o as Senior Pastors, we will lead Covenant EFC in 2020 into a Year of Greater Discipleship to: • take our Personal Discipleship deeper (keep digging into God’s Word and obey Him); • take our Family Discipleship higher (keep modelling Jesus and grow together); and • take our Disciplemaking further (keep sharing our faith and disciple others). We believe that the Gospel of Mark ia an appropriate book to study together as a church to grow towards Greater Discipleship. Uniquely, Mark was the first Gospel written and the shortest one. It was written for a

Roman audience and moves very quickly with various snapshots of the Servant King’s ministry. What is intriguing is that it was written by John Mark. We first see John Mark in Acts 12. Thereafter, he went on a missionary trip with Paul and Barnabas in Acts 12:25; 13:5,13, but for whatever reasons, John dropped out halfway. When we come to Acts 15:36-39, we witness the sharp disagreement between Paul and Barnabas over taking John Mark on the second missionary trip. Because of him, the two spiritual giants parted company. This is the John Mark whom scholars believed wrote the Gospel of Mark through his close relationship with Peter. How amazing it is that John Mark who was regarded by Paul as a dropout and failure was used by God to write the very first Gospel! This only goes to demonstrate that it is not about us, but about the grace and

power of God. That sealed our decision to preach through the Gospel of Mark for 2020. May God greatly bless you as you use this Devotional Journal to spend time daily in worship, prayer, Bible reading, reflection and application. Our prayer for you is reflected in this very old song, “Day by day, O dear Lord, three things I pray — to see You more clearly, love You more dearly and follow You more closely, day by day!” St. Francis of Assisi wrote: “Start by doing what’s necessary, then do what’s possible, and suddenly you are doing the impossible.” Whether it’s about our personal life, family, work or church discipleship, the wisdom of this quote applies. Their burnt offerings and sacrifices will be accepted on my altar; for my house will be called a house of prayer for all nations.” Isaiah 56:7 From 2 Peter 3:9, we can see the Lord’s heartbeat – He does not want any to perish but for all to be saved. God desires every tribe, language and tongue from all people groups and all nations to come to the knowledge of salvation. Churches have been sending missionaries and short term mission trippers into the nations for many years and will continue to do so until the work is done in reaching all nations or until His return.

In Matthew 9:36-37, Jesus told His disciples, who probably saw the immense and humanly impossible task before them, to pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out the labourers. So who are these labourers? Is He referring only to missionaries? I have been taught that our missionaries are like people who go down the deep and narrow well to rescue the lost and dying, while the rest of us are the rope holders. We are all called to be part of God’s work of saving the lost throughout the nations. One important aspect of missions is prayer. God has called His Church to be a house of prayer for all nations (Isa 56:7). We do not just pray for ourselves, our family, our church and our nation, but we are also called to pray for the nations.

Pray For God to give us, His Church, a heart of compassion for the lost and eyes to see the work He has called the Church to in reaching the lost for the nations. For God to speak to His people (you and I included), to commit ourselves to labour on our knees for missionaries and the nations. For the Church to disciple believers and prepare them to be sent out as the next wave of workers of the harvest field. Especially for Christian parents to disciple the next generation, pray for them and release them to answer God’s call for the work of missions. For open doors for our missionaries for the preaching of the Gospel (Col 4:3), for effective ministry work (1 Cor 16:9), God’s protection (Psa 91) and God’s provision. For God to lift the veil that has blinded the eyes, minds and hearts of the lost throughout the nations, so that they may see the light of the Gospel of Jesus (1 Cor 4:4).

Understanding the Servant King

O B S E RVAT I O N What observations can you make about Jesus’ disciples with regard to understanding Jesus?

Deeper Reflection

HEN JESUS CALLED the early disciples to follow Him, they “immediately” “left” their vocation and family to follow Him (Mk 1:16-20). Jesus’ disciples were “with Him” all the time that He might train and prepare them for the Gospel mission (Mk 3:13-15). They had the privilege to be “given the mystery of the kingdom of God” (Mk 4:11) and to have Jesus explain His parabolic teaching to them privately (Mk 4:33-34). We would think that such intimate contact with Jesus would result in them knowing and understanding Him. But Mark tells us otherwise. Having seen that the mighty wind and waves obeyed Jesus, their response was “Who then is this?” (Mk 4:39-41). They saw how Jesus multiplied the five loaves and two fish to feed the five thousand (Mk 6:34-44). Then they saw Jesus walking on the stormy sea, but they failed to see Him as the Creator King of the universe: “for they had not gained any insight from the incident of the loaves, but their hearts were hardened” (v.52). As they continued to follow Jesus, they still received this rebuke from their Master: “Do you not yet see or understand? Do you have a hardened heart?” (Mk 8:17-18). Understanding Jesus is vital in discipleship, but it is not simple. Far too often we stereotype God. To truly understanding God, it is necessary to drop our preconceptions of what God is like.

God blesses us with protection. Scripture: Psalm 121:7-8

ACTIVITY BITE Gather your family members in a room. Get someone to sit on a chair in the middle to play the role of the “protectee”, while a second person plays the role of the “protector” and a third person acts as the “attacker”. The “attacker” will make 10 paper balls from old newspapers and throw it from a distance to try and hit the “protectee”. Meanwhile, the “protector” will stand in front of the “protectee” and attempt to block the paper balls from hitting him or her.

CHAT TIME Q1: If you were the “protectee”, how did you feel about being protected? Q2: What are some “paper balls” in life that may cause harm to us? Q3: What does it mean when God says that He will keep watch over you as you come and go?

LEARNING POINT Toddlers love to roam around an open space, exploring things that may be interesting to them, but not having awareness of the things that can cause injury to them. That’s why their parents are always close by to watch over them. Our Heavenly Father is always close by to watch over us even though we cannot see Him. He will protect us from anything that can cause us harm. We may fall occasionally just like toddlers, but He will pick us up. This is His blessing for us because we are His children.

ACTION POINT Speak and declare to each family member, “The Lord protects you _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ (say the name of the person) because you are His child.”

“Jesus Christ, the Son of God”

O B S E RVAT I O N What is the significance of Mark beginning his Gospel with the sentence in verse 1?

Deeper Reflection

ARK 1:1-13 introduces the main character in Mark’s Gospel, “Jesus Christ, the Son of God” (v.1), with verse 1 functioning as “the title of the Gospel”1. “The beginning of the gospel” (v.1a) points to a new beginning in salvation history, a “beginning” comparable to God’s creation (Gen 1:1). In Jesus – the centre and content of “the gospel” – “a new creation is at hand”2. The “gospel,” which appears seven times in Mark (Mk 1:1, 14-15; 8:35; 10:29; 13:10; 14:9), is the story of salvation in Jesus. The Gospel is more than a set of truths or beliefs. It is a person, “the gospel about Jesus Christ” (v.1b, NIV). “Jesus”, which means “God is salvation”, was a common name in the first century. But think about this: Why did God in His most definitive self-revelation in human form take on a common name? Jesus is “Christ”, the Messiah. In those days, the Jews were looking forward to an anointed Davidic king who would restore the kingdom of Israel (cf. Acts 1:6). But Jesus hardly referred to Himself as “Christ”, except once obliquely (Mk 9:41), because of its nationalistic connotations. Mark begins his Gospel by introducing Jesus as “the Son of God” (v.1) and ends with the centurion’s confession, “Truly this man was the Son of God!” (Mk 15:39). Are we merely familiar with “Jesus Christ, the Son of God”? Or, do we really know who “Jesus Christ, the Son of God” is?

“The Way of the Lord”

O B S E RVAT I O N What has “the way of the Lord” (vv.2-3) to do with John the Baptist’s “baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins” (vv.4-5)?

Deeper Reflection

HE “WORD OF GOD CAME” to John the Baptist “in the wilderness” (vv.2, 4; Lk 3:2), breaking the 400-year long prophetic silence since Malachi. In the Bible, more than a geographical location, the “wilderness” is a place where God meets, reveals Himself to, tests and saves His people, a place of repentance and hence of God’s grace.3 So, John was “in the wilderness preaching a baptism of repentance for forgiveness of sins” (v.4) for those who came “confessing their sins” (v.5). John’s baptism was “a symbol of moral and spiritual regeneration”4. John was to “prepare Your way” and “make ready the way of the Lord” in fulfilment of Scripture (vv.2-3 – a tapestry of Exo 23:20, Mal 3:1 and Isa 40:3). In the Old Testament quotations, several of the pronouns and “the way of the Lord” refer to God. But Mark applies these texts with reference to Jesus. So, John was not simply the herald of the Messiah, but of God Himself, who appeared in Jesus. Jesus’ divinity is alluded to here. “The way of the Lord” is “not primarily a reference to ethical behaviour”5, but is “ultimately the way of Jesus to the cross”6. Mark shows later Jesus “on the way7 going up to Jerusalem” to be crucified (Mk 10:17, 32-34). This is “the way of the Lord”, apart from which “repentance for forgiveness of sins” is not possible.

HY DOES MARK DESCRIBE John the Baptist’s dressing and diet with details – wearing “camel’s hair” and “leather belt” and eating “locusts and wild honey” (v.6)? Mark “wanted to suggest as early as possible that discipleship involves withdrawal from the world and sacrifice”8. John’s mission, through his “baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins” (Mk 1:4), was to proclaim and point to the people the “One [who] is coming” (v.7a) – the Messiah. John gave a threefold description of the superiority of this Coming One in relation to himself and his ministry: He “is mightier than I”, “I am not fit to stoop down and untie the thong of His sandals” (v.7) and He will baptise “with the Holy Spirit”, while he himself baptised “with water” (v.8). Stooping down to untie the thong of one’s sandals was only done by a slave. For John, the Coming One is so high and mighty, that he was unworthy to do even that to Him. Imagine the great expectation and anticipation of the people concerning this Coming One. Mark the word “come”. The “One is coming” – who is high and mighty (vv.7-8), is followed by “Jesus came” – and “from Nazareth” (v.9). Nazareth? “Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?” (Jn 1:45-46). Surprise! And disappointment, too. But this is “Jesus Christ, the Son of God” (Mk 1:1).

The Two Portraits of God

HE BAPTISM OF JESUS in the Jordan presents two portraits of God. When the name “Jesus” is mentioned for the first time in the narrative proper in Mark’s Gospel, it is as “Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee to be baptised by John” (v.9). Here’s a picture of the condescension of the humble God. Mark has already alluded to Jesus’ divinity right from the start (Mk 1:2-3). God revealed Himself in Jesus as Jesus of lowly and insignificant “Nazareth”. Jesus’ baptism with the Holy Spirit is superior to John’s baptism with water (Mk 1:8). But in Jesus’ baptism, the superior baptiser was baptised by the inferior baptiser. Divine humility. Next is a picture of the communion of the Triune God. When Jesus came out of the water in His baptism, the Holy Spirit descended upon Him (v.10) and the Father spoke to Him (v.11). Divine intimacy. The Holy Spirit’s descent upon Jesus was for His empowerment for ministry in wisdom, understanding, counsel, knowledge and power (Isa 11:1-2; Lk 4:1, 14). The Father affirmed Jesus’ person and ministry as “My beloved Son” whom He will sacrifice on the cross (echoing Gen 22:2), and as the Servant King in whom He is “well-pleased” (echoing Psa 2:7 and Isa 42:1).9 Here’s a discipleship model of walking in humility and intimacy with the Triune God.

The Devil After the Dove

ESUS’ EMPOWERMENT by the Dove (Mk 1:10) is immediately followed by His engagement with the devil (vv.12-13) – to be tempted by him in the “wilderness” for “40 days”. The wilderness was “a proving ground, a test of faithfulness and a promise of deliverance”10– like Israel’s 40-year wilderness journey (Deut 8:2-5). Jesus’ temptation points to two key characteristics of discipleship. Divine necessity: “The Spirit immediately drove Him out” to be tempted by Satan (v.12, ESV). It was both temptation and testing. The forceful word ekballō – force out, thrust out, drive out – occurs 16 times in Mark, 10 of which are used for driving out of demons (e.g. Mk 1:34; 3:15). Jesus being “compelled” (v.12, NLT) by the Spirit does not mean that Jesus was reluctant, but rather shows the idea of divine necessity11 and divine appointment. Difficult adversity: Jesus was “with the wild beasts” (v.13a), which symbolise the forces of evil. Mark’s Roman readers could see its allusion to “Nero’s savagery towards Christians”12. Roman historian and senator, Tacitus, wrote of Christians being “covered with hides of wild beasts and torn to pieces by dogs”13. The suffering disciples of Jesus saw that Christ, too, was thrown to wild beasts.14 And they were assured of God’s empowering and encouraging presence in their sufferings (cf. 2 Tim 2:1, 3), just as Jesus was continually taken care of by angels (v.13b).

The Gospel of God’s Kingship

O B S E RVAT I O N What constitutes “the gospel of God”?

Deeper Reflection

T GOD’S APPOINTED TIME for the fulfilment of His promises, Jesus came “preaching the gospel of God” (v.14-15). God Rules: The “gospel of God” is “a shorthand way of indicating the kingdom of God”15 (v.15). The “kingdom of God” – repeated 14 times in Mark, refers to “the kingly rule, the reign, the dominion and the sovereignty of God in the hearts of people”16. The Kingdom which seemed far in the future to most Jews had drawn near with the appearance of Jesus. Jesus is the “gospel of God” and “the kingdom in person”, who “not only brings the kingdom, He is the kingdom in Himself ”17. Man Repents: “Repent” (v.15b) means to change one’s thinking and understanding, which connotes “rational decision and wilful act as opposed to emotive feeling”18, and turning away from sin (Mk 1:4-5). “Repent” goes with “believe” – trust in and commitment to Jesus the King. John the Baptist being “handed over” (v.14a) has significance for discipleship in Mark. It foreshadowed Jesus being “betrayed” and “handed over” to be crucified (Mk 10:33; 14:41; 15:1, 15) and “plays a special role in Mark for the fate of the faithful”19. To “repent and believe” means to follow Jesus the King fully, which entails suffering. “Handed over” combines the sufferings of Jesus’ faithful followers and the superintending will of God that is operative through the sufferings (Mk 14:21)!20

LEARNING POINT The birds know where to look for seeds and worms for themselves and their young. The animals on land and water can find food too in the places where they live. They are part of God’s creation and He feeds them. So, if we are His children whom He loves dearly, how much more will He feed us? He knows that we need food and water to survive and He will make sure that we get them. Whenever we see food and drink on our table, we will know they come from God.

Follow Jesus and Fish People

O B S E RVAT I O N What significant observations can you make about Jesus calling Peter and Andrew, and James and John?

ERSE 15 is the Gospel in a nutshell.21 “Repent and believe in the gospel” (v.15) is immediately fleshed out in Jesus calling His early disciples to follow Him (vv.16-20) in “the kingdom of God” (v.15), that is, under His kingship and lordship. Biblical Christianity is summed up in two words: “Follow Me” (v.17a) – literally, “Come after Me”. In these two words, “Me” – Jesus Himself – is the most important word. To truly follow Jesus, we must know who Jesus is as He has revealed Himself in the Word of God, in relationship with Him and in reality. It is when we know who Jesus is that we know what it means to follow Him. Following Jesus is costly. The cost can be leaving something for Jesus’ sake – just as Peter and Andrew “left their nets”, their career (v.18), and James and John “left their father”, their loved ones (v.20). It means a radical change of priorities in life to give Jesus the King supreme loyalty. Ask yourself: “What is a high price that I have paid to follow Jesus?” Following Jesus and fishing people – “I will make you become fishers of men” (v.17b), that is, intentional disciplemaking – go together. We don’t just “become”, but He “will make you”. Jesus moulds our lives towards authentic discipleship, which can be painful (cf. Heb 12:11), but out of which flows intentional disciplemaking.

The Inbreaking of God’s Kingdom (1)

TUESDAY 11 February

S CRIPTURE Mark 1:21-26

O B S E RVAT I O N What significant observations can you make about Jesus’ encounter with the demon-possessed man in the synagogue (vv.23-26)?

ARK LOCATED the major portion of Jesus’ ministry in Galilee, which had a larger Gentile element (Matt 4:12-15) than in Judea,22 but in “the most Jewish region of Galilee”23. Jesus seemed to have made “Capernaum” (v.21a) “His headquarters” during much of His Galilean ministry.24 On a Sabbath day, Jesus taught in a “synagogue” – a place of informal worship and instruction for the Jews (v.21). And while He was teaching, there was a demonic manifestation in a man (v.23). The demon recognised Jesus’ divine Sonship – “the Holy One of God” − and His mission of coming to “destroy” “the entire demonic power structure”25 – “us” (v.24). In Mark, demons recognised who Jesus was long before any human being, including His disciples, did (Mk 8:29). Jesus restrained the demon: “Be quiet” (v.25b). In commanding for silence, Jesus “likely did not want to be known primarily as a wonder-worker or at all as a political or military deliverer because such a reputation would compromise His main mission of redemption”26. Jesus “rebuked” the demon (v.25a). In Judaism, rebuking of demons was a way “by which evil powers are brought to submission and the way is thereby prepared for the establishing of God’s righteous rule in the world”27. Jesus’ command “Come out of him” (v.25) resulted immediately in the demon coming “out of him” (v.26).

The Inbreaking of God’s Kingdom (2)

O B S E RVAT I O N What is the significance of Mark sandwiching verses 23 to 26 between verses 21 to 22 and verse 27?

ESUS’ MIRACLES play an important role in Mark, with 17 individual miracles recorded and others summarised. Mark “devoted more space in proportion to total length than any other Gospel”28 on Jesus’ miracles. These are “signs of the advent of the kingdom of God [Mk 1:15]”29 and especially the expelling of demons, which denotes the breaking down of Satan’s dominion and the establishing of God’s reign. The story of Jesus’ first public appearance in ministry is structured in this way: “teaching” with “authority” (vv.21-22) / expelling a demon (vv.23-26) / “teaching” with “authority” (v.27). Clearly, Jesus’ teaching with authority – in word (vv.21-22) and in works (v.27) − is Mark’s emphasis here. In Mark, the inbreaking of the kingdom of God in Jesus first began, not in the human arena, but in the cosmic arena, with Jesus showing His supremacy in the supernatural realm. Jesus’ “teaching” with “authority” is underscored by “He commands” and “they obey Him” (v.27). The “authority” of Jesus was astonishing (v.27 – “amazed”) “not as a display of Jesus’ grandeur but as a power of redemption for captives”30, that broken people can be restored to wholeness, and most importantly, restored to their Creator, in whose image they are made. Our authentic discipleship and intentional disciplemaking have to be clothed with this authority of the kingdom of God.

A Simple Act with Authority

THURSDAY 13 February

O B S E RVAT I O N What observations can you make about Jesus and the fever of Simon’s mother-in-law?

ESUS AND HIS DISCIPLES “came into the house of Simon and Andrew” “after they came out of the synagogue” (v.29). The words “after they came out of the synagogue” are more than just a narration of human movement from a location. These words bear theological significance. What had just happened in the synagogue? A power encounter between the Son of God and demonic powers, where Jesus demonstrated His supremacy over the whole cosmos by beginning to break down Satan’s dominion. Jesus “commands the unclean spirits”: “Come out of him” and “they obey Him” and “came out of him” (Mk 1:25-27). This was the Jesus who now “came into the house of Simon and Andrew”. Simon’s mother-in-law was “lying sick with a fever” (v.30a). Simon spoke to Jesus about it (v.30b), and it was followed by two simple actions of Jesus: “He came to her” and “raised her up by the hand” (v.31a; NIV – “helped her up”). And just by raising her up, “the fever left her” (v.31b). Simple as that, but absolutely powerful. And the healing was quick and complete. This simple act of Jesus speaks volumes about the authority and power of the Kingdom of God in Him. Having been healed, Peter’s mother-inlaw “served them” (v.31b) – a model of discipleship, which requires lowly service from all.31

Why Do I Look for Jesus?

O B S E RVAT I O N What significant observations can you make about Jesus and His ministry of healing diseases and expelling demons in verses 32 to 34 and verses 36 to 39?

HE EXORCISM IN THE SYNAGOGUE (Mk 1:23-27) resulted in “the news of Him spread everywhere into all the surrounding district of Galilee” (Mk 1:28). Jesus had become very popular, but it was never His intention. The popularity was inevitable because of the nature of His ministry. Jesus’ popularity resulted in an extensive ministry. The people “kept bringing” to Him the sick and demon-possessed to be healed (v.32) – to the point that “the whole city had gathered at the door” (v.33). On the following day, Jesus’ disciples looked for Him to tell Him, “Everyone is looking for You” (vv.36-37). Why was everyone looking for Jesus? To have their needs met. Healing diseases and expelling demons were a divine necessity in Jesus’ ministry, but it was never to meet felt needs. We must keep in mind Mark 1:15. Jesus’ disciples were excited over “Everyone is looking for You.” They “wanted Jesus to take advantage of His growing popularity and perform more miracles”32. Jesus’ primary mission was not to be a miracleworker, but a Redeemer to redeem people into the Kingdom of God through “repent and believe in the gospel” (v.38; Mk 1:15). The people “apparently had no interest in Jesus beyond His miracles or any interest in coming under the reign of God”33. Why do I look for Jesus?

Spending Personal Time with God

SATURDAY 15 February

S CRIPTURE Mark 1:32-39

O B S E RVAT I O N What is the significance of verse 35 in the context of verses 32 to 39?

ESUS SPENDING TIME TO PRAY – to have communion with His Father (v.35), is sandwiched by His extensive and intensive ministry (vv.32-34 and vv.36-39). This structure shows clearly that central in our lives in all that we do, because it is crucial, must be spending personal time with God. Note the intentionality and discipline of Jesus: “He got up, left and went away”. It is flawed thinking that spending time with God “early in the morning, while it is still dark” is sacrosanct, as if this is the time that God is nearer to us, only speaks to us and hears us. It should be what works best for each individual, who is made differently by God. Some are early birds, while others are nocturnal creatures. The main thing is that we spend personal time with God. I practise a set of principles in spending personal time with God: Spend PRUMBS Time with God. Priority Time: It is the most important time of my day. Regular Time: Keep it daily and consistent. Unhurried Time: God does not conform to our high-tech, busy, speedy and hurried lifestyle. Much Time: Have you reached a point of frequently spending an hour with God in a day? Best Time: It is the time of the day when we best concentrate. Scheduled Time: We schedule for almost everything. How much more the most important time of my day!

LEARNING POINT Shelters provide all living animals with protection from the heat of the sun, storms and rain and from attacks by predators. We, too, need a place to live in. If not, we will get sick from the rain or sun. More than physical protection, a shelter provides a home where families can stay close together, where we can love and care for one another. God knows everyone needs a home. The house that we live in is a blessing from Him.

ACTION POINT Learn to take care of the house that you live in. Tidy up your room and make it a cosy place to sleep. This is one of the ways to take care of what God has given us.

Compassionate Ministry by Divine Necessity

O B S E RVAT I O N What significant observations can you make about the leper’s encounter with Jesus?

Deeper Reflection

LEPER CAME TO JESUS for cleansing of his leprosy (v.40). “Leprosy” in the Bible (Lev 13-14) is “a general term covering various chronic skin diseases and is not limited to Hansen’s disease as is the contemporary use of the word”34. In biblical times, lepers were robbed of not just their health, but also “their name, occupation, habits, family and fellowship, and worshiping community”35. The leper falling on his knees and begging Jesus “betrays the long humiliation of his affliction”36. He had faith in Jesus that “You can make me clean”. The only question was, “If You are willing”. It is profoundly human that we do not doubt God’s ability to save us, but only His willingness.37 It is a real tension in faith. “Moved with compassion”, Jesus was “willing” to cleanse the leper (vv.41-42). Then Jesus “sternly warned” the cleansed leper to “say nothing to anyone” (vv.43-44). But ignoring Jesus’ warning, he gave Him the unwanted widespread publicity, such that He “stayed out in unpopulated areas” (v.45). For Jesus, it was all about alignment to His Father’s intention, process and timing for His mission, and not seeking to be relevant to people’s needs. The compassionate Jesus is able to heal all diseases and meet all needs, but not always “willing”. He works by divine necessity.

The Holy Touching the Unholy

O B S E RVAT I O N What is the theological significance of Jesus touching the leper with His hand (v.41) in the light of the Law of Moses concerning lepers (Lev 13:45-46; Num 5:1-4)?

N BIBLICAL TIMES, leprosy rendered the victims religiously and socially unclean. According to the Mosaic Law, a leper “shall live alone…outside the camp” (Lev 13:45-46). No one would want to come near a leper. But when the leper approached Jesus, Jesus “stretched out His hand and touched” him (v.41). By touching an unclean person, Jesus made Himself ceremonially unclean. According to the Mosaic Law, when a person unknowingly touches any sort of human uncleanness, “he becomes unclean” (Lev 5:3). But here, Jesus deliberately touched the leper. Could He not have easily just spoken, “Be cleansed!”, and the leper would be cleansed? Yes, He could. But He chose to touch him physically instead. There is profound theological significance in this touch. God commanded that “every leper…who is unclean” must be sent “outside the camp so that they will not defile the camp where I dwell in their midst” (Num 5:2-3). It all has to do with God’s holy presence among His people. But now Jesus, “the Holy One of God” (Mk 1:24), “Immanuel…God with us” (Matt 1:23), touched an unclean leper. On the cross, God “made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf…” (2 Cor 5:21). More than the Holy touching the unholy, the Holy became unholy for our redemption.

Jesus’ Ministry and the Crowds

HEN IT WAS KNOWN that Jesus was at home at Capernaum, “many were gathered together, so that there was no longer room, not even near the door” (Mk 2:1-2a). Mark refers to crowds nearly 40 times before chapter 10 to indicate Jesus’ popularity in Galilee.38 Crowds formed audiences for Jesus’ teaching and were objects of His compassion, but Mark “never describes them turning to Jesus in repentance and belief ” as the Gospel required (Mk 1:15), and they were “not a measure of success” despite Jesus’ popularity.39 The crowd at Jesus’ home “no doubt flocked to Him because they wanted to see Him perform more miracles”40. But, Jesus was “speaking the word to them” instead (Mk 2:2b). Mark recorded 17 individual miracles of Jesus and not much on the content of His teaching. But this does not mean that Jesus’ ministry of works is emphasised more than that of the Word. Mark uses the word “teach” (didaskō) 15 times out of 17 to refer to Jesus teaching – proportionally more than Matthew and Luke. “The word” (Mk 2:2) is the Word of God concerning the nearness of the Kingdom of God and the necessity for repentance and belief (Mk 1:14-15).41 The works of Jesus demonstrate the authority and power of God’s Kingdom, and the Word demands submission to God’s kingship.

The “Getting to Jesus” Faith

IVE CONFLICT STORIES are told (Mk 2:1-3:12) after Jesus’ return to Capernaum (v.1). In Jesus’ healing of the paralytic (Mk 2:1-12), “faith” is mentioned for the first time in Mark: “Jesus seeing their faith” (v.5). Standing against the backdrop of the big crowd gathering around Jesus (v.2), this “faith” is discipleship faith – an illustration of “believe in the gospel” (Mk 1:15), which means following Jesus (Mk 1:16-20). Crowding around Jesus, however enthusiastically, is not the same as being a disciple of Jesus. Are you committed to Jesus, or just crowding around Him? The crowd stands and observes, but disciples commit themselves to faith in action, as demonstrated by the paralytic and his four friends.42 Faith is “active trust that Jesus is sufficient for one’s deepest and most heartfelt needs”43. “Their faith” (v.5) is a persistent faith in the face of obstacles or opposition. It is a faith that will do anything to get to Jesus. The four friends circumvented the crowd and removed the roof, showering dirt and disrespect on the people below,44 to ensure that their paralysed friend got to Jesus (vv.3-4). “Their [plural] faith” (v.5) is a community faith. We can trust in God together with one who is struggling in his faith while going through a crisis. Jesus shows that He honours such faith.

Jesus and Forgiving of Sins

ON OF MAN” occurs 14 times in Mark and only from the mouth of Jesus. In three instances, Jesus refers to Himself as coming in judgment with great power and glory as in the vision of Daniel (Mk 8:38; 13:26; 14:62; Dan 7:13-14). Twice, the title refers to Jesus’ earthly authority to forgive sins (Mk 2:10) and supersede the Sabbath (Mk 2:28). But its most prominent usage is in the nine times with regard to Jesus’ suffering (Mk 8:31; 9:9, 12, 31; 10:33, 45; 14:21 [twice], 41). It is in the story of Jesus healing the paralytic that “Son of Man” is first mentioned in Mark (v.10). Jesus’ words to the paralytic, “Your sins are forgiven” (v.5) stirred up controversy with the scribes. They charged Jesus with the gravest possible offense punishable by death (Lev 24:16) – “blaspheming” − basing on the truth, “Who can” have the ability to “forgive sins but God alone?” (v.7). Jesus claimed to have not just the ability, but the “authority” to forgive sins (v.10). Jesus was virtually claiming Himself to be divine. However, in Mark, “the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins” is theologically contingent on the divine necessity of “the Son of Man” to be condemned to death as a ransom for many for the divine forgiveness of sins (Mk 10:33, 45). For “without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness” (Heb 9:22).

Why “Your Sins Are Forgiven”?

SATURDAY 22 February

O B S E RVAT I O N What is the significance of Jesus saying to the paralytic “Son, your sins are forgiven” (v.5)?

Deeper Reflection

EFORE HEALING THE PARALYTIC, Jesus said to him, “Son, your sins are forgiven” (v.5). Here Jesus explicitly shows the theological relationship between sin and sickness. The paralytic was brought to Jesus to be healed of his physical condition, not for his sins to be forgiven. “Your sins” appears to speak to specific sins, rather than to the general condition of sin. Jesus knew of particular sins in the paralytic, unknown to him, that were related to his paralysis. And Jesus saw the necessity of his sins to be forgiven before his paralysis could be healed. It was when his sins were forgiven that the healing took effect (vv.10-12). While theologically, sickness and death are a result of sin, and hence a reality in the fallen world, it does not mean that every sickness and death are caused by specific sins in a person’s life (e.g. Jn 9:1-3). Nonetheless, Jesus’ words “Your sins are forgiven” affirm the holistic nature of Jesus’ healing ministry. The arrival of the Kingdom of God in Jesus (Mk 1:15) will mean “the full restoration of God’s creation, both physically and spiritually”45. “Your sins are forgiven” is God dealing with the root cause of all disease and death – sinful rebellion against God − and it is essential for all true healing.

How Does Jesus See Me?

O B S E RVAT I O N What are the contrasts between the two scenes in verses 12 to 13 and verse 14?

Deeper Reflection

HE CROWD’S RESPONSE to Jesus healing the paralytic was: “They were all amazed” and were “glorifying God” for something never seen before (v.12). Then Jesus left for the seashore and “all the people were coming to Him”, and He was “teaching them” the Word of God (v.13). What was the response that Jesus wanted from the crowd regarding the Kingdom of God? “Repent and believe in the gospel” (Mk 1:15), that is, “Follow Me” (Mk 1:16-20). What Jesus wanted was not amazement at the power of the Kingdom of God, but allegiance to the kingship of God. So immediately, Mark introduces an individual, “Levi the son of Alphaeus” (v.14) and his encounter with Jesus – to contrast the crowd with superficial contact with Jesus. While Levi was “sitting in the tax booth”, he heard a gentle but authoritative voice, “Follow Me!” Mark two very important words: “He saw”. Did Jesus just “saw” incidentally “as He passed by”? Or, was He intentionally looking for the kind of person who would follow Him fully? “He saw” recalls how “He saw Simon and Peter” (Mk 1:16) and how “He saw James…and John” (Mk 1:19). And in all these “He saw” incidents, Jesus called them to “Follow Me!” Prayerfully reflect on this: How does Jesus see me? A Levi, or just one among the crowd? What does Jesus want to see in me?

Following Jesus Is Redemptive Grace

O B S E RVAT I O N What is the significance of the thrice-repeated following of Jesus (vv.14-15) in the context of verses 14 to 17?

EVI THE TAX COLLECTOR began his journey of following Jesus (v.14) by inviting “Jesus and His disciples” to dine with “many tax collectors and sinners” (v.15). And these “many tax collectors and sinners” “were following Him” (v.15). Was this following of Jesus similar to or different from the crowds that were “coming to Him” (Mk 1:45; 2:13)? It is clear in the immediate context that this “following Him” is defined by Jesus’ “Follow Me” and Levi’s “followed Him” (v.14), and reinforced by “Jesus and His disciples” dinning with these people, with the words “His disciples” appearing here the first time in Mark. It is a given that in this discipleship communion, Jesus was teaching and conversing with His new disciples on the Kingdom of God (Mk 1:15). “Tax collectors” were despised and hated for their “dishonesty, use of intimidation and even force, and contact with Gentiles”46. And “sinners” were “simply labourers and commoners, who were too busy, too poor or too ignorant to live up to the rules of the religious authorities”47. Both groups were considered as unclean by the religious authorities (v.16). Jesus “did not come to call the righteous, but sinners” who “need a physician” (v.17). Following Jesus is redemptive. It is marked by discipleship contriteness. “The righteous” are the selfrighteous who see no need for God’s grace and mercy.

The Celebration and the Cross

O B S E RVAT I O N What was Jesus talking about in His response to the question of fasting that was posed to Him?

OR JESUS, the issue in the question on fasting that was posed to Him was incompatibility, as communicated through the wedding feast parable: “While the bridegroom [Jesus] was with them, the attendants of the bridegroom [His disciples] cannot fast” (vv.18-20). The wedding is “a symbol of the salvation associated with the Kingdom of God” “through joyful association with Jesus”48. So, fasting is out of the question at a wedding feast.49 Then, Jesus interjected the alien thought of the bridegroom being forcibly “taken away” from the wedding celebration (v.20a) – a veiled allusion to His crucifixion. Jesus being “taken away” from His disciples means “there will be days when Jesus is far from them, as was the Father from Jesus in His passion (Mk 14:36; 15:34)”50. And hence, their subsequent fasting (v.20b) of perseverance and faithfulness in suffering the discipleship cross of “the hiddenness and silence of God”51. Jesus further pointed out that the “old” teaching and practices of Judaism were incompatible with the “new wine” of the Kingdom of God in Him (vv.21-22).52 The mindset and values of the world are incompatible with the Kingdom of God. In our discipleship and Gospel mission, we must be careful not to make the Kingdom of God compatible with the world in our attempt to be relevant.

Sabbath Was Made for Man

THURSDAY 27 February

S CRIPTURE Mark 2:23-28

O B S E RVAT I O N What observations can you make about the Sabbath in Jesus’ conflict with the Pharisees?

Deeper Reflection

ESUS’ FOURTH CONFLICT53 with the religious leaders, over keeping the Sabbath, reveals God in two ways. Jesus’ disciples picked the heads of grain from the grainfields to eat on the Sabbath (v.23). But the Pharisees charged them for “doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath” (v.24). We can observe the letter of God’s commandments and fail to see the spirit of the commandments. God’s commandments are to be kept for the well-being of people and not just for the commandments’ sake. Jesus cited the Scriptures on David and his companions eating the priest’s “consecrated bread” which was “not lawful” by the letter of the law (v.26). But it was lawful for them to eat because they were “in need” and “hungry” (v.25). What Jesus’ disciples did was following God’s Word in Deuteronomy 23:24-25 (see also Deut 24:17-22), which shows God’s compassion for the needy. In the Old Testament, not keeping the Sabbath would result in the death penalty (Exo 31:14-15). Why was it so serious? Notice how God looks at His commandment: “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath” (v.27). God’s concern for our bodies – the person as a whole (see Rom 12:1): To God, rest for our bodies is so important that in the Old Testament, failing to do so was punishable by death.

Jesus’ Compassion and the Cross

O B S E RVAT I O N What is the warning that is surfaced in Jesus’ conflict with the religious leaders over keeping the Sabbath?

Deeper Reflection

HIS FIFTH CONFLICT of Jesus with the religious authorities serves us a warning: We can be seeking to be right before God and yet have “hardness of heart” towards people (v.5a) at the same time. In the synagogue, the Pharisees were more concerned with seeking to “accuse” Jesus (vv.1-2) than worshipping God. The scribal rule they followed permitted healing on the Sabbath only when life was in danger, which certainly was not the case for the man with a withered hand.54 For them, the healing of this man could wait. But Jesus saw something deeper. It was an issue of “to save a life” (v.4). For Jesus, to “heal” is “to save a life”, and not to do so is equivalent to “to kill”. And with “anger”, He “grieved” at their insensitivity towards suffering (v.5b). Mark concludes the five conflict stories (Mk 2:1-3:6) with his first explicit reference to Jesus’ death (v.6). The compassion of Jesus is free, but costly. Jesus decided to heal with no consideration for personal consequences to Himself. The Pharisees and the Herodians conspired ogether against Jesus and sought to “destroy” Him (v.6), to “destroy as one would do to an animal”55. Tension in Walking by Divine Appointment

O B S E RVAT I O N What does Mark’s summary of Jesus’ ministry beyond Capernaum (vv.7-12) show us about Jesus?

HIS SUMMARY (vv.7-12) of Jesus’ ministry beyond Capernaum (Mk 2:1-3:6) shows its extensive geographical influence with “a great multitude” coming to Him from Galilee and Judea, from Idumea, Transjordan, Tyre and Sidon, “having heard all that He was doing” (vv.7-8). The summary shows within Jesus the tension in walking by divine appointment. Walking by divine appointment is not straightforward and smooth. Jesus under constraint: “Jesus withdrew to the sea with His disciples” (v.7) “to escape further harassment from the religious authorities”56 – especially when they were plotting to “destroy” Him (v.6). It was not out of fear, but in wisdom. Jesus stayed in a “boat” to keep “the great multitude” “from crowding Him” (v.9). “Crowding” is better read as “pressing” or “crushing”57, or “pushing and shoving”58. Jesus with compassion: The crowd sought Jesus because of His healings, not to submit themselves to the kingship of God.59 Jesus nonetheless “healed many” and allowed “all those who had afflictions…to touch Him” (v.10), albeit with His desire unfulfilled. Jesus in command: Demons “fell down before Him” in homage to a superior and acknowledged Him as “the Son of God” (v.11). Jesus’ command to silence (v.12) demonstrates His authority over demonic powers. And yet Jesus could not force the crowds to submit to the kingship of God.
