foreword >> The theme for this year’s 40-Day Prayer Journal is “Holy Spirit, fall afresh on me!” journey of believing God for revival, crying out to Him for it, and living a life of full surrender to Him is essentially the work of the Holy Spirit. The Word of God exhorts us to “be filled with the Spirit” (Ephesians 6:18). The Holy Spirit is constantly at work to revive individual hearts and renew His people in love and service. The Spirit delights for us to experience and enjoy the fragrance, freshness and fullness of spiritual revival. “And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.” (Acts 2:1–2) The sovereign work of the Spirit is often likened to the wind. There is a suddenness, surprise and sovereignty about the wind of God’s Spirit. G. Campell Morgan said,“We cannot organize revival, but we can set our sails to catch the wind from heaven when God chooses to blow upon His people once again.” There are three things we can pray for, believing that God will blow upon us: 1. Oneness of mind—“they were all with one accord in one place.” This phrase “they were all with one accord” occurs eleven times in the New Testament and on ten occasions in the Book of Acts. When God’s people come together in unity and prayer, heaven opens and the wind of revival blows upon His church.

“The Spirit delights for us to experience and enjoy the fragrance, freshness and fullness of spiritual revival.”

{2}

2. Openness of heart A self-examination was carried out in the Upper Room. The disciples recalled the sad and tragic story of Judas and prayed for a successor to Judas (Acts 1:24–25).

God will never send revival blessing while there is sin unconfessed, while hearts are closed to the blaze of His glory and to His light that reveals evil. The Spirit comes to cleanse and purify our hearts, expose every deception, heal every disease, and dispel every discouragement and despair.

3. Obedience of the will Obedience is always a prerequisite to the filling of the Holy Spirit. Acts 5:32 says that the Holy Spirit is given to those who obey Him. Charles Finney says that “A revival is nothing else than a new beginning of obedience to God.” May we experience a deep repentance and a clean break with sin. Are you longing for revival? Are you longing for the Holy Spirit to fall afresh on you? Are you longing for the wind of the Spirit to blow upon the Church of Jesus Christ? Get your sails ready with oneness of mind, openness of heart and obedience of will. May the words of this great hymn be your simple but sincere prayer: Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me; Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me. Melt me, mould me, fill me, use me. Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me. Spirit of the living God, move among us all; Make us one in heart and mind, make us one in love: Humble, caring, selfless, sharing. Spirit of the living God, fill our lives with love.

decide GOD to draw near to

Prepare Your Heart: • Tell the Lord you desire to meet Him. • Ask Him to cleanse you from all sin and unrighteousness. • Believe that He has forgiven you in Christ Jesus and thank Him. • Bring before Him your open and contrite heart. • Enter into His presence with expectancy. Meditate Before Prayer Session: • Hebrews 4:16 • Hebrews 11:6 • James 4:8 • Psalm 51:17 • Jeremiah 17:9 • Matthew 11:28–30

Going Through The Personal Prayer: During the 40-Day Prayer Journey, read each day’s Scripture passage and reflect on God’s Word and the prompters for the day. Transact with the LORD on what He is speaking to you. Act According To God’s Word: • Claim God’s promises. • Obey God’s commands. • Repent from sins. • Give thanks for God’s blessings. • Pray for God’s purposes to be done. Delight in being with the LORD. He is waiting for YOU! He delights in being with you! Enjoy your time with Him! Worship and adore Him in prayer! End your time with the LORD in prayer. Seal your transaction with the LORD with a Personal Prayer for the day. {6}

Going Through The Watchman Prayer: Next, using the WATCHMAN PRAYER as a guide, pray for God’s people in Covenant EFC, for Singapore and for Missions. • Note the prayer focus for the day. • Pause and ask the LORD if there is another Scripture, burden or blessing He would like you to pray about. • Follow His Spirit’s leading. God’s Word will authenticate the promptings you receive. Give thanks for His presence and guidance in your prayer journey. Continue to linger in His presence and joy as you go about the day’s routine. The prayer journey will culminate with four days of Dawn Prayer from 30 July–2 August and Day with Jesus on 3 August. In that week, seek the Lord and pray together with other believers, especially those in your District.

End your time with the LORD in prayer. Seal your transaction with the LORD with a Personal Prayer for the day.”

the discipline of fasting >> (Adapted from “The Discipline of Fasting”, Celebration of Discipline by Richard Foster)

WHY FAST? The very first statement Jesus made about fasting dealt with the question of motive. (Matthew 6:16–18) Fasting must forever centre on God. It must be God-initiated and God-ordained. Like the prophetess Anna, we need to be “worshipping with fasting.” (Luke 2:37) Physical benefits, success in prayer, the enduing with power, spiritual insights—these must never replace God as the centre of our fasting. John Wesley sums it up well when he declares, “First, let it [fasting] be done unto the Lord with our eye singly fixed on Him. Let our intention herein be this, and this alone, to glorify our Father which is in heaven…” Once the primary purpose of fasting is firmly fixed in our hearts, we are at liberty to understand that there are also secondary purposes in fasting. • Fasting reveals the things that control us. We cover up what is inside us with food and other good things, but in fasting these things surface. If pride controls us, it will be revealed almost immediately. David writes, “I humbled my soul with fasting.” (Psalm 69:10) Anger, bitterness, jealousy, strife, fear—if within us—will surface during fasting. At first, we will rationalise that our anger is due to our hunger; then we will realise that we are angry because the spirit of anger is within us. We can rejoice in this knowledge because we know that healing is available through the power of Christ. • Fasting reminds us that we are sustained “by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4). Food does not sustain us; God sustains us. In Christ, “All things hold together.” (Colossians 1:17) Therefore, in experiences of fasting, we are not so much abstaining from food as we are feasting on the word of God. Fasting is feasting! When the disciples brought lunch to Jesus, assuming that he would be starving, he declared, “I have food to eat of which you do not know...My food is to do the will of him who sent me, and to accomplish his work.” (John 4:32, 34)

{8}

• Fasting helps us keep our balance in life. Often, we allow nonessentials to take precedence in our lives too easily. Often, we crave things we do not need, until we are enslaved by them. Our human cravings and desires are like rivers that tend to overflow their banks; fasting helps keep them in their proper channels. Paul says, “I pommel my body and subdue it.” (1 Corinthians 9:27) This is not excessive asceticism. It is discipline and discipline brings freedom. Many have written on the many other values of fasting such as increased effectiveness in intercessory prayer, guidance in decisions, increased concentration and so on. In fasting, the most important thing to monitor is the inner attitude of the heart. Outwardly, you will be performing the regular duties of your day, but inwardly you will be in prayer and adoration, song, and worship. In a new way, cause every task of the day to be a sacred ministry to the Lord. With fasting, as in all matters, we can expect God to reward those who diligently seek Him!

“ john wesley {9}

First, let it [fasting] be done unto the Lord with our eye singly fixed on Him. Let our intention herein be this, and this alone, to glorify our Father which is in heaven…”

a guide to fasting >> (Adapted from LoveSingapore’s 40-Day Prayer Guide 2008)

How To Fast You are free to fast however the Spirit leads you. Some options are: • Total Fast: Abstain from solid foods for an extended part of the day. Take only water. You may fast from sunrise to sundown or from breakfast to afternoon tea. • One-Meal Fast: Sacrifice one full meal a day. • Beverage Fast: Abstain from solid foods for 24 hours. Take only water and liquid foods, such as milk, Milo or other health beverages. • Daniel Fast: Abstain from meats and other favourite delicacies. Take only small portions of fresh vegetables, fruit and juices. You may practise this as a 40-day routine. Or as Daniel 1:12 suggests, make this a 10-day fast. • Esther Fast: Abstain from solid foods for 24 hours for 3 days (Esther 4:16). How To Enjoy Fasting • Set aside time each day to seek God in prayer and fasting. It may be half an hour, an hour, or more. • Adopt an attitude of prayer as you go about your daily duties at home, at work or at school. Apply what you learnt in tangible actions. • Scale down your normal activities. Avoid vigorous exercise such as rock-climbing, cycling or jogging. • Be alert! Besides fasting from food, fast from things that distract you, such as television, the Internet, computer games; or things that destroy, such as coarse jesting or careless words. • Break your fast gradually and wisely. For health reasons, you should consume small portions as you break fast, avoiding chilli or acidic foods as much as possible.

{ 10 }

How To Involve Others Fasting together as a group is easier than doing it alone. Some options: • Family: Agree to fast and pray as a family. Decide on the type of fast your family members are comfortable with. Use this 40-Day Prayer Journal for your family devotion. • Covenant or Discipleship Groups: As a group, commit yourselves to a specific type of fast. Throughout this 40-Day Prayer Journey, yearn for personal transformation, church transformation and national transformation. Ask God to use your small group to be His mouthpiece and His outstretched hands here in Singapore and the nations. • Friends: In this city of mobile phones, keep a daily prayer appointment with a friend by phone. Send SMS reminders to pray or to share daily insights over the 40-Day Prayer Journey. At the agreed time, connect to pray! • Suggestion: From your fasting, donate the money you saved to the needy.

“ isaiah 58:6-7 { 11 }

Is this not the fast which I choose, To loosen the bonds of wickedness, To undo the bands of the yoke, And to let the oppressed go free And break isaiah 58:6–7 every yoke? Is it not to divide your bread with the hungry And bring the homeless poor into the house; When you see the naked, to cover him; And not to hide yourself from your own flesh?”

a guide to having solitude with God >> (Adapted from IDT Module 1B © 2011 Covenant EFC 2011)

What solitude is • Keeping company with God. • Being ALONE with God. • Being ONE with God. • Communing with God. • A GIFT … a JOY… a PRIVILEGE! Why? Imagine … the Almighty, Sovereign, Holy, Loving and Gracious God being with each of us, fellowshipping with us, delighting in us, alone. The Son of God obeyed the Father to suffer and die on the cross for all humanity that we might enjoy communion with God. What solitude is not 1 • NOT firstly a place but a state of mind and heart. • NOT being a company of one. • NOT being lonely and isolated. • NOT merely refraining from speech but actively listening. Why is solitude important? • Solitude helps us to nurture our relationship with God. • Solitude helps us to abide in Christ. • Solitude develops our hunger for God’s presence.

How do we have solitude? Internal factors: Our Heart • Submit to God To be contrite and vulnerable before God. To be real without pretense (Psalm 51:17). • Surrender to God To give in to God. To die to self in our will, wants and ways (Luke 9:23). • Desire God To know God. To hunger for intimacy with Him (Psalm 27:4). • Desire to be transformed To be like Jesus in character, deeds and life. To seek and set our minds on things above (Colossians 3:1–3).

{ 12 }

In that quietness, God longs to draw you into intimacy with Him.”

External factors: Our Action • Step 1: A Place Find a comfortable place where you can be still and alone with God. Do bring with you everything you need so that you will not need to get up from the place. • Step 2: A Quietness It takes discipline and practice to cultivate quietness. Being still is an intentional and deliberate attempt to silence the noisy workshops of our hearts. Leave your cares and worries and come before the presence of God. If there are distracting sounds, put those sounds behind you and let them dissolve into the background. If it gets too loud and distracting, do find another spot. • Step 3: An Honest Reckoning There will be “floating thoughts” that come into our silences (especially the things you need to do). Do write them on a piece of paper and attend to them at a later time. Tell yourself that all these can wait. Still your heart before God and seek His face. In that quietness, God longs to draw you into intimacy with Him. • Step 4: A Praise Start by praising God. God deserves the highest worship and adoration. Use a Praise and Worship song book and spend at least half an hour worshipping and adoring God for who He is and for what He has done. • Step 5: A Reflection Identify your thoughts and emotions. Those thoughts and emotions may arise from the time of praise and worship or from the beauty of creation around you. They may also be evoked in the course of the reading of the Bible, an article, a book, or from a situation in your life. Ask yourself why you are thinking and feeling this way. Reflect and ask God how He views those thoughts and feelings. Listening is key during solitude. Listening to self and, more importantly, listening to God. • Step 6: A Meditation Meditate on the Word of God. God speaks to you primarily through His Word. As the Lord leads you to read a Scripture passage, read it slowly, ask what each word or phrase means in the context, and read it several times over. Observe repetitions, key words, who God is, what God has done or promised to do, and what God expects us to be and to do.

1 Celebration

of Discipline, by Richard J. Foster, (Harper & Row: San Francisco, 1987), p. 84.

{ 13 }

• Step 7: A Prayer Pray for yourself in the light of God’s revelation to you regarding your heart, thought, emotions and lifestyle. Pray that you will choose God, His way and His will. Pray for others who are in similar situations, or as the Lord leads you. • Step 8: A Journal Pen down in your journal brief notes on your communion with the Lord. Record God’s word to you, whether a promise, an encouraging word, a rebuke, or an assurance of forgiveness, etc. All such words are precious! Record God’s faithfulness and lovingkindness to you for your remembrance and thanksgiving!

Note: Steps 5, 6, 7 and 8 are NOT rigidly chronological. In fact, they are very fluid. You will find that these four steps interweave with one another seamlessly as you commune with the Lord and He with you. Critical factor: Our Faith • Believe God will show up, listen to and commune with you! • Lay hold of God’s Word, truth and promises that He will! (Hebrews 4:16; 11:6; James 4:8; 1 John 5:14–15; John 10:3–4) Solitude is NOT an option if we desire to endure for the long haul and finish the race. It is one of the disciplines of the inner life. And our inner life must be fed. In fact, Jesus set us the example Himself. What more for us, His disciples! (See Matthew 4:1–11; Luke 4:42; Luke 5:16; Luke 6:12; Matthew 14:13; Matthew 14:23; Mark 1:35; Mark 6:31; Matthew 26:36–46.) We will do well to guard against deception, distractions, disobedience, self-will, self-love and self-sufficiency as we spend time in solitude with the Lord. Some benefits of solitude We find fulfillment! • Fulfillment of our being human in God. • Fulfillment in our obedience to God. • Fulfillment of our heart’s yearnings for God.

{ 14 }

This is because through solitude: • We grow in intimacy with God. • Intimacy with God IS the blessing! We receive favour and blessings! Within self • Greater sensitivity to God. • Greater spiritual well-being. • Greater victory over personal strongholds. • Greater burden to pray. Toward others • Increased sensitivity toward others. • Increased compassion for others. • Increased attentiveness and responsiveness to the needs of others. • Increased prayer for others. We become fruitful for Jesus! (John 15:5) • Bear the character and life of Jesus. • Be witnesses for Jesus. • Bring others to Jesus.

Solitude is NOT an option if we desire to endure for the long haul and finish the race. It is one of the disciplines of the inner life.”

Search Me, O God!

sunday, 1 july WEEK 1, DAY 1

PERSONAL PRAYER IDOLATRY Read Exodus 20:1-6; Jeremiah 2:13 Worship requires focus; our focus is evident in what we build our lives upon and whom we serve. When we forsake the Eternal and Almighty God to build what is transient and impotent, we are enslaved to the biggest lie of all—that we can depend on the gods of our own making and choosing. Reflect • If you asked those who are close to you what the core affections in your life are, how would they answer? • Is Christ the only one in your worship? Pray • Thank God that He alone is more than worthy of your worship. • Tell the Lord that with all that you are, have and know, you will worship Him alone. WATCHMAN PRAYER Church: Mission Statement

PERSONAL PRAYER Indifference Read Luke 10:27 Owing nothing yet withholding nothing, God died for us who can offer nothing for our salvation; this is Love. The Holy and Almighty One lavished His undeserving grace on us—condemned and unworthy sinners! What an awesome God we worship! Reflect • Have you given yourself freely and fully to Christ? For example, have you surrendered ALL of your desires, emotions, thoughts and strengths as an expression of your love towards Him? • Have you emptied yourself to love Him? • How has God’s love transformed you and moulded your relationships? Pray • Lay all hindrances to an unadulterated love for God at the feet of Jesus. • Ask the Spirit to lead you to love others as Christ loves them. WATCHMAN PRAYER Church Core Value: Truth 4 5

wednesday, 4 july WEEK 1, DAY 4

PERSONAL PRAYER PRIDE Read Proverbs 16:18 Pride anchors rebellion in our hearts as it always keeps disobedience an option; God sees the unbowed hearts behind bowing knees. Pride blinds us from seeing our needful dependence on Him and even denies there is a problem. Pride wants to contain God rather than be consumed by Him; but this causes us to lose our lives rather than save them. Behold the Almighty One and worship Him for who He is, not what we want Him to be. thursday, 5 july WEEK 1, DAY 5

PERSONAL PRAYER ANGER Read Galatians 5:19-26; Ephesians 4:26-32 Anger often thinks it is righteous when it is in fact proud. Righteous anger bears the mark of God’s holiness and love, spurring us to life; whereas prideful anger partners the enemy in condemnation and destruction, leading to death. When our lives are examined, may others find the marks of Christ’s forgiveness, humility and love. Reflect • Is your life a model of grace, tender-heartedness and edification for all? • Do you use anger to get your way? Pray • Always gratefully remember how you, an object of wrath, have been forgiven by His grace. • Reconcile with at least one person whom you have alienated in your anger, asking for forgiveness. friday, 6 july WEEK 1, DAY 6

PERSONAL PRAYER Infirmities Read 1 Corinthians 11:27-32; 1 Peter 4:12-14,19 & 5:8-11 When infirmities hit us, the knee-jerk response is to pray for deliverance. Yet, God’s Word tells us that there are various reasons for infirmities. Hence, seeking the Lord for His insight with regards to the cause will lead us to the appropriate response. If we have sinned, then confession and repentance are required by the Holy One. But if we are sharing in Christ’s sufferings, we are exhorted to rejoice, entrusting our souls to our faithful Creator. Reflect • Do you suspect or know that you are compromising His ways? • How have you been embracing the infirmities and suffering in your life? Pray • Trust God and give thanks in all circumstances. written prayer by Elder Sebastian Quek Father God, You have shown us what is good and what You require of us. Your desire is for us to act justly, to love mercy and to walk humbly with You (Micah 6:8). We are in tremendous need of a Saviour, and we therefore relinquish control of our lives to You. Help us to walk in brokenness that produces true humility.

Search Me, O God!

saturday, 7 july WEEK 1, DAY 7

PERSONAL PRAYER Immorality Read Galatians 5:19-26; Matthew 5:27-32 The world is baffled by why God is so hung up on sin, as if He’s picking on some trivial speck on a shelf. After all, the world reasons, isn’t the whole world doing it? God sees nothing trivial in sin. In fact, He saw no way to rescue us from sin’s clutches except to die as an atonement for us and start living within us. Let us see sin as God sees, and hate it as He does. Reflect • Do you rationalize and justify some of your sins? • Why is God able to hate sin and judge sinners? Pray • Determine to crucify all your fleshly desires in Christ. • Let Christ reign and live in you (Galatians 2:20). written prayer by Ps Tan Kay Kiong Lord God, Covenant is at a very exciting phase of her history. Truly, You are the sole enabler of all things. Only You can bring about authentic discipleship and intentional disciple-making at every level and people group in our local church. We realize that unless we are gracefounded, growth-focused and godliness-filled, our destiny in You will be compromised. Help us, Lord, for without You, we MUST fail.

Cleanse Me, O God!

sunday, 8 july WEEK 2, DAY 8

PERSONAL PRAYER Our Heart Read 1 Samuel 16:7; Jeremiah 17:9; Matthew 15:18-20 God looks at our hearts. Period. We can delude others about our true standing before the Holy and Sovereign One by covering up our tracks or keeping quiet. We can even delude ourselves through rationalization or denial. Yet God, in His redemptive grace, calls us to allow His Truth and Spirit to search deep within us that we may be cleansed afresh and follow wholly after the LORD. Reflect • How is your heart today? Pray • Ask the Holy Spirit to search your heart. • Confess and repent before God. Receive His forgiveness and consecration. • Commit to be wholeheartedly devoted to God (1 Kings 8:22-61). written prayer by Ps Tony Yeo Lord God, 2012 has marked a momentous leadership succession and transition in Covenant. Leaders from our two centres were also commissioned and consecrated, and a new church board of elders and deacons dedicated. You ordained to gift the church with qualified spiritual leadership so that the whole body of Christ might be built up and experience unity in faith and knowledge of the Son of God, and reach spiritual maturity after the fullness of Christ (Ephesians 4:13). Help us, Lord, to dream big and to rise up (Ezra 10:4) as we press on towards VISION 2028.

Cleanse Me, O God!

monday, 9 july WEEK 2, DAY 9

PERSONAL PRAYER Our Thoughts Read Philippians 4:8 Have you ever stopped to reflect on what you think about every day? Whether we are aware of it or not, our thoughts affect our feelings, moods and behaviour. The mind is the battlefield of the Christian. A sinful lifestyle, confusion, anxiety and doubts perpetuate themselves because we have allowed our minds to think unholy, ungodly and unhealthy thoughts. Reflect • Take an honest inventory of your thought life based on Philippians 4:8. • What kinds of thoughts dominate your everyday living? Pray • Commit to renew your mind daily with the truth of God (Romans 12:2). • Ask the Holy Spirit to reign in your thought life. • Take every thought captive to obey Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5-6). written prayer by Gracia Chew Lord, we recognize Your hand in leading and guiding the purchase of the ACK Centre. We are excited about the next phase of Your calling to fulfill our mission of returning the Church to its disciple-making roots. With the ACK Centre, You have created many new opportunities to equip and train TNG, interns and leaders to be “A Certain Kind. May You find us faithful and pleasing as we commit ourselves to be diligent stewards of the people, provisions and possibilities that You have entrusted to us.

tuesday, 10 july WEEK 2, DAY 10

PERSONAL PRAYER Our Words Read Matthew 12:33-37; Ephesians 4:29; Colossians 4:6 The tongue is a small part of our body yet it is very powerful. With the tongue, we praise God and lead the lost to Christ. But with the same tongue, we gossip, slander, criticize, tell lies to ruin someone’s reputation or break a person’s heart (James 3:56,9-10). Because the tongue has tremendous power to give life or to destroy, we need God’s cleansing, as well as yieldedness to the Holy Spirit’s control, of the source of our speech—our hearts. Reflect • How does your speech glorify God and build others up? Pray • Commit Ephesians 4:29 to memory. • Ask the Holy Spirit to cleanse your speech by filling you with the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). WATCHMAN PRAYER Church: IDMC and Global Discipleship Congress (GDC) Vision 4 5

written prayer by John Chambers Lord, the Church worldwide is shallow and stagnant, and Your calling upon us to be a catalyst, “returning the Church to its disciple-making roots, far exceeds our human capacity. Turn our eyes to You and redeem Your Church! Through Your power, give Pastor Edmund Chan and the Global Alliance team the faith, courage, resources and wisdom to fulfill Your calling. Cleanse Me, O God!

wednesday, 11 july WEEK 2, DAY 11

PERSONAL PRAYER Our Attitudes Read Psalm 51:17 God is not looking for independent, willful and religiously pious worshippers. He seeks those whose hearts are broken, contrite and surrendered so that He can cleanse and redeem them. Such persons are emptied of pride and self-will as they fear the Lord and are indebted to Him for His grace. From this brokenness, these ones love and honour God and others, thus delighting the Lord. Reflect • Do your attitudes flow from pride or brokenness? • Do your attitudes mirror the character and values of the world, yourself or the Lord? Pray • Ask for a broken and contrite heart. • Ask God to cleanse and consecrate your attitude for His glory. WATCHMAN PRAYER Church Pillar: Worship 4 5

2 Index finger: Pray for leaders That church leaders will live their lives as worship unto God (Romans 12:1) 3 Middle finger: Pray for significant people That worship teams will lead in corporate worship out of their personal worship of God. 4 Ring finger: Pray for those in need That Covenanters will relinquish their heart’s throne to God as worship. 5 Little finger: Pray for self That I will be a true worshipper of God in spirit and in truth (John 4:23-24).

{ 42 }

written prayer by Quek Ai Lay Lord, teach us the true posture of worship: to bow down before You, for You alone are God. In our worship we submit our wills so that Your will be done; we surrender our lives so that You can live in and through us; we obey so as to do the Father’s good pleasure. Fill us with Your Spirit that we may worship in the truth of who You are: God eternal, almighty, perfect and glorious.

Cleanse Me, O God!

thursday, 12 july WEEK 2, DAY 12

PERSONAL PRAYER Our Actions Read James 4:17 We often associate sin with doing wrong or causing hurt or harm to others. It is a sin to speak ill of a friend; it is also a sin to avoid your friend when he needs your help or friendship. Knowing God’s will without taking the corresponding action to fulfill it—this is sin in God’s eyes. God desires our obedience. Let us guard against giving excuses, rationalizing and procrastinating to do what is right. Reflect • Are you substituting good intentions for obedience? • Identify the cause of your lack of or delayed obedience. Would you choose to obey joyfully and immediately? Pray • Ask for active obedience in doing what God has called you to do. WATCHMAN PRAYER Church Pillar: Prayer 4 5

{ 44 }

written prayer by Kristen Chua Lord, we thank You for awakening us to pray like never before. Covenant would not exist if our founders had not prayed. And we would not be able to go on if we stopped praying. Apart from You, we are truly nothing. We confess we do not desire You enough. friday, 13 july WEEK 2, DAY 13

PERSONAL PRAYER Our Emotions Read Galatians 5:19-26 Strong and uncontrolled feelings often trigger sinful actions which bring about devastation in a disciple’s relationship with God, his personal life and the lives of others. A moment of passion leads to sexual misconduct; a treasured friendship is broken over a silly disagreement; a fit of anger causes the loss of a job. Healthy feelings are essential to holy living and we must submit our emotions to the control of the Holy Spirit. Reflect • Does any emotion control you? Pray • Confess and repent of any sin in Galatians 5:19-26. • Ask God for someone that you can be accountable to as you cultivate the fruit of the Holy Spirit. For whatever our eyes seek after reveals our heart’s most cherished desires. Reflect • How have your sight and your heart’s desires been transformed since the day Jesus saved you? • How badly do you want to see God and the things that matter to Him in your daily life? Pray • Ask God to cleanse your eyes and purify your heart. • Ask God to change your heart so that you will earnestly yearn to see and treasure what is of eternal worth. PERSONAL PRAYER SEE what Jesus saw! Read John 4:34-38 Jesus saw His purpose in life was to accomplish the will of God. Jesus saw the people around Him not merely as potential children of God, but people with ready hearts to believe and receive Him as Saviour and Lord. Lastly, Jesus saw you and me as reapers of His Harvest. What do you see? Reflect • What is your purpose in life—is God at the centre of it all? • If your life does not revolve around God, identify what or whom it revolves around. monday, 16 july WEEK 3, DAY 16

PERSONAL PRAYER FEEL what Jesus felt! Read Matthew 9:35-38 Jesus fulfilled God’s will wherever He went, as He taught, shared the Gospel and healed the sick. Jesus also showed us by His example that we must do God’s will with compassion. Our service to the Lord and others is the outflow of a heart of worship and love (Luke 10:27). Reflect • Have you been God’s harvest worker wherever you are? Eg. During overseas business trips and holidays, or in Singapore—at home, at work, or in the neighbourhood? • Have you been witnessing for Jesus with His compassion? Pray • Ask God to mould you to serve with compassion like Jesus, your Lord and Saviour. • Beseech the Lord of the Harvest to send out workers into His Harvest. PERSONAL PRAYER DO what Jesus did! Read Luke 19:1-10 Jesus was single-minded in seeking and saving those who live apart from God. He disregarded the disapproval of the crowd as He invited Himself to Zaccheus’ home. Jesus loves sinners and transforms us into His own likeness—in character and in deed. Reflect • Have you been single-minded in seeking and saving the lost? • Have you grumbled and become offended when you are sidestepped while sinners are shown kindness? • How have you been transformed into Christ’s likeness since the day Jesus met you? Pray • Ask the Lord to forgive you in areas He has convicted you of. • Ask the Lord for a heart that willingly and joyfully seeks and saves the lost. WATCHMAN PRAYER Missions: Urban Missions

Would you pray likewise, to the Father’s delight? Reflect • What focus have your prayers had of late? • Can God the Father count on you to pray prayers that please and glorify Him, and advance His Kingdom? PERSONAL PRAYER BEAR with others as Jesus did! Read Romans 15:1-7; John 17:21 In life, interpersonal relationships and God’s Kingdom work, there will be conflicts. God has instructed us to bear with and please one another for the building up of the other—so that we will have the same mind in Christ. When we have mutual love and acceptance of one another, God is greatly glorified and the world may believe that Jesus has been sent by God. Reflect • How tenacious have you been in building and protecting the unity of God’s people? • Have you made God’s glory your foremost goal in your life? Pray • Tell God you choose to love others—Covenanters from other CGs, in MandarinDialect ministries, and Christians from other denominations and nations. WATCHMAN PRAYER Missions: E-Missions

PERSONAL PRAYER MULTIPLY as Jesus mandates! Read 2 Timothy 2:2; Matthew 28:18-20 Many run to Jesus for His blessings and, in the same breath, run away from His burden for the lost. While we become disciples of a certain kind, we would do well to also reproduce after our kind. As we arise to our call as His ministers of reconciliation and disciple-making in the world, we can trust in Christ’s providence and blessings— that those whom we disciple will in turn win others to Christ and disciple them. Reflect • Are you winning the lost for Christ? • Are you discipling others who are discipling yet others? Pray • Pray that God’s compassion for people will be fanned into flame within us. • Pray for a willing and faithful heart, leaving excuses at His feet. For God saw no better way to bring Himself to us, and reconcile us to Himself, than through Christ being with us. Likewise, Jesus sees no better way to bring Himself to the nations, reconciling them to God, than through us being with them, as witnesses of His wondrous Love. Reflect • Do you seek or shun mission opportunities? • How far is your “care-reach”? Pray • Thank Jesus that you may be His witness. • Ask the Lord for mission opportunities. • Pray that you will be obedient and controlled by Christ’s Love. WATCHMAN PRAYER Missions: Missions Prayer

PERSONAL PRAYER Our Will and Our Rights Read Luke 9:23 Is there a difference between being committed and being surrendered to Christ? Both are serious and sincere decisions. However, when we are committed, we still seek to keep control over our lives; whereas when we are surrendered, we relinquish our control to Christ. Surrender launches our faith into action. Reflect • Are there areas in your life where Christ has called you to deny yourself? • In your life, is there something that you have committed to the Lord but not surrendered to Him? Mould Me, O God!

monday, 23 july WEEK 4, DAY 23

PERSONAL PRAYER Our Significant Relationships Read Luke 9:57-62 An undivided heart keeps a disciple focused singularly on Christ, the Bread of life. If our relationship with Christ is not top priority, then any relationship ahead of Him is idolatry. No reason can ever justify diluting our allegiance to Christ, for He is either Lord of all or not Lord at all. Reflect • Are there relationships that are pulling you away from Christ? • Is Christ the anchor of your decisions in life? Pray • Tell God that you will keep your eyes firmly on Jesus and follow Him, with no turning back. • Subject all your earthly relationships under His Lordship. tuesday, 24 july WEEK 4, DAY 24

PERSONAL PRAYER An Easy and Comfortable Life Read Luke 9:57-62 Discipleship in Christ is neither about feeling ready nor feeling good. Spiritual zeal often masks our preference to follow Christ on our terms rather than His. To guard against romanticizing our faith, let us remember that it is Christ, not comfort, whom we follow. Reflect • Are you bargaining with Christ over some issues rather than following Him unreservedly? • Is there something uncomfortable, or even painful, which the Spirit has been prompting you to do but you have resisted doing? Pray • Pray for courage to prevail over comfort in following Christ. • As Christ leads you to act, pray that you will trust Him wholeheartedly for the outcome. PERSONAL PRAYER Our Possessions and Money Read Matthew 6:19-24 Truly blessed is one who holds out his possessions to Christ with open palms; for he serves a Master who frees him from being possessed by earthly treasures. His heart rests as he trusts and rejoices as he gives, because Christ orders his priorities. The world has barely a pull on him for Christ’s love and grace are ever before him, propelling all his investments. Reflect • Are you struggling between giving and withholding? • What do heavenly treasures mean to you? thursday, 26 july WEEK 4, DAY 26

PERSONAL PRAYER Our Self Sufficiency Read 2 Corinthians 12:9-10; Ezekiel 37:1-11 Despair is found not in the gloom of circumstances but in the void of self-reliance. Troubles unveil our hidden spiritual pride. When we abandon this pride and cling instead to Christ’s unmerited grace for us, our hearts are unmistakably roused and the sinews of our beings mysteriously strengthened for what lies ahead. Thus we know that God has empowered us and His grace is more than enough. Reflect • Is your sense of identity and significance built on Christ alone? • Does your life reflect total dependence and desperation for God? Pray • Pray that you will grow in dependency on God in every aspect of your life. • Pray that you will remain in Him (John 15:5). PERSONAL PRAYER The Sovereignty of God Read Jeremiah 18:1-12 If we do not perceive God (the Potter) as holy, sovereign, just and merciful, all the “kneading” on us (clay) seems painfully purposeless. But though His sovereignty is absolute, He will not fail to respond in love, with His grace and truth, to the state of our hearts. God calls us to give in to Him. He is exclusively sovereign and totally trustworthy. Reflect • Do you struggle with or embrace God’s sovereignty over your life? • Consider God’s sovereign plan for your life (Jeremiah 29:11). Therefore, we cannot live however we please as our body is the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit. We are to regard sexual sin outside the context of marriage as a violation of this holy intimacy. Instead, we are to honour God with our bodies. Reflect • How are you living your life in light of the fact that your body is the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit? This joy that the Lord bestows on us truly flows like “rivers of living water”—boundlessly bubbling up from our innermost being—regardless of the circumstances! This joy, which glows quietly but steadily with an awe of the Lord, is the work of the Holy Spirit within us. Through it, the Holy Spirit Himself will draw many to salvation in Christ (Acts 2:42-47). PERSONAL PRAYER Serving My Neighbours Read Luke 10:25-37 When God puts another person’s need before us, it is an opportunity to bless another and learn of Him. The priest and Levite, who supposedly worshiped the Lord, avoided their severely wounded fellow Jew. Yet it was the Samaritan who “saw him”, “felt compassion” and “took care of him” without counting the cost, discomfort, inconvenience and cultural divide. Reflect • Jesus affirms that the Samaritan was the one who served and loved his neighbour and tells us, “Go and do the same.” Would you? • To whom is God leading you to be a neighbour? When they make decisions or formulate policy, let the welfare of the people they serve and nation at large weigh upon their hearts, so that they will not be distracted by political or personal agendas. Cause them to act with ethical uprightness, judicious discernment, deep compassion and moral courage. Let each make a positive difference for the nation and its people.

PERSONAL PRAYER Serving in My Lord’s Kingdom Read Ephesians 4:1-16 God has made each one unique, gifted differently. Are you serving the Body by faith? • Are you willing to serve wherever God leads you? Pray • Thank God that you have gifts by faith in Christ Jesus. • Pray for His empowerment and boldness to serve humbly and faithfully, to fulfill your calling in the Body! how to be filled with the Holy Spirit >> (Adapted from “How to be filled with the Holy Spirit”, A W Tozer)

How are we to be filled with the Holy Spirit? Before we deal with the question of how to be filled with the Holy Spirit, there are some matters which first have to be settled. Before you are filled with the Holy Spirit, you must… Be sure that you can be filled. Satan has opposed the doctrine of the Spirit-filled life as bitterly as any other doctrine there is. The Church has tragically neglected this great liberating truth—that there is now for the child of God a full and completely satisfying anointing with the Holy Spirit. So you have to be sure that it is for you. You must be sure that it is God’s will for you; that is, that it is part of the total plan included and embraced within the work of Christ in redemption! You must be satisfied that it is not abnormal. If it appears unusual, this is only because our spiritual lives are so wretchedly far down from where they should be. You must be satisfied again, that there is nothing strange or queer about the Holy Spirit. There is nothing eerie, nothing contrary to the normal operations of the human heart about the Holy Ghost. He is only the essence of Jesus imparted to believers. You read the four gospels and see for yourself how wonderfully calm, pure, sane, simple, sweet, natural and lovable Jesus was! Even philosophers who don’t believe in His deity have to admit the lovableness of His character. You must be sure of all these above to the point of conviction. That is, you must be convinced to a point where you won’t try to persuade God. Unless you have arrived at this place in your listening and thinking and meditating and praying, where you know that the Spiritfilled life is for you, unless you are convinced that in the blood of Jesus when He died on the cross there was included, as a purchase of that blood, your right to a full, Spirit-filled life—unless you are convinced that this isn’t an added, extra, deluxe something that you have to go to God and beg for, I recommend this to you: I recommend that you don’t do anything about it yet except to meditate upon the Scriptures bearing on this truth. Go to the Word of God and to those parts of it which deal with the Holy Spirit and meditate upon them. Once again, before you can be filled with the Spirit, you must desire to be filled. Are you sure that you want to be possessed by a spirit other than your own? Are you certain that you desire to hand the keys of your soul over to the Holy Spirit? Are you sure that you want your personality to be taken over by one who will expect obedience to the written and living Word? Are you sure, brother? You want His help, yes; you want a lot of His { 110 }

benefits, yes; but are you willing to go with Him in His opposition to the easygoing ways of the world? Or can’t you get along the way you are? You have been doing fairly well. You pray, you read your Bible, you give to missions, you have prayer at home and you are glad about all these. Can’t you get along just like that? But perhaps in your heart, you feel that you just can’t go on as you are, that the level of spirituality to which you know yourself called is way beyond you. If you feel that there are levels of spirituality, mystic deeps and heights of spiritual communion, purity and power that you have never known, that there is fruit which you know you should have and have not—I would say, “Come on,” because God has something for you! There is a spiritual loneliness, an inner place where God brings the seeker. There is a darkness of mind, an emptiness of heart, but it is preliminary to the daybreak. O God, bring us, somehow to the daybreak! Here is how to receive the Holy Spirit. Firstly, present your body to Him (Romans 12:1–2). God can’t fill what He can’t have. Are you ready to present your body with all its functions and all that it contains—your mind, your personality, your spirit, your love, your ambitions, your all? Now the second thing is to ask (Luke 11:9–11). The gift of the Holy Spirit is all for us, and if the Lord wanted to do it, He could give it without our asking, but He chooses to have us ask. “Ask of me, and I will give thee” is always God’s order; so why not ask? Acts 5:32 tells us the third thing to do. God gives his Holy Spirit to them that obey Him. Are you ready to obey and do what you are asked to do? To live by the Scriptures as you understand them? The next thing is, have faith (Galatians 3:2). We receive the Holy Spirit by faith as we receive the Lord in salvation by faith. The Spirit comes as a gift of God to us in power. He possesses the full body and mind and life and heart, taking the whole personality over, gently but directly and bluntly and make it His, that we may become a habitation of God through the Spirit. Our comforter, the Holy Spirit has come to the earth. He is here and ready, when we present our vessel, to fill our vessel if we will ask and believe. Will you be filled with the Holy Spirit?
