Bridge End Garden: Client: Uttlesford District Council and English Heritage Location: Saffron Walden, Essex Historic landscape consultant: Debois Landscape Survey Group Brief Originally designed as a private Victorian garden, Bridge End Garden is now a popular and well-used public park close to the historic centre of Saffron Walden. When Uttlesford District Council and English Heritage planned to restore the garden and address the problems of neglect and vandalism, they invited LiZLaKe to help. Approach We were employed to prepare a full historic landscape survey and a costed conservation management plan. Our findings contributed to a submission to the Heritage Lottery Fund. Outcome This work contributed to the council's successful submission for significant external funding with a grant of ÂŁ387,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund and ÂŁ150,000 from other bodies. We have subsequently prepared proposals for the walled garden which has also received a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Close Garden: Client: Saffron Walden Town Council Location: Saffron Walden, Essex Landscape Contractor: SSG Landscape Construction Ltd Brief Previously the site of a Tudor timber framed building, Close Garden is a small walled garden located in close proximity to the historic centre of Saffron Walden and within the heart of the conservation area. The garden is enclosed by listed walls and is within the setting of a Grade 1 listed church. The garden was difficult to access, was unwelcoming due to over shading and was subject to nuisance activity consequently it was an underused public space. The brief was to devise a solution that would meet DDA regulations, make the garden more welcoming to visitors and at the same time be sensitive to the historic setting. Naturally all this needed to be achieved within a tight budget. Approach Working closely with Saffron Walden Town Council, Friends of Close Garden and Uttlesford District Council Access Officer, LiZLaKe identified that paths required resurfacing and access to the garden required improvement. In addition existing over mature vegetation was identified for removal to open up views to the church, improve light levels within the garden and give the garden a greater presence on the street scene. There were significant challenges as a result of marked changes in levels between the garden and the surrounding footways and this was solved with the inclusion of sensitive ramps and steps. Outcome The design solution opened up Close Garden both physically and visually. As well as providing access to the garden itself the improvements have created a new, attractive and accessible route to the Church. Existing materials were reused where possible; the project tendered and brought in within budget. The results have been greatly appreciated by local people and the Town Council and the garden itself now has a greater presence in the town. LiZLaKe Chartered Landscape Architects | Urban Designers
Bushey Rose Garden: Client: Hertsmere Borough Council Location: Bushey, North London Conservation surveyor: Barker & Associates Historic landscape consultant: Kate Harwood Brief Bushey Rose Garden was created by the artist Hubert von Herkomer and designed by the British landscape architect Thomas Mawson. The Grade II registered garden is in a Conservation Area and contains several Grade II buildings, but has deteriorated over the years and suffered from vandalism. Our brief was to prepare a costed conservation management plan to accompany an application to the Heritage Lottery Fund. Approach Working with a conservation surveyor and landscape historian we identified the key features of the garden and developed proposals for restoration of all the Listed features, including a summer house and a pergola as well as the integration of new toilet facilities. Outcome The council was successful in getting a development grant for ÂŁ26,100 from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Big Lottery Fund. This means that it will be able to move forward with plans for a ÂŁ1 million scheme to transform and regenerate this much-loved park.

Capital Square: Client: Barratt Eastern Counties Location: Chelmsford, Essex Architect: PRP Architects Landscape Contractor: Oakview Landscapes Fountain Contractor: Miles Waterscapes Ltd Brief Capital Square is a mixed-use development of 108 luxury apartments, retail units, and a day care nursery, built around two landscaped courtyards. A Section 106 Agreement with the planning permission required a water feature within a mixed use urban square. The brief was to provide a calm space that would provide a communal area for residents as well as appealing to the wider community. The square is overlooked by the balconies and winter gardens of the surrounding apartments. Approach The western fountain courtyard provides a contemporary landscape space with seating to view feature fountains. The primary landscape objective for the site was to create a high quality, safe, fountain courtyard that was complementary to the surrounding architecture. Outcome The BALI Award adjudicators described Capital Square as a "stunning urban courtyard". The scheme is popular with residents and has won our client a number of prestigious national housing sector/landscape awards, including the What Housing Awards 2006 Gold Award for Best Landscape Design. Awards What Housing Awards 2006, Gold Award for Best Landscape Design Winner for Best Landscape Design, Your New Home Magazine Awards Silver Gilt Award for Best Landscaped Urban Development, Daily Express New Home Garden Awards BALI Award for mainly hard landscaping LiZLaKe Chartered Landscape Architects | Urban Designers
The Galleries: Client: Location: Architect: Engineer:
City & Country Residential Brentwood, Essex Brewster Bye Roberts Hay Partnership
Brief The Galleries is a former Victorian asylum, set within extensive grounds and situated in a prominent position in Brentwood in Essex. Being Grade ll Listed, its historic buildings comprise an important part of the local urban fabric. City & Country Residential recognised its potential and is currently converting the existing buildings into a high-quality, residential development incorporating 130 apartments. LiZLaKe was commissioned to develop conceptual design ideas for the external landscape. Approach A detailed survey was undertaken of all existing trees within the site and important trees, protected by Tree Preservation Orders, retained within the development design to enhance external spaces. A design strategy was then conceived to create a sensitive yet stunning landscape to surround the historic buildings. Outcome Important trees have been protected by Tree Preservation Orders and retained within the development design to enhance external spaces. The existing core buildings, combined with the new extensions and underground parking, have created eight courtyard spaces. The design philosophy was to give each courtyard a distinct character while maintaining a harmonious feel to the overall proposals. Two courtyards are to be restored close to the original historic design, while the remainder will be contemporary in style. Awards

Balkerne Star Park: Client: Location: Architect: Engineer:
Barratt Eastern Counties Colchester, Essex Stanley Bragg Mouchel Parkman
Brief LiZLaKe was commissioned by Barratt Eastern Counties to prepare detailed landscape proposals for a new urban development of 202 town houses and apartments at "Balkerne Heights" located just outside the Roman wall of the historic core of Colchester. Conditions of the outline planning permission were to create a "pocket park" as a high quality focal point of the main square in the centre of the development. Approach The central square is steeply sloping and the design intention was to work with this constraint positively to create a distinct space, with a "percentage for art" mosaic forming the focal point of the pocket park. Local artist Anne Schwegmann-Fielding was appointed with a brief to capture the Roman history of the area through the medium of mosaic. The concept for the Balkerne Star came from a mosaic pavement found nearby. Outcome The colour range for the mosaic chosen by the artist, is very simple, sienna, yellow ochre, green, blue and mushroom. It echoes not only the planting palette but the traditional Essex colours of the surrounding buildings. The result is an urban square with a strong sense of place. Awards Silver Award for the Best Communal Garden, Daily Express New Home Garden Awards

East Road, Wellhouse Green: Client: Location:
Mersea Homes Colchester, Essex
Brief LiZLaKe was commissioned by Mersea Homes to prepare landscape proposals for 2.9 hectares of residential development. Colchester Borough Council’s urban designers proposed that a pocket park should form a focal point within the development and our client responded positively in terms of its commitment to provide high-quality public open space. Our brief was to provide a calm space that would provide a communal garden for residents and the wider community. Approach LiZLaKe designed a semi-private communal pocket park which was located in the centre of the development site providing communal space for those properties which back onto it. Outcome The layout of the paths and seating areas, the repeated minimal palette of plant combinations, the species choice and positioning of trees, all combine to provide a sense of visual harmony and calm. The pocket park won the 2008 Colchester 2020 Sense of Place award. Awards Winner of the ‘Sense of Place’ category - Colchester 2020 & RIBA Architectural Awards

Albany Gardens: Client: Location: Architect:
Barratt Eastern Counties Colchester, Essex BDG Design (South) Ltd
Brief LiZLaKe was commissioned by Barratt Eastern Counties to prepare landscape proposals for a residential scheme of 211 new town houses and apartments. Colchester Borough Council’s urban designers proposed that a pocket park should form a focal point within the development and our client responded positively in terms of its commitment to provide high-quality public open space. Our brief was to provide a calm space that would provide a communal garden for residents and the wider community. Approach The curvilinear central path is part of a route that links the River Colne to the Distillery Pond open space. As such, the park provides an ‘island’ of public open space, set within a walkable neighbourhood, helping to integrate the development into the wider urban context. Outcome The layout of the paths and seating areas, the repeated minimal palette of plant combinations, the species choice and positioning of trees, all combine to provide a sense of visual harmony and calm. The pocket park won the 2005 Silver Gilt Award for Best Landscaped Urban Development in the Daily Express New Home Gardens Awards and has now been formerly Adopted by the Local Authority. Awards Winner for Best Landscape Design The Daily Telegraph – Your New Home Magazine Awards Silver Gilt Award – Best Landscaped Urban Development category Daily Express New Home Garden Awards Winner of the Urban Space category of the Local Government News Street Design Awards
