be surprised at their ability to recover if planted in a pot of soil and left to establish.

2. Recycle it.

The simplest way to dispose of your old Christmas tree is to recycle it. Many garden centres are happy to take old trees and they will turn them into wood chippings to help other gardens.

Upcycle it.

Pine trunks are often used as home decor in the form of candle holders, coasters, placemats etc. Why not try making your own this year with your old tree.

4. Help out nature.

Christmas trees make fantastic mulch. Mulching has a nmber of benefits, when placed around the base of your garden trees or shrubs, it can help treat compaction and prevent soil erosion that often happens after heavy rain.

5. Build a home for wildlife.

Winter can be tough for small animals who have to cope with all the elements it throws at them. Why not secure your old tree in the corner of your garden offering shelter and protection.

It is imperative that we all get the best possible night’s sleep that we can. Sometimes this is easier said than done but there are several ways that you could try to improve the quality of your sleep. What works for one person may not work for another so usually finding what works for you is through trial and error.

Advice for a Better Night’s Sleep from our Expert Debbie

If you are someone who suffers from stress-induced sleep problems, then taking the time to relax before you go to bed may help, whether this is by having a warm bath or writing a to-do list before bed to help clear your mind.

• Begin a new routine- your body has a natural time-keeping clock that allows you to programme your body to naturally fall asleep and wake up. Maybe try to go to bed at a set time and to get up at the same time every morning.

• Avoid technology which emits a blue light. The sleep hormone melatonin is suppressed by the blue light so try to avoid using technology for about an hour before bed.

• Create the right environment. Ensuring that your bed gives the correct support and comfort means you will move about less.

Maintaining a cool temperature may also improve your night’s sleep- keeping your bedroom at a cool temperate will also help in maintaining a good sleep pattern

• Cutting down on alcohol, spicy foods, sugary foods and caffeine will improve the quality of your sleep.

• Getting enough natural daylight and exercise during the day will help in the production of melatonin, the hormone that promotes sleep.

• Having a darkened room will help- having lights or lamps that have a dimmer switch are a great option that will help you to feel sleepier.
