Cambridge Science Park What is a Science Park? A Science Park is a collection of high-technology industrial companies or research institutes in attractive, well-landscaped surroundings, developed to a very low density, situated near a major scientific university – and enjoying significant opportunities of interchange with that university. It is a means of bringing suitable industry and applied research close to the sources of scientific progress.
Features of the Cambridge Science Park •
Established in 1970 by Trinity College, the college of Sir Isaac Newton and many other distinguished scientists
•
Close links with the scientific excellence of Cambridge University
•
Low-density development in a park-like setting
•
Over 80 compatible neighbours also involved in high technology
•
High-quality, flexible buildings suited to office, laboratory or manufacturing use
•

Use clause
To preserve the intrinsic nature of the Cambridge Science Park for the mutual benefit of all occupiers, the use of buildings is limited to the following: •
Scientific research associated with industrial production
•
Light industrial production which is dependent on regular consultation with the tenants’ own research, development and design staff established in the Cambridge area; or the scientific staff of the University or of local scientific institutions
•
Ancillary activities appropriate to a Science Park
Availability of land and buildings •
152 acres; premises from 500 sq ft to 120,000 sq ft
•
Purpose-built units on occupational leases
•
Smaller units for smaller companies, or bases for larger companies to research the market, on flexible leases
•
Innovation Centre offering smaller, flexible facilities for new hi-tech ventures
Introduction By Rory Landman, Senior Bursar, Trinity College, Cambridge The Cambridge Science Park was established principally to meet government requests for a greater interchange of ideas, people and facilities between universities and high-technology industry. Such an interchange serves to strengthen existing companies and encourage the development of new ones; and it provides technical and financial feedback to the University. Close contact of this kind brings other benefits including: •
Improvement of existing technology – an abundance of local scientific expertise helps industry to overcome problems with existing advanced technology.
•
Spreading of ideas – new advanced technology and ideas can best be promoted by personal contact, sometimes between those working in quite different fields.
•
Employment – companies find it easier to recruit qualified staff of all kinds, while job opportunities are widened for University graduate and non-graduate staff.
•
Recognition of commercial potential – University departments can learn at first hand the problems and aspirations of hightechnology industry. Moreover, this feedback will help in the spotting of commercial potential in the fountain of new scientific ideas which flow in a great University-potential which might otherwise go unrealised.
•
Generating prosperity – the economic squeeze of recent years, particularly on research, has underlined the need to generate prosperity through successful commercial development of scientific ideas. The squeeze has also emphasised the value of sharing expensive equipment and libraries which in turn can lead to useful personal contacts.
Rory Landman
From concept... It was in the late 1960s that Whitehall urged universities to increase their contact with high-technology industry. A Cambridge University Committee, with Sir Nevil Mott (then Cavendish Professor of Experimental Physics) as chairman and Dr Ian Nichol (later Secretary General of the Faculties) as secretary, was appointed to consider the local position. They recommended a moderate expansion of “science-based industry” close to Cambridge to take maximum advantage of the concentration of scientific expertise, equipment and libraries - on an international as well as national scale - and to increase feedback of all kinds from such industry into the Cambridge science complex. Trinity College was impressed with the importance of the idea. It has a long scientific tradition from Newton onwards - including in the past 100 years ClerkMaxwell, Rayleigh, J J Thomson, Rutherford, Aston and Lyle, together with numerous living scientists. It already possessed a suitable site on the outskirts of the city and so it began to formulate the scheme which led to the Cambridge Science Park. The majority of the land has belonged to the College for more than a century - and most of it to them or their predecessors since 1443. During the Second World War about half the land was requisitioned and covered with railway sidings and concrete bases for marshalling British and American army tanks for D-Day and for repairing them subsequently. The first of the current lakes was a gravel pit at the time.
...to reality
The right location
Outline planning permission for the first 14 acres of the Cambridge Science Park was sought in April 1970 and granted in October 1971. The first detailed permissions were received in early 1973, and construction of roads, services and the first building for Laser-Scan began in April 1973.
The Cambridge Science Park’s position at Milton Road has proved a prime location. It offers good building land without significant physical problems; is close to major residential areas yet well separated from them; and has excellent communications via the A14 northern bypass and the M11 and M25.
Subsequent buildings have been added almost every year since then, and the College wishes to acknowledge the sympathetic consideration given to its proposals by the Local Authorities, the Department of the Environment and the Department of Trade and Industry, together with the helpful interest of many individuals. The Park was officially opened in 1975 by Sir Alan Hodgkin, then President of the Royal Society and later Master of Trinity. He was assisted by Lord Butler, then Master, and by Lord Adrian, formerly Master. HRH The Prince of Wales opened the Cambridge Consultants building in 1979 and the 3i complex in 1984. Since its opening the Park has been visited several times by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, Chancellor of the University, and by Government Ministers and other important visitors worldwide. Over the years, development of the Cambridge Science Park has gathered momentum, both from the expansion of existing Cambridge Science Park companies and from the attraction of new businesses. It was extended to 30 acres in 1975; to 58 acres by the addition of the Napp site in 1979; to 86 acres in 1982; to 110 acres in 1985. Cambridge Science Park today covers 130 acres of low-density development, with a further 22 acres of Trinity Hall land on Phase 6 partially developed. To date more than 1,510,830 sq ft of buildings have been constructed, let and occupied.
The right environment From very early on, the College and its advisers had clear ideas of what constituted a Science Park, namely that it should be a collection of high-technology industrial companies or research institutes in attractive, well-landscaped surroundings, developed to a very low density, situated near a major scientific university - and enjoying significant opportunities of interchange with that university. The Cambridge Science Park is just that. It contains more than 100 companies covering a wide range of high technology. Some are new hi-tech ventures, with just two workstations in the Innovation Centre; some are small companies whose Science Park premises contain their entire activities; while others are branches of large national or international organisations who recognise that the scientific excellence of the Cambridge area provides a favourable environment for development of a particular sector of their activities, or for establishing a “listening post. Toshiba, in particular, have established an important joint venture with the University Department of Physics in quantum effect physics, a field of fundamental research which is expected to lead to the frontier technologies of the 21st century. When Kodak drew up their shortlist for the location of their European Research Division, they specifically wanted a top-class, world-renowned university close by. Kodak moved onto the Park in April 2006 and immediately established collaborative ventures with a number of start-ups and investors.
Flexible approach
Facilities and benefits
Occupiers of the Cambridge Science Park are helped to become established in well-designed flexible buildings on landscaped sites developed at low density (one sq ft of buildings to five/six sq ft of land).
Cambridge Science Park’s facilities and benefits have developed as the Park has grown in size. Facilities and benefits available to occupiers today are:
During the past few years, large national and international companies have expanded or moved to new Cambridge Science Park premises. In addition, the Cambridge Science Park Innovation Centre has greatly helped smaller companies to establish and grow by providing secure, furnished workspace to more than 30 occupiers at the heart of the Science Park. Leases provide maximum flexibility for growth and movement within the Park.
Promoting contacts The College plays an active role in promoting contacts of all kinds - with University laboratories, with various other local research institutions, and with other Cambridge Science Park companies. As the occupiers of the Park now include major contract researchers, venture capitalists, patent agents and numerous companies with worldwide export experience, there are great opportunities for productive interchange. The College has never insisted on University contacts being established, but has created an environment in which liaison takes place naturally when the need arises and with mutual benefit. This is encouraged through: • • •
Close proximity to the scientific excellence of Cambridge University Close links with network groups providing knowledge and expertise Over 80 compatible neighbours also involved in high technology.
• • • • • • • •
The Trinity Centre, providing bar, restaurant and conference facilities ‘Revolution’ health, fitness and beauty centre Squash courts 115-place on-site day nursery Cash machine Cambridge Science Park Directory of tenants Free vacancy, news and profile advertising on Cambridge Science Park website Catalyst - Cambridge Science Park magazine profiling occupier developments
Transport links Cambridge Science Park aims to be at the forefront of promoting green travel and car-sharing programmes. The College works closely with the local council and travel groups to encourage and support opportunities for greener travel. The Cambridgeshire Guided Busway, due to open in 2009, will provide frequent, reliable public transport along the A14 corridor, linking Huntingdon and St Ives to central Cambridge, with two stops at Cambridge Science Park.
Reaping benefits Cambridge Science Park is a world-famous research centre and hot-bed of hi-tech enterprise. The majority of Cambridge Science Park companies benefit greatly from the personal, technical, financial or less tangible kinds of liaison which the environment promotes, while at the same time, a valuable commercial awareness continues to develop within the University. The concept of the Cambridge Science Park is, in fact, becoming ever more exciting as the number and variety of occupiers grows and its original aims are realised. Rory Landman

Founded in 1998 by Dr Bruce Roser, CBL has developed a revolutionary technology which formulates vaccines and other biopharmaceuticals into ready-to-inject stable liquid suspensions requiring no refrigeration or reconstitution. CBL’s Stable Liquid Vaccine technology offers significant advantages over existing vaccines by eliminating the requirement for the cold chain and reducing the cost of administration of vaccines, thereby increasing both the shelf life and the effectiveness of vaccines in the field. The company has filed seven patent families worldwide and has a number of development programmes underway both internally and with external collaborators. CBL has also entered into a joint venture with Panacea Biotec, India’s second largest pharmaceutical company, to develop and bring to market a pentavalent childhood vaccine that can be stored without refrigeration. This will be used for childhood vaccination programmes in the developing world. CBL is also working with US Government agencies to develop a stable multivalent vaccine against botulism and a stable anthrax vaccine.

Cambridge Medical Innovations (CMI) is dedicated to developing a series of diagnostic devices that will help in the diagnosis of diseases and enable the more efficient monitoring of human health. Our mission is to develop the diagnostic devices to be sold worldwide. The company is located in Cambridge, UK. Our technology is based on robust label-free diagnostic systems exploiting high frequency acoustics to specifically diagnose disease. The systems can directly detect a range of molecules, bacteria and viruses in both crude samples and complex matrices without the need for sample processing or purification. This is achieved by attaching a specific target receptor to the surface of an acoustic resonator, using one of a variety of coupling chemistries, followed by delivery of a sample via a microfluidic flow-based system. The resonant acoustic signal indicates not only the presence of target molecules but also the amount found in any sample.

Domantis is a drug discovery company that develops therapies based on domain antibodies, the smallest antigen-binding fragment of human antibodies. Building on the protein and antibody research of its founders, Dr Greg Winter and Dr Ian Tomlinson, Domantis is focused on commercialising this new class of fully human molecules. Domain antibodies (“dAbs) are a new generation of antibody molecules that incorporate the biological and commercial advantages of both small molecules and antibodies. They have the potential to provide a broader range of products and benefits compared with conventional antibodies, because they can address a wide range of therapeutic targets, are suited to multiple product formats and formulations, have potential for delivery by injectable and non-injectable methods, and can be made by lower-cost microbial manufacture. Due to its unique and exclusive intellectual property and technology position for domain antibodies, Domantis is the only company capable of fully exploiting human dAbs for therapeutic and other applications. Domantis scientists are using well-established antibody repertoire technology to discover domain antibodies which address validated therapeutic targets. Since its launch in December 2000, the company has made considerable progress, and the first dAb-led compound is now in preclinical studies. Domantis aims to identify a series of dAb leads with unique therapeutic formats and formulations that cannot be achieved with conventional antibodies. The company plans to develop a number of these leads in-house and enter into partnerships to advance others.

KuDOS Pharmaceuticals, a wholly owned subsidiary of AstraZeneca plc, holds a leading position in the discovery and development of drugs based upon the science of DNA damage sensing, signalling and repair to address unmet medical needs in cancer treatment. KuDOS develops potent and highly selective small molecule therapies that block DNA repair in cancer cells, making tumours more vulnerable to the fatal DNA-disrupting effects of both radiotherapy and chemotherapy. In certain situations these therapies may exhibit a stand-alone effect. Such small molecules promise a significant breakthrough in cancer management, particularly in therapyresistant tumours, which commonly occur and contribute greatly towards poor prognosis. KuDOS was established in 1997 by Professor Stephen Jackson, Cancer Research UK and the University of Cambridge. The company retains strong links with Professor Jackson’s laboratory, ensuring that it remains at the forefront of DNA repair research. KuDOS has an integrated drug discovery process including computational, combinatorial and medicinal chemistry capabilities. This complements KuDOS’s biology and clinical expertise to create a continuous and effective R&D Pipeline. In February 2006 KuDOS was acquired by AstraZeneca plc.

Phogen is a private biotechnology company, established in 1997 as a joint venture by Xenova Group plc (which acquired Cantab Pharmaceutical Research Ltd in April 2001) and Marie Curie Cancer Care, both of the UK, with the aim of developing and commercialising drug delivery and gene therapy based on the cellular trafficking properties of the protein VP22.
Dr Michael Moore – Chairman Dr Elizabeth Rollinson – Managing and Commercial Director Ms Claire Newton – Director
Phogen has scientists based at the Marie Curie Research Institute at Oxted in Surrey and business offices on the Cambridge Science Park. The proprietary technology, VP22, is a novel drug delivery system that overcomes the limitation of intracellular delivery to introduce molecules into cells and cell nuclei. Phogen intends to use this technology to develop therapeutic products in-house and through corporate collaborations, such as the $21m licence agreement with Genencor in 2001 for certain DNA vaccine targets. In addition, Phogen will out-license VP22 technology in specific areas; for example, the rights to develop and sell kits to the research reagent market have been licensed to Invitrogen. Phogen’s strategy for exploitation of VP22 is to develop high-value products for treatment and prevention of human diseases. Clinical targets include cancer, cardiovascular and neurological disorders and infectious diseases. Specific product candidates will be created by in-licensing therapeutic cargoes and by alliances with academia. Phogen was founded in 1997. Moved in

Polatis, based on the Cambridge Science Park, continues research into optical switching technologies. It has established a new performance benchmark for optical switches, based on patented DirectLight technology. This is being applied to create a non-blocking Direct Beam Steering (DBS) architecture, which points input and output fibres at each other, providing ultra low loss connections. Alongside its flagship 16x16 single mode switch, Polatis is developing a range of products including 32x32 single mode, 16x16 multimode, instrumentation switches with monitored attenuation control, customer reconfigurable versions and small card-based switches. Polatis Ltd and Continuum Photonics merged in 2005 to form Polatis Inc. The company now has facilities in both Cambridge, UK and Boston, Massachusetts, US.

ERBI (Eastern Region Biotechnology Initiative)
University of Cambridge Programme for Industry
ERBI was established in 1997 with a grant for three years from the DTI. As a networking organisation for Cambridge and the East of England, our original goal was to provide a platform for biotechnology and related companies to meet and interact through attending regular meetings and an annual conference.
The Cambridge Programme for Industry (CPI) provides executive learning programmes and learning services internationally. Our expertise lies in understanding how people learn and in the development of learning processes that can help restructure systems and influence attitudes in ways that will move society towards sustainability. We work closely with academic and other partners, and our work is underpinned by practical applications of research. Our programmes draw on world-class contributors from academic, policy and practitioner circles, and active alumni networks provide a vehicle for ongoing debate and activity.
In 2000, ERBI became a self-financing, membership-based company. With a Board and Steering Group made up of representatives from all walks of the bio-community and over 290 subscribing members, ERBI is currently Europe’s leading regional bio industry group. Since 2000, ERBI has gone from strength to strength. Our range of activities has broadened to cover many aspects of facilitating and accelerating the growth of biotech in Cambridge and the East of England. We run a range of special interest groups for our full members including purchasing, human resources, finance, security, business development and corporate governance. We publish a bi-annual survey of trends in the regional biotech industry and provide consultancy to national and international government departments. Our annual conference now attracts in the order of 450 delegates, and our evening networking meetings are attended by over 100 registrants.
CPI is a non-profit, self-financing organisation within the University. Our work supports the mission of the University of Cambridge, which is to contribute to society through the pursuit of education, learning and research at the highest international levels of excellence.
Tel: +44 (0)1223 342100 www.cpi.cam.ac.uk
In April 2002, we assumed responsibility for promoting the region as a location for biotech companies when Invest East of England, in partnership with EEDA, sub-contracted delivery of the region’s inward investment strategy for biotechnology to ERBI. At that stage, we also increased our focus on facilitating partnering and collaboration. To this end, we host high-profile delegations from overseas seeking partners in the region; we attend the major bio conferences such as Bio in the States, Bio Vision/Bio Square in Europe and Bio Japan; and we run partnering days in the region for major pharma and the larger biotechs. We are also regularly invited to make presentations about the region at international meetings and we have well-established relationships with bio industry groups overseas such as MassBio (Boston) in the US and Bio M (Munich) in Europe.
