As we lead Covenant EFC towards Vision 2028 and our 50th Jubilee Anniversary, God has given us Acts 20:28 as our spiritual anchor:

“PAY CAREFUL ATTENTION

to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood.” As church leaders and members, we are to pay careful attention to our hearts’ condition and to our triune God. At last year’s Listening Retreat, God impressed a spiritual burden upon us for 2018: WE ARE CHURCH: PRAY AND REPENT! We are CHURCH We believe God has called us to be One Church with Multiple Centres and pursue the A.D.I.D. of A Certain Kind within each local centre through small groups. We will enhance the small group strategy so that we can make disciples who make disciples. This year, we were led to preach on the book of Acts, as we rediscover what the Church is all about. We Are Church: PRAY! I (Rev Tan Kay Kiong) received a distinct picture of Moses praying in the mountain with his hands supported by Aaron and Hur. As I read the account in Exodus 17, the burden was clear:

1. We Are Under Attack (Exo 17:8) Many of us are living defeated lives stained by sin and the affairs of this world. The devil has launched his arsenal of attacks against every possible area of our lives. 2. We Must Fight with the Weapons of God (Exo 17:9b) The staff in Moses’ hand was the staff of God. Formerly used to goad sheep, this once ordinary staff became God’s weapon to fight spiritual battles. We must put on God’s spiritual armour so that we can stand against the devil’s schemes. 3. We Must Fight with the Weapons of God and Hold Up Our Hands (Exo 17:11a) Joshua and his troops were fighting with all their might against the enemies, but the secret to their victory was Moses’ hands raised to God in desperate intercession. Aaron and Hur helped Moses keep his hands up. We must hold up our hands in intercession for spiritual victory in our lives. We Are Church: Pray and REPENT! There is no true prayer without REPENTANCE. “Bring forth fruits in keeping with repentance.” − Luke 3:8. God spoke to me (Rev Tony Yeo) through the book of Joel: 1. Repent humbly – put on sackcloth, wail before the altar, declare a holy fast and call a sacred assembly (Joel 1:13-14). 2. Repent wholeheartedly – rend your heart and not your garments (Joel 2:12-13). Return to God with all our hearts for He is gracious and compassionate! 3. Repent urgently – in the light of the day of the Lord and His coming judgement (Joel 3:3-14). We believe that God will speak to each of you personally as you spend daily devotional time with the Lord in His Word and in prayer. This Devotional Journal (DJ) has been designed to help you in this. We pray and trust that God will greatly bless you as you use this DJ daily, and His Spirit will guide and direct your prayers such that God will be pleased to answer them and display His glory in you and in our church for the advance of His Kingdom in Singapore and beyond. Walk in Love

O BSERVATION How would you contrast Judas Iscariot’s departure to betray Jesus (v.31) with Jesus’ command to the disciples to love one another (vv.34-35)?

Deeper Reflection LOVE FOR ONE ANOTHER is the mark that distinguishes true disciples of Christ from the “dog-eat-dog” ways of our fallen world. Non-disciples invariably think and act according to the innate craving to satisfy their personal desires as the first priority in life. They live as egocentric, selfcentred “lovers of self”, not “lovers of God” (2 Tim 3:2-5). When the world sees the distinctive characteristic of Christian disciples’ love for one another and selfless giving, the disciples of Christ will be quickly identified as such (v.35). The Son of God, Jesus Christ’s death on the cross of Calvary demonstrated a totally sacrificial, self-giving love from God the Creator that prevails even in the face of treacherous betrayal and wicked rejection by His creatures. Why would the Son of God willingly hang and die on the cross for the sins of rebels? When a person believes in Jesus, divine love penetrates that believer’s heart and begins to break the pride and self-centredness therein. God’s love begins to enable the believer to start expressing this divine love to other people. This love demonstrates to the world the transformation that Jesus makes in a believer’s life.1 Our decision to love others reflects our love for God (1 Jn 4:20-21). A disciple who walks in love will consider the interests of others first (Phil 2:3-4) and place the needs of others before his own. In our ministry, we must exemplify this love personally and as a community. We need to find ways to provide an environment at home and in the church where such love is nurtured, where it is central in our relationships and reflected in our activities.2

Bear Much Fruit

O BSERVATION Why is it crucial for the branch to abide in the vine so as to bear fruit (vv.4-7)?

Deeper Reflection ANOTHER MARK OF A TRUE DISCIPLE is fruit-bearing, seen in several dimensions3: The fruitfulness of character,4 of soul-winning and spiritual multiplication,5 and of righteousness and good works.6 Jesus asserts, “By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be My disciples” (v.8). True disciples bear fruit because “true attachment to the Vine brings true life to the branch”7. Discipleship, like fruit-bearing, is “not static, but a growing and developing way of life”8. Fruit-bearing does not make someone become a disciple of Christ. Rather, in fruit-bearing they show they are true disciples.9 Fruit-bearing in the spiritual life flows from abiding in Jesus’ Word of truth for all arenas of life (Jn 8:31-32), from being deeply touched by Jesus’ love and thus willingly loving others (Jn 13:34-35).10 For personal, family and church life: In the new life, we will bear fruit naturally in keeping with this new life. Can each of us say, as Christian scholar Michael Wilkins does, that “My personal responsibility is to nurture myself on the Word, drink of the Living Water, bask in the Son and be protected from the elements of the world through the fellowship of others who have life”?11 In ministry, each one must care for other “fruit trees” by supplying conducive environments for healthy growth. Good fruit is a natural outcome of the tree’s condition, for “a diseased tree cannot bear good fruit” (Matt 7:19). What we can do is to nurture each tree towards health, that is to nurture and edify one another to become more Christlike. Will you invest your life to do this?

Equip One Another for Ministry

O BSERVATION With Christ as the head and His Church the body, what is God’s purpose in giving diverse gifts and roles to each believer?

Deeper Reflection GOD CALLS CHRISTIAN BELIEVERS to unite and equip one another in love and towards maturity. Regrettably, the 2,000 years of Church history have seen many schisms and divisions, often caused by human-centred agendas. As Christ’s disciples, we are in fact called to live in a manner worthy of God’s gracious calling (vv.1-6). In humility, gentleness, patience and love, we must be eager to maintain oneness. While Christ the head is perfect, the body remains in the process of maturing and is to be built up by the various ministries of the Church into one “full-grown man”12. Ministries, whether of apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, teachers or other roles, are designed for one purpose − to equip Christ’s disciples, for the work of ministry and for building up the body of Christ (v.12). In the New Testament, the word “equip” (Greek translation: kartatismon) (v.8) has several meanings. It can mean: (1) to equip an army, (2) to set broken bones, (3) to mend frayed nets, (4) to furnish an empty house, or (5) to restore to mint condition.13 Thus, kartatismon includes restoring broken lives! We do not just disciple the strong, but the weak ones too,14 so that the whole body is built up. Every disciple − every joint, every part in the body − must be equipped (v.16). And when each one fulfils their function properly, it makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love. May we awaken to the call to minister with loving mutuality in this redeemed body of Christ, and be authentic disciples and intentional disciplemakers of “A Certain Kind” − A Christ-mastered Kind!

WHY MUST I BE KIND TO OTHERS? Be kind to others because God is kind to us. Scripture: Titus 3:4; Ephesians 4:32 ACTIVITY BITE Give each of your family members a cup and then pour some coloured jelly beans into a bowl. Get everyone to take turns sharing the different kind things that God has done for them, for example, “God did a kind thing by __________________”. Once they are done sharing, put a jelly bean into their cup. CHAT TIME Q1: What are some of the simple ways that God shows His kindness to us? Q2: Have you done any kind acts lately? If so, share what you did. Q3: Why does God wants us to be kind to others? LEARNING POINT Each of us has done wrong things, but that’s where God’s kindness comes in. Because He loves us, He sent Jesus to earth to die on the cross and take the punishment for our sins. We didn’t earn God’s kindness, but He gave it anyway. He doesn’t show kindness to us because we’ve done enough good things to deserve it. Rather, He shows us kindness because He loves us. Ephesians 4:32 tells us to be kind. We can follow God’s lead and show kindness to others. By doing so, we reflect God’s kindness to everyone. ACTION POINT Think of some acts of kindness you want to do. Each time you practise an act of kindness, put a sticker into a small container. Watch the number of stickers grow over time. Fishers of People

S CRIPTURE

Matthew 4:17-25

O BSERVATION What did Jesus mean when He said, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men” (v.19)?

Deeper Reflection FOLLOWING JESUS means leaving your former preoccupations in order to do the things that He did and make His mission your own. After Jesus called His first disciples, He showed them by example how to minister to people by preaching the Gospel, teaching about the Kingdom of God, healing all kinds of sicknesses and delivering those who were demon possessed. Jesus also privately explained to the disciples His actions and teachings. In this way, Jesus raised up a group of apprentices equipped for ministry. He then commissioned them as His representatives and delegated His authority to them. Thus, Jesus made His disciples “fishers of men”. They were trained to “catch” people and draw them with the Gospel into the Kingdom of God. Fishermen in those days used circular nets with weights around the circumference. Like fishermen, the disciples would have to cast their nets wide, that is, to preach the Gospel to the multitudes and draw in all the people – men, women, young, old and of all ethnicities and social statuses – who repent of their sins and believe in Jesus. The disciples would later fully understand that the death and resurrection of the sinbearing Saviour was the basis of people’s salvation from God’s wrath and righteous judgement upon sinners. After Jesus’ resurrection from the dead and ascension into heaven, the disciples learnt about the indispensability of the Holy Spirit’s empowering for Gospel proclamation to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:8; 2:1-4). That task requires that every new believer truly follows Jesus and be made into a fisher of people, and every local church embraces disciplemaking as its core mission until the Lord returns.

Catching People

S CRIPTURE

Luke 5:1-11

O BSERVATION What would enable Christians to “catch men” (i.e. win lost souls into God’s Kingdom with the Gospel) as Jesus intends (v.10)?

Deeper Reflection HERE WE CAN SEE at least five things that enable Christians to win a great number of lost souls for Christ. (1) Willingness to launch our boat: Obey the Lord Jesus when He leads. Simon and his friends had already finished fishing and returned to shore. They were in the midst of washing their nets. Yet Simon was willing to launch his boat at Christ’s command. (2) Willingness to let down our nets: Submit to the Lordship of Jesus. Simon was almost certain of the futility of letting down his nets at this time and location. Yet at Jesus’ word, Simon was willing to let down the nets. (3) Willingness to believe in God’s wisdom and power: Trust not in your own understanding, but trust in God. Simon and his friends were professional fishermen who had worked hard overnight, utilising all their knowledge and experience and doing all within their power to bring in a catch, but still they caught nothing. Yet Simon was willing to trust that Jesus knew what He was doing and had good reasons for His command to let down the nets. (4) Willingness to partner with other Christians: Collaborate readily with fellow Christians. Simon was willing to ask for help and his partners were willing to come quickly to his aid. They did not let pride or fatigue hinder their collaboration to bring in the big catch of fish. There was no apathy or indifference towards others’ work, because they saw themselves as being on the same team. (5) Willingness to prioritise God’s mission: Pursue God’s agenda rather than your own. Simon and his friends left everything to follow Jesus.

S CRIPTURE

John 6:3-13, 32-40

O BSERVATION What was the significance of Jesus feeding the 5,000 men with the loaves of bread?

Deeper Reflection IN THIS ACCOUNT, Jesus performed a miracle by multiplying five barley loaves and two fish to feed 5,000 men to their fill, with 12 baskets of bread fragments left over. Here, Jesus miraculously provided the large crowd with more than enough for their physical hunger. But Jesus would soon provide the world with a way to receive from Him more than enough for their soul’s hunger. A little later, Jesus taught the crowd that He was the bread of life who came down from heaven to give life to those who would believe in Him and to forever satisfy their hunger and thirst (vv.33-35). The barley loaves satisfied the people’s physical hunger and even then, only temporarily. In contrast, Jesus satisfies eternally the deep longing of the souls of all who come to Him in faith. Jesus promised that He would never cast out whoever comes to Him (v.37). The fact that the feeding of the 5,000 was done on a day when the Passover was approaching (v.4) alludes to Jesus’ crucifixion on a subsequent day of preparation of the Passover (Jn 19:14-18). Jesus’ death on the cross and subsequent resurrection on the third day brought to all who believed in Him the gift of eternal life and the hope of their own resurrection on the day of Jesus’ second coming (vv.39-40).

One People under One Shepherd

O BSERVATION Who was Jesus referring to when he said, “I have other sheep that are not of this fold” (v.16)?

Deeper Reflection THE GOOD NEWS OF JESUS CHRIST first came to the Jewish people. The first Christians were Jews who recognised that Jesus was their promised Messiah who was prophesied about in the Hebrew Scriptures, and believed in Him. Then according to God’s will and plan, the Gospel went also to the Gentiles through the Spirit-led and Spirit-empowered proclamation of the Gospel by Jewish Christians. The Gentiles who would believe in Jesus are the “other sheep that are not of this fold” but who nonetheless belong to Jesus. God’s will is for both Jewish and Gentile believers to become one people under one shepherd – the Lord Jesus Christ (v.16). In John 3:16-17, we are told the reason why God gave His unique, one-of-a-kind Son – to rescue people from their sins and consequent condemnation. It was because “God so loved the world” (Jn 3:16). This phrase could mean the manner or the degree which God loved the world, or both. “The world” here refers to the human race, made up of both Jews and Gentiles. As such, it was God’s will all along for both Jewish and Gentile believers in His Son to constitute the one people who belong to Jesus, their shepherd. Until He returns at God’s appointed time, the ascended Jesus is still bringing people into His fold. How has He chosen to do so? During our Lord’s ministry on earth, He began to do and teach in His body concerning the Kingdom of God and the way of salvation, and after His ascension, He continues to do and teach through His body, the Church (Acts 1:1-2).

Matthew 24:4-14

O BSERVATION What will happen in and to the nations of the world before Jesus returns at the end of the age?

Deeper Reflection JESUS WAS TEACHING HIS DISCIPLES about the end times. There will be many false Christs (v.5) and false prophets (v.11) who will lead many people astray from the true Christian faith. The former identify themselves as the true Christ, while the latter say things that God has not said or make false predictions about the future. There will be wars actual and threatened, as well as increased hostilities between nations (vv.6-7a). Each nation will fiercely protect its own domestic interests. Military muscles will be frequently flexed. The economically powerful nations will seek to dominate and exploit the weaker ones. Foreign relations will be based on distrust. Cooperation and peace will be elusive in such a geopolitical climate. There will be high incidences of famines and earthquakes in various parts of the world (v.7b), perhaps even in places where such natural calamities have not occurred in the past. Distress, trouble and affliction will test the believersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; faith and the persecution of Christians will be experienced throughout the world (v.9). As a result, many will turn away from following Christ and have no qualms betraying and harming one another (v.10). Lawlessness will likely be seen in the enactment of unjust legislation, the non-enactment of righteous laws and the flagrant disregard for existing laws coupled with non-enforcement by the authorities. Consequently, people will seek self-preservation and increasingly look only to their own interests and not the interests of others (v.12). However, in parallel with the increase of chaos and trouble, the Gospel will advance strongly to all nations before the end comes and all those who remain true to Jesus will be saved (vv.13-14).

O BSERVATION Who constitutes the â&#x20AC;&#x153;great multitudeâ&#x20AC;? (v.9)?

Deeper Reflection WE ARE GIVEN A VISION OF THE END when Christ returns. The vastness and glory of this glimpse of ultimate reality takes our breath away. A worldwide family of God, united by faith in Jesus Christ the Lamb of God, joyously declaring His victory for the salvation of His people. A great multitude comprising spiritual brothers and sisters from every nation, that is, about 195 countries15 and who speak in more than 6,909 languages16. What a marvelous feeling to be part of this numberless congregation whose God is the Creator of creation and whose Lord and Saviour is Jesus Christ, the Son of God! What joy and exhilaration to worship together the only true God and Jesus Christ who was sent to save sinners by His atoning sacrifice on the cross! Washed spotless by the blood of the Lamb, we stand in pure white robes of divine righteousness to give our total allegiance to God and all our praise to the Lamb! Notice the great multitude of believers are not alone in giving worship to God. Close to the throne of God, all the angels, the 24 elders17 (representing all the redeemed people of God) and the four living creatures, prostrate before God and ascribe blessing, glory, wisdom, thanksgiving, honour, power and might to God forever. He alone is worthy of constant, ceaseless and consummate praise and worship by His creation and His redeemed people from every generation and every nation!

DOES SHOWING KINDNESS MAKE OTHERS FEEL VALUED? God shows kindness to everyone because we are valuable to Him. Scripture: Matthew 10:29-31; Luke 6:31 ACTIVITY BITE Pass some small blank cards and coloured markers to your family members. Ask them to design “Kindness Award” cards for each other. Then give them out and explain to each person why he or she deserves it. Make sure everyone gets at least one “Kindness Award” card. CHAT TIME Q1: How do you feel when someone shows kindness to you? Q2: Do you feel valued when you receive the award cards? Why or why not? Q3: According to Matthew 10:29-31, what does it mean when God says that you are more valuable than many sparrows? LEARNING POINT Kindness is showing others they are valuable by how we treat them. God certainly thinks people are valuable. Didn’t the Bible say that we are more valuable than many sparrows in Matthew 10:29-31? If God cares for just one sparrow, how much more He will care for us. Sometimes it is hard for us to show kindness to those who are naughty or unlovable, but we should follow God’s lead. We show kindness to others not only because we feel like it, but because it is the right thing to do. Just as God values everyone, we can also show kindness to others to help them feel valued. One kind act deserves another. When you know that God is kind to you, or know how good it feels when someone is kind to you, it makes you want to show kindness to others too. Wishes for the Lunar New Year

S CRIPTURE

3 John 1:1-15

O BSERVATION What was the prayer-wish of the elder John as he wrote this epistle to Gaius (vv.2-4)?

Deeper Reflection CHINESE NEW YEAR is upon us. As part of the Chinese custom, many of us offer well-wishes to family, relatives and friends as we make our rounds visiting one another during this special time of the year. A common greeting we exchange with one another is gōng xǐ fā cái (literally, “Congratulations, may you be prosperous this Lunar New Year!”). Is this the most appropriate greeting for Chinese Christians during the Lunar New Year season? Should we wish for material prosperity for one another during this festive season? Culture and Christianity do not necessarily have to conflict but can intersect compatibly. Exchanging well-wishes and goodwill is certainly practised in the Bible (see Paul’s well-wishes for the churches following his salutation: “grace and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ”, 1 Cor 1:3). As Christians, we recognise that God is the source of all blessings. Often, underlying every wish is a desire for God’s blessing. But we do not only wish for material prosperity. There are many other ways we can extend wishes to fellow Christians. Taking the cue from the apostle John, we can wish that their spiritual lives grow and flourish in the coming new year (“it goes well” with Gaius’ soul, v.2). Instead of wishing for tangible, material wealth, John wishes for that which is intangible but eternal. As John closes the letter, he wishes Gaius, “peace be with you” (v.15). In Chinese churches today, believers still use the word “peace” as the dominant expression of greeting one another. We certainly can be more thoughtful and biblical in greeting one another during this Chinese New Year.

A New Beginning: Rejoice!

S CRIPTURE

Philippians 4:4-9

O BSERVATION What situation was Paul addressing immediately before this exhortation to the Philippian believers (see Phil 4:2-3)?

Deeper Reflection ANOTHER COMMON BLESSING we confer on each other during Chinese New Year is xīn nián kuài lè. This is a wish for a fresh, new beginning filled with happiness. Underlying this wish is the implicit desire for all the unhappy, unpleasant episodes of the previous year to be forgotten. It is understandable for Chinese Christians to desire happiness for family, relatives, friends and acquaintances as the Lunar New Year dawns. But God wants us to be more than just happy this Chinese New Year, He wants us to be joyful, grateful and contented. Verse 4 speaks of rejoicing in the Lord. This comes after Paul exhorted two of the women leaders, Euodia and Syntyche, to put away some disagreement (vv.2-3). The joy of the Lord can be a balm to disagreement within the community of believers. Prayer and supplication with thanksgiving (gratitude) always brings the peace of God (vv.6-7). Finally, our perspective also matters: Paul exhorts believers to adopt any attitude that is virtuous and praise-worthy; he emphasises that we are to consider and mentally dwell on these things (v.8). In so doing, we will receive the peace of God (vv.8-9). Following this, Paul speaks of the need for contentment (Phil 4:10-13). Instead of focusing on our own happiness (often self-centred in orientation), God wants us to be theocentric and other-centred. Thus the encouragement to pursue joy in the Lord, prayer with thanksgiving and sufficiency in God (contentment). So this Lunar New Year, let us pray that the Lord will give us an attitude of joy, gratitude and contentment. Only then can we be truly happy!

A Year Ahead with God’s Favour

S CRIPTURE

Psalm 1:1-6; Proverbs 3:3-6

O BSERVATION On what grounds can Christians prosper in what they do (v.3; Prov 3:4) and find their paths straight and smooth (Prov 3:6)?

Deeper Reflection ANOTHER CHINESE NEW YEAR GREETING is wàn shì rú yì (literally “May everything you do succeed according to your desires”). The wish is to have a good year ahead, in which we succeed in all our endeavours and see all our dreams fulfilled. This is reminiscent of the righteous person in Psalm 1, who prospers in everything he or she sets out to do (vv.1-3). By contrast, the wicked will perish in judgment (vv.4-6). Similarly, Proverbs 3:5-6 speaks of the person who trusts in the LORD with all his heart and does not lean on his own understanding. The LORD will make straight his paths, that is, Yahweh will smoothen the way for the person to accomplish all that he is trusting the LORD to do. Proverbs 3:3-4 also promises favour and success in the sight of God and people as we walk in steadfast love and faithfulness. In other words, success in our endeavors often follows the righteous person who fully trusts in the Lord and delights in His Word. But success ultimately comes from God and we will enjoy true success when it is aligned with God’s will. This is why we need to delight in God’s Word and acknowledge Him instead of seeking our own understanding. In so doing, we can experience the reality of John’s prayer-wish for Gaius that “all may go well with you” (3 John 1:2)18. So let us persevere this Lunar New Year in living righteously in the eyes of God since success ultimately is defined by Him and derived from Him.

O BSERVATION What situation was the apostle Paul facing?

Deeper Reflection DURING THE LUNAR NEW YEAR, wishing others lóng mă jīng shén (“the strength of a dragon-horse”) expresses a desire for them to have strength and vitality even in their old age. The Chinese view strength as essential to a person’s self-confidence. Strength helps a person to overcome adversities in life. All of us dislike weakness as it often means a lack of ability and usefulness. In a time of severe weakness, the apostle Paul experienced the Lord Jesus who said, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness”; and so Paul learned to respond thus, “Therefore, I will boast more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me” (v.9). This weakness is not about laziness, passivity, a minor weakness or a small temptation to sin. It carries with it an utter burden which is beyond our strength such that we despair of life itself. It may involve undeserved suffering, painful circumstances or financial hardships in life and ministry. We find ourselves totally inadequate and unable to accomplish anything. The only choice left is for us to surrender ourselves to God, recognising that all strength belongs to God. Our weaknesses and difficulties compel us to look beyond ourselves, others and life for answers. We look in the right direction when we look to God. God may not always remove the painful circumstances that confront us. But God will always give sufficient grace to allow us to bear our trying moments. God’s grace grants us strength to endure hardship, while equipping us to persevere on in effective ministry.

John 10:1-10

O BSERVATION What does it mean to have life “abundantly” (v.10)?

Deeper Reflection FISH IS USUALLY served as the last dish on Lunar New Year’s Eve, which highlights the good fortune that people seek: nián nián you yú (literally “abundance and surplus year after year”). In verse 10, Jesus mentioned the kind of life that is overflowing or superabundant (i.e. considerably more than what one would expect or anticipate). Believers are given an abundant life upon salvation. In verse 9, Jesus declared that if anyone believes in Him, that person “will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture”. This means that those who are saved will experience freedom and security in Christ, and will find divine resources for sustenance and growth in life. As such, the abundant life that Jesus spoke of does not mean wealth, status, power or long life. It is a life in which there is richness in one’s relationship with Christ, satisfaction in one’s soul and growth in becoming more like Christ. The irony is that there seems to be many believers who do not live life abundantly. They are not enjoying intimacy in their relationship with the Lord; they neither know His Word well nor take care to obey His commands. They are not experiencing satisfaction and joy in life; they are often anxious, discontented, angry and joyless. They are not growing spiritually; they remain spiritually immature and manifest very little of Christ’s character. Why is this so? The enemy is hard at work – he comes to steal, kill and destroy. As a result, believers can end up harbouring unbelief and doubt in their hearts, hiding wilful sins in their lives and being distracted from living for the Lord.

O BSERVATION What does it mean to have contentment in life?

Deeper Reflection A COMMON CHINESE NEW YEAR WISH is bù bù gāo shēng (literally “promotions at every step”) for our careers. Career advancements are usually the result of hard work, exceeding performance goals and being considered as valued team contributors. Such advancements are thought to result in higher pay, prestige, status and a better life. Although the Bible teaches diligence and serving others, its strategy for achieving promotions is different from the ambitious tactics used by many. In God’s wisdom, the way up is down. In verses 6 to 10, the apostle Paul taught about pursuing “godliness with contentment” as great gain. This does not mean that godliness brings blessings of wealth or health. Godliness is about developing an attitude towards God such that our actions are pleasing to Him. The biblical story of David is an example of godliness. When he was pursued by King Saul in the hills, he had two occasions when he caught Saul blindsided and vulnerable (1 Sam 24, 26). These two incidents seemed like the perfect setup. He could have killed Saul and became king. But David did not take matters into his own hands. He believed that God would exalt him at the right time and at the right place. Our promotions come in God’s time. Seeking godliness, our response to pay rises and job promotions will be one of gratitude. We desire to serve God by helping others. It is only when we have godliness with contentment that we can speak like David: “Who am I, O Lord God? And what is my house, that You have brought me this far?” (2 Sam 7:18).

DO WE OFTEN OVERLOOK SOME PEOPLE IN SHOWING KINDNESS? God shows kindness even to the poorest or the most unlovable people. Scripture: Luke 14:12-14; Matthew 25:37-40 ACTIVITY BITE Every part of our body is important and has a function. Look at your family members’ heads and jot down all the things you can see, for example their canines, eyes, eyebrows or nose hair,. Then try to describe each of their functions. Compare your list with those of your family members. CHAT TIME Q1: Were you surprised at the many parts of the head that you missed? Why or why not? Q2: Why do you think some parts are more easily noticed than others? Q3: Since God made every little part of our bodies shouldn’t we make sure we take good care of each area? Why or why not? LEARNING POINT Kindness is about showing others they are valued, but too often we forget about those whom we should show kindness towards. Maybe it’s the new girl in school who doesn’t have any friends yet, the person who doesn’t have as much as you or those who work at the construction sites under the sun. If Jesus were here, He would have shown His love for them. We can be kind to those who are overlooked. In Matthew 25:37-40, Jesus says that if we give to the poor, it is as if we are doing it unto Him. All we need to do is to look around and we’ll notice those whom we can be kind to. ACTION POINT Find out about some community volunteering projects that your family can participate in around your neighbourhood. Set a time for everyone to do it together. FAMILY PRAYER POINTS Pray that God will show us those who are often overlooked, like the poor, and that your church will make an effort to do acts of kindness for them.

The Plan

S CRIPTURE

Luke 24:36-47; Acts 2:22-24

O BSERVATION What do you observe about God fulfilling His plan of salvation in verses 44 and 46 and Acts 2:23-24?

Deeper Reflection LUKE-ACTS IS A TWO-VOLUME WORK (Lk 1:1-4; Acts 1:1-2). Luke is about “all that Jesus began to do and teach” (Acts 1:1), which the exalted Christ continues through the church, as written in Acts. In the Luke-Acts theological story, we see God working out His plan towards “all flesh will see the salvation of God” (Lk 3:6) – “salvation” defined in terms of “forgiveness of sins” (Lk 1:77). Forward movement: In Luke-Acts, God’s plan began with the birth of the “Saviour” Jesus Christ (Lk 2:11). In pointing people to the Saviour, John the Baptist preached “repentance for the forgiveness of sins” (Lk 3:3). After His resurrection, the Saviour commissioned His apostles to proclaim “repentance for forgiveness of sins…to all nations” (vv.46-47). On Pentecost, the apostles’ message was, “Repent…for the forgiveness of your sins” (Acts 2:38), resulting in 3,000 being saved (Acts 2:40-41). Faithful fulfilment: God works out His plan by fulfilling His Word. “All things which are written about” Jesus in Scripture “must be fulfilled” (v.44). Christ’s death and resurrection were God fulfilling His “predetermined plan” (Acts 2:23-24). God’s Word will not fail and His plan will be fulfilled. And in this certainty, we confidently and courageously answer God’s redemptive call as a church no matter what challenges we face.

The Proclamation

O BSERVATION What was the one thing that was central in Paul’s ministry in his first missionary journey (vv.5-7, 44, 46, 48, 49)?

Deeper Reflection IN ACTS, God’s plan of salvation is fulfilled through the church proclaiming “the gospel of the grace of God” (Acts 20:24). Vision: God’s goal in John the Baptist’s preaching “repentance for the forgiveness of sins” was that “all flesh will see the salvation of God” (Lk 3:3, 6). Accordingly, Jesus commissioned His disciples to proclaim “repentance for forgiveness of sins…to all nations” (Lk 24:24-47), which He unpacked progressively in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria “and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8). Acts shows this progression: Jerusalem (Acts 1-7), Judea, Samaria (Acts 8-12) and towards “all nations” (Acts 13-28). Message: What the church in Acts proclaimed was fundamentally the Word of God. We see this in Paul’s first missionary journey (Acts 13): “proclaim” (v.5), “hear” (vv.7, 44), “spoken” (v.46), “glorifying” (v.48) the Word of God and “the word of the Lord was being spread” (v.49). Apostolic preaching was filled with Scripture, as demonstrated by Peter (Acts 2:15-36), Stephen (Acts 7:1-53) and Paul (Acts 13:15-41). “Proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead” (Acts 4:2) was central. The resurrection of Jesus is mentioned 23 times in Acts. Almost half of Peter’s message on Pentecost focused on the resurrection of Jesus (Acts 2:24-32). Living in our lives must be the living Lord and His living Word.

O BSERVATION How does Luke connect verses 46 to 49 and Acts 1:4-8 to show that Acts is a sequel to Luke?

Deeper Reflection IN ACTS, God’s plan of salvation is worked out through the church proclaiming the Gospel as “My witnesses” (Acts 1:8; cf. v.48). The word “witness” occurs 27 times in Acts and is frequently used for bearing witness to Jesus. However, the church is to be a Spirit-empowered witness of Jesus. Thus, Jesus commanded His disciples to “wait” in Jerusalem (Acts 1:4) “until you are clothed with power from on high” (v.49) before they begin fulfilling the Great Commission. Luke gives a very strong theological emphasis on the Holy Spirit in Acts. The Holy Spirit is mentioned 57 times in Acts. What marked the Spirit-empowered church as a witness for Jesus to the world in Acts? The Spirit-filled church “had all things in common; and they began selling their property and possessions and were sharing them with all, as anyone might have need” (Acts 2:38-39, 44-45; 4:32-35). Stephen was “full of the Holy Spirit” (Acts 6:5) and those he witnessed to “were unable to cope with the wisdom and the Spirit with which he was speaking” (Acts 6:10). Luke’s “emphasis on the Holy Spirit as transforming power present in the lives of the followers of Jesus” demonstrates “that the life and ministry of Jesus” – “all that Jesus began to do and teach” (Acts 1:1) – “continues in the life and work of the church”24.

O BSERVATION What observations can you make about Jesus and the Holy Spirit in verses 11 to 12, Luke 21:14-15 and Acts 6:8-10?

Deeper Reflection ACTS BEGINS as Luke ends: the ascension of Jesus and the promise of the Holy Spirit (Lk 24:49-51; Acts 1:4-9) – which are theologically interrelated. On Pentecost, the exalted Jesus “poured forth” the Holy Spirit upon His church (Acts 2:33), that He may continue through His church “all that He began to do and teach” (Acts 1:1) with His empowering presence in the Holy Spirit. In Acts, the Holy Spirit “is closely identified with Jesus; He extends the personal presence of the exalted Lord Jesus Himself ”32. Jesus’ promise of divine help to His disciples regarding what to say in their witness before hostile authorities is mentioned twice in Luke: “the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say” (vv.11-12), and “I will give you utterance and wisdom which none of your opponents will be able to resist or refute” (Lk 21:14-15). We see this promise fulfilled in Stephen who was “full of the Holy Spirit” (Acts 6:8-10). When Paul and his companions tried to go to Bithynia, after being “forbidden by the Holy Spirit” to evangelise Asia, “the Spirit of Jesus did not permit them” to do so (Acts 16:6-7). Jesus promised in Matthew: “I am there in their midst” (Matt 18:20) and “I am with you always” (Matt 28:20). How? In the person of the Holy Spirit.

Deeper Reflection IN ACTS, God’s plan of salvation was carried out through His church proclaiming the Gospel with the power of the Holy Spirit, the presence of the exalted Jesus; and as such, there could only be progress in fulfilling the Acts 1:8 mandate. On Pentecost, 3,000 persons were saved (Acts 2:41); “the Lord was adding to their number day by day” (Acts 2:47) and shortly after, another 5,000 (Acts 4:4). The missional progress of the church in Acts was indicated by six progress summary statements. In Jerusalem, “the word of God kept on spreading; and the number of the disciples continued to increase greatly” (v.7). After the church’s outreach had moved beyond Jerusalem, “the church throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria…continued to increase” (Acts 9:31). When King Herod Agrippa I violently attacked some believers in the church (Acts 12:1-2), “the word of the Lord continued to grow and to be multiplied” (Acts 12:24). The churches planted by Paul “were being strengthened in the faith, and were increasing in number daily” (Acts 16:5). In Paul’s two years of ministry in Ephesus (Acts 19:9-10), “the word of the Lord was growing mightily and prevailing” (Acts 19:20). Note that the progress was in terms of quantitative and qualitative growth of lives, and the intensive and extensive ministry of the Word of God.

The Prison

O BSERVATION How is Paul’s imprisonment in Rome described in verses 30 to 31 and Philippians 1:12-14?

Deeper Reflection PERSECUTION IS A KEY THEME IN ACTS. It started as early as Acts 4 (Acts 4:1-3), not long after Pentecost. When “a great persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem” (Acts 8:1, NIV), the disciples were “all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria” and “went about preaching the word” (Acts 8:4). Here is the progressive fulfilment of Acts 1:8 – “You shall be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria.” Towards the end of his third missionary journey, Paul set his sights on Rome: “I must also see Rome” (Acts 19:21). It was God’s will for Paul to go to Rome (Acts 23:11). But Paul did not expect things to turn out such that he ended up in Rome as a prisoner (vv.16-17). Acts concludes with its sixth progress summary statement: “preaching the kingdom of God and teaching concerning the Lord Jesus Christ with all openness, unhindered” (v.31). In this imprisonment, Paul realised that “my circumstances have turned out for the greater progress of the gospel” (Phil 1:12). The prison cannot paralyse the progress of God fulfilling His plan of salvation through His church’s proclamation of the Gospel with the presence of Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit. This is the theological story of Acts.

MUST I BE KIND TO THOSE WHO ARE UNKIND TO ME? Jesus is kind to everyone, even to those who hate Him. Scripture: Matthew 5:43-48; Romans 5:8 ACTIVITY BITE Get a marker and draw an arrow on the surface of a big coin. Next, get your family members to sit around the table and spin the coin. When it stops spinning, perform an unkind act to the person whom the arrow is pointing at, for example, pulling their ear or drawing a moustache on their face with non-permanent markers. Continue until everyone has had a turn. CHAT TIME Q1: How do you feel when someone does something unkind to you? Q2: Is it easy for you to be kind to those who are nasty to you? Why or why not? Q3: Why was Jesus kind to those who hated Him? LEARNING POINT It’s hard to love people who make things difficult for us. Often, the first thing we want to do is to get revenge and make them pay for what they’ve done to us. But that is not God’s way. Jesus was hated by many people even though He showed kindness to them, yet He continued to love them. Through His death on the cross, many people now believe in Him. We must follow God’s commandment to love everyone. The secret is to ask God for help. Only He can give us the power and love to be kind to those who are nasty to us. You never know, sometimes people can be changed forever by your simple act of kindness. ACTION POINT Talk to your parents about the people who have been unkind to you. Think of some acts of kindness you can do for them and ask God to help you do it. FAMILY PRAYER POINTS Ask God to help us forgive those who have treated us unkindly and to love them instead, so that all may know that God is love.

The Jesus in Acts (1)

O BSERVATION How does Luke show that what he has written in Luke-Acts is an account of events which actually happened (vv.2-4; Acts 1:3)?

Deeper Reflection ACTS 1:1-11 PRESENTS A FOURFOLD REVELATION of Jesus: the risen Jesus, the reigning Jesus, the residing Jesus and the returning Jesus. The Risen Jesus: In writing his Gospel, Luke began by underlining that what he had written was a responsible and trustworthy account of events which actually happened (vv.1-4). His historical method involved “careful investigation”, relating to “eyewitnesses” and an “orderly” accounting (vv.2-3), so that his readers would “know the exact truth” of the origins of the Christian story (v.4). Luke continued with a similar emphasis for Acts. At the beginning of Acts, he wrote that Jesus “presented Himself alive” to His disciples “by many convincing proofs” over 40 days (Acts 1:3). From then on, central in the apostolic proclamation of the Gospel was the resurrection of Jesus – mentioned 23 times in Acts. The entire Christian movement is predicated on Jesus’ resurrection from the dead, and on the disciples’ absolute conviction of and undeviating commitment to this theological and existential reality, even in the face of violent persecution and the consequent agonising suffering to death. O BSERVATION How does Jesus relate Himself to the Holy Spirit in John 14:16-19?

Deeper Reflection THE RISEN JESUS is also the Residing Jesus. The word “began” in Luke’s summary of his Gospel − “all that Jesus began to do and teach” (v.1) − indicates a continuity. The continuity would begin when “the Holy Spirit has poured upon” Jesus’ disciples (v.8) and they were “baptised” with the Holy Spirit” (v.5). It is not the Holy Spirit replacing Jesus, but that Jesus − who has ascended to heaven − is present with His disciples and residing in His church through the Holy Spirit. In John, the coming of the Holy Spirit (Jn 14:16-17) means that Jesus “will come to” His disciples (Jn 14:18) and they will “see” Him (Jn 14:19) “continually and indefinitely into the future”.34 Change to: What Jesus does and teaches (Acts 1:1) embodies His very life. The Holy Spirit in the church is the life of Jesus relived in the church.35 The idiom “the name of Jesus” occurs 33 times in Acts – for example, “preaching the good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ” (Acts 8:12) and “the name of the Lord Jesus was being magnified” (Acts 19:17). The idiom is Luke’s “expression of the presence of Christ, but not in any magical way. Rather, the preached Word unleashes the power of the resurrected Christ so that the gap between the earthly Jesus and the resurrected Christ is bridged by the Spirit.”36

O BSERVATION How should we view the Second Coming of Christ according to verses 6 to 11?

Deeper Reflection THE RISEN JESUS AND THE RESIDING JESUS is also the Reigning Jesus. The ascension of Jesus represents the conclusion of Luke (Lk 24:50-51), but is the foundation of Acts (vv.9-11). “Ascension means reign.”37 Jesus is “exalted to the right hand of God” as “both Lord and Messiah” (Acts 2:33, 36), having “all authority…in heaven and on earth” (Matt 28:18). It is of theological significance that this Jesus who is exalted in heaven also suffers persecution with His church on earth: “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?” (Acts 9:4). The Reigning Jesus is in total sovereign control over everything, including himself suffering persecution with His church. The Returning Jesus: “All that Jesus began to do and teach” at His first coming (v.1) and continues through the church by the Holy Spirit (vv.4-8) will culminate with “He will come in just the same way” (v.11). Even when everything fails and falls apart on earth as we do God’s heavenly will on earth, we ought to be “gazing intently into the sky” with the certain hope that “He will come” back (vv.10-11; cf. 1 Pet 1:13). And let us not foolishly engage in speculative and obsessive “addictive futurology”38, as if we can know when the Lord will return, when He clearly tells us: “It is not for you to know” (vv.6-7).
